Goals scored are the most important performance indicator and may be a good tool to analyze game style predominance within different leagues. The aims of this study are to describe how goals are scored in the two major soccer leagues in the season of 2020/21, and to compare both leagues to watch possible differences in the offensive sequences that lead to goal-scoring. The aims of this study were: to evaluate goal scoring trends among two main soccer leagues and to compare the two leagues. A total of 1409 goals were observed using notational analysis. The total results show a dominance of positional play/fast attack (n = 38%), followed by set pieces as the second means to score (n = 32%) with corner kicks having a great impact (n = 36%) within set pieces goals. The most goals were scored by short possessions (n = 50%) with short passes number (n = 57%), with the recovery of the ball in the offensive third (n = 47%) and the huge dominance of finalization in central areas inside the box (n = 78%). Spanish La Liga scored more by positional play/fast attack, with most of the possessions starting in the medium third and using more the “central wing goal area” and “between wings left in the box” end zones when compared with English Premier League. The latter has more goals from counterattacks and corner kicks with very long possessions. Most of the possessions start in the offensive third and more goals are scored in “central wing between penalty and goal area” in comparison with Spanish La Liga. This deliverable reports on Task 2.2 ‘Assembly of observations about microbiomes, plastics, the plastisphere and carbon fluxes’. It used protocols established in task 2.1 ‘Definition of common standards for the assembly of spatially explicit data’ to compile, quality-control and grid existing high-quality observations into a knowledge base of observations (D2.1). Data included into AtlantECO-BASE1 consisted of contributions from the five following data sources and tasks: Task 2.2.1 ‘Microbiome data from traditional microscopy (presence-absence, abundance and biomass)’, Task 2.2.2 ‘Microbiome data from state-of-the-art optical/imaging analysis’, Task 2.2.3 ‘Microbiome and plastisphere data from state-of-the-art genetic analyses’, Task 2.2.4 ‘Nano-, micro and macroplastics data from state-of-the-art sampling methods’, and Task 2.2.5 ‘Carbon flux data from estimated from high resolution bio-optical sensors’. Additional data contributions and mapping efforts from other partners and work packages (Task 2.3) are also included. A comprehensive list and description of all data sets collected can be found in the Appendix Tables to this document.

Time spent in sedentary behaviours is associated with overweight and obesity, and adequate sleep duration is associated with improved body composition. This systematic review aimed to analyse the relationship between compliance with the 24-h movement guidelines and obesity indicators in toddlers, children and adolescents. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched from inception to December 2021. Cross-sectional and prospective studies that analysed the relationship between 24-h movement guidelines and overweight and obesity written in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish were included. PROSPERO registration number is CRD42022298316. Results: The associations between meeting the 24-h movement guidelines and standardised body mass index were null in the two studies for toddlers. Seven studies analysed the relationship between compliance with the 24-h movement guidelines and overweight and obesity among preschool children. Of these seven studies, six found no association between compliance with 24-h movement guidelines and body composition. Among children and adolescents, 15 articles were analysed. Of these 15 studies, in seven, it was found that children and adolescents who meet the 24-h movement guidelines were more likely to have lower risks of overweight and obesity. The meta-analysis yielded a pooled OR = 0.80 (95% CI = 0.68 to 0.95, p = 0.012, I2 = 70.5%) in favour of compliant participants. Regarding participants' age groups, compliance with 24-h movement guidelines seems to exert greater benefits on overweight and obesity indicators among children-adolescents (OR = 0.62, p = 0.008) compared to participants at preschool (OR = 1.00, p = 0.931) and toddlers (OR = 0.91, p = 0.853). Conclusion: Most included studies have not observed a significant relationship between compliance with the 24-h movement guidelines and overweight and obesity in toddlers, children and adolescents.

Ocean currents are a key driver of plankton dispersal across the oceanic basins. However, species specific temperature constraints may limit the plankton dispersal. We propose a methodology to estimate the connectivity pathways and timescales for plankton species with given constraints on temperature tolerances, by combining Lagrangian modeling with network theory. We demonstrate application of two types of temperature constraints: thermal niche and adaptation potential and compare it to the surface water connectivity between sample stations in the Atlantic Ocean. We find that non-constrained passive particles representative of a plankton species can connect all the stations within three years at the surface with pathways mostly along the major ocean currents. However, under thermal constraints, only a subset of stations can establish connectivity. Connectivity time increases marginally under these constraints, suggesting that plankton can keep within their favorable thermal conditions by advecting via slightly longer paths. Effect of advection depth on connectivity is observed to be sensitive to the width of the thermal constraints, along with decreasing flow speeds with depth and possible changes in pathways.

The current scoping review focus on nutritional issues in female soccer project examining specific topics: energy intake, energy expenditure and hydration.

The diversity of systematic reviews in recreational soccer is clear from the extant literature [1–8]. Of the available systematic reviews, some focused on specific outcomes such as bone health [7,8], fat mass [3], or maximal oxygen uptake [1], while others summarized the effects in different outcomes [2,4–6]. Additionally, half of the systematic reviews were exclusively dedicated to adult populations [2,3,7,8], while the remaining mixed populations as children, youth, adults, and older (health and unhealthy), be-coming difficult to have a clear representation of the effects on the specific populations of children and youth [1,4–6]. Considering the relevance of physical exercise for promoting positive physical fitness adaptations in children and youth and the opportunities offered by recreational soccer, there is room for conducting a systematic review of this population. A systematic review of recreational soccer effects on health-related outcomes and physical fitness of children and untrained youth populations will allow us to precisely understand the methodologies used by the interventions and identify the adaptations induced by interventions in comparison to control groups not exposed to these interventions. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to analyze the physical fitness and health-related markers adaptations occurring in children and youth in untrained populations exposed to recreational soccer programmes. The systematic review will mainly focus on the comparison to controlled groups, aiming to understand the real effects on health-related outcomes and physical fitness.

We aim to synthesize and assess the current knowledge concerning the differences in visual search behaviors between expert and novice team sport athletes.

To provide a living systematic account of evidence-gap maps pertaining the influence of playing time in soccer players' performance correlates.

Neste primeiro número é evidente o perfil abrangente que se pretende para esta publicação, com os 13 artigos que a integram a divergirem para temáticas distintas, mas atuais e relevantes no ensino e, especificamente, no ensino da Educação Física.

The diversity of approaches for defining running speed threshold in team sports players is clear from the extant literature. Identifying how the methodological approaches have been established and tracking the developing technologies may help researchers and practitioners to define the next steps in standardizing thresholds within and between sports. A scoping review can be helpful in mapping the extant literature, facilitating an evaluation of the landscape of the methodological approaches based on the question of interest. To date, no scoping review has been conducted about the research on individualized running speed thresholds in team sport players. Accordingly, the purposes of the current scoping review are to: (i) characterize the main methodological approaches to assess individualized running speed thresholds in team sports players; (ii) compare the use of traditional arbitrary thresholds and individualized speed thresholds in team sports players; (iii) provide an evidence-gap map on the approaches and study designs adopted in team sports; and (iv) to provide future directions for research and practical applications for the strength and conditioning field.

Our goal is to perform a living systematic scoping review with EGM of stretching-related studies in healthy athletes to identify current gaps in the literature and inform stakeholders in priorities for future research.

Searches were conducted on December 2021 in EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science, restricted to Portuguese, Spanish and English languages, with no restrictions regarding publication date, and no filters applied. The PEDro scale was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Meta-analysis was computed using the inverse variance random-effects model. The significance level was set at p < 0.05.Results: The search identified 1219 titles. From those, four studies were selected for qualitative and quantitative synthesis. Four studies provided data for sprinting performance, involving 10 experimental and 8 control groups showing a small effect of trained participants on sprinting performance (ES = 0.31; p = 0.064; I2 = 41.3%) when compared to controls. A reduction in physical activity and increased mental health problems were observed, mainly in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, this systematic review aims to examine the association between physical activity and mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In July 2021, a search was applied to PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria included cross-sectional, prospective, and longitudinal study designs and studies published in English; outcomes included physical activity and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms, anxiety, positive and negative effects, well-being). Results: Thirty-one studies were included in this review. Overall, the studies suggested that higher physical activity is associated with higher well-being, quality of life as well as lower depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress, independently of age. There was no consensus for the optimal physical activity level for mitigating negative mental symptoms, neither for the frequency nor for the type of physical activity. Women were more vulnerable to mental health changes and men were more susceptive to physical activity changes. Conclusion: Physical activity has been a good and effective choice to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze variations of selection for competition between late and early mature players and test the relationships between anthropometry, body composition, maturation, and selection for competition. Methods: Seventy-nine youth soccer players from under-11 to under-14 participated in this study, over 6 months. Body composition and maturity offset were estimated based on anthropometric data collected. Participants were also monitored for their number of matches as starters and time of play accrued in minutes. Results: Minutes played had large correlation coefficients with maturity offset (r = 0.58), and leg length and sitting height interaction (r = 0.56). Multiple linear regression explained 35% of the variation in minutes played (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.41, R2 adjusted = 0.35, RMSE = 334.8), but only 12% of the variation in matches as starter (p = 0.04, R 2 = 0.21, R2 adjusted = 0.12, RMSE = 5.47) between above and below the median of the maturity offset was accounted for, respectively. Conclusions: Although maturation may play a role in the minutes of play accrued and matches as starters in young, it is not necessarily determining. This study aimed to systematically review the association between telomere length (TL) and muscular fitness. In October 2020, an articles search was applied to PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria included: cross-sectional, prospective, and experimental study design; outcomes included TL; results expressed the relationship between muscular fitness and TL; studies published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Nine studies were included in the review. Results from the four prospective studies are mixed. In one study, the changes in TL were associated with grip strength. Another study concluded that longer mid-life TL was associated with increased grip strength later in life. However, in the other two studies, the association between TL and sarcopenia was not strong. Nevertheless, longer TL was associated with a slower decline in grip strength in older people. From the four cross-sectional studies, three indicated that TL was associated with muscular fitness. On the other hand, in a study with powerlifters, TL remained within the range of values found in subjects with no history of regular strength training, supporting the notion that muscular fitness was not associated with TL. The cross-sectional and prospective studies showed that the relationship between TL and muscular fitness is not conclusive. It seems that there is a positive association between TL and muscular fitness in middle-aged and older adults. However, among younger adults, this relationship was not observed.

The integration of methods to quantify the physical demands [e.g., Rating Perceived Exertion (RPE)] in small-sided games (SSGs) in younger soccer players, has been scarcely studied. In addition, few studies have been addressing the impact of balanced vs. unbalanced SSGs, in particular in youth players' RPE. This study aimed to investigate differences between balanced and unbalanced format games in young soccer players' RPE, controlling for different playing field sizes. The sample comprised 10 field players and 2 goalkeepers (Gk) being 13,55±0,51 years-old. The players performed 6 randomized different situations, following an identical methodology across the training days: (1) 4Vs.4+Gk (2) 4Vs.5+Gk, and (3) 4Vs.6+Gk. All situations were performed in 30x25m and 40x30m. The game situations lasted 5 minutes of practice and another 5 minutes of rest. After the execution of all game situations, participants were asked individually about their self-perceived effort, using the OMNI effort scale. In unbalanced format games when the difference in the number of players increases, RPE is lower. This tendency seems to be more evident in smaller compared to bigger playing field areas. The difference in RPE scores considering different dimensions of playing space seems not to be linear. Balanced soccer SSGs promote higher RPE than unbalanced soccer SSG. More studies on the topic are required considering different playing field areas as well as different players' backgrounds.

Methods: Forty-four male ultra-trail runners were assessed (36.5 +/- 7.2 years). They were classified as regional (n=25) and national (n=19). Wingate test was used to assess the anaerobic pathway. A progressive incremental running test was performed and ventilatory thresholds registered, in parallel to heart rate and lactate concentration at the end of the protocol. Comparison between groups was performed using independent samples t-test. Results: No significant differences were found between outputs derived from Wingate test. 16 Symposium of Aquatic Microbial Ecology (SAME16), “From Boat to Bench”- Integrating field observation with lab experiments, 1-6 September 2019, Potsdam, Germany.-- 1 page, Global ocean expeditions allow comparing variables that have been collected with standardized methodologies and treated with the same protocols in the same instruments. We looked at the global depth patterns of distribution of microbial abundances and heterotrophic prokaryote cell size and activity (as measured with flow cytometry and leucine incorporation) in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans by inspecting 126 stations in at least 13 Longhurst provinces from the surface down to 4,000 m during the Malaspina 2010 expedition. We looked at the log-log slope of the relationship between depth and abundance and activity of heterotrophic prokaryotes, abundance of viruses and heterotrophic flagellates, the relative contribution prokaryotes to high (HNA) and low (LNA) nucleic acid content cells and the proportion of viruses with low, medium and high nucleic acid content. In addition, we determined the depth variation of intact-membrane (“live”) and damaged-membrane (“dead”) prokaryotes, and those of actively respiring cells (i.e. reducing CTC, 5-Cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride). As general patterns, HNA decreased less strongly than LNA bacteria (so the %HNA increased with depth, as also did cell size), and leucine incorporation decreased less than prokaryote abundance (so the specific growth rate also decreased with depth, but less than abundance or production). The abundance of all heterotrophic groups decreased vertically but heterotrophic protists did so at much higher rate, so the ratio prokaryotes to small eukaryotes increased with depth, while viral abundance decreased at about the same rate than prokaryote abundance. Large viruses decreased more than medium-sized viruses and those more than the small viruses. The amount of CTC+ cells decreased less than total bacterial abundances so the %CTC+ increased with depth. Cells with intact membranes varied more with depth than the cells with damaged membranes. We observed significant variation around these average values in different oceans and Longhurst provinces, and significant correlations between the slopes and the surface values of some variables

International audience; Amazonian floodplains form complex hydrological networks that play relevant roles in global biogeochemical cycles, and bacterial degradation of the organic matter in these systems is key for regional carbon budget. The Amazon undergoes extreme seasonal variations in water level, which produces changes in landscape and diversifies sources of organic inputs into floodplain systems. Although these changes should affect bacterioplankton community composition (BCC), little is known about which factors drive spatial and temporal patterns of bacterioplankton in these Amazonian floodplains. We used high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) of the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of BCC of two size fractions, and their correlation with environmental variables in an Amazon floodplain lake (Lago Grande do Curuai). We found a high degree of novelty in bacterioplankton, as more than half of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) could not be classified at genus level. Spatial habitat heterogeneity and the flood pulse were the main factors shaping free-living (FL) BCC. The gradient of organic matter from transition zone-lake-Amazon River was the main driver for particle-attached (PA) BCC. The BCC reflected the complexity of the system, with more variation in space than in time, although both factors were important drivers of the BCC in this Amazon floodplain system.

The present study sought to examine the knowledge and explore the perceptions of PA recommendations for adults among Portuguese college students, by gender and fields of study. A total of 255 bachelor students (55.3% women; Mage = 21.0±2.2 years) from sport sciences, health sciences and other fields, from four colleges in Portugal, answered to an online questionnaire. College students’ answers about knowledge of PA recommendations were submitted to an inductive thematic analysis. The chi-square test was used to assess if knowledge of PA recommendations was independent of gender and fields of study. The majority of students (51.0%) assumed not knowing the PA recommendations. From those that assumed to know the PA recommendations, only 9.8% got them right, 42% overestimated, 10.7% underestimated and 37.5% did not know them for other reasons, with no differences found by gender and field of study. Overall, these students fail to identify the minutes per week and the intensity of PA dimensions of the PA recommendations. Portuguese students do not know the PA recommendations for health, including the sports and health sciences students. Implications for the development of national PA recommendations and public health campaigns to improve knowledge of college students are discussed., Cada subgrupo de población debe conocer las recomendaciones de actividad física (AF) para beneficiar su salud. El presente estudio buscó examinar el conocimiento y explorar las percepciones de las recomendaciones de AF para adultos entre los estudiantes universitarios portugueses, por género y áreas de estudio. Un total de 255 estudiantes de licenciatura (55.3% mujeres; Medad = 21.0 ± 2.2 años) de ciencias del deporte, ciencias de la salud y otras áreas, de cuatro universidades en Portugal, respondieron a un cuestionario online. Las respuestas de los estudiantes universitarios sobre el conocimiento de las recomendaciones de AF fueron sometidas a un análisis temático inductivo. La prueba de qui-cuadrado se usó para evaluar si el conocimiento de las recomendaciones de AF era independiente del género y de las áreas de estudio. La mayoría de los estudiantes (51.0%) asumieron no conocer las recomendaciones de AF. De aquellos que supuestamente conocían las recomendaciones de AF, solo el 9.8% las acertó, el 42% se sobreestimó, el 10.7% se subestimó y el 37.5% no las conoció por otras razones, sin diferencias por género y área de estudio. En general, estos estudiantes no identifican los minutos por semana y la intensidad de las dimensiones de las recomendaciones de AF. Los estudiantes portugueses no conocen las recomendaciones de AF para la salud, incluidos los estudiantes de deportes y ciencias de la salud. Se discuten las implicaciones para el desarrollo de recomendaciones nacionales de AF y campañas de salud pública para mejorar el conocimiento de los estudiantes universitarios.

Climate change is affecting the global hydrological cycle and is causing drastic changes in the freshwater hydrological regime. Water level (WL) reduction caused by drought tends to increase the concentration of nutrients favoring the dominance of cyanobacteria. We hypothesized that the WL reduction favors the dominance of cyanobacteria at regular dry conditions, but at extremely dry events mixotrophic algae would thrive because of light limitation due to increased resuspension of sediments on the water column. To test our hypothesis, we compared phytoplankton traits and water quality variables between two sets of reservoirs located in two watersheds with contrasting precipitation regimes within the Brazilian semi-arid. The reservoirs were compared in a dry period and in an extremely dry period to evaluate the response of the variables to an extreme drought. Drought intensification decreased the reservoirs’ WL and water transparency and increased the total phosphorous. Cyanobacteria dominated in the dry period, and the contribution of mixotrophic algae increased in the extremely dry period. Thus, phytoplankton with mixotrophic potential was favored by the extreme drought. This result suggests that this can be one possible scenario for phytoplankton communities in reservoirs of semi-arid regions if extreme droughts become more frequent because of climate change

To better understand the relationship between aspects of motivation and performance level of adult football players, this study aimed to identify differences in motivation in different motivational profiles created through hierarchical cluster analysis. The participants consisted of 304 adult football players (90 professionals, 144 semi-professionals, 70 amateurs, age: 25.4 ± 4.6 y). Participants completed the Task and Ego Orientation in Sports Questionnaire and the Self-Regulation Questionnaire. Based on the constructs of the questionnaires cluster analyses were performed. Chi-square was used to determine any relationships between players and clusters. Four different clusters were identified. There was no typical motivational profile for football players from different competitive levels. However, the differences in all four clusters represented specific characteristics in football players from the different levels of competition most represented in each cluster. Cluster 1, which was the most adaptive, was not related to competition level. On the other hand, professional athletes were significantly less represented in the least adaptive motivational profile (Cluster 4). The results highlight the complex relationship between competition and sporting motivation. Identifying the motivational profile characteristics of football players who can reach higher competitive levels presents itself as a future research opportunity.

Background: This study aimed to assess cross-sectional and prospective relationships between vigorous physical activity (VPA) and the risk of major chronic diseases among European older adults. Methods: Participants were 37 524 older adults who responded to the fourth (in 2011) and fifth (in 2013) wave of the SHARE project, from 13 European countries. Participants answered interview questions about the presence of chronic conditions and VPA. The cross-sectional and prospective association between PA and the number of chronic diseases was assessed using logistic regression models. Results: Among men and women, the prevalence of chronic diseases was significantly lower among those who reported VPA once a week or more than once a week. For men, VPA once a week was prospectively related with lower odds of heart attack, chronic lung disease, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. VPA more than once a week was prospectively related with lower odds of having all chronic diseases. Women who engaged in VPA once a week presented lower odds of having chronic diseases, except for hypertension, high blood cholesterol and cancer. For VPA more than once a week, cancer was the only disease not associated with physical activity. Conclusion: VPA is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases in men and women. Even the practice of VPA once a week seems to be sufficient to reduce risks of chronic diseases. publishersversion published

Em 1982, todas as crianças nascidas vivas (n=5914) na zona urbana de Pelotas e suas mães foram pesadas, medidas e responderam a questões sobre variáveis socioeconômicas, demográficas, reprodutivas, comportamentais, assistenciais e sobre morbidade. Uma amostra probabilística, aleatória, de 900 adolescentes foi calculada para o primeiro estudo de saúde bucal, realizado em 1997. Foram aplicados questionário e exame odontológico. 720 indivíduos dessa amostra foram localizados e revisitados em suas residências no segundo estudo de saúde bucal (2006). Os participantes de ambos estudos de saúde bucal foram incluídos neste estudo, em 2013. As variáveis de exposição advieram dos diversos inquéritos realizados previamente na amostra em estudo. Os examinadores e entrevistadores foram treinados e calibrados e a reprodutibilidade diagnóstica, aferida pela estatística Kappa. Os dados coletados foram agrupados em um banco de dados. O índice Kappa entre necessidade normativa e necessidade subjetiva assim como estimativas de sensibilidade, especificidade, valor preditivo negativo e valor preditivo positivo foram obtidos para toda a boca e dicotomizados por arco, mandibular e maxilar. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do pacote estatístico STATA 12.0. 539 voluntários foram avaliados (60,7%). Foi observada validade inadequada da necessidade subjetiva em relação à necessidade normativa [Kappa: 0,43; sensibilidade: 56,5 (50,3; 62,6); especificidade: 85,8 (81.1; 89,7); valor preditivo positivo: 79,1 (72,6; 84,7); valor preditivo negativo: 67,3 (62,1; 72,2)], exceto para perdas anteriores [Kappa: 0,82; sensibilidade: 93,3 (68,1; 99,8); especificidade: 88,9 (51,8; 99,7); valor preditivo positivo: 93,3 (68,1; 99,8); valor preditivo negativo: 88,9 (51,8; 99,7)]. A necessidade de prótese dentária aos 24 anos foi de 28,9% (95% IC 24,9 – 33,2) e aos 31 anos, 49% (95% IC 44,7 – 53,3). Necessidade de prótese dentária foi mais prevalente em usuários de serviços públicos. As trajetórias socioeconômica e de cárie dentária do nascimento aos 31 anos esteve associada à necessidade de prótese dentária, sendo que a trajetória socioeconômica inferior e a descendente causaram aumento no risco de necessidade de prótese dentária. Conclui-se que a necessidade normativa difere da necessidade subjetiva em adultos, exceto quando perdas anteriores estão presentes. As trajetórias socioeconômica e de cárie dentária durante o curso da vida estão associadas à necessidade de prótese dentária durante a vida adulta. This study aimed to evaluate, in a prospective birth cohort initiated in 1982, in the urban area of Pelotas: 1) prevalence of normative need for dental prosthesis (NN) comparing it with subjective need, self-reported; 2) ocurrence of need for dental prosthesis from 24 to 31 y; 3) socioeconomic and dental caries trajectory, use and type of health service used, as well as association of these with need for dental prosthesis. In 1982, all children born alive (n=5914) in urban area of Pelotas and their mothers were weighed, measured and answered questions about socioeconomic, demographic, reproductive, behavioral, care and morbidity variables. A randomized probabilistic sample of 900 adolescents was calculated for the first oral health study, carried out in 1997. A questionnaire and dental examination were applied. 720 individuals from this sample were located and revisited in their homes for the second oral health study (2006). Participants of the both oral health study were included in this study, in 2013. Exposure variables were derived from data of various surveys previously performed in our study sample. The examiners and interviewers were trained and calibrated and the diagnostic reproducibility, measured by Kappa index. Data were grouped in a database. Kappa index between normative and subjective need as well as estimates of sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value and positive predictive value were obtained for all the mouth and dichotomized by mandibular and maxillary arch. Data analysis was performed using STATA 12.0 statistical package. 539 volunteers were evaluated (60.7%). Inappropriate subjective need validity was observed in relation to normative need [Kappa: 0.43; sensitivity: 56.5 (50.3, 62.6); specificity: 85.8 (81.1, 89.7); positive predictive value: 79.1 (72.6, 84.7); negative predictive value: 67.3 (62.1; 72.2)], except for anterior losses [Kappa: 0.82; sensitivity: 93.3 (68.1, 99.8); specificity: 88.9 (51.8, 99.7); positive predictive value: 93.3 (68.1, 99.8); negative predictive value: 88.9 (51.8, 99.7)]. Need for dental prosthesis at age 24 was 28.9% (95% CI 24.9 - 33.2) and 49% (95% CI 44.7 - 53.3) at age 31. Need for dental prosthesis was higher in users of public services. Socioeconomic and dental caries trajectory from birth to 31y was associated with need for dental prosthesis, with lower and descending socioeconomic trajectory causing increased need for dental prosthesis risk. We conclude that normative need differs from subjective need in adults, except when anterior losses are present. Socioeconomic and dental caries trajectory during the life-course were associated with need for dental prosthesis during adulthood.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-09-01 The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different air particle abrasion (APA) protocols - with variations in particle types, duration of application, and the distance between the device tip and the ceramic - on the surface roughness (SR) of zirconia-based ceramic (yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal [Y-TZP]) and the shear bond strength (SBS) between Y-TZP and resin cement. In total, 135 sintered Y-TZP blocks were polished and divided into 9 groups according to 3 factors: particle (alumina vs alumina coated with silica), duration (5 vs 10 seconds), and distance (contact vs 10 mm away). All 3 factors significantly influenced the SR values between the experimental groups and the control group. For SBS, only the particle type was a statistically significant factor. Results showed that air particle abrasion with silica-coated alumina resulted in higher SBS, even though the SR values associated with those groups were not the highest. O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer as representações, estímulos e constrangimentos de árbitros portugueses de futebol de 11. Através da realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas foram inquiridos 19 árbitros. Os dados foram analisados através da técnica de análise de conteúdo com o software Nvivo 10. A análise dos resultados permitiu concluir que a representação do que é ser árbitro se consubstancia, sobretudo, pelo paixão e prazer pela atividade, sendo também atribuída significativa importância aos valores como a idoneidade, a isenção, responsabilidade, respeito e dignidade. Referiram que um bom árbitro apresenta não só uma boa condição física, mas também uma estrutura psicológica e um “saber estar” que potenciam o seu desempenho. A generalidade dos entrevistados sentia-se estimulada para o exercício desta atividade, referindo o prazer e a possibilidade de progressão na carreira como os principais estímulos. Aqueles que não se sentiam estimulados consideraram que eram mal remunerados e pouco acompanhados e acarinhados pelos responsáveis da arbitragem. Os principais constrangimentos apontados foram os comportamentos agressivos de adeptos, dirigentes e público, as dificuldades de conciliação com a vida familiar e profissional, as dificuldades de progressão na carreira e a injustiça na avaliação do desempenho., Motricidade, Vol 11 No 4 (2015)

In this study, we compare the performance of the widely used Bacteroidetes CF319a probe with the new CF968 probe. In silico analyses and tests with isolates demonstrate that CF319a hybridizes with non-Bacteroidetes sequences from the Rhodobacteraceae and Alteromonadaceae families. We test the probes’ accuracy in 37 globally distributed marine samples and over two consecutive years at the Blanes Bay Microbial Observatory (NW Mediterranean). We also compared the CARD-FISH data with the Bacteroidetes 16S rRNA gene sequences retrieved from 27 marine metagenomes from the TARA Oceans expedition. We find no significant differences in abundances between both approaches, although CF319a targeted some unspecific sequences and both probes displayed different abundances of specific Bacteroidetes phylotypes. Our results demonstrate that quantitative estimations by using both probes are significantly different in certain oceanographic regions (Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Arabian Sea) and that CF968 shows seasonality within marine Bacteroidetes, notably large differences between summer and winter that is overlooked by CF319a. This study aimed to identify socio-demographic correlates of leisure time physical activity among Portuguese adults. Subjects aged 31-60 years (1,076 males, 1,383 females) were categorized into two groups according to recommended physical activities ranging from ≥ 10 or < 10 MET.hours.week-1. Leisure time physical activity data was self-reported, including activities, duration of each session and frequency. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were applied to the results. Among men, having a high socioeconomic status (OR = 1.89; 95%CI: 1.30-2.76; p = 0.001) was associated with attaining the recommended level of physical activity. For women, middle education levels were associated with physical activity (OR = 1.36; 95%CI: 1.01-1.85). Moreover, middle socioeconomic status (OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 0.80-1.91; p = 0.009) was also positively associated with meeting physical activities recommendations in the unadjusted analysis. Men and women had different patterns of socio-demographic correlates. An intervention designed to improve the levels of physical activity among Portuguese adults may take these correlates into account. O objetivo do estudo foi identificar os correlatos sociodemográficos associados à atividade física dos adultos portugueses nos momentos de lazer. Sujeitos com idades entre os 31-60 anos (1.076 homens, 1.383 mulheres) foram categorizados como fisicamente ativos ou pouco ativos, de acordo com as recomendações da atividade física (≥ 10 MET.horas/semana ou < 10 MET.horas/semana). A atividade física foi autorreportada. O teste do qui-quadrado e regressões logísticas foram aplicados aos dados. Para os homens, um estatuto socioeconômico elevado estava associado ao cumprimento das recomendações da atividade física (OR = 1,89; IC95%: 1,30-2,76; p = 0,001). Para as mulheres, o nível educacional médio (OR = 1,36; IC95%: 1,01-1,85) e um estatuto socioeconômico médio (OR = 1,45; IC95%: 0,80-1,91; p = 0,009) estavam associados a cumprir as recomendações da atividade física. Homens e mulheres apresentaram diferentes correlatos associados à prática de atividade física. Intervenções com o objetivo de melhorar os níveis de atividade física devem considerar os diferentes correlatos identificados. Los participantes con edades entre 31 y 60 años (1.079 hombres, 1.383 mujeres) fueron categorizados en dos grupos, de acuerdo con las recomendaciones de actividad física (≥ 10 MET.horas/semana ou < 10 MET.horas/semana). La actividad física fue auto-reportada. Se ha aplicado el análisis de regresión logística y el chi- cuadrado. Los hombres que tienen un alto estatus socioeconómico (OR = 1,89; IC95%: 1,30-2,76; p = 0,001) se asociaron con la consecución del nivel recomendado de actividad física. Para las mujeres, el nivel de educación medio (OR = 1,36; IC95%: 1,01-1,85) y el estado socioeconómico medio (OR = 1,45; IC95%: 0,80-1,91; p = 0,009) se asoció con la actividad física. Hombres y mujeres tienen diferentes patrones de correlatos sociodemográficos. Una intervención diseñada para mejorar los niveles de actividade física entre los adultos portugueses podrá adoptar dichas correlaciones en cuenta.

Microbes are dominant drivers of biogeochemical processes, yet drawing a global picture of functional diversity, microbial community structure, and their ecological determinants remains a grand challenge. We analyzed 7.2 terabases of metagenomic data from 243 Tara Oceans samples from 68 locations in epipelagic and mesopelagic waters across the globe to generate an ocean microbial reference gene catalog with >40 million nonredundant, mostly novel sequences from viruses, prokaryotes, and picoeukaryotes. Using 139 prokaryote-enriched samples, containing >35,000 species, we show vertical stratification with epipelagic community composition mostly driven by temperature rather than other environmental factors or geography. We identify ocean microbial core functionality and reveal that >73% of its abundance is shared with the human gut microbiome despite the physicochemical differences between these two ecosystems.

International audience; Sequencing of 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons is the most common approach for investigating environmental prokaryotic diversity, despite the known biases introduced during PCR. Here we show that 16S rDNA fragments derived from Illumina-sequenced environmental metagenomes (mitags) are a powerful alternative to 16S rDNA amplicons for investigating the taxonomic diversity and structure of prokaryotic communities. As part of the TaraOceans global expedition, marine plankton was sampled in three locations, resulting in 29 subsamples for which metagenomes were produced by shotgun Illumina sequencing (ca. 700Gb). For comparative analyses, a subset of samples was also selected for Roche-454 sequencing using both shotgun (m454tags; 13 metagenomes, ca. 2.4Gb) and 16S rDNA amplicon (454tags; ca. 0.075Gb) approaches. Our results indicate that by overcoming PCR biases related to amplification and primer mismatch, mitags may provide more realistic estimates of community richness and evenness than amplicon 454tags. In addition, mitags can capture expected beta diversity patterns. The Great Lakes of East Africa are among the world's most important freshwater ecosystems. Despite their importance in providing vital resources and ecosystem services, the impact of regional and global environmental drivers on this lacustrine system remains only partially understood. We make a systematic comparison of the dynamics of the bio-optical and thermal properties of thirteen of the largest African lakes between 2002 and 2011. Lake surface temperatures had a positive trend in all Great Lakes outside the latitude of 0° to 8° south, while the dynamics of those lakes within this latitude range were highly sensitive to global inter-annual climate drivers (i.e. El Niño Southern Oscillation). Lake surface temperature dynamics in nearly all lakes were found to be sensitive to the latitudinal position of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone. Phytoplankton dynamics varied considerably between lakes, with increasing and decreasing trends. Intra-lake differences in both surface temperature and phytoplankton dynamics occurred for many of the larger lakes. This inter-comparison of bio-optical and thermal dynamics provides new insights into the response of these ecosystems to global and regional drivers.

Compreender a relação entre a Educação Física e o rendimento académico é importante para o desenvolvimento de políticas educativas mais fundamentadas com o objectivo de melhorar o desempenho académico dos estudantes. Objectivo: O objectivo desta revisão foi fazer uma síntese dos estudos que abordam a relação entre a Educação Física e o rendimento académico dos jovens. Método: Os estudos foram identificados através de uma pesquisa em 8 bases de dados (EBSCO, Web of Science, Dialnet, Health Reference Center Academic, MEDLINE, OneFile, Taylor & Francis Online e Wiley Online Library) utilizando como termos de pesquisa academic achievement, academic learning, academic performance e physical education. Os estudos identificados (n=28) foram classificados em incluídos (n=8) e rejeitados (n=20). Os estudos incluídos foram lidos e analisados de acordo com o objectivo do estudo, a revisão da relação entre a EF e o rendimento académico, e foram levantados todos os resultados e conclusões relevantes. Resultados: A maioria dos estudos incluídos concluíram que existe uma relação positiva entre a Educação Física e o rendimento académico dos alunos. Para os rapazes, dois estudos consideraram neutra esta relação, enquanto para as raparigas apenas um estudo considerou a relação neutra. Conclusão: Existem benefícios para o rendimento académico dos alunos quando participam nas aulas de Educação Física.

Here we show that 16S rDNA fragments derived from Illumina-sequenced environmental metagenomes (mitags) are a powerful alternative to 16S rDNA amplicons for investigating the taxonomic diversity and structure of prokaryotic communities. As part of the TaraOceans global expedition, marine plankton was sampled in three locations, resulting in 29 subsamples for which metagenomes were produced by shotgun Illumina sequencing (ca. 700Gb). For comparative analyses, a subset of samples was also selected for Roche-454 sequencing using both shotgun (m454tags; 13 metagenomes, ca. 2.4Gb) and 16S rDNA amplicon (454tags; ca. 0.075Gb) approaches. Our results indicate that by overcoming PCR biases related to amplification and primer mismatch, mitags may provide more realistic estimates of community richness and evenness than amplicon 454tags. In addition, mitags can capture expected beta diversity patterns. Nucleo-cytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs) constitute a group of eukaryotic viruses that can have crucial ecological roles in the sea by accelerating the turnover of their unicellular hosts or by causing diseases in animals. To better characterize the diversity, abundance and biogeography of marine NCLDVs, we analyzed 17 metagenomes derived from microbial samples (0.2–1.6 μm size range) collected during the Tara Oceans Expedition. The sample set includes ecosystems under-represented in previous studies, such as the Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and Indian Ocean lagoons. By combining computationally derived relative abundance and direct prokaryote cell counts, the abundance of NCLDVs was found to be in the order of 104–105 genomes ml−1 for the samples from the photic zone and 102–103 genomes ml−1 for the OMZ. The Megaviridae and Phycodnaviridae dominated the NCLDV populations in the metagenomes, although most of the reads classified in these families showed large divergence from known viral genomes. Our taxon co-occurrence analysis revealed a potential association between viruses of the Megaviridae family and eukaryotes related to oomycetes. In support of this predicted association, we identified six cases of lateral gene transfer between Megaviridae and oomycetes. Our results suggest that marine NCLDVs probably outnumber eukaryotic organisms in the photic layer (per given water mass) and that metagenomic sequence analyses promise to shed new light on the biodiversity of marine viruses and their interactions with potential hosts.

For in vitro phase, eluates were obtained by dilution of AlCl3-based into culture medium for 1h, 4h, and 24h. pH values were measured by digital pHmeter, cytotoxicity by MTT test and genotoxicity by Micronuclei test. A crossover, double-blind, randomized clinical trial was designed to evaluate clinical, immunologic and individual factors before and after GD by two techniques, conventional (gingival cord + astringent gel) and cordless (astringent-based paste). These factors were evaluated on incisors prepared for metal-ceramic dental crowns before, 1 day post-GD and 10 day post-GD. Interleukin 1β, Interleukin 6 and Tumor Necrosis Factor α concentrations were evaluated on gingival crevicular fluid collected before (control) and 1 day post-GD. Methods Twenty recently extracted human third molars were selected. Standard inlay mesio-occluso-distal cavities were prepared, with cervical margin in enamel (mesial) or dentin (distal). The specimens were randomly divided into two groups (n=10) and indirect restorations were made with Belleglass HP system (Kerr, Romulus, MI, USA). The cavities in the first group were treated with adhesive system Single Bond and restorations were cemented with dual curing cement RelyX ARC (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA). In the second group, the ED Primer (Kuraray, Tokyo, Japan) was applied and indirect restorations were cemented with Panavia 21 EX (Kuraray, Tokyo, Japan). The specimens were coated with varnish, except for the restorations and 1 mm around them and submitted to thermal cycling and then immersed in 2% basic fuchsine solution for 24 hours. IV Congreso de Biodiversidad, 6-8 de febrero 2013, Bilbao, TARA Oceans finalizó tras 2,5 años su campaña de circunnavegación global y el consorcio de bacterias (TANIT) coordinado desde el ICM-CSIC presenta sus primeros resultados sobre la diversidad procariota en distintos contextos ecológicos. En primer lugar, hemos desarrollado y validado una nueva manera de explorar la diversidad procariota utilizando los fragmentos del gen 16S rRNA directamente extraídos de los metagenomas realizados por Illumina (miTAGs). En segundo lugar, gracias a los protocolos utilizados en TARA Oceans, hemos analizado la diversidad y estructura de la comunidades procariotas asociada a distintas fracciones del plancton marino separados en 5 tamaños: 0,22-1,6 μm, 0,8-5 μm, 5-20 μm, 20-180 μm y de 180-2.000 μm. Seguidamente, hemos analizado patrones de biogeografía procariota (mayoritariamente en la capa fótica) a nivel global y hemos comparado diversas técnicas cuantitativas (miTAGs, CARD-FISH, citometría de flujo).
