Objective The air pollution on pregnancy outcome (APPO) study is a prospective hospital-based cohort study designed to investigate the maternal and fetal effects of a particulate matter with an aerodynamic below 10 μm (PM10) and PM2.5 (below 2.5 μm) exposure. This study aims to analyze a relationship between particulate matter and adverse pregnancy outcomes and to find related biomarkers and develop management guidelines.Methods About 1,200 pregnant women are recruited for 3 years (from January 2021 to December 2023) from seven university hospitals to investigate the effects of particulate matter on pregnancy complications and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We collect biological samples by 5 mL of maternal venous blood and 15 mL of urine in each trimester of pregnancy, and 5 mL of umbilical cord blood and 2×2×2 cm of placental tissue are collected after delivery. In addition, by applying PM10 and PM2.5 concentration values and time-activity patterns from the time weighted average model, the individual predicted exposure of air pollution for the pregnant women are obtained.Results The average exposure of PM10 and PM2.5 of the participants in the entire period of pregnancy, was exceeded the World Health Organization air quality guidelines (an annual level, PM10 >15 μg/m3, PM2.5 >5 μg/m3). Moreover, it was revealed that the PM concentration was increasing toward the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.Conclusion The APPO study will be able to identify the degree of exposure to air pollution in pregnant women and use it as basic data for estimating individual exposure to particulate matter. And the results of the APPO study will facilitate in the development of health management for pregnant women against air pollution.

In September 2021, gray-to-brown discoloration and expanding water-soaked lesions were observed on the outer and inner layers and the core of kimchi cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) in fields located in Samcheok, Gangwondo, Korea. A bacterial strain designated as KNUB-02-21 was isolated from infected cabbage samples. Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the 16S rRNA region and the dnaX, leuS, and recA genes confirmed that the strain was affiliated with Pectobacterium versatile. Additionally, the biochemical and morphological profiles of the isolate were similar to those of P. versatile. Based on these results, the isolate was identified as a novel strain of P. versatile. Healthy kimchi cabbage slices developed soft rot upon inoculation with P. versatile KNUB-02-21 and exhibited symptoms similar to those observed in the diseased plants in fields. The re-isolated strains were similar to those of P. versatile. Prior to our study, P. versatile as the causative pathogen of kimchi cabbage soft rot had not been reported in Korea.

In October 2021, soft rot disease seriously affected radish crop in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. The infected radishes were stunted and turned dark green, with yellowish leaf foliage. A slimy, wet, and decayed pith region was observed in the infected roots. The bacterial strain KNUB-03-21 was isolated from infected roots. The biochemical and morphological characteristics of the isolate were similar to those of Pectobacterium brasiliense. Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the 16S rRNA region and the concatenated DNA polymerase III subunit tau (dnaX), leucine-tRNA ligase (leuS), and recombinase subunit A (recA) genes confirmed that the isolate is a novel strain of P. brasiliense. Artificial inoculation of radish with P. brasiliense KNUB-03-21 resulted in soft rot symptoms similar to those observed in infected radish in the field; subsequently, P. brasiliense KNUB-03-21 was reisolated and reidentified. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. brasiliense as a causal pathogen of radish soft rot in Korea.

Background: Sleep duration is associated with hearing loss, especially presbycusis, which is the most common type of hearing loss; however, there is limited evidence regarding this association among the Korean population. We aimed to determine the relationship between sleep duration and high-frequency hearing loss in Korean adults aged ≥40 years.Methods: We examined 5,547 Korean adults aged ≥40 years who completed audiometric tests and questionnaires regarding sleep duration during the 2010–2012 cycle of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mild presbycusis was defined as >25 decibels (dB) and 40 dB pure tone averages at high frequencies (3,000, 4,000, and 6,000 Hz) for both ears. Additionally, the sleep duration was divided into quartiles. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using multivariable logistic regression after adjusting for covariates.Results: The prevalence of presbycusis in South Korean adults was 62.1%, of which 61.4% showed moderate to severe presbycusis. The incidence of moderate-to-severe, but not mild, presbycusis showed a significant positive correlation with sleep duration.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that sleep duration is associated with the prevalence of presbycusis.

Background/Aims: The recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been associated with changes in the epidemiology of not only infectious diseases but also several non-infectious conditions. This study investigated changes in the recorded incidence of various rheumatic diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: The number of patients for each disease from January 2016 to December 2020 was obtained from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. We compared the incidence of nine rheumatic diseases (seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], idiopathic inflammatory myositis [IIM], ankylosing spondylitis [AS], systemic sclerosis, Sjögren’s syndrome, Behçet’s disease [BD], polymyalgia rheumatica, and gout) and hypertensive diseases to control for changes in healthcare utilisation before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. The disease incidence before and after the COVID-19 outbreak was compared using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and quasi- Poisson analyses.Results: Compared with the predicted incidence in 2020 using the ARIMA model, the monthly incidence of SLE, BD, AS, and gout temporarily significantly decreased, whereas other rheumatic diseases and hypertensive diseases were within the 95% confidence interval (CI) of the predicted values in the first half of 2020. In age- and sex-adjusted quasi-Poisson regression analysis, the annual incidences of IIM (rate ratio [RR], 0.473; 95% CI, 0.307 to 0.697), SLE (RR, 0.845; 95% CI, 0.798 to 0.895), and BD (RR, 0.850; 95% CI, 0.796 to 0.906) were significantly decreased compared with those in the previous 4 years.Conclusions: The recorded annual incidence of some rheumatic diseases, including IIM, SLE, and BD, decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and full-duplex (FD) are promising candidates for achieving the spectral efficiency to meet the needs of 5G communications. One essential key to realizing practical FD massive MIMO systems is how to effectively mitigate the self-interference (SI). Conventionally, however, the performance comparison of different SI methods by reflecting the actual channel characteristics was insufficient in the literature. Accordingly, this paper presents a performance analysis of SI cancellation (SIC) methods in FD massive MIMO systems. Analytical and numerical results confirm that, in an imperfect channel-estimation case, the ergodic rates performance of the spatial suppression in the uplink outperforms those of the SI subtraction, due to the correlation between the precoder and the estimation error of the SI channel. Water beads are small, colorful toys that swell over the time in water. We report 2 cases of intestinal obstruction by unwitnessed ingestion of water beads. The diagnosis of each case was made by exploratory laparoscopy or comprehensive ultrasonography. The water beads were removed surgically in both cases. Since their ingestion can cause intestinal obstruction, water beads should not be allowed as toys for children.

Although several studies have investigated effective treatments for masticatory muscle pain (MMP), no unified conclusion has been drawn regarding the effectiveness of these treatments.This study aimed to define quantitative indicators for predicting the outcome of MMP treatment.In total, patients aged 20-70 years were recruited and divided into the MMP (n = 24) and control (n = 36) groups, based on the presence of MMP according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. At pretreatment, the MMP group was assessed using quantitative indicators such as subjective pain levels, pain duration, graded chronic pain scale (GCPS), and perceived stress scale (PSS). Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were analyzed. The masticatory muscle palpation score and the range of mouth opening were measured. At posttreatment, subjective pain levels, mouth opening, and treatment/medication duration were examined. The PSS and sAA levels were assessed in the control group.sAA levels in the MMP group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p .05). The masseter muscle palpation score (MPS) showed a positive correlation with IL-6 levels (ρ = 0.503, p .05) and a negative correlation with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment period (ρ = -0.462, p .05). The temporalis muscle palpation score (TPS) was positively correlated with pain duration and GCPS grade (ρ = 0.483, p .05, and ρ = 0.445, p .05, respectively).Treatment with NSAIDs was effective in the MMP group with high MPS and IL-6 levels, but not in the MMP group with high TPS, pain duration, and GCPS grade.

Teachers are highly reliant on textbooks for teaching. In the Republic of Korea, science textbooks help students to understand scientific terms through inquiry activities. However, there is a lack of analysis on whether the inquiry activities suggested in these textbooks appropriately cover the terms included in the main text. Therefore, this study assesses the life science units included in widely used lower secondary school science textbooks in the Republic of Korea by analysing the connection between the terms presented in the inquiry activities and the main text using the NetMiner 4.0 programme. The results reveal that the life science units included in the lower secondary school science textbooks are well structured for learning life science terms through the inquiry activities, as the terms presented in the inquiry activities and the main text are well connected. However, the number of terms included in each unit greatly differs and needs to be supplemented with the optimization of the number of terms per unit. The results provide basic data for the future development of lower secondary school science textbooks. Future research should analyse how the terms used in inquiry activities and the main text are connected in real science classes. We performed ordinary ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) in patients younger than 18 years old with secondary ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS) after traumatic events. Here, we report the clinical and radiologic outcomes with a review of the previous literature through a retrospective case series.Twenty-two adolescents treated by USOs from 2006 to 2018 were investigated. The amount of shortening was classified into three categories. The first category was for a still open physis on the medial half of the radius in those younger than 15. In this category, we osteotomized the ulna for the physis level to be left neutral or negative by 1-2 mm. The second category had no growth potency in the radius. If the patient was younger than 15, we considered only residual growth of the ulna, thus performing USO for the ordinary UV to be negative by 2-3 mm. For patients aged 15-18 years old, if growth potency was nearly absent in the ulna, we performed traditional USO with a neutral ulnar variance (UV).Categories 1, 2, and 3 for the amount of USO were determined for 4, 4, and 14 patients, respectively. All USOs properly healed without substantial complications. The mean preoperative UV was 2.91 mm, and the final value decreased to 0.23 with statistical significance (p0.001). The range of wrist motion was improved after USO from 133.86° and 132.73° to 154.77° and 160.68° (all, p0.001 in flexion-extension and pronation-supination arcs, respectively). The preoperative VAS and MMWS scores also improved from 2.77 to 75.00 to 0.18 and 88.86, respectively, at the final follow-up (all, p0.001).UIS in adolescent populations after trauma in their children/younger adolescents could be properly treated by USO. Even with an open physis at the ulna, neutral UVs could be achieved, and the clinical outcomes were satisfactory. However, long-term follow-up is still needed regarding TFCC and DRUJ status.Level IV, retrospective case series.

Methods available for estimating the age of a living body are somewhat limited when there is shortage of teeth. This study aimed to determine whether the average stage of attrition (ASA) method published in 1995 by Li and Ji is practical among Koreans in their 50s and 60s. A total of 173 cases using 265 molars from 92 patients in their 50s and 60s who underwent age assessment at the Department of Oral Medicine at Pusan National University Dental Hospital from 2012 to 2022 were analyzed through clinical photographs and diagnostic casts. ASA method was used to determine the average attrition of cusps and calculate the estimated age. There was a moderate correlation between the average attrition of molars and the patients’ actual age. In patients in their 50s and 60s, the error range between the estimated age and the actual age was less than 10 years in 139 of 173 cases (74.56%), and age was underestimated in 147 cases (84.98%). The tendency for age to be underestimated was higher in women than in men. Regression analysis using both the first and second molars showed that the influence of the first molar was greater than that of the second molar. Although the correlation is not very high, considering the limitations of age estimation in the living body, this method may be useful if coupled with another method such as dental radiograph analysis when there is an absolute shortage of available teeth.

Kidney biopsy is essential for the diagnosis and classification of lupus nephritis. Percutaneous biopsy has a risk of bleeding-related complications; however, data on the risk of percutaneous kidney biopsy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are scarce. In this study, we aimed to investigate the rate of bleeding-related complications and to examine the risk factors for complications of kidney biopsy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with SLE who underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous kidney biopsy between 2002 and 2020 at a tertiary referral center. Minor complications were defined as hematoma and passing hematuria not requiring an intervention. Major complications included bleeding events that required interventions after the biopsy. Statistical analysis with a multivariate logistic regression model was performed.In a total of 277 patients with SLE, the rate of overall bleeding-related complications after kidney biopsy was 19.9% (minor 13.0%; major 6.9%). Among patients with major complications, 84.2% needed blood transfusion alone without embolization or surgery, whereas the remaining three patients needed embolization for bleeding control. Multivariate analysis revealed that thrombocytopenia (odds ratio [OR] 7.186, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.315-22.300), and low eGFR (OR 3.478, 95% CI 1.094-11.056) were significantly associated with the risk of major bleeding-related complications after kidney biopsy.Percutaneous kidney biopsy is accompanied by the risk of bleeding-related complications; however, most events in our study did not require vascular intervention for bleeding control. Low platelet count and low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) significantly increase the risk of complications after kidney biopsy in patients with SLE. Key Points • The rate of overall bleeding-related complications after kidney biopsy was about 20% of patients with SLE. • The most commonly observed events were gross hematuria followed by blood transfusion. • Thrombocytopenia and poor kidney function areis an important risk of bleeding-related complications after kidney biopsy.

The graft cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii) continues to be exported to more than 20 countries worldwide. In April 2021, typical bacterial symptoms of soft rot were observed in the graft cactus (cv. Yeonbit) in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, resulting in economic losses in cactus production. The stems turned dark brown and the flowers were covered with black rot. The bacterial strain designated as KNUB-01-21 was isolated from infected stems and flowers. The results of the morphological and biochemical tests of the isolate were similar to those of Pectobacterium brasiliense. For molecular analysis, the 16S rRNA region and three housekeeping genes (dnaX, leuS, and recA) of the strain KNUB-01-21 were amplified. Based on the results of the molecular analysis and morphological and biochemical tests, KNUB-01-21 was identified as P. brasiliense. The pathogenicity of KNUB-01-21 on graft cactus was confirmed by an inoculation test. Artificial inoculation using P. brasiliense KNUB-01-21 produced soft rot symptoms on the grafted cactus, and the same bacterium was re-isolated and re-identified. This is the first report of P. brasiliense causing soft rot in graft cactus in Korea.

High pressure or strain is an effective strategy for generating phase transformations in van der Waals (vdW) layered materials without introducing defects, but this approach remains difficult to perform consistently. We present a scalable and facile method for achieving phase transformation in vdW materials, wherein solid vdW materials are subject to internal thermal stress within a molten metal mantle as it undergoes cooling. This internal thermal stress is principally the product of differential thermal expansion between mantle and core and can be tuned by the mantle material and temperature conditions. We validated this approach by achieving phase transformation of red phosphorus to black phosphorus, and metallic 1T'- to semiconducting 2H-MoTe

Penetrating neck injuries are a surgical challenge. In particular, penetrating neck injuries associated with carotid artery injuries have a high mortality rate. Overt external hemorrhage is unanimously considered as an indication for surgical exploration. The authors present a case of successful surgical management for a penetrating common carotid artery injury using a Pruitt-F3 Carotid Shunt (LeMaitre Vascular Inc., Burlington, MA, USA) in a 60-year-old male patient who was transferred to the level 1 trauma center due to a metal fragment piercing his neck while working. Active pulsatile bleeding was observed from the 3-cm-long external wound on the anterior neck in zone II. Emergent neck exploration showed near-total transection of the left common carotid artery just below the carotid bifurcation. After a Pruitt-F3 Carotid Shunt was applied to the injured carotid artery as a temporary vascular shunt, artificial graft interposition was performed for the injured common carotid artery. The patient experienced cerebral infarction as a complication caused by ischemia-reperfusion of the common carotid artery but was discharged in a suitable state for rehabilitation therapy.

The effect of combined Korean medicine treatment including facial chuna manual therapy was retrospectively investigated in patients with Bell’s palsy. There were 16 patients (14 males) who received 2 months outpatient treatment following > 14 days of hospitalization. The Yanagihara score and House- Brackmann grade were used to measure the severity of symptoms and recovery. The patients (mean age 58.5 ± 24.74 years) were categorized based on their medical history of hypertension (n = 10), diabetes millitus (n = 10), or oral intake of steroids early in the diagnosis of Bell’s palsy (n = 10). There was no difference between patients who had or did not have a previous history of diabetes mellitus or oral steroid. Both the Yanagihara-score and House-Brackmann grade improved significantly in the total patient sample after treatment (p < 0.001). Combined Korean medicine including facial chuna manual therapy may have a beneficial effect on patient symptoms and recovery.
