Objective Estimate Healthy Homes/Healthy Families (HHHF) intervention efficacy for improving dietary quality. Methods Low-income overweight and obese women (n = 349) recruited from rural community health centers were randomized to receive HHHF, a 16-week home environment–focused coaching intervention or health education materials by mail. Healthy Eating Index–2010 scores were calculated from 2 24-hour dietary recalls collected at baseline and 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results HHHF participants reported greater improvements in Healthy Eating Index–2010 total scores at 6-month follow-up (+3.41 ± 13.43 intervention vs +2.02 ± 12.26 control; P =.009). Subcomponent analysis indicated greater consumption of total vegetables (P = .02) and greens and beans (P = .001), whole grains (P = .02) and reduced consumption of empty calories (P = .03). Standardized intervention effect sizes were 0.16 at 6 months and 0.13 at 12 months of follow-up. Conclusions and Implications The HHHF resulted in short-term improvements in dietary quality, although more research is needed to interpret the clinical significance of effect sizes of this magnitude.

A remarkable set of albedo changes has been uncovered by Mariner 9 photography of the upper slopes of the shield volcano Pavonis Mons, near its summit caldera. The most likely explanation of the event is aeolian transport of fine-grained particles. Since the atmospheric pressure in this locality is about 1.5 mb, minimum wind velocities above the surface boundary layer of about 110 m per sec are necessary, corresponding to 0.51 of the speed of sound. Slope winds in this velocity range are expected near the upper flanks of major Martian volcanic constructs.

During its active lifetime Mariner 9 obtained 32 high-resolution pictures of Phobos, and 9 of Deimos. The spacecraft orbit was adequate for about 80% complete coverage of Phobos. However, the coverage of the outer satellite was restricted to the Mars-facing side. The approaches used in processing the pictures are discussed. For each satellite picture a coordinate grid of the satellite was obtained with the aid of a computer.

Viking 2 lander began imaging the surface of Mars at Utopia Planitia on 3 September 1976. The surface is a boulder-strewn reddish desert cut by troughs that probably form a polygonal network. A plateau can be seen to the east of the spacecraft, which for the most probable lander location is approximately the direction of a tongue of ejecta from the crater Mie. Boulders at the lander 2 site are generally more vesicular than those near lander i. Fines at both lander sites appear to be very fine-grained and to be bound in a duricrust. The pinkish color of the sky, similar to that observed at the lander I site, indicates suspension of surface material. However, the atmospheric optical depth is less than that at the lander I site. After dissipation of a cloud of dust stirred during landing, no changes other than those stemming from sampling activities have been detected in the landscape. No signs of large organisms are apparent at either landing site.

Mariner 9 (M9) and Mariner 6 and 7 photography of common regions of Mars are compared, with appropriate attention to the photometric properties of the camera systems. The comparison provides a 2.5 yr time baseline for study of variable albedo features. We find the development of bright streaks and patches, a phenomenon unobserved through the entire M9 mission; the evolution of dark crater splotches into dark streaks; and a planetwide increase in splotchiness. Yet, a large number of splotches and albedo boundaries remain fixed over the same period. Many of the observations are interpreted in terms of a global fallout and subsequent local redistribution of bright fine particulates raised by global dust storms.

Over 1000 camera events were returned from the two Viking landers during the Primary Mission. A system was devised for processing camera data as they were received, in real time, from the Deep Space Network. This system provided a flexible choice of parameters for three computer-enhanced versions of the data for display or hard-copy generation. Software systems allowed all but 0.3% of the imagery scan lines received on earth to be placed correctly in the camera data record. A second-order processing system was developed which allowed extensive interactive image processing including computer-assisted photogrammetry, a variety of geometric and photometric transformations, mosaicking, and color balancing using six different filtered images of a common scene. These results have been completely cataloged and documented to produce an Experiment Data Record.

Systematic Mariner 9 photography of a range of Martian surface features, observed with all three photometric angles approximately invariant, reveals three general categories of albedo variations: (1) an essentially uniform contrast enhancement due to the dissipation of the dust storm; (2) the appearance of splotches, irregular dark markings at least partially related to topography; and (3) the development of both bright and dark linear streaks, generally emanating from craters. Some splotches and streaks vary on characteristic timescales of about two weeks; they have characteristic dimensions of kilometers to tens of kilometers. The morphology and variability of streaks and splotches, and the resolution of at least one splotch into an extensive dune system, implicate windblown dust as the principal agent of Martian albedo differences and variability.

Computer controlled mass spectrometer system, processing spectral information data for on-line graphic system output

The auscultatory signs in 90 subjects with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy are described. The late-onset ejection systolic murmur and its responses to vaso-active manoeuvres reflect a volume-dependent outflow tract obstruction. Late vibrations of the systolic murmur, not uncommonly recorded at the apex, are due to associated mitral incompetence. Non-ejection systolic clicks may occur, and the likely explanation is inequality of the functional length of the mitral chordae tendineae secondary to asymmetrical myocardial hypertrophy. The second heart sound is often abnormal, usually with delay in the aortic component. Some correlation was demonstrated between the relative degrees of left and right ventricular outflow obstruction and the pattern of splitting of the second heart sound. Reversed or partially reversed splitting is usually associated with a more severe left ventricular outflow obstruction. Ejection systolic clicks and early diastolic murmurs occur infrequently, but are not incompatible with the diagnosis of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
