The Multidimensional Memory Monitor (MEMO) empirically deals with the concept of culture of remembrance in Germany on various levels (content, emotions, practices, and consequences). Data were collected in a representative telephone survey (N = 1016). We found significant generational shifts and some regional differences, especially in terms of content and practice: 39% judged German reunification to be the single most important historical event in Germany since 1900, while 37% mentioned events connected to World War II. The former group tended to be younger and had grown up in former Eastern Germany more often than the latter. Contents of German family narratives appeared to be dominated by the narration of victim- (54%) and, to a lesser extent, helper-stories (18%), whereas stories of perpetrators among ancestors were rare (18%). Results are discussed and interpreted within a broader theoretical framework of collective memories, group-based emotions, and social identity. We also offer some thoughts on our findings that there seem to be generational shifts in memory content and practices and a detachment from history in terms of emotionality and reliable knowledge.
