Social stress is common among people and is considered one of the causes of the declining birth rate. Predisposition to stress and stress-induced disorders is largely determined genetically. We hypothesized that due to differences in stress resistance, carriers of different genetic variants of genes associated with stress resilience and stress-induced diseases may have dissimilar numbers of offspring under conditions of long-term social stress. To test this hypothesis, a comparative analysis of frequencies of seven common polymorphic regions [exon 3 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) of the DRD4 gene, rs4680 of COMT, STin2 VNTR and the 5-HTTLPR (rs774676466) insertion/deletion polymorphism of SLC6A4, rs4570625 of TPH2, rs6265 of BDNF, and rs258747 of NR3C1] was performed on standardized groups of randomly selected adolescents born before, during, and after severe socioeconomic deprivation (the crisis of the 1990s in Russia). There were significant differences in frequencies of “long” alleles of the DRD4 gene (p = 0.020, χ2 = 5.492) and rs4680 (p = 0.022, χ2 = 5.289) in the “crisis” group as compared to the combined “noncrisis” population. It is possible that the dopaminergic system had an impact on the successful adaptation of a person to social stress.

Although several previous studies have suggested a relationship between sleep and the stress response, the mechanism underlying this relationship remains largely unknown. Here, we show that fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a lipid metabolism-related hormone, may play a role in this relationship. In this study, we examined differences in the stress response between FGF21 knockout (KO) mice and wild-type (WT) mice after social defeat stress (SDS). When the amount of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and wakefulness were averaged over the dark period after SDS, only KO mice showed significant differences in NREM sleep and wakefulness. In the social interaction test, KO mice seemed to be more prone to social avoidance. Our real-time (RT) -PCR results revealed that the mRNA expression of the stress- and sleep-related gene gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor subunit alpha 2 was significantly lower in WT mice than in KO mice. Moreover, KO mice showed lower plasma levels of ketone bodies, which also affect sleep/wake regulation, than WT mice. These results suggested that FGF21 might influence sleep/wake regulation by inducing production of an anti-stress agent and/or ketone bodies, which may result in resilience to social stress.

Background Excessive processing of aversive life events is a major pathology in stress-related anxiety and depressive disorders. Current pharmacological treatments have rather non-specific mechanisms of action. Somatostatin is synthesized and released as an inhibitory co-neurotransmitter by specific GABA interneurons and one of its receptors, SSTR4, is localized in brain regions involved in adaptive aversion processing and implicated in negative valence neuropathology, including the amygdala. Methods Rat and mouse experiments were conducted to investigate effects of specific SSTR4 agonism on neurobehavioral aversion processing including any normalization of stress-related hyper-responsiveness. A mouse experiment to investigate stress and SSTR4 agonism effects on reward processing was also conducted. Results In male rats (N=5-10/group) fitted with glutamate biosensors in basolateral amygdala, SSTR4 agonism attenuated glutamate release to restraint stress in control rats and particularly in rats previously exposed to chronic corticosterone. In male mice (N=10-18/group), SSTR4 agonism dose-dependently attenuated Pavlovian tone-footshock learning and memory measured as freezing behavior, both in controls (CON) and following exposure to chronic social stress (CSS) which induces excessive Pavlovian aversion learning-memory. Specificity of SSTR4 agonism effects to aversion learning-memory was demonstrated by absence of effects on discriminative reward (sucrose) learning-memory in both CON and CSS mice; SSTR4 agonism did increase reward-to-effort valuation in a dose-dependent manner, and in both CON mice and mice exposed to CSS which attenuates reward motivation. Conclusions These neuropsychopharmacological findings add substantially to the preclinical proof-of-concept evidence for SSTR4 agonism as a treatment in anxiety and depressive disorders.

Honeybees, Apis mellifera, usually live in large colonies consisting of thousands of individuals. Within the colony, workers interact with their social environment frequently. The large workforce, division of labour, and other features may promote the ecological success of honeybees. For decades, artificial mini colonies in cages within the laboratory have become the gold standard, especially in experiments related to toxicology, effects of pesticides and pathogens. Experiments using caged bees and full-sized colonies yielded contradictory results. Here, the effect of cage experiments on the stress level of individual bees is analysed. Two different stress response were targeted, the heat shock response and the mobilization of energetic resources. While no differences were found for varying group sizes of bees, very strong effects emerged by comparing caged workers with bees from natural colonies. Caged workers showed increased levels of hsp expression and reduced haemolymph titres for trehalose, the energy storage sugar. These results reveal that the lack of the social environment (e.g., lack of queen, lack of sufficient group size) induce stress in caged bees, which might act synergistically when bees are challenged by additional stressors (e.g., pesticides, pathogens) resulting in higher mortality than observed under field conditions.

Social behavior involves many processes including cognitive functions. Altered social behaviors associated with many psychiatric disorders might have alterations in the processes. Poor social environment affects development and maturation of cognitive functions that are important for social cognition, possibly introducing social stress as well as vulnerability to the stress into the developing brain. Adolescence and early adulthood have higher sensitivity to social stress, which may be linked to the onset of psychiatric disorders during this time period. Understanding social behavioral processes in detail will be crucial for elucidating mechanisms of emerging the social behavior phenotypes in psychiatric disorders and for devising therapeutic and preventive interventions to introduce the resilience for the onset of psychiatric disorders through modulation of social circuitries.

The human response to acute stress can be studied in detail in controlled settings, usually in a laboratory environment. To this end, many studies employ acute stress paradigms to probe stress-related outcomes in healthy and patient populations. Though valuable, these studies in themselves often have relatively limited sample sizes. We established a data-sharing and collaborative interdisciplinary initiative, the STRESS-NL database, which combines (neuro)biological, physiological, and behavioral data across many acute stress studies in order to accelerate our understanding of the human acute stress response in health and disease (www.stressdatabase.eu). Researchers in the stress field from 12 Dutch research groups of 6 Dutch universities created a database to achieve an accurate inventory of (neuro)biological, physiological, and behavioral data from laboratory-based human studies that used acute stress tests. Currently, the STRESS-NL database consists of information on 5529 individual participants (2281 females and 3348 males, age range 6-99 years, mean age 27.7 ± 16 years) stemming from 57 experiments described in 42 independent studies. Studies often did not use the same stress paradigm; outcomes were different and measured at different time points. All studies currently included in the database assessed cortisol levels before, during and after experimental stress, but cortisol measurement will not be a strict requirement for future study inclusion. Here, we report on the creation of the STRESS-NL database and infrastructure to illustrate the potential of accumulating and combining existing data to allow meta-analytical, proof-of-principle analyses. The STRESS-NL database creates a framework that enables human stress research to take new avenues in explorative and hypothesis-driven data analyses with high statistical power. Future steps could be to incorporate new studies beyond the borders of the Netherlands; or build similar databases for experimental stress studies in rodents. In our view, there are major scientific benefits in initiating and maintaining such international efforts. 9 p.

The present study aimed to: (1) Characterize markers of reward sensitivity during periods of social stress using a well validated social feedback paradigm; (2) Evaluate clinical relations between reward markers and anhedonia; and (3) Investigate if elevated levels of baseline prior exposure to stress (i.e., peer victimization) are associated with the degree of ventral striatum suppression and anhedonia symptoms in a social stress context. A total of 29 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 years old (Mage = 15.31; SD = 1.51; 55.2% cisgender girls) participated in the present study. Participants were asked to complete a semi-structured interview; fill out self-report questionnaires regarding social anxiety, stress, depression, and anhedonia; and complete a magnetic resonance imaging scan while playing the Island Getaway task. Ventral striatum (VS) BOLD signal activation estimates were then extracted during discrete phases of the game (e.g., anticipation of social feedback and outcome of social feedback) and statistically compared within-subjects via paired samples t-tests and correlated to social anxiety measures. Additionally, regression analyses assessed the effect of VS activation on anhedonia as well as the associative effect of peer victimization on VS activation and anhedonia. Results revealed that when in the presence of social stress (defined as the potential for negative feedback), socially anxious adolescents demonstrated significantly suppressed VS activation relative to baseline when anticipating feedback. Additionally, results indicated that the degree of reduced VS activation during anticipation was correlated to total changes in anhedonia severity across the task. Lastly, results demonstrated that overt peer victimization is a significant predictor of suppressed VS activation during anticipation of social feedback, but not during social outcomes. Taken together, these results identify potentially novel mechanisms associated with anhedonia and blunted reward processing in socially anxious youth that could be improved via interventions that target positive-valence systems. Doctor of Philosophy Socially anxious teens may be at a heightened risk for developing anhedonia – which means that they are showing a significant lack of interest in things they used to find interesting or rewarding. This is problematic, because the presence of anhedonia is associated with not doing as well in therapy and even with higher rates of suicide attempt. One area that may be linked to the development of anhedonia in socially anxious teens is social stress induced disrupted reward processing in certain regions of the brain that generally activate when people anticipate a reward. Despite this, there is very little research on the development of anhedonia is socially anxious teens and even less that focuses on biological and behavioral experiences of reward processing when under social stress. This study examines this potential stress-to-anhedonia pipeline by looking at a key region of the brain, called the ventral striatum, to see if social stress does disrupt reward processing in socially anxious teens, and, if so, if this disrupted reward processing is related to anhedonia. Through evaluating a total of 29 socially anxious teens who underwent a social stress task while completing brain scanning, the present study demonstrated evidence for diminished brain activation in the ventral striatum when anticipating rewards. Additionally, the present study showed that reduced brain activation in the ventral striatum was associated with changes in anhedonia severity. Lastly, results from this study indicated that peer victimization (or bullying) was a significant predictor of diminished brain activation in the ventral striatum. Taken together, these results identify potentially new markers associated with anhedonia and blunted reward processing in socially anxious youth that could be improved via interventions.

Introduction : The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase of social stressors and mental health issues in the general population as well as among mentally ill patients. A COVID-19- related “infodemic”, including too much information in digital and physical environments, has been recognized globally. Aim : This study aimed to describe the impact of COVID-19 infodemic (exposure to news related to COVID-19) in terms of depressive symptoms in the Paraguayan general population. Methods : This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. An online survey, designed in Google Forms, has been launched nationwide through the most popular social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and messaging applications (WhatsApp, Telegram) in April (1st-30th) 2021. The Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5) was employed for detecting depressive symptoms. Results : The survey included 1102 responders aged 35.4 ± 12.9 years old, 74.9% were women. MHI-5 mean score was 44.07 ± 14.16 in the general population with 34.4% (n = 379) of responders suffering from severe symptoms of depression (>52, as cut-off point). 53.5% of sample reported to have been exposed between 1 and 3 h to COVID-19 news, daily. An OR 1.933 (95% CI 1.48 - 2.52) was found between the exposure to news and depressive symptoms. Conclusions : This study suggests that people exposed to a higher number of hours of COVID-19 news were 93.3% more likely to develop depressive symptoms.

The field of Obstetrics and Gynecology is one that provides intersections between one's most private and intimate moments with scenarios that could potentially trigger significant emotional trauma. As providers, one must balance providing appropriate care with the respect and autonomy of the patient. The perioperative and operative space presents many ethical dilemmas in navigating these boundaries, particularly among individuals with a history of sexual trauma. In our commentary, we present one case of an adolescent patient, with a history of sexual trauma and pelvic pain, who underwent laparoscopic surgery. We explore the interplay of delegating autonomy during amnesia, chronic pelvic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and hyperarousal within this period. There is knowledge to be gained amongst Obstetrics and Gynecology providers in navigating perioperative services in individuals with complex history of social stress and trauma so that we can better understand the landscape of providing competent care.

Background Sex differences in addiction have been described in humans and animal models. A key factor that influences addiction in both males and females is adolescent experience. Adolescence is associated with higher vulnerability to substance use disorders, and male rodents subjected to adolescent social isolation (SI) stress form stronger preferences for drugs of abuse in adulthood. However, little is known about how females respond to SI, and few studies have investigated the transcriptional changes induced by SI in the brain’s reward circuitry. Methods We tested the hypothesis that SI alters the transcriptome in a persistent and sex-specific manner in prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, and ventral tegmental area. Mice were isolated or group housed from postnatal day P22 to P42, then group housed until ∼P90. Transcriptome-wide changes were investigated by RNA sequencing after acute or chronic cocaine or saline administration. Results We found that SI disrupts sex-specific transcriptional responses to cocaine and reduces sex differences in gene expression across all three brain regions. Furthermore, SI induces gene expression profiles in males that more closely resemble group-housed females, suggesting that SI “feminizes” the male transcriptome. Coexpression analysis reveals that such disruption of sex differences in gene expression alters sex-specific gene networks and identifies potential sex-specific key drivers of these transcriptional changes. Conclusions Together, these data show that SI has region-specific effects on sex-specific transcriptional responses to cocaine and provide a better understanding of reward-associated transcription that differs in males and females.

Stress is a critical factor in the development of mood and drug use disorders. The social defeat model is not appropriate for female rodents due to their low level of aggression. Therefore, a robust female model of social stress needs to be developed and validated. The aim of the present study was to unravel the long-lasting effects of vicarious social defeat (VSD) on the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine and ethanol intake in female mice. Although VSD seems to be a good model for inducing behavioral and physiologic endophenotypes induced by stress, there are no studies to date that characterize the effect of VSD on cocaine or alcohol use. The results confirm that VSD females showed an increase in corticosterone levels after a vicarious experience while also displaying an increase in anxiety- and anhedonic-like behaviors. Three weeks after the last VSD, vicariously defeated female mice showed an increased developed preference for a non-effective dose of cocaine in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm and showed an increase in ethanol intake. Our results suggest that female mice vicariously experience a state of distress through the social observation of others suffering from adverse events, confirming the use of VSD as a valid model to study the response to social stress in females. The fact that VSD in females induced a comparable behavioral phenotype to that observed in physically defeated males could indicate a relationship with the higher rate of psychopathologies observed in women. Notwithstanding, more studies are needed to dissect the neurobiological and behavioral peculiarities of the female response to social stress.

Humanity will mount interplanetary exploration missions within the next two decades, supported by a growing workforce operating in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) conditions of space. How will future space workers fare in a closed social world while subjected to persistent stressors? Using a sample of 32 participants operating in ICE conditions over the course of 30-45 days, we developed and tested a dynamic model of conflict and strain. Drawing on conservation of resources (COR) theory, we investigated reciprocal relationships between different forms (i.e., task and relationship) of conflict, and between conflict and strain. Results demonstrated evidence for a resource threat feedback loop as current-day task conflict predicted next-day relationship conflict and current-day relationship conflict predicted next-day task conflict. Additionally, results indicated support for a resource loss feedback loop as current-day relationship conflict predicted next-day strain, and current-day strain predicted next-day relationship conflict. Moreover, we found that job conditions affected these associations as current-day relationship conflict was more associated with next-day task conflict when next-day workload was high, but not when next-day workload was low. Similarly, current-day relationship conflict was more associated with next-day strain when next-day workload was high; however, this association decreased when next-day workload was low. Therefore, the results suggest that workload plays a critical role in weakening the effect of these spirals over time, and suggests that targeted interventions (e.g., recovery days) can help buffer against the negative impact of relationship conflict on strain and decrease the extent that relationship conflict spills over into task disputes. Background and Objectives: CDC data indicate that the U.S. is experiencing a sustained epidemic of drug-related mortality, with such deaths exceeding a record 100,000 in 2021, up 47% from 2019. Opioids, especially the synthetic opioid fentanyl, account for approximately 75% of this mortality. This study evaluates a proposed Consciousness-Based® approach that may possibly help reduce trends in drug-related fatalities by mitigating what WHO refers to as an “epidemic of stress” in society that helps fuel drug misuse and other negative public health trends. This approach involves providing support in public and private sector public health initiatives for individual and group practice of a subjective, evidence-based meditation procedure suitable for those of all educational, cultural, and religious backgrounds: the Transcendental Meditation® (TM®) technique and its advanced aspect, the TM-Sidhi® program. Materials and Methods: Segmented-trend regression analysis of monthly CDC data on U.S. drug-related fatality rates (dfr) from a prospective social experiment (2002–2016) was used to replicate and extend prior peer-reviewed research. Results: As hypothesized, (1) practice of the TM and TM-Sidhi program by a group of theoretically predicted size (√1% of the U.S. population) was associated with a statistically and practically significant reduction in dfr trend during the five-year “demonstration period” of the quasi-experiment; and (2) monthly dfr trend subsequently increased during the five-year follow-up period when the group fell below the required size (both p’s < 0.0001). The estimated total percent decrease in dfr during the demonstration period was 35.5%, calculated relative to the baseline mean. This decline was followed by total dfr increases of 11.8% and 47.4% relative to the demonstration-period mean during the two phases of the follow-up period. Conclusion: Existing evidence warrants implementation and further evaluation of this approach in U.S. public health initiatives.

The dimensional model of childhood adversity proposed that deprivation and threat dimensions might associated with individuals' development through different mechanisms. However, few studies have explored the relationship between different dimensions of childhood stress, emotion processing, and acute stress reactivity despite the overlapping brain regions of the last two. With the aid of the event-related potentials technique, we explore whether negative emotion processing, which might be particularly relevant for adaptive stress responding among individuals with adverse childhood experience, mediates the relationship between dimensional childhood stress and acute stress response. Fifty-one young adults completed a free-viewing task to evaluate neural response to negative stimuli measured by late positive potential (LPP) of ERPs (Event-related potentials). On a separate day, heart rate and salivary cortisol were collected during a social-evaluative stress challenge (i.e. TSST, Trier Social Stress Test). After the TSST, the childhood trauma questionnaire was measured to indicate the level of abuse (as a proxy of threat) and neglect (as a proxy of deprivation) dimensions. Multiple linear regression and mediation analysis were used to explore the relationship among childhood stress, emotion processing, and acute stress response. Higher level of childhood abuse (but not neglect) was distinctly related to smaller LPP amplitudes to negative stimuli, as well as smaller heart rate reactivity to acute stress. For these participants, smaller LPP amplitudes were linked with smaller heart rate reactivity to acute stress. Furthermore, decreased LPP amplitudes to negative stimuli mediated the relationship between higher level of childhood abuse and blunted heart rate reactivity to stress. Consistent with the dimensional model of childhood stress, our study showed that childhood abuse is distinctly associated with neural as well as physiological response to threat. Furthermore, the blunted neural response to negative stimuli might be the underlying mechanism in which childhood abuse leads to the blunted acute stress response. Considering that all the participants are healthy in the present study, the blunted processing of negative stimuli might rather reflect adaptation instead of vulnerability, in order to prevent stress overshooting in the face of early-life threatening experiences. 01 januari 2023

Social stress can cause physical and mental harm. It is therefore not surprising that public health policy makers have sought to identify and implement policies aimed at tackling this social ill. A frequently prescribed remedy is to reduce social stress by reducing income inequality, which is typically measured by the Gini coefficient. Decomposing the coefficient into a measure of a population's social stress and a population's income makes it possible to show that steps taken to lower the coefficient can actually exacerbate social stress. We formulate conditions under which lowering the Gini coefficient coincides with increasing social stress. If the aim of public policy is to improve public health and increase social welfare, and if social welfare is reduced by social stress, then lowering the Gini coefficient may not be the right course of action.

Individuals of the Western honeybee species, Apis mellifera, live in large groups of thousands of worker bees, a queen, and a few drones. Workers interact frequently with related individuals while performing various tasks. Although it is well understood why and under which conditions sociality can evolve, the consequences for individuals living in permanent groups are less well understood. As individuals of solitary species become stressed when kept at high density, it might be the opposite in obligate social species. Here, I use an experimental laboratory set-up to study the effect of varying group sizes on the magnitude and within-group variance of stress responses towards energetic and heat stress. While only a weak difference was found in the magnitude of an energetic stress response as a function of group size, the within-group variance showed a statistically significant positive relationship with group size for the glucose/trehalose ratio, a marker for energetic stress. The heat stress marker, hsp70AB gene expression, did not show any relationship to group size. Individuals of obligate social species seem to benefit from adaptations to permanent group living, e.g., buffering against stress, especially at a higher density of individuals. The consequences of infections and immune system activation in isolated individuals are discussed.

OBJECTIVE Evidence suggests that social anxiety (SA) is a risk factor for problematic alcohol and cannabis use, particularly during states of social stress. Unfortunately, laboratory studies to date have overlooked decision-making mechanisms (e.g., use willingness) and contextual features of commonly used social stress tasks that may clarify what is driving these links. The current study begins to address this gap by testing the effects of SA and laboratory-induced peer rejection on acute alcohol and cannabis use willingness within a simulated party setting. METHOD 80 emerging adults (18-25 years; 70% women) endorsing lifetime alcohol and cannabis use were randomly assigned to experience rejection or neutral social cues. They rated their willingness to use alcohol and cannabis before and after cue exposure within the simulated party. A hierarchical regression tested the main and interaction effects of SA symptoms and experimental condition (Rejection vs. Neutral) on alcohol and cannabis use willingness, controlling for past-year use frequency and willingness to accept any offers (e.g., food and nonalcoholic drinks). RESULTS There were statistically significant main (but not interaction) effects of SA and experimental condition on cannabis use willingness. Higher SA and Rejection exposure were each associated with greater cannabis use willingness. There were neither main nor interaction effects on alcohol willingness. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that elevated SA increases cannabis use willingness across social contexts, regardless of Rejection exposure, while Rejection exposure increases use willingness similarly across levels of SA. Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders in children that have a negative impact on the children's psychosocial development, cognition, behaviors, schooling, finally resulting to high stressors experiencing. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the psychosocial stressors of epileptic children. Research design: A descriptive study design was conducted. Setting: This study was conducted at Neurological clinic of Children's University Hospital at Ain Shams University. Sample: Convenience sample was selected which included (100) epileptic children. Tools of data collection: Interviewing questionnaire tool for children was used which included two parts: Socio- demographic characteristics and medical history of the epileptic children and their parents, and the psychosocial stressors inventory. Results: More than three fifths of studied epileptic children had high psychological stressors and more than three quarter of studied epileptic children had high social stressors. Moreover, there were statistically significant relation between psychosocial stressors and socio-demographic features and medical history such as their age, area of residence, and medications compliance. Conclusion: The epileptic children have high psychosocial stressors in relation to their socio-demographic data and medical history. Furthermore, the majority of these stressors are due to illness precautions, medications side effects, epileptic fits, and the school. Recommendation: Develop and apply nursing intervention programs for epileptic children, their parents, and teachers to improve the knowledge, awareness, and attitudes towards epilepsy

Soldiers regularly participate in missions abroad and subjectively adapt to this situation. However, they have an increased lifetime cardiovascular risk compared to other occupational groups. To test the hypothesis that foreign deployment results in different stress habituation patterns, we investigated long-term psychological and bio-physiological stress responses to a repeated social stress task in healthy soldiers with and without foreign deployment. Ninety-one female and male soldiers from the BEST study (German armed forces deployment and stress) participated three times in the Trier Social Stress Test for groups (TSST-G) prior to, 6–8 weeks after and 1 year after the mission abroad and were compared to a control group without foreign deployment during the study period. They completed the State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory scale (STAI), the Primary Appraisal Secondary Appraisal questionnaire (PASA) and the Multidimensional Mood State Questionnaire (MDBF). Salivary cortisol and α-amylase, blood pressure, heart rate and heart rate variability were determined. Soldiers showed mental habituation over the three times with a significant decrease after the TSST-G in anxiousness (STAI) and cognitive stress appraisal (PASA), they were calmer and reported better mood (MDBF). Prior to the social stress part, the mood (MDBF) declined significantly. None of the biological and physiological markers showed any adaptation to the TSST-G. Mission abroad did not significantly influence any measured psychobiological marker when compared to soldiers without foreign deployment. Foreign deployment does not result in alterations in psychobiological social stress response patterns over 1 year after mission abroad which indicates that adaptation to acute social stress is highly maintained in healthy soldiers. The discrepancy between subjective perception and objective stress response has numerous clinical implications and should receive more attention.

Stressful life events are ubiquitous and well-known to negatively impact mental health. However, in both humans and animal models, there is large individual variability in how individuals respond to stress, with some but not all experiencing long-term adverse consequences. While there is growing understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of the stress response, much less is known about how neurocircuits shaped by lifetime experiences are activated during an initial stressor and contribute to this selective vulnerability versus resilience. We developed a model of acute social defeat stress (ASDS) that allows classification of male mice into “susceptible” (socially avoidant) versus “resilient” (expressing control-level social approach) one hour after exposure to six minutes of social stress. Using circuit tracing and high-resolution confocal imaging, we explored differences in activation and dendritic spine density and morphology in the prelimbic cortex to basolateral amygdala (PL→BLA) circuit in resilient versus susceptible mice. Susceptible mice had greater PL→BLA recruitment during ASDS and activated PL→BLA neurons from susceptible mice had more and larger mushroom spines compared to resilient mice. We hypothesized identified structure/function differences indicate an overactive PL→BLA response in susceptible mice and used an intersectional chemogenetic approach to inhibit the PL→BLA circuit during or prior to ASDS. We found in both cases that this blocked ASDS-induced social avoidance. Overall, we show PL→BLA structure/function differences mediate divergent behavioral responses to ASDS in male mice. These results support PL→BLA circuit overactivity during stress as a biomarker of trait vulnerability and potential target for prevention of stress-induced psychopathology.

Knowing the age at which the sexual orientation disparity in depression and anxiety symptoms first emerges and the early determinants of this disparity can suggest optimal timing and targets of supportive interventions. This prospective cohort study of children ages 3 to 15 (n = 417; 10.6% same-sex-attracted; 47.2% assigned female at birth) and their parents sought to determine the age at which the sexual orientation disparity in depression and anxiety symptoms first emerges and whether peer victimization and poor parental relationships mediate this disparity. Same-sex-attracted youth first demonstrated significantly higher depression symptoms at age 12 and anxiety symptoms at age 15 than exclusively other-sex-attracted youth. Age 12 peer victimization mediated the sexual orientation disparity in age 15 depression symptoms. Age 12 poor mother-child relationship mediated the sexual orientation disparity in age 15 anxiety symptoms. The findings are discussed in terms of implications for developmentally appropriate interventions against social stress during early development.

The dynamics of epidemics depend on how people's behavior changes during an outbreak. At the beginning of the epidemic, people do not know about the virus, then, after the outbreak of epidemics and alarm, they begin to comply with the restrictions and the spreading of epidemics may decline. Over time, some people get tired/frustrated by the restrictions and stop following them (exhaustion), especially if the number of new cases drops down. After resting for a while, they can follow the restrictions again. But during this pause the second wave can come and become even stronger then the first one. Studies based on SIR models do not predict the observed quick exit from the first wave of epidemics. Social dynamics should be considered. The appearance of the second wave also depends on social factors. Many generalizations of the SIR model have been developed that take into account the weakening of immunity over time, the evolution of the virus, vaccination and other medical and biological details. However, these more sophisticated models do not explain the apparent differences in outbreak profiles between countries with different intrinsic socio-cultural features. In our work, a system of models of the COVID-19 pandemic is proposed, combining the dynamics of social stress with classical epidemic models. Social stress is described by the tools of sociophysics. The combination of a dynamic SIR-type model with the classical triad of stages of the general adaptation syndrome, alarm-resistance-exhaustion, makes it possible to describe with high accuracy the available statistical data for 13 countries. The sets of kinetic constants corresponding to optimal fit of model to data were found. This study takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the multi-dimensionality of social stress within the spatiality of initial refugee reception centers in Berlin. By focusing particularly on the experiences of women who fled from Syria and Afghanistan, it situates this humanitarian issue within an analytical framework of gender-sensitive and culturally sensitive research and policymaking. Through qualitative interviews with 11 refugee women, the connection between the spatiality of initial reception centers and social stress is explored. This is done by thematically coding the data collected in the context of nine different initial reception centers across various districts in the city of Berlin. The study shows that in terms of the intercultural needs and practices of these women, social stress is triggered by a lack of essential privacy within the spatiality of these structures. However, privacy is not limited to a physical enclosure—it is about having control/freedom over different aspects of everyday life. To evaluate how social stressors, organizational stressors, and physical strains are related to suicidal ideation (SI) at an urban police department. Data was gathered between January–February 2020. Each case of SI was matched to 4 controls based on age, gender and military experience for a total sample size of 110 officers. Conditional logistic regression models assessed the relationship between stress domains and SI. Five percent (5%) of the officers surveyed (n = 22) reported SI. After adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, high levels of organizational stress, versus low organizational stress, were associated with 9.2 (95% CI: 1.1–75.8) times the odds of SI compared to no SI. In the fully adjusted model (i.e., sociodemographics and other stressors), medium and high levels of social stress showed 5.1 (95% CI: 1.1–23.5) and 3.8 (95% CI: 1.0–14.5) higher odds of SI compared to no SI. The likelihood of SI increased incrementally as higher number of stressors were reported, suggesting a significant dose-response relationship. This study found organizational and social stress were the strongest predictors of SI for law enforcement officers, as opposed to physical strain. This study serves to further inform the multi-dimensionality of police stress pathways to advise department psychological prevention efforts.

The current biopsychosocial paradigm in medicine and medical psychology ensures the development of the theory and methodology of medical psychodiagnostics as a comprehensive study of psychological and psychosocial factors underlying mental adaptation. The diagnostic of prenosological and initial manifestations of borderline spectrum disorders designated as adjustment disorders in ICD-10 (F43.2), requires the criteria qualification of real or potential stressogenic social functioning conditions, thus, an arsenal of adequate methods of clinical and medical-psychosocial psychodiagnostics is required. The questionnaire «Social Frustration Level» represents one of such methods. The study of social frustration phenomenon as a predictor of emotional tension and stress resistance allows to characterize personality traits in relation to environmental influence and assess the specificity and pathogenic significance of socially frustrating factors. The article substantiates theoretical and methodological foundations of the questionnaire, its attributive characteristics — the phenomena of external and internal social frustration identified in medical psychodiagnostics for the first time. Socio-diagnostic criteria are illustrated by examples of the practical use in medical psychodiagnostics of social frustration in teachers of mass schools, the military and in patients with focal epilepsy. The specified research contingent is united by the problem of stress resistance in crisis situations (including a disease situation and the attitude to the disease). The questionnaire «Social Frustration Level» can be considered as a necessary form of psychosocial diagnostics of stress genesis, a source of information in screening psychoprophylactic studies, as well as in the forming of indications for psycho- and sociotherapy.

BackgroundThe prevalence of serious psychological distress (SPD) was elevated during the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA, but the relationships of SPD during the pandemic with pre-pandemic SPD, pre-pandemic socioeconomic status, and pandemic-related social stressors remain unexamined.MethodsA probability-based sample (N = 1751) of the US population age 20 and over was followed prospectively from February 2019 (T1), with subsequent interviews in May 2020 (T2) and August 2020 (T3). Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess prospective relationships between T1 SPD with experiences of disruption of employment, health care, and childcare at T2. Binary logistic regression was then used to assess relationships of T1 SPD, and socioeconomic status and T2 pandemic-related stressors with T3 SPD.ResultsAt T1, SPD was associated with age, race/ethnicity, and household income. SPD at T1 predicted disruption of employment (OR 4.5, 95% CI 1.4–3.8) and health care (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.4–7.1) at T2. SPD at T1 (OR 10.2, 95% CI 4.5–23.3), low household income at T1 (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1–6.4), disruption of employment at T2 (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.4–7.6), and disruption of healthcare at T2 (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.5–7.2) were all significantly associated with elevated risk for SPD at T3.ConclusionsElevated risk for SPD during the COVID-19 pandemic is related to multiple psychological and social pathways that are likely to interact over the life course. Policies and interventions that target individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions as well as those experiencing persistent unemployment should be high priorities in the mental health response to the pandemic.

The Gini coefficient features prominently in Amartya Sen’s 1973 and 1997 seminal work on income inequality and social welfare. We construct the Gini coefficient from social‐psychological building blocks, reformulating it as a ratio between a measure of social stress and aggregate income. We determine when as a consequence of an income gain by an individual, an increase in the social stress measure dominates a concurrent increase in the aggregate income, such that the magnitude of the Gini coefficient increases. By integrating our approach to the construction of the Gini coefficient with Sen’s social welfare function, we are able to endow the function with a social‐psychological underpinning, showing that this function, too, is a composite of a measure of social stress and aggregate income. We reveal a dual role played by aggregate income as a booster of social welfare in Sen’s social welfare function. Quite surprisingly, we find that a marginal increase of income for any individual, regardless of the position of the individual in the hierarchy of incomes, improves welfare as measured by Sen’s social welfare function.

Chronic stress induces peripheral and intracerebral immune changes and inflammation, contributing to neuropathology and behavioral abnormalities relevant to psychiatric disorders such as depression. Although the pathological implication of many peripheral factors such as pro‐inflammatory cytokines, hormones, and macrophages has been demonstrated, the roles of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) for chronic stress mechanisms remain poorly investigated. Here, we report that chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)‐induced social avoidance phenotype, assessed by a previously untested three‐chamber social approach test, can be distinguished by multiple pro‐inflammatory cytokines and EV‐associated molecular signatures in the blood. We found that the expression patterns of miRNAs distinguished the CSDS‐susceptible mice from the CSDS‐resilient mice. Social avoidance behavior scores were also estimated with good accuracy by the expression patterns of multiple EV‐associated miRNAs. We also demonstrated that EVs enriched from the CSDS‐susceptible mouse sera upregulated the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines in the LPS‐stimulated microglia‐like cell lines. Our results indicate the role of circulating EVs and associated miRNAs in CSDS susceptibility, which may be related to pro‐inflammatory mechanisms underlying stress‐induced neurobehavioral outcomes., Social avoidance behaviors after chronic social defeat stress are accompanied by altered extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the blood, together with increased levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines. EV‐associated miRNA expression patterns are correlated with social behavioral scores. In addition, EVs are shown to enhance the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines in cultured microglia‐like cells. Thus, EVs may contribute to pro‐inflammatory responses in socially stressed mice.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Nigeria bear a disproportionately higher burden of HIV. Meyer’s minority stress theory posits that social stress due to the discrimination, violence, and stigma experienced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women (LGBs)—due to their sexual orientation—may contribute to psychological problems, including mental health problems, substance use, and HIV sexual risk-taking. Between March and June 2019, we recruited 406 GBMSM from four states in Nigeria (Abuja, Delta, Lagos, and Plateau) to complete a cross-sectional survey at local community-based organizations. We utilized structural equation modeling to test whether psychological problems and substance use mediated the relationship between minority stress and HIV sexual risk-taking (condomless anal sex and number of sexual partners) among GBMSM in Nigeria. Minority stress (β = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.44–0.72, p ≤ .001), substance use (β = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.27–0.59, p = .004), and psychological problems (β = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.28–0.45 p = .012) had moderate associations with HIV sexual risk-taking. We found that psychological problems mediated the relationship between minority stress and HIV sexual risk-taking. Interventions focused on addressing psychological problems may help mitigate the effects of minority stress on HIV sexual risk-taking among GBMSM in Nigeria.

The creation of universally effective and safe correctors of biliary secretion disorders is becoming more timely. There is an urgent need for scientists to find drugs that would correct blood cholesterol levels and metabolism in liver effectively and without limiting side effects. The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of using corvitin to correct stress-induced biliary disorders of the liver of male rats. Materials and methods. The article looks at recent research dealing with changes in the bile acid composition of outbred male rats’ bile under chronic social stress (social defeat in daily male confrontations, 14 days) when using Corvitin (1 mg/kg, intragastrically, 7 days). Chronic social stress was created by daily agonistic interactions between animals. The state of memory and the level of research activity in the object recognition test (cognitive test) were also studied. The main fractions of conjugated bile acids (taurocholic, taurohenodeoxycholic and taurodeoxycholic, glycocholic, glycochenodeoxycholic and glycodeoxycholic and free ones – cholic, chenodeoxycholic and deoxycholic) were determined by the method of thin layer chromatography of bile. Results and discussion. Chronic social stress leads to a slight increase in the overall activity of the experimental animals, but significantly impairs the processes of recognition and memory. Social stress significantly inhibits the processes that ensure the synthesis, biotransformation and transport of bile acids in the bile. Also, chronic social stress causes changes in bile production, which reduce the solubilization properties of bile and increase the risk of lithogenesis. Conclusion. The use of Corvitin simultaneously with the simulation of experimental social stress normalized the biliary secretory function of the liver, which indicates a high potential for the use of Corvitin as a corrective factor in chronic social stress. Corvitin used by us in the conditions of experimental social stress to some extent corrected the content of bile acids in the liver of male rats, which indicates the ability of this drug to interfere with the metabolism of cholate in liver cells, in the mechanisms of bile acid transport. Background Both parental and neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) are linked to poorer health independently of personal SES measures, but the biological mechanisms are unclear. Our objective was to examine these influences via epigenetic age acceleration (EAA)—the discrepancy between chronological and epigenetic ages. Methods We examined three USA-based [Coronary Artery Risk Disease in Adults (CARDIA) study, Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) and Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Social Stressors (PROGRESS)] and one Mexico-based (Project Viva) cohort. DNA methylation was measured using Illumina arrays, personal/parental SES by questionnaire and neighbourhood disadvantage from geocoded address. In CARDIA, we examined the most strongly associated personal, parental and neighbourhood SES measures with EAA (Hannum’s method) at study years 15 and 20 separately and combined using a generalized estimating equation (GEE) and compared with other EAA measures (Horvath’s EAA, PhenoAge and GrimAge calculators, and DunedinPoAm). Results EAA was associated with paternal education in CARDIA [GEEs: βsome college = −1.01 years (−1.91, −0.11) and β Conclusions These findings suggest that EAA captures epigenetic impacts of paternal education independently of personal SES later in life. Longitudinal studies should explore these associations at different life stages and link them to health outcomes. EAA could be a useful biomarker of SES-associated health and provide important insight into the pathogenesis and prevention of chronic disease.

Aims: Prenatal maternal stress and anxiety affect the offspring causing low birth weight, decreased motor activity, and developmental delays. Ocimum sanctum is cherished as the holiest herb in India and possesses strong adaptogenic, memory enhancer, and anti-stress properties. This study aimed to assess the effect of O. sanctum leaf aqueous extract on preventing pregnancy related stress impact on the mice offspring. Methodology: Pregnant female mice were treated with O. sanctum leaf aqueous extract throughout the gestation period at 100 mg/kg, p.o, while exposed to resident–intruder social stress paradigm. Physiological, morphological, and behavioral aspects of offspring were observed for 6 weeks. Results: Pups of O. sanctum treated mothers showed significantly (P < 0.05) improved body weight, body length, and head length. O. sanctum treatment has significantly reduced eye opening and pinna detachment period (P < 0.05-0.01), and duration for gaining surface righting and mid-air righting refluxes (P < 0.05). O. Sanctum has significantly increased (P < 0.05-0.01) number of correct entries in radial arm maze and line crossing in open field performance. Conclusion: The study outcome proves the beneficial role of O. Sanctum in ameliorating prenatal stress and anxiety induced deleterious effect on offspring.

BackgroundThe serotonin 1A (5-HT1A) receptor has been implicated in depression and suicidal behavior. Lower resting cortisol levels are associated with higher 5-HT1A receptor binding, and both differentiate suicide attempters with depression. However, it is not clear whether 5-HT1A receptor binding and cortisol responses to stress are related to familial risk and resilience for suicidal behavior.Methods[11C]CUMI-101 positron emission tomography imaging to quantify regional brain 5-HT1A receptor binding was conducted in individuals considered to be at high risk for mood disorder or suicidal behavior on the basis of having a first- or second-degree relative(s) with an early onset mood disorder and history of suicidal behavior. These high-risk individuals were subdivided into the following groups: high risk resilient having no mood disorder or suicidal behavior (n = 29); high risk with mood disorder and no suicidal behavior history (n = 31); and high risk with mood disorder and suicidal behavior (n = 25). Groups were compared with healthy volunteers without a family history of mood disorder or suicidal behavior (n = 34). Participants underwent the Trier Social Stress Task (TSST). All participants were free from psychotropic medications at the time of the TSST and PET scanning.ResultsWe observed no group differences in 5-HT1A receptor binding considering all regions simultaneously, nor did we observe heterogeneity of the effect of group across regions. These results were similar across outcome measures (BPND for all participants and BPp in a subset of the sample) and definitions of regions of interest (ROIs; standard or serotonin system-specific ROIs). We also found no group differences on TSST outcomes. Within the high risk with mood disorder and suicidal behavior group, lower BPp binding (β = −0.084, SE = 0.038, P = .048) and higher cortisol reactivity to stress (β = 9.25, 95% CI [3.27,15.23], P = .004) were associated with higher lethality attempts. There were no significant relationships between 5-HT1A binding and cortisol outcomes.Conclusions5-HT1A receptor binding in ROIs was not linked to familial risk or resilience protecting against suicidal behavior or mood disorder although it may be related to lethality of suicide attempt. Future studies are needed to better understand the biological mechanisms implicated in familial risk for suicidal behavior and how hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function influences such risk.

Maternal effects can shape the phenotypes of offspring, but the extent to which a layer breeder’s experience can affect commercial laying hens remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of maternal age and maternal environment on laying hens’ behaviour and stress response. In our first experiment (E1), commercial hybrid hens were reared either in aviary or barren brooding cages, then housed in aviary, conventional cages or furnished (enriched) cages, thus forming different maternal housing treatments. Hens from each treatment were inseminated at three ages, and measures of response to manual restraint and social stress were assessed in offspring. In experiment 2 (E2), maternal age effects on offsprings' stress response were further investigated using fertile eggs from commercial breeder flocks at three ages. In E1, maternal age affected struggling and corticosterone during manual restraint, feather pecking and pulling and comb wounds. Additionally, maternal rearing and housing in aviary systems showed positive effects on measures of behaviour and stress response in offspring. Effects of maternal age were not replicated in E2, possibly due to methodological differences or higher tolerance to maternal effects in commercial breeders. Overall, we recommend researchers report parent stock age to increase comparison across studies and thus our understanding of maternal age effects.

BackgroundFatigue is a prevalent symptom in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Individual differences in chronic stress may affect the experience and persistence of fatigue, and this may vary between the sexes. Therefore, we studied the effect of chronic stress on the course of fatigue over a 2-year period after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and examined the moderating effects of sex.Methods1682 patients (78% men, age = 67.1 ± 10.6) were recruited and filled out multiple self-report questionnaires at baseline, one, 12, and 24 months post-PCI, including questions on demographics, fatigue (HCS). Multiple chronic stressors were assessed at baseline: work stress (ERI16), marital stress (MMQ-6), early life events (Life Events Questionnaire) and social stress. Latent class factor analysis (LatentGOLD) was used to construct a comprehensive chronic stress index. Linear mixed modeling examined the predictive quality of predictors and covariates.ResultsFatigue was found to substantially decrease over the first month post-PCI, then stabilized at a moderate level. Chronic stress impacted both the level and course of fatigue by increasing its level and delaying recovery. Overall and across time, women reported more fatigue than men. The level and course effects of chronic stress and sex were independent of demographic, health behavioral, and medical covariates.ConclusionsIndividual differences in chronic stress impact both the level and course of fatigue post-PCI, with women being affected most. Future research could further explain the mechanisms underlying the observed relationships. Developing and testing interventions focusing on exercise and stress-reduction could be used to alleviate fatigue.

Ketamine has been demonstrated to be a rapid-onset and long-lasting antidepressant, but its underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Recent studies have emerged microRNAs as important modulators for depression treatment. In this study, we report that miR-98-5p is downregulated in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice subjected to chronic social stress, while overexpressing it by its agonist alleviates depression-like behaviors. More importantly, we demonstrate that miR-98-5p is upregulated by ketamine administration, while inhibition of it by its antagonist blocks the antidepressant effect of ketamine. Our data implicate a novel molecular mechanism underlying the antidepressant effect of ketamine, and that therapeutic strategies targeting miR-98-5p could exert beneficial effects for depression treatment.

Los desastres naturales traen consigo graves consecuencias para el desarrollo de las comunidades locales afectadas, paralizando parcial o totalmente sus actividades económicas, sociales y culturales. Esto sucedió tras el fuerte terremoto del 16 de abril de 2016 en la provincia ecuatoriana de Manabí, que produjo una gran cantidad de fallecidos y heridos y dañó seriamente la infraestructura hotelera, con grave afectación de las actividadesde turismo en la modalidad de sol y playa que se desarrollaban en la provincia, que recibe su impulso económico del sector turístico. Para reanimar la dinámica económica y social del cantón Portoviejo (capital de la provincia), el gobierno municipal realizó desde el 2016 hasta el 2020 una serie de actividades vinculadas a la cocina regional, tales como los festivales gastronómicos en las parroquias rurales y una competencia gastronómica (la Copa Culinaria), entre las cocineras populares de tales parroquias. Se hizo además, conjuntamente con estas actividades, la solicitud de reconocimiento como Ciudad Creativa Gastronómica de la UNESCO para la ciudad de Portoviejo, designación que fue aprobada por este organismo en 2019. En este artículo se evalúa la eficiencia de estas medidas como elementos reactivadores en una zona posdesastre. Con ese propósito se realizó una investigación de tipo cualitativa, aplicando una combinación de los métodos deductivo e inductivo, desde una perspectiva histórico-comparativa durante el período 2016-2020. La información necesaria para el análisis fue recopilada mediante técnicas de observación de campo, investigación documental, encuestas, entrevistas y grupos focales. La principal conclusión del estudio es que las medidas de intervención promovidas por el gobierno municipal (entre ellas, los festivales gastronómicos liderados por el GAD Municipal de Portoviejo, basados en los platos tradicionales de cada localidad; la Copa Culinaria, la declaratoria de platos tradicionales como patrimonio nacional y la declaratoria por parte de la UNESCO como Ciudad Creativa categoría Gastronomía), con la participación activa de las comunidades locales cumplieron –en la escala de la experiencia y en la modalidad de turismo gastronómico nacional– los propósitos planteados para dinamizar las comunidades locales deprimidas por la acción del grave terremoto que las afectó severamente. Natural disasters have serious consequences for the development of the affected local communities, partially or totally paralyzing their economic, social and cultural activities. This happened after the strong earthquake of April 16, 2016 in the Ecuadorian province of Manabí, which produced a large number of deaths and injuries and seriously damaged the hotel infrastructure, with serious affectation of the activities of tourism in the sun and beach modality that were developed in the province, which receives its economic boost from the tourism sector. In order to reactivate the economic and social dynamics of the canton of Portoviejo (capital of the province), the Municipal Government carried out from 2016 to 2020 a series of activities related to regional cuisine, such as gastronomic festivals in rural parishes and a gastronomic competition (the Culinary Cup), among the popular women cooks of such parishes. In conjunction with these activities and for the recognition of Portoviejo as a Creative Gastronomic City, an application to this UNESCO initiative was also made, designation that was approved by this body in 2019. In this context, this article aims to evaluate the efficiency of these measures as reactivating elements in a post-disaster area. For this purpose, a qualitative type of research was conducted, applying a combination of deductive and inductive methods, from a historical-comparative perspective during the period 2016-2020. The information for the analysis was collected through field observation techniques, as well as documentary research, surveys, interviews and focus groups. The main conclusion of the study is that the intervention measures promoted by the Municipal Government (among them, the gastronomic festivals led by the GAD Municipal de Portoviejo, based on the traditional dishes of each locality; the Culinary Cup, the declaration of traditional dishes as national heritage and the declaration by UNESCO as a Creative City in the Gastronomy category), with the active participation of local communities, fulfilled (on the scale of the experience and in the modality of national gastronomic tourism) the purposes set out to revitalize local communities depressed by the action of the severe earthquake that severely affected them. Cela s’est produit après le fort tremblement de terre du 16 avril 2016 dans la province équatorienne de Manabí, qui a fait un grand nombre de morts et de blessés, et a gravement endommagé les infrastructures hôtelières, affectant sérieusement les activités de tourisme de soleil et de plage dans la province, qui reçoit son impulsion économique du secteur touristique. Pour relancer la dynamique économique et sociale du canton de Portoviejo, capitale de la province, le gouvernement municipal a réalisé, de 2016 à 2020, une série d’activités liées à la cuisine régionale, comme des festivals gastronomiques dans les paroisses rurales et un concours gastronomique, « la Coupe culinaire » entre les cuisiniers populaires de ces paroisses. En outre, parallèlement à ces activités, une candidature a été déposée pour la création de la Cité créative de la gastronomie de l’UNESCO pour la ville de Portoviejo, et sa désignationa été approuvée en 2019. Dans cet article, nous évaluons l’efficacité de ces mesures comme éléments de réactivation après la catastrophe. À cette fin, nous avons mené une recherche qualitative, en appliquant une combinaison de méthodes déductives et inductives, dans une perspective historico-comparative au cours de la période 2016-2020, en recueillant les informations nécessaires à l’analyse, en utilisant des techniques d’observation sur le terrain, des recherches documentaires, des enquêtes, des entretiens et des groupes de discussion. Foi o caso do forte terramoto de 16 de Abril de 2016 na província equatoriana de Manabí, que causou um grande número de mortos e feridos, danificando gravemente as infra estruturas hoteleiras e afetando, consequentemente, as actividades de turismo solar e de praia que são centrais para a economia regional. Para relançar a dinâmica económica e social do cantão do Portoviejo, capital da província, o governo municipal realizou, de 2016 a 2020, uma série de actividades ligadas à cozinha regional, tais como festivais gastronómicos em freguesias rurais, bem como um concurso gastronómico (a Taça da Culinária), entre os cozinheiros populares destas freguesias. Além disso, em conjunto com estas actividades, foi feito um pedido para a criação da Cidade Criativa da Gastronomia da UNESCO para a cidade de Portoviejo, uma designação que acabou sendoaprovada em 2019. Background: This systematic review evaluated whether there is evidence for (i) increased emotional stress levels, and (ii) a different biological stress response or rhythm [i.e., cortisol stress response, diurnal rhythm, or cortisol awakening response (CAR)] in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) relative to controls. Thirdly, the evidence for an association between emotional and biological stress in ASD was reviewed.Method: MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and SAGE journals were searched until December 2020. In this review, there were no limitations regarding age, sex, or intelligence quotient. Studies were only reviewed if results were compared with controls without a developmental disorder. Only salivary cortisol was considered as biological stress measure.Results: Thirty-one studies were reviewed. Significantly higher self-and parent-reported emotional stress levels were found in individuals with ASD compared to controls. Regarding biological stress, the few studies in adults reported comparable cortisol stress responses and rhythms between both groups. In children/adolescents with ASD relative to controls, an increased, blunted, or similar cortisol stress response was reported, whereas the CAR did not differ in most studies, and diurnal rhythm was described as blunted or similar. Most studies found no significant association between parent-reported emotional stress and biological stress in ASD.Conclusions: Current findings suggest that heightened emotional stress is a clinically significant factor in ASD. To unravel the cortisol response and rhythm, research in specific subgroups within the ASD spectrum is warranted, aiming at a higher frequency of cortisol measurements, prefer-ably combined with momentary emotional stress measurements.

The present paper evaluates the effect of physical activity on the increase of the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine induced by intermittent social stress and on the neuroinflammatory response that contributes to the enhancement of drug response. For that purpose, three studies were designed in which social stress was induced in different samples of mice through a social-defeat protocol; the mice underwent an increase of physical activity by different modalities of voluntary wheel running (continuous and intermittent access). The results showed that continuous access to running wheels prior to stress enhanced the establishment of cocaine place preference, whereas an intermittent access exerted a protective effect. Wheel running contingent to cocaine administration prevented the development of conditioned preference, and if applied during the extinction of drug memories, it exerted a dual effect depending on the stress background of the animal. Our biological analysis revealed that increased sensitivity to cocaine may be related to the fact that wheel running promotes inflammation though the increase of IL-6 and BDNF levels. Together, these results highlight that physical exercise deeply impacts the organism’s response to stress and cocaine, and these effects should be taken into consideration in the design of a physical intervention.

Background Alcohol binge drinking may compromise the functioning of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), i.e. the neural hub for processing reward and aversive responses. Methods As socially stressful events pose particular challenges at developmental stages, this research applied the resident–intruder paradigm as a model of social stress, to highlight behavioural neuroendocrine and molecular maladaptive plasticity in rats at withdrawal from binge-like alcohol exposure in adolescence. In search of a rescue agent, cannabidiol (CBD) was selected due to its favourable effects on alcohol- and stress-related harms. Results Binge-like alcohol exposed intruder rats displayed a compromised defensive behaviour against the resident and a blunted response of the stress system, in addition to indexes of abnormal dopamine (DA)/glutamate plasticity and dysfunctional spine dynamics in the NAc. CBD administration (60 mg/kg) was able to: (1) increase social exploration in the binge-like alcohol exposed intruder rats, at the expenses of freezing time, and in control rats, which received less aggressive attacks from the resident; (2) reduce corticosterone levels independently on alcohol previous exposure; (3) restore DA transmission and (4) facilitate excitatory postsynaptic strength and remodelling. Conclusions Overall, the maladaptive behavioural and synaptic plasticity promoted by the intersection between binge-like alcohol withdrawal and exposure to adverse social stress can be rescued by a CBD détente effect that results in a successful defensive strategy, supported by a functional endocrine and synaptic plasticity. The current data highlight CBD's relevant therapeutic potential in alcohol- and stress-related harms, and prompt further investigation on its molecular targets.

Although there is evidence of sex differences in responding to social stress, and that age when stressed matters, females are understudied and adult-stress comparisons are few. Here, we investigated stress effects on reward sensitivity by examining rats' choice of social versus sucrose reward in a continuous spatial allocation design. We predicted social instability stress (SS) in adolescence would result in greater social discounting (spend less time near a novel peer when provided access to sucrose) relative to nonstressed controls (CTLs) and relative to SS in adulthood. All increased sucrose intake as the concentration increased, with no evidence of social discounting. SS males tested soon after the stress had a decrease in intake, whereas those tested long after had an increase in both time near the peer and in intake. CTL and SS females did not differ in intake, although their dose-response curves differed when tested soon after the SS. We also tested whether SS changed the stimulus value of the rat as a social peer; when tested in triads, CTL rats spent similar time in interaction with SS versus CTL rats. In sum, effects of SS on reward sensitivity were greater for males irrespective of administered in adolescence versus adulthood.

Body lesions in pigs are a common welfare concern, particularly during the weaning period. These lesions can lead to pain, infection, and impaired mobility, resulting in reduced growth performance and increased mortality. Moreover, weaning stress can affect gut microbiota, immune response and increase the oxidative stress of piglets during this transition period. It has been hypothesised that social stress and body lesions could contribute to affect the gut microbiota, physiological and immune response of piglets. The study aims to evaluate the impact of the body lesions due to social stress on microbial profile, immune response, and oxidative status of weaned piglets. Lesion score (LS) on skin, tail, ear, neck, middle trunk, and hind quarters was measured 1 week (28 days of age, T1) and 7 weeks postweaning (T2) on 45 tail-docked pigs according to the method suggested from the Walfer Quality® (2009) on a scale from 0 to 2. Based on the LS, at T1, piglets were classified as High LS (n = 16), when LS was >1 in at least two of the areas considered, or Low LS (n = 29). At T2, based on the same scoring system and to the LS observed at T1, piglets were divided into four groups: High to Low LS (H-L, n = 11), High to High LS (H-H, n = 5), Low to Low LS (L-L, n = 21) and Low to High LS (L-H, n = 8). Blood and faecal samples were collected at T1 and T2. At T1, pigs with a high LS had a lower biological antioxidant potential compared with the L group (P < 0.02). At T2, the L-H group had a lower Reactive Oxygen Metabolites concentration compared with the H-H group (P = 0.03) while the L-L group had a lower concentration of Immunoglobulin A compared with H-H and L-H groups (P = 0.02 and P = 0.04, respectively). At T1, piglets with high LS had a different microbiota compared to piglets with low LS (R2 = 0.04, P < 0.01). Low LS pigs were characterised by a higher abundance of Firmicutes, Blautia, Eubacterium coprostanoligenes, Faecalibacterium, Megasphaera, Subdoligranulum (P.adj < 0.05), while pigs with high LS were characterised by higher abundance of Bacteroidota, Rikenellaceae RC9, Prevotellaceae UCG-003, uncultured-Lachnospiraceae and uncultured-Oscillospiraceae (P.adj < 0.05). At T2, the H-H group were characterised by Oscillospirales-UCG-010, H-L by Agatobachter and L-L by Alloprevotella (P.adj < 0.05). Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between body lesions, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota in weaned pigs.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to expand available knowledge on predictors of male inmate violence by examining a large set of variables offered by the importation, deprivation and threat appraisal and coping theories. Design/methodology/approach A total of 465 male inmates from five medium-security prisons in Wisconsin completed surveys to report demographics, violence, personality, social stressors and healthy coping behaviors to help manage risk by identifying key factors. Findings Inmates reported more violence with the “imported” characteristics of younger age, less incarceration, no college experience and personality patterns of impulsiveness, hostility and internal locus of control. More violence was reported by inmates with social stressors experienced from family and correctional staff. Additionally, less violence was reported by inmates with more healthy coping behaviors of exercise and social support, especially from family and other inmates. Research limitations/implications One must remain uncertain about whether similar patterns of demographics, personality, social stressors and coping behaviors associated with inmate violence would be found in other US prisons. Future research can determine whether similar predictors of violence are found for women inmates and the consideration of ethnicity should be warranted when examining predictors of inmate violence. Practical implications Prison administrators can develop new programs to reduce social stressors and increase healthy coping behaviors found by this study to be significantly associated with reduced violence, exercise and social support from other inmates and family. Social implications This research recommends that educating and training correctional staff for a trauma-informed care approach is an integral part of lessening the effects of “pains of imprisonment” on inmate violence and healing the effects of trauma. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study provides the first direct comparison of social stressors from other inmates, correctional staff or family members outside the prison as possible predictors of male inmate violence.

Social-ecological systems dependent on fisheries must be resilient or adapt to remain viable in the face of change. Here, we identified possible interventions (termed “adaptation options”) from published literature, aimed at supporting social or ecological resilience and/or aiding adaptation to changes induced by environmental or social stressors. Our searches centered on nations/regions across North America, Europe, and the South Pacific, encompassing fisheries literature with and without a climate change focus, to compare how, when, and by whom interventions are currently or potentially implemented. We expected that adaptation options within a climate change context would have a greater focus on enhancing social resilience due to a connection with climate change adaptation assessment methodology. Instead, we found a greater focus on ecological resilience, likely indicating a focus on management adaptation. This pattern, along with the more extensive use of social adaptation options responsively and outside the context of climate change, along with an importance in bottom-up influences in implementing them, suggests a general lack of centralized planning and organization with regards to adaptation of stakeholders. Determining how adaptation options are created, chosen, and implemented is a crucial step within or external to ecosystem-based management, especially if planned stakeholder adaption is the goal.

The deleterious mental health effects associated with the COVID‐19 pandemic are increasingly apparent, however, questions remain about the extent to which pandemic‐related stressor exposure has contributed to increased psychological distress among an already disadvantaged group, individuals with disabilities. The first aim of the study was to examine the distribution of pandemic‐related stressors across multiple dimensions—employment, personal and family finances, personal relationships, and quality of social life—among individuals with and without disabilities. The second aim of the study was to examine the association between a composite COVID‐19 stressor score and two mental health outcomes—depressive and anxiety symptoms—among the two subsamples. The study used quota‐based online survey data (N = 2043) collected in the summer of 2020 from adults (18 and older) residing in the Intermountain West, half of whom had a self‐reported disability. Study results demonstrated that individuals with disabilities experienced pandemic‐related stressors at significantly higher rates relative to their non‐disabled counterparts. Further, pandemic stressor exposure was associated with greater negative effects on their psychological well‐being. We argue that the COVID‐19 pandemic is generating a secondary mental illness pandemic, and that individuals with disabilities are affected by it at significantly higher proportions.

Adoption of certain behavioral and social routines that organize and structure the home environment may help families navigate the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The current cross-sectional study aimed to assess family routines prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine associations with individual and family well-being. Using a national sample, 300 caregivers of children ages 6-18 were surveyed using Amazon Mechanical Turk platform during the first three months of COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Caregivers reported on family demographics, COVID-19-related stress, engagement in family routines (prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic), stress mindset, self-efficacy, and family resiliency. Overall, families reported engaging in fewer routines during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to prior to the pandemic. COVID-19-related stress was highest in low-income families, families of healthcare workers, and among caregivers who had experienced the COVID-19 virus. Moreover, COVID-19-related stress was negatively related to self-efficacy, positively related to an enhancing stress mindset, and negatively related to family resilience. Engagement in family routines buffered relations between COVID-19-related stress and family resilience, such that COVID-19-related stress was not associated with lower family resilience among families that engaged in high levels of family routines. Results suggest that family routines were challenging to maintain in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, but were associated with better individual and family well-being during this period of acute health, economic, and social stress., Highlights Families reported engaging in fewer routines during the COVID-19 pandemic, when compared to prior to the pandemic.Families reported significant reductions in child bedtime routines and screen time limitations during the COVID-19 pandemic, when compared to prior to the pandemic.Engagement in family routines buffered the impact of stress on family resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
