International audience; The synthesis and characterization of water-soluble imprinted nanogels with enzyme-like activity in the Kemp elimination is reported together with studies that demonstrate how the recognition properties, morphology, and catalytic activity of the nanoparticles can be tuned by the use of surfactants, such as Tween 20. A detailed kinetic investigation is carried out, which shows clear evidence of saturation kinetics and rule out the effects of mass transfer. This is supported by characterization of the polymeric materials that confirms the morphological changes resulting from the use of surfactants. These results provide an important tool for the development of nanoparticle-based, new catalyst-mimicking enzymes.

The objective of the applied research is the construction of a crossmedia map to discover the agricultural landscape, through the digitization and geo-referencing on Google maps of historical maps and photos of the Cà Granda Foundation Archive. It allows the visualization and immediate accessibility of landscape transformations, in a sort of multimedia journey through time.

Some geometry and combinatorics of orthogonal and symplectic polarities commuting with a unitary polarity are investigated.

Il libro racconta il ruolo di Piacentini nella costruzione del nuovo centro di Bergamo, l’intervento architettonico più esteso e più compiuto realizzato in Italia nel primo quarto del secolo scorso. La narrazione ha inizio con il concorso per la riedificazione della Fiera del 1906 e ricostruisce la storia dei vari edifici che compongono il complesso urbanistico: dalla Banca d’Italia al Palazzo di Giustizia, dal Credito Italiano al palazzo del lotto F, dalla Torre dei Caduti alla Banca Bergamasca, ultimo palazzo ad essere terminato nel 1927. Prosegue poi con il racconto di altri coinvolgimenti dell’architetto nella vita urbanistica di Bergamo, dal concorso per il palazzo del Littorio fino al progetto della Borsa e della BNL nei primi anni Cinquanta. La ricostruzione della Fiera diviene il trampolino di lancio di una straordinaria carriera, che prosegue con le trasformazioni urbane di Brescia, Genova, Milano, Bolzano, Torino, Trieste e Roma.

The enzyme CYP1A2 is responsible for the metabolism of numerous antioxidants in the body, including caffeine, which is transformed into paraxanthine, its main primary metabolite. Both molecules are known for their antioxidant and pro-oxidant characteristics, and the paraxanthine-to-caffeine molar ratio is a widely accepted metric for CYP1A2 phenotyping, to optimize dose&ndash, response effects in individual patients. We developed a simple, cheap and fast electrochemical based method for the simultaneous quantification of paraxanthine and caffeine in human saliva, by differential pulse voltammetry, using an anodically pretreated glassy carbon electrode. Cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed for the first time that the oxidation of paraxanthine is diffusion controlled with an irreversible peak at ca. +1.24 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in a 0.1 M H2SO4 solution, and that the mechanism occurs via the transfer of two electrons and two protons. The simultaneous quantification of paraxanthine and caffeine was demonstrated in 0.1 M H2SO4 and spiked human saliva samples. In the latter case, limits of detection of 2.89 &mu, M for paraxanthine and 5.80 &mu, M for caffeine were obtained, respectively. The sensor is reliable, providing a relative standard deviation within 7% (n = 6). Potential applicability of the sensing platform was demonstrated by running a small scale trial on five healthy volunteers, with simultaneous quantification by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of paraxanthine and caffeine in saliva samples collected at 1, 3 and 6 h postdose administration. The results were validated by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography and shown to have a high correlation factor (r = 0.994).

The synthesis of a novel hapten containing a 1,4-diamino-2,3-diolbutane core unit is described. The molecule contains four stereogenic centres and has been synthesised via a stereoselective route. The absolute stereochemistry of each stereogenic carbon atom has been assigned by nuclear Overhauser effect experiments carried out on a number of derivatives. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
