In observational studies evaluating the treatment effect on a given out- come, the treated and untreated subjects may be highly unbalanced in their observed covariates, and these differences can lead to biased estimates of treatment effects. Propensity score is popular tool to reduce this bias. In this work we propose to esti- mate the propensity score by using Bayesian Networks as alternative to conventional logistic regression. Based on it, we develop an inferential methodology to evaluate the treatment effect. In simulation study, our proposed approach resulted in the best performance.

The outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) emitted to space is a fundamental component of the Earth’s energy budget. There are numerous, entangled physical processes that contribute to OLR and that are responsible for driving, and responding to, climate change. Spectrally resolved observations can disentangle these processes, but technical limitations have precluded accurate space-based spectral measurements covering the far infrared (FIR) from 100 to 667 cm−1 (wavelengths between 15 and 100 µm). The Earth’s FIR spectrum is thus essentially unmeasured even though at least half of the OLR arises from this spectral range. The region is strongly influenced by upper-tropospheric–lower-stratospheric water vapor, temperature lapse rate, ice cloud distribution, and microphysics, all critical parameters in the climate system that are highly variable and still poorly observed and understood. To cover this uncharted territory in Earth observations, the Far-Infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) mission has recently been selected as ESA’s ninth Earth Explorer mission for launch in 2026. The primary goal of FORUM is to measure, with high absolute accuracy, the FIR component of the spectrally resolved OLR for the first time with high spectral resolution and radiometric accuracy. The mission will provide a benchmark dataset of global observations which will significantly enhance our understanding of key forcing and feedback processes of the Earth’s atmosphere to enable more stringent evaluation of climate models. This paper describes the motivation for the mission, highlighting the scientific advances that are expected from the new measurements.

The Advanced Infra-Red WAter Vapour Estimator (AIRWAVE) algorithm [Casadio et al. (2016)] exploits the dual view of the Thermal Infrared channels of the ATSR instruments and a sea surface emissivity dataset to compute the Total Column of Water Vapour (TCWV) over water in clear sky conditions. 20-years of day-night TCWV dataset have been produced applying AIRWAVE to the measurements of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) missions. AIRWAVE has been developed for observations over water surfaces but the algorithm can also be applied to land surfaces. The main difficulty in exploiting land measurements is linked to the knowledge of the surface emissivity in the ATSR infrared channels. While sea emissivity is generally close to one and is almost constant all over the globe, land emissivity has strong variations depending on e.g. surface type and vegetation cover. Furthermore, the angular emissivity variations can also be relevant. For the extension of the AIRWAVE algorithm to land surfaces, one strategy is the use of tabulated emissivity datasets. The limitations of these datasets is that they report data relative to only daytime (ATSR measures both day and night) and the data are averaged over long time spans (tenth of days). Another strategy is the use of retrieved emissivities from instruments covering the same spectral region of the TIR channels of ATSR and measuring almost at the same time. Recently Masiello et al. (2013-2015) have developed a retrieval scheme to obtain the Land Emissivity from SEVIRI observations. SEVIRI measures on board the geostationary satellite Meteosat and two of its channels superimpose to the TIR channels of ATSR. Therefore, SEVIRI and AATSR/ENVISAT represent a perfect match to test the possibility of a joint analysis to get both land emissivities and TCWV. In this work we will show the results of the application of the AIRWAVE algorithm to measurements over land. We will critically compare the results obtained using emissivity databases and the SEVIRI retrieved emissivities, assessing their performance through the comparison of the obtained results with correlative data contained into the ESA DUE GlobVapour project (http://www.globvapour.info/). L'incontro tra persone di culture diverse non è certamente un fenomeno sociale nuovo; nuova piuttosto ne risulta l'entità. Le società occidentali contemporanee, infatti, ciascuna con un diverso livello di esposizione al contatto, con modalità differenti anche per natura dell'esperienza relazionale inter-gruppi, sembrerebbero procedere, seppur lentamente, verso una composizione plurietnica e multiculturale da un punto di vista pratico e simbolico-valoriale. Tra le nozioni che intervengono nell'acceso dibattito attorno all'attuale fenomeno migratorio, il tema dei processi d'interculturalità ha assunto negli ultimi decenni un peso crescente per le determinanti e la fenomenologia delle migrazioni internazionali e di pari passo con i cambiamenti socio-economici dei Paesi di accoglienza, affermandosi con insistenza negli ambiti della ricerca sociale e delle politiche pubbliche.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are very widespread, forming symbiotic associations with similar to 80% of land plant species, including almost all crop plants. These fungi are considered of great interest for their use as biofertilizer in low-input and organic agriculture. In addition to an improvement in plant nutrition, AM fungi have been reported to enhance plant tolerance to important abiotic and biotic environmental conditions, especially to a reduced availability of resources. These features, to be exploited and applied in the field, require a thorough identification of mechanisms involved in nutrient transfer, metabolic pathways induced by single and multiple stresses, physiological and eco-physiological mechanisms resulting in improved tolerance. However, cooperation between host plants and AM fungi is often related to the specificity of symbiotic partners, the environmental conditions and the availability of resources. In this study, the impact of two AM fungal species (Funneliformis mosseae and Rhizophagus intraradices) on the water stress tolerance of a commercial tomato cultivar (San Marzano nano) has been evaluated in pots. Biometric and eco-physiological parameters have been recorded and gene expression analyses in tomato roots have been focused on plant and fungal genes involved in inorganic phosphate (Pi) uptake and transport. R. intraradices, which resulted to be more efficient than F. mosseae to improve physiological performances, was selected to assess the role of AM symbiosis on tomato plants subjected to combined stresses (moderate water stress and aphid infestation) in controlled conditions. A positive effect on the tomato indirect defense toward aphids in terms of enhanced attraction of their natural enemies was observed, in agreement with the characterization of volatile organic compound (VOC) released. In conclusion, our results offer new insights for understanding the molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the tolerance toward water deficit as mediated by a specific AM fungus. Moreover, they open new perspectives for the exploitation of AM symbiosis to enhance crop tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses in a scenario of global change.

Si tratta di processi in cui attori istituzionali, insieme a cittadini e portatori d'interesse cooperano per l'individuazione e la risoluzione di problemi condivisi, all'interno di un setting di concertazione predefinito. Tali pratiche, tra cui annoveriamo il profilo di comunità, si fondano sulla possibilità e la capacità dei singoli e della comunità di reperire, attivare e mettere in circolo risorse (formali e informali) per concorrere al benessere collettivo.

Structural and relationships changes involving the parental and conjugal axes represent alterations that have challenged the traditional families’ model of a married heterosexual couples and biological children. This article shows the data collected during a fact-finding survey realized between 30 partners of same-sex couples with children and 30 partners of heterosexual couples with children recruited in Sicily. Participants were offered a protocol of instruments for the measurements of perceived conjugal and familiar self-efficacy, the parenting style, and the self-perception of the dynamics in the same-sex parenting in relationship with school institution (ad hoc questionnaire). The aim of this study was to obtain relevant information for a better understanding of same-sex co-parenting within intimate relationships and in the self-perception of itself in the broader social relations. These data reflects the trend of the partners - heterosexual and homosexual- to couples’ flexibility and adaptation, a positive attitude of homosexual parents in social relations that also involves heterosexuals, but it is not minimized the possibility of social aggressive behaviors that may be addressed to the offspring. Homosexual couples detect, in particular, poor preparation of the school to open didactic paths toward the new family scenarios, the differences (gender, ethnic ...), as well as on the education for the respect of human rights. In Italy, in fact, there is still a negative attitude towards homosexuality, and educational programs can deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices regarding homosexual parenting couples with important psychological and social implications.

In Italy, the number of adopted school-age children is increasing. According to Commission of Intercountry Adoption (2013), 3106 children were adopted , 47.5% of them are between 5 and 9 years old. The present action-research aims to explore the spread of good approaches in schools in terms of welcoming of adopted children. For this purpose 268 teachers of primary schools were involved to analyze the social representation about adopted children and their family. The results show a semplified vision of the adoptive family, which is described as heroic family or, on the contrary, as an a family with difficulty.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare myocardial scars depicted by computed tomography (CT) with electrical features from electro-anatomic mapping (EAM), assessing the potential role of CT integration in ventricular tachycardia (VT) and radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) procedures. BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, and no current therapy is ideal for control of this condition. Experimental studies suggest that angiotensin II-receptor blockers (ARBs) can influence atrial remodeling, and some clinical studies suggest that they may prevent atrial fibrillation. METHODS: We conducted a large, randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial to test whether the ARB valsartan could reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. We enrolled patients who were in sinus rhythm but had had either two or more documented episodes of atrial fibrillation in the previous 6 months or successful cardioversion for atrial fibrillation in the previous 2 weeks. To be eligible, patients also had to have underlying cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or left atrial enlargement. Patients were randomly assigned to receive valsartan or placebo. The two primary end points were the time to a first recurrence of atrial fibrillation and the proportion of patients who had more than one recurrence of atrial fibrillation over the course of 1 year. RESULTS: A total of 1442 patients were enrolled in the study. Atrial fibrillation recurred in 371 of the 722 patients (51.4%) in the valsartan group, as compared with 375 of 720 (52.1%) in the placebo group (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.97; 96% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.14; P = 0.73). More than one episode of atrial fibrillation occurred in 194 of 722 patients (26.9%) in the valsartan group and in 201 of 720 (27.9%) in the placebo group (adjusted odds ratio, 0.89; 99% CI, 0.64 to 1.23; P = 0.34). The results were similar in all predefined subgroups of patients, including those who were not receiving angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with valsartan was not associated with a reduction in the incidence of recurrent atrial fibrillation. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00376272.) Background— Moderate, regular alcohol consumption is generally associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events but data in patients with chronic heart failure are scarce. We evaluated the relations between wine consumption, health status, circulating biomarkers, and clinical outcomes in a large Italian population of patients with chronic heart failure enrolled in a multicenter clinical trial. Methods and Results— A brief questionnaire on dietary habits was administered at baseline to 6973 patients enrolled in the Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell’Insufficienza Cardiaca-Heart Failure (GISSI-HF) trial. The relations between wine consumption, fatal and nonfatal clinical end points, quality of life, symptoms of depression, and circulating biomarkers of cardiac function and inflammation (in subsets of patients) were evaluated with simple and multivariable-adjusted statistical models. Almost 56% of the patients reported drinking at least 1 glass of wine per day. After adjustment, clinical outcomes were not significantly different in the predefined 4 groups of wine consumption. However, patients with more frequent wine consumption had a significantly better perception of health status (Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire score, adjusted P P =0.01), and lower plasma levels of biomarkers of vascular inflammation (osteoprotegerin and C-terminal proendothelin-1, adjusted P P =0.01) after adjusting for possible confounders. Conclusions— We show for the first time in a large cohort of patients with chronic heart failure that moderate wine consumption is associated with a better perceived and objective health status, lower prevalence of depression, and less vascular inflammation, but does not translate into more favorable clinical 4-year outcomes. Gene therapy may provide a cure for hemophilia and overcome the limitations of protein replacement therapy. Increasing the potency of gene transfer vectors may allow to improve their therapeutic index, as lower doses can be administered to achieve therapeutic benefit, reducing toxicity of in vivo administration. Here we generated codon-usage optimized and hyper-functional factor IX (FIX) transgenes carrying a R338L amino acid substitution, previously associated with clotting hyperactivity and thrombophilia. We delivered these transgenes to hemophilia B mice by hepatocyte-targeted integration-competent and -defective lentiviral vectors. The hyper-functional FIX transgenes increased FIX activity reconstituted in the plasma without detectable adverse effects, allowing correction of the disease phenotype at lower vector doses and resulting in improved hemostasis in vivo. The combined effect of codon optimization with the hyper-activating FIX-R338L mutation resulted in a robust 15-fold gain in potency and therefore provides a promising strategy to improve the efficacy, feasibility and safety of hemophilia gene therapy.

International audience; La deuxième conférence internationale Iasi (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer), qui s'est tenue à Sévrier (Haute-Savoie) du 24 au 29 janvier 2010, a rassemblé 150 scientifiques de tous horizons pour faire le point sur l'instrument Iasi, le traitement des données, les résultats de son exploitation, trois ans après sa mise en service, et pour envisager les suites du programme. Dans cet article, on présente l'instrument monté sur les trois satellites Metop d'Eumetsat qui se succéderont jusqu'en 2020.On illustre succinctement les extraordinaires performances de cet instrument devenu référence pour l'interétalonnage de capteurs infrarouges. Après un rappel sur l'organisation du traitement des données, les perspectives à court et moyen termes sont mises en lumière. La partie principale traite des résultats les plus récents exposés à la conférence dans les différents domaines d'application de Iasi : la prévision numérique, l'étude de la composition atmosphérique, les applications opérationnelles de la chimie atmosphérique et le suivi du changement climatique. Le dernier paragraphe est consacré au futur avec les évolutions attendues des produits et les perspectives de l'après Iasi avec le sondeur infrarouge sur Météosat troisième génération et le sondeur Iasi nouvelle génération.

Direct solar irradiance and IR atmospheric radiance have been measured during different measurements campaigns, conducted in three mountain sites in Italy, far from anthropogenic sources. Direct solar irradiance has been measured by a high resolution (1.5 nm) AVANTES radiometer, working in the spectral range 400 nm-900 nm, while down welling IR sky radiance measurements has been measured by an MR100 BOMEM Fourier Transform Spectrometer covering the spectral ranges 500 cm-1-5000 cm-1 and 1 cm-1 of resolution. At least two Radiosonde launches per day furnished temperature and water vapour profiles. The instruments were located on a mobile laboratory, specifically projected to host them. The parameters obtained from direct solar irradiance are Aerosol Optical Depth, Angstrom parameters and Aerosol Size Distributions retrieval, while from IR data water vapour and temperature profiles have been retrieved. Different orographic characteristics and different air-masses circulation on the measurement sites influenced Aerosol Optical Depth values and variation. Infrared radiances inversion allows the water vapour content retrieval and a correlation between aerosol effective radii and water vapour content has been looked for.

Ground-based Fourier Transform Spectrometer observations in the infrared, acquired during the Italian phase of the EAQUATE campaign, have been considered in this study and compared to calculations. Synthetic spectral radiances have been obtained using the 2000 and 2004 releases and the 2006 upgrade of HITRAN spectral databases. It has been found that synthetic radiance computations fit the data quite well, even though the goodness of the fit depends on the spectral database. Differences in the spectral residual behaviour appear to be mostly localized in the long-wave side of the Earth emission spectrum, i.e. in the spectral region 520-610 cm(-1), which is dominated by the water vapour rotational absorption band. In this range, computation performed with the latest updates provides almost the same results as those of HITRAN2000, while HITRAN2004 shows a mixed behaviour - better than the first two in a large region of the spectral range, but worse at very few specific wave numbers. Overall, HITRAN2006 yields the highest consistency with the observations. No sensitive differences appear at higher wave numbers.

The physical forward/inverse scheme phi-IASI has been applied to the retrieval of atmospheric vertical profiles of temperature, water vapour and ozone by inverting high spectral infrared observations recorded by the NAST-I Fourier Transform Spectrometer. For the retrieval exercise we have used clear-sky spectra recorded over the sea surface on the night of 9-10 September 2004, during the Italian phase of the EAQUATE field campaign. During the campaign NAST-I flew on board the NASA Proteus aircraft at an altitude of 15 km. Retrievals have been compared to radiosonde observations, profiles from the ECMWF analysis and AIRS level 2 products. While providing a basis for the validation of the phi-IASI inversion scheme, the retrieval exercise has also demonstrated (i) the NAST-I ability to accurately detect H2O fine-scale vertical features, and (ii) the good quality of the temperature and water vapour profiles from the ECMWF analysis.

The problem of retrieving atmospheric ozone from satellite-based spectrally resolved radiance in the 9:6 mm O3-absorption band has been addressed in this paper. Different tools, statistical and physical, have been implemented and intercompared and their ability to retrieve total columnar ozone has been checked by further comparison with satellite UV sensors. The study has been based on a suitable set of interferometric monitoring of greenhouse gases, complemented with a set of co-located total columnar ozone observations from total ozone mapping spectrometer.

In this work a soft computing approach, based on a neural network methodology, is presented, aimed to retrieve atmospheric parameters of meteorological interest such as temperature, water vapour and ozone profiles from high resolution infrared sensor spectra. Specific neural network has been developed on basis of the specifications of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The performance of the neural network based inversion methodology has been evaluated by considering an inversion case in which test cases are retrieved. Given the nature of available data, a preliminary elaboration of spectra by means of principal component analysis has made, and an online adaptive pruning of the network during training is performed. The adaptive pruning is based on a bi-local technique and allows to optimize the network size and architecture.

It is shown that IMG (interferometric monitoring of greenhouse gases) spectra recorded over African and Arabian deserts clearly contain the fingerprint of quartz-rich soils. We illustrate how this spectral signature can be exploited to devise a suitable cloud-detection scheme to identify which infrared observations are affected by clouds. As a by-product, the scheme also allows one to identify the most likely underlying emitting surface type and provides a suitable first guess for the surface emissivity to be used, e.g., for the retrieval of geophysical parameters from high-spectral-resolution infrared radiance from space. The analysis has focused on African deserts because of their intrinsic relevance to numerical weather prediction and Earth's climate. Desert areas, like oceans, are poorly covered by the world meteorological radiosonde network and therefore are geographical regions for which the global coverage capability of satellites soundings is expected to provide better initializations for numerical weather prediction than are now available. Application of the cloud-detection scheme to IMG spectra has been considered, which demonstrates the good performance of the method.
