Abstract: Since the 2018 IAEA FEC Conference, FTU operations have been devoted to several experiments covering a large range of topics, from the investigation of the behaviour of a liquid tin limiter to the runaway electrons mitigation and control and to the stabilization of tearing modes by electron cyclotron heating and by pellet injection. Other experiments have involved the spectroscopy of heavy metal ions, the electron density peaking in helium doped plasmas, the electron cyclotron assisted start-up and the electron temperature measurements in high temperature plasmas. The effectiveness of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy system has been demonstrated and the new capabilities of the runaway electron imaging spectrometry system for in-flight runaways studies have been explored. Finally, a high resolution saddle coil array for MHD analysis and UV and SXR diamond detectors have been successfully tested on different plasma scenarios.

Abstract: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is one of the most promising methods for quantitative in-situ determination of fuel retention in plasma-facing components (PFCs) of magnetically confined fusion devices like ITER and JET. In this article, the current state of understanding in LIBS development for fusion applications will be presented, based on a complete review of existing results and complemented with newly obtained data. The work has been performed as part of a research programme, set up in the EUROfusion Consortium, to address the main requirements for ITER: (a) quantification of fuel from relevant surfaces with high sensitivity, (b) the technical demonstration to perform LIBS with a remote handling system and (c) accurate detection of fuel at ambient pressures relevant for ITER. For the first goal, the elemental composition of ITER-like deposits and proxies to them, including deuterium (D) or helium (He) containing W–Be, W, W–Al and Be–O–C coatings, was successfully determined with a typical depth resolution ranging from 50 up to 250 nm per laser pulse. Deuterium was used as a substitute for tritium (T) and in the LIBS experiments deuterium surface densities below 1016 D/cm2 could be measured with an accuracy of ∼30%, confirming the required high sensitivity for fuel-retention investigations. The performance of different LIBS configurations was explored, comprising LIBS systems based on single pulse (pulse durations: ps–ns) and double pulse lasers with different pulse durations. For the second goal, a remote handling application was demonstrated inside the Frascati-Tokamak-Upgrade (FTU), where a compact, remotely controlled LIBS system was mounted on a multipurpose deployer providing an in-vessel retention monitor system. During a shutdown phase, LIBS was performed at atmospheric pressure, for measuring the composition and fuel content of different area of the stainless-steel FTU first wall, and the titanium zirconium molybdenum alloy tiles of the toroidal limiter. These achievements underline the capability of a LIBS-based retention monitor, which complies with the requirements for JET and ITER operating in DT with a beryllium wall and a tungsten divertor. Concerning the capabilities of LIBS at pressure conditions relevant for ITER, quantitative determination of the composition of PFC materials at ambient pressures up to 100 mbar of N2, the D content could be determined with an accuracy of 25%, while for atmospheric pressure conditions, an accuracy of about 50% was found when using single-pulse lasers. To improve the LIBS performance in atmospheric pressure conditions, a novel approach is proposed for quantitative determination of the retained T and the D/T ratio. This scenario is based on measuring the LIBS plume emission at two different time delays after each laser pulse. On virtue of application of a double pulse LIBS system, for LIBS application at N2 atmospheric pressure the distinguishability of the spectra from H isotopes could be significantly improved, but further systematic research is required.

Abstract: Due to its exceptional physical properties, synthetic diamond is an ideal material for the realization of UV and X-ray detectors to be used for the characterization of laser-generated plasmas. Diamond detectors are able to operate at high temperatures and in the presence of high fluxes of ionizing radiation, where traditional silicon-based detectors usually fail. In this paper, we report on Raman and electro-optical characterization of a structure consisting of intrinsic diamond/boron-doped diamond homoepitaxially grown by chemical vapor deposition onto a commercial high pressure high temperature Ib-type diamond substrate using a 1% CH4/H2 gas mixture. A metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) diode was obtained by thermally evaporating an aluminum contact on the growth surface of the intrinsic layer. Abstract: A number of diamond detectors, obtained by a two-step growing procedure by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique, have been grown on a low cost commercial high temperature high pressure (HTHP) Ib single crystal diamond. The first diamond layer is 15 mu m thick and heavily doped by boron. A 35 mum thick layer of intrinsic high purity and high quality CVD diamond is then grown on top of the doped diamond. A metal contact (aluminium 100 nm thick) is deposited on top of the intrinsic diamond. One of these devices has been placed in the beam of the station 9.1 of Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury laboratory (UK) and several tests have been performed to assess the linearity of responsivity as a function of the photon flux, the long term stability, and the response to the sudden onset of radiation. The device shows an excellent linearity and long term stability (tested in the order of hours), while the response to the onset of radiation have still to be understood. The results obtained can open up the path to the construction of extremely radiation hard devices to be exploited as X-ray beam monitor.

Abstract: This paper reports on the three new Single Crystal Diamond (SCD) detectors installed at JET for the 2008 Restart campaign. The yields of total neutrons produced during DD plasma pulses as well as the time dependent neutron emission have been measured. The three detectors present some main new developments as for their fabrication characteristics, embeddings and electronic chains. The first detector is 200 μm thick and is embedded in paraffin. The second detector is 104 μm thick and is covered by a thermally evaporated 3 μm thick 6 LiF film in order to detect the total and the 14-MeV neutrons. In addition, it is surrounded by a 2.5-cm thick polyethylene shield to enhance its thermal neutron response. The third detector is operated in an innovative way that is with a single low capacitance super-screened cable and its whole electronic chain put outside the JET Torus Hall. Abstract: We report on extreme UV (EUV) photodetectors based on CVD single crystal diamond in a p-type/intrinsic/metal configuration fabricated and tested at Roma “Tor Vergata” University laboratory, operating in a sandwich geometry. Particular care has been devoted to the design of the device geometry in order to take advantage of the internal junction electric field and to minimize the signal contribution arising from secondary electron emission, which is known to strongly affect the detection properties in the UV and EUV regions. The device has been characterized in the EUV spectral region by using both He and He–Ne DC gas discharge radiation sources and a toroidal grating vacuum monochromator, with 5 A wavelength resolution. The reproducibility test has been performed on several photodetectors showing a high uniformity of the device performances. The devices showed negligible undesired effects such as persistent photocurrent and memory effects, resulting in extremely promising stability features of the p-type/intrinsic/metal structured device. The devices have been tested at different bias voltages between 0 and 15 V, showing the best performances at 0 bias voltage. Finally, the external quantum efficiency (EQE), as well as the responsivity have been measured in the range 20 to 100 nm.

Abstract: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the dosimetric properties of synthetic single crystal diamond dosimeters developed at Rome “Tor Vergata” University in different radiation therapy techniques. The detectors were firstly characterized in terms of electrical properties by means of C-V and I-V curves. A dosimetric characterization was performed both in reference condition and under high energy electron and proton beams. In all the utilized techniques, the detector showed high reproducibility, linearity, independence on the radiation energy and dose rate. The obtained results indicate that diamond dosimeters are suitable for a very wide range of radiation therapy application, making such devices very versatile tools for precise dose measurements in clinical therapeutic applications.

Abstract: Diamond based thermal neutron flux monitors have been fabricated using single crystal diamond films, grown by chemical vapour deposition. A 3 μm thick 6 LiF layer was thermally evaporated on the detector surface as a converting material for thermal neutron monitoring via the 6 Li(n, α) T nuclear reaction. The detectors were tested in a fission nuclear reactor. One of them was positioned 80 cm above the core midplane, where the neutron flux is 2.2 x 10 9 neutrons/cm 2 s at 1 MW resulting in a device count rate of about 150000 cps. Good stability and reproducibility of the device output were proved over the whole reactor power range (up to 1 MW). During the irradiation, several pulse height spectra were recorded, in which both products of the 6 Li(n, a) T reaction, e.g. 2.73 MeV tritium and the 2.06 MeV a, were clearly identified, thus excluding a degradation of the detector response. A comparison with a reference fission chamber monitor pointed out a limitation of the adopted readout electronics at high count rates, due to multiple pile-up processes. However, once this effect is properly accounted for, a good linearity of the diamond flux monitor response is observed as a function of the fission chamber one, as well as an excellent agreement between the temporal behaviour of the two detector response.

9. Optical anisotropy of oxidized InAs() surfaces

Abstract: Reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) has been applied to study the oxidation of decapped InAs(0 0 1) surfaces at roomtem perature. (2 � 4) and (4 � 2) surfaces were prepared in ultra high vacuumby annealing, and then exposed to increasing amounts of molecular oxygen. During exposure to gas, RAS spectral structures at 2.4 eV in (2 � 4) and at 1.7 eV in (4 � 2) are progressively reduced. After about 1 � 10 4 L, a broad residual anisotropy spectrumis still m easured for (2 � 4), while relic anisotropy is nearly null for (4 � 2). Residual features are visible at bulk critical points (E1, E1 þ D1 and E 0 ). The different behavior versus gas contamination evidences the origin of RAS spectral structures, allowing interpretation in terms of surface-state or bulk transitions (the latter modified by the surface). By using Kramers–Kronig relations, the anisotropy of the imaginary part of the surface dielectric function (De 00 ) between [ 1 ] and [1 1 0] directions of the substrate has been obtained fromRAS data. We conclude that the main RAS structures (at 2.4 eV in (2 � 4), at 1.7 eV in (4 � 2)) are related to the surface reconstruction, although only the latter is a transition involving true surface states. We observe bulk contributions in coincidence with critical points (E1, E1 þ D1 and E 0 ). 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

10. Contact X-ray microscopy of living cells by using LiF crystal as imaging detector

Abstract: In this paper, the use of lithium fluoride (LiF) as imaging radiation detector to analyse living cells by single-shot soft X-ray contact microscopy is presented. High resolved X-ray images on LiF of cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya VRUC135, two unicellular microalgae of the genus Chlamydomonas and mouse macrophage cells (line RAW 264.7) have been obtained utilizing X-ray radiation in the water window energy range from a laser plasma source. The used method is based on loading of the samples, the cell suspension, in a special holder where they are in close contact with a LiF crystal solid-state X-ray imaging detector. After exposure and sample removal, the images stored in LiF by the soft X-ray contact microscopy technique are read by an optical microscope in fluorescence mode. The clear image of the mucilaginous sheath the structure of the filamentous Leptolyngbya and the visible nucleolus in the macrophage cells image, are noteworthiness results. The peculiarities of the used X-ray radiation and of the LiF imaging detector allow obtaining images in absorption contrast revealing the internal structures of the investigated samples at high spatial resolution. Moreover, the wide dynamic range of the LiF imaging detector contributes to obtain high-quality images. In particular, we demonstrate that this peculiar characteristic of LiF detector allows enhancing the contrast and reveal details even when they were obscured by a nonuniform stray light.

Abstract: An improved thermal and fast neutrons detector is obtained, modifying a recently proposed multilayered homoepitaxial Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond detector (M. Marinelli, et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 89 (2006) 143509), where a 6LiF layer deposited on the sensing layer was used to convert thermal neutrons into charged particles. By sandwiching this layer between two CVD diamond detectors connected in parallel, a better signal-to-background separation is achieved. This allows to use 10B as converting element, so to realize a detector suitable for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy dosimetry. Also, the doubled detector volume enhances the sensitivity to fast neutrons.

Abstract: We report on a new solid state dosimeter based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single crystal diamond fabricated at Roma "Tor Vergata" University laboratories. The dosimeter has been specifically designed for direct neutron dose measurements in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The response to thermal neutrons of the proposed diamond dosimeter is directly due to (10)B and, therefore, the dosimeter response is directly proportional to the boron absorbed doses in BNCT. Two single crystal diamond detectors are fabricated in a p-type/intrinsic/metal configuration and are sandwiched together with a boron containing layer in between the metallic contacts (see Fig.1). Neutron irradiations were performed at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) using the 2.5 MeV neutrons produced through the D(d,n)(3)He fusion reaction. Thermal neutrons were then produced by slowing down the 2.5 MeV neutrons using a cylindrical polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) moderator. The diamond dosimeter was placed in the center of the moderator. The products of (10)B(n,alpha)Li nuclear reaction were collected simultaneously giving rise to a single peak. Stable performance, high reproducibility, high efficiency and good linearity were observed.

Abstract: Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) is a versatile and powerful optical instrument which is gaining a strong increase of interest for biological investigations and also for the characterization of materials, microstructures and devices. We exploit its capability for the characterization of light‐emitting micro and nano‐structures based on color centers in lithium fluoride. CLSM was successfully used as an advanced optical reading system to detect X‐ray micro‐radiographies of biological specimens stored in LiF imaging detectors.

Abstract: A synthetic single crystal diamond based dosimeter in a p-type/intrinsic/metal structure, operating in photovoltaic regime, is proposed for application in highly conformed radiotherapy dosimetry. The device was characterized by using 6 and 10 MV Bremsstrahlung X-ray beams and electron beams from 6 MeV up to 18 MeV, obtained by a CLINAC DHX Varian accelerator. All measurements were performed in a water phantom and commercial ionization chambers were used for calibration and comparison. Results showed a very good agreement of the diamond device response, as compared with the reference dosimeters, fast response times and high spatial resolution. One of such diamond dosimeters was then tested using a real Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) prostate cancer treatment plan and its performance was compared with the ones from ionization chambers and a 2D diode array. The obtained results clearly assess the suitability of synthetic single crystal diamond for dose measurements in highly conformed radiotherapy and particularly in IMRT applications.

Abstract: This paper reports about state-of-the-art artificial Single Crystal Diamond (SCD) neutron detectors based on a multilayered structure and grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique. Multilayered SCD detectors covered with a thin layer of 6LiF allow the simultaneous detection of both slow and fast neutrons and can operate in pulse and current mode. These detectors can also be produced with a thin layer of Boron. Application of SCD detectors to neutron detection around fusion tokamak is reported. Some problems related to the processing of the very fast electrical pulse produced by diamond are addressed and the achieved and foreseen development of the processing electronics is reported as well.

Abstract: Compact solid-state detectors based on CVD single-crystal diamonds (SCD), configured in a p-type/intrinsic/Schottky-metal layered structure, are proposed for the detection of high-energy ions at the 15-MV tandem accelerator of the Southern National Laboratory of INFN in Catania. The spectroscopic response of two thin-film SCD detectors has been studied by varying the angle of incidence of a 27–77 MeV 12C-scattered ion beam and a simple theoretical model is reported for the fit of the experimental curves of the collected energy vs. the angle of incidence. A rough estimation of the detector sensitive thickness and of the charge collection efficiency has thus been obtained.

Abstract: Since the 2012 IAEA-FEC Conference, FTU operations have been largely devoted to runaway electrons generation and control, to the exploitation of the 140GHz electron cyclotron (EC) system and to liquid metal limiter elements. Experiments on runaway electrons have shown that the measured threshold electric field for their generation is larger than predicted by collisional theory and can be justified considering synchrotron radiation losses. A new runaway electrons control algorithm was developed and tested in presence of a runaway current plateau, allowing to minimize the interactions with plasma facing components and safely shut down the discharges. The experimental sessions with 140GHz EC system have been mainly devoted to experiments on real-time control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities using the new EC launcher with fast steering capability. Experiments with central EC injection have shown the onset of 3/2 and 2/1 tearing modes, while EC assisted breakdown experiments have been focused on ITER start-up issues, exploring the polarization conversion at reflection from inner wall and the capability to assure plasma start-up even in presence of a large stray magnetic field. A new actively cooled lithium limiter has been installed and tested. The lithium limiter was inserted in the scrape-off layer, without any damage to the limiter surface. First elongated FTU plasmas with EC additional heating were obtained with the new cooled limiter. Density peaking and controlled MHD activity driven by neon injection were investigated at different plasma parameters. A full real-time algorithm for disruption prediction, based on MHD activity signals from Mirnov coils, was developed exploiting a large database of disruptions. Reciprocating Langmuir probes were used to measure the heat flux e-folding length in the scrape-off layer, with the plasma kept to lay on thea internal limiter to resemble the ITER start-up phase. New diagnostics were successfully installed and tested, as a diamond probe to detect Cherenkov radiation produced by fast electrons and a gamma camera for runaway electrons studies. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy measurements were performed under vacuum and with toroidal magnetic field, so demonstrating their capability to provide useful information on the surface elemental composition and fuel retention in present and future tokamaks, such as ITER. © 2015 EURATOM.

Abstract: A thin epitaxial single crystal CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposited) diamond detector has been used in order to monitor the X-ray pulses coming out from a standard, portable, medical X-ray apparatus. The current pulses have been acquired and digitized in order to obtain the pulse shape, timing and dose. The obtained data were successfully compared with standard X-ray monitors like air ionization chambers and silicon detector arrays. The results strongly suggest a possible use of CVD epitaxial diamond in the field of X-ray diagnostics for energies up to 120 keV and doses up to 125 mGy and for X-ray pulse timing from 0.1 s or below and 2 s or more.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing.
