The Drell-Yan process at hadron colliders is a fundamental benchmark for the study of strong interactions and the extraction of electro-weak parameters. The outstanding precision of the LHC demands very accurate theoretical predictions with a full account of fiducial experimental cuts. In this letter we present a state-of-the-art calculation of the fiducial cross section and of differential distributions for this process at third order in the strict fixed-order expansion in the strong coupling, as well as including the all-order resummation of logarithmic corrections. Together with these results, we present a detailed study of the subtraction technique used to carry out the calculation for different sets of experimental cuts, as well as of the sensitivity of the fiducial cross section to infrared physics. We find that residual theory uncertainties are reduced to the percent level and that the robustness of the predictions can be improved by a suitable adjustment of fiducial cuts., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 Table + suppl. material

We extend the geneva Monte Carlo framework using the transverse momentum of a color-singlet system as the resolution variable. This allows us to use next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (N3LL) resummation via the radish formalism to obtain precise predictions for any color-singlet production process at the fully exclusive level. Thanks to the implementation of two different resolution variables within the geneva framework, we are able to assess the impact of such a choice on differential observables for the first time. As a first application, we present predictions for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD interfaced to a parton shower simulation that includes additional all-order radiative corrections. We provide fully showered and hadronized events using pythia8, while retaining the NNLO QCD accuracy for observables which are inclusive over the additional radiation. We also show that it is possible to obtain a numerically good agreement between showered geneva predictions and the N3LL resummation for the transverse momentum spectrum by choosing a more local recoil scheme. We compare our final predictions to LHC data at 13 TeV, finding good agreement across several distributions.

We present NNFF1.1h, a new determination of unidentified charged-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) and their uncertainties. Experimental measurements of transverse-momentum distributions for charged-hadron production in proton-(anti)proton collisions at the Tevatron and at the LHC are used to constrain a set of FFs originally determined from electron–positron annihilation data. Our analysis is performed at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We find that the hadron-collider data is consistent with the electron–positron data and that it significantly constrains the gluon FF. We verify the reliability of our results upon our choice of the kinematic cut in the hadron transverse momentum applied to the hadron-collider data and their consistency with NNFF1.0, our previous determination of the FFs of charged pions, kaons, and protons/antiprotons.

We consider the production of a pseudo-scalar particle A at the LHC, and present accurate theoretical predictions for its inclusive cross section in gluon fusion. The prediction is based on combining fixed-order perturbation theory and all-order threshold resummation. At fixed order we include the exact next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) plus an approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO A ) which is based on the recent computation at this order for the scalar case. We then add threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy (N 3 LL ′ ). Various forms of threshold resummation are considered, differing by the treatment of subleading terms, allowing a robust estimate of the theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher orders. With particular attention to pseudo-scalar masses of 200 and 750 GeV, we also observe that perturbative convergence is much improved when resummation is included. Additionally, results obtained with threshold resummation in direct QCD are compared with analogous results as computed in soft-collinear effective theory, which turn out to be in good agreement. We provide precise predictions for pseudo-scalar inclusive cross section at 13 TeV LHC for a wide range of masses. The results are available through updated versions of the public codes ggHiggs and TROLL.

We derive the three loop soft function for inclusive Higgs production in gluon fusion, and use it to perform the resummation of the Higgs cross section at N3LL′ in soft-collinear effective theory. We improve the accuracy of the resummation by including contributions of collinear origin. We include finite top, bottom and charm mass effect where available. These results are available through the public code ResHiggs.

PURPOSE We evaluated the antiemetic efficacy of tropisetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, during its compassionate use in children with malignant disease who during previous chemotherapy cycles experienced emesis refractory to metoclopramide-based treatments. PATIENTS AND METHODS Tropisetron was given to 15 children (eight boys and seven girls 18 months to 18 years of age) with miscellaneous neoplasms. Generally 5 mg/day of tropisetron was administered i.v. the first day of cisplatin-based chemotherapy and i.v. or orally each subsequent day of chemotherapy. The dose of tropisetron was reduced to 2 mg/day in children < 2 years of age and weighing < 20 kg. RESULTS Vomiting was well controlled (no more than two episodes per day) on 118 of the 184 days of treatment with tropisetron (64%). No clinically important variations were observed in blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, or electrocardiographic findings attributable to tropisetron. Transient, mild to moderate side effects (headache, constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea) occurred in five patients on 11 of the 184 days of tropisetron treatment (6%). CONCLUSION The results obtained during compassionate use of tropisetron confirm that it is a valid, safe, and manageable antiemetic for the treatment of pediatric patients.

Our experience with palliative [131I]metabenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG) therapy in 7 patients (6 children and 1 adult) affected by advanced neuroblastoma is reported. All patients (classified as IV stage) showed a progression following initial intensive therapy, including chemotherapy and, in some cases, hemi-body irradiation and surgery for their primary tumor. 131I-MIBG activity ranged for a single course between 2.77 GBq to 5.55 GBq on the basis of age, intensity of uptake, and the hematological assessment. Four patients received only one course of therapy due to progressive disease (2), early death (1) or persistent thrombocytopenia unrelated to 131I-MIBG therapy (1). Two patients received two courses and showed a partial response lasting 4 months and stable disease lasting 3 months respectively. Therapy was thereafter discontinued due to progression. One patient received 4 courses of therapy (cumulative activity = 19.61 GBq) in 5 months. A partial response for 9 months in the bone metastases was documented, but the therapy was discontinued due to persistent thrombocytopenia (58,000 plts/microL) lasting 4 months. Thrombocytopenia was the major side-effect, occurring in 5/7 patients over 8 courses of therapy for a mean period of 37 days (7-120 d). Thus, in our experience thrombocytopenia is the major factor limiting the therapeutic effect of 131I-MIBG therapy in palliative treatment.

Our experience with [131I]metaiodobenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG) therapy in a 10 year old boy is reported. At disease onset, in May 1988, this boy presented a large mass in the upper left abdominal quadrant, which was resected with a histopathological diagnosis of extra-adrenal malignant pheochromocytoma (paraganglioma). He subsequently underwent two further surgical resections and chemotherapy. When 131I-MIBG therapy was started, in June 1990, skeletal and abdominal metastases were present. These localizations were revealed by 131I-MIBG scans and confirmed by x-ray examination. At present 6 courses of therapy have been performed with a cumulative activity of 29.6 GBq. Side-effects have been limited to vomiting and mild thrombocytopenia, lasting 2 weeks during the second course of therapy. After 15 months of therapy, a progressive reduction of MIBG uptake, coupled with a stabilization of the lythic lesions, has been observed.

In sarcoidosis the excess of calcitriol of extrarenal origin induces changes in calcium metabolism (CM), specifically hypercalciuria and less often hypercalcemia. We report the results of the study of CM in 44 sarcoidosis patients (mean age 43.7 +/- 11 years, M +/- SD, 21 males). 25% were on steroid therapy at the time of the tests. 34% of the patients had hypercalciuria, this figure rose to 39% if only untreated patients were considered. Hypercalcemia was found in only 2.2%. Chronic forms and extrathoracic involvement (mostly skin) were more frequent in the hypercalciuric patients than in the normocalciuric.

Circulating immune complexes (CIC) were found in 47% of 71 patients before treatment, in a horizontal study of the presence of CIC in primary lung cancer (PLC). The precipitation technique in PEG was used, and C1q, IgG and IgM fractions in the precipitate were assayed. Especially in epidermoid carcinoma, CIC were found in 1/6 cases with stage 1, 2/9 with stage II and 21/34 with stage III. The frequency was significantly higher in stage III cases, and showed a significant tendency to increase with progression of the clinical stage. If stage parameters are considered separately, this tendency correlates significantly (p less than 0.002) with the amount of lymph node involvement (N) but not to the tumor (T) size nor to the presence of metastases (M). Analysis of CIC behavior in comparison with the single fractions showed that C1q and/or IgG were elevated in 40% of cases. The presence of C1q and/or IgG associated with IgM is more characteristic of stage N2, while the presence of CIC with the fractions C1q and/or IgG not associated with IgM is more frequent in stage N1. There was a lower survival rate at 12 months in patients with CIC as compared to those without (p less than 0.05).

Data are presented from light and electron microscopic studies on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAC) in sarcoidosis, with particular emphasis on the ultrastructural morphology and functional characteristics of pulmonary macrophages (PM) and small mononuclear cells (SMC). Light microscopy showed an average of over 77% of the BAC to be PM, range 99-51%. SMC populations were also extremely variable. These variations may relate directly to the degree of disease activity. Electron microscopy demonstrated a wide range of morphological and implied functional (biosynthetic and phagocytic) characteristics of PM. Some of these are morphologically comparable to cells found in tissue granulomata. Our ultrastructural study has shown that the SMC population is made up of lymphocytes, monocytes and cells with intermediate characteristics (precursors).

Differentiation between diffuse lung tumours and interstitial pulmonary diseases often requires open lung biopsy. We report two cases of bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma presenting as diffuse pulmonary disease, in which the diagnosis was made by cytological examination of bronchoalveolar lavage. Bronchoalveolar lavage can, thus, differentiate between diffuse lung tumours and interstitial pulmonary diseases.

In sera of 38 patients with sarcoidosis, assayed for antiviral antibody to Rubella, Measles, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), different incidence of seropositivity have been found, according to the virus assayed. Interestingly all patients were seropositive to rubella virus with high titres compared to data obtained from normal age matched population. These data indicate that in Sarcoidosis an altered antibody response of post-primary type can be found.

We present state-of-the-art predictions for transverse observables relevant to colour-singlet production at the LHC, in particular the transverse momentum of the colour singlet in gluon-fusion Higgs production and in neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production, as well as the $\phi^*_\eta$ observable in Drell Yan. We perform a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) resummation of such observables in momentum space according to the RadISH formalism, consistently including in our prediction all constant terms of relative order $\alpha_s^3$ with respect to the Born, thereby achieving N$^3$LL$^\prime$ accuracy. The calculation is fully exclusive with respect to the Born kinematics, which allows the application of arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlet. We supplement our results with a transverse-recoil prescription, accounting for dominant classes of subleading-power corrections in a fiducial setup. The resummed predictions are matched with fixed-order differential spectra at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy. A phenomenological comparison is carried out with 13 TeV LHC data relevant to the Higgs to di-photon channel, as well as to neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. Overall, the inclusion of ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^3)$ constant terms, and to a lesser extent of transverse-recoil effects, proves beneficial for the comparison of theoretical predictions to data, leaving a residual theoretical uncertainty in the resummation region at the 2-5% level for Drell-Yan observables, and 5-7% in Higgs production., Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures. We present the NNLL$'$ resummed $2$-jettiness distribution for decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson to a $b\bar{b}$-quark pair and to gluons. The calculation exploits a factorisation formula derived using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, in which large logarithms of the $2$-jettiness are resummed by renormalisation group evolution of the hard, soft and jet contributions to the differential decay rate. We match the resummed predictions to the fixed-order NNLO result using the GENEVA framework, extending the validity of the results to all values of the resolution variable and providing a fully exclusive NNLO event generator matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower., 34 pages, 10 figures - matches version published in JHEP

We present the combination of fully differential cross sections for colour-singlet production processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD obtained with MATRIX and all-order resummation through RadISH. This interface allows us to achieve unprecedented accuracy for various transverse observables in $2 \rightarrow 2$ production processes. As an important application we consider $W^+ W^-$ production at the LHC, more precisely the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}\nu_{\ell}{\bar\nu}_{\ell^\prime}+X$ with $\ell'\neq\ell$, and we present resummed predictions for differential distributions in presence of fiducial selection cuts. In particular, we resum the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy and match it to the integrated NNLO cross section. The transverse-momentum spectrum of the leading jet in $W^+ W^-$ production is calculated at NNLO+NNLL accuracy. Finally, the joint resummation for the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair in the presence of a jet veto is performed at NNLO+NNLL. We formulate a general approach to the inclusion of theoretical uncertainties, specifically those related to the missing higher order uncertainty (MHOU), in the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs). We demonstrate how, under quite generic assumptions, theory uncertainties can be included as an extra contribution to the covariance matrix when determining PDFs from data. We then review, clarify, and systematize the use of renormalization and factorization scale variations as a means to estimate MHOUs consistently in deep inelastic and hadronic processes. We define a set of prescriptions for constructing a theory covariance matrix using scale variations, which can be used in global fits of data from a wide range of different processes, based on choosing a set of independent scale variations suitably correlated within and across processes. We set up an algebraic framework for the choice and validation of an optimal prescription by comparing the estimate of MHOU encoded in the next-to-leading order (NLO) theory covariance matrix to the observed shifts between NLO and NNLO predictions. We perform a NLO PDF determination which includes the MHOU, assess the impact of the inclusion of MHOUs on the PDF central values and uncertainties, and validate the results by comparison to the known shift between NLO and NNLO PDFs. We finally study the impact of the inclusion of MHOUs in a global PDF determination on LHC cross-sections, and provide guidelines for their use in precision phenomenology. In addition, we also compare the results based on the theory covariance matrix formalism to those obtained by performing PDF determinations based on different scale choices.

We analyze how maximal entanglement is generated at the fundamental level in QED by studying correlations between helicity states in tree-level scattering processes at high energy. We demonstrate that two mechanisms for the generation of maximal entanglement are at work: i) $s$-channel processes where the virtual photon carries equal overlaps of the helicities of the final state particles, and ii) the indistinguishable superposition between $t$- and $u$-channels. We then study whether requiring maximal entanglement constrains the coupling structure of QED and the weak interactions. In the case of photon-electron interactions unconstrained by gauge symmetry, we show how this requirement allows reproducing QED. For $Z$-mediated weak scattering, the maximal entanglement principle leads to non-trivial predictions for the value of the weak mixing angle $\theta_W$. The parton distribution functions (PDFs) which characterize the structure of the proton are currently one of the dominant sources of uncertainty in the predictions for most processes measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Here we present the first extraction of the proton PDFs that accounts for the missing higher order uncertainty (MHOU) in the fixed-order QCD calculations used in PDF determinations. We demonstrate that the MHOU can be included as a contribution to the covariance matrix used for the PDF fit, and then introduce prescriptions for the computation of this covariance matrix using scale variations. We validate our results at next-to-leading order (NLO) by comparison to the known next order (NNLO) corrections. We then construct variants of the NNPDF3.1 NLO PDF set that include the effect of the MHOU, and assess their impact on the central values and uncertainties of the resulting PDFs., 8 pages, 6 figures, PDF sets available from https://data.nnpdf.science/nnpdf31_th/. Modern parton distribution function fits require an accurate treatment of heavy quark mass effects. In this contribution, we discuss how the FONLL general-mass variable flavour number scheme can be extended to allow for the possibility of a fitted charm PDF. We present results for the Higgsstrahlung process within the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework. We combine the fully differential NNLO calculation with the higher-order resummation in the 0-jettiness resolution variable (beam-thrust). The resulting parton-level events are further showered and hadronised by Pythia8. The beam-thrust resummation is carried out to NNLL$'$ accuracy, which consistently incorporates all singular virtual and real NNLO corrections. It thus provides a natural perturbative connection between the NNLO calculation and the parton shower regime, including a systematic assessment of perturbative uncertainties. In this way, observables which are inclusive over the additional radiation are correct to NNLO, while the description of 0-jet-like resummation variables is improved beyond the parton shower approximation. We present preliminary results for fits of parton distribution functions (PDFs) which include the resummation of small-$x$ logarithms at NLLx accuracy, performed in the NNPDF framework. We observe an improvement in the description of DIS data at small values of Bjorken $x$ when resummation effects are included. The improvement is more marked when comparing NNLO+NLLx fits to NNLO ones, and is particularly noticeable for small-$x$ and small-$Q^2$ HERA inclusive structure functions. The main effect of the resummation is an enhancement of the gluon and singlet PDFs at small-$x$, which persists at high scales., 6 pages, 2 figures. We present an approach to the momentum-space resummation of global, recursive infrared and collinear safe observables featuring kinematic zeros away from the Sudakov limit. In the hadro-production of a generic colour singlet, we consider the family of inclusive observables which do not depend on the rapidity of the radiation, prime examples being the transverse momentum of the singlet, and $\phi^*$ in Drell-Yan pair production. We derive a resummation formula valid up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logaritmic accuracy for the considered observables. This formula reduces exactly to the customary resummation performed in impact-parameter space in the known cases, and it also predicts the correct power-behaved scaling of the cross section in the limit of small value of the observable. We show how this formalism is efficiently implemented by means of Monte Carlo techniques in a fully exclusive generator that allows one to apply arbitrary cuts on the Born variables for any colour singlet, as well as to automatically match the resummed results to fixed-order calculations. As a phenomenological application, we present state-of-the-art predictions for the Higgs-boson transverse-momentum spectrum at the LHC at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed next-to-next-to-leading order., Comment: Added short appendix on small pt scaling

The perturbative description of certain differential distributions across a wide kinematic range requires the matching of fixed-order perturbation theory with resummation of large logarithmic corrections to all orders. We present precise matched predictions for transverse-momentum distributions in Higgs boson (H) and Drell-Yan pair (DY) production as well as for the closely related ϕ η * distribution at the LHC. The calculation is exclusive in the Born kinematics, and allows for arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlets, which is of primary relevance for experimental analyses. Our predictions feature very small residual scale uncertainties and display a good convergence of the perturbative series. We study the indirect constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling that arise from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders. To this purpose, we calculate the two-loop contributions to the $gg \to hh$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h^4$ vertex. Based on our results, we estimate the reach of a $pp$ collider operating at $27 \, {\rm TeV}$ and $100 \, {\rm TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy in constraining the cubic and quartic Higgs self-couplings by measurements of double-Higgs and triple-Higgs production in gluon-fusion., Comment: Final version, to be published in JHEP

We present a new set of parton distributions, NNPDF3.1, which updates NNPDF3.0, the first global set of PDFs determined using a methodology validated by a closure test. The update is motivated by recent progress in methodology and available data, and involves both. On the methodological side, we now parametrize and determine the charm PDF alongside the light-quark and gluon ones, thereby increasing from seven to eight the number of independent PDFs. On the data side, we now include the D0 electron and muon W asymmetries from the final Tevatron dataset, the complete LHCb measurements of W and Z production in the forward region at 7 and 8 TeV, and new ATLAS and CMS measurements of inclusive jet and electroweak boson production. We also include for the first time top-quark pair differential distributions and the transverse momentum of the Z bosons from ATLAS and CMS. We investigate the impact of parametrizing charm and provide evidence that the accuracy and stability of the PDFs are thereby improved. We study the impact of the new data by producing a variety of determinations based on reduced datasets. We find that both improvements have a significant impact on the PDFs, with some substantial reductions in uncertainties, but with the new PDFs generally in agreement with the previous set at the one-sigma level. The most significant changes are seen in the light-quark flavor separation, and in increased precision in the determination of the gluon. We explore the implications of NNPDF3.1 for LHC phenomenology at Run II, compare with recent LHC measurements at 13 TeV, provide updated predictions for Higgs production cross-sections and discuss the strangeness and charm content of the proton in light of our improved dataset and methodology. We present a determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton in which NLO and NNLO fixed-order calculations are supplemented by NLLx small-x resummation. Deep inelastic structure functions are computed consistently at NLO+NLLx or NNLO+NLLx, while for hadronic processes small-x resummation is included only in the PDF evolution, with kinematic cuts introduced to ensure the fitted data lie in a region where the fixed-order calculation of the hard cross-sections is reliable. In all other respects, the fits use the same methodology and are based on the same global dataset as the recent NNPDF3.1 analysis. We demonstrate that the inclusion of small-x resummation leads to a quantitative improvement in the perturbative description of the HERA inclusive and charm-production reduced cross-sections in the small x region. The impact of the resummation in our fits is greater at NNLO than at NLO, because fixed-order calculations have a perturbative instability at small x due to large logarithms that can be cured by resummation. We explore the phenomenological implications of PDF sets with small-x resummation for the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ at HERA, for parton luminosities and LHC benchmark cross-sections, for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleus cross-sections, and for future high-energy lepton-proton colliders such as the LHeC., Comment: 70 pages, many figures. We consider the production of a pseudo-scalar particle A at the LHC, and present accurate theoretical predictions for its inclusive cross section in gluon fusion. The prediction is based on combining fixed-order perturbation theory and all-order threshold resummation. At fixed order we include the exact next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) plus an approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO A ) which is based on the recent computation at this order for the scalar case. We then add threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy (N 3 LL ′ ). Various forms of threshold resummation are considered, differing by the treatment of subleading terms, allowing a robust estimate of the theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher orders. With particular attention to pseudo-scalar masses of 200 and 750 GeV, we also observe that perturbative convergence is much improved when resummation is included. Additionally, results obtained with threshold resummation in direct QCD are compared with analogous results as computed in soft-collinear effective theory, which turn out to be in good agreement. We provide precise predictions for pseudo-scalar inclusive cross section at 13 TeV LHC for a wide range of masses. The results are available through updated versions of the public codes ggHiggs and TROLL.

A detailed study of the impact of the data collected by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) on the parton distribution function (PDF) of the charm quark is presented. The analysis is performed in the NNPDF framework, and the charm PDF is freely parametrized on equal footing as light quark and gluon distributions. We find that variations in the treatment of EMC data do not modify the charm PDF and do not affect our previous conclusion on the presence of an intrinsic component in the charm PDF., 6 pages, 3 figures. The recent observation of very high energy cosmic neutrinos by IceCube heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At these energies, the dominant background to the astrophysical signal is the flux of `prompt' neutrinos, arising from the decay of charmed mesons produced by cosmic ray collisions in the atmosphere. In this work we provide predictions for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux in the framework of perturbative QCD, using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generators. Our calculation includes the constraints set by charm production measurements from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV, and has been recently validated with the corresponding 13 TeV data. Our results for the prompt flux are a factor of about 2 below the previous benchmark calculation, in general agreement with two other recent estimates, and with an improved estimate of the uncertainty. This alleviates the existing tension between the theoretical prediction and IceCube limits, and suggests that a direct direction of the prompt flux is imminent., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures; corrected conventional flux in Fig. 6, to appear in JHEP. We consider the inclusive production of a Higgs boson in gluon-fusion and we study the impact of threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (N$^3$LL) on the recently computed fixed-order prediction at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). We propose a conservative, yet robust way of estimating the perturbative uncertainty from missing higher (fixed- or logarithmic-) orders. We compare our results with two other different methods of estimating the uncertainty from missing higher orders: the Cacciari-Houdeau Bayesian approach to theory errors, and the use of algorithms to accelerate the convergence of the perturbative series. We confirm that the best convergence happens at $\mu_R=\mu_F=m_H\,/\,2$, and we conclude that a reliable estimate of the uncertainty from missing higher orders on the Higgs cross section at 13 TeV is approximately $\pm4$%., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures. The FONLL general-mass variable-flavour number scheme provides a framework for the matching of a calculation in which a heavy quark is treated as a massless parton to one in which the mass dependence is retained throughout. We describe how the usual formulation of FONLL can be extended in such a way that the heavy quark parton distribution functions are freely parameterized at some initial scale, rather than being generated entirely perturbatively. We specifically consider the case of deep-inelastic scattering, in view of applications to PDF determination, and the possible impact of a fitted charm quark distribution on $F_2^c$ is assessed., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. The recent observation by the IceCube experiment of cosmic neutrinos at energies up to a few PeV heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At such high energies, the conventional neutrino flux is suppressed and the prompt component from charm meson decays is expected to become the dominant background to astrophysical neutrinos. Charm production at high energies is however theoretically uncertain, both since the charm mass is at the boundary of applicability of perturbative QCD, and also because the calculations are sensitive to the poorly-known gluon PDF at small-x. In this work we provide detailed perturbative QCD predictions for charm and bottom production in the forward region, and validate them by comparing with recent data from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV. Finding good agreement between data and theory, we use the LHCb measurements to constrain the small-x gluon PDF, achieving a substantial reduction in its uncertainties. Using these improved PDFs, we provide predictions for charm and bottom production at LHCb at 13 TeV, as well as for the ratio of cross-sections between 13 and 7 TeV. The same calculations are used to compute the energy distribution of neutrinos from charm decays in pA collisions, a key ingredient towards achieving a theoretically robust estimate of charm-induced backgrounds at neutrino telescopes., 43 pages, 21 figures. We show how to extend systematically the FONLL scheme for inclusion of heavy quark mass effects in DIS to account for the possible effects of an intrinsic charm component in the nucleon. We show that when there is no intrinsic charm, FONLL is equivalent to S-ACOT to any order in perturbation theory, while when an intrinsic charm component is included FONLL is identical to ACOT, again to all orders in perturbation theory. We discuss in detail the inclusion of top and bottom quarks to construct a variable flavour number scheme, and give explicit expressions for the construction of the structure functions $F^c_2$, $F^c_L$ and $F^c_3$ to NNLO., 43 pages, 1 figure. We construct a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in which fixed-order NLO and NNLO calculations are supplemented with soft-gluon (threshold) resummation up to NLL and NNLL accuracy respectively, suitable for use in conjunction with any QCD calculation in which threshold resummation is included at the level of partonic cross sections. These resummed PDF sets, based on the NNPDF3.0 analysis, are extracted from deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, and top quark pair production data, for which resummed calculations can be consistently used. We find that, close to threshold, the inclusion of resummed PDFs can partially compensate the enhancement in resummed matrix elements, leading to resummed hadronic cross-sections closer to the fixed-order calculations. On the other hand, far from threshold, resummed PDFs reduce to their fixed-order counterparts. We perform a comparison of soft-gluon resummation in SCET vs. direct QCD (dQCD), using Higgs boson production in gluon fusion as a case study, with the goal of tracing the quantitative impact of each source of difference between the two approaches. We show that saddle-point methods enable a direct quantitative comparison despite the fact that the scale which is resummed in the two approaches is not the same. As a byproduct, we put in one-to-one analytic correspondence various features of either approach: specifically, we show how the SCET method for treating the Landau pole can be implemented in dQCD, and how the resummation of the optimal partonic scale of dQCD can be implemented in SCET. We conclude that the main quantitative difference comes from power-suppressed subleading contributions, which could in fact be freely tuned in either approach, and not really characteristic of either. This conclusion holds for Higgs production in gluon fusion, but it is in fact generic for processes with similar kinematics. For Higgs production, everything else being equal, SCET resummation at NNLL in the Becher-Neubert implementation leads to essentially no enhancement of the NNLO cross-section, unlike dQCD in the standard implementation of Catani et al.., 21 pages, 4 figures; final version, to be published in JHEP.
