The mechanism producing psychosis appears to include hippocampal inflammation, which could be associated with the microbiome-gut-brain-axis (MGBS). To test this hypothesis we are conducting a multidisciplinary study, herein described. The procedures are illustrated with testing of a single subject and group level information on the impact of C-section birth are presented. Method Study subjects undergo research diagnostic interviews and symptom assessments to be categorized into one of 3 study groups: psychosis, nonpsychotic affective disorder or healthy control. Hippocampal volume and metabolite concentrations are assessed using 3-dimensional, multi-voxel H1 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRSI) encompassing all gray matter in the entire hippocampal volume. Rich self-report information is obtained with the PROMIS interview, which was developed by the NIH Commons for research in chronic conditions. Early trauma is assessed and cognition is quantitated using the MATRICS. The method also includes the most comprehensive autonomic nervous system (ANS) battery used to date in psychiatric research. Stool and oral samples are obtained for microbiome assessments and cytokines and other substances are measured in blood samples. Results Group level preliminary data shows that C-section birth is associated with higher concentrations of GLX, a glutamate related hippocampal neurotransmitter in psychotic cases, worse symptoms in affective disorder cases and smaller hippocampal volume in controls. Conclusion Mode of birth appears to have persistent influences through adulthood. The methodology described for this study will define pathways through which the MGBA may influence the risk for psychiatric disorders.

Although the biodiversity informatics community has recognized and understood the complexity of modeling information about scientific names and associated taxonomic concepts for more than three decades, many of the original questions and problems remain unresolved today. Because most biodiversity data is anchored to scientific names, and these names are governed by Codes of nomenclature, most effort and progress has focused on data structures centered around scientific names, rather than taxonomic concepts. But, as has been well documented in biodiversity data standards communities (e.g., Berendsohn (1995), Patterson et al. (2010), Pyle et al. (2021)), the relationship between the text-string scientific-name labels and the circumscribed conceptual taxa they are intended to represent is highly imprecise. Many attempts have been made to develop data models to represent taxonomic concepts as discrete, identifiable units to which biodiversity data can be linked. However, none has gained wide-spread adoption, often due to inherent subjective interpretations and the degree of taxonomic expertise required to define and interpret the individual units – aspects that limit their practical scalability. Similarly, previous efforts to develop taxon concept data models conflate properties of circumscription, classification, and nomenclature, resulting in overloaded notions of taxa that quickly become intractable. We describe an approach that mirrors centuries of actual taxonomic practice, rooted in fundamental properties of Code-regulated scientific names, which can leverage sources of existing digital information to represent taxonomic concepts in a highly structured, objective and computable way. It isolates the properties of circumscription from those of classification and nomenclature, but enables algorithmic integration of these three separate facets of taxonomic information using consistent informatic structures.

Populations that become genetically isolated by geographical barriers may express phenotypic divergence more strongly in some traits than in others. Even when genetic differentiation among isolated populations accumulates at a rapid rate, this may not be reflected in phenotypic differentiation. This decoupling of trait divergence from genetic divergence has been found in multiple Andean bird lineages that occupy latitudinally long, linear ranges that are fragmented by ecological and topographic barriers. One of these montane birds is Diglossa cyanea (Thraupidae; Masked Flowerpiercer), a species with a distribution bisected by valleys and lowlands. Across these dispersal barriers one finds subspecies that differ only in subtle but diagnostic phenotypic differences. We evaluated genetic and phenotypic divergence throughout its distribution and found support for two distinct lineages sharply separated by the Maraňón River valley at the Northern Peruvian Low (NPL). Specifically, we found that the two populations from the opposite sides of the NPL show deep divergence in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA; ~6.7% uncorrected p distance, n = 122), in song structure (exclusive final notes in southern populations, n = 88), and in wing length (longer wings in the southern population, n = 364). No genetic variation or song structure was observed within the large range of the southern group (from the NPL to central Bolivia) or within all northern populations (from the NPL to Venezuela). Moreover, these two lineages are possibly paraphyletic with respect to D. caerulescens (Bluish Flowerpiercer). Our results suggest that the southern taxon, D. c. melanopis, should be recognized as a species-level taxon, distinct from a redefined D. cyanea. We highlight the need to continue amassing complementary suites of datasets from field observations and experiments, laboratory analyses, and collection-based assessments, to better characterize the evolutionary history and taxonomic diversity of Neotropical montane birds.

The scale of the Deepwater Horizon disaster was and is unprecedented: geographic extent, pollutant amount, countermeasure scope, and of most relevance to this Research Topic issue, range of ecotypes affected. These ecotypes include coastal/nearshore, continental shelf, deep benthic, and open-ocean domains, the last of which is the subject of this synthesis. The open-ocean ecotype comprises ~90% of the volume of the Gulf of Mexico. The exact percentage of this ecotype contaminated with toxins is unknown due to its three-dimensional nature and dynamics, but estimates suggest that the footprint encompassed most of its eastern half. Further, interactions between the water column and the deep benthos may be persistent, making this synthesis one of time (a decade) rather than event conclusion. Here we examine key elements of the open-ocean ecosystem, with emphasis on vulnerability and resilience. Of paramount importance relative to the Gulf nearshore and shelf ecotypes, pre-disaster baseline data were lacking for most of the fauna. In such cases, inferences were drawn from post-disaster assessments. Both phytoplankton and mesozooplankton vulnerabilities were quite high, but resilience appeared equally so. The phytoplankton situation was a bit more complex in that toxin-imposed reductions may have been offset by nutrient injection via high freshwater discharge in 2010. Intermediate trophic levels exhibited population-level depressions, ostensibly due to high vulnerability and low resilience. Apex predator impacts were variable. Certain large epipelagic fishes may have avoided the highest concentrations of hydrocarbons/dispersant, and thus larval abundances returned to pre-disaster levels of variability and abundance within a few years after a steep initial decline. Oceanic cetaceans, particularly shallow-diving stenellid dolphins, did not appear to avoid oiled waters and exhibited strong declines in the northern Gulf. Given that population declines of many open-ocean taxa appear to be ongoing a decade later, we conclude that this largest of Gulf ecosystem components, like its deep-benthic counterpart, is as fragile as it is voluminous. This is particularly concerning given the rapid, and likely irreversible, shift to deeper waters by the US and Mexican oil industries in concert with the higher likelihood of accidents with increasing platform depth.

Physically meaningful characterization of irregularly shaped particles continues to present substantial challenges to the experimentalist. "Equivalent diameters" based on experimental techniques such as static and dynamic light scattering or sedimentation have proliferated to the point that they are often no longer recognized as equivalent. This study demonstrates the use of dual-fluid disk centrifuge photosedimentometry coupled with rheological measurements of viscosity to provide direct insights into both the average mass of a structured particle size distribution and the average hydrodynamic diameter.

Nanoscale fluorescent probes are of great importance due to their capabilities for imaging on multiscale. Herein, we report the first synthesis of structurally well-defined nanoparticulate “oligodots” developed for multicolor imaging in vitro and in vivo. These nanoparticles are prepared via condensation and curing reactions where the engineering of the solvent results in the nanoparticles with green (λem = 550 nm) and red (λem = 650 nm) emission range. Differences found in the photophysical properties have been attributed to variations in oligomeric compositions produced during the synthesis as was corroborated by extensive physicochemical characterizations. Specifically, mass spectroscopy provided a picture of the formed species during the synthesis. The feasibility of the oligodots for multicolor imaging is demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Sediment cores collected from several stations throughout Lake Baikal in water depths from 100 m off the Selenga River delta to the deepest basin of the lake (~1640 m), have been analyzed for sedimentary organic carbon, nitrogen, and the remineralized components in pore water. The organic carbon content of surface sediments generally varied from 2.3 to 3.2% by weight, and profiles typically showed an exponential decrease in both organic carbon and nitrogen in the upper 20–30 cm of the sediment column. Steady state models of organic matter diagenesis yield first order decomposition rate constants which range from 0.0009 to 0.022 y−1. The calculated residence times for the metabolizable fraction of the organic matter in these sediments increases roughly with increasing water depth and is on the order of 50–300 years. Pore water concentration profiles were determined for dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), methane, and dissolved ammonium. At depth (25–30 cm) methane concentrations ranged from 50 to 800 μmol Lpw−1 and DOC from 400 to 900 μmol Lpw−1. A major area of growth for “nano-enabled” products has been the addition of nanoparticles (NPs) to surface coatings including paints, stains and sealants. Zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs, long used in sunscreens and sunblocks, have found growing use in surface coating formulations to increase their UV resistance, especially on outdoor products. In this work, ZnO NPs, marketed as an additive to paints and stains, were dispersed in Milli-Q water and a commercial deck stain. Resulting solutions were applied to either Micronized-Copper Azole (MCA) pressure treated lumber or a commercially available composite decking. A portion of coated surfaces were placed outdoors to undergo environmental weathering, while the remaining samples were stored indoors to function as experimental controls. Weathered and control treatments were subsequently sampled periodically for 6 months using a simulated dermal contact method developed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The release of ZnO NPs, and their associated degradation products, was determined through sequential filtration, atomic spectroscopy, X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Across all treatments, the percentage of applied zinc released through simulated dermal contact did not exceed 4%, although transformation and release of zinc was highly dependent on dispersion medium. For MCA samples weathered outdoors, water-based applications released significantly more zinc than stain-based, 180 ± 28, and 65 ± 9 mg/m2 respectively. Moreover, results indicate that the number of contact events drives material release.

Geographic range shifts can cause secondary contact and hybridization between closely related species, revealing mechanisms of species formation and integrity. These dynamics typically play out in restricted geographic regions, but highly vagile species may experience major distributional changes resulting in broad areas of contact. The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a dispersive waterbird of the Old World and Australia that colonized eastern North America in the early 19th century and came into contact with the native White-faced Ibis (P. chihi). Putative hybrids between the two species have been observed across North America. To examine the population genomic consequences of this natural invasion, we sequenced 4,616 ultraconserved elements from 66 individuals sampled across the distributions of falcinellus, chihi, and the Puna Ibis (P. ridgwayi) of South America. We found genomic differentiation among the three species. Loci with high sequence divergence were often shared across all pairwise species comparisons, were associated with regions of high nucleotide diversity, and were concentrated on the Z chromosome. We detected signals of genetic admixture between chihi and falcinellus in individuals both near and far from their core area of sympatry. Genomic cline analyses revealed evidence of greater introgression into falcinellus from chihi, but we found little evidence for selection against hybrids. We also found signals of admixture between ridgwayi and South American populations of chihi. Our results indicate vagile species can experience pervasive introgression upon secondary contact, although we suggest these dynamics may be more ephemeral than the stable hybrid zones often observed in less dispersive organisms.

We evaluated the resilience of the zooplankton community to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, by assessing abundance, biomass, spatial distribution, species composition, and diversity indices during spring, summer, and winter, May 2010 to August 2014. SEAMAP samples collected between spring and summer 2005-2009 were analyzed as a baseline. Our results did not indicate that there was a long-term impact from the oil spill, but did demonstrate that environmental variability and riverine processes strongly governed zooplankton community dynamics. Zooplankton abundances during the oil spill (spring 2010) were not significantly different from abundances during spring 2011 and 2012. Summer 2010 abundances were the highest observed for the 2005 to 2014 period, due to high river discharge, high chlorophyll, and aggregation in eddies. High densities of the dinoflagellate, Noctiluca, during the oil spill, and the copepod, Centropages velificatus, and larvaceans in all years, suggest that these taxa warrant further investigation. Ecosystem connectivity (zooplankton transport by currents into the oil spill region), high fecundity, relatively short generation times, and refugia in deeper depths are key factors in zooplankton resilience to major perturbations. This study serves as a baseline for assessment of future impacts to this system.
