While Open Access (OA) is growing, many publications remain behind a paywall. This limits the impact of research and entrenches global inequalities by restricting access to knowledge to those that can afford it. Many journal policies allow researchers to make a version of their publication openly accessible through self-archiving in a repository, sometimes after an embargo period (green OA). Unpaywall and Shareyourpaper are open tools that help users find OA articles and support authors to legally self-archive their papers, respectively. This study leveraged these tools to assess the potential of green OA to increase discoverability in a cohort of clinical trial results publications from German university medical centers. Of the 1,897 publications in this cohort, 46% (n=871/1,897, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 44% to 48%) were not openly accessible via a journal or a repository. Of these, 85% (n=736/871, 95% CI 82% to 87%) had a permission to self-archive the accepted or published version in an institutional repository. Thus, most of the closed-access clinical trial results in this cohort could be made openly accessible, in line with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. In addition to providing further evidence of the unrealized potential of green OA, this study demonstrates the use of open tools to obtain actionable information on self-archiving at scale, and empowers efforts to increase science discoverability.

This poster introduces the efficient set of research support services available in University of Jyväskylä’s (JYU) Open Science Centre (OSC). The set includes several essential services for researchers to help them execute an open and responsible research process. The continuous improvement of research support services has led to an interlinked, integrated and harmonious set of technical solutions, processes and workflows which meet the needs of researchers and help them implement open science and FAIR policies in practice. They also save time and enable better working processes for the researchers but also for the experts conducting these services. The poster describes two main services which are interlinked and which both aim to make processes and workflows effortless. One of the main services is when metadata from research information system Converis is utilized using API in the self-archiving process of research articles to the institutional repository. OSC’s experts record the publication metadata on behalf of researchers and the same metadata of the publications is used in the self-archiving process. Also, data harvesting is used to get notification of new publications of researchers affiliated to JYU. Often the researchers don’t even have to inform OSC when their new publication is out. This effortless process combines two different systems (CRIS and institutional repository) and connects workflows regarding them. The poster also introduces a dynamic research data management tool which enables a fluent data management process. The goal of the development of this tool has been to free the researchers of having to learn the use of several different systems. The tool helps the researchers to track the handling process of their data and guides through all the necessary phases of the data management process. Again, the data once recorded is being utilized in other systems and in other phases of the whole process. Both the tool and the data management process it enables are integrated to other systems which are needed for example in storing and sharing the research data.

Das Material dokumentiert einen 90-minütigen Workshop bei den Open-Access-Tagen 2022. Die Inhalte wurden im Workshop in Kleingruppen erarbeitet: An fünf Tischen diskutierten die Teilnehmer*innen jeweils ca. zehn Minuten die gleiche Fragen (insgesamt gab es fünf Fragen) und notierten Ideen & Lösungsansätze, welche nach jeder Runde im Plenum kurz vorgetragen und kurz diskutiert wurden. Die Fragen stammten von den Teilnehmenden selbst – bei der Anmeldung zum Workshop waren sie gefragt worden: “Welche Frage im Alltagsgeschäft der Zweitveröffentlichungen wollten Sie schon immer mal an die Community stellen?” Die so eingereichten Fragen wurden im Vorfeld durch die Workshopkoordinator*innen thematisch geclustert (1. Motivation/Argumentation, 2. Services & Tools, 3. Metadaten, 4. Postprints, 5. Rechtliches). Einige Fragen konnten aus Zeitgründen nicht im Workshop behandelt werden; sind der Vollständigkeit halber auch dokumentiert.

Owing to the prevailing ‘unfair’ digital divide, libraries worldwide are unable to build and manage institutional repositories for preserving and sharing the research output of academia. This paper evaluates and demonstrates how libraries can practically harness the completely free SaaS service model based on public cloud deployment model infrastructure to fill this divide and achieve the larger goal of open science. The paper highlights the process and steps of using Zenodo, a FREE and OPEN platform, powered by Invenio (Free Open-Source Software) RDM infrastructure, to establish a trusted repository with the provision of self-archiving. To test the KPIs and functionalities, a live online community ‘dlispu’ was built on the Zenodo platform and the archiving process was executed. The findings of the study reveal that libraries can easily adopt Green Open Access, thus strengthening the scholarly communication cycle without any upfront and subsequent cost. This immediately outweighs the limitations of the digital divide. The positive outcomes of the study pave the way for the libraries with resource insufficiencies in making research more findable, shareable, and reproducible, with confidence. The findings of the study also reveal that the Zenodo repository is a OAI- PMH-compliant repository supporting metadata harvesting and interoperability.

Aim To question the efficacy of ‘gold’ open access to published articles. Background Open access is unrestricted access to academic, theoretical and research literature that is scholarly and peer-reviewed. Two models of open access exist: ‘gold’ and ‘green’. Gold open access provides everyone with access to articles during all stages of publication, with processing charges paid by the author(s). Green open access involves placing an already published article into a repository to provide unrestricted access, with processing charges incurred by the publisher. Data sources This is a discussion paper. Review methods An exploration of the relative benefits and drawbacks of the ‘gold’ and ‘green’ open access systems. Discussion Green open access is a more economic and efficient means of granting open access to scholarly literature but a large number of researchers select gold open access journals as their first choices for manuscript submissions. This paper questions the efficacy of gold open access models and presents an examination of green open access models to encourage nurse researchers to consider this approach. Conclusion In the current academic environment, with increased pressures to publish and low funding success rates, it is difficult to understand why gold open access still exists. Green open access enhances the visibility of an academic’s work, as increased downloads of articles tend to lead to increased citations. Implications for research/practice Green open access is the cheaper option, as well as the most beneficial choice, for universities that want to provide unrestricted access to all literature at minimal risk. The affordances of repositories for scientific information are emphasized in various international and national governmental and research financing documents. However, the researchers do not upload their full-text publications into the repositories as intensively as it is expected. The aim of the paper is to establish which factors and to what extent affect the intention of Lithuanian researchers to use open access repositories as a publication channel. The model of the theory of planned behaviour was employed to better understand the intentions of Lithuanian researchers to deposit their publications to research repositories. A representative questionnaire survey was carried out to collect the data. The 545 respondents of the survey were the Lithuanian researchers who have a doctoral degree and work at Lithuanian state universities or state research institutes. The obtained data were analysed using statistical analysis (correlation). The connections between intention to submit publications to open access repositories and attitudes, perceived norm, perceived control, past open access publishing behaviour, occupational and demographic characteristics were analysed. The study has identified the factors affecting the open access publishing behaviour of Lithuanian researchers and the strength of their influence with regard to it. It was found that the most significant factors which affect Lithuanian researchers’ intention to submit their publications to repositories are perceived norm, perceived control and past open access publishing behaviour. The age and seniority of researchers are also significant. Lithuanian researchers differ from the general context of open access publishing behaviour in that the influence of norms on the intention to submit publications to open access repositories is greater than that of researchers in other countries, and the attitudes, although positive, are less significant. The remaining factors are affecting their publishing behaviour similarly as in the studies from other countries. Lithuanian researchers representing social sciences and humanities are slightly more likely to submit publications to the repositories than researchers representing the natural science, medicine and technology.

The article tries to highlight the evolution and conceptual framework of institutional repositories and their impact on the academic and scholarly circles in terms of better visibility, wider audience and earlier communication of research. The characteristics associated with the institutional repositories are also highlighted, which makes them stand out from the crowd in the family of open access scholarly platforms. The study is based on the examination and evaluation of the articles published across various peer-reviewed journals showcasing numerous dimensions of institutional repositories, ranging from their evolution to open scholarly acceptance. A preliminary search on institutional repositories was carried through two well-renowned indexing/abstracting databases of peer-reviewed literature, Clarivate Analytic’s, Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. Search terms like institutional repositories, institutional research output, open access repositories, green open access, open access, open access publishing, open access initiatives, digital libraries, directory of open access repositories, open DOAR and scholarly communication were run across the databases for article retrieval, and the relevant studies were extracted accordingly. To make the study more comprehensive and current, the studies citing the retrieved articles were also consulted. The study reveals that the benefits associated with institutional repositories are manifold. They recounter users with the information which was otherwise unavailable due to the reasons ranging from the non-availability of supplementary information (like unpublished reports and working papers, multimedia and audiovisual items, learning objects, other special item types, bibliographic references, datasets, lecture notes and so forth) to the paywall/subscription models adopted by commercial channels of scholarly communication. Furthermore, the social, research and technological factors tend to be the main motivating factors for their wider acceptance by the scholarly community at global, national, organizational, and individual levels. They enhance the preservation of institutional research output with increased viewership and prestige apart from achieving a potential research impact. They, in a real sense, have abrogated the unilateral assault orchestrated by the commercial publishers on the author community by democratizing their scholarly voices via open and barrierless scholarly platforms. They are the future of the academic output of an institution/author as they perform successfully within the constitutional boundaries of scholarly and academic publishing, thus safeguarding the rights and claims of every academic actor. Given the importance of institutional repositories for a more democratic, barrierless and impactful information communication, they are for sure going beyond various scholarly circles by breaking the traditional and rigid walls of scholarly endeavours. The study presents a useful overview of the progression of the institutional repositories, their intended purpose and how they serve to fill the gaps in scholarly publishing and meet the needs of the wider academic community. The article summarizes in one place a concise overview of the use and impact of institutional repositories. The study is also an eye-opener for scholars interested in the research in the field of institutional repositories.

(1) Background: The 2002 Budapest Open Access Initiative recommended the self-archiving of scientific articles in open repositories, which has been described as the “green road” to open access. Twenty years later, only one part of the researchers deposits their publications in open repositories; moreover, one part of the repositories’ content is not based on self-archived deposits but on mediated nonfaculty contributions. The purpose of the paper is to provide more empirical evidence on this situation and to assess the impact on the future of the green road. (2) Methods: We analyzed the contributions to the French national HAL repository from more than 1000 laboratories affiliated with the ten most important French research universities, with a focus on 2020, representing 14,023 contributor accounts and 164,070 deposits. (3) Results: We identified seven different types of contributor accounts, including deposits from nonfaculty staff and import flows from other platforms. Mediated nonfaculty contributions (deposits by libraries, import of bibliographic records, migration from other platforms, etc.) account for at least 48% of the 2020 deposits. We also identified differences between institutions and disciplines. (4) Conclusions: Our empirical results reveal a transformation of open repositories from self-archiving and direct scientific communication towards research information management. Repositories like HAL are somewhere in the middle of the process. The paper describes data quality as the main issue and major challenge of this transformation.

Não recebi financiamento Research data repositories emerge as digital informational environments committed to the storage, management, access, and preservation of records from scientific research, increasingly stimulated by the development of Open Science. Despite the broad discussion involving research data, one wonders how the available guidelines support the author-indexer in filling in the subject metadata during the self-archiving process in research data repositories? Given this, the general objective of the research is to analyze the recommendations for the attribution of keywords by the author-indexer in guidelines of research data repositories of countries belonging to Ibero America that adopt self-archiving to contribute to the development of theoretical and operational studies dedicated to the subject metadata. Therefore, an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach is developed that combines bibliographic and documentary research. The latter is based on identifying and selecting repositories of Iberoamerican research data that adopt self-archiving, obtained from the Re3data tool. Twenty-six research data repositories were identified, whose guidelines and respective digital environments were analyzed using six indicators to construct analytical and comparative considerations. The results point to the lack of instructions for the attribution of keywords, even when the research data repositories have formalized guidelines, in addition to the lack of mention of the subject metadata and keywords, as well as clear instructions for the representation of the contents of the research data by the author-researcher. Most research data repositories recommend the use of documentary languages and validate the terms used by the authors-researchers. In conclusion, there is a worrying scenario regarding the attribution of keywords in self-archiving in Iberoamerican research data repositories, and complementary studies are opportune to propose guidelines regarding the subject metadata in these information systems. Os repositórios de dados de pesquisa surgem como ambientes informacionais digitais comprometidos com o armazenamento, gestão, acesso e preservação dos registros provenientes das pesquisas científicas, cada vez mais estimulados pelo desenvolvimento da Ciência Aberta. Apesar da ampla discussão envolvendo dados de pesquisa, questiona-se como as diretrizes disponibilizadas amparam o autor-indexador no preenchimento do metadado assunto durante o processo de autoarquivamento em repositórios de dados de pesquisa? Diante disso, o objetivo geral da pesquisa é analisar as recomendações para a atribuição de palavras-chave pelo autor-indexador em diretrizes de repositórios de dados de pesquisa de países integrantes da ibero-américa que adotam o autoarquivamento, no intuito de contribuir para o desenvolvimento de estudos teóricos e operacionais dedicados ao metadado assunto. Para tanto, desenvolve-se um estudo exploratório e descritivo com abordagem qualitativa que alia pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, esta última a partir da identificação e seleção de repositórios de dados de pesquisa ibero-americanos que adotam o autoarquivamento, obtido da ferramenta Re3data. Foram identificados 26 repositórios de dados de pesquisa, cujas diretrizes e respectivos ambientes digitais foram analisados por meio de seis indicadores, visando à construção de considerações analíticas e comparativas. Os resultados apontam para a falta de instruções para a atribuição de palavras-chave, mesmo quando os repositórios de dados de pesquisa possuem diretrizes formalizadas, além da falta de menção ao metadado assunto e palavras-chave, assim como instruções claras para a representação dos conteúdos dos dados de pesquisa pelo autor-pesquisador. A maior parte dos repositórios de dados de pesquisa recomendam o uso de linguagens documentárias, assim como realizam a validação dos termos empregados pelos autores-pesquisadores. Como conclusões, tem-se um cenário preocupante sobre a atribuição de palavras-chave na prática do autoarquivamento em repositórios de dados de pesquisa ibero-americanos, sendo oportunos estudos complementares que proponham orientações referentes ao metadado assunto nesses sistemas de informação.

Aim: to determine differences in openness and sharing of scientific papers. Methods: We have analysed scientific papers from the Croatian Scientific Bibliography (CROSBI) from University of Rijeka (Croatia) in 4 fields (2017–2019) on a sample of 210 papers. The SciMago Journal Rank (SJR) quartiles were used as a metric. We have checked the presence of the full text in open access in 3 types of repositories (Repository UNIRI-Dabar, ArXiv, CROSBI) and on social academic network ResearchGate. Tendency of self-archiving and sharing with regard to the field of science was investigated. All'interno del contesto operativo del CNR per la gestione della produzione scientifica, l'Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione "A. Faedo" (ISTI) ha messo in atto una serie di buone pratiche per favorire l'accesso aperto ai prodotti depositati dal proprio personale nell'archivio istituzionale "People". Quest'ultimo, infatti, al momento espone solo i metadati dei prodotti, non consentendo l'attuazione delle pratiche di Open Access e Open Science. Per questo motivo, l'istituto si è dotato di una propria policy Open Access, entrata in vigore a gennaio 2018. Il documento stabilisce che i metadati e una versione digitale di qualsiasi prodotto della ricerca devono essere depositati nell'archivio istituzionale CNR e resi disponibili mediante l'ISTI Open Portal (IOP). IOP è un gateway che, partendo dalla raccolta dei metadati dei prodotti in People, presenta i prodotti ISTI arricchendoli con informazioni aggiuntive (ad es. altre versioni depositate in repository terzi, link a dataset associati alla pubblicazione, metriche alternative/indicatori di impatto) provenienti da servizi e risorse di comunicazione accademica (ad es. OpenAIRE Research Graph, ScholeXplorer, Altmetric). Inoltre, IOP offre funzionalità di search & browse specifiche (per autore / laboratorio) oltre a grafici e statistiche che mostrano il trend della produzione scientifica nel corso del tempo. Il gateway è un'istanza di RepOSGate, un software open source offerto as-a-Service dall'ISTI per la realizzazione di gateway a-la IOP, capaci quindi di complementare le informazioni collezionate da sorgenti di metadati e permettere di implementare politiche Open Access basate sull'auto-archiviazione. Tale soluzione è stata adottata dall'ISPC. Il sistema, dunque, facilita la fruizione della produzione scientifica dell'istituto, migliorando la ricerca, la consultazione e l'accesso alle risorse. L'obiettivo della presentazione è quello di descrivere le caratteristiche e le funzionalità principali di IOP, fornendo informazioni sull'architettura di alto livello che sovrintende al sistema e sul flusso di lavoro che opera nel back-office. Inoltre, si descriverà l'esperienza maturata nell'implementazione della policy e le lessons learned.

Elle est le fruit de la combinaison de trois facteurs : des actions individuelles, une mobilisation des communautés professionnelles et des stratégies institutionnelles, en lien étroit avec l’affirmation progressive de la science ouverte comme mode d’organisation de la recherche. L’article présente un regard réflexif sur l’évolution de HAL, sur ses principales étapes et sur l’environnement qui l’a porté. Il s’attache à présenter les fondements scientifiques, techniques et documentaires de HAL mais aussi à exposer les usages émergents puis massifs de cette archive par la communauté scientifique. Il interroge également la configuration actuelle de HAL et son devenir. Un double point de vue est privilégié : HAL est appréhendé comme un dispositif technico-documentaire et comme un écosystème au sein duquel interagissent chercheurs, institutions et professionnels de l’information scientifique, chacun de ces acteurs ayant une stratégie propre. Regardless of multiple efforts carried out across many countries to disseminate the ideas and the practice of open science, most scholars in the early 2020s do not self-archive their research articles and do not publish research papers in preprint form. Having received no education and training on open science, researchers are often puzzled on what to do, in practice, to start reaping the benefits of open science. Universitätsbibliotheken bieten im Bereich Open Access ein breites, zielgruppenspezifisches Dienstleistungs- und Vermittlungskonzept an, das häufig Angebote für den Goldenen und den Grünen Weg und administrative Unterstützung umfasst. Ein Impulsvortrag präsentiert Beispiele für die konkrete Ausgestaltung von Zweitveröffentlichungsservices an verschiedenen Institutionen. Anschließend werden in Breakout-Rooms spezielle Themen weiter bearbeitet (u.a. Verlags-Kommunikation, Workflows, Tools, Metadaten in Repositorien). Dieser Workshop verfolgt zwei Ziele: Erstens gibt er Impulse und Anregungen, wie unterschiedliche Bibliotheken ihre Wissenschaftler*innen auf ihrem persönlichen Weg zur grünen Open-Access-Transformation begleiten können. Hybrid open access journals generally authorize self-archiving along with Author-pays model. Given the dependence of the Author-pays model on APCs paid by authors, it is expected to have a negative association with the free-of-charge Green model. By exploring a sample of 52,150 papers published in 47 Elsevier's hybrid journals, the study compares the OA models' citation performances to non-open access (NOA) model's and investigates the relationship between the quantities of their papers. Three OA groups are identified, including Green-only, APC-only and Green-APC. The OA papers show a citation advantage over the NOA articles, despite their lower number. The mixed APC-Green, gains the highest citation compared to the three other access models. However, the number of Green and APC-funded papers are revealed to have a negative association. Although, the combination of the Green and APC models magnifies the impact of OA papers, the inverse association between the quantities of their papers signifies that the lower number of the latter can be partially explained by the prevalence of the former. The results help academic librarians involved in advocating and managing OA to better understand authors' behaviors towards OA models and adopt a more supportive role for OA according to their preferences.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to investigate the extent to which academic librarians in Nigerian universities utilize self-archiving options to make their research papers visible globally.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was designed using SurveyMonkey software to collect data from 394 academic librarians in Nigerian universities.FindingsThe study revealed that the academic librarians in Nigerian universities know and actually use self-archiving options such as ResearchGate, institutional repository and academia.edu to self-archive their publications. While, self-archiving platforms like Kudos, Mendeley.com and personal websites/servers are not popularly used by the academic librarians. Factors such as increased exposure to previously published work broadens the dissemination of academic research generally, which increases institutions’ visibility, were among the options the academic librarians indicated as very important factors that motivate them to contribute their scholarly output to self-archiving options.Practical implicationsThe study called for academic librarians in developing countries to voluntarily sign-up to register with self-archiving options such as ResearchGate, Kudos, Mendeley.com, Academia.edu and others to enable them to self-archive their published papers for access globally by students, researchers.Originality/valueSelf-archiving of papers by authors will lead to an increased visibility of the author and possible citation of the work and chances of collaboration with international colleagues for research projects.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the level of open access (OA) adoption by researchers in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), identify predictors of OA status (OA vs non-OA) and explore the availability of OA versions of the articles and venues used by the researches for hosting of their articles.Design/methodology/approachArticles contributed by the researchers in IITs were searched using an advance search option in the Web of Science Core collection database. The search was restricted to journal articles published in English language in the year 2015. Of the 10,049 articles retrieved, 1,023 (10 per cent of the total) were chosen randomly. Articles selected after randomizations were exported to MS Excel for further analyses. Title of each article was searched in Google Scholar to assess its OA availability and venues used by the author for self-archiving. Details of ten articles could not be traced in Google Scholar, and they were excluded from the analysis. Based on the analysis of URLs, all OA articles were classified into three categories: gold OA, green OA and both gold and green OA. The OA articles available through green route were further classified into six categories based on the analysis of the websites and the self-archiving venues used by the authors: institutional repository, subject repository, researcher or scholar’s website, organizational website, ResearchGate and other websites.FindingsOf 1,013 articles examined, OA versions were found for 68.70 per cent of articles. Of the total OA articles, 10.26 per cent articles were available through gold OA and 58.44 per cent were available through green OA, while remaining 6.21 per cent were available via both gold and green OA routes. Although researchers use different venues for self-archiving their articles, ResearchGate and institutional repositories are the most preferred choices by the researchers in IITs. Researchers in IITs are seemed to be unaware of the self-archiving policies of publishers, as more than 85 per cent self-archived articles were found as final PDF versions that are normally not allowed by the publishers.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is limited to IITs, but it offers theoretical implications for extending its scope to different subjects and institutes. The findings of the study may be useful for the publishers and institutions for formulating OA policies. The findings of the study might be used for raising awareness of OA among researchers and encouraging them to contribute their research outcome in OA outlets.Originality/valueThis is the first study in India focusing on the availability of OA research.

© 2019 ASIS & T This study investigates motivations for self-archiving research items on academic social networking sites (ASNSs). A model of these motivations was developed based on two existing motivation models: motivation for self-archiving in academia and motivations for information sharing in social media. The proposed model is composed of 18 factors drawn from personal, social, professional, and external contexts, including enjoyment, personal/professional gain, reputation, learning, self-efficacy, altruism, reciprocity, trust, community interest, social engagement, publicity, accessibility, self-archiving culture, influence of external actors, credibility, system stability, copyright concerns, additional time, and effort. Two hundred and twenty-six ResearchGate users participated in the survey. Accessibility was the most highly rated factor, followed by altruism, reciprocity, trust, self-efficacy, reputation, publicity, and others. Personal, social, and professional factors were also highly rated, while external factors were rated relatively low. Motivations were correlated with one another, demonstrating that RG motivations for self-archiving could increase or decrease based on several factors in combination with motivations from the personal, social, professional, and external contexts. We believe the findings from this study can increase our understanding of users' motivations in sharing their research and provide useful implications for the development and improvement of ASNS services, thereby attracting more active users.

ObjectiveAs cases of COVID-19 infections surge, concerns have renewed about intensive care units (ICU) being overwhelmed and the need for specific triage protocols over winter. This study aimed to help inform triage guidance by exploring the view of lay people about factors to include in triage decisions.Design, setting and participantsOnline survey between 29thMay and 22ndJune 2020 based on hypothetical triage dilemmas. Participants recruited from existing market research panels, representative of the UK general population. Scenarios were presented in which a single ventilator is available, and two patients require ICU admission and ventilation. Patients differed in one of: chance of survival, life expectancy, age, expected length of treatment, disability, and degree of frailty. Respondents were given the option of choosing one patient to treat, or tossing a coin to decide.ResultsSeven hundred and sixty-three participated. A majority of respondents prioritized patients who would have a higher chance of survival (72-93%), longer life expectancy (78-83%), required shorter duration of treatment (88-94%), were younger (71-79%), or had a lesser degree of frailty (60-69% all p< .001). Where there was a small difference between two patients, a larger proportion elected to toss a coin to decide which patient to treat. A majority (58-86%) were prepared to withdraw treatment from a patient in intensive care who had a lower chance of survival than another patient currently presenting with COVID-19. Respondents also indicated a willingness to give higher priority to healthcare workers and to patients with young children.ConclusionMembers of the UK general public potentially support a broadly utilitarian approach to ICU triage in the face of overwhelming need. Survey respondents endorsed the relevance of patient factors currently included in triage guidance, but also factors not currently included. This study examined the extent of use of the institutional repository (IR) by academics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). The following research questions were addressed: What progress has been achieved to support the use of the university’s IR? What is the attitude of academics towards self-archiving? What challenges are hindering repository use at UKZN? What strategies can be employed to improve acceptance and use of the repository at UKZN? A mixed method research approach was adopted. A questionnaire was designed to gather quantitative data from academics, while qualitative data were sought from management and administrative staff of the university through interviews. Documents and statistical data from online websites were incorporated to corroborate field data. The study findings revealed that the signing of the Berlin Declaration, employment of a full-time IR librarian, updating of the DSpace, development of an online submission guide, and ongoing training and awareness programmes, were achieved to support the use of the IR. Academics’ attitude towards IR use was positive but was hampered by limited knowledge of OA and the benefits of uploading scholarly content on the IR, limited skill for self-archiving, and lack of time to upload content on the IR. Use of other OA platforms by some academics, such as subject repositories, personal websites and social media platforms like ResearchGate, Academia and Mendeley, took their attention away from the university’s IR. The study concluded that, with improved training, the implementation of a mandating OA policy and a reward system, use of the repository by academics at UKZN could improve.

The introduction of open-access institutional repositories in scholarly communication presents an opportunity for public universities in Zimbabwe to increase the visibility, reach and impact of their research output. However, this opportunity is missed because of the low utilisation of the repositories by scholars in the institutions. Guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model, the researchers investigated academics’ awareness levels of and attitudes, perceptions and concerns about institutional repositories with the aim of understanding academics’ deposit behaviour. Both qualitative and quantitative methods in the forms of a questionnaire and interviews were used to gather data from academics and library and research directors at eight universities and from policy documents and university websites. Stratified, systematic and convenience sampling techniques, including the complete enumeration method, were used. The findings revealed that academics lacked knowledge and awareness of institutional repositories and their value in scholarly communication. Therefore, marketing and training should be intensified to increase acceptance and usage of repositories.

This article describes the design and development of an interoperable application that supports green open access with long-term sustainability and improved user experience of article deposit. The lack of library resources and the unfriendly repository user interface are two significant barriers that hinder green open access. Tasked to implement the open access mandate, librarians at an American research university developed a comprehensive system called Easy Deposit 2 to automate the support workflow of green open access. Easy Deposit 2 is a web application that is able to harvest new publications, to source manuscripts on behalf of the library, and to facilitate self-archiving to a university&rsquo, s institutional repository. The article deposit rate increased from 7.40% to 25.60% with the launch of Easy Deposit 2. The results show that a computer system can implement routine tasks to support green open access with success. Recent developments in digital repository provide new opportunities for innovation, such as Easy Deposit 2, in supporting open access. Academic librarians are vital in promoting "openness" in scholarly communication, such as transparency and diversity in the sharing of publication data.

Self-archiving offers opportunities for authors to more broadly disseminate their work—both in pre-print form before its submission to a journal and in post-print form after its acceptance and publication in a journal. This editorial provides authors with guidance in navigating the rapidly changing options for self-archiving and affirms that the Journal of the Medical Library Association encourages authors to self-archive their work to boost its reach and impact.

Cilj: utvrditi razlike u otvorenosti i dijeljenju znanstvenih radova na Sveučilištu u Rijeci. Metode: Analizirani su znanstveni radovi autora Sveučilišta u Rijeci iz Hrvatske znanstvene bibliografije (CROSBI) u 4 područja (2017.–2019.) na uzorku od 210 radova. Kao metrički pokazatelj kvalitete časopisa korišteni su kvartili SciMago Journal Rank (SJR). Provjerena je prisutnost cjelovitog teksta u otvorenom pristupu u 3 vrste repozitorija (Repozitorij UNIRI – Dabar; ArXiv; Crosbi) i na društvenoj akademskoj mreži ResearchGate. Istraženo je postojanje razlika u stupnju sklonosti samoarhiviranju i dijeljenju radova s obzirom na područje znanosti. Academic librarians play a vital role in informing researchers about developments and trends in scholarly communication (Rodriguez, 2015), including the provision of publications support and open access (OA), especially through the university’s institutional repository (IR), often managed by the library. Given mandates from funders for open access dissemination of research outputs (ARC, 2017; NHMRC, 2014), OA practices are becoming increasingly important. Yet, its adoption has been typically slower in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) when compared to fields such as physics or biomedicine (Suber, 2017). This paper presents the results of a project exploring the perceptions and practices of researchers working in HASS towards OA, based on a study conducted at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), specifically focusing on its IR. Despite UTS’ mandated requirements for researchers to deposit their research outputs in the IR, the adoption rate has been low (about 29% overall and lower in HASS). The work outlined in this abstract was supported by the Library and Information Science Research Australia (LISRA), a three year project funded by the Australian Research Council that aims encourage and enable research culture and practice within Australia’s library and information profession. LISRA is being undertaken in partnership with ALIA, NSLA, University of Southern Queensland and Swinburne University. This abstract is one of three abstracts being submitted for consideration as a special LISRA themed session at APLIC 2018. The findings highlight some of the barriers and challenges facing open access in HASS, including perception of open access journals, publication pressures, and also the usability of the university repositories (Luca & Narayan, 2016; Narayan & Luca, 2016). Library staff also identified a lack of awareness about open access among faculty members, and issues relating to how the university communicated with them about OA. The findings of this project are already feeding back into customised workshops within the faculty and beyond, based on disciplinary preferences and trends, thus transforming practice. Our study provides a model for academic libraries in the development of proactive, targeted publications support that responds to researcher needs, which vary between disciplinary cultures. Implications for practice include encouraging a model of embedded librarianship (Luca, 2017) within disciplinary groups in order to understand and customise publications support within disciplines.

This study examines the differences in scholarly publishing and self-archiving practices of academic scholars in the faculties of agriculture and science in University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Survey method was adapted and a questionnaire specifically designed was used to achieve the objectives of the study. The study population consisted of all permanent academic staff in the two faculties. The study established that majority of the respondents of both faculties were aware of self-archiving concept as a means for providing open access but not many of them had experience in self-archiving. Majority of respondents from both faculties began this activity two to three years ago and they learnt about self-archiving by working in a field with established subject based archives. The original motivators for self-archiving were self motivation and declared citation advantage of open access papers. Agriculture scholars deposited more full text articles in digital repositories than science scholars. When analyzing the results of this study, it was proved that most of the scholars in agriculture faculty preferred to deposit conference papers while science scholars mostly preferred preprint materials. The current state of open access to journal publications within research areas belonging to the humanities has received relatively little research attention. This study provides a detailed mapping of the bibliometric state of open access to journal publications among ethicists, taking into account not only open access publishing in journals directly, but also where and in what form ethicists make their journal articles available elsewhere on the web. As part of the study 297 ethicists affiliated with top-ranking philosophy departments were identified and their journal publication information for the years 2010–2015 were recorded (1682 unique articles). The journal articles were then queried for through Google Scholar in order to establish open access status (web locations, document versions) of each publication record. Publication records belonging to the 20 most frequently used journal outlets (subset of 597 unique articles) were put under closer inspection with regards to alignment with publisher copyright restrictions as well as measuring unused potential to share articles. The results show that slightly over half of recent journal publications are available to read for free. PhilPapers and academic social networks (Academia.edu and ResearchGate) were found to be key platforms for research dissemination in ethics research. The representation of institutional repositories as providers of access was found to be weak, receiving the second lowest frequency rating among the eight discrete web location categories. Further, the study reveals that ethicists are at the same time prone to copyright infringement and undersharing their scholarly work.

Examines SHERPA/RoMEO publisher open access (OA) policy information for 100 publishers over a 13 year period (2004–2016) to consider whether their size, type or country (UK or US) affected the development of their OA policy over time. A publisher’s RoMEO colour code, whether they offered a Gold OA option, and the mean number of restrictions as to when, how and where papers may be self-archived, were all mapped. Kruskal–Wallis tests were run to assess whether the differences between their 2004 and 2016 positions were statistically significant. Finds that the growth of Green and Gold OA policy approaches has not been evenly distributed amongst publishers with some significant differences amongst publishers of different size, types and country (UK and US). Large commercial publishers are more likely to be allocated a RoMEO colour code, but at the same time place a high volume of restrictions as to where and how authors might self-archive. Small publishers are less likely to have a RoMEO green colour code, but the volume of restrictions they place on self-archiving are minimal. University presses appear not to be engaging with either OA agenda to any considerable degree. UK and US publishers’ OA policies appear to be influenced by the national OA policy environment which, considering the global nature of the scholarly journals market, was more pronounced than might have been anticipated.

Purpose The purpose of the study is to investigate the extent to which academic librarians in African universities know and use self-archiving options to make their papers visible globally. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was designed using SurveyMonkey software to collect data from 455 academic librarians working in 52 universities in Africa. Findings The study revealed that the academic librarians in Africa are aware of ResearchGate, institutional repository, personal website/server, kudos and Mendeley and they actually upload papers to self-archiving platforms such as institutional repository, ResearchGate, academia.edu and personal websites/servers. Factors such as increased exposure of one’s previously published work, provides exposure for works not previously published (e.g. seminar papers), broadens the dissemination of academic research generally and increases one’s institutions’ visibility were among the options the academic librarians rated as very important factors that motivate them to submit their scholarly output to the self-archiving options. It was also found that majority of the academic librarians in Africa checked the publishers’ website for copyright policy compliance before submitting their papers to the platform. Practical implications The study called for academic librarians in developing countries to voluntarily sign-up to register with self-archiving options such as ResearchGate, kudos, Mendeley.com, academia.edu and others to enable them self-archive their published papers for access globally by students, researchers, etc. Originality/value The findings of this study will add to the body of knowledge by bringing to light the extent of awareness and use of self-archiving options by academic librarians in universities in Africa.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to know the various factors librarians consider while selecting Open Access (OA) journal for publication and to identify the challenges librarians face with OA journal publishing. Design/methodology/approachOnline questionnaire was designed to collect data from 402 academic librarians in 87 universities in Africa using SurveyMonkey software. FindingsThe study found that academic librarians are aware of the “green” and “gold” routes but not familiar with the “diamond” route. The study revealed that a large number of the academic librarians have published only one paper in OA journals, followed by those who have not published any paper in OA journals. The study also revealed that reputation of journal and impact factor of journal were seen as very important among the factors that inform them of choosing OA. The majority of the respondents agreed that author fees, and lack of stable internet connectivity are the major barriers to publishing in OA journals. Practical implicationsThe study recommends that academic libraries in institutions of higher learning in Africa should organize seminars periodically on the need for their librarians to research and publish in OA journals. Social implicationsIdentifying factors involved in author decisions to publish in OA journals will help illuminate issues that may encourage or discourage author support of OA publishing models. Further understanding of these issues can assist the efforts to improve author perceptions of and confidence in OA publications. Originality/valueIt is believed that this study of African librarians publishing in OA journals is the first study in the region.
