Abstract

In this study, we wish to understand how cycling experts have a better ability to cross an aperture than a novice. We hypothesize that an expert has an efficient agent-plus-object system due to a better incorporation of the bicycle. To test this hypothesis we measured the different processes of recalibration when the size of the handlebar is changed. It includes a baseline (how the perception-action coupling is calibrated for the task), a rearrangement period (we disturbe the perception-action coupling by increasing the size of the handlebar) and a post-rearrangement period (we remove the disturbance by returning to the original width).

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition, Second Edition, provides an analysis of the processes underlying human skill acquisition. Abstract

The skill to swim fast results from the interplay between generating high thrust while minimizing drag. In front crawl, swimmers achieve this goal by adapting their inter-arm coordination according to the race pace. A transition has been observed from a catch-up pattern of coordination (i.e. lag time between the propulsion of the two arms) to a superposition pattern of coordination as the velocity increases. Expert swimmers choose a catch-up coordination pattern at low velocities with a constant relative lag time of glide during the cycle and switch to a maximum propulsion force strategy at higher velocities. This transition is explained using a burst-and-coast model. At low velocities, the choice of coordination can be understood through two parameters: the time of propulsion and the gliding effectiveness. Abstract

International audience; This article describe a method to measure a covariance matrix between two SO(3) based signals. For each one, the mean value is computed. After applying the log map to project each signal in the tangent space of its mean, they are both translated to the same tangent space. A classic covariance matrix can the be determined. Using IMUs attached to the hip and the neck of an indoor climber, it can be used to create an indicator of body kinematics coordination. Studying such coordinations might be useful for determining the climber skills.; Cet article présente une méthode pour calculer une matrice de covariance entre deux signaux à valeur sur SO(3). Pour chacun, sa moyenne est calculée. Après avoir projeté chaque signal dans le plan tangent de sa moyenne via l'application log, chaque projection est translatée pour être dans le même plan tangent. Une matrice de covariance classique peut alors être calculée. Cette mesure peut alors être utilisée pour l'étude du mouvement humain. En attachant des capteurs inertiels au cou et au bassin d'un grimpeur, il est possible d'estimer la coordination du roulis de différentes parties de son corps, indicateur de performance du grimpeur.

Abstract

Motor control in swimming can be analyzed using low- and high-order parameters of behavior. Low-order parameters generally refer to the superficial aspects of movement (i.e., position, velocity, acceleration), whereas high-order parameters capture the dynamics of movement coordination. To assess human aquatic behavior, both types have usually been investigated with multi-camera systems, as they offer high three-dimensional spatial accuracy. Research in ecological dynamics has shown that movement system variability can be viewed as a functional property of skilled performers, helping them adapt their movements to the surrounding constraints. Yet to determine the variability of swimming behavior, a large number of stroke cycles (i.e., inter-cyclic variability) has to be analyzed, which is impossible with camera-based systems as they simply record behaviors over restricted volumes of water. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) were designed to explore the parameters and variability of coordination dynamics. These light, transportable and easy-to-use devices offer new perspectives for swimming research because they can record low- to high-order behavioral parameters over long periods. We first review how the low-order behavioral parameters (i.e., speed, stroke length, stroke rate) of human aquatic locomotion and their variability can be assessed using IMUs. We then review the way high-order parameters are assessed and the adaptive role of movement and coordination variability in swimming. We give special focus to the circumstances in which determining the variability between stroke cycles provides insight into how behavior oscillates between stable and flexible states to functionally respond to environmental and task constraints. The last section of the review is dedicated to practical recommendations for coaches on using IMUs to monitor swimming performance. We therefore highlight the need for rigor in dealing with these sensors appropriately in water. We explain the fundamental and mandatory steps to follow for accurate results with IMUs, from data acquisition (e.g., waterproofing procedures) to interpretation (e.g., drift correction).

Abstract

Ice climbing is a recent competitive practice involving quadruped locomotion with ice tools in each hand and crampons on each foot. The progression resulted in contradictory actions: the climber has to determine the best target following by a swinging motion to anchor the axe combining accuracy and strength, so that the climber can pull on the axe to climb up the cliff. Finally, the axe is unanchored by the climber. These successive actions are numerously repeated during the progression conducting to fatigue conditions. Analyses of competitions indicated that performance is related to shorter times either for anchor or swing. The low expertise climbers spent more time in static conditions to find the target, using symmetric location of four supports conducting to greater fatigue. The biomechanical data suggested that experts adjust their movement to the kind of ice axe. They were characterised by high controlled coordination of the upper limb joints. The cocking phase appeared with a proximo - distal coordination associated to lower muscular co - activations. The strike phase is characterised by high joint moments with peak co - activations just before the impact stiffing the upper limb to transmit maximal force and velocity to the pick. The distal wrist joint controls the accuracy of the impact. The high co - activations of the digitorum muscles conditioned the strength of the hanging that appeared very important for transmission of force - velocity - accuracy actions from the upper limb joints to the axis. Fatigue affected more the grasping muscles then the muscles involved in the ballistic movement

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this study was to compare the speed, oxygen uptake (VO2 consumption), blood lactate concentration ([La]b), and stroke rate (SR) in sprint and middle-distance swimmers. Seven male elite middle-distance swimmers (performance level=89% of the world record) and seven male sprint swimmers (performance level=88% of the world record) were recruited. Ventilatory, metabolic and kinematic parameters were obtained during a 6 x 300-m incremental swimming exercise to exhaustion. VO2 kinetics were compared between groups using a 500-m interval training set (IT-500) swum at the lactate threshold (LT). Speed at VO2max was faster for the middle-distance swimmers (1.51 ± 0.02 m.s-1) than the sprinters (1.34 ± 0.07 m.s-1). Speed at LT was also faster for the middle-distance swimmers (3.1 ± 1.2 mmol.L-1; v LT = 1.46 ± 0.01 m•s-1, equivalent to 96.7 ± 0.5% of vVO2max) than the sprinters (4.5 ± 1.5 mmol.L-1; v LT = 1.22 ± 0.06 m•s-1, 91 ± 1.9% of vVO2max; P < 0.01). The middle-distance swimmers had a higher stroke rate at LT (36.7 ± 4.5 vs. 30.3 ± 0.7 s.min-1) and consumed a larger VO2max fraction (95 ± 2 vs. 84 ± 5% of VO2max; P < 0.01). A significant positive correlation was observed between ΔVE and ΔSR (r² = 0.93, P < 0.01) in the middle-distance swimmers during the IT-500, whereas a negative relationship was observed with Δstroke length (r² = 0.81, P < 0.01). The middle-distance swimmers were typically 10-15% faster at the lactate threshold and at the maximal oxygen uptake. In contrast, the blood lactate concentration was 40% higher in the sprint swimmers but the stroke rate was 15% lower at the lactate threshold.

22. The Role of Textured Material in Supporting Perceptual-Motor Functions

Abstract

Simple deformation of the skin surface with textured materials can improve human perceptual-motor performance. The implications of these findings are inexpensive, adaptable and easily integrated clothing, equipment and tools for improving perceptual-motor functionality. However, some clarification is needed because mixed results have been reported in the literature, highlighting positive, absent and/or negative effects of added texture on measures of perceptual-motor performance. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of textured materials for enhancing perceptual-motor functionality. The systematic review uncovered two variables suitable for sub-group analysis within and between studies: participant age (groupings were 18–51 years and 64.7–79.4 years) and experimental task (upright balance and walking). Evaluation of studies that observed texture effects during upright balance tasks, uncovered two additional candidate sub-groups for future work: vision (eyes open and eyes closed) and stability (stable and unstable). Meta-analysis (random effects) revealed that young participants improve performance by a small to moderate amount in upright balance tasks with added texture (SMD = 0.28, 95%CI = 0.46–0.09, Z = 2.99, P = 0.001; Tau² = 0.02; Chi² = 9.87, df = 6, P = 0.13; I² = 39.22). International audience; Cette étude vise à montrer l'intérêt d'articuler des données biomécaniques et d’expérience pour mieux comprendre l'activité en sport et, plus largement, l'activité. Afin d'étudier l'activité de nageurs élites confrontés à un dispositif technologique (le MAD system) évaluant les facteurs biomécaniques de la performance, elle intègre deux approches : l' « approche biomécanique » et celle du « cours d'action ». Trois nageurs élites ont participé à l'étude. Le traitement des données a consisté à reconstruire, et comparer, le cours d'in-formation de chaque nageur par l'articulation des analyses biomécaniques et celles de l'expérience des nageurs. Les résultats révèlent des traits typiques de l’activité organisant la dynamique de leur interaction avec le dispositif et montrent les liens entre l’organisation de leur activité, les caractéristiques physiques du dispositif technologique et les consignes de réalisation du protocole d’évaluation.

International audience; L’objectif est d’analyser, du point de vue des acteurs, les interactions entre des nageurs de haut niveau et un instrument d’évaluation : le Mad-System. Ce dispositif a été développé pour mesurer les résistances à l’avancement (Hollander, de Groot, van Ingen Schenau, Toussaint, de Best, & Peeters, 1986). L’étude vise à décrire le couplage entre les nageurs et ce dispositif technique (Mad-System) lors d’un protocole de recherche. Il s’agit d’analyser (a) l’activité réelle des acteurs lors de l’utilisation du Mad-system, et (b) la qualité de l’interaction entre les nageurs et le Mad-System. Les résultats de cette analyse servent ensuite de base à une réflexion sur la conception des dispositifs techniques dans le cadre de protocoles d’intervention en sport visant soit l’entraînement, soit l’évaluation scientifique de la performance.
