Straipsnyje siekiama apibrėžti kriterijus, pagal kuriuos iš senosios pasaulėžiūros išskiriami religijos, mitologijos ir kitų visuomeninės sąmonės formų reiškiniai. Teigiama, kad pirmykštė mitologinė pasaulėžiūra buvo nediferencijuota, sinkretinė, joje dominavo antropomorfinis pažinimo būdas bei vaisingumo idėja. Seniausios vaisingumo idėjos, realizuojamos magiškais veiksmais, nebuvo susijusios su religija. Magija, kaip organiška mitologinės pasaulėžiūros dalis, nelaikytina pirmykštės religijos forma, ji glaudžiai susijusi su pirmykščiu deterministiniu galvojimo būdu. Tris religijos sudėtine dalis – tikėjimą antgamtiškumu, kultą, religinę bendruomenę – galima aptikti tik irstančios pirmykštės bendruomenės ir besiformuojančios klasinės visuomenės stadijoje. Senojoje lietuvių religijoje reikia skirti du sluoksnius: oficialiąją kunigaikščių religiją (žynių veiklos rezultatas) nuo liaudies religijos. Pastarojoje buvo daugiau senosios mitologijos ir pirmykštės pasaulėžiūros liekanų. Palaipsniui stiprėjant krikščionybei, liaudyje įsigalėjo religinis sinkretizmas (krikščionybės ir senųjų tikėjimų samplaika), iš kurio senąją religiją galima atsekti tik pagal tikėjimus.

Having discussed, more or less consistently (even if not quite exhaustively), the main transformations of the myth of the founding of Vilnius in the writings of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, an attempt could be made to generalize this overview. We have tried to substantiate a hypothesis according to which the myth was created in Gediminas’ court. It should be related to the ruler’s desire to highlight the sacral aspect of the founding of a new capital and to confirm the legality of the new formation, which was to replace the old sacred site. It also reflects identity-consolidating values and aims of the dynamic "great pagan power", which echoed those of Gediminas’ diplomatic activities. It is worth noting that the howl of the iron-clad wolf heralds the glory not of the monarch, but of his capital. The early modern period asks for a new relation with the myth. This relation is brought about by the context of Christianity and by the growing significance of rational thinking. A myth mutates when it loses the function of independent and universal narrative in various autonomous discourses. It becomes either a plausible story, or its opposite – a fairy-tale. Each of these forms reflect a new actual "Sitz im Leben" (setting in life) and is applicable for the expression of new values. However, the Catholic and the Protestant contexts do not withdraw the aspiration of the myth to link the founding of the new capital with a sacral sanction. The specific pagan elements (e.g., the role of Lizdeika) being diminished, the assessment, from the Christian point of view, of religious legitimacy or validity of the ruler’s vision and its interpretation is eschewed. Stryjkowski’s and Kojalavičius’ historicized narratives link the fame of Vilnius with civic valour and with the transformation of the capital into a typical European city, which becomes a paradigmatic interpretation of the dream. A myth which becomes a fairy-tale and no longer claims the status of an authoritative narrative that shapes the integrity of a political community is labile, because not only its characters but also its central message can change according to the needs of the narrators and the addressees. Rhetoric adaptations of the myth reflect fragmentation of the public life and erosion of solid political values. An example of how, in the eighteenth century, the myth of the founding of Vilnius totally loses its authentic place in the hierarchy of narratives that unite the community is Grzybowski’s rhetoric deconstruction, which not only transforms the myth into a fairy-tale, but also imparts a contrary message to it. The topicality of the myth in the perspective of the Christian religion and rational thinking is eventually resolved by essential secularization of the narrative and by attributing the founding of the new capital to Gediminas’ political acumen. In this way the ruler’s figure as mythically legitimising and following the logic of the myth in its actions, is rejected.

Šis straipsnis yra pirmas bandymas nuosekliai ir analitiškai peržvelgti visą turimą medžiagą, liudijančią apie sudėtingą senosios lietuvių religijos fenomeną, šaltiniuose vadinamą „Deivės“. Straipsnyje bandoma skelbtą bei archyvinę medžiagą ne tik sutelkti, bet ir pateikti šio fenomeno interpretaciją, remiantis šaltinių kritikos, filologinės hermeneutikos ir religijų istorijos bei fenomenologijos prielaidomis. Deivės čia suvokiamos ne kaip religinės ar pasaulėžiūrinės sistemos konstruktas, bet kaip XVI–XVII valstietiško pasaulėvaizdžio dėmuo. Apibendrinus šaltinių duomenis galima teigti, kad deivės – tai moterų vadovaujamas kultas, iš kurio vyrai nėra išskiriami. Nors Deivių garbinimu rūpinasi moterys, jame dalyvauja ir šeimos tėvas, šeimos motina mirdama Deives patiki savo dukterims. Daugelis senųjų reliktinių aukojimų turi bendruomeninį pobūdį. Kaimas susirenka į aukojimo vaišes dažniausiai lūžiniais metų momentais. Nesunkiai pastebimi chtoniniai ir vaisingumo motyvai: kiaulė, juodas paršelis, tamsūs apeiginiai drabužiai. Atskiro dėmesio verti galimi lunariniai motyvai. Treji devyneri aukojamos duonos gabalėliai gali būti siejami su mėnulio kultu. Deivių ambivalencija šaltiniuose atskleista itin ryškiai – jų aukurai yra sacrum telkiniai, itin pavojingi nepašvęstiesiems, jos baudžia neatliekančius apeigų, jos gali būti piktos ir kenkėjiškos be matomos priežasties, todėl reikalingos maldymo. Paplitęs ir svarbus Deivių kultas vėliau sunyko ir dingo iš liaudies atminties bei papročių. The present article is the first attempt to consistently and analytically review all available material testifying of the complex phenomenon of ancient Lithuanian religion, which is referred to as the 'Goddesses' in the sources. The article attempts not only to concentrate the published and archive material, but also to present an interpretation of this phenomenon based on the presumptions of criticism, philological hermeneutics and history and phenomenology of religion provided in the sources. Here the Goddesses are perceived not as a construct of religious or worldview system, but as a component of the peasant world perception in the 16th - 17th c. Having generalised the data of the sources, it may be stated that the Goddesses are a cult lead by women, from which the men are not excluded. Although women take care of the worship of the Goddesses, the father of the family also participates, the mother of the family at her death entrusts the worship of Goddesses to her daughters. Many old relict sacrifices are of communal nature. A village community usually gathers to a sacrificial feast at the breaking points of the year. Chthonic and fertility motifs are easy to note: a pig, a black piglet, dark ceremonial clothes. Lunar motifs are worthy of individual attention. Three nines of sacrificed bread pieces may be associated with the cult of the moon. The ambivalence of the Goddesses is revealed especially clearly in the sources: their altars are sacrum concentrations very dangerous to the non-consecrated; they punish those who do not perform the rites, they may be vicious and malicious without an apparent reason and therefore, require soothing. The widespread and important cult of the Goddesses has diminished and disappeared from the memory and customs of the people.

Straipsnyje, pasitelkus tikslinę duomenų atranką, nagrinėjamas senosios ikikrikščioniškos lietuvių religijos vaizdavimas internete. Aiškinamasi, kiek ir kokio pobūdžio informacijos apie senąją lietuvių religiją galima rasti internete bendrai bei 2008-2010 m. internetiniuose naujienų portaluose atskirai. Nagrinėjama, kokie senąją lietuvių religiją nusakantys terminai internete ir internetinėje žiniasklaidoje dažniausiai vartojami, analizuojama, kokiame kontekste, kokiose pagrindinėse siužetinėse linijose kalbama apie senąją lietuvių religiją ir mitologiją. Naudojami duomenų rinkimo ir analizės metodai: turinio analizė, aprašomasis ir interpretacinis metodai. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo, jog apie senąją ikikrikščionišką lietuvių religiją populiaru kalbėti informaciniuose tinklapiuose, mokslinius darbus pristatančiuose, parduodančiuose portaluose, skirtingo pobūdžio forumuose, jaunimo bloguose. Internetinių naujienų portalai nepasižymi straipsnių, tiesiogiai nagrinėjančių senosios lietuvių religijos temą, gausa, atitinkama terminija dažniausiai tik paminima pristatant kitas temas. The article presents the analysis of the information concerning the ancient pre-Christian Lithuanian religion and mythology that is found in the internet. Authors seek to examine the general amount of the information and to study its character in the internet, in common as well as in the most popular internet media separately (from 2008 to 2010). The research pursues to find out the most popular terms that define the ancient Lithuanian religion in the internet and to explore the context of the object. The methods of the content analysis as well as the description and the interpretation are used. It is supposed that the research will help to clarify the construct of the religion that is presented for the internet users. The results show that Lithuanian ancient religion is usually discussed in information portals, commercial portals (selling scientific papers), different forums and blogs of young people. However, portals of internet mass-media do not make a note of abundance concerning the ancient Lithuanian religion. The appropriate terminology usually appears in the context of different topics.

Recenzijoje aptariama Algimanto Bučio studija „Seniausioji lietuvių literatūra. Mindaugo epocha“, kurioje nauju rakursu siekiama pažvelgti į XIII a. sakralinius tekstus, priklausančius krikščionims stačiatikiams ir juose ieškoti seniausios lietuvių literatūros pradžios. Pagrindinio klausimo kėlimas – ar turime seniausiąją lietuvių literatūrą, datuojamą XIII a. – tekstų vertimai (iš senosios slavų kalbos), tekstų rekonstrukcijos ir interpretacijos, nuorodos į senosios lietuvių raštijos tyrinėtojus (J.Lebedį ir A. Jovaišą), taip pat ir į slavistiką, sudaro studijos filologinį pamatą, turintį bendrumų su kitomis humanistikos sritimis (istorija, religijotyra, mentaliteto istorija). Pasakojimo sklaida labiau romaninė, negu akademinė. Pagrindinis studijos bruožas – seniausios lietuvių raštijos lauko išplėtimas, į kurį Bučys įtraukia ir „Sovijaus mito“ prierašą – neigiamai tekstą vertinančią vienuolio raštininko reakciją, Gedimino laiškus, Mindaugo raštus, nežinomo autoriaus „Dievo Išrinktojo Vaišvilko gyvenimą“. Bučio studijoje vis grįžtama prie senovinės Baltijos kraštų tikybos. Naujas atvartas aptariamame veikale – emigracijos sąvokos ir jos ankstyviausio laiko suaktualinimas, pirmųjų lietuvių kilmės šventųjų pasirodymas. Autorius pagrįstai kvestionuoja Lietuvos istoriografijoje įsigalėjusią tradiciją analizuoti viduramžių pagonybės ir krikščionybės priešpriešą monoparadigmiškai, laikantis išankstinio neigiamo požiūrio į pagonybę ir nenurodant dviejų kelių į anuometinį krikščionijos pasaulį. Pradėjus Mindaugu ir jo epocha, knyga baigiama sociokultūrine dabarties interpretacija. The review discusses the study “Seniausioji Lietuvių Literatūra. Mindaugo Epocha” of Algimantas Bučys, which seeks to overview sacral texts of Christian Orthodoxies of the 13th century from a new perspective, and to find the origins of the ancient Lithuanian literature therein. The philological foundation of the study, which has common aspects with other fields of humanities (history, religious studies, history of mentality), is the main question “were there any Lithuanian literature dated to the 13th c.”, also translations of texts (from ancient Slavonic), reconstruction and interpretations of texts, references to the explorers of ancient Lithuanian writing (J. Lebedys and A. Jovaiša), and references to Slavonic issues. The development of the story is more like that of a novel rather than the academic style. The key feature of the study – expansion of the ancient Lithuanian writing sphere, which included postscript of “Sovijaus Mitas” by Bučys – a negative reaction of a monk-writer, letters of Gediminas, letters of Mindaugas, and a work of unknown author “Dievo Išrinktojo Vaišvilko gyvenimas”. In Bučys study steps back to ancient religion of the Baltic regions are taken over and over. New page in the discussed study – topicality of the concept of emigration and its earliest period, the appearance of first saints of Lithuanian origin. The author reasonably questions the tradition to analyse antithesis of Paganism of the Middle Ages and the Christianity in monoparadigmic method, which is established in Lithuanian historiography, holding a predetermined negative opinion to Paganism and not mentioning two ways to the world of Christianity of that time. Beginning with Mindaugas and his era, the book is finished by interpretation of contemporary socio-culture.

Straipsnyje bandoma atsakyti į klausimą, kiek senosios lietuvių religijos aukščiausiosios dievybės atitinka indoeuropiečių religijoms būdingas suverenių dievų sampratas. Siūlomos kai kurių XIII a. šaltiniuose užrašytų lietuviškų dievavardžių, pirmiausia Andajo ir Perkūno, rekonstrukcijos ir etimologijos. Iš jų bei kitų negausių žinių gauta informacija gretinama su Žoržo Diumezilio (Georges Dumézil) tyrinėjimų rezultatais. Pateikiama argumentų lietuvių dievus, iš šaltinių žinomus Andojo ir Perkūno vardais, sudarant dvejybę, atitinkančią kitų indoeuropiečių religijų „Mitros–Varunos“ tipo suverenių dievybių poras. The article attempts to answer the question - to what extent the concepts of the highest deities of archaic Lithuanian religion relate to the concepts of sovereign deities in Indo-European religions. The study suggests the reconstructions and etymologies of some of the names of archaic Lithuanian deities, mentioned in XIII c. sources. The findings of this research and additional information are compared with the findings of the study of Georges Dumézil. It is argued, that Lithuanian deities, known by the names Andojas and Perkūnas, to be considered as twoness, which parallels "Mitra-Varuna" types of Indo-European pairs of sacral deities.

Straipsnyje bandoma atkreipti dėmesį į kai kuriuos religinius egzistencinius momentus lietuvių tradicijoje, pasitelkiant ir prūsų bei kitų gretimų tautų religinius duomenis. Panaudojant istorinių šaltinių atskirus fragmentus bandoma įžiūrėti tam tikrą visuminę prasmę, pagoniškosios tikybos ir protėvių autoriteto įtaką visam senųjų lietuvių mentalitetui. Nors baltų genčių pasaulis buvo nevienalytis, už jo gentinio, kalbinio ir dialektinio margumo, skirtingų tradicijų, istorijų ir interesų slypi kažkokia jėga, konsoliduojanti baltų kultūrinį masyvą, padedanti atlaikyti egzistencinius ir karinius smūgius. Daug vietos skiriama burtų apeigų nagrinėjimui, parodant jų lemtingą reikšmę senovės baltų pasaulėžiūrai. Manytina, kad lenkų metraštininko Dlugošo teiginys apie burtininkavimą kaip vieną esminių lietuvių būdo bruožų, nebuvo laužtas iš piršto. Ypatingą reikšmę turėjo „kariniai“ burtai, t. y. susiję su karo žygiais. Remdamasis atskirais šaltinių pasakojimais autorius bando rekonstruoti senovės lietuvių karo ritualą. Išskiriamos jo 5 sudėtinės etapinės dalys: didžiūnų puota, kurioje vadas paskelbia žygio pradžią; karių priesaika rikiuotėje; žygio pašventinimas; žygis ir antpuolis; grobio aukojimas kaip karo žygio ritualo užbaigimas ir atsidėkojimas dievams. Tai nebuvo prietarai, o vieninga sistema, kuri padėdavo žmogui įgyti religinę ir psichologinę atramą bei pusiausvyrą. The article aims to bring attention to some religious existential episodes in Lithuanian tradition through Prussian and adjacent nations religious data. Holistic meaning and the influence of pagan religion and ancestries' authority for the entire ancient Lithuanians mentality is being examined through different fragments of historical resources. Although Baltic tribe's world was heterogenous, behind its tribal, linguistic and dialectal diversity, different traditions, histories and interests lied a power, which consolidated cultural Baltic array and helped to survive existential and military events. Magic rituals, which have fatal meaning to the worldview of ancient Baltic people, are closely examined. It is assumed, that a claim that practise of spiritism was one of the substantial Lithuanian's features, like polish annalist Długosz proposed, was not a lie. "Military" spells (related to military campaigns) were of particular importance. The author of the article tries to restore ancient Lithuanian's war ritual through different sources. 5 parts of the ritual were distinguished: grandee's feast, when the leader announces that the military campaign starts; warrior's oath while in line; campaign's sanctification; campaign and onslaught; the spoils' sacrifice to mark the end of the military campaign and gratitude to Gods. It was a unified system, not a superstition, which helped people to be religiously and psychologically stable.
