Using data collected with the BESII detector at Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, the measurements of relative branchin- fractions for seven Cabibbo-suppressed hadronic weak decays D-0 -> K-K+, pi-pi(+), pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) and pi-pi(+)pi(-), D-divided by -> (K) over bar K-0(divided by), K-K+pi(+) and pi(-),pi(+pi+) are presented. The decay psi' + pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) is analyzed using a sample of 14 million psi' events taken with the BESII detector at the BEPC, and the branching fraction is measured to be B(psi' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) = (18.1 +/- 1.8 +/- 1.9) x 10(-5). A partial wave analysis is carried out using the helicity amplitude method. psi' -> rho(770)pi is observed, and the branching fraction is measured to be B(psi' -> rho(770)pi) = (5.1 +/- 0.7 +/- 1.1) x 10(-5), where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. A high mass enhancement with mass around 2.15 GeV/c(2) is also observed. Attributing this enhancement to the p(2150) resonance, the branching fraction is measured to be B(psi' -> rho(2150)pi -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) = (19.4 +/- 2.5(-3.4)(+11.5)) x 10(-5). The results will help in the understanding of the longstanding "rho pi puzzle" between J/psi and psi' hadronic decays. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A partial wave analysis is presented of J/psi --> phipi(+)pi(-) and phiK(+)K(-) from a sample of 58M J/psi events in the BES II detector. The f(0)(980) is observed clearly in both sets of data, and parameters of the Flatte formula are determined accurately: M = 965 +/- 8(stat) +/- 6(syst) MeV/c(2), g(1) = 165 +/- 10 +/- 15 MeV/c(2), g(2)/g(1) = 4.21 +/- 0.25 +/- 0.21. The phipipi data also exhibit a strong pipi peak centred at M = 1335 MeV/c(2). It may be fitted with f(2)(1270) and a dominant 0(+) signal made from f(0)(1370) interfering with a smaller f(0)(1500) component. There is evidence that the f(0)(1370) signal is resonant, from interference with f(2)(1270). There is also a state in pipi with M = 1790(-30)(+40) MeV/c(2) and Gamma = 270(-30)(+60) MeV/c(2); spin 0 is preferred over spin 2. This state, f(0)(1790), is distinct from f(0)(1710). The phiK (K) over bar data contain a strong peak due to f(2)'(1525). A shoulder on its upper side may be fitted by interference between f(0)(1500) and f(0)(1710). (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. New data are presented on J/psi --> omegaK(+)K(-) from a sample of 58M J/psi events in the upgraded BES II detector at the BEPC. There is a conspicuous signal for f(0)(1710) --> K+K- and a peak at higher mass which may be fitted with f(2)(2150) --> K (K) over bar. From a combined analysis with omegapi(+)pi(-) data, the branching ratio BR(f(0)(1710) --> pipi)/BR(f(0)(1710) --> K (K) over bar) is < 0.11 at the 95% confidence level. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The cross sections for D 0 D ¯ 0 and D + D − production at 3.773 GeV have been measured with BES-II detector at BEPC. These measurements are made by analyzing a data sample of about 17.3 pb −1 collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Observed cross sections for the charm pair production are radiatively corrected to obtain the tree level cross section for D D ¯ production. A measurement of the total tree level hadronic cross section is obtained from the tree level D D ¯ cross section and an extrapolation of the R u d s below the open charm threshold.

Using a sample of 58 million J/psi events recorded in the BESII detector, the decay J/psi --> omegapi(+)pi(-) is studied. There are conspicuous omegaf(2)(1270) and b(1)(1235)pi signals. At low pipi mass, a large, broad peak due to the sigma is observed, and its pole position is determined to be (541 +/- 39) - i (252 +/- 42) MeV from the mean of six analyses. The errors, which are dominated by the systematic errors, cover the statistical and systematic errors in the six analyses, as well as the observed variation of the six analyses. Using a sample of 58×10 6 J / ψ events collected with the BESII detector, radiative decays J / ψ → γγV , where V = ρ or φ , are studied. A resonance around 1420 MeV/ c 2 ( X (1424)) is observed in the γρ mass spectrum. Its mass and width are measured to be 1424±10(stat)±11(sys) MeV/ c 2 and 101.0±8.8±8.8 MeV/ c 2 , respectively, and its branching ratio B ( J / ψ → γX (1424)→ γγρ ) is determined to be (1.07±0.17±0.11)×10 −4 . A search for X (1424)→ γφ yields a 95% C.L. upper limit B ( J / ψ → γX (1424)→ γγφ ) −4 .

Using a sample of 5.8X10E7 J/$\psi$ events, the Beijing Spectrometer experiment has searched for the decay J/$\psi \to e\mu$. Four candidates, consistent with the estimated background, are observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction of J/$\psi \to e\mu$ of 1.1X10E-6 at the 90% C.L. is obtained.

Data are presented on the reaction J/psi--> p pbar eta using 7.8 million J/psi triggers collected by the BEjing Spectrometer (BES). A partial wave analysis is performed. A clear enhancement near the p eta(pbar eta) threshold is observed. It is fitted with a JP=1/2- resonance with mass $M= 1530\pm 10$ MeV and width $\Gamma = 95\pm 25$ MeV. In addition, there is a peak around 1650 MeV with JP=1/2- preferred also, fitted with $M =1647\pm 20$ MeV and $\Gamma = 145^{+80}_{-45}$ MeV. These two N* resonances are believed to be the two well established states, S11(1535) and S11(1650), respectively. It is the first partial wave study of the production of these resonances from J/psi decays.

BES data on $J/\psi \to \gamma (K^{\pm} K_S^0 \pi^{\mp})$ are presented. There is a strong peak due to $\eta(1440)/\iota$, which is fitted with a Breit-Wigner amplitude with $s$-dependent widths for decays to $K^*K$, $\kappa K$, $\eta \pi\pi$ and $\rho\rho$; $\kappa$ refers to the $K\pi$ S-wave. At a $K\bar{K}\pi$ mass of $\sim 2040$ MeV, there is a second peak with width $\sim 400$ MeV; $J^P = 0^-$ is preferred over $1^+$ and $2^-$ respectively by 5.2 and 6.8 standard deviations. It is a possible candidate for a $0^-$ $s\bar sg$ hybrid partner of $\pi(1800)$.

BES data on $J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-)$ are presented. The $K^*\bar K^*$ contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a broad $0^{-+}$ resonance with mass $M = 1800 \pm 100$ MeV, width $\Gamma = 500 \pm 200$ MeV. A broad $2^{++}$ resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required with width $\sim 500$ MeV. There is further evidence for a $2^{-+}$ component peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non-$K^*\bar K^*$ contribution is close to phase space; it peaks at 2.6 GeV and is very different from $K^{*}\bar{K^{*}}$.

A partial wave analysis of BES J/psi --> gamma(eta pi(+)pi(-)) data has been performed in the mass region 1.1 to 2.0 GeV. A peak is observed due to eta(1440) in the eta pi(+)pi(-) invariant mass distribution; J(P) = 0(-) is preferred over li. Its mass is M = 1385 +/- 7 MeV and it decays into both eta sigma and a(0)(980)pi, with BR[a(0)(980)pi, a(0) --> eta pi/eta sigma] = 0.70 +/- 0.12(stat) +/- 0.20(syst). Destructive interference between the two decay modes is observed. In addition, in the higher eta pi(+)pi(-) mass region, there is a definite 2(-+) signal, with M = 1840 +/- 15 MeV and Gamma = 170 +/- 40 MeV and an additional 0(-+) signal at 1760 +/- 35 MeV. We also find a possible contribution from a 1(++) signal decaying dominantly through a(0)(980)pi; its mass and width are fitted to be M = 1505 +/- 20 MeV and Gamma = 130(-20)(+50) MeV. The light scalar Higgs boson h and the pseudoscalar Higgs boson A of the minimal supersymmetric standard model have been searched for in the processes e+e−→hff and e+e−→hA using data collected by ALEPH at the LEP e+e− collider, with center of mass energies at and near the Z peak. Using a variety of signatures adapted to various mass ranges for h and A, we have excluded a large domain in the parameter space. For large values of ν2ν1, the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs fields, the whole range from 0 to 38.8 GeV is excluded for Mh and MA at 95% CL.

We have performed a search for supersymmetric particles using acoplanar pairs of oppositely-charged particles in decays of the Z0. In 0.53 pb−1 of integrated luminosity near the Z0 peak, we observe two events where approximately four are expected from background, allowing limits to be extended on combined photino and slepton masses, and also on combined photino and chargino masses.

We report on properties of hadronic events from e+e− annihilation observed by the ALEPH detector at the large Electron Positron Collider at CERN. The center-of-mass energy was . Measured distributions of the global event-shape variables sphericity, aplanarity, thrust and minor value, and of the inclusive variables xp, p⊥in, p⊥out and y are presented. We measure a mean charged multiplicity in hadronic events of 〈Nch〉=21.3±0.1 (statistical)±0.6 (systematic). The data are in good agreement with QCD-based models which use the leading-logarithm approximation, and are less well described by a model using O(αs2) QCD.

The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described. Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Due to the severity of system-wide power outages, though their probability of occurrence is slight, regulatory authorities require that a system restoration plan be drawn up and kept up to date at all times. The power outage that affected northeastern North America in 2003 proved the need for such a requirement. The particular structure of Hydro-Quebec's power system requires the use of a highly specific system restoration procedure. The daily preparation of the system restoration plan is based on a strategy whose application requires that a restoration sequence be drawn up that uses available equipment, the electrical behavior of which has been validated using appropriate studies. Over the years, Hydro-Quebec has accumulated a sizeable pool of knowledge that brings together all the solutions already studied. System restoration planners use their know-how to find the best solution, determine whether it is appropriate, and proceed to apply it. When required, new solutions must be developed. The new RECRE software program (French acronym for “Remise En Charge du Reseau” – System Restoration) has been implemented by Hydro-Quebec in 2005. The aim of this knowledge management system is to have system restoration knowledge become a tangible, growth-oriented and enhanceable asset. The system is made up of two modules: the knowledge engineering module, whereby modeling can be done of the system restoration strategy and known solutions in a knowledge base, and the planning module, whereby system restoration plans can be drawn up based on the unavailability of power system equipment. The RECRE system can produce a validated and adequate plan in a few seconds along with all the documents required for its dissemination. The RECRE system can also analyze in a few minutes all of the situations that apply to scheduled outages for the weeks that follow or the upcoming year. This allows solution gaps to be identified in the knowledge base.

The ratios of the numbers of Z bosons decaying to e+e−, μ+μ− and τ+τ− pairs to the number decaying to hadrons have been measured. The branching ratios and partial widths for each channel were determined and found to be equal, consistent with lepton universality. The mean leptonic branching ratio was found to be 0.0321 ± 0.0013 and the leptonic partial width to be 85.4 ± 5.3 MeV. The partial widths for hadronic decays and for invisible decays were deduced to be 1833 ± 116 MeV and 569 ± 92 MeV, respectively. The number of light neutrino types, assuming only the standard model value for the ratio Θ e Θ v , was found to be 3.35 ± 0.41.

Process-centred Software Engineering Environments (PSEE) are the most recent generation of environments supporting software development activities. Most of PSEE are based on mechanisms promoting enforcement and automation of process activities. In this kind of mechanisms the process models are prescribed in a detailed and complete way. But the experience shows that supporting processes is more concerned with the flexibility of guidance offered during the process performance than with enforcement of a collection of predefined process models. In this paper, we present a solution to support strategic processes in a PSEE by providing a flexible guidance during process enactment.

A search for the neutral Higgs boson in the mass range above 11 GeV (above the H 0 →b b threshold), using the process Z0→H0e+e−, Z0→H0μ+μ− and Z 0 → H 0 v v , is performed on data collected by the ALEPH detector corresponding to about 25 000 events of Z0→ hadrons. Combining all these processes, the mass range excluded is 11 GeV at 95% CL. Together with a previously published result from ALEPH, the mass range excluded is 32 MeV to 24 GeV at 95% CL. This result also extends the excluded mass region for neutral Higgs bosons from supersymmetry.

The process J/\psi --> p \bar{p} is studied using 57.7 X 10^6 J/\psi events collected with the BESII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The branching ratio is determined to be Br(J/\psi --> p \bar{p})=(2.26 +- 0.01 +- 0.14) X 10^{-3}, and the angular distribution is well described by \frac{dN}{d cos\theta_p}=1+\alpha\cos^2\theta_p with \alpha = 0.676 +- 0.036 +- 0.042, where \theta_p is the angle between the proton and beam directions. The value of \alpha obtained is in good agreement with the predictions of first-order QCD.
