Turbulent transport is regarded as one of the key issues in magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, both for tokamaks in stellarators. In this letter, we show that a significant decrease in the turbulent heat flux can be obtained in an efficient manner by coupling stellarator optimization with linear gyrokinetic simulations. This is accomplished by computing the quasi-linear heat flux at each step of the optimization process, as well as the deviation from quasisymmetry, and minimizing their sum, leading to a balance between neoclassical and turbulent transport., 6 pages, 3 figures

However, the mechanisms of OME are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to determine the function and the mechanism of the IL-17 cytokine in the pathogenesis of OME and to investigate IL-17 as a potential strategy for the treatment of OME.Methods: In this study, the OME rat model was induced by ovalbumin (OVA) as previously described. The severity of OME was determined with an oto-endoscope, by histochemical analysis, and by acoustic immittance. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis of RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data was carried out to analyze the signaling pathways related to the pathogenesis of OME, which indicated that IL-17 is involved in OME. The anti-IL-17A monoclonal antibody was administrated by nasal drip to block IL-17 to treat OME in the rat model. The rats were finally injected intraperitoneally with the inhibitor of Notch signaling pathway to study the mechanisms of IL-17-induced inflammation. Serum and lavage fluid were collected for the detection of related cytokines, and middle ear tissue was collected for Western blot, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis.Results: KEGG analysis of RNA-seq data suggested that the IL-17 signaling pathway might be involved in the onset of OME. IL-17 expression was confirmed to be increased in both the serum and the middle ear of the rat model. The monoclonal antibody against IL-17 neutralized IL-17, inhibited the inflammation in the middle ear, and reduced the overall severity of OME in vivo. Furthermore, the Notch signaling pathway was activated upon IL-17 upregulation in OME and was suppressed by IL-17 blockage. However, there was no change in IL-17 expression after Notch inhibitor treatment, which reduced the severity of OME in the rat middle ear.Conclusion: IL-17 plays a key role in the pathogenesis of the OVA-induced OME rat model. GX is a code for solving the nonlinear gyrokinetic system for low-frequency turbulence in magnetized plasmas, particularly tokamaks and stellarators. In GX, our primary motivation and target is fusion reactor design, rather than physics exploration or comprehensive validation studies. This has led to several code and algorithm design decisions, specifically chosen to prioritize time to solution. First, we have used a discretization algorithm that is pseudo-spectral in the entire phase-space, including a Laguerre-Hermite pseudo-spectral formulation of velocity space, which allows for smooth interpolation between coarse gyrofluid-like resolutions and finer conventional gyrokinetic resolutions. Additionally, we have built GX to natively target graphics processors (GPUs), which are the fastest computational platforms available today. Finally, we have taken advantage of the reactor-relevant limit of small $\rho_*$ by using the radially-local flux-tube approach. In this paper we present details about the gyrokinetic system and the numerical algorithms used to solve it in GX. We then present several numerical benchmarks against established gyrokinetic codes in both tokamak and stellarator magnetic geometries to verify that GX correctly simulates gyrokinetic turbulence in the small $\rho_*$ limit. Moreover, we show that the convergence properties of the Laguerre-Hermite spectral velocity formulation are quite favorable for nonlinear problems of interest. Coupled with GPU acceleration, which we also investigate with scaling studies, this enables GX to be able to produce useful turbulence simulations in minutes on one (or a few) GPUs. Among them, 1914 participants (response rate: 88.4%) underwent comprehensive eye examinations. The prevalence and causes of visual impairment were estimated, and the associated factors were identified.Results: The standardized prevalence of mild visual impairment (< 6/12 to ≥ 6/18), moderate to severe visual impairment (MSVI) (< 6/18 to ≥ 3/60), and blindness (< 3/60) in the better eye were 20.5%, 25.8%, and 3.4%, respectively. The leading cause of visual impairment was cataract (49.7%), followed by uncorrected refractive error (26.5%), myopic maculopathy (5.8%), and posterior capsular opacification (5.5%). Optical coherence tomography revealed that vitreoretinal interface abnormalities were the third most common cause of monocular mild visual impairment (2.2%) and MSVI (4.4%) in the elderly population. A large number of patients with visual impairment (81.7%) were amenable to undergo the interventions. Visual impairment was associated with advanced age (odds ratio [OR], 1.09 per year; p< 0.001), female sex (OR, 1.59; p=0.003), self-reported visual impairment (OR, 1.91; p< 0.001), cognitive impairment (OR, 1.40, p=0.005), and high educational level (OR, 0.75; primary, p=0.045; and OR, 0.53, secondary or higher; p< 0.001).Conclusion: Visual impairment was common in the Chinese elderly population and a severe health and social problem. Here, we focused on the functional polymorphism of EGFR in the 3ʹ-untranslated region (UTR), aiming to reveal the potential mechanisms by which functional polymorphism is associated with the risk and development of HCC in the Han Chinese population.Methods: This study was a hospital-based case-control study. A total of 600 patients were enrolled, and another 600 healthy volunteers served as controls. The miR-associated SNPs in EGFR were screened, and genotyping was performed by TaqMan allele differential analysis. In this study, genotyping, real-time PCR, cell transfection and double luciferase reporter gene were used for subsequent analysis.Results: HBV/HCV infection instead of alcohol exposure, smoking exposure, hypertension or diabetes mellitus was associated with an increased risk of HCC. Compared with TT genotypes, TG and GG genotypes of EGFR rs884225 were significantly associated with reduced HCC risk. The stratified analysis of association between rs884225 and HCC subgroup feature reveal a highly correlation with tumor size. Furthermore, qRT-PCR confirmed that EGFR rs884225, TG and GG genotypes were more likely to bind to miR-3196 and down-regulate EGFR level in cells, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation.Conclusion: This study suggested that EGFR rs884225 is associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer and may be a developing biomarker.Keywords: miR-3196, polymorphism, proliferation, hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC, epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is recognized as an independent risk factor for UAT mucosal disorders, and in this review, we describe the components and functions of the mucosal barrier and the results of LPR-induced mucosal inflammation in the UAT. We discuss the interactions between the refluxate and the mucosal components and the mechanisms through which these damaging events disrupt and alter the mucosal barriers. Simple structural modifications using oxidation and methylation of a quinoline-containing diarylethene result in dramatic variation of photophysical properties. Turn-on fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and red-green-blue (RGB) switching were achieved in three different related compounds. Photoswitchable diarylethenes (DAEs) that exhibit turn-on fluorescence are in high demand for super-resolution microscopy, and the development of purely organic phosphorescent materials in the amorphous state is attractive but challenging. The findings reported here provide a novel toolkit for designing turn-on fluorescence DAEs for super-resolution microscopy and extending the scope of amorphous RTP materials. More importantly, we bridge between these two fundamentally significant photochemical and photophysical phenomena, and reveal structure–property relationships between DAE photochromism and RTP., Simple structural modifications using oxidation and methylation of a quinoline-containing diarylethene result in dramatic variation of photophysical properties.

The matrix proteins (M) of many enveloped RNA viruses mediate virus assembly and budding. However, it remains poorly understood how M are involved in virus budding and how they interact with envelope proteins. Here, we show that the expression level of Nipah (NiV) M in particles produced by the host cells deviates from a gamma distribution and does not reflect that of the host cells, indicating assembly of the NiV-M in the process. Our data reveal that NiV-M affects the circularity of the particles while the NiV envelope proteins do not. The organization of NiV envelope proteins on the membrane of the particles is similar to those that do not express NiV-M, suggesting that NiV-M does not directly interact with the envelope proteins during assembly and budding.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements have established the phenomenon of kink in band dispersion of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors. However, systematic studies of the kink in electron-doped cuprates are still lacking experimentally. We performed $in$-$situ$ ARPES measurements on ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x{\rm CuO}_{4\pm\delta}$ (LCCO) thin films over a wide electron doping ($n$) range from 0.05 to 0.23. While the nodal kink is nearly invisible, an antinodal kink around 45 meV, surviving above 200 K, is observed for $n\sim0.05-0.19$, whose position is roughly independent of doping. The fact that the antinodal kink observed at high temperatures and in the highly overdoped region favors the phonon mechanism with contributions from the Cu-O bond-stretching mode and the out-of-plane oxygen buckling mode. Our results also suggest that the antinodal kink of LCCO is only weakly coupled to its superconductivity.

We performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements $in$-$situ$ on $T'$-${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x\rm {CuO}_{4\pm\delta}$ (LCCO) thin films over the extended doping range prepared by the refined ozone/vacuum annealing method. Electron doping level ($n$), estimated from the measured Fermi surface volume, varies from 0.05 to 0.23, which covers the whole superconducting dome. We observed an absence of the insulating behavior around $n \sim$ 0.05 and the Fermi surface reconstruction shifted to $n \sim$ 0.11 in LCCO compared to that of other electron-doped cuprates at around 0.15, suggesting that antiferromagnetism is strongly suppressed in this material. The possible explanation may lie in the enhanced -$t'$ /$t$ in LCCO for the largest $\rm{La^{3+}}$ ionic radius among all the Lanthanide elements.

We discovered that the function of a native neuropeptide, somatostatin (SST), is switched through its conformational transition in the presence of metal ions, metal-free amyloid-beta (Abeta), and metal-bound Abeta that are associated with toxicity observed in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to establish a noninvasive radiomics model based on computed tomography (CT), with favorable sensitivity and specificity to predict EGFR mutation status in GGO-featured lung adenocarcinoma that subsequently guiding the administration of targeted therapy.MethodClinical-pathological information and preoperative CT-images of 636 lung adenocarcinoma patients (464, 100, and 72 in the training, internal, and external validation sets, respectively) that underwent GGO lesions resection were included. A total of 1476 radiomic features were extracted with gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT).ResultsThe established radiomics model containing 252 selected features showed an encouraging discrimination performance of EGFR mutation status (mutant or wild-type), and the predictive ability was superior to that of the clinical model (AUC: 0.901 vs. 0.674, 0.813 vs. 0.730, and 0.801 vs. 0.746 the training, internal, and external validation sets, respectively). The combined radiomics plus clinical model showed no additional benefit over the radiomics model in predicting EGFR status (AUC: 0.909 vs. 0.901, 0.803 vs. 0.813, 0.808 vs. 0.801, respectively, in three cohorts). Uniquely, this model was validated in a cohort of lung adenocarcinoma patients who undertaken adjuvant EGFR-TKIs and harbored unresected GGOs, leading to a significantly improved potency of EGFR-TKIs (response rate: 33.9% vs. 62.5%, P =0.04; before- and after-prediction, respectively).ConclusionThis presented radiomics model can be served as a noninvasive and time-saving approach for predicting the EGFR mutation status in lung adenocarcinoma presenting as GGO.Key pointsWe developed a GGO-specific radiomics model containing 252 radiomics features for EGFR mutation status differentiation.An AUC of 0.813 and 0.801 in the internal and external validation cohort, respectively, were achieved.The radiomics model was utilized in clinical translation in an adjuvant EGFR-TKIs cohort with unresected GGOs. A significant improvement in the potency of EGFR-TKIs was achieved (response rate: 33.9% vs. 62.5%, P =0.04; before- and after-prediction).

Constrained by the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem, in all so-far experimentally determined Weyl semimetals (WSMs) the Weyl points (WPs) always appear in pairs in the momentum space with no exception. As a consequence, Fermi arcs occur on surfaces which connect the projections of the WPs with opposite chiral charges. However, this situation can be circumvented in the case of unpaired WP, without relevant surface Fermi arc connecting its surface projection, appearing singularly, while its Berry curvature field is absorbed by nontrivial charged nodal walls. Here, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations, we show experimentally that a singular Weyl point emerges in PtGa at the center of the Brillouin zone (BZ), which is surrounded by closed Weyl nodal walls located at the BZ boundaries and there is no Fermi arc connecting its surface projection. Our results reveal that nontrivial band crossings of different dimensionalities can emerge concomitantly in condensed matter, while their coexistence ensures the net topological charge of different dimensional topological objects to be zero. Our observation extends the applicable range of the original Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem which was derived from zero dimensional paired WPs with opposite chirality., 24 pages, 4 figures

As a foundation of condensed matter physics, the normal states of most metals are successfully described by Landau Fermi liquid theory with quasi-particles and their Fermi surfaces (FSs). The FSs sometimes become deformed or gapped at low temperatures owing to quasi-particle interactions, known as FS instabilities. A notable example of a FS deformation that breaks only the rotation symmetry, namely Pomeranchuk instability, is the d-wave FS distortion, which is also proposed as one possible origin of electron nematicity in iron-based superconductors. However, no clear evidence has been made for its existence, mostly owing to the mixture of multiple orders. Here we report an unequivocally observation of the Pomeranchuk nematic order in floating monolayer (ML) FeSe on 1 ML-FeSe/SrTiO3 substrate. By using angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy, we find remarkably that the dxz and dyz bands are degenerate at the Brillouin zone center (Gamma point), while their splitting is even larger at zone corner (M point), in stark contrast to that in bulk FeSe. Our detailed analysis show that the momentum-dependent nematic order in floating monolayer FeSe is coming from the d-wave Pomeranchuk instability at M point, shedding light on the origin of the ubiquitous nematicity in iron-based superconductors. Our results establish the single-layer high-Tc superconductors as an excellent material platform for investigating emergent quantum physics under complex intertwinement., 18 pages

This method is independent of the Fourier transform, and can be applied to the second order differential operators whose heat kernels satisfying Gaussian upper bounds. As an application, we establish a Carleson measure characterization of the Campanato type space $BMO^{\gamma}_{L}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ via $\{e^{-t{L}^\alpha}\}_{t>0}$., Comment: 46 pages

Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles can arise in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) in which the energy bands are nondegenerate, resulting from inversion or time-reversal symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, experimental evidence for magnetically induced WSMs is scarce. Here, using photoemission spectroscopy, we observe that the degeneracy of Bloch bands is already lifted in the paramagnetic phase of EuCd2As2. We attribute this effect to the itinerant electrons experiencing quasi-static and quasi–long-range ferromagnetic fluctuations. Moreover, the spin-nondegenerate band structure harbors a pair of ideal Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Hence, we show that long-range magnetic order and the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry are not essential requirements for WSM states in centrosymmetric systems and that WSM states can emerge in a wider range of condensed matter systems than previously thought., Science Advances, 5 (7), ISSN:2375-2548

We combine transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate several low energy manifestations of the Hund coupling in a canonical FeSC family Li(Fe,Co)As. We determine the doping dependence of the coherent-incoherent crossover temperature and the quasi-particle effective mass enhancement in the normal state. Our tunneling spectroscopy result in the superconducting state supports the idea that superconductivity emerging from Hund's metal state displays a universal maximal superconducting gap vs transition temperature (2$\Delta_{max}/k_{B}T_{c}$) value, which is independent of doping level and $T_{c}$.

Recently, sequential item recommendation, especially session-based recommendation, has aroused wide research interests. However, existing sequential recommendation approaches either ignore the historical sessions or consider all historical sessions without any distinction that whether the historical sessions are relevant or not to the current session, which motivates us to distinguish the effect of each historical session and identify relevant historical sessions for recommendation. In light of this, we propose a novel deep learning based sequential recommender framework for session-based recommendation, which takes Nonlocal Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network as the main building blocks. Specifically, we design a two-layer nonlocal architecture to identify historical sessions that are relevant to the current session and learn the long-term user preferences mostly from these relevant sessions. Besides, we also design a gated recurrent unit (GRU) enhanced by the nonlocal structure to learn the short-term user preferences from the current session. Finally, we propose a novel approach to integrate both long-term and short-term user preferences in a unified way to facilitate training the whole recommender model in an end-to-end manner. We conduct extensive experiments on two widely used real-world datasets, and the experimental results show that our model achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods.

Connate topological superconductor (TSC) combines topological surface states with nodeless superconductivity in a single material, achieving effective $p$-wave pairing without interface complication. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and $in$-$situ$ molecular beam epitaxy, we studied the momentum-resolved superconductivity in $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film. We found that the superconducting gap of topological surface state ($\Delta_{TSS} \sim$ 3.8 meV) is anomalously enhanced from its bulk value ($\Delta_b \sim$ 0.8 meV). The ratio of $2\Delta_{TSS}/k_BT_c \sim14.2$, is substantially larger than the BCS value. By measuring $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ bulk single crystal as a comparison, we clearly observed the upward-shift of chemical potential in the film. In addition, a concomitant increasing of surface weight on the topological surface state was revealed by our first principle calculation, suggesting that the Dirac-fermion-mediated parity mixing may cause this anomalous superconducting enhancement. Our results establish $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film as a unique case of connate TSCs with a highly enhanced topological superconducting gap, which may stabilize Majorana zero modes at a higher temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Superconductors with topological surface or edge states have been intensively explored for the prospect of realizing Majorana bound states, which obey non-Abelian statistics and are crucial for topological quantum computation. The traditional routes for making topological insulator/superconductor and semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures suffer fabrication difficulties and can only work at low temperature. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the evolution of a topological transition of band structure nearby the Fermi level in two-dimensional high-T$_{c}$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$/SrTiO$_{3}$(001) monolayers, fully consistent with our theoretical calculations. Furthermore, evidence of edge states is revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy with assistance of theoretical calculations. In condensed matter systems, chiral topological nodes are robust band crossing points in momentum space that carry nonzero Chern numbers. The chirality is manifested by the presence of surface Fermi arcs connecting the projections of nodes with opposite Chern numbers. In addition to the well-known Weyl nodes, theorists have proposed several other types of chiral topological nodes in condensed matter systems, but the direct experimental evidence of their existence is still lacking. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal two types of new chiral nodes, namely the spin-1 nodes and charge-2 Dirac nodes, at the band crossing points near the Fermi level in CoSi, the projections of which on the (001) surface are connected by topologically protected surface Fermi arcs. As these chiral nodes in CoSi are enforced at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center and corner by the crystalline symmetries, the surface Fermi arcs connecting their projections form a non-contractible path traversing the entire (001) surface BZ, in sharp contrast to pairs of Weyl nodes with small separation. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a genetically complex, highly aggressive hematological malignancy. Prognosis is usually with grim. PDZ and LIM domain proteins (PDLIM) are involved in the regulation of a variety of biological processes, including cytoskeletal organization, cell differentiation, organ development, neural signaling or tumorigenesis. The clinical and prognostic value of the PDLIM family in AML is unclear. To understand the role of PDLIM expression in AML, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was screened and 155 de novo AML patients with complete clinical information and the expression data of the PDLIM family were included in the study. The clinical and molecular characteristics associated with the expression of different members of the PDLIM family were summarized using various statistical methods. The cuprate superconductors distinguish themselves from the conventional superconductors in that a small variation in the carrier doping can significantly change the superconducting transition temperature (T_c), giving rise to a superconducting dome where a pseudogap (ref. 1,2) emerges in the underdoped region and a Fermi liquid appears in the overdoped region. Thus a systematic study of the properties over a wide doping range is critical for understanding the superconducting mechanism. Here, we report a new technique to continuously dope the surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x through an ozone/vacuum annealing method. Using in-situ ARPES, we obtain precise quantities of energy gaps and the coherent spectral weight over a wide range of doping. We discover that the d-wave component of the quasiparticle gap is linearly proportional to the Nernst temperature that is the onset of superconducting vortices (ref. 3), strongly suggesting that the emergence of superconducting pairing is concomitant with the onset of free vortices, with direct implications for the onset of superconducting phase coherence at T_c and the nature of the pseudogap phenomena., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, supplementary materials included

Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study superconductivity that emerges in two extreme cases, from a Fermi liquid phase (LiFeAs) and an incoherent bad-metal phase (FeTe0.55Se0.45). We find that although the electronic coherence can strongly reshape the single-particle spectral function in the superconducting state, it is decoupled from the maximum superconducting pairing amplitude, which shows a universal scaling that is valid for all FeSCs. Our observation excludes pairing scenarios in the BCS and the BEC limit for FeSCs and calls for a universal strong coupling pairing mechanism for the FeSCs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) and B cells present in gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT) are both implicated in the resolution of colitis. However, how the functions of these cells are coordinated remains elusive. We used the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model combined with gene-modified mice to monitor the progression of colitis, and simultaneously examine the number of Tregs and B cells, and the production of IgA antibodies. We found that DSS-treated mice exhibited more severe colitis in the absence of B cells, and that the adoptive transfer of B cells attenuated the disease. Moreover, the transfer of IL-10(-/-) B cells also attenuated colitis, suggesting that B cells inhibited colitis through an interleukin-10 (IL-10)-independent pathway. Furthermore, antibody depletion of Tregs resulted in exacerbated colitis. Intriguingly, the number of GALT Tregs in B cell-deficient mice was significantly decreased during colitis and the adoptive transfer of B cells into these mice restored the Treg numbers, indicating that B cells contribute to Treg homeostasis. We also found that B cells induced the proliferation of Tregs that in turn promoted B-cell differentiation into IgA-producing plasma cells. These results demonstrate that B cells and Tregs interact and cooperate to prevent excessive immune responses that can lead to colitis.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaCr$_2$As$_2$, which has the same crystal structure as BaFe$_2$As$_2$, a parent compound of Fe-based superconductors. We determine the Fermi surface of this material and its band dispersion over 5 eV of binding energy. Very moderate band renormalization (1.35) is observed for only two bands. We attribute this small renormalization to enhanced direct exchange as compared to Fe in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and to a larger contribution of the $e_g$ orbitals in the composition of the bands forming the Fermi surface, leading to an effective valence count that is reduced by Fe $d$ - As $p$ hybridization., Extended discussion. 6 pages, 4 figures. Topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals not only host quasiparticles analogous to the elementary fermionic particles in high-energy physics, but also have nontrivial band topology manifested by exotic Fermi arcs on the surface. Recent advances suggest new types of topological semimetals, in which spatial symmetries protect gapless electronic excitations without high-energy analogy. Here we observe triply-degenerate nodal points (TPs) near the Fermi level of WC, in which the low-energy quasiparticles are described as three-component fermions distinct from Dirac and Weyl fermions. We further observe the surface states whose constant energy contours are pairs of Fermi arcs connecting the surface projection of the TPs, proving the nontrivial topology of the newly identified semimetal state., Comment: 4 figures

Condensed matter systems can host quasiparticle excitations that are analogues to elementary particles such as Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac fermions. Recent advances in band theory have expanded the classification of fermions in crystals, and revealed crystal symmetry-protected electron excitations that have no high-energy counterparts. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate the existence of a triply degenerate point in the electronic structure of MoP crystal, where the quasiparticle excitations are beyond the Majorana-Weyl-Dirac classification. Furthermore, we observe pairs of Weyl points in the bulk electronic structure coexisting with the 'new fermions', thus introducing a platform for studying the interplay between different types of fermions., 12 pages, 4 figures

We report single-crystal x-ray-diffraction measurements on Na2Ti2Pn2O (Pn = As,Sb) which reveal a charge superstructure that appears below the density wave transitions previously observed in bulk data. From symmetry-constrained structure refinements we establish that the associated distortion mode can be described by two propagation vectors q1 = (1/2,0,l) and q2 = (0,1/2,l) with l = 0 (Sb) or l = 1/2 (As) and primarily involves in-plane displacements of the Ti atoms perpendicular to the Ti-O bonds.We also present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, which show band folding and backbending consistent with a density wave with the samewave-vectors q1 and q2 associated with Fermi-surface nesting, and muon-spin relaxation data, which show no indication of spin density wave order. The results provide direct evidence for phonon-assisted charge density wave order in Na2Ti2Pn2O and fully characterize a proximate ordered phase that could compete with superconductivity in doped BaTi2Sb2O.

Production of B-c(+) mesons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is studied with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb(-1) recorded by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production cross sections times branching fractions between the B_c. J/psi pi(+) and B+ -> J/psi K+ decays is measured as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity in the regions 0 < p(T) < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The ratio in this kinematic range is measured to be (0.683 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.009)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which are isostructural to the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ of the 122 family of ferropnictide superconductors. We show the existence of a strongly $k_z$-dependent band gap with a minimum at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with their semiconducting properties. Despite the half-filling of the electronic 3$d$ shell, we show that the band structure in these materials is almost not renormalized from the Kohn-Sham bands of density functional theory. Our photon energy dependent study provides evidence for Mn-pnictide hybridization, which may play a role in tuning the electronic correlations in these compounds., 7 pages, 4 figures. Two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) with a large bulk band-gap are promising for experimental studies of the quantum spin Hall effect and for spintronic device applications. Despite considerable theoretical efforts in predicting large-gap 2D TI candidates, only few of them have been experimentally verified. Here, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal that the top monolayer of ZrTe5 crystals hosts a large band gap of ~100 meV on the surface and a finite constant density-of-states within the gap at the step edge. Our first-principles calculations confirm the topologically nontrivial nature of the edge states. We performed a Raman scattering study of Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O. We identified a symmetry breaking structural transition at around $T_s = 150$ K, which matches a large bump in the electrical resistivity. Several new peaks are detected below that transition. Combined with first-principles calculations, our polarization-dependent measurements suggest a charge instability driven lattice distortion along one of the Ti-O bonds that breaks the 4-fold symmetry and more than doubles the unit cell., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Topological insulators (TIs) host novel states of quantum matter, distinguished from trivial insulators by the presence of nontrivial conducting boundary states connecting the valence and conduction bulk bands. Up to date, all the TIs discovered experimentally rely on the presence of either time reversal or symmorphic mirror symmetry to protect massless Dirac-like boundary states. Very recently, it has been theoretically proposed that several materials are a new type of TIs protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry, where glide-mirror can protect novel exotic surface fermions with hourglass-shaped dispersion. However, an experimental confirmation of such new nonsymmorphic TI (NSTI) is still missing. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal that such hourglass topology exists on the (010) surface of crystalline KHgSb while the (001) surface has no boundary state, which is fully consistent with first-principles calculations. We thus experimentally demonstrate that KHgSb is a NSTI hosting hourglass fermions. It is well known that superconductivity in Fe-based materials is favoured under tetragonal symmetry, whereas competing orders such as spin-density-wave (SDW) and nematic orders emerge or are reinforced upon breaking the fourfold (C4) symmetry. Accordingly, suppression of orthorhombicity below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is found in underdoped compounds. Epitaxial film growth on selected substrates allows the design of crystal specific lattice distortions. Here we show that despite the breakdown of the C4 symmetry induced by a 5% difference in the lattice parameters, monolayers of FeSe grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on the (110) surface of SrTiO3 (STO) substrates [FeSe/STO(110)] exhibit a large nearly isotropic superconducting (SC) gap of 16 meV closing around 60 K. Our results on this new interfacial material, similar to those obtained previously on FeSe/STO(001), contradict the common belief that the C4 symmetry is essential for reaching high Tc's in Fe-based superconductors.

The helix-loop-helix inhibitor of differentiation and DNA binding (Id1) is well known as an oncogene in various tumors. Although it has been reported that Id1 promotes several oncogenic processes, it is still unclear whether Id1 functions through epigenetic transcriptional regulation. In this study, we examined the effect of Id1 on polycomb group (PcG) proteins, which are crucial epigenetic gene silencers, and found that Id1 regulated the expression of Mel-18 and Bmi-1, both of which belong to polycomb repressive complex 1. We also confirmed that Id1 induced Mel-18 downregulation, which was mediated by the Akt pathway, and consequently upregulated the transcription of its target gene, c-Myc. Using a promoter-reporter, we demonstrated that Id1 regulated Bmi-1 transcription through c-Myc binding to its E-box in the promoter. Finally, we examined the activity of E3 ligase RING1b, whose catalytic activity is increased by binding with the RING finger protein Bmi-1, and found that Id1 overexpression enhanced RING1b E3 ligase activity leading to accumulation of H2A ubiquitination and ubiquitin/proteasome-mediated degradation of geminin. Taken together, our study provided a novel link between Id1 and PcG proteins and suggested that Id1 may contribute to tumor development through PcG-mediated epigenetic regulation.

Inhibitor of differentiation-1 (Id-1) has been accepted as a putative oncogene to promote oncogenic processes through inactivation of tumor suppressors and activation of growth promoting pathways. Here, we show that Id-1 activates the Akt pathway by inhibition of phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) transcription through downregulation of p53. Id-1 negatively regulated both p53 and PTEN at the transcriptional level. In promoter assay with serial deletion and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay, the binding of p53 to the PTEN promoter was reduced by Id-1, suggesting that Id-1 regulates PTEN transcription through its p53 modulation. This led to Akt phosphorylation at Ser473 and the activation of the Akt-mediated canonical Wnt signaling pathway. The glycogen synthase kinase-3beta phosphorylation at Ser9, stabilization and nuclear localization of beta-catenin, T-cell factor (TCF)/lymphoid enhancer factor transactivation activity and cyclin D1 expression were enhanced by Id-1. On the other hand, Akt-mediated p27(Kip1) phosphorylation at Thr157 and its cytosolic localization were also increased in Id-1 overexpressing MCF7 cells. In conclusion, our results disclose Id-1 as a novel PTEN inhibitor that could activate the Akt pathway and its downstream effectors, the Wnt/TCF pathway and p27(Kip1) phosphorylation and suggest that the oncogenic function of Id-1 may be partly attributed to its PTEN inhibition in human breast carcinogenesis.

A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chiral anomaly. To have the transport properties dominated by Weyl fermions, Weyl nodes need to locate nearly at the chemical potential and enclosed by pairs of individual Fermi surfaces with nonzero Fermi Chern numbers. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculation, here we show that TaP is a Weyl semimetal with only single type of Weyl fermions, topologically distinguished from TaAs where two types of Weyl fermions contribute to the low-energy physical properties. The simple Weyl fermions in TaP are not only of fundamental interests but also of great potential for future applications. While the Cu $3d$ bands in both materials are located around 3.5 eV below the Fermi level, the low-energy photoemission intensity mainly comes from As $4p$ states, suggesting a completely filled Cu $3d$ shell. The splitting of the As $3d$ core levels and the lack of pronounced three-dimensionality in the measured band structure of BaCu$_2$As$_2$ indicate a surface state likely induced by the cleavage of this material in the collapsed tetragonal phase, which is consistent with our observation of a Cu$^{+1}$ oxydation state. However, the observation of Cu states at similar energy in $\alpha$-BaCu$_2$Sb$_2$ without the pnictide-pnictide interlayer bonding characteristic of the collapsed tetragonal phase suggests that the short interlayer distance in BaCu$_2$As$_2$ follows from the stability of the Cu$^{+1}$ rather than the other way around. We report the temperature evolution of the detailed electronic band structure in FeSe single-crystals measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), including the degeneracy removal of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals at the $\Gamma$/Z and M points, and the orbital-selective hybridization between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependences of the splittings at the $\Gamma$/Z and M points are different, indicating that they are controlled by different order parameters. The splitting at the M point is closely related to the structural transition and is attributed to orbital ordering defined on Fe-Fe bonds with a $d$-wave form in the reciprocal space that breaks the rotational symmetry. In contrast, the band splitting at the $\Gamma$ points remains at temperature far above the structural transition. Using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we characterize superconducting TlNi$_2$Se$_2$ as a material with weak electronic Coulomb correlations leading to a bandwidth renormalization of 1.4. We identify a camelback-shaped band, whose energetic position strongly depends on the selenium height. While this feature is universal in transition metal pnictides, in TlNi$_2$Se$_2$ it lies in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level, giving rise to a pronounced van Hove singularity. The resulting heavy band mass resolves the apparent puzzle of a large normal-state specific heat coefficient (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 207001) in this weakly correlated compound., 5 pages, 4 figures
