Abstract: This study aimed to investigate whether and how avoidant personality disorder symptoms are related to cardiovascular reactivity to stress tasks with different levels of cognitive demands. The revised Chinese edition of the avoidant personality disorder subscale of Personality Diagnosed Questionnaire-4+ (PDQ-4+) was administered to 222 undergraduate students randomly assigned to psychological stress tasks (i.e., mental arithmetic tasks) with low, moderate, or high cognitive demands (manipulated by task difficulty), during which their physiological data were continuously collected. Results showed that avoidant personality disorder symptoms and cognitive demands of tasks interactively predicted systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) reactivity. In specific, avoidant personality disorder symptoms were not associated with SBP reactivity under the low- and moderate-demand conditions and DBP reactivity under the low-demand condition but were associated with blunted SBP reactivity under the high-demand condition and blunted DBP reactivity under the moderate- and high-demand conditions. These findings indicate that the association between avoidant personality disorder symptoms and cardiovascular reactivity to psychological stress is contingent on the cognitive demands of tasks, which have potential implications for physical health.

TDR measures the rate of vibration decay along rail in dB/m. Higher TDR leads to lower noise radiation. However, new railways are often having low TDR due to the use of resilient fasteners (to provide vibration isolation between rail and supporting structure for ground borne noise concerns), which leads to high noise radiation. Rail damper is used to increase TDR (thus reduces railway noise), where TMD is an efficient damping mechanism dissipating the vibration energy of the rail. TMD provides reactive damping force, maximised after a few cycles of oscillations. TMD force is stronger with continuous excitation than impulse excitation. For convenient purposes in the industry, TDR measurements are primarily conducted by impulse method, which do not allow sufficient time to include reactive TMD force. Therefore, impulse excitation TDR is smaller than continuous excitation TDR. Continuous excitation TDR is considered to reflect more of the real case of wheel/rail interaction excitation during train running. Besides, TDR in terms of time decay in dB/s is an alternative approach for evaluating noise performance of the rail. This paper presents TDR measurement results under different conditions, e.g., impulse excitation against continuous excitation; freely supported short rail (~6m), short rail (~6m) with resilient fastener support as well as site measurements in continuous welded rails.

The detection of fabric defects is an important aspect of textile quality management. This paper proposes an algorithm based on YOLOv3 and deformable convolutional network to solve the problems of low accuracy, high rate of missed and false detection, and high labor cost existing in traditional manual detection methods. First, data enhancement is adopted to address the problem of imbalanced categories of defective samples in the dataset. Then, the Resnet101 model is used to extract the features, and the original convolution operation is replaced by deformable convolution to balance the accuracy and speed of the model. Finally, the focal loss function is introduced to solve the insensitivity problem of the model to difficult defect samples. Experimental results show that this method can quickly and accurately detect defects on the surface of fabrics. In real-time detection, the average accuracy of this method is 8.3% higher than that of YOLOv3. The average accuracy of multiple categories of detection reaches more than 90%, and the detection effect of small defect targets, such as three silk, is also relatively better.

Adaptive empirical Fourier decomposition (AEFD) is a recently developed approach of nonstationary signal mode separation. However, it requires to set the spectrum segmentation boundary relying on the users' professional experience ahead of time. In this paper, a novel spectral envelope-based adaptive empirical Fourier decomposition (SEAEFD) method is proposed to improve the performance of AEFD for rolling bearing vibration signal analysis. In the proposed SEAEFD approach, fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the raw signal is calculated to obtain the frequency spectrum at first. Then, the spectral envelope processing is implemented on the spectrum signal obtained by FFT to achieve an adaptive segmentation. In the traditional segmentation method, generally, the minima and midpoints between adjacent extreme points are taken as the spectrum segmentation boundary, in which the obtained frequency band contains more interference components. To achieve the effect of denoising and restrain the noise that existed in the collected vibration signal, SEAEFD is proposed to optimize the spectrum segmentation boundary so that the obtained frequency band contains the least noise components. Lastly, the inverse FFT is used to reconstruct the component signal within each frequency band and the gained signals are termed as Fourier intrinsic mode functions (FIMFs). Therefore, SEAEFD enables a nonstationary signal to be decomposed into several single-component signals with instantaneous frequencies of physical significance. The proposed SEAEFD method is compared with recently developed methods, including EAEFD, AEFD, EWT, VMD and EMD methods, by analyzing the simulation signals and the measured data of rolling bearing. The results indicate that SEAEFD is valid in diagnosing rolling bearing faults and gets a better diagnosis performance than the compared methods.

Small-diameter artery disease is the most common clinical occurrence, necessitating the development of small-diameter artificial blood vessels. In this study, seven types of poly(-caprolactone)-cellulose acetate (PCL-CA) composite nanofiber membranes were prepared with different proportions of PCL and CA. The adhesion and growth of Mc3t3-e1 cells were considered to confirm the in vitro cytocompatibility of PCL-CA membranes. A smooth stainless-steel mandrel with a diameter of 4 mm was used to roll up the prepared nanofiber membranes to produce the tubular scaffold with 50 °C hot water. The tubular scaffolds were subjected to axial and circumferential tensile tests. The mechanical performance of the PCL-CA tubular scaffold could be improved by increasing the layers. In addition, the burst pressure (BP) of the tubular scaffolds was increased with the layers, and the BPs of six-layer (2380 ± 36.8 mmHg) and eight-layer (3720 ± 80.5 mmHg) tubular scaffolds were much higher than that of the human saphenous vein (2000 mmHg). The compression shape memory performances of the PCL-CA tubular scaffold with different layers were also investigated to simulate and analyze the contraction and expansion of tubular scaffolds. The experimental results showed that the compression strain of the tubular scaffold in the diameter direction reached 35%, and the ultimate shape recovery rate reached 87%. However, the shape fixity rate and shape recovery rate increased, demonstrating that the optimum number of layers can improve the compression shape memory performance of the tubular scaffold. The results of this study, including comprehensive morphological and mechanical properties and cytocompatibility, indicated the potential applicability of PCL-CA tubular scaffolds as tissue engineering grafts.

Developing three-dimensional (3D) woven composites using various woven structures is important in the advanced composite research field. In this study, carbon-fiber 3D woven textile-reinforced epoxy–resin composites using four different woven structures (such as 2.5D, 3D-a, 3D-b, and 3D-c) were designed and fabricated based on a dobby-weaving loom, and vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding technology. In these 3D woven structures, part of weft insertions serves as binder yarns with a special weft interlock structural design, different weft-to-binder yarn ratios are obtained. Out-of-plane quasistatic three-point bending tests and dynamic low-velocity drop-weight impact tests were conducted on these woven composites to study the effect of woven structure on their flexural performance. Nondestructive ultrasonic C-scan and X-ray microcomputed tomography were applied to characterize the failure modes of the post impacted composites. We found that woven structures affect the flexural performance and failure mode of the developed composites, these structures with lower in-plane and binder yarn waviness exhibited higher quasistatic–flexural performance; 3D-c structure with serious in-plane yarn waviness combined with through-thickness binder yarn path exhibited superior impact resistance than other structures and survived more from composite through-thickness cracks and binder yarn breakage failures. Proper structural design is a key to improving flexural performance in specific engineering applications.

Vibration control of composite structures with distributed masses under random loadings is a significant issue. Adjustability of dynamic characteristics including response spectrum peaks and valleys is important for structural vibration control. The vibration control design in space contains structure and conformation designs which combination results in periodic composite structures. In the present paper, spatial periodicity control design is proposed. Stochastic response adjustable performance of a visco-elastomer sandwich plate with harmonic distribution of geometrical and physical parameters and distributed supported masses under random base motion loading is studied. Both facial layer thickness and core layer modulus of the sandwich plate are considered as harmonic distribution in length and width directions as well as periodically distributed masses. Partial differential equations of coupling motions of the sandwich plate system are derived and converted into ordinary differential equations for multi-mode coupling vibration. Generalized stiffness, damping, and mass coefficients are functions of the harmonic distribution parameters. An analysis solution with frequency response function and response spectral density expressions of the sandwich plate system is obtained. Numerical results are given to show the response adjustable performance through the harmonic geometrical and physical parameters and distributed masses. The results have a potential application to stochastic vibration control or dynamic optimization design of smart composite structure systems.

Background Multidrug-resistant bacteria continue to emerge owing to the abuse of antibiotics and have a considerable negative impact on people and the environment. Bacteria can easily form biofilms to improve their survival, which reduces the efficacy of antibacterial drugs. Proteins such as endolysins and holins have been shown to have good antibacterial activity and effectively removal bacterial biofilms and reduce the production of drug-resistant bacteria. Recently, phages and their encoded lytic proteins have attracted attention as potential alternative antimicrobial agents. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sterilising efficacy of phages (SSE1, SGF2, and SGF3) and their encoded lytic proteins (lysozyme and holin), and to further explore their potential in combination with antibiotics. To the ultimate aim is to reduce or replace the use of antibiotics and provide more materials and options for sterilisation. Results Phages and their encoded lytic proteins were confirmed to have great advantages in sterilisation, and all exhibited significant potential for reducing bacterial resistance. Previous studies on the host spectrum demonstrated the bactericidal efficacy of three Shigella phages (SSE1, SGF2, and SGF3) and two lytic proteins (LysSSE1 and HolSSE1). In this study, we investigated the bactericidal effects on planktonic bacteria and bacterial biofilms. A combined sterilisation application of antibiotics, phages, and lytic proteins was performed. The results showed that phages and lytic proteins had better sterilisation effects than antibiotics with 1/2 minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and their effect was further improved when used together with antibiotics. The best synergy was shown when combined with β- lactam antibiotics, which might be related to their mechanism of sterilising action. This approach ensures a bactericidal effect at low antibiotic concentrations. Conclusions This study strengthens the idea that phages and lytic proteins can significantly sterilise bacteria in vitro and achieve synergistic sterilisation effects with specific antibiotics. Therefore, a suitable combination strategy may decrease the risk of drug resistance.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health burden, accounting for approximately 10% of all new cancer cases worldwide. Accumulating evidence suggests that the crosstalk between the host mucins and gut microbiota is associated with the occurrence and development of CRC. Mucins secreted by goblet cells not only protect the intestinal epithelium from microorganisms and invading pathogens but also provide a habitat for commensal bacteria. Conversely, gut dysbiosis results in the dysfunction of mucins, allowing other commensals and their metabolites to pass through the intestinal epithelium, potentially triggering host responses and the subsequent progression of CRC. In this review, we summarize how gut microbiota and bacterial metabolites regulate the function and expression of mucin in CRC and novel treatment strategies for CRC.

Background：American ginseng is an important herb crop and is widely cultivated in China. However, continuous cropping obstacles seriously affect the production of American ginseng, and the reason is still unclear and needs more research. We analyzed the soil microbial alpha diversity and community composition as well as soil physicochemical properties, in bulk soils to assess the changes in soil associated with planting American ginseng. Results：The cultivation of American ginseng resulted in a significant decrease in soil pH. The alpha diversity of soil bacteria and fungi was significantly reduced with the increase of American ginseng planting years. Planting American ginseng also largely altered the community and functional composition of soil bacteria and fungi, in particularly, increased the relative abundance of the pathogenic fungus Fusarium, and readuced the relative abundance of some beneficial microorganisms, such as KD4-96, RB41 and Sphingomonas. Conclusions：Soil acidification, reduction of beneficial taxa and accumulation of fungal pathogens, therefore, may lead to the replantation problem of American ginseng.

The planetary gearbox transmission system in wind turbines has complex structures and generally operates under non-stationary conditions. Thus its measured responses are of high complexity and nonlinearity, which brings a great challenge in the development of reliable condition monitoring techniques for the planetary gearbox transmission system. As a prevalent and effective tool for analyzing the non-stationary vibration signal with strong nonlinearity, the Vold–Kalman filtration technique has excellent capabilities of tracking the targeted harmonic components of vibrations, which can significantly benefit planetary gearbox fault diagnostics. However, the tracking accuracy is heavily enslaved to the selection of the rational bandwidth for the Vold–Kalman filter. An inappropriate bandwidth could impair the characteristics of the targeted harmonic responses, and as a consequence, the monitoring process becomes no longer reliable. To address this issue, a novel bandwidth selection methodology for the Vold–Kalman filter is developed in this paper. Through comprehensively depicting the targeted harmonic response using features in multiple domains, the rational bandwidth can be selected for Vold–Kalman filtering, and then, a reliable monitoring process can be ensured. Additionally, a tacho-less speed estimation procedure is utilized in this paper to acquire the instantaneous rotational speed from the vibration signal directly. With the rational bandwidth and the estimated rotational speed, the desired harmonic components of vibrations can be adaptively extracted and tracked through the Vold–Kalman filter with high accuracy, and at the same time, the irrelevant or unwanted components are excluded completely. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed adaptive Vold–Kalman filtration for wind turbine planetary gearbox diagnostics are demonstrated and validated experimentally.

A Bayesian dynamic linear model (BDLM) framework for data modeling and forecasting is proposed to evaluate the performance of an operational cable-stayed bridge, that is, Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong, by using SHM strain field data acquired. One of the major challenges in dealing with the existing in-service bridge under extreme typhoon loads is to forecast structural behavior using the typhoon response exhibiting non-stationarity, large data fluctuations and strong randomness. The first attempt for SHM data modeling during extreme events, that is, typhoons, using BDLM framework, was conducted in this study. The data from multiple sensors are analyzed for one-step, multi-step ahead forecasting and missing data imputation. The overall bridge behavior is incorporated into a forecasting model by superposition of forecasting results of trend (representing the structural baseline response), periodic component (response component evolving regularly over time), and autoregressive component (time-dependent error) through BDLM algorithm. The results demonstrate that the BDLM framework yielded more accurate calculations compared with Gaussian process and Variational Heteroscedasticity Gaussian Process methods with respect to one-step ahead forecasting for strain data under typhoons. Multi-step ahead forecasting was successfully carried out both for non-typhoon and typhoon responses within an acceptable precision range. The correlation between periodic component and temperature was also investigated. Regarding missing data imputation, BLDM algorithm can generate robust results due to making full use of the monitoring data both before and after the missing segments.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy remains a leading cause of vision loss globally. Here, we investigated the efficacy and safety of Qizhijiangtang capsule (QZJC), a kind of traditional Chinese patent medicine, for patients with NPDR. Methods: This study is a multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial. A total of 100 participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to QZJC group or QZJC placebo group. The treatment duration lasts 24 weeks. The primary outcome is the changes in the degree of retinal microaneurysm lesions assessed by fundus photography and fundus fluorescence angiography before and after treatment. The secondary outcomes include the changes in corrected visual acuity, blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, urinary microalbumin excretion rate, the improvement of TCM syndromes and TCM symptoms. Discussion: We postulate that NPDR patients will benefit from QZJC. If successful, this work will provide preliminary evidence that QZJC could delay the progress of DR. Structural damage detection is usually an ill-posed inverse problem due to the contamination of measurement noise and model error in structural health monitoring. To deal with the ill-posed damage detection problem, l2-regularization is widely used. However, l2-regularization tends to provide nonsparse solutions and distribute identified damage to many undamaged elements, potentially leading to false alarms. Therefore, an adaptive sparse regularization method is proposed, which considers spatially sparse damage as a prior constraint since structural damage often occurs in some locations with stiffness reduction at the sparse elements out of the large total number of elements in an entire structure. First, a response covariance-based convex cost function is established by incorporating an l1-regularized term and an adaptive regularization factor to formulate the sparse regularization-based damage detection problem. Then, optimal sensor placement is conducted to determine the optimal measurement locations where the acceleration responses are adopted for computing the response covariance-based damage index and cost function. Further, the predictor-corrector primal-dual path-following approach, an efficient and robust convex optimization algorithm, is applied to search for solutions to the damage detection problem. Finally, a comparison study with the Tikhonov regularization-based damage detection method is conducted to examine the performance of the proposed adaptive sparse regularization-based method by using an overhanging beam model subjected to different damage scenarios and noise levels. The numerical study demonstrates that the proposed method can effectively and accurately identify damage under multiple damage scenarios with various noise levels, and it outperforms the Tikhonov regularization-based method in terms of high accuracy and few false alarms. The analyses on time consumption, adaptiveness of the sparse regularization factor, model-error resistance, and sensor number influence are conducted for further discussions of the proposed method.
