Metamalzemelerin sinyal emilimi, anten, sensör, süper lens vb. birçok uygulama alanı bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ise metamalzemelerin sensör alanındaki önemli uygulamalarından birine değinilmiştir. Bu uygulama, akaryakıt sektöıüne yönelik olup markası belirli ve markası belirli olmayan benzin ve mazot numunelerinin tespiti için metamalzeme tabanlı sensör tasarımıdır. Akaryakıt numuneleri için deneysel çalışma gerçekleştirilmiş olup bu veriler simülasyona girilerek buna uygun sensör tasarımı gerçekleştirilmiştir. Böyle bir çalışma diğer sektörler için de örnek teşkil ederek daha farklı sensör tasarımlarının yapılmasına da imkân saglayacaktır., Metamaterials have many application areas such as absorber, antenna, sensor, super lens and etc. In this study, we focused on sensor application of metamaterials. This application is metamaterial based sensor design in order to find branded and unbranded gasoline diesel samples for liquid fuel sector. So, experimental setup is realized for branded and unbranded gasoline—diesel samples. Obtained measurement values entered to simulation programme to get optimal design. Such study would be an example for other sectors to realize different sensor designs.

WOS: 000407505700001, This study aims to demonstrate the effects of the different boundary conditions on triangular split ring resonator (TSRR)-shaped metamaterials in X band frequency regime. Three different TSSR-shaped metamaterials are designed and simulated in a certain frequency range. TSSR-shaped metamaterials are utilized to show that the use of different boundary conditions may result in completely different electromagnetic responses. Characterization is explained by applying 5 different boundary conditions. To verify simulation results, an experimental study is realized for the unit cell boundary condition. Both experimental and simulation results are complying with each other. A perfect metamaterial absorber is realized and its properties are theoretically, numerically and experimentally investigated at microwave frequencies. In addition, polarization and incident angle independencies are also tested for the structure. Theoretical, numerical and experimental results show that the proposed model has many advantages compared to those in the literature, such as perfect absorption, polarization and incident angle independencies, very simple design, and operation over a sufficiently wide band. A simple configuration is chosen for the proposed model so that it can be easily tuned for other frequency regimes to realize new absorbers for applications such as sensors and stealth technology.

New perfect frequency selective surface (FSS) metamaterial absorbers (MAs) based on resonator with dielectric configuration are numerically presented and investigated for both microwave and terahertz frequency ranges. Also, to verify the behaviors of the FSS MAs, one of the MAs is experimentally analyzed and tested in the microwave frequency range. Suggested FSS MAs have simple configuration which introduces flexibility to adjust their FSS metamaterial properties and to rescale the structure easily for any desired frequency range. There is no study which simultaneously includes microwave and terahertz absorbers in a single design in the literature. Besides, numerical simulations verify that the FSS MAs could achieve very high absorption levels at wide angles of incidence for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic waves. The proposed FSS MAs and their variations enable many potential application areas in radar systems, communication, stealth technologies, and so on.

We present gain characteristics of microstrip patch antennas covered with metamaterial substrate composed of split-ring resonators (SRRs) and metallic strip. To determine the performance of the SRR-metallic strip mounted on microstrip patch antenna, the metamaterial has been proposed as an effective medium with extracted constitutive parameters. Simulation results are supported by experimental measurements. The experimental results confirm that the metamaterial covered patch antenna improves gain by an amount of -5.68 dB (% 60.3) as well as radiation pattern (-8 dB to +20 dB) at WLAN communication.

Çift negatif metamalzemeler, elektrik ve manyetik geçirgenlikleri belirli bir frekans aralığında negatif olan ve yapay olarak elde edilen bileşik malzemelerdir. Bu malzemeler, genel olarak doğada bulunmayan, kendine özgü ve farklı elektromanyetik özellikler gösterebilmeleri için tasarlanırlar. Bunların fiziksel özellikleride bilinen malzemelerden farklıdır. Bu benzersiz fiziksel özelliklerinden dolayı, çift negatif metamalzemeler son yıllarda büyük ölçüde ilgi odağı olmuşlardır. Bu tezde, çift negatif metamalzemelerin özellikleri ve potansiyel uygulama alanları araştırılmıştır. Buna ilaveten, mikrodalga frekansı aralığında yeni tür metamalzemelerin gerçekleştirilmesi için bazı uygulamalar sunulmuştur.İlk olarak, çift negatif metamalzemelerin temel elektromanyetik özellikleri incelendi. Çift negatif ortam içerisindeki düzlemsel dalga, solak sistemler, çift negatif metamalzemelerin olağandışı özellikleri ve negatif kırılma kavramları detaylıca verildi. İkinci olarak, çift negatif metamalzemelerin nasıl yaratıldığı veoluşturulduğuna temel oluşturmak için, bu malzemelerin tanımı ve niteliği çalışıldı. Bu bağlamda, analitik (hypothetical, Lorentz, Drude ve soğuk plazma ortamları) ve fiziksel modeller analiz edildi. Daha sonra, çift negatif metamalzemelerin varlığında bulunan elektromanyetik dalga yayılımı çalışıldı. Bilinen yalıtkan ortam ve çift negatif metamalzemeden oluşan yarı sonsuz iki düzlemsel ortama dik ve açılı gelen dalga durumları incelendi. Teorik ve nümerik sonuçların ikiside verildi. Bundan sonra, iki farklı yalıtkan ortam arasına yerleştirilmiş çift negatif metamalzeme dilimi çalışıldı. Buna ilaveten, mükemmel mercek ve parabolik dalga kırıcı amaçlı uygulamalar için bazı simülasyonlar gösterildi. Sonra, çok katmanlı yapıların tasarım ve analizi için çift negatif metamalzemeler kullanılarak çeşitli yapılar oluşturuldu. Daha sonra, yeni metamalzemelerin özelliklerini deneysel olarak gözlemlemek için bazı iletim deneylerinin yapımı sağlandı. Bu yeni malzemeler, mikrodalga, milimetre dalga ve optik sistemlerde çift negatif metamalzemelerin çeşitli potansiyel uygulamalarında kullanılabilirler. Double negative metamaterials are composite materials in which both the permittivity and the permeability are simultaneously negative over a certain frequency band and constructed artificially. They are designed to show specific and unfamiliar electromagnetic features not commonly found in nature. Also, their physical features are different from the conventional materials. Due to these unique physical features, double negative metamaterials attracted a great amount of attention in recent years. In this thesis, the properties and potential applications of double negative metamaterials are explored. In addition, some tools are presented to realize new types of metamaterials in the microwave frequency range.First, the fundamental electromagnetic properties of double negative metamaterials are investigated. The plane wave in double negative medium, left-handed systems, the extraordinary features of double negative metamaterials, and negative refraction are given in detail. Second, the characterization and realization ofdouble negative metamaterials are studied to form a base about how they can be created and generated. In this manner, the analytical (hypothetical, Lorentz, Drude, and cold plasma media) and physical models are analyzed. Then, electromagnetic wave propagation in the presence of double negative metamaterial is studied. Normal and oblique incidence cases for the planar boundaries of two semi infinite media containing conventional dielectric medium and double negative metamaterial are examined. Both the theoretical and numerical results are given. Next, the slab of double negative metamaterial sandwiched between two different semi-infinite dielectric media is studied. Additionally, some simulations are illustrated for the application purpose of perfect lens and parabolic wave refractor. After that, double negative metamaterials are used to design and analyze several types of stratified structures. Mirrors, high reflection coatings, distributed Bragg reflector, stratified cold plasma stacks, and the combination of multilayer cold plasma, Lorentz, and Drude layers with conventional dielectric slabs are created in order and their scattering characteristics are shown. The advantageous of the stratified structures containing double negative metamaterials versus the conventional multilayer structures are also discussed. High reflection and transmission coatings; band pass, stop band, reflection, transmission, multi band-pass, multi saw-comb, oscillating, and multi notch filters characteristics at some frequency regions are obtained in the numerical investigation. These results can be used to generate new devices and equipments such as reflectors, coatings, and filters with high efficiency. At last, new types of metamaterials that exhibit negative refraction properties at the microwave frequency range are designed. This novel metamaterials are constructed using triangular split ring resonator and wire strip. Three new metamaterials comprised of triangular split ring resonator and wire strip are created and simulated. After designing and creating processes, novel metamaterial slabs are manufactured using hot-press technique. Then, some transmission experiments are provided to observe the characteristics of these novel metamaterials experimentally. These new materials can be used for several potential applications of double negative metamaterials in the microwave, millimeter wave and optical regimes. 199

Prof. Dr. Savaş UÇKUN January 2004, 155 pages In this thesis, a theoretical study of the plane waves in multilayer chiral medium is presented. In particular, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with multilayer chiral medium is investigated extensively. In order to move from the simple to the complex and compare the results, first of all propagation of a plane wave in a multilayer dielectric media is studied. Scattering characteristics of the multilayer dielectric media is formulated by using boundary conditions at the interface of two adjacent dielectric layers. Secondly, scattering characteristics of a multilayer chiral slab which is composed of N dielectric chiral layers of different material properties and thicknesses are obtained. It is assumed that the incident field is a plane monochromatic wave of any arbitrary polarization. Note that inside the chiral medium there is two modes propagation in each direction, left and right, with different phase velocities. Therefore, the electric field in the chiral medium can be desribed by the sum of left-circularly (LCP) and right-circularly (RCP) polarized plane waves of different phase velocities. Thus there are four waves in the m-th chiral layer, two propagating toward the right interface and the other two propagating toward the left interface. Imposing the boundary conditions at the interface of two adjacent chiral layers, the relations between the electric fields in the (m+l)-th layer are related to those in the m-th layer in the form of a 4x4 matrix. By means of thesematrices, the perpendicular and parallel components of the reflected and transmitted electric fields are found easily. Then the reflection and transmission coefficients, and power densities of the reflected and transmitted waves can be written in terms of their field components. One of the main reasons of interest in this resarch is to determine the characteristics of multilayered chiral slabs as a polarization-conversion transmission filter and an antireflection filter at some frequency band. From the numerical results, it is seen that the multilayer chiral medium may be used as both filter types. Furthermore, numerical results show that the chirality parameter increases the flexibility of the design process. Terahertz bölgesinde ince filmlerin elektriksel ve optiksel karakterizasyonu hakkında neredeyse son otuz yıldır çalışılıyor.. Son birkaç yıldır terahertz bölgesinde optik elektronik alanında, vanadyum dioksit ve süperiletken gibi ince film üzerine çalışanlar için gelecek vaat edebilecek yeni bir dönemin kapıları açıldı. Vanadyum dioksitin ve süperiletkenlerin iletkenliği özellikle ilgi çekmektedir çünkü sıcaklık kritik sıcaklığın üzerine çıktığında vanadyum dioksitin iletkenliği değişmektedir ve aynı zamanda süperiletkenlerin de oda sıcaklığındaki iletkenliği düşük sıcaklıktaki iletkenliğinden farklıdır. Bu çalışmada yalıtkan yüzey üzerinde vanadyum dioksit ve süperiletken ince filmlerin iletkenliği laboratuarımızda geliştirilen ve katmanlı ortamların analitik ve nümerik modellemesi ile desteklenen spektroskopi sistemine dayalı deneysel metotlar kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Ek olarak, bu tip iletkenliği değiştirilebilen malzemeler, geçmişte büyük bir zorluk olan terahertz bölgesinde çalışabilen aletler geliştirmekte özel bir öneme sahiptir. Metamateryaller ve onların 2 boyutlu hali olan metayüzeyler bu boşluğu doldurmakta önemli bir role sahiptir. THz bölgesinde yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), altın ve vanadyum dioksit (VO2) in iletkenlik özellikleri analiz edildikten sonra, çeşitli metayüzey modelleri Computer Simulation Technoloy (CST)Microwave Studio kullanılarak simüle edilmiştir. Bu simülasyonlar materyallerin farklı iletkenlik özellikleri gösterdiği sıcaklıklarda yapılmıştır. Farklı sıcaklıklarda zamana dayalı spektroskopi yöntemleri kullanarak yapılan tek katmanlı YBCO, dörtlü çaprazlama yapılı işlenmiş altın ve YBCO film ve işlenmemiş VO2 ölçümleri ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Sıcaklığı kontrol etmek için kriyostat kullanılmıştır. Sonuç olarak YBCO filmin kritik sıcaklığının 90K olduğu ve bu sıcaklığın altında metal gibi davrandığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Sıcaklık azaltıldığında YBCO filmin iletkenliğinin arttığı gözlemlenmiştir. Böylece düşük sıcaklıklarda YBCO filmin iletkenliğinin yüksektir. Altının iletkenliği sıcaklığa bağlı değildir. Bunlara ek olarak VO2 filmin kritik sıcaklığı 340K yakınında bir değerdir ve kritik sıcaklığın altında yarıiletken durumdadır. Bu durumda THz radyasyonunu iyi geçirir. Ancak, kritik sıcaklığın üzerinde VO2 film THz radyasyonunu engeller çünkü bu sıcaklık ve üzerinde VO2 metalik duruma geçer. Farklı alt katmanlar kullanarak aynı yapıda işlenmiş VO2 filmin geçirgenliğini incelediğimizde iletkenlikte ki bu değişiklik belirgindir. Etalon etkisinin safir alt katmanda kaynaşık silika alt katmana göre daha belirgin olması bu malzemelerin kırıcılık indisinin belirlenmesine olanak sağlar. Electrical and optical characterization of thin films has been studied for almost the past thirty years in the terahertz region. In the last few years promising thin film candidates such as vanadium dioxide (VO2) and various superconductors have opened up a new era of possibilities in terahertz optical electronics. Vanadium dioxide's and superconductors conductivity is of particular interest since vanadium dioxide's conductivity changes when temperature is above the critical temperature and also conductivity of superconductors at room temperature differ from those at low temperature. In this study, the conductivity of thin films made of vanadium dioxide, superconductors on dielectric (sapphire, fused silica) substrates was investigated using experimental methods based on in-house developed spectroscopy systems aided by analytical and numerical simulations of the layered media. Furthermore, such conductivity tunable materials can be especially important for developing devices that work in the terahertz region which historically has been a challenge. Metamaterials and two dimensional type of metamaterials called metasurfaces have an important role to fill this so called THz Gap. After analyzing the conductive properties of films based on yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO),gold and VO2 in the THz region various metasurface designs were simulated for THz transmission using commercially available software, Computer Simulation Technology (CST), Microwave Studio. The simulations were carried out at the various temperatures where the materials showed unique conductive properties and compared to measurements done for single layer YBCO, quadcross shape patterned gold and YBCO film, as well as unpatterned VO2 at different temperatures by using terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy (TDS) system. A closed cycle cryostat is used for controlling the temperature. Therefore, it is found that critical temperature of YBCO film is nearly at 90K and below the critical temperature YBCO film behaves as metal. When temperature is decreased, conductivity of YBCO film increases. Therefore at low temperatures YBCO film has high conductivity. Moreover, in these measurements the conductivity of gold film did not change with temperature. In addition to these, critical temperature of VO2 film is found nearly at 340 K. Below the critical temperature VO2 film is in the insulating state and it is transparent to THz radiation. However, above the critical temperature it blocked THz radiation because it is in the metallic state. This change in conductivity is also evident when examining the transmission using different substrates with the same patterned VO2 film whereby an etalon effect was more pronounced for sapphire than fused silica allowing for the determination of the refractive index of these substrates. 86

Metamalzemeler elektromanyetik özellikleri dalga boyu alt ilavelerle kontrol edilebilen insan eliyle üretilmiş malzemelerdir. Bu özelliğignden dolay metamalzemeler terahertz bölgesinde önem kazanmıştr. Terahertz bölgesi haberleşme, astronomi, spectroscopy, görüntüleme, biyoloji ve alglama gibi alanlarda önemli uygulamalara sahip olmasna rağmen bu bölge ile etkileşime giren malzemelerin az olması terahertz dalgaların kontrol etmek için yaplmış cihazların gelişimini yavaşlatmıştır. Metamalzemelerin süperlens, terahertz modülator ve anten gibiuygulamalar bu boşluğu doldurmak için büyük bir potansiyele sahiptir. Metamalzemeler negatif dielektrik özelliklerinden dolayı eşsiz malzemelerdir. İki boyutlu metamalzemeler metayüzey olarak adlandrlmaktadr. Bu yaplar metamalzemelerin aksine tek tara negatif dielektrik özellik gösterir.Bu tez çalışmasnda terahertz bölgesi için altın, bakır, indium tin oksit ve yttrium barium copper oksit gibi iletken yüzeylere sahip metayüzeyler tasarlandı,simüle edildi ve karakterizasyonu yapıldı. Yüksek iletkenliğe sahip metal ve üstüniletken yüzeyler üzerinde çalışıldı. Elde edilen alttaş bilgisi yapı Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio isimli bilgisayar programında simüle etmek için kullanldı. Her yapı terahertz bölgesinde rezonans vermesi için tasarland ve bu durum simulasyonlarla doğruland. Üstüniletken metayüzey karakterizasyonlar terahertz zamana dayal spektroskopi sistemine entegre edilmişkapalı devre helyum soğutmal kriyostat yardımyla yapıldı. Deneyler 20, 40, 60, 70, 80, 84, 86, 90, ve 298K sıcaklıklarında gerçekleştirildi. Farklı sıcaklıklarda rezonansta kayma ve genlikte değişimler gözlemlendi. Simülasyon sonuçlarnın deney sonuçlar ile uyumlu olduğu gözlemlendi. Metamaterials are manmade structures whose electromagnetic properties can be controlled with subwavelength inclusions. Due to this property metamaterials has gained importance in the terahertz region. Although terahertz radiation has many important applications in communication, astronomy, spectroscopy, imaging, biology and sensing, lack of materials which gives a response in this range decelerated development of devices to control and manipulate the terahertz waves. Metamaterials show a large potential to ll this gap since they have many applications such as superlenses, terahertz modulators, and antenna structures. Metamaterials are unique in that they exhibit a negative magnetic permeability and dielectric permittivity. Two dimensional metamaterials are called metasurfaces. These are two dimensional articial structures which show single negative metamaterial properties as opposed to three dimensional structures which show double negative properties.In this thesis, metasurface structures based on various conducting materials such as copper, gold, indium tin oxide as well as yttrium barium copper oxide were designed, simulated and characterized especially for the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Emphasis was placed on highly conducting materials, such as metals and superconductors. Extracted data of substrates were used to simulate metasurface structures using commercially obtained Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio program. Each metasurface structurewas designed such that the frequency of the resonance lies in the terahertz region and this was verified by simulating the behavior of the structure in the terahertz region. Superconducting metasurface characterization was done with a closed cycle helium cryostat that was installed inside the terahertz time domain spectroscopy system. Experiments were done at 20, 40, 60, 70, 80, 84, 86, 90 and 298K. At different temperatures a shift in the resonance frequency and change in the resonance amplitude was observed.
