Discute mediações pedagógicas da Educação Física com o Ensino Médio, vivenciadas com os Esportes de Aventura, durante o ensino remoto. Em aulas de Educação Física, com duas turmas de Técnico em Meio Ambiente Integrado ao Ensino Médio de uma Instituição Federal em Cuiabá/MT, foram estabelecidos encontros virtuais com os discentes em 2021/1 e 2021/2, por meio de metodologias ativas. As vivências utilizaram ferramentas digitais, relatórios, desenhos e discussões de textos. Os produtos pedagógicos principais dessas experiências foram a construção de guias informativos de turismo, jogos digitais e a elaboração de charges sobre o conteúdo Esportes de Aventura. Constatou-se que o protagonismo, a pesquisa, o posicionamento crítico e o engajamento nos processos de ensino-aprendizagem proporcionaram a produção do conhecimento, de forma compartilhada e ativa entre os discentes, tanto na organização, quanto na prática em aulas de Educação Física durante o ensino remoto.

Objetivo: O estudo teve como objetivo geral avaliar o ponto de vista do estudante de medicina sobre a eutanásia e suicídio assistido. Pergunta problema: Para tanto, buscamos responder as indagações: qual a opinião e atitude dos acadêmicos de medicina sobre a eutanásia e o suicídio assistido; mensurar a frequência de estudantes a favor ou contra a eutanásia e/ou ao suicídio assistido; verificar a interferência de crenças religiosas na formação da opinião do indivíduo e comparar as posições dos indivíduos em relação a eutanásia e o suicídio assistido entre os diferentes anos de graduação do estudante. Metodologia: Nesse sentido, o estudo teve um caráter analítico e transversal, com abordagem quantitativa por meio da aplicação de um questionário de 22 perguntas. Foram abordados 145 acadêmicos de medicina do primeiro ao 4 ano. Resultados: Verificamos que, 77,9% eram favoráveis à realização da eutanásia e 66,2% ao suicídio assistido. No entanto, observou-se uma inversão significativa de concordância ao decorrer do período em que se encontrava na graduação. Observamos que estudantes dos anos mais avançados apresentaram menor aceitação da eutanásia e do suicídio assistido. Conclusão: Conclui-se assim que os estudantes no começo do curso de medicina tinham uma maior aceitação das práticas de eutanásia e suicídio assistido, porém ao decorrer do curso notou-se uma inversão desse posicionamento. Uma possível justificativa de mudança de opinião é o fato dos estudantes terem mais contato com os pacientes. Além disso, a partir dos dados analisados, não se pôde estabelecer associação com a crença religiosa e as práticas de eutanásia e suicídio assistido.

Body appreciation, a central aspect of positive body image, recently started to capture the attention of the scientific community as a potential determinant of well-being. However, little is known about onset and early identification in both males and females, as studies on this subject in childhood are still scarce, due in part to a dearth of validated instruments. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties and sex invariance of a Portuguese version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 for Children (BAS-2C; Halliwell et al., 2017). We also explored the relationship between the BAS-2C and body mass index z-scores (BMIz). Participants were 328 children, ages 9-to-11 years (50.9% girls). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the one-dimensional factor structure had adequate fit, but sex invariance was not supported. Differential item functioning analysis revealed that boys and girls respond differently to item #9, which assesses body comfort. BAS-2C scores evidenced internal consistency and convergent validity with quality of life, healthy eating habits, and body size dissatisfaction. BMIz showed a low ability to predict body appreciation. This study brings support for the use of the BAS-2C in Portuguese-speaking children, but caution is warranted in comparing BAS-2C scores across sexes.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies revealed an association between vascular comorbidities and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the severity of motor and cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there is a lack of studies assessing the entire spectrum of non‐motor symptoms (NMS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between vascular comorbidities and NMS in PD patients. METHODS: Patients were assessed at baseline and 4 years later with the Non‐Motor Symptom Assessment Scale, Parkinson's Psychosis Questionnaire, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and Apathy scale. After tetrachoric correlation matrix, we conducted linear regression models (adjusted for age, gender, disease duration, and UPDRS‐III) to investigate the relationship between vascular comorbidities and NMS. RESULTS: In 73 PD patients, (mean disease duration 7.1 [5.3]), 57% had hypertension, 44% body mass index >25, 44% elevated cholesterol, 15% diabetes mellitus, 15% OSA, 14% cigarette‐smoking history, 8% prior stroke, and 8% coronary disease. Cognition, psychotic symptoms, apathy, urinary function, and miscellaneous domains significantly worsened at the 4‐year follow‐up. OSA was significantly associated with higher severity of hallucinations/illusions at baseline and with a more severe deterioration of attention/memory, psychotic symptoms, and apathetic mood at the 4‐year follow‐up. At baseline, but not at follow‐up, hypertension was negatively associated with miscellaneous domain scores and coronary disease with autonomic function scores (gastrointestinal tract and urinary function domains). CONCLUSION: Among PD‐associated comorbidities, OSA was the main factor of decline. In addition to cognitive impairment, OSA might also potentially worsen psychotic symptoms and apathy. Treatment of OSA could be a strategy to improve these important NMS.

Latterly, the development of green synthesized polymeric nanoparticles with anticancer studies has been an emerging field in academia, and in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Vegetable oils are potential substitutes for petroleum derivatives, as they present themselves as a clean and environmentally friendly alternative and are available in high quantities at relatively low prices. Biomass-derived chemicals can be converted into monomers with unique structures, generating materials with new properties for the synthesis of sustainable monomers and polymers. In this way, the production of bio-based polymeric nanoparticles appears as a great application of green chemistry for biomedical uses. There is an increasing demand for biocompatible and biodegradable materials for specific applications in biomedical as cancer therapy, encouraging scientists in working on research towards designing polymers, with enhanced properties and clean processes, containing oncology active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The nanoencapsulation of these APIs in bio-based polymeric nanoparticles can control the release of the substances, increase bioavailability, reduce problems with volatility and degradation, reduce side effects, and increase treatment efficiency. Thus, this review aims to discuss the use of green chemistry for bio-based nanoparticle production and its application in anticancer medicine. The use of vegetable oils for the production of renewable monomers and polymers will be discussed, bringing castor oil as an ideal candidate for such application, as well as more suitable methods for the production of bio-based nanoparticles and some oncology APIs available for anticancer application.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurodegenerative disease, but disease-modifying or preventive treatments are lacking. Physical activity is a modifiable factor that decreases the PD risk and improves motor symptoms in PD. Understanding which dimensions of gait performance correlate with physical activity in PD can have important pathophysiological and therapeutic implications. Clinical/demographic data together with physical activity levels were collected from thirty-nine PD patients. Gait analysis was performed wearing seven inertial measurement units on the lower body, reconstructing the subjects' lower body motion using 3D kinematic biomechanical models. Garbage codes, such as external causes with no specific information, indicate poor quality cause of death data. Investigation of garbage codes via an effective instrument is necessary to convert them into useful data for public health. This study analyzed the performance and suitability of the new investigation of deaths from external causes (IDEC) form to improve the quality of external cause of death data in Brazil. The performance of the IDEC form on 133 external garbage codes deaths was compared with a stratified matched sample of 992 (16%) investigated deaths that used the standard garbage codes form. Consistency between these two groups was checked. The percentage of garbage codes from external causes reclassified into valid causes with a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was analyzed. Reclassification for specific causes has been described. Qualitative data on the feasibility of the form were recorded by field investigators. Investigation using the new form reduced all external garbage codes by -92.5% (95%CI: -97.0; -88.0), whereas the existing form decreased garbage codes by -60.5% (95%CI: -63.5; -57.4). The IDEC form presented higher effectivity for external-cause garbage codes of determined intent. Deaths that remained garbage codes mainly lacked information about the circumstances of poisoning and/or vehicle accidents. Despite the fact that field investigators considered the IDEC form feasible, they suggested modifications for further improvement. The new form was more effective than the current standard form in improving the quality of defined external causes. É necessário investigar os códigos garbage com um instrumento efetivo para convertê-los em dados úteis para a saúde pública. Este estudo analisou o desempenho e a adequação do novo formulário de investigação de óbitos por causas externas (IDEC) para melhorar a qualidade dos dados de causa externa de morte no Brasil. O desempenho deste formulário em 133 óbitos com códigos garbage de causas externas foi comparado com uma amostra estratificada e pareada de 992 (16%) óbitos investigados que utilizaram o formulário padrão de códigos garbage existente. A consistência entre esses dois grupos foi verificada. Analisou-se o percentual de códigos garbage de causas externas reclassificados em causas válidas com um intervalo de 95% de confiança (IC95%). A reclassificação para causas específicas foi descrita. Dados qualitativos sobre a viabilidade do formulário foram registrados por pesquisadores de campo. A investigação com o novo formulário reduziu todos os códigos garbage de causas externas em -92,5% (IC95%: -97,0; -88,0) enquanto o formulário existente diminuiu os códigos garbage em -60,5% (IC95%: -63,5; -57,4). Introdução:A partir da portaria MS/GM n° 529/2013, foram estabelecidas medidas de segurança ao paciente. Esse tema tem ganhado espaço entre discussões no ambiente hospitalar e repercutido mundialmente devido ao elevado índice de eventos adversos ocasionados.Objetivo:Salientar a importância da assistência de enfermagem dentro do ambiente hospitalar acerca dos protocolos de segurança do paciente.Metodologia:Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura através das bases de dados LILACS, MedLine, SciELO e BDENF. Foram incluídos artigos completos, sobre os protocolos básicos de segurança em ambiente hospitalar e a importância da enfermagem nesse cenário, publicados em língua portuguesa e inglesa, entre 2017 a 2022.Resultado:Foram analisados 7 artigos, os quais foram observados que as principais dificuldades enfrentadas pela equipe de enfermagem na execução dos protocolos de segurança são ausência de protocolos de segurança no hospital, falta de conhecimento referente ao PNSP, ausência de checklist e excesso de trabalho.Conclusão:O aumento sequencial das taxas de danos causados por negligência ou imperícia quanto a aplicação dos protocolos básicos de segurança dentro do ambiente hospitalar é alarmante. O profissional de enfermagem por estar constantemente em contato com o paciente, torna-se responsável pela verificação da execução corretamente dos protocolos.

A monitoria acadêmica visa garantir a formação integral dos discentes, de maneira a abranger diferentes espectros do aprendizado. Assim, por conta da pandemia causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2 e consequente distanciamento social, a monitoria da disciplina de Embriologia Humana do curso de medicina do Centro Universitário necessitou de diferentes adaptações para suprir as necessidades acadêmicas dos discentes, em formato remoto e presencial. Este trabalho tem como objetivo abordar a maneira como a monitoria acadêmica da disciplina de Embriologia do curso de medicina do Centro Universitário Barão de Mauá em Ribeirão Preto foi conduzida. O presente artigo visa apresentar um relato de experiência decorrida da participação mútua de alunos e professores, o qual discorre sobre a realização da monitoria acadêmica mediante o contexto atípico da epidemia de COVID-19 comparado com o respectivo contexto posterior, além das mudanças que precisaram ser realizadas e perspectivas obtidas por meio de tal experiência. A partir da percepção dos discentes monitores, foi possível ressaltar que as atividades síncronas apresentaram um déficit quando comparadas as presenciais, entretanto não perderam sua importância, além de terem sido cumpridos os objetivos da mesma.Conclui-se que foram necessárias adequações metodológicas e na maneira de abordagem, pois notou-se que a monitoria presencial promove maior envolvimento dos discentes. Diante disso, a união entre os monitores e a docente da disciplina de embriologia foi crucial para o desenvolvimento efetivo da monitoria, além de contribuir para a futura carreira no meio acadêmico, bem como no profissional.

Resumo O estudo analisa o sigilo na relação médico-paciente, abordando a influência de novas tecnologias, como as mídias sociais, no exercício da profissão, e aferindo o conhecimento de profissionais sobre situações em que o sigilo pode ser quebrado sem consequências legais. Trata-se de pesquisa de natureza exploratória, de abordagem quantitativa e corte transversal realizada entre outubro e novembro de 2019, com 116 médicos, por meio de questionário estruturado com 19 questões, entre as quais cinco avaliaram o conhecimento sobre sigilo profissional de acordo com o Código de Ética Médica e o ordenamento jurídico brasileiro. Considerou-se que os médicos que responderam três ou mais questões corretamente apresentaram conhecimento satisfatório sobre o uso de mídias sociais e o sigilo médico (apenas 55,2% dos entrevistados). O resultado revela a importância da educação médica continuada, principalmente quanto ao sigilo médico. Abstract The study analyzes confidentiality in the physician-patient relations, addressing how new technologies, such as social media, influence professional practice, and assessing the professionals’ knowledge regarding situations in which confidentiality can be broken without legal consequences. This cross-sectional, quantitative and exploratory research took place between October and November 2019, involving 116 physicians who answered a structured questionnaire with 19 questions, among which five assessed knowledge on professional secrecy according to the Code of Medical Ethics and the Brazilian legal system. Physicians who answered three or more questions correctly were considered to have satisfactory knowledge on social media use and medical confidentiality (only 55.2% of respondents). Results reveal the importance of continuing medical education, especially regarding medical confidentiality. Resumen El estudio analiza la confidencialidad en la relación médico-paciente, abordando la influencia de las nuevas tecnologías, como las redes sociales, en el ejercicio de la profesión, y midiendo el conocimiento de los profesionales sobre situaciones en las que la confidencialidad puede romperse sin consecuencias legales. Se trata de una investigación exploratoria, con enfoque cuantitativo y transversal, realizada entre octubre y noviembre de 2019, con 116 médicos, mediante un cuestionario estructurado con 19 preguntas, entre las que cinco evaluaron conocimientos sobre la confidencialidad profesional según el Código de Ética Médica. y el sistema legal brasileño. Se consideró que los médicos que respondieron correctamente a tres o más preguntas tenían un conocimiento satisfactorio sobre el uso de las redes sociales y la confidencialidad médica (solo el 55,2% de los encuestados). El resultado revela la importancia de la educación médica continua, especialmente en lo que respecta a la confidencialidad médica.

Background Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) are a major complication in patients with diabetes and affect globally 170 million patients. Approximately 28% of patients with infected DFU require amputation. Diabetic foot infections (DFI) caused by persistent or multidrug resistant organisms are a threat to the outcome of therapy. Infections are mostly polymicrobial, and major pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A promising new approach using phages may potentially be a novel modality to increase treatment success. TP-102 is an innovative bacteriophage cocktail for treatment of DFI, a diabetes related unmet need. Methods TP-102 comprised of 5 different phages, targeting S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. This study is a Phase I/II clinical trial performed in Israel looking at safety and tolerability. TP-102 bacteriophage cocktail was applied topically at a titer of 109 PFU/mL/cm3 of target ulcer. Two cohorts receive multiple doses of TP-102. In non-infected DFU (cohort 1) for 1 week and for 28 days in DFU with infection grade 2 or 3 (PEDIS classification, cohort 2). Treatment groups were TP-102 with standard of care versus placebo and standard of care. Outcomes include microbiologic data on the 3 target bacteria, ulcer healing characteristics, incidence and severity of TP-102-emergent solicited local and systemic adverse events, and their relationship to the treatment, from the first application of TP-102 until the end of study. Results For the evaluation of safety in patients with non-infected ulcers, eight patients were enrolled to the first cohort. Six were treated with TP-102 and 2 with placebo. TP-102-treated patients had no severe adverse events associated with the treatment. In the second cohort a total of 18 patients are currently being treated with TP-102 or placebo for 28 days, three times a week. Recruitment is ongoing and results of the trial will be presented. Conclusion TP-102 appeared to be safe when applied to patients with uninfected diabetic foot ulcers. The treatment is a potential new non-traditional antimicrobial for topical application. The efficacy of TP-102 in the treatment of infected diabetic ulcers is being assessed in an ongoing randomized clinical trial. Resumo Com o aumento do número de mulheres privadas de liberdade em todo o mundo, a importância da implantação de estratégias específicas que devem ser aplicadas ao suporte oferecido a essas mulheres são importantes medidas sociais. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a oferta dos recursos para a reinserção social de egressos do sistema prisional brasileiro, com o recorte de gênero. A proposta é realizar uma análise documental sobre estratégias governamentais e não governamentais direcionadas para este público, com recorte de gênero, por meio de uma matriz analítica pelo período compreendido entre 2020 e 2021. Os resultados mostram que há no país diversos programas voltados à reinserção social de egressos do sistema prisional, entretanto poucos apresentam um recorte de gênero. O tema reinserção social e sistema prisional foi identificado em 84 notícias em sítios dos organismos governamentais visitados, sendo 20 federais e 64 estaduais. Em 11 organismos internacionais atuando no Brasil e em 12 ONGs, somente seis apresentaram recorte de gênero. O desafio do sistema penitenciário brasileiro é incluir a abordagem de cidadania e dignidade humana no sistema prisional, incluindo uma abordagem da questão de gênero. Abstract With the increasing number of women deprived of liberty worldwide, implementing specific strategies that should be applied to the support offered to these women are essential social measures. This study aims to analyze the supply of resources for the social reintegration of former inmates of the Brazilian prison system from a gender perspective. We propose to conduct a documentary analysis on governmental and non-governmental strategies aimed at this audience, with a gender perspective, through an analytical matrix for the 2020-2021 period. The results show several programs in the country aimed at the social reintegration of former prisoners; however, few have a gender perspective. The theme of social reintegration and the prison system was identified in 84 news items on government agencies’ websites, 20 of which were federal and 64 state, in 11 international organizations operating in Brazil, and 12 NGOs. Only six had a gender profile. The challenge for the Brazilian penitentiary system is to introduce the citizenship and human dignity approach in the prison system, including an approach to the gender issue.

Objectives Human aging is a multidirectional, multidimensional, and multicausal process that reflects biological, psychological, and sociocultural influences, which act in distinct combinations throughout the life-span. Proactivity towards avoiding the usual aging process is needed. This study analyses the long-term effects of participation in Community-Based Programs on psychological well-being. Method A sample of 150 community-dwelling participants enrolled in Community-Based Programs, aged 55 to 84 years and living in three Portuguese localities were matched by age (55–64, 65–74, 75–84 years), gender, and locality with a comparison group of non-participants. We administered a multidimensional gerontological protocol which included socio-demographic information, measures of health/disease, functional ability, social network, cognitive performance and psychological well-being. Hierarchical regression models were used to test the effects of Community-Based Programs on psychological well-being adjusting for remaining variables. Results Overall, psychological well-being is positively associated with household income and satisfaction with health. Nevertheless, in participants, psychological well-being builds predominantly upon social network and is not associated with a moderate inability or cognitive deficits, contrasting with psychological well-being in non-participants. After adjusting for background variables, psychological well-being was positively associated with health satisfaction and social network and negatively related to moderate inability. Further, a significant interaction of participation in Community-Based Programs with age, points out higher levels of psychological well-being in participants contrasting with a downward trend in non-participants. After stratification by age, psychological well-being increases with time attending Community-Based Programs in the oldest (75–84 years) contrasting with the remainder. Conclusions Participation in Community-Based Programs may improve the negative effects of the aging process on psychological well-being. This positive effect as age increases may be linked to a reinforcement of social network, valued more by participants in Community-Based Programs. Furthermore, the programs may act as a healing/maintenance strategy in persons with moderate inability and/or cognitive deficits.

Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is multi-symptom disease with variable progression. Objectives We performed a longitudinal study to address the evolution of motor symptoms (MS) and non-motor symptoms (NMS), predictors of motor-, cognitive-, disability-, and health-related quality of life (HRQL) status and the relative usefullness of a battery of separate NMS scales (BSS) versus the Non-Motor Symptom Scale (NMSS). Methods Seventy-two patients were assessed at baseline and 4 years later with the NMSS and BSS. We assessed the following outcomes: cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale [MoCA]), disability (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part II [UPDRS II], Schwab and England [S&E]), motor dysfunction (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III [UPDRS III], Hoehn and Yahr [HY]), and HRQL (EuroQol [EQ] EQ-vertical visual analogue scale [VAS] and EQ-Index). Statistical analysis included a comparison between scales scores at both time points and multivariate regression analysis to calculate the impact of each baseline symptom in outcomes. NMSS and BSS were introduced in separate models. Results NMSS Domain 4: perception/hallucinations, Parkinson's Psychosis Questionnaire, Apathy Scale, NMSS Domain 7: urinary, S&E, UPDRS II, HY, and MoCA scores worsened significantly. Dementia increased to a 4-year prevalence of 39.8%. In the multivariate model using BSS, cognitive state variation was significantly predicted by baseline HY, EQ-Index, and S&E. Using the NMSS, MoCA change was significantly associated with NMSS Domain 4: perceptions/hallucination score, cognitive status with UPDRS III score, HRQL with NMSS Domain 4: perception/hallucinations score, and S&E. Conclusion Our study suggests that NMS progress heterogeneously, BSS approach being more sensitive to change than NMSS. The multivariate analysis has shown that S&E and NMSS Domain 4: perception/hallucinations scores are the stronger predictors of HRQL and cognitive dysfunction variation, favoring NMSS over the BSS approach.

The implementation of wind farms is always sold to the local population as a development possibility. However, in practice, what is observed in a short time after the implementation of a plant is that the benefits are few in relation to the problems generated by the inhabitants. Therefore, this research aimed to diagnose environmental conflicts generated by the wind power plant in the municipality of Caetés (PE), for this purpose, participatory rapid diagnosis was used with a rural community of the municipality, through visits to the site followed by a workshop with the families of farmers in the region. As results, signs already perceived in other similar projects such as environmental damage, such as changes in ecosystem services, were found; social problems caused by the proximity of the plant to homes, generating noise pollution among other discomforts and a fall in agricultural activities. Entretanto, na prática, o que se constata em pouco tempo após a implantação de uma usina é que os benefícios são poucos em relação aos problemas gerados aos habitantes. Diante disso, essa pesquisa objetivou diagnosticar conflitos ambientais gerados pela usina eólica no município de Caetés (PE), para tal utilizou-se o Diagnóstico Rápido Participativo junto a uma comunidade rural do município, através de visitas ao local seguida de uma oficina com as famílias de agricultores da região. Como resultados, encontrou-se sinalizações já percebidas em outros empreendimentos similares como os danos ambientais, como alteração dos serviços ecossistêmicos; problemas sociais provocados pela proximidade da usina as residências, gerando poluição sonora entre outros desconfortos e queda nas atividades agropecuárias. Desde então, há diversas divergências e disputas, entre profissionais de saúde, pesquisadores e entidades regulamentadoras, sobre tratamentos prescritos para essa infecção. Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic began in Brazil in March 2020. Since then, there have been several disagreements and disputes between health professionals, researchers and regulatory bodies about prescribed treatments for this infection. Given this scenario, this note proposes to discuss medical autonomy in the described context, based on official documents of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine, produced between 2020 and 2021, considering the mentioned therapeutic possibilities. As a result, three official documents were obtained that show that the only form of ‘autonomy’ is ‘medical autonomy’, while the ‘patient autonomy’ is not evidenced in terms of the adoption of therapies. We did not observe discussions in the documents about the bioethical principle of non-maleficence and that of autonomy itself. In this way, it can be seen that the appreciation of ‘medical autonomy’, without considering the knowledge/doings of patients, nor the scientific findings, can promote misunderstandings and harm the principles of medical practice. Como resultado, se obtuvieron tres documentos oficiales que muestran que la única forma de ‘autonomía’ es la ‘autonomía médica’, mientras que la ‘autonomía del paciente’ no se evidencia en cuanto a la adopción de terapias. No observamos discusiones en los documentos sobre el principio bioético de no maleficencia y el de la propia autonomía. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is part of state-of-the-art treatment for medically refractory Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor or primary dystonia. However, there are multiple movement disorders that present after a static brain lesion and that are frequently refractory to medical treatment. Using Holmes tremor (HT) as an example, we discuss the effectiveness of currently available treatments and, performing simulations using a Markov Chain approach, propose that DBS with iterative parameter optimization is expected to be more effective than an approach based on sequential trials of pharmacological agents. Since, in DBS studies for HT, the thalamus is a frequently chosen target, using data from previous studies of lesion connectivity mapping in HT, we compared the connectivity of thalamic and non-thalamic targets with a proxy of the HT network, and found a significantly higher connectivity of thalamic DBS targets in HT. The understanding of brain networks provided by analysis of functional connectivity may thus provide an informed framework for proper surgical targeting of individual patients. Based on these findings, we argue that there is an ethical imperative to at least consider surgical options in patients with uncommon movement disorders, while simultaneously providing consistent information regarding the expected effectiveness and risks, even in a scenario of surgical-risk aversion. An approach based on n-of-1 DBS trials may ultimately significantly improve outcomes while informing on optimal therapeutic targets and parameter settings for HT and other disabling and rare movement disorders.

O presente relatório diz respeito à minha experiência como estagiária na editora Ponto de Fuga, entre outubro e dezembro de 2021, no âmbito da realização da componente não letiva do Mestrado em Edição de Texto. Com ele pretendo apresentar a minha contribuição na editora ao longo destes 3 meses. Para melhor contextualizar o processo de escolha da entidade acolhedora, é feito primeiramente uma introdução sobre a editora e os seus fundadores. Segue-se a apresentação do projeto a mim atribuído, sem deixar de apresentar a autora Celeste de Andrade e descrever as tarefas realizadas, nomeadamente o processo de revisão de texto. Por fim, é feito um balanço da experiência, que tem em conta as expetativas com que iniciei o estágio, as dificuldades sentidas, os conhecimentos adquiridos e o resultado do trabalho realizado na Ponto de Fuga. This report concerns my experience as an intern at Ponto de Fuga, between October and December 2021, within the scope of the non-teaching component of the Master in Editing and Publishing. With it, I intend to present my contribution to the publishing house over this period. To better contextualize the process of choosing the host entity, I will proceed first with an introduction of the publisher and its founders. This is followed by the presentation of the project assigned to me, together with an introduction of the author Celeste Andrade and description of the tasks carried out, namely the editing process. Finally, an evaluation is made concerning the expectations at the beginning of the internship, the difficulties felt throughout, acquired knowledge and the result of the work done at Ponto de Fuga.

Summary This article focuses on a dogmatic reflection on the concept and function of evidence in civil proceedings. To this end, it addresses evidence as the object of instruction as well as a number of problems associated with the burden of proof. This analysis also deals with the dialectics between the burden of proof and the burden of claim. The reflection we propose on the concetual basis of the evidence also covers questions relating to the instructional activity, the value of the evidence, the binding force of the means of proof and its limitations. From the theoretical framework described, it is also fundamental to proceed to the methodological classification of the test, also questioning its extra procedural value, always seeking to find foundations in the principles underlying the instructional activity. Introduction: In patients with supraventricular arrhythmias and high ventricular rate, unresponsive to rate and rhythm control therapy or catheter ablation, atrioventricular (AV) node ablation may be performed. Objectives: To assess long-term outcomes after AV node ablation and to analyze predictors of adverse events. Methods: We performed a detailed retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent AV node ablation between February 1997 and February 2019, in a single Portuguese tertiary center. Results: A total of 123 patients, mean age 69±9 years and 52% male, underwent AV node ablation. Most of them presented atrial fibrillation at baseline (65%). During a median follow-up of 8.5 years (interquartile range 3.8-11.8), patients improved heart failure (HF)functional class (NYHA class III-IV 46% versus 13%, p=0.001), and there were reductions in hospitalizations due to HF (0.98±1.3 versus 0.28±0.8, p=0.001) and emergency department (ED) visits (1.1±1 versus 0.17±0.7, p=0.0001). There were no device-related complications. Despite permanent pacemaker stimulation, left ventricular ejection fraction did not worsen (47±13% vs. 47%±12, p=0.63). Twenty-eight patients died (23%). The number of ED visits due to HF before AV node ablation was an independent predictor of the composite adverse outcome (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.24-2.61, p=0.002). Conclusions: Despite pacemaker dependency, the clinical benefit of AV node ablation persisted at long-term follow-up. AV node ablation should probably be considered earlier in the treatment of patients with supraventricular arrhythmias and HF, especially in cases that are unsuitable for selective ablation of the specific arrhythmia. Resumo: Introdução: Nos doentes com disritmias supraventriculares e frequência ventricular elevada, irresponsivos à terapêutica para controlo da frequência e do ritmo, ou à ablação por catéter, a ablação do nódulo auriculoventricular (ANAV) pode ser realizada. Objetivos: Avaliar os resultados em longo prazo após a ANAV e analisar preditores de eventos adversos. Métodos: Análise retrospetiva detalhada, dos doentes submetidos à ANAV entre fevereiro 1997 e fevereiro 2019, num centro terciário português. Resultados: Foram submetidos 123 doentes à ANAV: idade média 69 ± 9 anos e 52% homens. A maioria apresentou fibrilhação auricular (65%). Num período mediano de seguimento de 8,5 anos (intervalo interquartil 3,8-11,8), houve melhoria da classe funcional de insuficiência cardíaca (IC) (classe NYHA III-IV 46% versus 13%, p = 0,001) e redução dos internamentos por IC (0,98±1,3 versus 0,28±0,8, p=0,001), redução dos recursos ao serviço de urgência (SU) (1,1±1 versus 0,17±0,7, p=0,0001). Não houve complicações relacionadas ao dispositivo. Apesar da estimulação permanente de pacemaker, a FEVE não agravou (47%±13 versus 47%±12, p=0,63). Faleceram 28 doentes (23%). O número de recursos ao SU por IC antes do procedimento foi preditor independente do composto de eventos adversos (OR 1,8, IC95%, 24-2,61, p=0,002). Conclusões: Apesar da dependência de pacemaker, o benefício clínico da ANAV persistiu a longo prazo. O número de recursos ao SU por IC antes do procedimento foi preditor do composto de eventos adversos. Provavelmente, a ANAV deveria ser considerada mais cedo no tratamento de doentes com disritmias supraventriculares e IC, sobretudo nos casos em que a ablação seletiva da disritmia seja inapropriada.

This article investigates the socio-cultural and ecological aspects associated with the hunting of wild animals by the inhabitants of the Cruz village, State of Alagoas. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviews and informal conversations. A total of 23 species was indicated as a game, with mammals being preferred by the population. Among the techniques of capture, the hunting of persecution with dog and hunting with a shotgun stands out, in addition to the shuttlecock, used to reach the birds with small stones. Four forms of animal use were recorded: food, medicine, pets, and control. Despite being indicated as one of the main causes of the reduction of wildlife, hunting is strongly related to the socio-cultural aspects of the Brazilian semi-arid populations. Thus, proposals for the management of wildlife resources in traditional communities must take into account the needs of these populations.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi identificar na literatura científica as atuações da equipe multiprofissional na prevenção da violência obstétrica. Para tal, realizou-se uma revisão narrativa da literatura. Os estudos foram selecionados a partir de busca online das seguintes bases de dados: SCIELO, BVS e PubMed. Foram utilizados os seguintes descritores controlados: “Saúde da Mulher”, “Violência Obstétrica”, Parto e “Equipe Multiprofissional”, “Assistência em Saúde”. Foram coletados 516 estudos, contudo se enquadraram como amostra desta pesquisa 07 artigos. A literatura corrobora que a forma mais eficaz de combater a violência obstétrica é por meio da qualificação profissional, com capacitações constantes sobre temas que englobam os direitos humanos e a humanização da assistência em saúde. Constatou-se que a violência obstétrica é mais evidente em mulheres vulneráveis. Este tipo de violência ainda é muito presente nas unidades de saúde e corriqueiramente pela falta de debate e visibilidade da temática em questão, boa parte das mulheres sofrem essa violência sem compreenderem que estão sendo vítimas num momento tão delicado de suas vidas. O enfrentamento da violência obstétrica deve acontecer a partir da educação continuada da equipe pensando na desconstrução desta cultura impregnada na sociedade.

Introduction and Objectives: Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) extent has emerged as a predictor of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), however little is known about the arrhythmogenic relevance of its specific location in the left ventricle. Our aim was to analyze the influence of LGE location on the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and SCD in patients with HCM. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical and Holter records of HCM patients who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance at our center. LGE extent and distribution were assessed using the American Heart Association 17-segment model. VA was defined as non-sustained or sustained ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation or SCD. Results: Sixty-one patients (age 57.0±16.7 years) were included and VA occurred in 24.6% (n=15). Patients with VA showed greater LGE extent than those without (7.40±5.3 vs. 3.52±3.0 segments, p=0.007). Analyzing the distribution of LGE, a set of arrhythmogenic segments (apex/basal inferior/basal anterolateral/mid inferoseptal) was found. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a nonprogressive, early-onset neurodevelopmental disorder affecting ∼2 to 3/1,000 children worldwide. It is characterized by movement/postural disabilities accompanied by sensitive, perceptual, cognitive, communicational, behavioral, and musculoskeletal perturbations. Many CP patients are thought to have genetic etiologies overlapping those of other neurodevelopmental conditions. Herein, we reported a newly discovered case (the 36th case to date) of a female patient (misdiagnosed with CP until age 19) with the rare X-linked intellectual disability syndrome resulting from an int22h1/int22h2-mediated Xq28 duplication. A microarray analysis revealed a ∼0.4 Mb duplication within the 154.1 to 154.6 Mb subregion of Xq28 (hg19, CRCh37), confirming a diagnosis of the rare int22h1/int22h2-mediated Xq28 duplication intellectual disability syndrome. Atypical T2 hyperintensities were also observed. This case report builds upon the limited cohort of X-linked intellectual disability syndrome patients and reiterates the growing observations pertaining to the phenotypic overlap between genetic CP cases and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

A Leishmaniose é uma antropozoonose de elevada importância na saúde pública, geograficamente distribuída em vários pontos do Brasil e do mundo, causada pelo protozoário de gênero Leishmania e transmitida pela picada de mosquitos flebotomíneos de gênero Lutzomyia. Caracterizada por um acometimento diversificado entre as espécies animais, assim como diferentes manifestações clínicas, com o tempo fizeram-se necessários estudos aprofundados acerca da presença de anticorpos anti-leishmania em espécies animais que até então não são de interesse para o ciclo de transmissão do protozoário, como os equídeos. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar e descrever a presença de anticorpos anti-Leishmania em 300 animais utilizados para tração na área urbana do Distrito Federal. Foram utilizados exames sorológicos do tipo teste rápido Dual-Path Platform (TR-DPP). O teste emprega a proteína recombinante rK28, resultado da fusão dos antígenos rK9, rK39 e rK26. O teste detecta de forma qualitativa os anticorpos anti Leishmania infantum em amostras de soro, plasma e sangue. Observou-se soropositividade em 61,7% (185/300) dos equídeos testados, na qual 96,2% (178/185) eram da espécie equina e 3,8% (07/185) da espécie muar; quanto a distribuição por região administrativa do Distrito Federal, as duas cidades com maiores registros de animais positivos foram Ceilândia com 25,4% (47/185) de equídeos reagentes e Santa Maria com 14,6% (27/185). Confirma-se então que há a circulação de Leishmania entre os equídeos de tração do DF, validando-se assim a necessidade de amplificação de estudos e pesquisas quanto ao papel dos equídeos na cadeia epidemiológica da leishmaniose, uma vez que essa corresponde a uma zoonose em expansão.

Thus, the industry employs strategies such as drug repositioning and drug repurposing, which allows the application of already approved drugs to treat a di erent disease, as occurred in the first months of 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prediction of drug–target interactions is an essential part of the DD process because it can accelerate it and reduce the required costs. DTI prediction performed in silico have used approaches based on molecular docking simulations, including similarity-based and network- and graph-based ones. This paper presents MPS2IT-DTI, a DTI prediction model obtained from research conducted in the following steps: the definition of a new method for encoding molecule and protein sequences onto images; the definition of a deep-learning approach based on a convolutional neural network in order to create a new method for DTI prediction. Training results conducted with the Davis and KIBA datasets show that MPS2IT-DTI is viable compared to other state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches in terms of performance and complexity of the neural network model. With the Davis dataset, we obtained 0.876 for the concordance index and 0.276 for the MSE; with the KIBA dataset, we obtained 0.836 and 0.226 for the concordance index and the MSE, respectively. AIMS The diagnostic performance of the new Peguero-Lo Presti ECG criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has not been validated by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of Peguero-Lo Presti, Cornell and Sokolow--Lyon voltage criteria for LVH as defined by CMR in an all-comers European population. METHODS A total of 240 consecutive patients referred for CMR who had a concomitant electrocardiogram for review were evaluated. LVH group patients were defined according to the reference values for sex and age of left ventricular mass index (LVMi). A control group, adjusted by sex, was randomly selected from a population without LVH. We applied the ECG voltage criteria to both groups and evaluated their diagnostic accuracy. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were compared. RESULTS Two hundred and forty patients (mean age 63 years; 65% men) were divided into two groups (LVH n = 149; control n = 91). The main causes of LVH were hypertension (24.8%) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (21.5%). The remaining patients of this group had a diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy (14.8%), valvular heart disease (7.4%) and infiltrative cardiomyopathy (2.0%). Congenital myasthenic syndromes are disorders of the neuromuscular junction resulting from genetic defects in its components. Clinical presentations are diverse and virtually always of early onset. We herein report a 67-year-old female patient first presenting with episodes of sudden respiratory failure. A diagnosis of seronegative myasthenia gravis was put forward based on the presence of a limb-girdle pattern of muscle weakness with pathological decremental responses on repetitive nerve stimulation. Lack of response to steroids, intravenous human immunoglobulin and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors lead us to test for classical congenital myasthenic syndrome genes. A c.1378dup heterozygotic mutation in DOK7 was found, classically (albeit not exclusively) described as pathogenic only when inherited in a homozygotic fashion. Patients with such a single, heterozygous mutation have been previously described, but these have been left unexplained. Thus, under certain still poorly understood circumstances, an heterozygotic state may allow for disease manifestation. These patients may benefit from tailored therapies akin to those normally reserved to homozygotic/compound heterozygotic patients. Awareness for and recognition of such conditions are expected to allow for better provided care and improved quality of life.

The campo rupestre is a Neotropical azonal vegetation. Its disjoint distribution and the fact that it is an old climatic buffered infertile landscape (OCBIL) have been associated with the high diversity and endemism observed in this environment. Here, we tested whether a micro-endemic species from campo rupestre shows: (1) limited zygotic gene flow; (2) lower gametic than zygotic gene flow structure; (3) substrate-driven genetic structure and (4) no evidence of Pleistocene local extinction or recolonization. By sequencing intergenic plastid regions, phenotyping inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and modelling present and past species suitability distributions for Vellozia auriculata we conclude that (1) zygotic gene flow is limited; (2) gametic gene flow is recurrent, but limited by elevation and distance; (3) there is no support for genetic structure driven by substrate and (4) Pleistocene climatic changes did not restrict the species to refugia, with local persistence. As long-term gene flow restrictions may lead to differentiation and speciation, our data helps to corroborate that the campo rupestre is both a cradle (due to low zygotic gene flow, prolonged isolation and consequent differentiation) and a lineage museum (due to local survival during climate oscillations). We highlight two distinct evolutionarily significant units (ESU), providing information for better conservation practice.

Objective To identify differences in quality of life (QoL) of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) between diagnosis (Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis), gender (male and female), treatment condition (with and without surgery), and attachment styles (secure, preoccupied, and disconnected); to examine associations between QoL, sociodemographic, clinical, and positive psychological variables; to determine whether sociodemographic, clinical, and positive psychological variables predict QoL. Method The sample included 70 participants diagnosed with IBD (Mage = 43.37 years, SD = 12.81), of whom 71.4% were females and 67.1% had Crohn’s Disease. Positive psychological variables (meaning in life, positive body image, and attachment styles), sociodemographic (age, education, gender) and clinical variables (diagnosis, disease duration, surgery) were assessed as independent variables. QoL was the dependent variable, analyzed through four domains (physical, psychological, social, environment). Results Participants with a secure attachment style reported higher QoL (physical, psychological, and social) than participants with a preoccupied attachment style. Strong positive correlations were found between positive psychological variables and QoL. Body appreciation was a significant predictor of three QoL domains (physical, psychological, and environment). Meaning in life made a unique contribution to the social QoL regression model, and it was also a significant predictor of psychological QoL. Body acceptance by others was a significant predictor of physical QoL, whereas disease duration and education predicted environment QoL. Attachment styles did not predict any QoL domain. Conclusion The most significant predictors of QoL in patients with IBD were body appreciation and meaning in life. Body acceptance by others and body appreciation were the main predictors of physical QoL. Psychological interventions for patients who suffer from IBD should address body appreciation and meaning in life.

Este estudo pretende explorar o papel da imagem corporal positiva (ICP) na qualidade de vida (QdV) de pessoas com insuficiência renal crónica (IRC). A recolha de dados foi efetuada através de instrumentos de autorrelato que permitiram a contemplação das variáveis sociodemográficas, de algumas dimensões da ICP e da QdV, num grupo clínico (n = 46; M = 59,8 anos) e num grupo não clínico (n = 49; M = 55,1 anos) de participantes. Percebeu-se que as várias dimensões da ICP se associam com os diferentes domínios da QdV em ambos os grupos. As mulheres revelaram níveis superiores nas dimensões da aceitação do corpo pelos outros e no autocuidado, comparativamente aos homens. Por último, destaca-se o papel da apreciação da funcionalidade corporal como um importante preditor da QdV. Salienta-se a relevância de se intervir na ICP pelo impacto positivo que pode ter na QdV desta população.

With the increasing number of women deprived of liberty worldwide, implementing specific strategies that should be applied to the support offered to these women are essential social measures. This study aims to analyze the supply of resources for the social reintegration of former inmates of the Brazilian prison system from a gender perspective. We propose to conduct a documentary analysis on governmental and non-governmental strategies aimed at this audience, with a gender perspective, through an analytical matrix for the 2020-2021 period. The results show several programs in the country aimed at the social reintegration of former prisoners; however, few have a gender perspective. The theme of social reintegration and the prison system was identified in 84 news items on government agencies' websites, 20 of which were federal and 64 state, in 11 international organizations operating in Brazil, and 12 NGOs. Only six had a gender profile. The challenge for the Brazilian penitentiary system is to introduce the citizenship and human dignity approach in the prison system, including an approach to the gender issue.Com o aumento do número de mulheres privadas de liberdade em todo o mundo, a importância da implantação de estratégias específicas que devem ser aplicadas ao suporte oferecido a essas mulheres são importantes medidas sociais. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a oferta dos recursos para a reinserção social de egressos do sistema prisional brasileiro, com o recorte de gênero. A proposta é realizar uma análise documental sobre estratégias governamentais e não governamentais direcionadas para este público, com recorte de gênero, por meio de uma matriz analítica pelo período compreendido entre 2020 e 2021. Os resultados mostram que há no país diversos programas voltados à reinserção social de egressos do sistema prisional, entretanto poucos apresentam um recorte de gênero. O tema reinserção social e sistema prisional foi identificado em 84 notícias em sítios dos organismos governamentais visitados, sendo 20 federais e 64 estaduais. Em 11 organismos internacionais atuando no Brasil e em 12 ONGs, somente seis apresentaram recorte de gênero. O desafio do sistema penitenciário brasileiro é incluir a abordagem de cidadania e dignidade humana no sistema prisional, incluindo uma abordagem da questão de gênero.

OBJETIVE: To estimate the prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence perpetrated against women by their intimate partner (IP) in Quilombola communities located in Espírito Santo State, Brazil. METHODS: The data is from a population-based cross-sectional study of Quilombola women conducted from 2017 to 2018. In-person interviews collected information on women’s sociodemographic characteristics, behaviors, and their experience of violence perpetrated by their IP. The analysis used chi-square test and hierarchical logistic regression. RESULTS: 219 women (94.8% of the invited ones) agreed to participate in the study. 59.0% (95%CI: 5.25–65.5) reported psychological violence; 41% (95%CI: 34.5–47.5) physical violence; and 8.2% (95%CI: 4.6–11.8) sexual violence. Psychological violence was associated with having three or more sexual partners in life, when compared to those who had up to two partners (p = 0,009), and previous violence involving other people outside of family increased the chance of suffering psychological violence by an IP more than nine times (p ≤ 0.001). Regarding physical violence, the association with use of barrier contraception (p = 0.031) and having a partner with other sexual partners (p = 0.024) were protective factors for IP violence. Having 3 or more sexual partners in the last 12 months (p = 0.006), partner using illicit drugs (p = 0,006), and alcoholism in the family (p = 0,001), increased the chance of suffer physical violence by the partner. Sexual violence perpetrated by the IP was associated with miscarriage (p = 0.016), partner using drugs (p = 0.020), and gynecological symptoms (p = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: These results showed the high frequency of intimate partner violence in Quilombola women and highlight the importance of reducing social and race inequities for interrupting the culture of violence against women.

Wind energy is a renewable source, cheap and requires little maintenance, so its implementation is being expanded, including in Brazil. Currently, there is a large investment in the deployment of wind power in Pernambuco, in 2016 two wind complexes were installed in the state. However, there is controversy regarding an environmentally friendly energy that can impact fauna and flora, noise, glove reduction, temperature change and local climate change over the years. Thus, the need for interviewing residents of wind farm areas, comparing reports with capture data on the APAC website, comparing NDVI images after wind turbines installation was visualized. Based on the capture results, NDVI images and resident reports, it can be observed that there was a reduction in rainfall rates, however, this period corresponds to a prolonged drought in the northeastern semiarid, thus, a towers installation and analysis. may have aggravated a situation in the region. RESUMO: A energia eólica é de procedência renovável, barata e necessita de pouca manutenção, por isso tem sua implantação sendo ampliada, inclusive no Brasil. Atualmente, há grande investimento por parte do setor privado para implantação de energia eólica para Pernambuco, localizado no nordeste brasileiro, onde em 2016 foram instalados dois complexos eólicos no estado. Porém, há controvérsias quanto a ser uma energia ambientalmente correta, podendo causar impactos na fauna e flora, ruídos, redução de chuvas, mudança na sensação térmica e alteração do clima local, ao longo dos anos. Assim, foi visto a necessidade de entrevistar moradores de áreas de parques eólicos, comparar relatos com dados de precipitação obtidos no site da APAC, comparar imagens NDVI após instalação de aerogeradores. Com base nos resultados de precipitação pluviométrica, das imagens NDVI e dos relatos de moradores, pode-se afirmar que houve redução dos índices de chuva, no entanto, esse período corresponde a uma estiagem prolongada no semiárido nordestino. Logo, deduz-se que a instalação das torres eólicas pode ter agravado a situação da região. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Energia Eólica, Precipitação, Alteração do Clima, NDVI.

Como em qualquer outro setor, o da construção civil tem a necessidade de aprimorar seus processos e de criar diferencias perante seus concorrentes, com a finalidade de aumentar os lucros e minimizar os prejuízos. Em função disso, a alta gerencia busca soluções para que a sua empresa se destaque no mercado. Os modelos tradicionais de avaliação de investimentos, como a metodologia do fluxo de caixa descontado (FCD), não consideram as incertezas e as flexibilidade inseridas no mercado. Visando isso, esse trabalho, será analisado, pela ótica das Opções Reais, uma maneira de minimizar os riscos de um projeto residencial através da determinação do momento ótimo de expandi-lo. Para tanto, serão utilizados os dados de um empreendimento residencial localizado na zona oeste da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, em que será submetido a um modelo baseado nas diretrizes das Opções Reais. Os resultados obtidos nos três cenários analisados no modelo numérico indicam que quando a velocidade de vendas é constante, o mais indicado é adiar ao máximo o momento de expansão do projeto uma vez que isso adia os custos do investimento e aumenta as receitas. As in any other sector, the construction industry needs to improve its processes and create differentiations in the face of its competitors, in order to increase profits and minimize losses. Because of this, top management seeks solutions to make their company stand out in the market. Traditional capital budgeting evaluation models, such as the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method, do not consider the value of the uncertainties and the flexibility that may exist in the project. With this in mind, this paper analyzes, through the Real Options approach, a way to minimize the risks of a residential project by determining the optimal time to expand it. To this end, we will use data from a residential development located in the western zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, which will be submitted to a model based on Real Options guidelines. The results obtained in the three scenarios analyzed in the numerical model indicate that when the sales velocity is constant, it is best to defer the expansion as long as possible since this postpones the investment costs and increases the revenues.
