Abstract

Resonant optical power buildup inside a high finesse cavity is exploited to boost the sensitivity in quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) for CO, N2O and H2O detection, operating at a wavelength of 4.59 µm. A quartz tuning fork with T-shaped prongs optimized for QEPAS has been employed. Exploiting the high signal-to-noise ratio attainable with this tuning fork together with an optical power amplification of ~100 enabled by efficient optical feedback locking, limits of detection (3σ, 10 s integration) of 260 ppt and 750 ppt for CO and N2O have been reached.

Abstract

A quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor capable to detect high concentrations of methane (C1) and ethane (C2) is here reported. The hydrocarbons fingerprint region around 3 µm was exploited using an interband cascade laser (ICL). A standard quartz tuning fork (QTF) coupled with two resonator tubes was used to detect the photoacoustic signal generated by the target molecules. Employing dedicated electronic boards to both control the laser source and collect the QTF signal, a shoe-box sized QEPAS sensor was realized. Abstract

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low cost, and small footprint are desirable across a broad range of applications in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, most works have focused on either acoustic resonator to enhance acoustic wave or optical resonator to enhance optical wave. Herein, we develop a gas sensor based on doubly resonant PAS in which the acoustic and optical waves are simultaneously enhanced using combined optical and acoustic resonators in a centimeter-long configuration. Not only the lower detection limit is enhanced by the double standing waves, but also the upper detection limit is expanded due to the short resonators. As an example, we developed a sensor by detecting acetylene (C2H2), achieving a noise equivalent absorption of 5.7*10-13 cm-1 and a dynamic range of eight orders. Compared to the state-of-the-art PAS gas sensors, the developed sensor increases the sensitivity by two orders of magnitude and extends the dynamic range by three orders of magnitude. Besides, a laser-cavity-molecule locking strategy is proposed to provide additional flexibility of fast gas detection.

Abstract

In this paper, we report on the performance of quartz tuning fork (QTF) based laser spectroscopy sensing employing multiple QTFs. To avoid that resonance frequency mismatching of the QTFs degrades the sensor performance, two types of resonance frequency matching method are here proposed. A system based on the coupling of two sensing modules, one based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and one on light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) technique, was realized to validate the proposed methods. Each module employed a different QTF (QTF1 and QTF2, respectively). Operating temperature or pressure of QTF2 were regulated to match the resonance frequency of QTF1, which operated at 25.0 °C and atmospheric pressure. Without regulation, the difference between QTF1 and QTF2 resonance frequencies was 2.42 Hz and the superposition coefficient η was only 54.7%. When the temperature regulation was carried out, at a QTF2 operating temperature of 67.5 °C, an optimal η value of 95.0% was obtained. For the pressure regulation approach, if operating QTF2 at pressure of 500 Torr, η reached a value of 97.2%. The obtained results show that the proposed two methods are effective in resonance frequency matching of QTFs for gas sensing systems.

Abstract

In this paper, an on-beam quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor based on a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) acting as a photoacoustic transducer, was realized and tested. The QTF is characterized by a resonance frequency of 28 kHz, ~15% lower than that of a commercially available 32.7 kHz standard QTF. One-dimensional acoustic micro resonator (AmR) was designed and optimized by using stainless-steel capillaries. The 28 kHz QTF and AmRs are assembled in on-beam QEPAS configuration. The AmR geometrical parameters have been optimized in terms of length and internal diameter. The laser beam focus position and the AmR coupling distance were also adjusted to maximize the coupling efficiency. For comparison, QEPAS on-beam configurations based on a standard QTF and on the 28 kHz QTF were compared in terms of H2O and CO2 detection sensitivity. In order to better characterize the performance of the system, H2O, C2H2 and CO2 were detected for a long time and the long-term stability was analyzed by an Allan variance analysis. With the integration time of 1 s, the detection limits for H2O, C2H2 and CO2 are 1.2 ppm, 28.8 ppb and 2.4 ppm, respectively. The detection limits for H2O, C2H2 and CO2 can be further improved to 325 ppb, 10.3 ppb and 318 ppb by increasing the integration time to 521 s, 183 s and 116 s

Nel corso dei millenni, la mobilità ha enormemente influito sulle vite e sulle linee direttrici che determinano i cambiamenti sociali, toccando profondamente le persone e il modo in cui esse hanno popolato i territori di tutto il mondo. Nonostante tali spostamenti siano una caratteristica storica costante, raramente è stata evidenziata l’importanza del passato e della memoria nel disegnare la risposta sociale alla mobilità. Attraverso un caso-studio situato nel Salento, un’area del sud Italia dove il movimento di genti è documentato per un periodo, che arriva fino ai giorni nostri, e tramite la combinazione di un’intensa indagine archeologica di superficie e uno studio etnografico, questo progetto si propone di esplorare il nesso cruciale tra mobilità, territorio e memoria, in un ampio range cronologico. Through the millennia, mobility has dramatically affected lives and trajectories of social change, profoundly influencing humans and the way they inhabited the landscape all over the world. Despite the acknowledgement of the periodic recurrence throughout history of the movement of people, the importance of the past and its memory in shaping the social responses to mobility has been rarely highlighted. Through the study of a case study located in Salento, an area of southern Italy where population mobility is documented over a very long period of time to the present day, this project sets out to explore via a combination of an intensive diachronic archaeological survey and an ethnographic investigation, the crucial nexus between mobility, landscape and memory.

10. GIS potentialities in reconstructing social structures and economic and settling strategies in Mousterian sites of Central-Southern Italy

Abstract

The study of Neandertal behaviour in Central-Southern Italy using GIS systems is one the research topics explored by the R.U. of Prehistory and Anthropology (DSFTA) of the University of Siena. Multidisciplinary and integrated analytic protocols have been applied in a number of stratigraphic contexts of Central-Southern Italy: Grotta Grande and Riparo del Molare (MIS 5; San Giovanni a Piro, SA; Ronchitelli et al. 2011, Boscato et al. 2002), Riparo l’Oscurusciuto (MIS 3; Ginosa, TA; Marciani et al. 2016, Spagnolo et al. 2016) and Grotta dei Santi (MIS 3; Monte Argentario, GR; Spagnolo 2017). These sites are particularly suitable for being observed under a multi-scale perspective: from the high-resolution diachronic reading of historical processes to the intra-site investigation at a territorial scale. Settling strategies of Neandertal hunter-gatherers are the pivot around which a lively scientific debate has developed among scholars of different disciplines, highlighting the magnitude of the problem in terms of involved research fields. As a consequence increasingly integrated methodologies of study are needed. Thus, the contextual multi-scale dimension of Spatial Archaeology is becoming the ideal “scenario” where the integration among single results of prehistoric research can occur. According to investigations carried out at an intra-site scale, the different organization of space in Neandertal camps of the examined sample is probably the expression of merely spatial variables (e.g. size of the investigated area), even if, sometimes, it seems to actually mirror real differences in settling strategies (e.g. brief vs. long occupations). As expected, the degree of “archaeological visibility” of the activity areas is directly proportional to how much the contexts under study lasted in time. Consequently, living floors and short-lived palimpsests can be obviously read more clearly than long-lasting palimpsests. Moreover, the availability of stratigraphic sequences with several occupational layers, often very well preserved, is a key-factor for detecting continuity and discontinuity of settlement patterns. Settlement fluctuations and changes, besides representing adaptations to local environmental contexts, work as proxies for social structures and for one of the “quiet motors” of history: dialectic relation between “group memory” and “Longue durée”.
