Hybrid photonic integration exploits complementary strengths of different material platforms, thereby offering superior performance and design flexibility in comparison to monolithic approaches. This applies in particular to multi-chip concepts, where components can be individually optimized and tested on separate dies before integration into more complex systems. The assembly of such systems, however, still represents a major challenge, requiring complex and expensive processes for high-precision alignment as well as careful adaptation of optical mode profiles. Here we show that these challenges can be overcome by in-situ nano-printing of freeform beam-shaping elements to facets of optical components. The approach is applicable to a wide variety of devices and assembly concepts and allows adaptation of vastly dissimilar mode profiles while considerably relaxing alignment tolerances to the extent that scalable, cost-effective passive assembly techniques can be used. We experimentally prove the viability of the concept by fabricating and testing a selection of beam-shaping elements at chip and fiber facets, achieving coupling efficiencies of up to 88 % between an InP laser and an optical fiber. We also demonstrate printed freeform mirrors for simultaneously adapting beam shape and propagation direction, and we explore multi-lens systems for beam expansion. The concept paves the way to automated fabrication of photonic multi-chip assemblies with unprecedented performance and versatility.

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging enables early identification of ischemic lesions in stroke. Stroke subtype may be related to different lesion patterns. The aim of this study was to analyze the subtype of ischemic lesions as determined by the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) criteria by using DW MR imaging. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, 510 consecutive patients with ischemic stroke (95%) and transient ischemic attack (5%) aged 65 ± 12 years were investigated by use of DW MR imaging within 48 hours of the clinical onset of symptoms. Lesions on DW imaging were classified as single, scattered, or multiple lesions in one vascular territory and multiple in more than one vascular territory. We found a significant overall association of DW imaging lesion patterns and classification with stroke subtype by using the TOAST criteria (P < .001). Single corticosubcortical lesions (P < .01) and multiple bilateral lesions in the anterior (AC) and posterior circulation (P < .001) on DW imaging were significantly associated with a cardiac embolic source. Multiple unilateral lesions in the AC were significantly associated with large-artery arteriosclerosis. Because of the 15-mm criterion for small-artery occlusion, cryptogenic stroke was significantly associated with subcortical lesions ≥15 mm. CONCLUSION: We found a strong relationship between stroke subtype and DW imaging lesion pattern. The finding of multiple bilateral lesions was significantly associated with a cardiac embolic source, which may be caused by a specific thrombus texture with a tendency for embolus dissemination.

To evaluate the suitability of panoramic radiographs obtained with two different machines for clinical use.Three observers assessed 111 pairs of panoramic radiographs taken with the Scanora (Soredex, Orion Corp., Helsinki, Finland) programme 001, and the Orthophos Plus (Sirona, Bensheim, Germany), programme P1 respectively, for visualisation of seven anatomical structures on each side, on a 5-point scale where 1 = very good. The median values were computed and a descriptive analysis performed. Interrater and intrarater agreement were expressed as weighted kappa.The median values of both Scanora and Orthophos radiographs were the same, scoring 2. The intra- and inter-observer agreement was generally poor and similar for both machines.The two panoramic machines were both given good ratings for evaluation of anatomical structures. The differences were very small and suggest that both machines are suitable for clinical use.

Am Beispiel der Entwicklung eines Simulationsmodells für einen logistikoptimierten Montageprozeß im Schiffmaschinenbau wird der Einsatz der Simulation in der Planung dargestellt.

Alle Ergebnisse waren zusammen mit den Erkenntnissen der Flächen- und Informationsflußanalyse grundlegende Voraussetzungen für die Reorganisationsplanung. Als erstes wurde festgelegt, den Eigenfertigungsanteil drastisch zu reduzieren. Dann waren die Fertigungsstrukturen neu zu gestalten, wobei die Kosten konsequent nach dem Verursacherprinzip zu erfassen waren. Primär fanden die Bauteile Berücksichtigung, die am höchsten an der Wertschöpfung beteiligt waren, die strategische bzw. Know-how Bedeutung haben und die besonderen Prüfbedingungen unterliegen. Diese Planung berücksichtigte neben den schon vorn genannten Zielen die folgenden: -Gestaltung von JIT-Schnittstellen/Lieferbeziehungen, - Senkung des nichtwertschöpfenden Fertigungsanteils bzw. der Fertigungskosten, - Reduzieren des Anlagebestands, - produktorientierte Fertigung, wobei die Prozeßstufen verringert und kleine Regelkreise zu schaffen waren, - Verantwortung nach unten zu verlagern, wo sie überschaubar wahrgenommen werden kan n und eine - Qualitätskontrolle möglichst an den Werker zu übergeben. Mit diesen Zielen wurden mögliche Reorganisatios- und Ausbaustrategien erarbeitet, aus denen sich vier aufeinander bauende, handhabbare Varianten ergaben. Diese Varianten zeigen alle, wie einfache und vordergründig investitionsarme Maßnahmen Effekte zur Kostenreduzierung bringen.

Anhand einer Studie zu einer investitionsarmen Werksreorganisation in einem schiffsmaschinenbauenden Unternehmen wird die Methodologie der Logistikoptimierung beschrieben. Schwerpunkte sind dabei die Fertigungstellenreduzierung, das Lagerwesen, der innerbetriebliche Transport sowie die exakte Kostenanalyse. Das Konzept autarker Fertigungsbereiche als "Fabrik in einer Fabrik" wird vorgestellt.
