Nord- und Ostsee liegen räumlich eng beieinander. Sie sind nur durch die lediglich 60–80 km breite, aus quartären Sedimenten bestehende jütische Halbinsel voneinander getrennt. Gleichwohl verlief die Entwicklung beider Meere in der älteren und jüngeren geologischen Vergangenheit sehr unterschiedlich. Dies dokumentiert sich z. B. darin, dass in der Nordsee wirtschaftlich nutzbare Kohlenwasserstofflagerstätten weit verbreitet sind, während solche in der Ostsee nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand so gut wie nicht vorkommen. Die unterschiedliche geologische Entwicklung prägt auch heute noch die Ablagerungsbedingungen in beiden Meeresbecken sowie die Dynamik ihrer Küsten. Während die Nordsee nicht unmittelbar durch das Eis des letzten Glazials beeinflusst wurde, war der gesamte Ostseeraum von Eismassen bedeckt und es kam zu intensiven glazialen Erosions- und Ablagerungsprozessen. Durch die offene Verbindung zum Atlantik verlief der nacheiszeitliche Meeresspiegelanstieg im Nordseeraum zudem recht kontinuierlich und vergleichbar mit dem des übrigen Weltmeers. Im Ostseeraum, der stark durch isostatische Ausgleichsbewegungen geprägt ist, gab es demgegenüber in den vergangenen 12.000 Jahren vier Phasen, in denen sich brackische mit limnischen Bedingungen abwechselten und der Meeresspiegel mehrfach und teilweise in kürzester Zeit um 10er Meter gestiegen und wieder gefallen ist. Das spiegelt sich auch in den Meeresbodensedimenten wider. Zudem sind in einigen Regionen die neotektonischen Bewegungen immer noch prägend für die Küstenentwicklung., The North- and the Baltic Sea are geographically close, only separated by the 60–80 km wide Jutland Peninsula, which is built up of quaternary deposits. Nevertheless, these two oceans underwent different geological evolution in the ancient and younger geological history. This is documented e.g. by the amount of widely distributed and economically recoverable hydrocarbon deposits in the North Sea while those reservoirs rarely occur in the Baltic Sea. The different geological development still today determines the conditions for sediment deposition and coastal development. While the North Sea was not directly influenced by ice during the last glaciation, the whole area of the present-day Baltic Sea and its surrounding was completely covered by ice during the last glacial and intensively shaped by erosional and depositional processes. Due to its open connection to the North Atlantic, the post glacial sea level rise in the North Sea happened mostly continuously and comparable to global conditions. On the other hand, four different phases of alternating limnic and brackish conditions characterize the evolution of the Baltic Sea within the last 12.000 years, an area that is still strongly influenced by postglacial isostatic uplift conditions. The water level was rising and falling in the range of up to tens of meters, partly only during a few years period, which is mirrored in the sea bottom deposits. Joint Research on Environmental Science and Technology for the Earth

The Wadden Sea is one of the most important foraging areas for breeding and migrating birds. However, little is known about the preferred feeding places of birds and how the intense predation pressure influences the food web. Within the project STopP the trophodynamic structure of different Wadden Sea habitats is determined to get an idea how sediment characteristics and hydrodynamics modify habitats that serve as food sources for birds.
