Search

Issues of Social Justice, broadly conceived, are increasingly being included as a component in digital humanities scholarship or are the reason d'etre of the research itself. Equally, issues of ethics, privacy, and copyright are taking on greater prominence in DH scholarship. This short paper focuses on the creation of a course for the #dariahTeach platform, Social Justice in the Digital Humanities: Diversifying the Curriculum.

This multi-authored report summarizes the results from a transnational questionnaire survey conducted in 2015 by a research team within the DARIAH-EU Digital Methods and Practices Observatory Working Group (DiMPO). The Introduction offers a background to the study in the context of digital humanities work and scholarly practices research. Chapter 1 introduces the methodology, methods, and research design of the study. Chapter 2 presents and discusses the descriptive statistical results of analysing the full dataset of 2,177 valid responses of researchers who reside in Europe and identify one of the human sciences as their primary discipline. It summarises respondent profiles, and findings related to use of research materials and digital access, digitally-enabled scholarly activities, methods and tools, digital publication and dissemination of research results, use of software and services, and respondent assessment of digital needs. Chapters 3 to 9 present a similar analysis for respondents from European countries that have yielded more than 100 valid responses, in the form of national profiles for Austria (Chapter 3), Finland (Chapter 4), Greece (Chapter 5), Lithuania (Chapter 6), Poland (Chapter 7), Serbia (Chapter 8), and Switzerland (Chapter 9). Finally, the study questionnaire is included as an Appendix. The report will hopefully provide a useful baseline for further, timely longitudinal research on the shifting practices and needs of European digitally-enabled researchers in the human sciences.

In May 2018, the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect. This rigorous legislation on data protection and privacy, among many other things, significantly changed the way research with data from living persons is conducted since it introduced a number of obligations and restrictions to ensure a high level of protection of individuals' rights. The research community has been struggling with fulfilling these new obligations and desperately requires training, knowledge and tools to support their research under the new circumstances. In reaction to this demand, the working group Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities (ELDAH) of the European research infrastructure consortium DARIAH-EU developed the ELDAH Consent Form Wizard (CFW), a tool that provides researchers, cultural heritage institutions and research infrastructures with GDPR-compliant consent form templates for DH research purposes. With the help of this tool, valid consent to processing personal data according to the current European legal regulations can be gathered. The CFW offers support and guidance with three main scenarios: 1. Gathering data from and/or about living people for research purposes 2. communicating through mailing lists or other (digital) communication media 3. collecting data and/or consent from participants as the host of an academic event The tool, which was developed based on community- driven input by (mostly) European DH researchers and administrators, has been well received and is broadly used even beyond the scope of its legal application, since colleagues from South-Africa, New Zealand and India have also been using this tool as a means to transparently provide information to and gather informed consent from their research subjects: not in order to fulfill a legal obligation but to establish a high and transparent ethical standard in their own research practices despite legal differences. Other than fulfilling legal and ethical community demands, the development of the CFW tool also addresses another important topic in the dissemination of DH methods and contents: the goal to create a multilingual resource. A prominent and successful example for efforts at multilingual tool development and internationalisation are the TEI Publisher and the activities of the TEI working group on Internationalisation. In a legal and ethical context, internationalisation is particularly important not only in terms of increased accessibility but also as a means to create trust and accountability between researchers and their data subjects when gathering and processing personal data for research purposes. Participants in interviews, surveys and the likes need to fully understand their rights and the purposes for which their data are collected in order to make an informed decision about their participation. Therefore, having such resources available in their native language should be considered best practice. The - originally English - ELDAH CFW has already addressed this need with translations into Croatian, Italian and German. Additional translations into French, Greek, Slovene and even Hindi are already in progress, while translations into Spanish and Japanese are being planned (and will be implemented by the time of the conference). For the translation of the UI, a dedicated translation interface was developed. With the help of this interface, CFW translators can internationalize the tool to their national language line by line, field by field, button by button. Since the tool provides not only building blocks for a consent form, but also aims to educate its users with larger informative text passages as they complete the online form, a fully automated, dictionary-based translation approach was considered to inaccurate and therefore inadequate, especially since translations of legal contexts and formulations have to be accurate and reliable The proposed paper will discuss two important aspects, presenting the CFW as a showcase and starting point: a) the importance of tools that provide support to the global research community regarding aspects of data protection (or legal and ethical research standards in general) ; and b) the challenges, ways and benefits of developing such a tool as a multilingual resource. We would like to highlight the potential of our internationalization approach as a template for other projects, e.g. for the development of a multilingual library of terms that are commonly used on comparable interfaces. In addition, we would like to critically discuss issues that can arise in the course of translation, especially in the case of legal tech where portability and compatibility with national legislations are essential. Keeping a multilingual tool sustainable and accurate presents a tremendous challenge: We will explore how this could be achieved as a collaborative, community-driven effort and invite colleagues to share their own expertise in implementing multilingual resources. Thanks to funding reveived through the DARIAH-EU Working Group Funding framework and contributions from the Austrian and Croatian National consortiums,the DARIAH-EU working group ELDAH (Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities, https://eldah.hypotheses.org/) was able todevelopa tool that provides standardized consent form templates for obtaining legal consent from human participants: The DARIAH ELDAH Consent Form Wizard (CFW). The CFW enables digital scholars and the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized consent form that is legally valid in all of the European Union. The tool is freely accessible online and is currently being translated into various languages.

For almost 20 years, the digital repository GAMS (Geisteswissenschaftliches Asset Management System) has been providing long-term preservation of Humanities’ resources offering both a technical solution and a way of achieving sustainability in the handling of research data. Such domain-specific digital repositories rely on specialised design principles and a strategic orientation to balance the need for long-term sustainability and the use of advanced technologies. The repository solely relies on open source software due to its commitment to open access and open science. Its design principles intend to foster compliance with international best practices like the COAR Community Framework for Good Practices in Repositories (COAR 2020) and the certification guidelines of the CoreTrustSeal, and following the FAIR principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability. Long-term preservation entails migration to new software versions and reflecting advancements in technology as well as responding to security issues; increase in projects and services require a more elaborate and stable system architecture. This submission describes the conceptual framework and architecture of a large digital repository infrastructure that specialises in the preservation, management and presentation of research data in the Humanities, as well as the maintenance and migration of this exemplary research data ecosystem.

This presentation introduces the DARIAH working group ELDAH and its latest project on data protection issues in digital humanities, the DARIAH ELDAH Consent Form Wizard (CFW). The CFW is a tool that enables digital humanities scholars as well as the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain standardized consent forms that conform to the obligations and regulations of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). By answering a series of simple questions, scholars do not only learn about data privacy requirements, but are also provided with consent forms for their immediate use. The CFW supports you in collecting the consent of data subjects in three scenarios: gathering data from and/or about living people for research purposes ; communicating through mailing lists or other (digital) communication media ; collecting data and/or consent from participants as the host of an academic event.

In this workshop, we will discuss the European legal framework for data privacy and processing personal data (General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR). The workshop will help participants understand how their research is affected by the GDPR and what issues to pay attention to. First, there will be a general introduction to the topics of data protection and the processing of personal data in the context of research, education and cultural heritage to summarize the pertinent articles of the GDPR. Second, we will speak about the most common scenarios in which humanities’ and social sciences’ researchers encounter data protection issues. Examples of this include surveys, interviews and other research activities involving human participants, but also common academic scenarios like communication (mailing- lists, newsletters) and events (e.g. regarding picture and video recordings). For many of these activities, researchers have to obtain legal consent from their participants in order to comply with the GDPR. Therefore, the DARIAH Working Group ELDAH (Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities, ELDAH – Ethics and Legality in the Digital Arts and Humanities – a working group of DARIAH-EU) has developed a tool that provides standardized consent form templates for obtaining legal consent from human participants: the DARIAH ELDAH Consent Form Wizard (CFW https://consent.dariah.eu/). The CFW enables digital scholars and the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized consent form that is legally valid throughout the European Union.

In this poster, we would like to introduce the “consent form wizard” developed by the DARIAH-EU working group “Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities” (ELDAH). This tool is currently under development and will be finalized and available in time for the DARIAH annual meeting. It will enable digital scholars as well as the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized consent form that is conforming to the obligations and regulations of the European Union General Data Protection regulation (GDPR) and therefore legally valid in all of the European Union.&nbsp

One of the core concerns of research in the 21st century is to open up knowledge and science itself. This idea, at the heart of the Open Science movement, encompasses not only the idea of enabling democratic access to research results, but also a careful, responsible and transparent handling of the research process and the research objects themselves, especially when these objects are actually subjects (i.e. people). The ELDAH Consent Wizard project, co-funded through the DARIAH-EU Working Group funding scheme and the Austrian national CLARIAH-AT funding scheme, set out to develop a “consent form wizard” which enables digital scholars and the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized, GDPR-compliant consent form that is legally valid in all of the European Union, and also sets a best practice for transparency and ethical conduct towards research (and hence data) subjects. Depending on the context for which consent is obtained (e.g. use of images of people, processing of information shared in surveys, collection/processing of personal data), wizard users receive a consent form tailored to their specific needs after answering a series of questions.

The digital humanities (DH) enrich the traditional fields of the humanities with new practices, approaches and methods. Since the turn of the millennium, the necessary skills to realise these new possibilities have been taught in summer schools, workshops and other alternative formats. In the meantime, a growing number of Bachelor's and Master's programmes in digital humanities have been launched worldwide. The DH Course Registry, which is the focus of this article, was created to provide an overview of the growing range of courses on offer worldwide. Its mission is to gather the rich offerings of different courses and to provide an up-to-date picture of the teaching and training opportunities in the field of DH. The article provides a general introduction to this emerging area of research and introduces the two European infrastructures CLARIN and DARIAH, which jointly operate the DH Course Registry. A short history of the Registry is accompanied by a description of the data model and the data curation workflow. It is now beyond question that opening up access to scholarly knowledge is a key value of the academy in the 21st century. The Open Science paradigm however is not only restricted to facilitating democratic access to knowledge but also accommodates a set of key values of present-day knowledge creation such as fairness, transparency, equality and increased rigour and accountability in scholarly activities. Open Science therefore involves a cultural shift in the science ecosystem where research workflows are made transparent and subject to greater scrutiny from the early stages of protocols and planning through publication and data sharing. This is especially the case in research projects involving humans participants as subjects. Privacy and confidentiality become key ethical questions when research data is based on humans. For that reason, modern researchers are facing a complex set of legal issues and ethical dilemmas whenever they want to store, use, publish and share data collected from human participants. On the top of such dilemmas, researchers are also challenged by the perceived confrontations between the open research culture and the proliferation of ethical review procedures and legal requirements for data protection. In our workshop, we are aiming to address such challenges and deliver targeted advocacy for arts and humanities scholars working with data obtained from human participants. Making good use of the knowledge base and previous work that have been carried out in DARIAH’s Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities (ELDAH) Working group, we will recommend concrete steps that should be taken in order to secure ethically responsible research and present several guidelines and regulations that exist on issues related to informed consent and confidentiality.

This poster will inform the audience about the main activities and topics covered by the ELDAH Working Group. It will give us an opportunity to address questions and concerns of the audience regarding legal and ethical challenges of their work directly, to share our recommendations, but also to collect valuable input on the current prevalent concerns of our community and to connect with working groups and initiatives on these topics beyond our current Eurocentric scope

ELDAH is dedicated to addressing the needs of the research and education community regarding the topics of legal issues and research ethics. In the age of digital information technology and the constant availability of information through the internet, it is not only important to have democratic access to knowledge, but also essential to consider issues of access, transparency, reusability, and attribution. Topics like scholarly conduct, data protection and openness are universal themes in digital humanities research culture, and there is a growing demand for a common broader, international perspective.

Die europäische Umfrage zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken und digitalen Bedürfnissen in den Geisteswissenschaften ist das Produkt eines kollaborativen Unterfangens europäischer Forschender, die mit der DiMPOArbeitsgruppe zusammenarbeiten. Sie wurde als überregionale Längsschnittstudie konzipiert, die in einem europäischen Rahmen nach einigen Jahren jeweils wiederholt werden soll. Ziel der Studie ist es, einen evidenzbasierten Ausblick über wissenschaftliche Praktiken sowie die Bedürfnisse und Einstellungen europäischer DH-Forschender zu digitalen Ressourcen, Methoden und Werkzeuge zu geben. This research is the outcome of collaborative work of European researchers from different countries, working within the DiMPO Working Group. It has been designed as a multiregional longitudinal survey, to be conducted online across European countries and to be repeated every few years. Its aim is to provide an evidence-based outlook of scholarly practices, needs and attitudes of European humanities researchers towards digital resources, methods and tools across space and time. Results of the first run of the survey (completed in March 2015) are presented in a multi-authored report, which includes comparative and consolidated analyses, as well as five country profiles. In the digital age, legal questions have become one of the core issues in doing research. The main areas of the law that researchers have to concern themselves with are intellectual property rights (IPR) and copyright as well as data privacy. In order to use and share digital content, knowledge of licenses such as Creative Commons is also vital. Therefore, this ACDH Tool Gallery will provide participants with an overview of the Austrian and European legal landscape in these areas and also offer perspectives on legal systems outside of Europe and their most important features that differ from European legal systems. The most important ready-made licenses (such as Creative Commons and Open Data Commons) will be introduced and their benefits and downsides explained. In addition, tools that can aid researchers in choosing the best license for their own content will be presented. After the morning input session, the afternoon session will focus on practical questions. All participants will have the opportunity to bring up legal questions and issues they face in their projects and discuss them with the experts.

Badanie jest efektem współpracy europejskich badaczy z różnych krajów w ramach Grupy Roboczej DiMPO. Badanie zostało pomyślana jako ponadregionalny sondaż podłużny, przeprowadzany co kilka lat online w krajach europejskich. Jego celem jest dostarczenie opartego na danych przeglądu praktyk badawczych, potrzeb i postaw europejskich badaczy z nauk humanistycznych wobec zasobów cyfrowych, metod i narzędzi, w perspektywie przestrzennej i czasowej. This research is the outcome of collaborative work of European researchers from different countries, working within the DiMPO Working Group. It has been designed as a multiregional longitudinal survey, to be conducted online across European countries and to be repeated every few years. Its aim is to provide an evidence-based outlook of scholarly practices, needs and attitudes of European humanities researchers towards digital resources, methods and tools across space and time. Results of the first run of the survey (completed in March 2015) are presented in a multi-authored report, which includes comparative and consolidated analyses, as well as five country profiles. Este informe resume el análisis estadístico de los resultados de una encuesta online que ha sido llevada a cabo por el Digital Methods and Practices Observatory (DiMPO), un grupo de trabajo del VCC2 de la infraestructura de investigación DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities).Para proporcionar resultados basados en evidencias reales y actualizadas sobre las prácticas que se están desarrollando actualmente, así como las necesidades y actitudes de los investigadores europeos que implican el uso del entorno digital, esta encuesta se ha llevado a cabo gracias a un grupo internacional de investigadores de más de una docena de países, y se ha realizado centrándose en analizar las prácticas, actitudes y necesidades del mundo digital en la investigación en Europa a través de diferentes disciplinas de artes y humanidades y sus contextos de aplicación.

This report summarizes the statistical analysis of the findings of a web-based survey conducted by the Digital Methods and Practices Observatory (DiMPO), a working group under VCC2 of the DARIAH research infrastructure (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities).In order to provide an evidence-based, up-to-date, and meaningful account of the emerging information practices, needs and attitudes of arts and humanities researchers in the evolving European digital scholarly environment, the web survey involved a transnational team of researchers from more than a dozen countries, and addressed digitally-enabled research practices, attitudes and needs in all areas of Europe and across different arts and humanities disciplines and contexts.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of genetic networks to study the relationships between manuscripts and publications in genetic editing. We present a data model and its formalisation in an OWL2 ontology, as well as the corresponding data visualisations in the form of sky maps. Our case study is the literary œuvre of the Swiss writer and photographer Gustave Roud (1897-1976). We conclude with some remarks about the project workflow and the integration of data and visual modelling. &nbsp

In this paper, we study data reuse in scholarly editing, providing insights into the current panorama and imagining future developments. We will focus on the reuse of data, leaving aside the reuse of code and models, which would require a separate enquiry; and would concentrate on machine-actionable reuse, as opposed to human consumption.

Digital Humanities research often provides opportunities for collaboration – but it just as often requires collaboration. The demands placed on DH projects in terms of technical skills and know-how are such that collaboration and a reliance on adequate research infrastructures become a necessity.

The contribution utilizes the information density of the arrival lists published in the 18th century newspaper "Wien[n]erisches Diarium" with the help of digital, (semi‑)automatic methods: high-quality full texts are created with Transkribus and the entities named herein (e.g. points of entry/lodging) are extracted, geocoded and visualized on historical city maps.

This presentation explores how n-grams can be used to automatically classify and learn about music. An overall discussion is provided of various ways in which n-grams can be adapted for use with digital scores, and of how musically meaningful features can be extracted from them. The jSymbolic 3.0 alpha prototype feature extractor is then used in three sets of music classification experiments investigating how n-gram features perform relative to and combined with other types of features extracted from symbolic music files., Funded by the FRQSC and SSHRC.

As the primary resource for preschool children, picture books,and their gender narratives, can unconsciously shape and changechildren’s perceptions of sex roles and gender identity (Bleakley etal., 1988; Connor & Serbin, 1978; Latima, 2020). However, existingstudies show concerning trends in the representation of genderinequality in modern picture books, such as the overwhelmingnumber of male main characters and traditional gender stereotypesof vocations, personalities and habits (Casey et al., 2021; Hamiltonet al., 2006; Lee & Chin, 2019; Terras, 2018). It is thereforeimportant for children’s picture books to have diverse gender descriptionsand improved equal gender representations.Since the second Feminist Movement in the 1960s, gender equalityin UK children’s picture books have been continuously examinedyet slowly improved (Adams et al., 2011; Allen et al., 1993;Capuzza, 2020; Hamilton et al., 2006). Similar studies have beenfar less common in China, as the Chinese picture book market onlydeveloped from the start of the 21 st Century (Xiao, 2021). Onestudy has shown the existence of the traditional gender biases inChinese picture books (Liu & Chen, 2018). Based on the researchgap between these two countries, this study will (1) investigategender representations and narratives in picture books, (2) comparethe similarities and differences between bestselling Britishand Chinese picture books texts from 2010 to 2020. We do so byapplying text mining techniques to analyse gender narratives withinpicture book texts themselves. This follows on from our 2022study where we analysed publisher’s descriptions of texts, ratherthan full text mining of the book’s content (Li et al., 2022).

We present a Web application that facilitates the deep visual search of image collections using contemporary machine learning. We discuss image retrieval as a combined computer vision/human-computer interaction problem, and propose that the standardization of feature extraction is one of the main problems that digital art history faces today.

This presentation offers a side-by-side comparison of the publication processes for traditional monographs versus complex interactive digital projects. Prepared by Stanford University Press whose 6-year Mellon-funded digital publishing initiative is coming to a close in December 2023, the presentation reflects on the highly collaborative processes digital publications require.
