Abstract

Ocean warming is increasing the incidence, scale, and severity of global-scale coral bleaching and mortality, culminating in the third global coral bleaching event that occurred during record marine heatwaves of 2014-2017. While local effects of these events have been widely reported, the global implications remain unknown. Analysis of 15,066 reef surveys during 2014-2017 revealed that 80% of surveyed reefs experienced significant coral bleaching and 35% experienced significant coral mortality. The global extent of significant coral bleaching and mortality was assessed by extrapolating results from reef surveys using comprehensive remote-sensing data of regional heat stress. This model predicted that 51% of the world’s coral reefs suffered significant bleaching and 15% significant mortality, surpassing damage from any prior global bleaching event. These observations demonstrate that global warming’s widespread damage to coral reefs is accelerating and underscores the threat anthropogenic climate change poses for the irreversible transformation of these essential ecosystems.

3. Developing climate risk assessments for World Heritage: the Climate Vulnerability Index

Abstract

Climate change is recognised as the fastest growing threat to World Heritage (WH) properties by ICOMOS and the IUCN. The Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI) was first piloted at the Natural WH property of Shark Bay, Western Australia in 2018; the first application to a Cultural WH property took place in April 2019 at the Heart of Neolithic Orkney in Scotland. This paper outlines the results of the Orkney workshop together with one for Edinburgh conducted in May-June 2021 and looks at the benefits of the CVI assessment process.

Abstract

Like Philip Auslander, Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) questions the relationship between history and its mediatisation and, like Malcolm X, he calls for change that will “put you in the driver’s seat.” In the years since its composition, Scott-Heron’s most famous performance piece (1970) may be seen to have gained resonance in the way that, although the power of its famous names have faded, its call for action and empowerment is stronger than ever. Composed when Scott-Heron was only 21, it appeared on his first album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, beginning a career dedicated to spreading messages of social justice, civil rights, and environmental responsibility. In 1978 his hit R&B single “Angel Dust” decried the ravages of PCP, and the next year, following the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, he released “We Almost Lost Detroit,” about a less publicised near-disaster in Michigan. In his book The Last Holiday, Scott-Heron writes proudly about his efforts, with Stevie Wonder, to establish Martin Luther King Day as a US national holiday. His work was a clear influence on hip-hop and rap artists-although he resisted his received moniker “the godfather of rap.” Rather he called himself a “bluesologist-a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues.”
