Abstract

We discuss the nonlinear dynamics and routes to chaos of baroclinic waves as found in a laboratory experiment, the baroclinic annulus, and in Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). Thermal convection in a rapidly rotating fluid subject to differential heating occurs in many systems, ranging from the atmosphere to roating machinery. Our focus is the transition sequence from a steady wave to chaotic mixed-mode vacillations via amplitude vacillation. The main techniques used are phase space reconstruction and a phase coherence measure of the different waves to estimate the strength of the nonlinear wave-wave interactions. While experimental evidence tends to show the onset of amplitude vacillation and further bifurcations towards a mode transition to next-lower mode, recent numerical solutions have shown vacillation and modulated vacillation before a mode transition to the next-higher mode. These apparently inconsistent results will be discussed in detail.

Abstract

International audience; High-resolution direct numerical simulations have shown the occurrence of inertia gravity waves simultaneously with baroclinic instabilities within a differentially heated rotating annulus, the "baroclinic cavity". The working fluid is characterised by a Prandtl number Pr = 16. A decomposition technique applied to the dependent variables has allowed us to separate in space and in time the contributions of the large-scale baroclinic structures from that of the small-scale fluctuations. These latter have been identified as inertia gravity waves from their dispersion relation. The present work is particularly focused on the mechanism responsible for the spontaneous generation of these waves.

Abstract

For many years, the M2P2 laboratory develops highly accurate numerical tools devoted to the study of three-dimensional rapidly rotating flows. These enclosed or opened rotating flows simulate conditions found in a large variety of rotating machinery, including centrifugal pumps, air cycle machines, axial thrust bearings or gas turbines. The present work proposes a benchmark of two Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approaches developed recently in the lab: a fourth order compact finite difference code associated with the dynamic subgrid model and a pseudo-spectral one using a spectral vanishing viscosity technique. We focus on the rotor-stator problem, which is a simplified model of the flow inside rocket engines. The two LES codes have been favourably compared to velocity measurements performed at IRPHE using a two-component LDA system in the case of turbulent rotor-stator flows at Reynolds number equal to 0.4 million. A detailed and accurate picture of the flow for understanding the physics as well as for the assessment of turbulence models for rotating disk systems is provided.

Les écoulements de disque(s) tournant(s) trouvent des applications dans des domaines très variés comme l'astrophysique, la géophysique et surtout les turbomachines. Une majeure partie de cette étude concerne d'ailleurs les écoulements turbulents de type rotor-stator soumis à un flux axial, écoulements que l'on retrouve dans la turbopompe à hydrogène liquide du moteur Vulcain d'Ariane V. D'un point de vue fondamental, ils offrent une géométrie simple ou la rotation influence la structure de la turbulence. Cet article présente une revue sur les écoulements confinés entre un disque tournant et un disque fixe avec ou sans flux imposé pour une gamme de rapport d'aspect couvrant les écoulements de type Batchelor à couches limites séparées et les écoulements de type Couette de torsion à couches limites jointes. Ces écoulements ont été abordés sous différents aspects: stabilité, transition vers la turbulence et écoulements pleinement turbulents, que ce soit expérimentalement ou par simulation numérique. Des résultats concernant des écoulements turbulents avec transferts de chaleur, plus proches des écoulements industriels, sont également présentés.

Following two previous preliminary studies by Maubert and Randriamampianina, the fluid used is air rather than a liquid as used in all other previous work. This study investigated a bifurcation sequence from the axisymmetric flow to a number of complex flows. The transition sequence, on increase of the rotation rate, from the axisymmetric solution via a steady, fully-developed baroclinic wave to chaotic flow followed a variant of the classical quasi-periodic bifurcation route, starting with a subcritical Hopf and associated saddle-node bifurcation. This was followed by a sequence of two supercritical Hopf-type bifurcations, first to an amplitude vacillation, then to a three-frequency quasi-periodic modulated amplitude vacillation (MAV), and finally to a chaotic MAV\@. In the context of the baroclinic annulus this sequence is unusual as the vacillation is usually found on decrease of the rotation rate from the steady wave flow. Further transitions of a steady wave with a higher wave number pointed to the possibility that a barotropic instability of the side wall boundary layers and the subsequent breakdown of these barotropic vortices may play a role in the transition to structural vacillation and, ultimately, geostrophic turbulence., Comment: 31 pages

Recent comparisons with velocity measurements have shown that, for the rotational Reynolds number $Re=\Omega b^2/\nu=95000$ ($\Omega$ the rate of rotation of the rotating disk and $\nu$ the kinematic viscosity of water) under consideration, the stator boundary layer is 3D turbulent and the rotor one is still laminar. Budgets for the turbulence kinetic energy are here presented and highlight some characteristic features of the effect of rotation on turbulence. Abstract

A three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulation is combined with a laboratory study to describe the turbulent flow in an enclosed annular rotor-stator cavity characterized by a large aspect ratio G=(b-a)/h=18.32 and a small radius ratio a/b=0.152, where a and b are the inner and outer radii of the rotating disk and h is the interdisk spacing. The rotation rate Omega under consideration is equivalent to the rotational Reynolds number Re=Omegab2/nu=9.5 x 104, where nu is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. This corresponds to a value at which an experiment carried out at the laboratory has shown that the stator boundary layer is turbulent, whereas the rotor boundary layer is still laminar. Comparisons of the 3D computed solution with velocity measurements have given good agreement for the mean and turbulent fields. The results enhance evidence of weak turbulence at this Reynolds number, by comparing the turbulence properties with available data in the literature. An approximately self-similar boundary layer behavior is observed along the stator side. The reduction of the structural parameter a1 under the typical value 0.15 and the variation in the wall-normal direction of the different characteristic angles show that this boundary layer is three-dimensional. A quadrant analysis of conditionally averaged velocities is performed to identify the contributions of different events (ejections and sweeps) on the Reynolds shear stress producing vortical structures. The asymmetries observed in the conditionally averaged quadrant analysis are dominated by Reynolds stress-producing events in this B��dewadt layer. Moreover, case 1 vortices (with a positive wall induced velocity) are found to be the major source of generation of special strong events, in agreement with the conclusions of Lygren and Andersson., 16 pages

Abstract

Internationale.; International audience; The onset of small-scale fluctuations around a steady convection pattern in a rotating baroclinic annulus filled with air is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulation. In previous laboratory experiments of baroclinic waves, such fluctuations have been associated with a flow regime termed Structural Vacillation which is regarded as the first step in the transition to fully-developed geostrophic turbulence. In the present work, we find the emergence of a new steady wave solution with complex radial structure, associated with a change in the balance of forces to a centrifugally-dominated regime, followed (at high rotation rate) by a further transition to a form of structural vacillation associated with regular m = 3 eddies driven by centrifugal buoyancy.
