Oxides of $\textit{p}$-block metals ($\textit{e.g.}$, indium oxide) and semimetals ($\textit{e.g.}$, antimony oxide) are of broad practical interest as transparent conductors and light absorbers for solar photoconversion due to the tunability of their electronic conductivity and optical absorption. Comparatively, these oxides have found limited applications in solar-to-hydrogen photocatalysis primarily due to their high electronegativity, which impedes electron transfer for converting protons into molecular hydrogen. We have shown recently that inserting $\textit{s}$-block metal cations into $\textit{p}$-block oxides is effective at lowering electronegativities while affording further control of band gaps. Here, we explain the origins of this dual tunability by demonstrating the mediator role of $\textit{s}$-block metal cations in modulating orbital hybridization while not contributing to frontier electronic states. From this result, we carry out a comprehensive computational study of 109 ternary oxides of $\textit{s}$- and $\textit{p}$-block metal elements as candidate photocatalysts for solar hydrogen generation. We downselect the most desirable materials using band gaps and band edges obtained from Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory with Hubbard parameters computed entirely from first principles, evaluate the stability of these oxides in aqueous conditions, and characterize experimentally four of the remaining materials, synthesized with high phase uniformity, to assess the accuracy of computational predictions. We thus propose seven oxide semiconductors, including CsIn$_3$O$_5$, Sr$_2$In$_2$O$_5$, and KSbO$_2$ which, to the extent of our literature review, have not been previously considered as water-splitting photocatalysts., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 supplemental material

The full potential of such techniques in the life sciences and medicine, however, has not yet been fully exploited. We highlight current and upcoming advances in this direction. We describe different X-ray-based methodologies (including those performed at synchrotron light sources and X-ray free-electron lasers) and their potentials for application to investigate the nano-bio interface. The discussion is predominantly guided by asking how such methods could better help to understand and to improve nanoparticle-based drug delivery, though the concepts also apply to nano-bio interactions in general. We discuss current limitations and how they might be overcome, particularly for future use in vivo.

High throughput theoretical methods are increasingly used to identify promising photocatalytic materials for hydrogen generation from water as a clean source of energy. While most promising water splitting candidates require co-catalyst loading and electrical biasing, computational costs to predict them a priori become large. It is, therefore, important to identify bare, bias-free semiconductor photocatalysts with small initial hydrogen production rates, often in the range of tens of nanomoles per hour, as these can become highly efficient with further co-catalyst loading and biasing. Here, we report a sensitive hydrogen detection system suitable for screening new photocatalysts. The hydrogen evolution rate of the prototypical rutile TiO2 loaded with 0.3 wt. % Pt is detected to be 78.0 ± 0.8 µmol/h/0.04 g, comparable with the rates reported in the literature. In contrast, sensitivity to an ultralow evolution rate of 11.4 ± 0.3 nmol/h/0.04 g is demonstrated for bare polycrystalline TiO2 without electrical bias. Two candidate photocatalysts, ZnFe2O4 (18.1 ± 0.2 nmol/h/0.04 g) and Ca2PbO4 (35.6 ± 0.5 nmol/h/0.04 g) without electrical bias or co-catalyst loading, are demonstrated to be potentially superior to bare TiO2. This work expands the techniques available for sensitive detection of photocatalytic processes toward much faster screening of new candidate photocatalytic materials in their bare state.

The electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution has been evaluated for radial-junction n^+p-Si microwire (MW) arrays with Pt or cobalt phosphide, CoP, nanoparticulate catalysts in contact with 0.50 M H_2SO_4(aq). The CoP-coated (2.0 mg cm^(–2)) n^+p-Si MW photocathodes were stable for over 12 h of continuous operation and produced an open-circuit photovoltage (V_(oc)) of 0.48 V, a light-limited photocurrent density (J_(ph)) of 17 mA cm^(–2), a fill factor (ff) of 0.24, and an ideal regenerative cell efficiency (η_(IRC)) of 1.9% under simulated 1 Sun illumination. Pt-coated (0.5 mg cm^(–2)) n^+p-Si MW-array photocathodes produced V_(oc) = 0.44 V, J_(ph) = 14 mA cm^(–2), ff = 0.46, and η = 2.9% under identical conditions. Thus, the MW geometry allows the fabrication of photocathodes entirely comprised of earth-abundant materials that exhibit performance comparable to that of devices that contain Pt.

The production of hydrogen fuels, via water splitting, is of practical relevance for meeting global energy needs and mitigating the environmental consequences of fossil-fuel-based transportation. Water photoelectrolysis has been proposed as a viable approach for generating hydrogen, provided that stable and inexpensive photocatalysts with conversion efficiencies over 10% can be discovered, synthesized at scale, and successfully deployed (Pinaud et al., Energy Environ. Sci., 2013, 6, 1983). While a number of first-principles studies have focused on the data-driven discovery of photocatalysts, in the absence of systematic experimental validation, the success rate of these predictions may be limited. We address this problem by developing a screening procedure with co-validation between experiment and theory to expedite the synthesis, characterization, and testing of the computationally predicted, most desirable materials. Starting with 70 150 compounds in the Materials Project database, the proposed protocol yielded 71 candidate photocatalysts, 11 of which were synthesized as single-phase materials. Experiments confirmed hydrogen generation and favorable band alignment for 6 of the 11 compounds, with the most promising ones belonging to the families of alkali and alkaline-earth indates and orthoplumbates. This study shows the accuracy of a nonempirical, Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory method to predict band gaps and band offsets at a fraction of the computational cost of hybrid functionals, and outlines an effective strategy to identify photocatalysts for solar hydrogen generation.

The recent ExecutiveOrder by President Trump attempting to ban temporarily the citizens of seven countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen) from entering the United States is having significant consequences within the country and around the world. The Order poses a threat to the health and vitality of science, barring students and scientists from these countries from traveling to the United States to study or to attend conferences. In preventing those members of the international scientific community from traveling beyond U.S. borders without guaranteed safe return, the Executive Order demeans them; in so doing, it demeans us all. Universities and research communities are especially impacted, as major universities have students and often faculty holding passports from one of these seven countries. This temporary ban would affect refugees fleeing war-torn areas, challenging the long-standing notion that the United States is a safe haven for those fleeing persecution and war in addition to being a magnet for talent from every corner of the world. The pages of this journal reflect the geographic, ethnic, and cultural diversity that underpins great science. The ban impacts domestic and global scientific efforts and communities. Science succeeds through the cooperation between collections of individuals and teams around the world discovering and learning from each other. To ensure rapid scientific progress, open communication and exchange between scientists are essential. As scientists, engineers, and clinicians, we have benefited from open interactions and collaborations with visitors and students from all parts of the world as well as through scientific publications and discussions at scientific meetings.

The design and use of materials in the nanoscale size range for addressing medical and health-related issues continues to receive increasing interest. Research in nanomedicine spans a multitude of areas, including drug delivery, vaccine development, antibacterial, diagnosis and imaging tools, wearable devices, implants, high-throughput screening platforms, etc. using biological, nonbiological, biomimetic, or hybrid materials. Many of these developments are starting to be translated into viable clinical products.
