The holy cards from 1840–1914 and their décor are important carriers of Christian traditions and symbolism, which is why this paper not only explores the meanings of the elements and symbols used in the décor of said holy cards and, in particular, their borders but also focuses on the evolution of these devotional images and discusses the production from the main publication centres such as Antwerp, Augsburg, Prague, Düsseldorf and Paris. One of the aspects discussed in this paper is the heritage of said holy cards in Lithuania and the décor of the holy cards from the ‘Album of Vilnius’ published by the leading publisher of this era Jan Kazimierz Wilczyński. During the period of 1840–1914, these holy cards were a promise from the increasingly strong Catholicism and, in a way, a ticket to the afterlife. The primary purpose of their pretty visual rendering was to surprise, attract and engage. Here, the key role was played by highly abundant and rich décor that even affected the shape of the cards and both served as an ornament and carried a charge of narrative and symbolism. Décor, the diversity of which was always driven by the competition between publishers, was a coherent alloy of various vectors such as imagination, eclecticism and mastery. Just like in the previous centuries, it remained a highly important part of framing and finishing the image. Quite often the décor and its iconography were organically integrated into the whole composition thus blurring the boundaries between the image and its decorations. This could primarily be said about the lace-imitation borders and elements of composition of the cards such as abundant religious symbols, ornaments and other motifs. The said paper “lace” was inspired by openwork paper or parchment cuttings produced by nuns in the Baroque era but now its manufacturing process involved new mechanic technologies that merged the pre-existing embossing and perforation techniques. The décor of the holy cards from the period in question was characterised by the plurality of styles and techniques and strong reliance on imitation. The mimicry of elements of the major styles, Gothic and Baroque in particular, was a very prominent feature. A different finishing of the same card could significantly change its visual impact. Colourfulness was also an important characteristic of said holy cards. With chromolithography becoming increasingly available, the appearance of the holy cards became simpler but they still retained a lot of décor elements. Flowers, flower bouquets and arabesques were the key constituents of holy cards manufactured by virtually any technique. The said devotional cards were influenced by the Light Romanticism; however, the divide between romance and sentimentality or triviality was blurry. Since 1840s, the holy cards became both the illustrative phenomenon of mass culture and the example of a mass-manufactured product: just like many other domestic objects of the era, they were lavishly decorated but their decorations were not just for decoration’s sake and usually had the semantic foundation of the Catholic traditions. The article presents activities of the Society for Making Lithuania Beautiful established in Lithuania in 1921. The vision and actions of its ideologue and first chairman Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas contributed to a more active process of memorialization in Lithuania, introducing the idea that it was necessary to build monuments as a ‘reward’ to prominent people or historical figures and fill in the vacuum created by the tsarist occupation which banned national monuments in the country. At that time, there was a great shortage of memorials, so the decision to introduce new identification marks in the form of a tree (every year, a tree with an agreed name and memorial function was planted in a special place) or of a monument was timely, as was the attempt to replant the war-torn country and beautify its surroundings. The imperative goal to make Lithuania beautiful turned into actions and traditions, such as annual visits and upkeep of historical objects, especially hill forts, tree planting and bird festivals. Tumas-Vaižgantas and the Society encouraged Lithuanians to nurture the landscape and cultural heritage objects, to create signs significant for the nation, and at the same time, spaces of local memory. In this way, the romanticized concept of statehood was introduced through visuals.

The religious pictures that were so widely circulated in society in the late 19th-early 20th centuries created a unique communication field, which the author attempts to overview in the publication. These mass-produced objects did not only make private devoutness easier to achieve, but were also the initial images of sacred and folk art works, an elementary reader, so to speak, in Christian iconography, or a certain artistic standard. They were a popular gift, or commemorative object, a greeting used in place of a postcard - simply, a part of cultural memory. In addition, they acquired some of the features characteristic of votive offerings. They would frame the daily existence of a given person: acting as a reminder of the first important celebration - one’s First Communion, whereas placed in the hands of the deceased, they would see them off onto their final journey. The pictures were also considered a funereal object. The auxiliary functions of devotional pictures are alike in almost all Catholic countries. Nonetheless, these small prints are also an intimate history of a small nation, or more precisely - its tiny fragments, authentic testimonies of the people and the period. Individual expression (inscriptions, provenances) - the content of these ego documents - added uniqueness to the mass-produced objects. Amid the background of the ban on printed material, the pictures developed into one of the aspects of the book-smuggling phenomenon, and a way of reviving Lithuanian writing. They are important to the development of Lithuanian writing, often testifying to the unity of religious and national goals. The Lithuanian pictures are also a reflection of the political realities of that period, recording the opposition to Russification and the first inclinations towards sovereignty.

The Supreme Committee for the 10-year Anniversary Celebration of the Independence of the Republic of Lithuania was established in 1928. The committee performed its mission making the national rally campaign of the celebration of two state festivals – February 16 and May 15. The organizational skills and experience of Vladas Nagevičius in developing the national important memorial symbols should be noted. He was the chairman of the committee and the director of the Military Museum. The year 1928 evidenced the first manifestation of the global cultural memory in Independent Lithuania. A model of the ceremonial communication of the state festivals was created. It had an important component – a monument – a materialization sign of the memorial. To achieve their objectives, the committee used the periodicals, the Church, radio, artists and, of course, local communities. Dealing with the problems of commemorative monuments – the lack of funding, the risk of cheap monuments, the need to design an exceptional memorial object with national traditions, the committee inspired to introduce the shape of a splendour wooden cross as an identity standard. The Committee and the majority of citizens considered that the traditional monuments of cross-crafting is a successful reflection of the nationhood. The Supreme Committee had an exceptional role in designing the commemorative process in 1928.

Straipsnyje pagal rašytinius ir ikonografinius šaltinius bandoma atkurti menkai tyrinėtojų aptartą senosios Dubingių katalikų bažnyčios pastato raidą, jos ypatumus. Medinė šventovė sudegė 1954 m., bet „iškodavus“ jos fundatorius, išvaizdos pokyčius ar titulo kaitą, atsiveria ir svarbūs Dubingių, Lietuvos istorijos etapai. Ypač reikšmingi pastatui tapo 1812-ieji.

Straipsnyje pirmąkart aptariama dailės marginalijos – masiškai tiražuoti XIX a. pab. – XX a. pr. katalikų religiniai paveikslėliai, jų funkcijos ir reikšmė. Bandoma apibrėžti, ką būtų galima vadinti lietuviškais religiniais paveikslėliais, nagrinėjamos jų ištyrimo, apskaitos problemos ir aktualijos. Pristatoma pagrindinio tuo metu lietuviškų paveikslėlių leidėjo, nepelnytai pamiršto knygnešio, spaudos darbuotojo ir Krokuvos lietuvių studentų šelpėjo Juozapo Angrabaičio (1859–1935) veikla. For the first time, the article discusses the marginalia in the art and writings – catholic devotional images, which were printed en masse in the late 19th – early 20th century, their functions and importance. A high number of remaining small-format lithographies, chromolithographies as well as copper, steel and wood engravings and other printed material is an indicator of the religiosity of our ancestors and an instrument of religious media, religious literacy and the spread of various religious cults. This is an implementation of the respect and recognition of the Saints, which served as a source of ecclesiastical iconography, as an example for those who created images for churches and rural environment (e. g. folk sculptures for memorial monuments). On the other hand, the abundance of pictures reflected the intensity of the devotional industry and trade relations as well as the fashion trends. In addition, pictures have an intimate and personal aspect. Their main function was not only to inspire the believer in prayer, but also as a memory which recalls various occasions or persons. The commemorative printed or handwritten texts of prayers in Lithuanian as well as the description of the First Communion, all kinds of religious events and holidays, donation, remembrance of the deceased, etc. are a reflection of the national literacy and pledge. In the context of the Lithuanian press ban and low literacy, they are important as small monuments of the written language and contrafactions and are attributable to the phenomenon of book smuggling. An attempt is being made in the article to define what may be termed as Lithuanian religious pictures as well as problems of their research and inventorying. Because of the polyvalence of pictures (images, printed texts, records made by hand, different printing techniques), they may be attributed to the works of graphics and small prints. Therefore, it is difficult to establish a united registry. Hence, cooperation between bibliographers and art historians in preparing the registry is in need. On the other hand, the identification of the publisher is challenging. After all, many pictures are imported and reprinted. The activity of the main publisher and distributor of the Lithuanian devotional images at the time, wantonly forgotten book smuggler, print worker and supporter of the Lithuanian students in Cracow, Juozapas Angrabaitis (1859–1935), is presented in the article. An attempt is being made to outline his contribution to the history of Lithuanian culture. In 1893, J. Angrabaitis issued an exclusive catalogue of the devotional images in Tilsit, which in the absence of other archival sources is the main background when investigating the supply of images in Lithuania of that time. An attempt is being made in the article to determine the trade relations of J. Angrabaitis as well as to ascertain the signatures, pseudonyms and acronyms of the printed images.

Straipsnio tikslas — atkreipti dėmesį į beveik mūsų neakceptuotus 1901 m. Bažnyčios jubiliejui skirtus memorialinius objektus kaip į tam tikrą istorinės informacijos versmę. Yra išlikę daug įvairių tų jubiliejinių metų atminimo ženklų: paminklų, kryžių, medalių, atliktos išpažinties kortelių, antrinių relikvijų iš Romos Šv. Petro bazilikos, devocinių paveikslėlių, jubiliejaus proga bažnyčioms dovanotų meno kūrinių, pastatytų Kryžiaus kelio stočių koplytėlių ir kita. Publikacijoje pristatomas šis materialusis 1901 m. jubiliejaus paveldas Lietuvoje ir tarptautinis jo kontekstas. Svarstoma, kas norima pasakyti minėtais artefaktais, kokius mūsų prosenelių siekius jie atskleidžia, ką liudija ir kokios reikšmės lietuvių kalbos teisių bei tautinės savimonės įtvirtinimui turėjo lietuviškos jubiliejaus memorijos. The Church has been celebrating Jubilee years since 1300 but the only Jubilee that was solemnly celebrated by the Catholics in the 19th century was that of 1825-1826. It is therefore not surprising that in 1900 when, after an interval of 75 years and in the context of ever increasing laicisation, this tradition was restored and pope Leo XIII announced the Great Jubilee year, this religious event was received with great attention and significance. Seeking to ensure that every believer could celebrate the jubilee and following the usual practice of earlier centuries, the Holy Father extended it for 6 months into the year 1901 in the dioceses of the whole world, including Lithuania. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the memorial items dedicated to the 1901 Church Jubilee that have been barely accepted in our cultural history so far and to present them as a certain source of historical information. The Jubilee was an exclusive occasion for the materialisation of both religious and nationalistic aspirations and the pretext for the legitimisation of the Lithuanian language. Many various memorabilia of this Jubilee year have survived such as monuments, crosses, medals, cards of performed confessions, secondary relics from St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, devotional cards, artworks donated to churches on the occasion of the Jubilee and small shrines depicting the Stations of Cross built at the time. Cult buildings constructed at the time (such as a monumental church in Joniškis) were dedicated to the Jubilee of the Birth of Jesus and Christianity Era and the importance of this year was also recorded in the inscriptions on private tombstones. It is obvious that people pondered and reflected on the turn of the century and were deliberately trying to leave messages for the future. The article intends to reveal the aspirations of our ancestors embodied in the tangible heritage with artistic features of the 1901 Jubilee in Lithuania. The abundance of personal memorabilia and, in particular, of public Lithuanian memorabilia of the Jubilee undoubtedly testifies that the year 1901 was particularly important in the process of securing the rights of the Lithuanian language and national consciousness. After all, the Lithuanian press ban was still in effect that year. The article raises a hypothesis that the cards of performed confessions, medals in churches and monuments in churchyards with inscriptions in Lithuanian not only resulted from the activities of brave clergymen and parishioners but could have also reflected the position of the church hierarchy, particularly in Samogitian Diocese.

Atrodytų, sakraliųjų Lietuvos statinių sienų dekoro (ypač XX a. II pusės) yra apsčiai, tačiau jis sparčiai mąžta. Polichrominė puošyba daug kur bažnyčiose išliko tik todėl, kad stokojama lėšų interjero atnaujinimui, kitaip tariant, yra didelė tikimybė, jog ją sunaikins būsimas konkrečios šventovės remontas, nes dabar po bažnyčios renovacijos dažniausiai nebelieka daugiaspalvių ornamentinių sienų ar lubų pagražų, siužetinių kompozicijų. Naikinimas šiuokart tikriausiai neturi kriminalinio turinio, nes paprastai prarandama šablonų ar menkavertė mėgėjiška sienų tapyba. Tačiau prieš likviduojant šią polichromiją derėtų labiau įsiklausyti į jos kalbą. Miglotą XX a. polichrominės puošybos visumos vaizdą turėtų prašviesinti Kultūros vertybių registras, nurodantis kas yra vertinga ir saugotina. Straipsnio tikslas – atkreipti dėmesį į Lietuvoje palyginti gerai išlikusio, bet sparčiai dingstančio XX a. bažnyčių vidaus polichrominio dekoro problemas: į jo ištirtumą, vertinimą ir išsaugojimo aktualiją šiandienos kontekste. Stengiamasi apibendrinti bažnyčių polichromijos modelius ir raidą XX a., parodyti, kaip į iš XIX šimtmečio atėjusią ir ilgai Lietuvoje užsibuvusią istorizmo terpę skverbėsi tautinės tapatybės ženklai. Bandoma atsekti, kokios estetinės nuostatos inspiravo XIX–XX a. slenksčio bažnyčių sienų polichromiją, koks buvo polichrominio dekoro pobūdis, kokie pagrindiniai elementai, mėginama nustatyti interjero dekoratorių naudotus pavyzdžius. It would seem that there is an abundance of wall decor among Lithuania’s sacred buildings (especially from the second half of the 20th century), but it is actually diminishing rapidly. In many churches, polychrome decoration has only survived because of a lack of funds for restoration of the interior; in other words, there is a good chance that it will be destroyed by future repairs of each concrete sanctuary, because multicolour ornamental wall or ceiling embellishments and scene compositions are now rarely left after church renovations. Destruction in this case probably does not have criminal content, because it is usually stencilled or amateur wall paintings of little value that are lost. However, prior to liquidating this polychromy, its language should be listened to more attentively. The obscure image of the whole of 20th century polychrome decoration should be clarified by the Cultural Heritage Register, which specifies what is of value and worthy of preservation. The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the problems of the relatively well-preserved, but rapidly disappearing interior polychrome decoration in 20th century churches in Lithuania: to its exploration, evaluation and urgent matters of preservation in today’s context. Efforts are made to summarize the models and development of church polychromy in the 20th century, and to show how signs of national identity penetrated this medium of historicism, which came from the 19th century and stayed in Lithuania so long. The article attempts to trace what aesthetic views inspired polychromy of church walls on the threshold of the 20th century, what the nature of polychrome decor was, and what its main elements were. It also tries to establish the examples used by interior decorators.

Dievo gailestingumo kultas ir malonėmis garsėjantis Gailestingojo Jėzaus paveikslas dar neįvesdinti į Lietuvos mokslinę istoriografiją. Tai pirmasis bandymas aptarti paveikslo ir kulto sklaidos pradžią Lietuvoje ir tarp lietuvių. Nagrinėjama Gailestingojo Jėzaus paveikslo ikonografija, jo kartotės ir perkūriniai. Pristatomos pirmosios Eugenijaus Kazimirowskio paveikslo kopijos įvairiose Lietuvos bažnyčiose. Aiškinamasi, kokios buvo garsiojo atvaizdo gerbimo ir Dievo gailestingumo kulto legitimavimo aplinkybės per pirmąjį paveikslo gyvavimo dešimtmetį. Aptariami XX a. 5 dešimtmetyje išleisti spaudiniai, propaguojantys paveikslą ir maldingumą Gailestingajam Jėzui. The Church of Lithuania announced 2011 the year of the Mercy of God. All over Lithuania believers were encouraged to become open to divine mercy and to show human mercy. 2011 was the year when the painting The Merciful Christ (Divine Mercy image) painted in 1934 by artist Eugeniusz Kazimirowski after the visions of St. Faustina and held in the Sanctuary of the Mercy of God in Vilnius made a pilgrimage across Lithuania and to the Lithuanian diasporas abroad. The journey of the famous image began in the Vilnius Cathedral with the consecration of the copies of the painting. These copies made their way to the most remote parishes and were solemnly received, worshipped and became sites for prayer. We can assert that upon the end of the festive year the image of The Merciful Christ found in the original painting became generally established in Lithuania. Incidentally, due to active propaganda another image of The Merciful Christ, created in the years of World War II by Adolf Hyla and called Krakowian, gained spread in this country and in all Catholic countries. It should be noted that the way of Kazimirowski’s painting to Lithuanian believers was uneven and full of interruptions. The following stages of the cult of The Merciful Christ in Lithuania can conventionally be distinguished: non-public (first years of existence of the painting), upsurge (the 1940s, i. e. years under Soviet and Nazi occupations), subsiding (years of Soviet stagnation), revival (the 1980s, i. e. first decade of independent Lithuania), and thriving (current period). The contribution of Lithuanian historians and scholars of religious and art studies to the research of the cult of the Mercy of God and the painting famous for its graces is rather modest. The majority of publications repeat the data of research by Polish scholars, in particular Rev. Henryk Ciereszko, a biographer of Rev. Michał Sopoćko. The current paper is the first attempt to discuss the beginning of the spread of the painting itself and its cult in Lithuania and among Lithuanians. The iconography of the painting The Merciful Christ, its copies and remakes are analyzed in this paper. The first copies of Kazimirowski’s painting held in various churches of Lithuania (Karkaziškė, Kretinga, Vadžgirys, Vaiguva, Vilnius, and elsewhere) show that the Vilnius image enjoyed popularity in the first half of the 1940s, a dramatic decade for Lithuania. Quite often these copies, like the original, had to endure a nomadic fate in a later period. The authoress of the paper aims to establish the circumstances of worship of the famous image and legitimization of the cult of the Mercy of God in the first decade of existence of the painting. The first publications popularizing the painting and the piety to the Merciful Christ that came out in Lithuania are discussed in this paper, namely small booklets containing the famous image, its description, and the crown and novena of Mercy published in Vilnius and Kaunas in 1940–1942. These publications appeared both in Polish and Lithuanian languages. The booklets published in Lithuanian went through several editions. A closer look suggests that there might have been some counterfeits among them. The intensity of the new cult is also revealed by the devotional pictures that became widespread in the years of World War II, which are also discussed in the paper.

Europa XIX amžiuje ir pirmoje XX a. I pusėje paženklinta virtine Švč. Mergelės apsireiškimų. Daugelį jų siejo Nekaltojo Prasidėjimo slėpinio gija. Bažnyčios pripažintieji apsireiškimai sulaukė atgarsio Lietuvoje, tačiau itin nevienodo. XIX a. II pusėje – XX a. I pusėje iš Prancūzijos, Lenkijos, Belgijos, Portugalijos ar Italijos, Vokietijos mūsų kraštą pasiekė devocionalijos, vaizduojančios minėtose vietovėse patirtus regėjimus, formuojančios apsireiškimus identifikuojančią Švč. Mergelės Marijos ikonografiją. Tik regėjimus iliustruojančių devocinių atvaizdų srautai labai skyrėsi. Taip pat nevienodas ir apsireiškimus nušviečiančių rašinių kiekis ir apimtys. Be abejonės, Lietuvoje kaip ir visame pasaulyje, garsiausiai sklido žinios apie įvykius mažame Pietų Prancūzijos miestelyje Lurde, ir jų refleksija buvo pati stipriausia. Spausdintas žodis buvo svarbus veiksnys formuojantis ir skleidžiantis lurdiškės Švč. Mergelės Marijos kultui. Lietuviai neretai prancūzišką „medžiagą“ perimdavo iš vokiečių ir lenkų autorių, pasinaudojusių prancūzų leidiniais. Straipsnyje pristatomi Švč. Lithuania had a number of revelations of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many of them were related by the mystery of the Immaculate Conception. The revelations recognised by the Church had repercussions in Lithuania, yet to a different extent. In the second half of the 19th c. – the first half of the 20th c. the country was reached by devotional objects from France, Poland, Belgium, Portugal or Italy and Germany, which depicted the visions experienced in the above mentioned localities and formed the iconography of the Blessed Virgin Mary which identified revelations. However, the flows of devotional images illustrating the visions greatly differed. The number and volume of writings covering revelations also differ. Certainly in Lithuania, like all over the world, the news about the events in a small town in Southern France, Lourdes, spread profusely and its reflection was strongest. A printed word was an important factor for the formation and spread of the cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes. Lithuanians would often take over French “material” from German or Polish authors who had used French publications. The paper presents the repercussions of the revelations of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes (1858) in Lithuania. The author discusses the literature and devotional objects of the second half of the 19th c. – the first half of the 20th c. dedicated to the events in Lourdes; attempts to trace how the cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes formed. The aim of the article is to discuss how this image of the Blessed Virgin Mary was brought to Lithuania, spread here and became one of the most popular images.

Straipsnio tikslas: aptarti, kaip įtakingas tarpukario veikėjas, Karo muziejaus vadovas generolas Vladas Nagevičius realizavo šį kryžių Lietuvos įvaizdį prestižinėje Kauno vietoje – Karo muziejaus sodelyje ir sukūrė ten svarbiausią tarpukariu tautos atminties įamžinimo ir budinimo erdvę. Stengiamasi išsiaiškinti sodelyje iškilusių liaudies mažosios architektūros paminklų kilmę, skaičių, ypatybes, meistrus ir aukotojus bei kryžių statybos intencijas. In the late 19th – early 20th century, the landscape of Lithuania was densely scattered with crosses. In artistic works, this element of landscape became a metaphor conveying the dramatic past of the country, a difficult political situation and romantic hope. A large variety of shapes of crosses revealed the origins of creativity of the Lithuanian nation. Thus, the image of The Lithuania of Crosses was given a general status; it was boasted as exceptional and represented the state at international exhibitions. In the interwar period, a symbolic image of The Lithuania of Crosses was materialized in the most prestigious square of Kaunas – the garden of the War Museum. Crosses to those who perished for the freedom of Lithuania were erected on both sides of the monument in 1922/3–38. Traditional crosses were brought from various locations, acquired by the Exhibition of Agriculture and Industry, and carved after drafts made by students of the Kaunas Art School in 1928. Various monuments of architecture of small forms were built – 9 crosses, 2 roofed pillar-type crosses, one roadside pillar-type chapel, one krikštas (a wooden burial marker typical of Lithuania Minor) and one small chapel, revealing a panorama of objects of cross-crafting in all regions of Lithuania. The main preconditions for the appearance of crosses in the museum garden should be pointed out: representation of ethnic regions and the diversity of artistic forms, and commemoration of important events. Besides, these crosses were a kind of cenotaphs, as they symbolized the homelands of those who perished for Independence. The monument to the perished and the crosses that stood beside were regarded as a pantheon of the Lithuanian nation. Thanks to the museum director Vladas Nagevičius. who constantly fostered the ceremonies and memorial rites held at the monument, this place became the major symbol of commemorating society’s memory. Because of such significance, attempts were made to repeat both the monument and the crosses in other locations of Lithuania and in Lithuanian exile. On the other hand, a practical model of nurturing the traditions of cross-crafting was built on the initiative of Nagevičius and artist Adomas Varnas, which still lives on: crosses created after artists’ projects and dedicated to certain regions of Lithuania were built in the museum garden. In 1949, all crosses were pulled down. At present, copies of the majority of crosses and other monuments formerly found in the garden have been restored, and the museum garden became a site for various events again; however, its former aura and significance have been irredeemably lost.

Monografijoje nagrinėjami tam tikri valstybės ir Bažnyčios santykiai (įstatyminė bazė, materialinė parama) ir socialiniai visuomenės pokyčiai, turėję įtakos bažnyčių dailei. Aptariama to laikotarpio Bažnyčios pozicija, nuostatos sakralinės dailės atžvilgiu. Nurodomos priežastys, kodėl ir kokio pobūdžio vaizduojamosios dailės kūrinių anuomet daugiausiai pateko į bažnyčias. Atskleidžiama, kaip religinis gyvenimas ir tautinės aspiracijos paveikė bažnyčių dailės ikonografiją, aiškinamasi, kokiais pirmavaizdžiais naudojosi Lietuvos dailininkai. In the first half of the 20th century Lithuania experienced several dramatic events: the loss of independence, and two World Wars. Nevertheless, it was also the period reinforcing the existence of Lithuanian nation, when vision of the independent state matured and was realized. Lithuanian National Revival can not be isolated from religious revival experienced at the same time. [...] While writing the first study on the Lithuanian Church art of the first half of the 20th century, the author tried to answer questions, why and of what kind of visual art works were incorporated into church space. Author preferred to analyse not stylistic changes or art processes (publications on such fields already exist), but first of all essential factors which influenced this kind of art. Therefore, focuses of the book were: 1. to characterize influence of the government on the Catholic Church art; 2. to outline regulations of the Church and influence of the Holy See on the religious art; 3. to reveal directives on Church art in Lithuanian Ecclesiastical Province and attitude of Lithuanian Church hierarchy to Catholic art; 4. to demonstrate, how iconography of religious art was affected by changes of piety traditions, new cults, activity of religious organizations and national aspirations; 5. to assess the most popular subjects of visual art in Lithuanian churches and to find prototypes used by artists. Chronology of the research embraces period from the last decade of the 19th century to the Soviet annexation in 1940. This was determined by development of church construction, its equipment and decoration and by consistent patterns of religious art. Lithuanian identity of Catholic community, intertwining of national and religious aspirations and impact of the state are especially important for this study, therefore, the main attention was paid to Lithuanian Ecclesiastical Province, and to the church decoration within borders of the Republic of Lithuania. Thus, the situation in the Diocese of Vilnius was analyzed only until the World War I. [...]

1924 m. Šiluvoje buvo pastatyta nauja šventovė – Apsireiškimo koplyčia (projektuota Antano Vivulskio), tačiau jos neformalus statusas buvo išskirtinis, ir savo svarba ji prilygo naujoms vyskupijų katedroms, kurias imta statyti ar įrenginėti po to, kai 1926 m. įkurta Lietuvos bažnytinė provincija. Apsireiškimo koplyčia – didinga modernios architektūros šventovė. Tačiau šis vienas iškiliausių XX a. pirmosios pusės sakralinės architektūros statinių Lietuvoje nesulaukė jos išskirtinį statusą ir meninį pavidalą atitinkančios vidaus įrangos ir puošybos. Koplyčios statytojai ir administratoriai nuolat tvirtino, kad tvarkydami koplyčios interjerą seksią architekto A. Vivulskio paliktu projektu. Tačiau jis iki 1940-ųjų metų buvo įgyvendintas tik menka dalimi, selektyviai. 1925–1926 m. Apsireiškimo koplyčioje atsiradusios altoriaus ir fasado Dievo Motinos su Kūdikiu skulptūros tebėra svarbiausi vaizdiniai ženklai, rodantys, kad koplyčia yra Marijos šventovė. Koplyčios fasado bareljefą, artimą liaudies stilistikai, 1925 m. sukūrė vietos meistras Kazys Rosenas. Jono Mrozinskio drožta skulptūrinė altoriaus kompozicija nėra meniškai brandus kūrinys, tai – tipiškas, be unikalumo žymės to laiko bažnytinių reikmenų dirbtuvių dirbinys. Galbūt todėl lig šiol neturime su Apsireiškimo stebuklu Šiluvoje identifikuojamo vaizdinio. The Chapel of Šiluva, completed in 1924, is a majestic shrine of modern architecture raised in the most important pilgrim centre of Lithuania in the first half of the 20th century. This publication constitutes an attempt to deduce the development of the interior decoration of the Šiluva Chapel in the interwar period and to ascertain whether the equipment and decoration of the Chapel interior matched its expressive architecture and exceptional status. The paper outlines whether and how much the parish-priests of Šiluva, Marcijonas Jurgaitis and Paulius Katela, who led the decoration work, succeeded to realize the project of the architect and sculptor Antanas Vivulskis. A discussion is carried out of the sculpture work performed in the Chapel in 1925-1926 when the major visual signs, the altar and facade sculptures of the Mother of God with the Child, indicating that the Chapel is the shrine of the Mary's Apparition were designed. The study introduces the authors of the sculptures Jonas Mrozinskis and Kazys Rosenas. It also makes attempts to find out whether there was an established image of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šiluva. The paper reveals efforts by the priest P. Katela (1929-1939) to decorate the Chapel and the search for artists that was conducted and identifies the anticipated decoration programme. Reasons are specified why the planned work of Chapel decoration remained unrealized and the attitude of the leadership of the Kaunas Archdiocese towards the issues under discussion is clarified.

Pavasarininkai – viena gausiausių katalikiškų organizacijų, tarpukariu turėjusi savo skyrius – kuopas, kuopeles – atokiausiose Lietuvos vietose. Savo veiklos pradžia pavasarininkai laikė 1912 metus. Tada pradėtas leisti jaunimui skirtas laikraštis „Pavasaris“, tapęs slaptai veikusių jaunimo kuopelių jungtimi ir davęs pavadinimą būsimai organizacijai. XX a. trečiajame-ketvirtajame dešimtmečiais ši jaunimo organizacija buvo viena svarbiausių liaudiškos memorialistikos sklaidoje: ji pastatė itin daug paminklų. Jų visuma atspindi bendrą pirmosios Nepriklausomybės laikotarpio memorialistikos situaciją. Nemenka tų paminklų dalis – tipiški ano meto kryždirbystės objektai. Kita vertus, pavasarininkų kryžiai turėjo ir savitų bruožų, praturtino memorialinių liaudies statinių ikonografiją. Daugelis „Pavasario“ kuopų pastatytų kryždirbystės objektų paženklinti reljefine organizacijos emblema ir tautiniu simboliu – Gedimino stulpais. Paminkluose neretai vaizduoti Kristaus kančios įrankiai, Mišių taurė su ostija, Jėzaus monograma, Jėzaus ar Marijos bareljefai, Apokalipsės avinėlis, gulintis ant knygos su septyniais antspaudais, sparnuotos angeliukų galvutės, klūpančių ir besimeldžiančių angelų figūrėlės. Be to, kryžius lydėjo platoki įrašai. O visa tai kartu buvo komponuojama į įvairiausias formas, struktūras ir padabinama begale ornamentinių puošmenų. Šio straipsnio tikslas – aptarti pavasarininkų pastatytus kryžius, jų kontekstą ir pamėginti užčiuopti kryždirbystės tradicijos pulsavimą minėtu laikotarpiu, mėginama išryškinti pavasarininkų darbuotės reikšmę kryždirbystės raidai. “Pavasarininkai” was one of the largest Catholic organisations which had its branches – groups and cells – in the most remote places across Lithuania during the interwar period. “Pavasarininkai” considered that their organisation became active in 1912. The newspaper “Pavasaris” [Spring] for young people was then first published. It became a link of secretly operating youth cells and gave its name to the future organisation. In 1920s–30s, this youth organisation was one of the key organisation disseminating folk memorials: it built a considerable number of memorials. They all reflect a general situation of memorials in the first Independence period. A number of those memorials are typical objects of the then cross-making. On the other hand, “Pavasarininkai” crosses had distinctive features and enriched the iconography of memorial folk structures. Many objects of cross-making that were built by “Pavasaris” groups bear a raised emblem of the organisation and a national symbol – the Columns of Gediminas. Memorials often display the weapons of the Agony of Christ, the Mass Cup with a wafer, a Jesus monogram, bas-reliefs of Jesus or Mary, the Apocalyptic Lamb lying on a book with seven seals, winged angel heads and figurines of kneeling and praying angels. Moreover, crosses had rather wide inscriptions. All this together was arranged into various forms and structures, and decorated with numerous ornaments. This article aims to discuss crosses built by “Pavasarininkai” and their context, to try to feel the pulse of the cross-making tradition during the period concerned and to highlight the significance of “Pavasarininkai” activities to the development of cross-making.

XX a. I pusėje Lietuvoje spauda tapo visuotine. Spaudos sraute informacijai apie šventųjų relikvijas teko mažai vietos, o esanti informacija persmelkta stebuklo nuojauta. Be įprasto stebuklo šleifo, senąsias šventųjų relikvijas XX a. lydėjo ir archeologinė konotacija. Relikvijos spaudoje susilaukė dvejopo vertinimo: relikvijų, kaip pajamų šaltinio, aspektas stipriai kritikuotas nekatalikiškoje spaudoje; tuo tarpu Katalikų Bažnyčios oficiali spauda gynė šventųjų relikvijų garbinimą. Straipsnyje pažymima, jog Lietuvoje daugelį amžių labai gerbtos šv. Kryžiaus relikvijos. XX a. 4 dešimtmetyje, įsibėgėjus ir gausiai aprašomai naujai lietuvių piligrimystės bangai, Lietuvos bažnyčias greitai pasiekdavo ir naujai kanonizuotųjų relikvijos (Bernadetos Subiru, Jono Bosko ir kt.). Taip pat plito (populiarintos, reklamuotos spaudoje, įvairiai platintos ir kt.) relikvijos, turėjusios devocionalijų statusą – devociniai paveikslėliai su Prisikėlusio Kristaus, Kūdikėlio Jėzaus atvaizdais ir t.t. Aptariamuoju laikotarpiu lietuviams lankant šventųjų palaikus patriotinės intencijos buvo ne mažiau svarbios nei religingumo stiprinimas. Nuo pat XX a. pradžios spaudoje pasirodydavo pasvarstymai, raginimai, priekaištai: kodėl Lietuva teturi vieną šventąjį – šv. Kazimierą? Greta būdavo pateikiamos kandidatūros į „naujuosius Lietuvos šventuosius“, renkami, kaupiami ir skelbiami jų galimo šventumo įrodymai. Daugiausia skelbta, diskutuota dėl dviejų kandidatūrų – Barboros Žagariškės bei arkivyskupo Jurgio Matulaičio, kurio kultas ypač sustiprėjo 1934 m. ir netrukus kai kur jis jau laikytas šventuoju. The Lithuanian press of the early 20th century addressed to the issue of the Holy Relics quite rarely. The matter of museum appeared alongside the common text of the miracle in the discussions of the relics in the press of the start of the 20th century. The awkward issue of a relic as a source of revenue has been substantially criticised in the libertine press. The Catholic periodicals reveal that Lithuania has a viable tradition of worshiping the relics of the Holy Cross. In the thirties the relics of the newly sainted started reaching Lithuanian churches within a relatively short period. The times are also characterised by popularity of the relics-devotionalia. The process was initiated by a new wave of pilgrimage after proclamation of independence. The press announced journeys of Lithuanian pilgrims to the Holy Land and resting places of the well-liked saints. Attending of sacred remains for Lithuanians was no less than a patriotic act, which was consolidation of religiosity. Religious and national revivals were seen as identical. As in the interwar period the sanctuary of St.Casimir in Vilnius was inaccessible to the population of Lithuania, new candidacies to the saintly glory were considered. A certain discontent was expressed as concerns incapacity of Lithuanians to initiate processes of beatification. The promoters of the cult of Matulaitis (Maryans) were constantly informing the press about the miracles that they experienced through the grace of his. “Lithuanian is awaiting a new saint” – claimed the press, uttering hereby the expectations of the Lithuanian society of the early 20th century.

Straipsnyje pristatoma įvairialypė Juozapo Stankevičiaus (1866-1958) – kunigo, filosofijos mokslų daktaro, draudžiamosios spaudos bendradarbio, varpininko, knygnešio, leidėjo ir redaktoriaus, pedagogo, poligloto, bibliofilo, numizmato, dailės mylėtojo bei kolekcininko veikla. Atskleidžiama jo prisiimtoji ir įgyvendinta misija: būti lietuvių kultūros ir politinio gyvenimo telkėju, aktyvintoju bei lituanistikos sergėtoju. Dabar mažai kas žino, kad itin kuklus ir tolerantiškas kun. J. Stankevičius buvo išrinktas į Tautos tarybą, bet lietuvių vienybės vardan savanoriškai atsisakė tapti Lietuvos valstybės signataru. Per du pasaulinius karus ir ilgametes okupacijas jis sugebėjo Vilniuje sukaupti ir išsaugoti vertingus dailės ir knygų rinkinius. Ypač vertingą senosios lituanikos biblioteką jis padovanojo Lietuvių kalbos ir literatūros institutui. The article presents multifaceted activities of Juozapas Stankevičius (1866-1958) as a priest, doctor of philosophy, contributor to the banned press, ringer, book distributor, publisher and editor, pedagogue, polyglot, bibliophile, numismatist, art lover and collector. His mission, which he had assumed and succeeded to implement, is being revealed in the article. He wanted to be a promoter and fosterer of the Lithuanian culture and political life. He also was a guard of Lithuanian studies. Few people know that a modest and tolerant priest Juozapas Stankevičius was elected to the national Council and that he refused to be a signatory of the state of Lithuania in the name of the unity of Lithuanians. He managed to collect and preserve valuable art and literature books during the both wars and the period of occupation. He donated his collection of books of the old Lithuanian studies to the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature.

Pamaldumas Švč. Jėzaus Širdžiai jau daugiau nei trys šimtmečiai yra labai svarbi Katalikų bažnyčios savastis, kuri paveikė giluminius tikėjimo procesus, suteikė galimybę naujai suvokti Išganytoją, praturtino liturgiją ir maldingumo tradicijas. Svarbiausiais Švč. Širdies kulto diegėjais Bažnyčios istorikai susidomėjo jau XIX a., o bendra kulto istorija imta nagrinėti XX a. pradžioje. Tačiau šio reiškinio sklaida atskirose šalyse dar nedaug ištirta. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama Švč. Jėzaus Širdies kulto raiška Užnemunėje ir bažnyčių dailėje. Pirmoji Švč. Jėzaus Širdies brolija LDK buvo įsteigta Vilniaus vizičių vienuolyne. Pamaldumas Švč. Širdžiai Lietuvoje išplito po to, kai Abiejų Tautų valstybės karaliaus Augusto III ir visų šalies vyskupų prašymu popiežius Klemensas XIII 1765 m. Lenkijos ir LDK vyskupijose leido švęsti Švč. Jėzaus Širdies šventę su Šv. Mišiomis ir oficiumą. Po šventės valstybėje įvedimo Švč. Jėzaus Širdies brolijų daugėjo ir Vilniaus, ir Žemaičių vyskupijose. Klemenso XIII 1765 m. leidime nurodyta malda prie Švč. Jėzaus Širdies paveikslo ir brolijų veikla skatino kurti Švč. Jėzaus Širdies atvaizdus. Švč. Širdies kulto pradžia Užnemunėje susijusi su jėzuitų vienuolija, jos emblema buvo komponuojama altoriuose, sakyklose. XIX a. II pusėje Švč. Jėzaus Širdies kultą ypač aktyviai skleidė jėzuitai, įvairios katalikų organizacijos, populiarino katalikiškoji spauda. Masiškai paplito Jėzaus Širdies atvaizdai (tą skatino ir intronizacijos aktas, privalėjęs vykti prie Švč. Jėzaus Širdies atvaizdo). Ši tema pamažu įsitvirtino ir liaudies dailėje. Piety towards the Holy Heart of Jesus, for more than three hundred years, is a very important feature of the Catholic church that has influenced deep-seated faith processes, presented an opportunity to understand the Savior in a new way. Church historians became interested in main promoters of Holy Heart cult already in XIX c., whereas general history of the cult came to be researched in the beginning of XX c. However, there was no research carried out on how widespread is this phenomenon in individual countries. In this article, the author analyzes manifestation of Holy Heart cult in Užnemunė region and church art. The first brotherhood of the Holy Heart of Jesus in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) was established in Vilnius Vizičiai monastery. Piety towards the Holy Heart became widespread in Lithuania after the king of Lithuanian and Polish Commonwealth – August III – and, on the request from all bishops in the country, Pope Clemens XIII in 1765 allowed to celebrate in Polish and GDL dioceses festival of the Holy Heart of Jesus together with Holy Mass and officium. After the introduction of the festival, the number of the Holy Heart of Jesus brotherhoods grew in both Vilnius and Žemaičiai dioceses. Clemens XIII 1765 permission indicated a prayer next to the Holy Heart of Jesus painting and encouraged brotherhoods to create images of the Holy Heart of Jesus. The beginning of the Holy Heart cult in Užnemunė region is connected to Jesuit monastery, its insignia was incorporated into altars, pulpits. In the second half of XIX c., the Holy Heart of Jesus cult was especially actively promoted by Jesuits, various Catholic organizations, Catholic press.

XX a. I pusės siužetinė dailė Lietuvos bažnyčiose ganėtinai inertiška, tradicinė. Kopijavimas liko svarbiausiu jos šaltiniu, todėl bažnyčiose vyravo kopijos ir sekiniai. Aptariamuoju laikotarpiu buvo daug tam tikrų atvaizdų populiarumo priežasčių: itin aktyvi religinė propaganda, kurios epicentras – Šv. Apaštalų Sostas, Marijos ar šventųjų atvaizdus lydinti stebuklų aura, bažnyčioms suteikiami atlaidai, taip pat bažnytinės šventės bei jubiliejai, vienuolijų ir religinių organizacijų veikla, šventųjų garbinimo tradicija ir nacionalinis jų reikšmingumas bei patronažas. Ikonografinių siužetų vizualizacijos pavidalą mūsų bažnyčiose lėmė religinių atvaizdų pasiūla, kuri ne tik atitiko paklausą, bet ir pati iš dalies ją formavo. Dėl sparčiai gerėjančių techninių spaudos galimybių pasaulyje atsirado masinių reprodukcijų industrija, kurioje bene reikšmingiausia vieta teko devociniams atvaizdams. Tie patys didelio tiražo devociniai paveikslėliai, skulptūros buvo tiek profesionalių dailininkų, tiek dirbtuvių meistrų kopijuojami pirmavaizdžiai. Pastaraisiais dažniausiai būdavo pasirenkami „nuosaikūs“ istorizuoti XIX-XX a. per. dailininkų kūriniai arba itin garsūs senųjų meistrų paveikslai, kur kas rečiau – skulptūros. Bažnyčiose vyravo kūrybiškai neinterpretuotos Raphaelio, Partolome Estebano Murillo, Guido Reni, Tiziano arba XIX a. – XX a. per. dailininkų, neretai – nazarėnų pasekėjų, kopijos. Scenic paintings of the first half of XX c. in Lithuanian churches are rather inert, traditional. Copying remained the main source of such paintings, which led to the predominance of copies and imitations in churches. During the discussed period, some paintings were popular for numerous reasons: very active religious propaganda, coming from Holy See, aura of magic accompanying the images of Mary or saints, indulgences given to churches, also, church festivals and anniversaries, activities of monasteries and religious organizations, the tradition of saint worship and their national significance, patronage. Visual expression of iconographic plots in our churches was determined by the supply of religious images, which not only balanced the demand, but also partly shaped it. Due to rapidly improving technical possibilities of the publishing industry, worldwide, there started to emerge an industry of mass reproductions, whose most important product was devotional images. These devotional images, printed in large numbers, as well as paintings, sculptures were prototypes copied by both – professional painters and workshop artisans. The latter usually chose “moderate”, historicized works of XIX-XX c. painters or widely acclaimed paintings by the Old Masters, much more rarely did they choose sculptures. In churches, there predominated artistically uninterpreted copies of Raphael, Partolome Estebano Murillo, Guido Reni, Tiziano or painters of XIX c. – XX c., frequently, the works of the followers of Nazareth natives.

Disertacijoje stengiamasi apibūdinti svarbiausius veiksnius, reglamentavusius, o kartais net nulėmusius XX a. I pusės bažnyčių dailę; nusakyti priežastis, kodėl ir kokio pobūdžio vaizduojamosios dailės kūrinių daugiausiai pateko į bažnyčių erdvę. Nagrinėjamos tam tikros valstybės ir Bažnyčios sambūvio apraiškos (įstatyminė reglamentacinė bazė), lietuvių tautinio ir religinio atgijimo sąveika, socialiniai pokyčiai visuomenėje, meninės stilistikos raida. Nusakoma, kaip bažnyčių dailę sankcionavo, reglamentavo civilinė valdžia ir ypač dvasinė vyresnybė, išaiškinta valstybės parama bažnyčių statybai ir puošybai XX a. I pusėje. Aptariama Vatikano ir Bažnyčios hierarchų pozicija, svarbiausios taisyklės, taikytos bažnytinei dailei. Tyrinėjama Lietuvos episkopato opinija bažnytinės dailės atžvilgiu, Lietuvos bažnytinės provincijos vyskupijų sinodų nuostatai. Išryškinamas ryšys tarp XIX a. pab. – XX a. I pusės Šv. Sosto ideologinės programos ir jos pagrindinių vykdytojų – religinių organizacijų, tarp religingumo pobūdžio, platintų kultų ir vaizduojamosios dailės bažnyčiose. Stengiamasi atskleisti pagrindinės XX a. I pusės bažnytinio meno intencijas. Parodoma, kaip pamaldumo tradicijų pokyčiai ir tautinės aspiracijos paveikė bažnyčių dailės ikonografiją. Analizuojamas ikonografinių tipų paplitimas Lietuvos bažnyčiose XX a. I pusėje, tyrinėjama Jėzaus ir Švč. Mergelės Marijos garbinimo meninė išraiška bei tuomet populiarių šventųjų atvaizdai bažnyčiose. Nustatyti populiariausi vaizduojamosios dailės siužetai Lietuvos bažnyčiose bei pamėgti ikonografiniai provaizdžiai. The thesis characterises main factors, which regulated, and even determined church art of the first half of the 20th century; defines reasons and the kind of works of fine art that got into the space of churches. Certain manifestations of coexistence of the state and the church, interaction between the national and religious rebirth of the Lithuanians, social changes in society and the development of art stylistics are investigated. It is defined how church art was sanctioned, regulated by civil and spiritual authorities, the state aid to building and decorating churches in the first half of the 20th century is elucidated. The position of the dignitaries of the Vatican and the Church, main rules applied to church art are discussed. The opinion of the episcopate of Lithuania about church art, regulations of the synods of dioceses of the Lithuanian church province are investigated. The relation between the ideological programme and religious organisations of the Holy See at the end of the 19th –the first half of the 20 century, between the nature of religiousness, the disseminated cults and fine art in churches are elucidated. Attempts were made to reveal main intentions of church art in the first half of the 20th century. It is shown how changes in piety traditions and national aspirations affected iconography of church art. The spread of iconographic types in Lithuanian churches in the first half of the 20th century is analysed, artistic expression of worshipping Jesus and the Virgin Mary, as well as images of the saints popular in churches at that time are analysed. The most popular plots of fine art in Lithuanian churches and favourite iconographic prototypes are established.

Dailės kūrinių bažnyčiose paskirtis ir esmė – būti liturgikos akompanimentu, apeigų sutaurinimo priemone, meniškai išskiriant liturginio veiksmo vietą ir primenant žmogui Kūrėjo teikiamas malones. Bažnyčių dailė – tai Bažnyčios determinuota autonominė sritis. XIX a. pab.-XX a. pr. dėl savo autonomiškumo ji pergyveno didelę krizę, ir pirmąkart katalikybės istorijoje Bažnyčia ir meno pasaulis šitaip stipriai atitrūko vienas nuo kito. Tada atsiskyrė moderni tuometinė dailė (taip pat ir tradicine religine tematika) ir dailė, patenkanti į bažnyčią. Bažnytinio meno turinį ir pavidalą reglamentavo Bažnyčios kanonai, veikė aptariamojo laikotarpio Bažnyčios ideologija bei dvasinės vyresnybės nuostatos. Visa tai ir aptariama šiame straipsnyje, tikintis užčiuopti priežasties giją, padėsiančią narplioti XIX a. pab.-XX a. I pusės Lietuvos bažnyčių dailės problemas. Straipsnyje siekiama nusakyti svarbiausias taisykles, taikytas bažnytinei dailei (kanonų nuostatas, Apaštališkojo Sosto kongregacijų nuorodas ir kt.). Aptariant nagrinėjamo laikotarpio Bažnyčios hierarchų pažiūras dėl kultinio meno, atsižvelgta į tuometinės Bažnyčios ideologijos aktualijas ir remtasi įtakingų vokiečių dvasininkų nuomone apie naują religinį meną, dariusia įtaką Lietuvos dvasininkijai. The article aims at describing the main standards applied to religious art in the period under discussion. The canons of the new Codex juris canonici, which was promulgated in 1917, actually entrusted the care of religious art to diocesan ordinaries. In the first half of the 20th century, the Roman congregations frequently treated the decrees of the Council of Trent as the canons of religious art. The topical matters of religious life were reflected in the norms of the Congregation of the Holy Office and the Congregation of Rites. The requirement to come back to historical tradition, which was among the most important requirements for religious art in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, was based theologically. It was associated with Neothomism, the official Church's philosophy, and with the essential aim of the Holy See in the early 20th century to revitalize the internal life of the Church and to strengthen the Christian spirit. For this purpose, the matters of special concern included liturgy, the purity of liturgical practice as well as religious art. In their celebration of historical Christian art, the spiritual authorities simultaneously protected the historicizing art. Despite the fact that the first half of the 20th century saw a wide spread of the Catholic liturgical renovation movement which was supported or initiated by the popes, and notwithstanding the issuing by the Roman Curia of important documents dedicated to religious art and the intentions of Church representatives to restore religious art from the state of stagnation, religious art constituted a small portion of the Church's interests and was on the margins of the broad range of Church's activities in the period under review. Though spiritual authorities in Western Europe (as well as in Lithuania) spoke against the standardized, industrial form of religious art, churches abounded in stereotyped objects of art. They fulfilled the function of a religious work, because they were clear signs that could be easily perceived by the faithful. On the other hand, the unified production of art in churches, to paraphrase Pius XI, neither violated the sanctity of altars nor had a negative impact on piety of the faithful nor profaned the sacred values as some pieces of modern Christian art do.

XX a. I pusėje visuose katalikiškuose kraštuose išpopuliarėjo Jėzaus – Gerojo Ganytojo, Švč. Jėzaus Širdies, Kristaus Karaliaus, Jėzaus tarp vaikų ikonografiniai tipai. Išganytojo meilę žmonėms įkūnijantys atvaizdai lyg ir nustelbė Jėzaus kančią perteikiančius siužetus (išimtis – Nukryžiuotojo atvaizdai). XIX a. pabaigoje – XX a. I pusėje bažnytinėje, ir ypač sepulkralinėje, dailėje buvo dažnas Jėzaus, nešančio kryžių, motyvas, tačiau jį pranoko ilgainiui itin pamėgtas Jėzaus maldos Alyvų kalne siužetas. Ši Jėzaus kančių kontempliacijai skirta tema, tapusi savotišku sentimentalumo, trivialumo sinonimu katalikiškoje dailėje, buvo labai patraukli tikintiesiems tiek Lietuvoje, tiek kitur. Svarbiausia minėtos temos kūrinių paplitimo priežastis buvo ta, kad XX a. tikintieji juose regėjo jiems labai artimą ir suprantamą Išganytojo pavidalą. E. K. Liškos, P. Delaroche, H. Hofmanno ir kitų mažai žinomų dailininkų paveikslų kopijos, patekusios į maldos ar privačius namus, skatino žmonių religingumą, žadino jų meilę Atpirkėjui. Stipriai unifikuoti Jėzaus maldai Alyvų kalne skirti atvaizdai, kuriais buvo primenama dėl žmonijos išganymo, Atpirkėjo prisiimtoji pasija, simbolizavo Jėzaus žmogiškumą ir gerumą. Šio siužeto kūriniai atitiko bažnytinei dailei keltą istorinės tradicijos laikymosi reikalavimą ir pagrindinę XX a. I pusės bažnytinio meno intenciją – diegti Viešpaties gailestingumo ir meilės idėją. Straipsnyje aptariami populiariausi XX a. I pusės Jėzaus ikonografiniai tipai bei Šv. Late in the 19th - first half of the 20th century all pictures representing the kindness and love of the Saviour to mankind became widely spread in the churches of all Catholic states and overshadowed the subjects pertaining to his Passion. The reason was a new social policy of the Church renewal program implemented by the Holy See. One of the ways to express this ideology and also the main form of devotion was the cult of the Holiest Heart of Jesus. Therefore the Holiest Heart of Jesus became the central theme of religious art in the 20th century. A special impetus for pictures and sculptures of this kind to appear in every church of Lithuania was given by the intronization acts of parishes, religious organizations and even of the country (1934), as well as the 1933-1935 jubilee of the church. A significant part of the images devoted to the Heart of Jesus or other related that got into the churches were not the original artistic creations. Most often they were copies or paraphrases of oleographs widely spread in the Catholic worlds or reproductions of other kinds of religious pictures. It is this production that most strongly influenced the form of devotion visualization in the first half of the 20th century. Since 1925, when Pope Pius XI announced the encyclical "Quas primas" in which the rights of Christ's reign were theologically substantiated and the holy day of Christ the King was introduced as a holyday of all Catholic organizations, the images of Christ the King began spreading in the churches. This subject reflects the then urgent problems of the Church: fight against laicism on the one hand and the successful expansion of Catholic missions throughout the continents on the other.

Šiame straipsnyje pirmą kartą pabandyta Lietuvos dailėtyroje ieškoti XX a. pirmosios pusės bažnyčių dailės teologinės šaknies, aptarti maldingumo pobūdžio poveikį bažnytinei ikonografijai. XIX a. antroje pusėje prasidėjo, tačiau XX a. bažnytinėje dailėje visuotinai paplito perėjimas nuo kančią ir skausmą išreiškiančių siužetų prie simbolizuojančių meilę - giliausią tikėjimo prasmę. Tiek nauji ikonografiniai tipai, tiek aktualizuoti senieji įkūnijo Viešpaties gerumą, gailestingumą ir malones. Kaip ir seniau, dažniausiai buvo įsigyjama Jėzaus ir Marijos atvaizdų, tačiau vis daugėjo naujų, stebuklais garsėjusių paveikslų kopijų. Šie atvaizdai ne tik skatino pamaldumą, stiprino tikėjimą, bet jų plitimas atskleidė hedonistinės, vartotojiškos visuomenės formavimąsi. Marijos garbinimas XX a. pirmojoje pusėje įgijo naujų prasmių ir laikytinas pamaldumo šerdimi. Jis prilygo, o kartais net pranokdavo Jėzaus adoraciją. Iš naujai kanonizuotų moterų, Lietuvoje labiausiai garbinta 1925 m. kanonizuota šv. Kūdikėlio Jėzaus Teresė, kurios vienintelės susiformavo kultas. Aptariamuoju laikotarpiu buvo populiarūs ir Jono Boskos, šv. Pranciškaus, šv. Aloyzo, šv. Kazimiero atvaizdai. Industrializacijos ir urbanizacijos amžiaus permainos įtakojo ir šv. Juozapo - kelis šimtmečius Lietuvoje populiaraus šeimos globėjo - atvaizdų naują prasmę ir intenciją. Po pirmojo pasaulinio karo tradicinių "žemdirbių", kaip agrarinės šalies, šventųjų - šv. Jurgio ir šv. Izidoriaus atvaizdų bažnyčiose ėmė mažėti, nors jie vis dar išliko populiarūs liaudies mene. The character of the XX c. devotion was influenced by the Church revival program and the important social policy of Vatican, which paid much attention towards laymen, working men and youths. The main thought promoted by the Church during this period held to the view that God's love and mercy reaches everyone and it was reflected in church art themes. The narratives which conveyed suffering and pain subsequently disappeared and the new ones which symbolized love appeared more often. In Lithuania, like in the rest of the Catholic world, new merciful images of St. Virgin Mary became popular […]. The meaning of national freedom and freedom of faith was hidden in the growing repetitive appearance of the Madonna of Mercy of the Dawn Gate painting copies. Together with the actively instilled cult of the Sacred Heart, the devotion of St. Mary Heart grew too. During the inter-war period there was a rapid spread of the newly canonized St. Therese de Lisieux and St. Bosco John images. Both modern saints, along with the biggest youth organization ('Spring') patron St. Aloysius and the patron of Lithuania, St. Kazimieras, were considered the patrons of Catholic youth. St. Bosco John also was the patron of the fast growing layer of workers who embodied the main Church social directives in his life. The images of patrons of workers and maids organizations - St. Joseph and St.Zita often appeared in city churches. During the first half of the XX c., the narratives devoted for St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of tertiaries and the patron of the wide Catholic action, remained popular. […]

Straipsnyje aptariama 1913 m. Merkinės bažnyčios sienų tapyba, į darnią puošybinę visumą įtraukusi ir XVII a. II pusės skliautų lipdybą. Nagrinėjama skliautų dekoro religinė ir istorinė reikšmė, meninė išraiška. Patikslinamas bažnyčios dekoracijos datavimas ir nustatomas jos autorius - lig šiol dailėtyrininkams nežinotas Vilniaus tapytojas Kazimieras Imeninskis. Lietuvos bažnyčiose nedaug kur išliko sienų tapyba, sukurta XX a. pradžioje iki Pirmojo pasaulinio karo. Kas Merkinės bažnyčios polichrominės dekoracijos autorius? Be kelių nuošimčių tai - Kazimieras Imeninskis. Šį teiginį pagrindžia bažnyčios kasos išlaidos (K. Imeninskiui ir jo padėjėjams už dekoro, altorių atnaujinimo darbus buvo sumokėta per 6000 rub.) ir aptiktas paliudijimas senoje periodikoje. K. Imeninskis plačiai istoriografijoje minimas kaip 1917 m. nutapęs Merkinės bažnyčiai kryžiaus kelio stotis, kurių įgijimui aukojęs V. Krėvės-Mickevičiaus tėvas. Taip pat yra žinoma, kad K. Imeninskis nutapė ir Šv. Velykoms skirtas dekoracijas (šie darbai Merkinės bažnyčioje nebeišliko). K. Imeninskis vertas būti paminėtas dailininkų žodyne. The decor of the Merkinė Church is a rare piece of professional wall painting art in churches, created by local artists in the beginning of the 20th century. The wall painting at the Merkinė Church is a part of vault and wall decoration and together they make one harmonious decorative whole. Stylised vegetal ornaments and plot painting cover the vaults of the central nave and presbytery completely. The main cycle of the painted compositions of the Merkinė Church vaults are devoted to the invocations of the Virgin Mary litany and are the only instance of the broad development of this theme in the decor of Lithuanian churches. Glory titles of the Virgin in the above scenes are mainly depicted in the emblematic from and symbols, matching the theological meaning. The landscape of the Merkinė surroundings recognisable in the background of several compositions makes the complicated allegories closer to a churchgoer. The wall painting of the Merkinė Church, created in 1913, is a demonstration of not only the religious aspirations of the customers, but also of their national and political interests. The Emblem of Lithuania painted on the vaults of the presbytery together with the litany invocations in Lithuanian manifest the nationality of the parishioners of that time. At the same time, the ordering of this piece of art demonstrates that customers positively contemplated on the historical past of Merkinė and artistic heritage of the church as well as on the tradition of Virgin Mary adoration.

In the life of Lithuanian Church, the first half of the 20th century (approximately 1896-1944) may be considered as a period of revival between the two - tsarist and Soviet - occupations. [...] In the first half of the 20th century, church decoration was left to the competence of the parish and the dean. The parish committees, on exhausting their forces and means on construction works, often lacked means for church decoration; rather often than not it took several decades to arrange completely a church after its construction. The main goal of church builders at that period was to erect the building of a church and to start holding services in it. Although rather modest, state subsidies or timely loans still maintained alive the process of church building and renovation. It is possible that upon liquidating the debts, sometimes enormous, for church construction works a new stage in the existence of Catholic shrines - from building to decoration - could be opened. The Lithuanian state used two main ways to support the construction and renovation of churches, - either by subsidies or by assisting with building timber. The priority in getting the state's support was given to the churches that met the state requirements such as liquidation of the consequences of war, propagation of Lithuanianism (and Catholicism) or representation of the state.

Tarpukario Lietuvos dvasininkija savo ketinimus įamžinti svarbius Bažnyčiai ir tautai įvykius dažnai išreikšdavo kaip paminklų statybos iniciatorė. Šiam luomui buvo būdingas polinkis "įamžinti" istorijos faktus, tikėjimo pergalę. Todėl šiuo straipsniu ketinama papildyti dvasininkijos (Bažnyčios) - dailės užsakovo - problematiką lig šiol netyrinėtu aspektu: atskleisti visuotinesnio pobūdžio iniciatyvą nei užsakymai bažnyčių įrangai ar "parapijinių" paminklų statymas. Pateikiami nauji faktografiniai duomenys apie kelių memorialinės paskirties dailės kūrinių (M. Valančiaus paminklo Kauno Rotušės aikštėje, Lietuvos bažnytinės provincijos įsteigimui skirto atminimo medalio) sukūrimo aplinkybes išryškina įtakingų Lietuvos dvasininkų aspiracijas. Dvasininkija inicijavo daugiausia savo luomo atstovams pagerbti arba bažnyčiai reikšmingesniems įvykiams atminti skirtų dailės kūrinių sukūrimą. Į minėtuosius kūrybinius projektus buvo įtraukti skulptoriai V. Grybas, J. Zikaras ir P. Rimša. Pirmasis laimėjo atvirą M. Valančiaus paminklo projektų konkursą, kitiems dviem autoriams buvo pateiktas konkretus užsakymas atminimo medaliui sukurti. Vėliau paaiškėjo, kad konkrečia sutartimi grįstas dailės užsakymo kelias buvo sėkmingesnis nei konkurso, iš dalies privaloma auka ar mokestis - efektingesnė priemonė papildant užsakymo iždą nei geranoriškos aukų įplaukos ir pasitikėjimas visuomenės pilietiškumu. Tačiau užsakymo rezultatą lėmė ne vien pinigai, bet ir užsakovo aktyvumas. Clergy is an important customer of fine arts. Its orders are most often related to church decorations. In interwar Lithuania some orders of the clergy were of a more universal character induced by outstanding, well-known clergymen and supported by many priests. The author presents new factographic data on a number of clergy orders of memorial works of fine arts, which reveal the aspirations of the clergy. The project of the monument to Bishop M. Valančius in the Rotušė (City Hall) Square of Kaunas shows the intention to erect the most majestic, the main monument in Lithuania. This project is a significant part of a program of erecting monuments carried out by clergymen; its main intention was the desire to immortalize the idea of the identity of the national and spiritual revival, their tight interrelation. The medal by P. Rimša dedicated to memorize the establishment of the Lithuanian Church Province had to mark the most important religious event in Lithuanian history, which by its significance came up with the announcement of Independence. However, the memorial works ordered by clergy to immortalize the most important events in Church's life had one more intention - to stress one's own merits. The aspect of self-immortalization is prominent in the monuments erected by the chief Lithuanian clergyman, Archbishop Metropolitan Juozapas Skvireckas in his residence Linkuvėlė, particularly in the monument to Christ the Rex intended to memorize the 550th anniversary of the establishement of Christianity in Lithuania.

XX a. I pusės smulkioji Lietuvos faleristika dailėtyrininkų netyrinėjama, todėl daugelio senųjų lietuviškųjų ženklelių dailininkai vis dar nežinomi. Ženklelių atribucijos nepatikslino ir Nacionalinio M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejaus jubiliejinis leidinys „Mažieji Lietuvos istorijos paminklai“. Straipsnyje nustatyti kai kurie V. Bičiūno, V. Jomanto, V. K. Jonyno sukurti ženkleliai, jų datavimas, nagrinėjama „Pavasario" sąjungos ženklelių autorystė, datavimas, simbolika, platinimas. The authors of most of the Lithuanian badges dated 1918-1940 A.D. still remain unknown. Even the publication "The Small Monuments of Lithuanian History" edited by numismatists of the National M.K. Čiurlionis Museum did not specify the attribution of the badges more precisely. In this article the authorship symbolics and the dates of the badges are analysed. Great attention is given to badges of the Lithuanian Catholic Youth Society "The Spring" and to badges created by the famous Lithuanian artist V. Bičiūnas.
