This set of posters brings together complementary disciplinary perspectives on working with cultural heritage data from the European project "In/Tangible European Heritage – Visual Analysis, Curation and Communication" (InTaVia). GREGOR POBEZIN: OPEN CHALLENGES IN TRADITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH: NOVEL APPROACHES TO BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH WITH INTAVIA Among the many factors that distinguish biography, we can perhaps most readily point to two that, while usually helpful and indeed essential to biographical studies, can also be important obstacles: tradition and structure. As a noble historiographical genre with a long tradition, biography inevitably produces its texts along structural guidelines. This structure may not be a problem for scholars of cultural or political history - theirs is the task of querying, questioning and imagining: in various languages and across multi-varied texts. But even historians can sometimes ask too little and imagine too much - or vice versa. For example, three biographical entries (Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, Deutsche Biographie, Slovenska biografija) about Pier Paolo Vergerio the Younger (1498-1565) all cover the all major events along an almost identical timeline. However, while one omits almost all of Vergerio’s literary production, the other concentrates on his contacts with protestants, as if life before his apostasy never existed. Tradition gets in our way. Technological advancements have had limited success (searching for Vergerio in Europeana will yield little success) - so far. For wider biographical research, a comparative platform seems a tool sorely needed, since it will finally render the comparative reading of numerous multivariate texts, the visualizing of essential data and asking relevant questions beyond the limitations of narrative structure. MATTHIAS SCHLÖGL: ON BUILDING A TRANSNATIONAL, MULTIMODAL KNOWLEDGE GRAPH InTaVia aims at bringing together different kinds of cultural data. To do so, the InTaVia Knowledge Graph (IKG) is built using structured biographical data on cultural actors from four European National Biographies as a base layer (Austria, Finland, The Netherlands, and Slovenia) – which have been converted using the IDM-RDF (https://github.com/InTaVia/idm-rdf). Second level layers enrich the biographical base layer with data on related cultural heritage objects, institutions, and places from reference resources such as Wikidata and Europeana. Currently the IKG contains data on around 300.000 distinct persons from various periods who had an impact on the history of European countries in one way or another. However, the IKG has to tackle several problems: for example, the source data is quite unbalanced with respect to the level of detail and structure; the sources contain biased data in various forms (e.g. gender bias, “national myths", …). This poster gives an overview of the InTaVia System Architecture, presents some statistical analyses on the structure and problems of the IKG and shares the "lessons learned" when integrating large historical secondary data sources. FLORIAN WINDHAGER, JOHANNES LIEM & EVA MAYR: VISUAL-ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVES ON CULTURAL INFORMATION The cultural knowledge graph IKG can be a rich integrative resource for multi-faceted research but is challenging to access for people without technical skills or prior knowledge on the structure and kinds of information available. To overcome these barriers, InTaVia develops a visualization-based interfaces for the visual search, analysis and communication of linked cultural information. Different visual analytical perspectives (for temporal, spatial, but also relational and categorical information related to the cultural entities in the IKG) support researchers to gain an overview on the structured data available, to see patterns from a distant reading perspective, and to identify interesting pieces of cultural information for close reading. For example, a humanist researcher can search for a cultural actor and will easily find a range of relevant cultural resources: biographical texts, related actors and related objects. They can then select entities of interest and analyze their movements over time, see cultural objects related to biographical events. By making transparent also the provenance of the information, this interface allows to compare and synoptically see different biographies on the same actor. Our poster walks visitors through the architecture of the visualization-based interface and we offer a demo how to use the developing platform it for searching, analysing, and communicating cultural information., The project InTaVia has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101004825.

Als Early-Access-Workshop mit einer neuen Kulturdaten-Plattform zielt die Veranstaltung auf die Erprobung und Diskussion von State-of-the-Art-Methoden im Bereich der kulturellen Sammlungs- und Biografiedatenvisualisierung. Das H2020-Projekt "InTaVia" (InTangible European Heritage Visual Analysis, Curation und Communication, https://intavia.eu) integriert kulturelle Objektdaten und strukturierte Biografiedaten-Bestände mehrerer Länder und führt sie in synoptischer Weise der Arbeit von Historiker*innen und kulturellen Praktiker*innen zu. Eine zentrale Rolle spielen dabei Methoden der Datenvisualisierung (inkl. Karten, Netzwerke, Mengendiagramme, oder Zeitstrahlen) welche die visuelle Analyse und Kommunikation von kleineren oder größeren Datensammlungen möglich machen. Der Workshop bietet eine praktische Einführung in die Arbeit mit diesen multiperspektivischen Werkzeugen, sowie eine Möglichkeit der Initiierung von kollaborativen Fallstudien. Ein Beitrag zur 9. Diese Arbeit beschreibt die Herstellung eines hybriden piezoelektrischen/elektromagnetischen Energy Harvesters und eines piezoelektrischen, resonanten MEMS-Dehnungssensors für den Einsatz in drahtlosen Sensorknoten zur Überwachung von Rotorblättern von Windturbinen. Zusätzlich wurde die Eignung von gesputtertem Aluminiumnitrid und entsprechende Legierungsvarianten auf Basis von Scandium und Yttrium auf ihren möglichen Einsatz in piezoelektrischen Energy Harvestern und low-power MEMS-Dehnungssensoren hin untersucht. Die optimalen Abscheidebedingungen für gesputtertes Aluminiumnitrid, dem Scandium und Yttrium zulegiert wurde, wurde durch Variation von Plasmaleistung, Kammerdruck und Gaszusammensetzung ermittelt. Die Mikrostruktur der abgeschiedenen Dünnfilme wurde mittels Röntgendiffraktometrie, Raster-Elektronenmikroskopie, Transmissions-Elektronenmikroskopie und Energiedispersive Röntgenspektroskopie untersucht, wobei die besten Dünnfilme ein kolumnares Schichtwachstum und eine hohe c-Achsenorientierung aufweisen. Zusätzlich wurden der piezoelektrische Koeffizient d33 und der intrinsische Dünnfilmstress σ charakterisiert. Zum ersten Mal wurden Al0.91Y0.09N-Dünnfilme mit piezoelektrischen Eigenschaften abgeschieden, wobei der d33 7.79 pC N^(−1) betrug, wie von der Dichtefunktionaltheorie Berechnung vorhergesagt. Die Al0.71Sc0.29N-Dünnfilme zeigten erhöhte piezoelektrische Koeffizienten mit Werten für den d33, wie sie in der Literatur zu finden sind. Beide Legierungen zeigten sehr hohe, kompressive Stresswerte von über 1 GPa. Dies führte zur Entwicklung eines modifizierten Sputterprozesses, mit dem es möglich ist den intrinsischen Stress zu verringern. Dadurch konnten Schichten abgeschieden werden, bei denen die Druckverspannung in AlN um 76% und bei Al0.71Sc0.29N um 50% reduziert wurde. Anschließend wurde versucht die Erfahrung aus diesem Teil der Arbeit in die Realisierung von piezoelektrischen Energy Harvestern und resonanten MEMS-Dehnungssensoren zu integrieren.Der hybride Energy Harvester wurde speziell für den Einsatz in Rotorblättern von Windturbinen mit einer spezifizierten Ausgangsleistung von 10 mW entwickelt. Er beinhaltet einen piezoelektrischen Harvesterbasierend auf einem Cantilever mit einer zusätzlichen magnetischen Masse an der Spitze des Cantilevers. Er wird durch eine magnetische Impulsanregung in Schwingung versetzt, die durch den elektromagnetischen Harvester, der einen größeren beweglichen Permanentmagneten beinhaltet, erzeugt wird. Die Herstellung des piezoelektrischen Energy Harvesters wurde im institutseigenen Reinraum durchgeführt. Die Charakterisierung der beiden Harvester erfolgte separat im Labor durch Messung der Ausgangsspannungund der generierten Ausgangsleistung. Zusätzlich wurde ein erfolgreicher Feldtest in einer Windturbine über einen Zeitraum von vier Tagen durchgeführt.Der MEMS-Dehnungssensor basiert auf einer piezoelektrischen, resonanten Mikrobrücke, welche inverschiedenen Dimensionen hergestellt wurde. Dabei wurde Länge, Breite und Dicke des Mikrobalkens variiert. Das mechanische Frequenzspektrum als Funktion der Dehnung und die Modenformen der Sensorelemente wurden mittels Laser-Doppler-Vibrometrie ermittelt. Zusätzlich wurde die elektrische Antwort des piezoelektrischen Materials durch Impedanzspektroskopie aufgenommen, wobei der Fokus auf dem Leitfähigkeitsspektrum als Funktion der von außen angelegten Dehnungswerte gelegt wurde. Beide Messtechniken wurden verglichen und der Einfluss der verschiedenen Geometriegrößen auf die Messergebnisse analysiert. Ein frequenzabhängiger Gauge Faktor wurde ermittelt, welcher sehr hohe Wertebis 6 500 zeigt, was einer vierfachen Erhöhung zu modernen Standard-Dehnungssensoren entspricht. Der gemessene Gütefaktor zeigte ein sehr interessantes und nicht vollständig erklärbares Verhalten, speziell bei Sensorelementen, welche sich in der Breite unterscheiden. Zusätzlich wurden Effekte wie das Beulen der Strukturen aufgrund des kompressiven Schichtstresses, Mode Veering aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Frequenzabhängigkeit der unterschiedlichen Moden von der Dehnung und nicht lineare Resonanzeffekte untersucht. Zum Abschluss wurde der vorher erwähnte Sputterprozess zur Herstellung von stressmodifizierten Dünnfilmen verwendet. Die modifizierten Sensorelemente zeigten einen erhöhten Gauge Faktor von 17 000, was einem Vielfachen der in der Literatur gemessenen Gauge Faktoren entspricht., This thesis is about the fabrication of a hybrid piezoelectric/electromagnetic energy harvester and apiezoelectric MEMS resonant strain sensor for wireless sensor nodes to monitor wind turbine rotor blades. In addition, piezoelectric materials, namely aluminum nitride and its alloyed variants AlScN and AlYN, are investigated for the piezoelectric energy harvesting component as well as for the low-power strain sensor. The optimal sputter deposition conditions of aluminum nitride alloyed with scandium and yttrium were studied by varying power, pressure and gas composition. The microstructure of the resulting thin films was analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy whereas the best thin films showed a highly c-axis oriented, columnar crystal structure for both alloying elements. Additionally, the piezoelectric coefficient d33 and the intrinsic thin film stress σ were characterized. For the first time, piezoelectric Al0.91Y0.09N thin films were sputter deposited, showing an increased d33 of 7.79 pC N−1 compared to pure AlN and matching the theoretical predictions of density functional theory predictions. The Al0.71Sc0.29N thin films showed also increased piezoelectric values, similar to those published in research. Both alloying materials showed a very high compressive stress of more than 1 GPa which led to the development of a new stress tailoring sputter process. Through this process it was possible to reduce the compressive intrinsic stress by 76% for pure AlN and by 50% for Al0.71Sc0.29N. Simultaneously, the piezoelectric coefficients were slightly increased by 14% and 9% for AlN and Al0.71Sc0.29N, respectively. These material-related results were the basis for the integration into piezoelectric harvesters and the MEMS strain sensors.The hybrid energy harvester is specifically designed for the use in a rotor blade of a wind turbine with a targeted output power of 10 mW. It contains a piezoelectric harvesting element based on a cantilever structure including a magnetic proof mass, which gets excited through magnetic plucking initiated through the electromagnetic harvesting element containing a bigger movable permanent magnet. The piezoelectric harvester is fabricated at the institute ́s cleanroom facilities. Next, the hybrid energy harvester is characterized in the lab by measuring the output voltage and output power of the two harvesting elements separately. Additionally, it was successfully tested in a real-world wind turbine over a period of four days.The MEMS strain sensor is based on a piezoelectric microbridge resonator, whereas the piezoelectricmaterial is used for excitation and sensing. Different MEMS microbridge designs were fabricated with varying length, width and thickness. The mechanical frequency spectra as a function of strain and the modeshapes of the sensor devices were characterized by laser Doppler vibrometry. Additionally, the devices were electrically characterized by impedance spectroscopy, with special focus on the conductance spectra as a function of strain. Both measurement techniques were compared to each other and the influence of the device dimensions on both measurement techniques were analyzed in detail. A frequency dependent gauge factor of the strain sensor was developed, showing very high values up to 6 500, representing a fourfold increase to current state-of-the-art strain sensors. The Q-factor as a function of strain was measured and showed an interesting behavior, especially for devices with increased width. Additionally, several effects like buckling due to the presence of a high, compressive thin film stress, curve veering due to the varying influence of strain on different modes and non-linear resonance phenomena were studied. Finally, the previously mentioned stress-tailoring sputter deposition process was integrated to fabricate low stressed sensor devices. Those devices showed an improved sensor behavior with an increased gauge factor of up to 17 000, which represents, to the best of the author`s knowledge, one of the highest measured gauge factors of strain sensors reported in literature.

Bericht über die Entwicklungen am International Prosopographical Interoperability Framework (IPIF). Ein Beitrag zur 8. Tagung des Verbands "Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum" - DHd 2022 Kulturen des digitalen Gedächtnisses.

In digitalen Editionen ist die automatische Erkennung und Annotation von Personen, Orten und Datumsangaben eine wichtige Aufgabe. Named Entity Recognition (NER) spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Historische Texte bilden noch ein Problem, da oft zu wenig Trainingsmaterial zur Verfügung steht, um entsprechende ML-Modelle zu trainieren.Das Projekt NERDPool versucht einerseits existierende Editionsdaten zu nutzen und daraus einen Pool an Trainingsdaten zu generieren, sowie andererseits Workflows zu erproben und zu implementieren, die es erlauben, einfach und effizient bestehende Korpa manuell zu annotieren. Den Schwerpunkt setzt das Projekts auf frühneuzeitliche deutsche Texte. Die Datensätze werden über die Webapplikation https://nerdpool-api.acdh-dev.oeaw.ac.at/ respektive über eine impelementierte offene API veröffentlicht. Mit Stand mitte Juli umfasst NERDPool rund 23.500 annotierte Datensätze. Darunter sind etwa Akten vom Regensburger Reichstag von 1576, Ministerratsprotokolle Österreichs und der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie 1848–1918 oder die ersten Ausgaben des Wienerischen Diariums (um 1750). This publication presents the abstracts of What’s Past is Prologue: The NewsEye International Conference organised by the consortium of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme project NewsEye: A Digital Investigator for Historical Newspapers. This conference, which was held online on the 16th and 17th of March 2021, featured four keynote speakers and over thirty presenters hailing from eleven countries. Spanning from May 2018 to January 2022, NewsEye is a research project advancing the state of the art and introducing new concepts, methods and tools for digital humanities by providing enhanced access to historical newspapers for a wide range of users. Hence, the conference theme Towards a future of interdisciplinary collaboration between Cultural Heritage, Digital Humanities, Computer Science and Data Science reflects certain aspects of the NewsEye project itself. The NewsEye consortium is composed of three national libraries and eight research groups based in Austria, Finland, France and Germany, which have each contributed specialised knowledge in the aforementioned subjects.

Because effects of climate change and an increase in elements at risk, mountain hazard loss increased throughout Europe. Yet, factors influencing loss, i.e. vulnerability, have gained less attention to date. Vulnerability is defined as the degree of loss resulting from the hazard impact on buildings. Recent studies have focused on evaluating vulnerability to dynamic flooding using proxies from case studies and based on empirical ex-post approaches. However, the transferability to other case studies and, therefore, the ability of such models to actually predict future losses is limited. To overcome this gap, we present a beta model based on loss data from the European Alps, which clearly shows that a single vulnerability function is sufficient to predict losses resulting from different types of torrential hazards and to provide probabilities of destruction under specific scenarios. As a result, the curves are transferable and may significantly increase the predictive power of risk analyses.

In the context of the United Nations “Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development” and the presented Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the process of developing and agreeing on indicators to monitor the SDGs implementation becomes fundamental. In this paper, we identify indicators for the sustainable development of cities that have the greatest potential for their underlying data to be measured by means of remote sensing. We first identified existing indicators, which are derived from the International Standard ISO 37120, “Indicators for city services and quality of life”, as being partly or fully measured by the use of remote sensing, and then presented these indicators to remote sensing experts in an assessment procedure. We then investigated Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) weighting methods to identify the most relevant quality of life indicators that can be captured by means of remote sensing techniques. We assess the remote sensing experts knowledge in the context of Decision Support Systems (DSS), and by means of both a questionnaire-based approach and a pairwise comparison approach. The approaches are compared with each other regarding their complexity, their potentials and limitations, and the respectively identified remote sensing based indicators. We identified three indicators related to surface characteristics as having the highest remote sensing potential. When contrasted to the results of the pairwise comparison, the questionnaire-based approach revealed high usability and confirmability. In the end, this approach enables cities administrations to decide which indicators they want to cover by means of remote sensing, depending on the capacities of their departments. (VLID)2575925

A lexicon like the Österreichisches Biographisches Lexikon 1815–1950 (Austrian Biographical Dictionary) seems to be as all in one cast because it is built on a set of formal rules for writing articles and some strict but basic criteria for the incorporation of new entries. The human reader can find information within that resource to a wide range of topics as well as detailed information about the life and career paths of historical individuals. An attempt to systematically analyze this information in a larger scale, however, must be condemned to fail without the help of computational methods. In a first stage it is therefore necessary to structure the biographical text for the machine. Pieces of information, the so called biographical building blocks, can be identified in two ways: through natural language processing methods and by manually annotation. Both processes which are intertwined and done in a custom-built virtual research environment provide the existing biographical data at hand for the analyses following in later stages. This paper aims at describing the data collection process on the example of place names which can be found in artist biographies and demonstrate possible use cases for historical network research. In this context it is also outlined how this field of research can benefit particularly from biographical data.

In this thesis a cantilever based MEMS resonator is presented to detect micro- and submicrometer sized magnetic particles in liquids, such as wear debris in oil during engine operation (online measurement). The excitation is based on an integrated piezoelectric aluminium nitride layer. The frequency response spectrum of the cantilevers is optimized to excite roof tile modes, which are especially suitable for measurements in liquids because of the lower damping effects compared to pure out-of-plane modes. A planar coil-like structure is used to create locally a tailored magnetic field to attract magnetic particles to the cantilevers surface. This results in a change of the effective mass and a change in the resonance frequency of the mode under investigation. Based on finite element method simulations of the magnetic field distribution for several planar coil designs, different cantilever based sensor elements are designed and manufactured applying standard silicon micromachining. The resonance response behavior of the sensor elements are optically measured with a Laser Doppler vibrometer and tested with different particle sizes and compositions under laboratory conditions.

Data for History is an international consortium founded on 24 November 2017 with the aim of improving geo-historical data interoperability in the semantic web. Its purpose is to establish a common method for modelling, curating and managing data in historical research. The poster highlights the web application/data model as well as the theoretical assumptions behind our migration research in the ÖBL data.

This workshop presentation was held at the conference digital libraries 2017 “Future of the digital heritage?”. It served as an introduction to the APIS framework and prosopographical research.

Die Gründung und rasche Mitgliederentwicklung der euro(pa)skeptischen Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) im Jahr 2013 steht im Einklang mit Erfolgen rechtspopulistischer Parteien in anderen EU Mitgliedsländern. Seit der Ablehnung des Verfassungsvertrages bei Volksabstimmungen in Frankreich und der Niederlande gilt der "permissive Konsens" bezüglich Kernfragen der Europäischen Einigung auch im Kreise der EG-Gründungsmitglieder als bedroht. Gegner einer fortschreitenden Vertiefung der Europäischen Integration, nicht zuletzt die britischen Tories unter Premier David Cameron, rechnen sich vermehrt Aussichten auf eine erfolgreiche Neuausrichtung der europäischen Politik aus. Diese europäischen und die weiteren zivilgesellschaftlichen Hintergründe der konservativ-neoliberal ausgerichteten Partei in Deutschland sind maßgebliche Faktoren für die Erklärung des schnellen Aufstiegs und die Einordnung der Alternative für Deutschland ins deutsche und europäische Parteienspektrum. Das Papier untersucht in diesem Zusammenhang zum einen die Herausbildung der europäischen politischen Partei Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists (AECR) auf der Basis der Prager Erklärung, die AECR Parteistiftung New Directions und deren europäisches Partner-Netzwerk genauer. Zum anderen werden die neoliberal-europakritischen Hintergründe der AfD anhand einer Reihe von zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, Think Tanks, Vorläuferparteien und Initiativen dargestellt., The founding and rapid membership development of the euro-sceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) in 2013 follows similar developments of right wing populist parties in other EU member states. Since the no-votes in popular referenda in France and the Netherlands the erstwhile "permissive consensus" with regard to core questions of European unification appears fragile even among the founders of the European Communities. The opposition against a progressive deepening of European Integration - not least the British Tories under premier David Cameron - reckons better chances to succeed with a new direction of Europe's political development. These European and other civil society backgrounds of the conservative-neoliberal political party in Germany are key factors to explain the rapid rise and the place of the Alternative for Germany in the German and European party spectrum. The paper sets out to more closely examine the development of the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists (AECR) on the basis of the Prague Declaration, and the AECR political party foundation New Direction, and its European partner network on the one hand. On the other hand the paper traces neoliberal, conservative and euro-sceptic civil society organizations, think tanks, predecessor parties and initiatives, which form the background of AfD in Germany.

Eigenen Angaben zufolge versucht das Global Development Network (GDN) wissenschaftliche Forschung im globalen Süden zu unterstützen. In dieser Diplomarbeit werden, in einem ersten Schritt, die umfangreichen Datenbanken des GDN, die so genannte \emph{Knowledgebase}, im Hinblick auf die Verteilung von ForscherInnen, Organisationen und Publikationen untersucht, um die wichtigen Konturen der Struktur des Netzwerkes darzustellen und besser zu verstehen. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die Ergebnisse einer Online-Umfrage unter registrierten Mitgliedern diskutiert. Im Resultat wird deutlich, dass das GDN seine eigenen Ziele bislang klar verfehlt da durch strukturelle Ungleichgewichte der Norden gegenüber dem Süden begünstigt wird. Dennoch zeigen sich die Mitglieder mit den Services des GDN verhältnismäßig zufrieden, was nur einer der interessanten Macht-Aspekte in diesem Netzwerk ist., The Global Development Network (GDN) tries to foster scientific research in the „Global South“. In an effort to better understand this global network this Diploma Thesis makes, in a first step, use of the huge online database of the GDN called Knowledgebase, which contains rich information about Organizations, Researchers and Papers registered in the Network. Based on such empirical data it is possible to examine structural dimensions of the GDN. In a second step the results of an online survey, realized among registered members of the GDN, are being discussed. Analyses show that the GDN so far fails to meet up to its own aims insofar as structural imbalances favour Northern over Southern scientists and organizations. Nevertheless, registered members seem to be rather satisfied with the services GDN is offering to them.

This paper describes BiographyNet, a digital humanities project (2012-2016) that brings together researchers from history, computational linguistics and computer science. The project uses data from the Biography Portal of the Netherlands (BPN), which contains approximately 125,000 biographies from a variety of Dutch biographical dictionaries from the eighteenth century until now, describing around 76,000 individuals. BiographyNet's aim is to strengthen the value of the portal and comparable biographical datasets for historical research, by improving the search options and the presentation of its outcome, with a historically justified NLP pipeline that works through a user evaluated demonstrator. The project's main target group are professional historians. The project therefore worked with two key concepts: "provenance" -understood as a term allowing for both historical source criticism and for references to data-management and programming interventions in digitized sources; and "perspective" interpreted as inherent uncertainty concerning the interpretation of historical results., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures, \'A.
