This study aims to examine how faculty members can utilize IT-based group assignment functions in higher education under online, hybrid, and conventional educational settings. For this purpose, the author reviews the related articles and discusses proper pedagogical techniques and practices. Based on such considerations, suggestions on how to utilize the group assignment box in the Desire to Learn (D2L) online educational platform for students in the conventional classroom, online, and hybrid classes are offered. Students, faculty members, and practitioners in the business and other disciplines are expected to derive implications on how to manage flexible online educational modules for those dealing with unexpected changes and issues.

2,3‐Butanediol (2,3‐BDO) is a promising bulk chemical owing to its high potential in industrial applications. Here, we engineered Klebsiella oxytoca for the economic production of 2,3‐BDO using mixed sugars from renewable biomass. First, to improve xylose consumption, the xylose transporter gene (xylE) was integrated into the methylglyoxal synthase A (mgsA)‐coding gene loci, and the engineered CHA004 strain showed much faster consumption of xylose than wild‐type (WT) strain with 1.4‐fold increase of overall sugar consumption rate. To further improve sugar utilization, we performed adaptive laboratory evolution for 90 days. The evolved strain (CHA006) was evaluated by cultivating it in the media containing single‐ or mixed‐sugars, and it was clearly observed that CHA006 has improved sugar consumption and 2,3‐BDO production than those of the parental strain. Finally, we demonstrated the superiority of CHA006 by culturing in two lignocellulosic hydrolysates derived from sunflower or pine tree. Particularly, in the pine tree hydrolysate containing xylose, glucose, galactose, and mannose, the CHA006 strain showed much improved consumption rates for all sugars, and 2,3‐BDO productivity (0.73 g L−1 hr−1) increased by 3.2‐fold compared to WT strain. We believe that the engineered CHA006 strain can be a potential host in the development of economic bioprocess for 2,3‐BDO through efficient utilization of mixed sugars derived from lignocellulosic biomass.

Silicon carbide (SiC) bicrystals were prepared by diffusion bonding, and their grain boundary was observed using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The n-type electrical conductivity of a SiC single crystal was confirmed by scanning nonlinear dielectric microscopy (SNDM). Dopant profiling of the sample by SNDM showed that the interface acted as an electrical insulator with a ~2-μm-thick carrier depletion layer. The carrier depletion layer contained a higher number of oxygen impurities than the bulk crystals due to the incorporation of oxygen from the native oxide film during diffusion bonding. Density functional theory calculations of the density of states as a function of the bandgap also supported these findings. The existence of a carrier depletion layer was also confirmed in a p-type polycrystalline SiC ceramic. These results suggest that the electrical conductivity of SiC ceramics was mostly affected by carrier depletion near the grain boundary rather than the grain boundary itself.

Leuconostoccitreum, a hetero-fermentative type of lactic acid bacteria, is a crucial probiotic candidate because of its ability to promote human health. However, inefficient gene manipulation tools limit its utilization in bioindustries. We report, for the first time, the development of a CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) interference (CRISPRi) system for engineering L. citreum. For reliable expression, the expression system of synthetic single guide RNA (sgRNA) and the deactivated Cas9 of Streptococcus pyogenes (SpdCas9) were constructed in a bicistronic design (BCD) platform using a high-copy-number plasmid. The expression of SpdCas9 and sgRNA was optimized by examining the combination of two synthetic promoters and Shine&ndash, Dalgarno sequences, the strong expression of sgRNA and the weak expression of SpdCas9 exhibited the most significant downregulation (20-fold decrease) of the target gene (sfGFP), without cell growth retardation caused by SpdCas9 overexpression. The feasibility of the optimized CRISPRi system was demonstrated by modulating the biosynthesis of riboflavin. Using the CRISPRi system, the expression of ribF and folE genes was downregulated (3.3-fold and 5.6-fold decreases, respectively), thereby improving riboflavin production. In addition, the co-expression of the rib operon was introduced and the production of riboflavin was further increased up to 1.7 mg/L, which was 1.53 times higher than that of the wild-type strain.

An electrically conductive SiC-Ti2CN composite was fabricated from β-SiC and TiN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3-Sc2O3 additives by conventional hot-pressing. The composite (electrical resistivity of nearly 10-4 Ω·cm) was wire electro discharge machined into a specimen having a thickness of 500 μm. Entrance clearance, machining time, number of shorts, material removal rate (MRR), counts, and the effects of the capacitance and voltage of conductive SiC-Ti2CN composite during micro electrical discharge drilling were measured and compared to those of SUS304. As the unit discharge energy increased, entrance clearance, machining time, and number of shorts decreased. A decrement in the number of shorts was the main reason for decrements in entrance clearance and machining time. MRR was proportional to unit discharge energy. The study to determine the location of shorts during electro discharge drilling was also conducted. It was founded that the short circuit occurred mainly at the beginning (0–1000 cts) because of low electrical density, and right before the exit (3000–5000 cts) owing to the difficulty of removing debris. Both the capacitance and voltage tended to be inversely proportional to the number of shorts.

The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Leuconostoc citreum are non-sporulating hetero-fermentative bacteria that play an important role in the fermented food industry. In this study, for the enhanced and reliable production of recombinant proteins in L. citreum, we developed a bicistronic design (BCD) expression system which includes a short leader peptide (1st cistron) followed by target genes (2nd cistron) under the control of a single promoter. Using superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) as a reporter, the functionality of BCD in L. citreum was verified. Further, to improve the expression in BCD, we tried to engineer a Shine-Dalgarno sequence (SD2) for the 2nd cistron and a promoter by FACS screening of random libraries, and both strong SD2 (eSD2) and promoter (P710V4) were successfully isolated. The usefulness of the engineered BCD with P710V4 and eSD2 was further validated using three model proteins—glutathione-s-transferase, human growth hormone, and α-amylase. All examined proteins were successfully produced with levels highly increased compared with those in the original BCD as well as the monocistronic design (MCD) expression system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine knowledge sharing with external partners within the China context, demonstrating that paternalistic leadership combined with the resulting reciprocal relations between leaders and employees are accountable for knowledge transfer with external partners based on social exchange. Design/methodology/approach This study collected data at two time-points and obtained 391 usable observations for hypothesis testing using questionnaire surveys administered to the managers of major Chinese companies. Findings Empirical analysis of employees at major Chinese firms shows that paternalistic leadership may encourage perceived reciprocal support from employees that results in smooth knowledge sharing with outsiders in the form of voluntary helping behaviors. Originality/value This study expects that both scholars and practitioners will gain answers on how to best encourage employees into contributing toward relationships with external stakeholders within the China context. One valuable point in this study is demonstrating that Chinese firms’ benevolent leadership promotes human relationships and thereby long-term relationships with alliance partners, while their moral leadership promotes ethical trust between alliance partners. These factors may accordingly further increase knowledge sharing opportunities with external partners.

A dense silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic with a very high flexural strength at 2000 °C (981 ± 128 MPa) was obtained by conventional hot-pressing with extremely low additive content (2000 ppm Y2O3). Observations using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed that (1) homophase (SiC/SiC) boundaries were clean without an intergranular glassy phase and (2) junction pockets consisted of nanocrystalline Y-containing phase embedded in an amorphous Y-Si-O-C-N phase. The excellent strength at 2000 °C was attributed to the clean SiC/SiC boundary and the strengthening effect of plastic deformation.

SiC-Zr 2 CN composites were fabricated from β-SiC and ZrN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y 2 O 3 -Sc 2 O 3 additives via conventional hot pressing at 2000 °C for 3 h in a nitrogen atmosphere. The electrical and thermal properties of the SiC-Zr 2 CN composites were investigated as a function of initial ZrN content. Relative densities above 98% were obtained for all samples. The electrical conductivity of Zr 2 CN composites increased continuously from 3.8 × 10 3 (Ωm) −1 to 2.3 × 10 5 (Ωm) −1 with increasing ZrN content from 0 to 35 vol%. In contrast, the thermal conductivity of the composites decreased from 200 W/mK to 81 W/mK with increasing ZrN content from 0 to 35 vol%. Typical electrical and thermal conductivity values of the SiC-Zr 2 CN composites fabricated from a SiC-10 vol% ZrN mixture were 2.6 × 10 4 (Ωm) −1 and 168 W/m K, respectively.

Bulk SiC ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering, and the effects of Y 2 O 3 addition on the structural and electrical properties were investigated. Raman spectroscopy revealed that SiC specimens with low Y 2 O 3 content (0.01 and 0.05 wt%) contained a graphitic phase (1580 and 2710 cm −1 ) which was insignificant for high Y 2 O 3 content (1.0 and 5.0 wt%). Carbon-rich SiC specimens exhibited p-type conduction character, while others exhibited n-type character. The p- and n-type SiC specimens had electrical resistivities around 10 −2 Ω cm but exhibited photoluminescence spectra quite different from each other. The p-type character is primarily attributable to silicon vacancies (V Si ), while the n-type character is ascribed to nitrogen substitution in carbon sites (N C ) of the zincblende lattice. The change in conduction type with yttria addition in the SiC specimen can be understood in terms of a competition between the densities of V Si and N C .

This study explores how firms manage the entire life cycle of innovation projects based on the framework of harvesting and planting innovation. While harvesting innovation seeks new products in the expectation of financial performance in the short term, planting innovation pursues creating value over a long time period. Without proper management of the process of planting and harvesting innovation, firms with limited resources may not be successful in launching innovative new products to seize a momentum in high tech industries. To examine this issue, the case of Samsung Electronics (SE), now an electronics giant originated from a former developing country, is analyzed. SE has shown to effectively utilize co-innovation to maintain numerous planting and harvesting innovation projects. Both researchers and practitioners would be interested in learning about how SE shared risks of innovation investment with external partners at the early stage of innovation cycles.

Dense SiC–Ti2CN composites were fabricated from β-SiC and 4 vol% TiN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–RE2O3 (RE = Sm, Gd, Lu) additives by conventional hot pressing. Electrical and mechanical properties of the SiC–Ti2CN composites were investigated with a variation of sintering additive composition. Relative densities of ∼99.9% were achieved for all specimens. All specimens exhibited electrical resistivities on the order of ∼10−5 Ω m. These low electrical resistivities were attributed to heavy nitrogen doping in the SiC lattice (carrier density ∼1020 cm−3). Typical electrical resistivity, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness values of the SiC–Ti2CN composite sintered with 2 vol% Y2O3–Lu2O3 additives were 2.2 × 10−5 Ω m, 722 MPa, 4.6 MPa m1/2, and 25 GPa, respectively.

In this study, we investigated the electrical and thermal properties of SiC ceramics with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–RE2O3 (RE = Sm, Gd, Lu) additives. The three SiC ceramics with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–RE2O3 additives showed electrical conductivities on the order of ~103 (Ω·m)−1, which is one order of magnitude higher than that of the SiC ceramics sintered with 2 vol% Y2O3 only. The increase in electrical conductivity is attributed to the growth of heavily nitrogen-doped SiC grains during sintering and the confinement of oxide additives in the junction area. The thermal conductivities of the SiC ceramics were in the 176–198 W·(m·K)−1 range at room temperature. The new additive systems, equimolar Y2O3–RE2O3, are beneficial for achieving both high electrical conductivity and high thermal conductivity in SiC ceramics.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Polyporus Herbal-acupuncture(PO-HA) at KI10 (Umgok) on nephritis induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS) in rats. Methods: Rats were allocated into normal, control, and 2 experimental groups. The rats in the control group were intra-peritoneally injected with LPS for nephritis induction. The rats in the groups of experiment 1 and experiment 2 were treated with Saline injection, and PO-HA, respectively at KI10 three times for a week and then intra-peritoneally injected with LPS. To evaluate the effects of PO-HA at KI10, WBC count in blood, creatine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant 1(CINC-1) in serum, urinary volume, creatinine, total protein in urine, myeloperoxidase(MPO) in kidney were measured. Results: PO-HA at KI10 significantly suppressed the increase of WBC in blood, TNF-α , CINC-1 in serum, MPO in kidney of LPS-stimulated rats. PO-HA at KI10 significantly suppressed the increase creatinine, total protein in urine of LPS-stimulated rats. Conclusions: According to these results, it is postulated that PO-HA at KI10 has an anti-inflammatory and renal-protective effects on LPS-induced nephritis in rats. Therefore, it is suggested that PO-HA at KI10 may be an useful therapeutics for nephritis in clinical field after further researches.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between corporate venture capital (CVC) investment and the level of knowledge transferred from start-ups to corporate investors. It also delineates the conditions under which CVC investment facilitates the knowledge transfer. Design/methodology/approach – A longitudinal design is used to examine annual snapshots of CVC investment and patent citing activities for the period from 1995 to 2005. This paper uses a negative binomial Poisson regression model to test proposed research hypotheses. Findings – The authors found that that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of CVC investments and the level of knowledge transferred from the start-up. The results of this study also found that knowledge diversity of the investing firm moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship. Originality/value – This research contributes to the search literature by conceptualizing CVC investment as a distant search process for sourcing external knowledge from start-ups. By arguing theoretically and demonstrating empirically the effects of tie strength of CVC structure and technological knowledge diversity on organizational knowledge transfer, this current study extends the previous understanding and applicability of social relations and technological diversity to understand CVC activity.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of Korean medical treatment with Hominis Placenta Pharmacopunture(HPP) on cold hypersensitivity of hands. Methods : A 46-year-old female patient whose chief complaint was cold hypersensitivity of hands was treated with Placenta Pharmacopunture at LI4 and LI10, ten times for a month. Acupuncture and herbal medicine were added depending on the symptoms. Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(D.I.T.I) was taken and Visual Analog Scale(VAS) was examined before and after each treatment. Results : After the treatments, the symptoms were improved. Conclusions : DITI and VAS showed that the patient`s cold hypersensitivity of hands was improved after Korean medical treatment with Hominis Placenta Pharmacopuncture.

SiC–TiC0.5N0.5 composites were fabricated from β-SiC and TiN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–Sc2O3 additives by conventional hot pressing. Thermal and mechanical properties of the SiC–TiC0.5N0.5 composites were investigated as a function of initial TiN content. Relative densities of ≥98.9% were achieved for all samples. The addition of a small amount of TiN increased thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of SiC ceramics. However, further addition of TiN in excess of 10 and 20 vol% deteriorated both thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the composites, respectively. In contrast, the fracture toughness of the composites increased continuously from 4.2 to 6.2 MPa∙m1/2 with increasing initial TiN content from 0 to 35 vol%, due to crack deflection by TiC0.5N0.5. The maximum values of thermal conductivity and flexural strength were 224 W/m K for a 2 vol% TiC0.5N0.5 and 599 MPa for a 10 vol% TiC0.5N0.5 composite.

The aim of this study is to provide a theoretical framework concerning how firms exert isomorphic pressures to survive and thrive in the existing market. In addition to the institutional strategies (Lawrence, 1999), the authors clarify the relationship among isomorphic pressures from firms, the value of firm resources, and sustainable competitive advantage. For this purpose, this paper reviews institutional isomorphism and relevant theories like resource based view, transaction cost theory, and resource dependency theory. It then provides propositions based on theoretical reviews and inferences. Firms are expected to strengthen their resources by exerting various isomorphic pressures: coercive, mimetic, and normative. Therefore, they are more likely to beat competitors even in the existing markets. The implications are discussed at the end of the paper. First of all, this study provides an extension to the horizon of institutionalization strategies by providing an additional viewpoint. In addition, it enlightens the importance of firm strategies based on corporal isomorphic pressures. Practitioners are recommended to consider their firms¡¯ ability to conform other stakeholders as a significant strategic asset.

Cardiovascular complications have been major concerns in the treatment of diabetes, and up to 80% of all deaths in diabetic patients are linked to cardiovascular problems. Impaired angiogenesis is one of the most serious symptoms associated with diabetes, resulting in delayed wound healing and lower limb amputation. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), a subpopulation of adult stem cells, are recruited from bone marrow to the injured vessel to promote endothelial regeneration and neovascularization, playing an important role in angiogenesis. Interestingly, several clinical studies have showed that the number of recruited EPCs is reduced and their function is decreased under diabetic conditions, implying that diabetic EPC dysfunction may contribute to defective angiogenesis and resultant cardiovascular complications in diabetes. To recover the functional abilities of diabetic EPCs and to address possible application of EPC cell therapy to diabetic patients, some studies provided explanations for diabetic EPC dysfunction including increased oxidative stress, involvement of the inflammatory response, alteration in the nitric oxide pathway and reduced signals for EPC recruitment. This review discusses clinical evidence of impairment of EPC functions under diabetic conditions and the suggested mechanisms for diabetic EPC dysfunction.

The oncogenic ability of aberrant hepatocyte growth factor receptor (Met) signaling is thought to mainly rely on its mitogenic and anti-apoptotic effects. Recently, however, cumulating evidences suggest that genomic instability may be a crucial factor in tumorigenesis. Here, we address whether oncogenic Met receptor is linked to the centrosome abnormality and genomic instability. We showed that expression of the constitutive active Met (CA-Met) induced supernumerary centrosomes probably due to deregulated centrosome duplication, which was accompanied with multipolar spindle formation and aneuploidy. Interestingly, LY294002, a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, significantly suppressed the appearance of supernumerary centrosomes. Moreover, knockdown of Akt with small interfering RNAs and overexpression of phosphatase and tensin homolog or dominant-negative Akt abrogated supernumerary centrosome formation, evidencing the involvement of PI3K signaling. We further showed that expression of CA-Met significantly increased aneuploidy in p53(-/-) HCT116 cells, but not in p53(+/+) HCT116 cells, indicating that the ability of CA-Met to induce chromosomal instability (CIN) phenotype is related with p53 status. Together, our data demonstrate that aberrant hepatocyte growth factor/Met signaling induces centrosome amplification and CIN via the PI3K-Akt pathway, providing an example that oncogenic growth factor signals prevalent in a wide variety of cancers have cross talks to centrosome abnormality and CIN.

The p90 ribosomal S6 kinase family (RSK1-4) of Ser/Thr kinases is a downstream component of the Ras-MAPK cascade responsible for regulating various cellular processes. Here, we examined the potential involvement of RSKs in regulating mitosis by transfecting HeLa cells with siRNAs targeting RSK1 and -2, which are the major isoforms. Depletion of RSK1 but not RSK2 triggered a significant accumulation of binucleated cells compared to control cells (0.5% vs. 10.5%, respectively); this was rescued by expression of exogenous RSK1 but not a kinase-defective mutant. Monitoring of cell division by time-lapse imaging revealed that the observed binucleation mainly stemmed from a failure to form and ingress the cleavage furrow during early cytokinesis. Immunocytochemical analysis of RhoA and anillin, the two principal regulators of cleavage furrow formation and ingression, showed that these proteins were abnormally localized during anaphase in RSK1-depleted cells. Furthermore, RSK1-depleted cells seemed to have impairments in midzone microtubule formation, as suggested by morphological changes and lengthening of the midzone (15.2 ± 1.7 μm vs. 17.4 ± 1.7 μm in control cells). We also observed shortening of the pole-to-polar-cortex distance in RSK1-depleted cells (4.30 ± 1.37 μm vs. 2.80 ± 0.84 μm in control cells) and scanty distribution of microtubules at the periphery of the equatorial region during anaphase, suggesting an aberrant distribution of astral microtubules. Taken together, these results suggest that RSK1 is specifically required for cleavage furrow formation and ingression during cytokinesis. This may occur via the involvement of RSK1 in proper midzone and astral microtubule structure formation during anaphase, which is essential for the correct localization of anillin and RhoA.

Background The NSCLC patients who experienced good clinical responses to an EGFR-TKI will inevitably develop acquired resistance. A great deal of research is being carried out to discover the molecular mechanisms underlying this resistance. In comparison, few studies have been conducted to find out about the clinical characteristics of acquired resistance in the patients who had responded to an EGFR-TKI. Herein we investigated clinical characteristics of NSCLC patients who experienced acquired resistance during gefitinib therapy. Patients and methods We reviewed NSCLC patients who showed a clinical benefit from initial gefitinib therapy. All clinical data were obtained from 11 centers of Korean Molecular Lung Cancer Group (KMLCG). The clinical manifestations of acquired resistance, time to progression (TTP), and post-progression survival (PPS) after gefitinib failure were analyzed retrospectively. Results A total of 417 patients were recruited. Median TTP was 10.2 months (95% CI, 9.5–10.9). TTP showed a significant longer duration in female, non-smoker, and patients with adenocarcinoma. At the time of acquired resistance, 63.3% of the patients showed symptomatic deterioration. Sites of disease progression were as follows: primary lung lesion in 58.4%, previous metastasis in 38.3%, and new metastasis in 54.2%. Patients with EGFR wild type showed a tendency of higher frequency in symptomatic deterioration and newly development of CNS metastasis compared with patients with EGFR mutation. There was a significant difference in newly development of lung metastasis between patients with exon 19 deletion and those with L858R mutation (41.4% vs. 6.3%, p =0.02). PPS was 8.9 months (95% CI, 7.4–10.4). Smoking history, PS, new CNS lesion and subsequent chemotherapy were independent factors for PPS. Conclusion This study suggests that clinical manifestations of acquired resistance may be different according to EGFR mutation status and EGFR mutation genotype. In addition, subsequent chemotherapy confers clinical benefit in terms of PPS in NSCLC patients who experienced acquired resistance after gefitinib therapy.

This study explores the overlooked aspect of resource based view (RBV). Given the assumption that the relative superiority of resources determines the results of competition, firms are expected to retain sustainable competitive advantage by inhibiting the value creation of other competitors from their resources. The offensive framework of RBV explains how to maintain such a state over other market participants. Based on the theoretical perspectives, including micro-foundation of resources, several propositions are provided concerning this issue. First of all, firms inhibit competitors from acquiring and retaining talent. In addition, firms¡¯ innovation activities lower the value of competitors¡¯ resources. Finally, firms utilize their resources to inhibit competitors¡¯ profit realization, resulting in their competitive advantage. The implications for both academia and industry are discussed, while future research directions are suggested. Firms are recommended to be considered as aggressive warriors as well as farmers or manufacturers.

The C5aR antagonist (C5aRA) 1 , which blocks the interaction of C5a anaphylatoxin and its receptor C5aR, is one of the most potent therapeutic agents for the treatment of various autoimmune diseases and acute inflammatory conditions. Here we developed an efficient C5aRA production system using Escherichia coli . To produce functional C5aRA, which contains three disulfide bonds, we used E. coli Origami (DE3), which possessed an oxidative cytoplasm, as the production host. To improve solubility and ease in purification, we examined the effectiveness of three different fusion partners, including N utilization substrate A (NusA), maltose-binding protein (MBP), and thioredoxin A (TrxA), as well as three different culture temperatures (i.e., 25, 30, and 37 °C). Among the three fusion partners, MBP exhibited the highest solubility in the fusion protein at all tested temperatures. However, the highest biological activity against C5aR was observed with the NusA fusion. For large-scale production, batch fermentation was also performed using a NusA-fused C5aRA production system by using a lab-scale bioreactor. After a 12-h cultivation, approximately 496 mg/L of NusA-fused C5aRA could be produced.

Human kringle domains (KDs) are ubiquitously expressed binding modulators that fold into seven flexible loops and it has been previously demonstrated that KDs can be engineered toward target-specific binding proteins as a non-antibody protein scaffold. Here, we report a method for efficient expression of a KD derivative (KD548)-a promising anti-cancer agent-by high-cell-density culture of Escherichia coli at a preparative scale production. The correct folding of KD548 requires three disulfide bonds. Nevertheless, cytoplasmic expression of KD548 in E. coli led to good yields of highly soluble proteins with high activity. For efficient expression, four sets of expression systems consisting of different promoters (lac or T7) and fusion tags (His or FLAG) were examined. Of these, the expression system using a combination of the T7 promoter with the FLAG tag resulted in the highest production in shake flask cultivation as well as in high-cell-density cultivation performed in a 6.6-L jar bioreactor. When protein expression was induced at high-cell density (optical density [OD] = 100) and when complex feeding solutions were supplemented, cell density (maximum OD = 184) and production yield (approximately 5.4 g/L) were significantly enhanced to values that were much higher than those found previously with Pichia cultivation (8 mg/L).

After the appearance of the first FDA-approved antibody 25 years ago, antibodies have become major therapeutic agents in the treatment of many human diseases, including cancer and infectious diseases, and the use of antibodies as therapeutic/diagnostic agents is expected to increase in the future. So far, a variety of strategies have been devised for engineering of these fascinating molecules to develop superior properties and functions. Recent progress in systems biology has provided more information about the structures and cellular networks of antibodies, and, in addition, recent development of biotechnology tools, particularly in regard to high-throughput screening, has made it possible to perform more intensive engineering on these substances. Based on a sound understanding and new technologies, antibodies are now being developed as more powerful drugs. In this review, we highlight the recent, significant progress that has been made in antibody engineering, with a particular focus on Fc engineering and glycoengineering for improved functions, and cellular engineering for enhanced production of antibodies in yeast and bacterial hosts.

Undifferentiated sarcoma is an uncommon primary malignant tumor of the liver typically occurring in older children. It is also referred to as malignant mesenchymoma, fibromyxosarcoma, or mesenchymal sarcoma. We experienced a case of undifferentiated sarcoma in 72-year-old male. Contrast enhanced liver CT scan revealed a 3.4 cm heterogeneously enhancing, ill-defined, and low attenuated mass in the left liver and subtle intrahepatic duct dilatation. And, in tubogram, there were segmental stenosis and occlusion from the hilum to the proximal common bile duct. We did ultrasonography guided liver biopsy. The pathologic finding revealed infiltrative growth of atypical cells with rhabdoid features. Some atypical cells showed clear cytoplasm, but no organoid pattern was identified. The stroma around atypical cells was filled with eosinophilic hyaline material. These tumor cells were positive for vimentin only, and the tumor was consistent with undifferentiated sarcoma of the liver.

A Lattice reduction (LR) aided receiver for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems can achieve near ML detector performance. However, Performing LR for each subcarrier can result in a large complexity. To deal with this problem, a low complexity scheme for lattice reduction (LR) aided detection in the MIMO OFDM system is presented. From exploiting frequency correlation among the neighboring channel matrix and the uni-modular transformation matrix of the preceding subcarrier, nearly LR reduced channel matrix is produced. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve the same performance with the conventional system while its complexity is significantly lower.

In this paper, lattice reduction (LR) aided detection with reduced complexity is developed for the detection of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in time- correlated channel. The proposed scheme computes the LLL-reduced channel matrix at the present time by using the present channel matrix multiplied with the unimodular transformation matrix of the previous symbol time as the initial value of LLL reduction algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve the same performance with significantly reduced complexity. Implementation of the proposed scheme with fixed number of iteration for limited complexity in practical system provides the almost same performance as conventional scheme.

This paper examines how firms in emerging economies implement value co-creation from the perspectives of harvesting innovation and planting innovation. Due to these firms' relative financial and managerial disadvantages, they must focus on the balance between innovation efforts and cash flows to ensure survival and growth. Employing the harvesting and planting categorisations enables examination of value co-creation practices for both the short and long term. Harvesting innovation seeks commercial products using recent discoveries (i.e., reaping the bounty of previous efforts); planting innovation pursues technological leap with the objective to produce the sources of future products (i.e., sowing the seeds of tomorrow's innovations). A theoretical framework of value co-creation for the two types of innovation for firms in emerging economies is proposed with a focus on the reasons and mechanisms for these firms to actively co-create value with various participants, including end consumers, customers, and government.

BACKGROUND Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease occurring in women of reproductive age and leading to progressive respiratory failure in spite of treatment. In Korea the first case was reported in 1984 and by 1997 a total of 23 cases had been reported. The clinical findings of these Korean cases are reviewed. METHODS The details of 10 cases of LAM on file at Seoul National University Hospital were reviewed together with those of 13 cases previously reported from other Korean institutes. Two, including the only one to be reported in a man, were excluded after reviewing the clinical, radiological, and pathological findings, leaving a total of 21 cases in the present study. RESULTS All 21 patients were women and in all cases the disease was proven pathologically. The mean (SD) age at onset of symptoms was 32 (8.6) years. The most common symptoms were dyspnoea and pneumothorax which were seen in 19 (90%) and 13 (76%) patients, respectively. Pulmonary function tests showed decreased transfer factor (Tlco) (100%) and airflow limitation (67%). All the cases had characteristic cysts on high resolution computed tomographic (HRCT) scanning. The overall severity score based on HRCT scans correlated with the percentage predicted Tlco/Va (p = 0.03) and FEV 1 /FVC (p = 0.02). The patients were all treated with medroxyprogesterone and/or tamoxifen. Follow up was possible in 10 cases. Two of these patients appeared to stabilise with no appreciable change clinically or in lung function on medroxyprogesterone and/or tamoxifen, but the remaining patients all deteriorated with two dying of respiratory insufficiency and one of infection following lung transplantation. CONCLUSIONS As in other countries, in Korea LAM occurs exclusively in women and progresses despite hormonal treatment.
