This study examined the mediating and moderating effects of multicultural efficacy in the relationship between cultural empathy and cultural competence in child care teachers.A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used. The participants were 277 child care teachers at private and public daycare centers in G and S districts of Seoul. The survey instruments included a cultural empathy questionnaire, a multicultural efficacy scale, and a cultural competence scale. Data were analyzed using the SPSS and AMOS programs. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation, and mediating and moderating effect analyses were performed. Bootstrapping was implemented to verify the mediating effect of the model developed herein.Positive correlations among cultural empathy, multicultural efficacy, and cultural competence were noted. Multicultural efficacy showed a significant mediating effect on the relationships between cultural empathy and cultural competence. However, there was no moderating effect.In order to enhance the cultural competence of child care teachers, it is necessary to develop a strategy that can promote their cultural empathy and multicultural efficacy. Furthermore, these results will ultimately enhance the role of child care teachers, thus contributing to the normal growth and development of multicultural children.

The purpose of this case report is to present a case of long-term retention of avulsed upper maxillary incisors with external replacement root resorption in a 15-year-old boy. The avulsed teeth, #11, 21, and 22, were stored under dry conditions for 40 min and replanted. Endodontic treatment was initiated after two weeks, and the nonrigid splint was removed after 3.5 months. A year after replantation of the teeth, replacement root resorption was detected radiographically. For the following 9 years, the resorption progressed slowly, but the teeth were maintained without any adverse effects on esthetic appearance. Under dry storage conditions, replacement root resorption was expected. In this case, the patient was a growing 15-year-old boy; thus, replantation was performed despite a possible poor prognosis. Consequently, root resorption progressed. Nevertheless, maintenance of the tooth crowns led to satisfying results for the patient both esthetically and psychologically. Ankylosis or replacement root resorption is a complication occurring after replantation of avulsed teeth, which could require additional treatment. However, in young patients, replantation could be considered to maintain the teeth until growth is complete.

Objectives This investigation aimed to assess the differentiation inhibitory effects of ProRoot MTA® (PMTA) and Biodentine® (BIOD) on osteoclasts originated from murine bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) and compare these effects with those of alendronate (ALD). Materials and Methods Mouse BMMs were cultured to differentiate into osteoclasts with macrophage colony-stimulating factor and receptor activator of NF-κB (RANKL), treated with lipopolysaccharide. The long-term use of calcium hydroxide and the recent increase in the use of hydraulic calcium-silicate cements as direct pulp-capping materials provide important clues in terms of how reparative dentin may be induced to form a "biological seal" to protect the underlying pulp tissues. In this review article, we discuss clinical and molecular perspectives of reparative dentin formation based on evidence learned from the use of these pulp-capping materials. We also discuss the emerging role of calcium as an odontoinductive component in these pulp-capping materials.

IntroductionSurgical interventions such as tooth extraction increase the chances of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients receiving bisphosphonates (BPs) for the treatment of bone-related diseases. Tooth extraction is often performed to eliminate preexisting pathological inflammatory conditions that make the tooth unsalvageable; however, the role of such conditions on bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) development after tooth extraction is not clearly defined. Here, we examined the effects of periapical periodontitis on tooth extraction-induced BRONJ development in mice.MethodsPeriapical periodontitis was induced by exposing the pulp of the maxillary first molar for 3weeks in C57/BL6 mice that were intravenously administered with BPs. The same tooth was extracted, and after an 3 additional weeks, the mice were harvested for histologic, histomorphometric, and histochemical staining analyses.ResultsPulp exposure induced periapical radiolucency as shown by increased inflammatory cells, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positiveosteoclasts, and bone resorption. When BPs were administered, pulp exposure did not induce apical bone resorption despite the presence of inflammatory cells and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positiveosteoclasts. Although tooth extraction alone induced BRONJ lesions, pulp exposure further increased tooth extraction-induced BRONJ development as shown by the presence of more bone necrosis.ConclusionsOur study demonstrates that a preexisting pathological inflammatory condition such as periapical periodontitis is a predisposing factor that may exacerbate BRONJ development after tooth extraction. Our study further provides a clinical implication wherein periapical periodontitis should be controlled before performing tooth extraction in BP users in order to reduce the risk of developing BRONJ.
