Background: COVID-19 is a systemic viral infection with a significant impact on the hematopoietic system, hemostasis as well as immune system. It would be of utmost importance to explore if the most routinely used tests could serve as an aid in determining patient’s clinical status or predicting severity of the disease. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 506 Covid-19 positive patients and 200 controls over a period of two months (June and July 2020). The cases were sub-classified based on disease severity into mild to moderate (n=337), severe (n=118) and very severe (n=51) and based on survivor status into survivors (n=473) and non-survivors (n=33). Results: There were statistically significant differences in WBC count, Absolute neutrophil count (ANC), Absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), absolute monocyte count (AMC), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) Red blood cell distribution width (RDW-SD) and RDW CV between covid cases vs controls; among the clinical subgroups and among the survivors and non-survivors. There was a significant strong positive correlation between various parameters, that is, NLR and MLR (r: 0.852, P=0), MPV and PDW (r: 0.912, P=0), MPV and PLCR (r: 0.956, P=0), PDW and PLCR (r: 0.893, P=0). NLR (AUC: 0.676, P=0) was the best single parameter and NLR+RDW-CV was best combination parameter as per area under curve (0.871) of ROC to distinguish severe from mild to moderate disease. Conclusions: Leucocytosis, neutrophilia, lymphopenia and monocytosis were characteristic findings in covid cases while NLR and NLR+RDW-CV emerged as the most effective single and combination CBC parameters in distinguishing mild to moderate and severe cases respectively.

2D Ruddlesden Popper perovskites have been extensively studied for their exceptional optical and electronic characteristics while only a few studies have shed light on their mechanical properties. The existing literature mainly discusses the mechanical strength of single crystal perovskites, however a systematic study towards structure tunability of 2D perovskite thin films is still missing. In this study, we report the effect of number of inorganic layers `n' on elastic modulus of Butylammonium based 2D, quasi-2D perovskites and 3D perovskite using nanoindentation technique. The experimental results have also been substantiated using first principle density functional theory calculations. Understanding the mechanical behaviour of 2D Ruddlesden Popper perovskites thin films in comparison with conventional 3D perovskite offers intriguing insights into the atomic layer dependent properties and paves the path for next generation mechanically durable novel devices.

It is well understood that the intrinsic mechanical properties of reinforcements and second phases strongly influence those of composite materials and alloys; however, these properties are challenging to determine due to the small size and irregular shape of the particles. We present a method for the measurement of the fracture toughness of micron-sized specimens based on Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling, combined with micro-mechanical testing techniques and Finite Element (FE) simulation. Microscopic chevron-notched cantilever beams are first machined. These beams are subsequently loaded using a nanoindentation testing apparatus. It is found that the crack initiates at the chevron notch tip under a load that is in most tests lower than that corresponding to the onset of crack instability. Some degree of stable crack growth can thus be observed and meaningful toughness measurements gleaned on these small tested volumes. The measurements are furthermore minimally influenced by milling-induced defects given that, at the onset of unstable growth, most of the crack front is situated away from the FIB-machined surface. Test data are interpreted using compliance calibration curves determined by three‑dimensional FE simulation of each beam, after measurement of its dimensions using electron microscopy. The method is applied to nanocrystalline Nextel ™ 610 alumina fibres, which are used in aluminium-matrix composites. Results are consistent with expected values for the material at hand, suggesting that the technique is reliable despite the small specimen size, and that it can be transposed to other reinforcements. The influence on the test of environmentally induced subcritical crack growth, known to be operative with alumina in air, is also examined.
