Background: Early pregnancy failure is a major public health problem throughout the world. It has been estimated that over 10-20% of pregnancies end up in spontaneous abortion and 80% of all these occur before 12 weeks. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are drugs, which are easy to store and require no surgical skills to administer, providing an alternative to surgical intervention that could increase access to abortion care. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and acceptability of oral mifepristone and misoprostol for the termination of first- trimester pregnancy. The study was carried out in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, conducted from June 2021 to May 2022. Methods: A total of 80 women participants of reproductive age group with miscarriage at gestational age up to 28 weeks attended the outdoor of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. A complete history was taken from each patients and accompanying attendants. A thorough clinical examination was done. Relevant investigation reports were collected. Patients were given a tablet of Misoprostol on day 1. Mifepristone & Misoprostol, in the divided dose and repeated after 2 weeks & after 2 weeks only misoprostol is given for 3 days as per needed. They were followed up for 1-3 days before discharge. Participants were asked to return to the hospital two weeks later to conform to clinical status. If incomplete termination was determined by clinical exam or by ultrasound in either of the study arm, women were given the option for surgical evacuation or 500 mcg of Misoprostol for additional follow-up 1 week later to see if expulsion would have occurred spontaneously. If, after the second follow-up visit, abortion was not complete, a surgical completion was performed. Results: Patients belonged to the age group 18-25 years. Purpose: To evaluate the presentation and outcome of periocular capillary hemangioma treated with low-dose oral propranolol. Method: Thirty cases of periocular capillary hemangioma prospectively studied from 1st June 2015 to 31st May 2017 who received oral propranolol on an outpatient basis. Hemangioma causing any threat to vision or disfigurement was included and age below 3 months and multiple lesions were excluded. Starting dose of propranolol was 1 mg/kg and increased to 2 mg/kg after 2 weeks as a maintenance dose. The tapering dose was 1 mg/kg of body weight before discontinuing the medication. Treatment was continued till the child is 1 year of age or no further change in color or size of the lesion in two successive follow-ups. Results: Presenting age was 6.36 ± 3.36 months (ranged 3–24 months) with female predominance (70%). In 86.6% of cases, the vision was Central Steady and Maintained and cycloplegic refraction showed marked astigmatism in 3 children which resolved after treatment. Forty-six percent of children showed color change as an initial response to treatment. Most children (33.3%) responded completely within 5 months after starting the treatment. One third patients (33.3%) showed 100% resolution, 50% showed 90% to 70% resolution. Pretreatment and post-treatment lesion size was1.60 ± 0.86 cm2 and 0.30 ± 0.40 cm2 respectively (p - value < 0.0005). None showed any significant adverse effect of oral propranolol. Conclusion: Low-dose oral propranolol is an effective and cost-effective treatment modality for periocular capillary hemangioma and is safe as an outpatient basis.

The recent simulation-based inference (SBI) movement in algebra-based introductory statistics courses (Stat 101) has provided preliminary evidence of improved student conceptual understanding and retention. However, little is known about whether these positive effects are preferentially distributed across types of students entering the course. We consider how two metrics of Stat 101 student preparation (pre-course performance on concept inventory and math ACT score) may or may not be associated with end of course student performance on conceptual inventories. Students across all preparation levels tended to show improvement in Stat 101, but more improvement was observed across all student preparation levels in early versions of a SBI course. Furthermore, students' gains tended to be similar regardless of whether students entered the course with more preparation or less. Recent data on a sample of students using a current version of an SBI course showed similar results, though direct comparison with non-SBI students was not possible. Overall, our analysis provides additional evidence that SBI curricula are effective at improving students' conceptual understanding of statistical ideas post-course regardless student preparation. A good understanding of underlying causes of the obesity prevalence in the farmworker population is critical in finding effective strategies to fight obesity and related chronic diseases. There is growing evidence that the population of farmworkers fares poorly with regard to health status, but available data on obesity levels and related chronic diseases is scarce or missing. This study examined the prevalence of overweight and obesity among a sample of farmworker population in California. Results from this study should prove helpful to the design of intervention efforts and policies to help improve the health status of farmworker population at the community level and beyond.

Bonding, Reactivity and Aromaticity in Some Novel All-Metal Metallocenes

The structural characterization of sol-gel based nano crystalline ZnO material is being reported as we observe several previously unreported structural aspects following a sequence of annealing stages. As-grown samples were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Chemical purity of the nano-grains and their crystallinity has been monitored by energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while the unusual changes in nano-crystal growth structure have been studied by X-ray diffraction method. In addition, such samples have been studied by using perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique with the short-lived radioactive probe 111mCd. Changes in the local electronic environment following sintering of the nano-crystalline grains have been observed by this method.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Percutaneous vertebroplasty procedures require relatively long durations of fluoroscopic guidance, which might lead to substantial radiation dose to operators. Specialized injection devices have been proposed to limit operator exposure. Our purpose was to compare the radiation dose to the operator’s hands during vertebroplasty when using 1-cc syringes versus that when using an injection device. METHODS: Radiation dosimeters were worn on the left wrist during 39 vertebroplasty injection procedures in 25 patients. Cases were alternated between the use of 1-cc syringes (19 procedures) and the use of an injection device (20 procedures). For each procedure, one dosimeter was worn throughout the procedure, both during needle placement and injection, and a second dosimeter was worn during the injection phase only. Mean doses for the whole case and mean doses for the injection procedure alone were compared between groups. RESULTS: Mean whole case dose was 128 ± 161 mrem (range, 0–660 mrem) for the 1-cc syringe group versus 98 ± 90 mrem (range, 0–340 mrem) for the injection device group (P = .23). Mean dose during injection was 100 ± 145 mrem (range, 0–660 mrem) for the 1-cc syringe group versus 55 ± 43 mrem (range, 0–130 mrem) for the injection device group (P = .09). Three of 19 1-cc syringe cases yielded zero dose, compared with four of 20 injection device cases. Duration of injection was markedly different between groups, with mean injection times of 4.2 and 7.5 min for 1-cc syringe and injection device cases, respectively (P < .00002). Mean injection dose per minute of lateral fluoroscopy was 23.6 and 7.3 mrem for the 1-cc syringe and injection device groups, respectively (P = .002). CONCLUSION: The use of an injection device significantly decreased the radiation dose to the operator’s extremity per unit time of injection. However, total dose per injection was equivalent between groups because of significantly longer injection duration for the injection device cohort.
