Introduction: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) commonly involves large joints such as the knee and hip with smaller joints being less frequently involved. Extra-articular involvement is very rare, and here, we are presenting the first case of giant extra-articular SC originating from the ankle joint. Case Report: A 42-year-old male presented to the outpatient department with painless swelling over the lateral malleolus for 2 years. Diagnostic imaging suggested the involvement of the synovial lining with the swelling. The mass was excised and histopathology proved the diagnosis of SC. Conclusion: Extra-articular involvement in SC has been mainly reported in the synovial sheath or bursae of the hand and foot, but they can involve ankle joint also. In recent times, there have been concerns about potential malignant transformation of these lesion to chondrosarcoma, diagnosing these lesions have become important.

Steady State Superconducting Tokamak (SST-1) at the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) is an operational device and is the first superconducting Tokamak in India. Superconducting Magnets System (SCMS) in SST-1 comprises of sixteen Toroidal field (TF) magnets and nine Poloidal Field (PF) magnets manufactured using NbTi/Cu based cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC) concept. SST-1, superconducting TF magnets are operated in a Cryo-stable manner being cooled with two-phase (TP) flow helium. The typical operating pressure of the TP helium is 1.6 bar (a) at corresponding saturation temperature. The SCMS has a typical cool-down time of about 14 days from 300 K down to 4.5 K using Helium plant of equivalent cooling capacity of 1350 W at 4.5 K. Using the onset of experimental data from the HRL, we estimated the vapor quality for the input heat load on to the TF magnets system. In this paper, we report the characteristics of two-phase flow for given thermo-hydraulic conditions during long steady state operation of the SST-1 TF magnets. Finally, the experimentally obtained results have been compared with the well-known correlations of two-phase flow.

Cable-in-Conduit Conductors (CICCs) are used in the fabrication of superconducting fusion grade magnets. It acts as a narrow cryostat to provide cryo-stability with direct contact of coolant fluid to conductor. The superconducting magnets are cooled using forced flow (FF), supercritical helium or two phase (TP) cooling through void space in the CICC. Thermo-hydraulics using supercritical helium single phase flow is well-known and established. Research topic of behavior of forced flow, two phase (TP) helium cooling in CICC involves perceived risks of the CICC running into flow chocking and possible thermo-acoustic oscillations leading to flow instabilities. This research work involves study of forced flow two phase helium cooling in CICC wound superconducting magnets. The TP flow provides cryo-stability by the latent heat of helium not by enthalpy as in case of CICC being cooled with supercritical helium. Study reveals some attractive regimes in the case of TP cooling, at a given mass flow rate of single phase helium at the inlet and a heat flux acting on the CICC. Analysis carried out predicts significant gains with TP cooling on a prototype CICC, which is circular in cross section and appropriate for fusion devices for high magnetic field applications. These general formalisms may be extended to specific magnets wound with CICC. This paper describes analysis of TP cooling of a CICC.

Context: The cleft lip type nasal deformity presents one of the most complex surgical challenges. The long-term postoperative results are still not satisfactory despite an emphasis on primary nasal correction. This is attributed to tissue memory and healing. Nasoalveolar molding is used effectively to reshape the nasal cartilage and to mold the maxillary arch before cleft lip repair. Aims: This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of presurgical nasoalveolar molding in correction of cleft lip nasal deformity for patients with unilateral and bilateral clefts of the lip. Settings and Design: Twenty-three cases of clefts of lip and palate with nasal deformity were subjected to present study from May 2004 to May 2006. These cases were initially treated on outpatient basis, and they were admitted at the time of operation. All of these patients were children of less than 1 year of age, belonging to north Indian population. Material and Methods: Study consisted of patients of cleft lip and palate who were given presurgical nasoalveolar splints at early age. Lip repair was done after at least 2 months of molding. These patients along with control group (without presurgical nasoalveolar molding) were followed up for 1 year. Measurements were taken at different intervals in study over dental cast and on patients. Data obtained from comparison of 2 groups were analyzed using “MSTAT” analysis software (developed by Dr Russel Freed, Professor & Director, Crop & Soil Sciences Department, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan). Results: In our study, we found that nostril height was more in patients of experimental group (P = .18), while nostril width and alar perimeter were not changed significantly. Children with nasoalveolar molding had significant lengthening of columella (P = .02). Patients of unilateral cleft lip had more reduction in alveolar gap (P = .08) than bilateral group (P = .15). Conclusions: Nasoalveolar molding can be a useful adjunct for treatment of cleft lip nasal deformity. It is a cost-effective technique that can reduce the number of future surgeries such as alveolar bone grafting and secondary rhinoplasties.

A general continuum theory is developed for ion intercalation dynamics in a single crystal of a rechargeable battery cathode. It is based on an existing phase-field formulation of the bulk free energy and incorporates two crucial effects: (i) anisotropic ionic mobility in the crystal and (ii) surface reactions governing the flux of ions across the electrode/electrolyte interface, depending on the local free energy difference. Although the phase boundary can form a classical diffusive "shrinking core" when the dynamics is bulk-transport-limited, the theory also predicts a new regime of surface-reaction-limited (SRL) dynamics, where the phase boundary extends from surface to surface along planes of fast ionic diffusion, consistent with recent experiments on LiFePO4. In the SRL regime, the theory produces a fundamentally new equation for phase transformation dynamics, which admits traveling-wave solutions. Rather than forming a shrinking core of untransformed material, the phase boundary advances by filling (or emptying) successive channels of fast diffusion in the crystal. By considering the random nucleation of SRL phase-transformation waves, the theory predicts a very different picture of charge/discharge dynamics from the classical diffusion-limited model, which could affect the interpretation of experimental data for LiFePO4., 15 pages, 10 figures
