BACKGROUND: The dropping out of university students is a serious problem faced by higher education all over the world. Studies have shown that academic hardiness is a positive psychological variable to prevent students from dropping out of university and academic burnout. Psychological hardiness can reduce the dropping out by increasing university students’ academic engagement and academic achievement. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discover the influence of psychological hardiness on university student’s academic achievement and the mediating role of academic engagement in the relationship between psychological hardiness and academic achievement. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 615 participants. METHODS: Pearson correlation coefficients were conducted to analyze the relationships between psychological hardiness, academic engagement and academic achievement. Mediation analysis was used to evaluate the mediating role of academic engagement in the relationship between psychological hardiness and academic achievement. RESULTS: The research indicated a closely significant association between psychological hardiness, academic engagement and academic achievement. Psychological hardiness can directly predict academic achievement and can also indirectly predict academic achievement through the intermediary effect of academic engagement. CONCLUSION: This study could have important implications for research by linking psychological hardiness and academic achievement. The results suggest that universities should pay attention to the positive role psychological hardiness plays in improving university students’ academic achievement. This study also benefits the university administrators, especially, those dealing with university students at the risk of dropping out and high academic stress.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is critical for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) detection; however, endoscopists require long-term training to avoid missing superficial lesions.To develop a deep learning computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) system for endoscopic detection of superficial ESCC and investigate its application value.We configured the CAD system for white-light and narrow-band imaging modes based on the YOLO v5 algorithm. A total of 4447 images from 837 patients and 1695 images from 323 patients were included in the training and testing datasets, respectively. Two experts and two non-expert endoscopists reviewed the testing dataset independently and with computer assistance. The diagnostic performance was evaluated in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the CAD system were 0.982 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.969-0.994], 92.9% (95%CI: 89.5%-95.2%), 91.9% (95%CI: 87.4%-94.9%), and 94.7% (95%CI: 89.0%-97.6%), respectively. The accuracy of CAD was significantly higher than that of non-expert endoscopists (78.3%,The diagnostic performance of the CAD system is promising and may assist in improving detectability, particularly for inexperienced endoscopists.

Long-term high stocking density often brings negative effects such as decreased body weight, decreased immunity, and increased mortality to cultured fish, while the effects of short-term stocking are relatively less studied. In this experiment, we characterized spatial and temporal gene expression in black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) liver by establishing two stocking density groups—high (H: 26.5 kg/m3) and low (L: 2.95 kg/m3)—and conducting transcriptome sequencing before collecting liver samples at two time points: 6 h (AL and AH) and 60 d (CL and CH) into the culture trial. There were 648 and 550 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the AL-vs-AH and CL-vs-CH groups, respectively. The DEGs in the AL-vs-AH group were significantly enriched in steroid biosynthesis, terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, the PPAR signaling pathway, proteasome, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, and ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes. The DEGs in the CL-vs-CH group were more significantly enriched in lipid metabolism-related pathways, such as the PPAR signaling pathway, fatty acid metabolism, and cholesterol metabolism. In addition, immune-related pathways such as the phagosome and complement and coagulation cascades were also enriched in the CL-vs-CH group. The expression changes concerning the DEGs in each group were further analyzed. The DEGs related to steroid synthesis, protein synthesis, and the degradation pathways were down-regulated, but immune-related genes were generally up-regulated in the AH group. The DEGs related to lipid synthesis were significantly up-regulated in the CH group, but the DEGs related to lipid consumption and utilization were down-regulated. The expression of immune-related DEGs was also negatively affected in the CH group. These results suggest that acute and chronic crowding stress affects lipid metabolism and immune regulation in the liver of black porgy. Acute stress particularly affected hepatic protein metabolism, while chronic stress showed more effects on hepatic lipid metabolism. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for understanding the effects of high stocking densities upon black porgy and may also provide a reference for crowding stress regulation studies in other fish species.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystemic and placental inflammatory disease that causes maternal and infant health issues. As one of the active components in peony root extract, paeonol (Pae) exerts anti-apoptosis and anti-inflammatory effects. Nonetheless, the protective role of Pae in PE has not yet been characterized. A mouse model of PE was constructed through tail vein injection of 1 mg/d phosphatidylserine/dioleoyl-phosphatidycholine suspension. The levels of inflammatory cytokines in the placenta were examined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, and IL-4) and apoptosis markers (Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3) were tested using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Western blot analysis was performed to detect the protein levels of apoptosis markers and Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling pathway-related molecules. Here, Pae repressed the inflammatory response in the placenta of PE-like mouse models, as demonstrated by the decreased concentrations and mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ and the increased concentrations and mRNA levels of IL-4. Apoptosis in the placentas of PE-like mouse models was attenuated by Pae, as manifested by the downregulated mRNA and protein levels of Bax and cleaved-caspase-3 and the upregulated Bcl-2. Administration of Pae inhibited the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 in the placental tissues of PE mice. The JAK2/STAT3 pathway agonist (SC-39100) reversed Pae treatment-mediated suppression of placental inflammation and apoptosis in PE mice. Overall, Pae inhibits the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway to attenuate placental inflammation and apoptosis in PE mice.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most debilitating and severe mental diseases globally. Increasing evidence has shown that epigenetics is critical for understanding brain function and brain disorders, including MDD. N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10), acting on histones, mRNA and other substrates, has been reported to be involved in epigenetic events, including histone acetylation and mRNA modifications. NAT10 is highly expressed in the brain. However, the potential effects of NAT10 on MDD are still unknown. Here, we exploited chronic mild stress (CMS) to induce anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in mice and found that the expression of NAT10 in the mouse hippocampus was upregulated after CMS treatment. Inhibition of NAT10 by pharmacological methods produced anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects. Neuron-specific overexpression of NAT10 in the hippocampus resulted in anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, accompanied by higher SIRT1 protein levels, and lower dendritic spine densities. Overall, it was found that elevation of NAT10 in hippocampal neurons is involved in the occurrence of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, suggesting that NAT10 could be a potential new target for developing anxiolytics and antidepressants.

Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonists have been clinically used to treat heart failure. However, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood.Using osteoblast MR knockout (MRMR deficiency in osteoblasts alleviates pathological ventricular remodeling after MI, likely through its regulation on OCN. Spironolactone may work through osteoblast MR/OCN axis to exert its therapeutic effects on pathological ventricular remodeling and heart failure in mice and human patients.

Gestational diabetes mechanism is related to lipid metabolism and insulin resistance, but its mechanism of action still needs to be explored. Whether the mechanism for astragalus polysaccharides in the treatment of gestational diabetes is related to the above factors is worth studying. 100 SD rats were in this study selected, in which 10 were set in the control group, and the rest were separated into groups, namely; positive control group, model group, low-dose group, middle-dose group, and high-dose group with 10 rats each. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway inhibitor group (inhibitor group) and AMPK pathway agonist group (agonist group) were then set respectively. In the model group, Adiponectin (APN), superoxide dismutase (SOD), insulin resistance index (ISI), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and p-AMPK were lowest, and TNF-a, Leptin, MDA, TG, TC, LDL, FBG, FINS, IS, IRI, and protein-tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) expressions were highest. The APN, SOD, HDL levels, ISI index, and p-AMPK from the control group were highest, while the positive control group had lower p-AMPK expression. TNF-a, Leptin, MDA, TG, TC, LDL levels, FBG, and expressions of FINS, IS index, IRI index, and PTP1B were lowest (p < 0.05). The model group, agonist p-AMPK expression, HDL level, ISI index were lowest. PTP1B, TG, TC, LDL level, IS, IRI index expressions were the highest; while the control group, inhibitor group p-AMPK expression, HDL level, ISI index were highest. The PTP1B expression, TG, TC, LDL levels, IS, and IRI index were the lowest, while the positive control group had low expression of p-AMPK. Astragalus polysaccharides can therefore promote AMPK phosphorylation by inhibiting the expression of PTP1B protein to reduce insulin resistance and improve lipid metabolism.

Mutations in RET have been found in multiple diseases including isolated and associated congenital anomalies. Here, we report a case presented with disparate phenotypes in each pregnancy but caused by the same novel mutation. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on the proband/abortion product-parental trio and a novel missense variant in RET (chr10:43615610C G; c.2689C G; p.Arg897Gly) was identified. The mother was a low-level somatic carrier of this new mutation, with 17.3% in blood, 19.1% in oralmucous membrane, and 15.7% in urine by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (dd PCR). Our finding not only broadens the mutation spectrum of RET but also gives supportive genetic counseling and timely guidance on fertility choices.

The Paeonia suffruticosa, called as 'Feng Dan', has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. In our chemical investigation on the root bark of the plant, five new phenolic dimers, namely paeobenzofuranone A‒E (1‒5), have been characterized. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, UV, and IR, as well as ECD calculations. Compounds 2, 4, and 5 showed cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 6.7 to 25.1 μM. Compounds 1 and 2 showed certain inhibitory activity on NO production. To the best of our knowledge, the benzofuranone dimers and their cytotoxicity of P. suffruticosa are reported for the first time.

According to the structural features, sedimentary evolution, types of sedimentary facies, source rocks features, diagenesis evolution, reservoir features and hydrocarbon formation mechanism, exploration status and hydrocargon resource potential, this article analyzed the major control fac-tors and hydrocarbon distribution rules of the lithologic reservoirs in continental fault basin. The research shows that three major control factors and one coupled factor (fractures act as a tie) in-fluence hydrocarbon formation of lithologic traps in Nantun Formation of Tanan Sag, which in-clude sand body types, effective source rocks and effective reservoirs. With the increase in depth, enough hydrocarbon generate in source rock under thermal evolution. Hydrocarbon generation and expulsion are more intensive when it comes to the depth threshold and critical conditions of hydrocarbon supplying are met. Traps that surrounded or contacted by source rock, or communi-cated by fault are qualified to form reservoirs. As buried depth increases, hydrocarbon genera-tion-expulsion intensity grows and the trap is more petroliferous. Hydrocarbon accumulation and reservoir formation are also controlled by sandbody accumulation conditions. When it meets the critical conditions of hydrocarbon generation and concrete oil and gas are charged in, better phys-ical properties of sandbody always indicate more hydrocarbon accumulation in the trap. Alloca-tion of sand type, effective source rock and effective reservoir is optimized under the effect of fractures, and coupled hydrocarbon reservoir with these three elements.

Background Reduced survival of red blood cells (RBCs) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is thought to contribute to renal anaemia. Although renal anaemia improved greatly because of the wide use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and the advancement of dialysis techniques, RBC longevity seems not to be obviously ameliorated. Methods In this single-centre, single-arm trial, patients who had been undergoing haemodialysis and ESA therapy with epoetin alfa for at least 12 weeks changed their anti-anaemia drugs from epoetin alfa to oral roxadustat three times per week for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was the change in RBC lifespan from baseline at week 24. The change in the circulating percentage of eryptotic RBCs, RBC deformability and RBC oxygen transport ability were also assessed. Results A total of 27 patients were enrolled, with 26 completing the full course of intervention. At baseline, the average RBC lifespan was 60.1 days [standard deviation (SD) 14.4; n = 27]. At the end of the study period, 26 patients had an RBC lifespan measurement (83.9 days on average; SD 21.9). The RBC lifespan increased by 22.8 days on average [95% confidence interval (CI) 15.5–30.0, P Conclusion Roxadustat prolonged RBC lifespan in patients with long-term haemodialysis.

Challenges and competition are being faced in higher education. Students’ unsatisfactory academic performance and dropouts are obvious problems worldwide. The “student-centered” pedagogy requires universities to pay attention to the needs of students. Research has demonstrated that academic self-efficacy is a positive psychological variable in the prevention of students becoming academically burnt out and withdrawing from their studies. By increasing academic engagement and improving academic performance, academic self-efficacy can reduce the dropout rates. This study attempted to achieve an in-depth comprehension of the nexus between academic self-efficacy and academic achievement among university students and the mediating role of academic engagement in the association between the two. A total of 258 participants were included in the cross-sectional study. The relationships among academic self-efficacy, academic engagement, and academic performance were examined using Pearson correlation coefficients. In order to examine the intermediating role of academic engagement in the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic performance, a mediation analysis was applied. A favorable and strong correlation among academic self-efficacy, academic engagement, and academic performance was found in this study. Academic self-efficacy can be a direct predictor of academic achievement and can also be an indirect predictor of academic achievement via the intermediating effect of academic engagement. The findings of this study provide theoretical and practical recommendations for university researchers and administrators. The findings confirm the mediating role of academic engagement between academic self-efficacy and academic performance. The results provide universities with evidence for use in the design of projects and programs for the improvement of students’ academic performance. Increasing the level of academic self-efficacy and enhancing academic engagement are of utmost importance for university students to maintain and improve their academic performance.

Aims Positive associations between periodontitis (PD) and atherosclerosis have been established, but the causality and mechanisms are not clear. We aimed to explore the causal roles of PD in atherosclerosis and dissect the underlying mechanisms. Methods and results A mouse model of PD was established by ligation of molars in combination with application of subgingival plaques collected from PD patients and then combined with atherosclerosis model induced by treating atheroprone mice with a high-cholesterol diet (HCD). PD significantly aggravated atherosclerosis in HCD-fed atheroprone mice, including increased en face plaque areas in whole aortas and lesion size at aortic roots. PD also increased circulating levels of triglycerides and cholesterol, hepatic levels of cholesterol, and hepatic expression of rate-limiting enzymes for lipogenesis. Using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing, Fusobacterium nucleatum was identified as the most enriched PD-associated pathobiont that is present in both the oral cavity and livers. Co-culture experiments demonstrated that F. nucleatum directly stimulated lipid biosynthesis in primary mouse hepatocytes. Moreover, oral inoculation of F. nucleatum markedly elevated plasma levels of triglycerides and cholesterol and promoted atherogenesis in HCD-fed ApoE−/− mice. Results of RNA-seq and Seahorse assay indicated that F. nucleatum activated glycolysis, inhibition of which by 2-deoxyglucose in turn suppressed F. nucleatum-induced lipogenesis in hepatocytes. Finally, interrogation of the molecular mechanisms revealed that F. nucleatum-induced glycolysis and lipogenesis by activating PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway in hepatocytes. Conclusions PD exacerbates atherosclerosis and impairs lipid metabolism in mice, which may be mediated by F. nucleatum-promoted glycolysis and lipogenesis through PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling in hepatocytes. Treatment of PD and specific targeting of F. nucleatum are promising strategies to improve therapeutic effectiveness of hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis.

The ethnobotanical plant Marsdenia tenacissima has been used for hundreds of years for Dai people in Yunnan Province, China. Previously, chemical investigations on this plant have revealed that pregnane glycosides were the main biological constituents. Nine new pregnane glycosides, marsdeosides A–I (1–9), were isolated from cultivated dried stems of the medicinal plant Marsdenia tenacissima in this study. The structures were analyzed by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D, 2D NMR, HRESIMS, and IR spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of the sugar moieties were identified by comparing the Rf values and specific optical rotations with those of the commercially available standard samples and the data reported in the literature. Marsdeosides A (1) featured an unusual 8,14-seco-pregnane skeleton. Compounds 1, 8, and 9 showed activity against nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophage RAW264.7, with IC50 values of 37.5, 38.8, and 42.8 μM (L-NMMA was used as a positive control, IC50 39.3 μM), respectively. This study puts the knowledge of the chemical profile of the botanical plant M. tenacissima one step forward and, thereby, promotes the sustainable utilization of the resources of traditional folk medicinal plants.

Sustainable smart cities need to focus on energy production and use. By installing solar panels, prosumers may contribute to the energy production in the city. The use of solar panels is particularly relevant to free-standing residential buildings. Prosumers may also trade flexibility, the ability to shift energy use to periods when the total energy consumption is lower. Prosumers may also store energy for future sale or consumption. An aggregator is a new role connecting prosumers with energy providers. The aggregator negotiates terms, provides flexibility on behalf of its prosumers, and may even provide energy storage capabilities. This chapter describes the evolving role of aggregators and their possible business models. The aggregators will contribute to smarter energy production and use in smart cities.

With the globalization of network education and the design and construction of all aspects of engineering, network science education is playing an increasingly important role in higher education and even the lifelong education system of college students. The purpose of this article is to study emotional interaction in deep learning network education and analyze the status quo of its behavioral decision-making mechanism. It uses research literature method, algorithmic statistical method, and questionnaire survey method to investigate specific groups of people; analyzes the status quo of emotional interaction and behavioral decision-making mechanism; improves statistical algorithms; and explores an old style emotional cognitive decision-making model. In this paper, a questionnaire survey of a university shows that the proportion of students whose online learning time is 1.5–2 hours is about 10.3% and the proportion of 1–1.5 hours is about 6.8%. The study time of students’ online courses is mainly concentrated. The study time between 0.5 and 1 hour accounts for about 83.2%; about 2.3% of learners rarely use the Internet, less than 0.5 hour; and 1% of students hardly use online courses and may rely more on traditional classroom teaching. Further research showed the behavior of their emotional interaction: interactive teaching network in six modules reached the upper level, the peak value of the curve was 0.737, the bottom value was 0.115, and the transitivity was above 0.115. From deep statistical learning algorithms to completing network science education, designing or modifying more comprehensive and faster bpq-l learning algorithms based on traditional learning algorithms can allow us to find target sentiments.

What are the pregnancy outcomes of IVF vitrified-warmed embryo transfer (IVF-FET) carried out in a clinical setting located at an altitude of 3650 m in Tibet, China?A retrospective analysis of 238 infertility couples (n = 344 treatment cycles) who underwent FET treatment at the Xizang Fukang Hospital, Tibet. The overall clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rate, miscarriage rate and ectopic pregnancy rate were statistically analysed. Women were categorized into two groups based on age: 35 years or younger (n = 265 cycles) and over 35 years (n = 79 cycles). The general characteristics and pregnancy outcomes were compared between the two groups.The clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rate, miscarriage rate, and ectopic pregnancy rate of the 344 FET cycles were 43.02%, 30.90%, 35.17%, 18.24% and 1.35%, respectively. The clinical pregnancy rate (46.04% versus 32.91%), implantation rate (33.92% versus 21.01%) and live birth rate (38.11% versus 25.32%) in the group aged 35 years or younger were significantly greater than those in the group aged over 35 years (P = 0.039, P = 0.004, P = 0.037). The miscarriage rate (17.21% versus 23.08%) and ectopic pregnancy rate (0.82% versus 3.85%) were not significantly different in the two groups.A live birth rate of 35.17% can be achieved with IVF-FET in high-altitude areas (3650 m above sea level). Maternal age is still an important determinant of clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, and live birth rate of infertile patients in high-altitude areas.

Microglia/macrophage activation plays an essential role in Ischemic stroke (IS). Nuclear receptor corepressor 1 (NCoR1) has been identified as a vital regulator in macrophages. The present study aims to explore the functions of macrophage NCoR1 in IS. Macrophage NCoR1 knockout (MNKO) mice and littermate control mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Our data showed that macrophage NCoR1 deficiency significantly reduced the infarct size and infarct volume as well as brain edema after MCAO. Additionally, MNKO induced less microglia/macrophage infiltration and activation, neuroinflammation, apoptosis of neuronal cells, and BBB disruption in brains after IS. Mechanistic studies revealed that NCoR1 interacted with LXRβ in microglia and MNKO impaired the activation of the Nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway in brains after IS. Our data demonstrated that macrophage NCoR1 deficiency inhibited microglia/macrophage activation and protected against IS. Targeting NCoR1 in microglia/macrophage may be a potential approach for IS treatment.

As knowledge workers, faculty members are pivotal for the sustainable development of universities. We explored the psychological empowerment–job performance relationship with 216 faculty members of a Chinese university. Participants completed two self-report scales that have been shown to have adequate reliability and validity, which were used to assess psychological empowerment and job performance. The results show there was a significant positive correlation between psychological empowerment and job performance, such that each psychological empowerment dimension was positively correlated with each job performance dimension. Our findings highlight the importance of the psychological empowerment of university faculty members, because it is necessary for their professional development, and as the driving force for sustainable development of universities, they can contribute toward promoting academic productivity.

This study aimed to visualize profiles and hotspots in dysmenorrhea research through a bibliometric analysis to deepen the understanding of knowledge in this field.Methods: Articles and reviews on dysmenorrhea published from 2000 to 2021 were collected. We summarized standard bibliometric indicators. Publications were systematically assessed in terms of country, institution, author, journal, reference, and keywords using Citespace, VOSviewer, Bibliometric, and an online platform. Besides, correlation analyses of country-specific characteristics and bibliometric indicators were performed.Results: 3407 publications were included. Dysmenorrhea-related publications have been increasing steadily annually. China and the United States were the most productive and academically influential countries, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that economic power is an essential factor influencing scientific activity. However, collaboration in dysmenorrhea research remained weak. Natl Yang Ming Univ and Vercellini P were the most productive institution and influential author, respectively. A significant proportion of dysmenorrhea research was published in high-impact journals and it was explored at a multidisciplinary level. Current research topics focus on two primary areas: (1) pathophysiology, such as pathogenesis, oxidative stress, and functional connectivity, and (2) public health impacts, such as quality of life, burden, depression, and exercise.Conclusion: Dysmenorrhea research has received extensive attention from scholars and is rapidly evolving. Improved collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration may advance this field. Public health research and pathophysiological exploration of dysmenorrhea are current research hotspots and may also be a focus of research in the coming years.Keywords: bibliometric analysis, dysmenorrhea, women, pain, research hotspots

This paper evaluates the thermo-economics of power-to-chemicals using solar energy, with the chemicals being methane, methanol, and gasoline. In addition to the optimal technology sizing and heat cascade utilization, this paper also considers the optimal molten-salt solar power tower (MSPT) design, as the MSPT significantly affects the levelized product cost. A bi-level optimization is proposed, employing mixed-integer linear programming at the lower level with heat and mass integration for optimizing sizes and operating strategies of technologies, and with heat cascade utilization and a genetic algorithm at the upper level for optimizing the MSPT design. In the upper level, the full-load storage hours, design direct normal irradiance, solar multiple, and sizes of the MSPT are optimized. The electricity sources considered are the MSPT, photovoltaic (PV) with daily electricity storage, and the electrical grid as a complementary technology to satisfy the targeted daily product demand. Cost-competitiveness of solar-driven chemical synthesis is thoroughly assessed via considering sensitivity analysis on 1) regional solar resource endowments and actual local demands; 2) electricity sources, that is, PV vs. MSPT; and 3) the scale effect represented by different chemicals’ yield. The results show that the levelized methane cost ranges from 4.5 to 8.5 €/kg, depending on the location, plant size, and annual power contribution of concentrated solar power. Due to the larger mass production, the levelized cost of methanol and gasoline is lower: 1.5–2.2 €/kg for methanol and 4–6 €/kg for gasoline. The findings highlight the significance of location choice, that is, natural endowment of solar radiation and carbon sources. Using the syngas co-electrolysis pathway and direct solar radiation 100 kWh/m2 higher, the methane production cost is decreased by 2.4 €/kg. Sensitivity analysis performed on plant scale reveals that a compact, small-scale system is far too expensive. The levelized cost of methane could be decreased by 1.2 €/kg when the plant is scaled up from 4,000 to 20,000 kg/day H2. Due to its expensive electricity storage and limited working hours, PV is typically not chosen as a power source. Overall, solar fuels are unlikely to be cost-competitive in the near future when compared to market prices for all three compounds under consideration.
