At present, college students generally choose courses according to their own interests or understanding of the course, which has a certain subjectivity and blindness. In many cases, students know little about the courses before class, and only rely on the course name to guess the course content, so as to decide whether to take this course. However, the existing studies are mainly aiming at online learning resources which are heterogeneous, these methods cannot be effectively applied to the recommendation of university courses. This paper explores improve collaborative filtering for university application environments, provides a knowledge recommendation algorithm for university elective courses. First, we created individual models of the course and the students based on background information. Next, we use context-based recommendation and “Parent Class Filling” method to reduce the impact of Cold Start and Sparsity problem on the initial stage of the system. Then, recommendations are generated based on the course evaluation model and similarity matrix. We select several commonly used algorithms to achieve the recommendation, and the experimental results proved that the proposed algorithm is accurate and effective.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is involved in the pathological process of vascular dementia (VD). GJ-4 is extracted from Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis and has been reported to have protective roles in ischemia-related brain damage. However, the role of GJ-4 in ERS has not been elucidated. We established a VD rat model through bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (2-VO). The rats were intragastrically administrated with GJ-4 (10, 25, and 50[Formula: see text]mg/kg) and nimodipine (10[Formula: see text]mg/kg). Data from a Morris water maze test showed that GJ-4 could significantly alleviate learning and memory deficits in VD rats. Nissl and cleaved caspase-3 staining revealed that GJ-4 can inhibit apoptosis and thus exert a protective role in the brain of 2-VO rats. Western blot results suggested that GJ-4 significantly reduced ERS-related protein expression and inhibited apoptosis through suppression of the PERK/eIF2[Formula: see text]/ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway. For in vitro studies, the oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) SH-SY5Y model was employed. Western blot and Hoechst 33342/PI double staining were utilized to explore the effects of crocetin, the main active metabolite of GJ-4. Like GJ-4 in vivo, crocetin in vitro also decreased ERS-related protein expression and inhibited the activation of the PERK/eIF2[Formula: see text]/ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway. Thus, crocetin exerted similar protective roles on OGD challenged SH-SY5Y cells in vitro. In summary, GJ-4 and crocetin reduce the ERS in the brain of VD rats and SY5Y cells subjected to OGD and inhibit neuronal apoptosis through suppression of the PERK/eIF2[Formula: see text]/ATF4/CHOP pathway, suggesting that GJ-4 may be useful for the treatment of VD.

Centrality metrics are one of the most fundamental tools in social network analysis and network science, and various measures for evaluating node importance metrics have been devised. However, the crucial issue of testing the discriminating power of different centrality measures is still open. In this article, we propose to assess the discriminating power of node centrality measures by using the notion of automorphism and orbit: nodes in the same orbit have identical metric scores, while nodes in different orbits should have different centrality values. Under this assumption, we present a benchmark for the discriminating power of node centrality measures. Moreover, we propose an efficient approach to evaluate centrality measures in terms of the discriminating power, which is devoid of finding orbits. Extensive experiments on real and model networks are executed to compare seven commonly used node centrality metrics.

Understanding animal growth plays an important role in improving animal genetics and breeding. In order to explore the early growth and development law of Ashidan yak, the body weight (BW), wither height (WH), body oblique length (BL) and chest girth (CG) of 260 female Ashidan yaks were measured. These individuals grew under grazing conditions, and growth traits were measured at 6, 12, 18 and 30 months of age. Then the absolute growth and relative growth of Ashidan yak were calculated, and five nonlinear models (Logistic model, Gompertz model, Brody model, von Bertalanffy model and Richards model) were used to fit the growth curve of Ashidan yak. The fitting effect of the model was evaluated according to MSE, AIC and BIC. The results showed that the growth rate of Ashidan yak was the fastest from 12 to 18 months old, and the growth was slow or even stagnant from 6 to 12 months old. The AIC and BIC values of the Richards model were the lowest among the five models, with an AIC value of 4543.98 and a BIC value of 4563.19. The Richards model estimated body weight at 155.642 kg. In summary, the growth rate of female Ashidan yak changes with the seasons, growing faster in warm seasons and slower in cold seasons. Richards model is the best model to describe the growth curve of female Ashidan yak in five nonlinear models.

The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Iodine-125 (I-125) brachytherapy in a mouse model of non-small cell lung cancer, to further explore the efficacy and appropriate method of implantation of the I-125 radioactive seed. This study also aimed to determine the impact of brachytherapy on bone metabolism. A total of 18 mice were used to establish H1299 xenograft models, and were randomly assigned to three groups. These included non-radioactive seed implantation (Sham IM), fractionated I-125 seed implantation (Fractionated IM) and single I-125 seed implantation (Single IM) groups. Mice were euthanized after 28 days of implantation. HE staining, Ki67 immunohistochemistry, CD31 morphometric analysis and TUNEL immunofluorescence assays were respectively used to determine the histopathological changes, proliferation, micro-angiogenesis and apoptosis of tumors. In addition, bone volume and microstructure were evaluated using trabecular bone area (Tb.Ar), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N) and cortical thickness. Bone metabolic status was analyzed using histomorphometric staining of tartrate-resistant acid phosphate (TRAP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expression in the femur, and using an ELISA assay to determine the expression of C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX-1) and procollagen type 1 n-terminal propeptide (P1NP) in the serum. Moreover, reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting were carried out for the analysis of bone remodeling-related gene expression in the bone tissue. Results of the present study demonstrated that compared with the Sham IM group, both the I-125 seed implantation groups, including Fractionated IM and Single IM, demonstrated significant therapeutic effects in both tumor volume and weight. More specifically, the most significant therapeutic effects on tumor inhibition were observed in the Fractionated IM group. Results of Ki67 and CD31 immunohistochemical staining suggested a notable reduction in tumor cell proliferation and micro-angiogenesis, and results of the TUNEL assay demonstrated an increase in tumor cell apoptosis. Although the cortical bone appeared thinner and more fragile in both I-125 seed implantation groups, no notable adverse changes in the morphology of the cancellous bone were observed, and the index of Tb.Ar, Tb.Th and Tb.n was not significantly different among Sham IM and I-125 implantation groups. However, alterations in bone metabolism were characterized by a decrease in CTX-1 and P1NP expression, accompanied by an increase in TRAP activity and a decrease in ALP activity. Results of the present study also demonstrated the notable suppression of osteocalcin and runt-related transcription factor 2. I-125 seed implantation may be an effective and safe antitumor strategy. Moreover, the use of fractionated implantation patterns based on tumor shape exhibited improved therapeutic effect on tumor suppression when the total number of I-125 seeds was equivalent along with reduced complications associated with bone loss.

In this paper, the effects of a polarization-modulated quaternary AlInGaN quantum barrier on carrier capture capability and the overlap rate of wave functions in deep-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV-LEDs) are numerically investigated. By controlling the band bending degree by adjusting polarization intensity (ΔP) in the active region, the band bending is alleviated, and electrons and holes move from both sides of the quantum well to the center, which increases the overlap rate of wave functions and enhances the light output power of DUV-LEDs. Also, there is a limitation on improving the performance of DUV-LEDs by reducing the polarization intensity. This is because the reduced polarization intensity (ΔP) flattens the energy band, reduces the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) concentration at the quantum well/quantum barrier (QW/QB) interface, and decreases the effective barrier height. The lower effective barrier height reduces the capability of carrier confinement and carrier concentration in the active region, resulting in the imbalance between the wave function and the carrier concentration, which limits further enhancement of the performance of DUV-LEDs.

Developing degradable bio-plastics has been considered feasible to lessen marine plastic pollution. However, unanimity is still elusive regarding the actual degradability of bio-plastics such as polylactide (PLA) and poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). Thus, herein, we studied the degradability of fabrics made from PLA/PHB blends in marine seawater. The dry-mass percentage of the PLA/PHB fabrics decreased progressively from 100% to 85~90% after eight weeks of immersion. Two environmental aging parameters (UV irradiation and aerating) were also confirmed to accelerate the abiotic hydrolysis of the incubated fabrics. The variation in the molecular structure of the PLA/PHB polymers after the degradation process was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). However, the hydrolysis degradability of bulky PLA/PHB blends, which were used to produce such PLA/PHB fabrics, was negligible under identical conditions. There was no mass loss in these solid PLA/PHB plastics except for a decrease in their tensile strength. Finally, a deep learning artificial neural network model was proposed to model and predict the nonlinear abiotic hydrolysis behavior of PLA/PHB fabrics. The degradability of PLA/PHB fabrics in marine water under the synergistic destructive effects of seawater, UV, and dissolved oxygen provides a pathway for more sustainable textile fibers and apparel products.

Edge centrality has found wide applications in various aspects. Many edge centrality metrics have been proposed, but the crucial issue that how good the discriminating power of a metric is, with respect to other measures, is still open. In this paper, we address the question about the benchmark of the discriminating power of edge centrality metrics. We first use the automorphism concept to define equivalent edges, based on which we introduce a benchmark for the discriminating power of edge centrality measures and develop a fast approach to compare the discriminating power of different measures. According to the benchmark, for a desirable measure, equivalent edges have identical metric scores, while inequivalent edges possess different scores. However, we show that even in a toy graph, inequivalent edges cannot be discriminated by three existing edge centrality metrics. We then present a novel edge centrality metric called forest centrality (FC). Extensive experiments on real-world networks and model networks indicate that FC has better discriminating power than three existing edge centrality metrics.

Microglial activation-induced neuroinflammation is critical in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Activated microglia are regulated mainly by innate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) on their surface, of which macrophage receptor with collagenous structure (Marco) is a well-characterized scavenger receptor constitutively expressed on specific subsets of macrophages, including microglia. Increasing evidence has shown that Marco is involved in the pathogenesis of a range of inflammatory processes. However, research on the role of Marco in regulating neuroinflammation has reported conflicting results. In the present study, we examined the role Marco played in triggering neuroinflammation and its underlying mechanisms. The results demonstrated that silencing the Marco gene resulted in a significantly reduced neuroinflammatory response and vice versa. α-Syn stimulation in Marco overexpressing cells induced a pronounced inflammatory response, suggesting that Marco alone could trigger an inflammatory response. We also found that TLR2 significantly promoted Marco-mediated neuroinflammation, indicating TLR2 was an important co-receptor of Marco. Knocking down the TLR2 gene in microglia and mouse substantia nigra resulted in decreased expression of Marco. Subsequent mechanistic studies showed that deleting the SRCR domain of Marco resulted in disruption of the inflammatory response and the interaction between TLR2 and Marco. This suggested that TLR2 binds directly to the SRCR domain of Marco and regulates Marco-mediated neuroinflammation. In summary, this investigation revealed that TLR2 could potentiate Marco-mediated neuroinflammation by interacting with the SRCR domain of Marco, providing a new target for inhibiting neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases.

Although significant advancement has been made in the study of adipogenesis, knowledge about how chromatin accessibility regulates yak adipogenesis is lacking. We here described genome-wide dynamic chromatin accessibility in preadipocytes and adipocytes by using the assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq), and thus revealed the unique characteristics of open chromatin during yak adipocyte differentiation. The chromatin accessibility of preadipocytes and adipocytes exhibited a similar genomic distribution, displaying a preferential location within the intergenic region, intron, and promoter. The pathway enrichment analysis identified that genes with differential chromatin accessibility were involved in adipogenic metabolism regulation pathways, such as the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPAR) signaling pathway, wingless-type MMTV integration site (Wnt) signaling pathway, and extracellular matrix-receptor (ECM–receptor) interaction. Application of the organic fertilizers can improve soil properties and agricultural product quality, while the in-depth effect of organic fertilizer needs further exploration. In this study, the apple fruit (Malus pumila Mill.) quality, soil physicochemical characteristics, and microbial community under different fertilizers including control without fertilizer (CK), composted manure (CM), biogas slurry (BS), and chemical fertilizer (CF) were systematically investigated, and each treatment was repeated three times in completely random block plots with equal NPK content of fertilizer applied in each treatment. The CM treated apple fruit were observed with the best vertical diameter (78.72 ± 4.32 mm), transverse diameter (87.51 ± 1.3 mm), and color index (L* = 55.48 ± 5.48, b* = 18.96 ± 1.86). Meanwhile, the CM and BS treated apple fruit had higher flesh firmness than that of CK and CF treatment, implying that the organic fertilization can improve the storability and crispy taste apple fruit. Furthermore, the total sugars, essential amino acid, crude protein, total acids, and soluble solid contents of apple fruit were also significantly improved by using CM and BS fertilizer due to the resulting higher N, P, and organics content in soil. The application of organic fertilizer also dramatically enhanced the bacterial and fungi diversity, which may contribute to better soil respiration. The results obtained in this study reveals the insight effect of organic fertilizer on improvement of fruit quality and soil health and can supply technical assistance to organic cultivation of apple.

The gut microbiota plays an important role in regulating the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of many drugs. FLZ, a novel squamosamide derivative, has been shown to have neuroprotective effects on experimental Parkinson's disease (PD) models. FLZ is under phase Ⅰ clinical trial now, while the underlying mechanisms contributing to the absorption of FLZ are still not fully elucidated. Due to the main metabolite of FLZ was abundant in feces but rare in urine and bile of mice, we focused on the gut microbiota to address how FLZ was metabolized and absorbed. In vitro studies revealed that FLZ could be exclusively metabolized to its major metabolite M1 by the lanosterol 14 alpha-demethylase (CYP51) in the gut microbiota, but was almost not metabolized by any other metabolism-related organs, such as liver, kidney, and small intestine. M1 was quickly absorbed into the blood and then remethylated to FLZ by catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT). Notably, dysbacteriosis reduced the therapeutic efficacy of FLZ on the PD mouse model by inhibiting its absorption. The results show that the gut microbiota mediate the absorption of FLZ through a FLZ–M1–FLZ circulation. Copy number variation (CNV) is a structural variant with significant impact on genetic diversity. CNV has been widely used in breeding for growth traits, meat production or quality, and coat color. SRY-like box genes (SOXs) are a class of transcription factors that play a regulatory role in cell fate specification and differentiation. SOX5 and SOX8 belong to subgroups D and E of the SOXs, respectively. Previous studies have shown that SOX5 and SOX8 are essential in the development of bones. In this study, we explored the association between the growth traits and CNVs of SOX5 and SOX8 in 326 Ashidan yaks and detected mRNA expression levels in different tissues. Our results illustrated that CNVs of SOX5 and SOX8 were significantly associated with withers height at 18 months of age and chest girth at 30 months of age (p < 0.05). The CNV combination of SOX5 and SOX8 was significantly associated with withers height at 18 months of age (p < 0.01). SOX5 expression in the lung was significantly higher than in the heart, spleen, kidney, and muscle (p < 0.05). SOX8 expression in the lung was significantly higher than in the liver and muscle (p < 0.05). Our results provide evidence that the CNVs of SOX5 and SOX8 genes could be used as new markers for the selection of yak growth traits.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted many researchers’ attention with their remarkable potential despite the fact that the practical implementation requires further improvement in their electric performance. In this work, a novel graphene phase two-dimension material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), was employed for the development of a TENG material with enhanced features. An electrospun nanofibrous PA66 membrane doped with g-C3N4 was fabricated as a multifunctional TENG for harvesting different kinds of mechanical energy and detecting human motions. By utilizing the innovative 2D material in PA66 solution for electrospinning, the as-made TENG showed a two times enhancement in electrical performance as compared to the control device, and also had the advantages of lightweight, softness, high porosity, and rugged interface properties. The assembled TENG with 4 cm2 could light up 40 light-emitting diodes by gentle hand clapping and power electronic watches or calculators with charging capacitors. At a given impact force of 40 N and 3 Hz, the as-made TENG can generate an open-circuit voltage of 80 V, short current of ±3 µA, charge transfer of 50 nC, and a maximum power density of 45 mW/m2 at a load resistance of 500 MΩ. The UV light sensitivity of TENG was also improved via g-C3N4 doping, showing that charge transfer is very sensitive with a two times enhancement with dopant. For the demonstration of applications, the g-C3N4 doped TENG was fabricated into an energy flag to scavenge wind energy and sensor devices for detecting human motions.

Discrete and polymeric coordination complexes, namely [Cu2L4(ClO4)4]·2CH2Cl2·CH3OH (1), [Cu2L2(NO3)4(CH3OH)2] (2) and {[Cu2L4(NO3)4]}n (3), were obtained using bridged pyridine ligand 4-methyl-2,6-bis(pyridinyl-3-ethynyl)aniline (L) and Cu(II) salts in CH2Cl2/MeOH. The structure of the Cu2L4 cage or Cu2L2 macrocycle was generated depending on the selection of the anion (ClO4−/NO3−). The heterogeneous Fenton reaction experiments using H2O2 showed that discrete coordination complexes are good photocatalysts in which the Cu–N bond plays a major role in the photocatalytic degradation. The degradation mechanism could be described as a synergistic process of the Fenton reaction and high-valence copper ions using t-butanol as the hydroxyl radical scavenger. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) experiments showed that the photodegradation efficiency of the coordination complexes is higher than that of the polymeric Cu-MOFs.

7-Hydroxycoumarin is a privileged structure for anti-inflammatory drug development. In this study, several new 3-acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives were designed, synthesized and tested as anti-inflammatory agents. Interestingly, Mannich bases and Betti bases were separately obtained under acidic or neutral conditions. The regioselectivity of aminomethylation was studied based on the atomic electron density distribution by analysing the Voronoi deformation density (VDD) atomic charges, which reasonably explained the experimental outcome. Detection of nitric oxide (NO) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) release revealed that Mannich bases displayed stronger anti-inflammatory activity than the corresponding Betti bases.

Traditional white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (blue chip + YAG:Ce3+ yellow phosphor) have the limitation of red deficiency, which limits their application in the illumination field. The single cation/anion substitution or co-doping of activators can increase the red component; however, the large energy loss is attributed to the ultra-long Stokes shift and energy transfer. This work attempts to utilize the short-distance Stokes shift and a small amount of energy transfer to increase the red component in two steps. First, based on a large number of previous research results, the Mg2Y2Al2Si2O12:Ce3+ phosphor is selected. Second, additional enhancement of the red component in the emission spectrum was achieved by ion co-doping Mn2+ into Mg2Y2Al2Si2O12:Ce3+. The emission peaks for samples Mg2Y2Al2Si2O12:Ce3+,Mn2+ shift from 600 to 635 nm with increase in the concentration of Mn2+, and the emission spectra intensity of Mg1.97Y1.93Al2Si2O12:0.07 Ce3+,0.03 Mn2+ anomalously increased by ∼37%, which was attributed to the increase in the distance between Ce3+ ions because of the doping of Mn2+ ions, and reduction in the concentration of defects in the crystal, resulting in the energy loss decreases of Ce3+. The emission peak of Mg1.97Y1.93Al2Si2O12:0.07 Ce3+,0.03 Mn2+ shifts to 618 nm and the quantum efficiency was as high as 83.07%. Furthermore, this sample has high thermal stability and the emission intensity was still 80.14% at 120 °C. As such, it has great potential in the application of white LEDs.

The growth hormone receptor (GHR) is a member of the cytokine/hematopoietic factor receptor superfamily, which plays an important role in the growth and development, immunity, and metabolism of animals. This study identified a 246 bp deletion variant in the intronic region of the GHR gene, and three genotypes, including type II, type ID, and type DD, were observed. Genotype analysis of structural variation (SV) was performed on 585 individuals from 14 yak breeds, and it was found that 246 bp deletion was present in each breed. The II genotype was dominant in all yak breeds except for SB yak. The association analysis of gene polymorphisms and growth traits in the ASD yak population showed that the 246 bp SV was significantly associated with body length at 6 months (p < 0.05). GHR messenger RNA (mRNA) was expressed in all the tested tissues, with significantly higher levels in the liver, muscle, and fat than in other organs. The results of transcription activity showed that the luciferase activity of the pGL4.10-DD vector was significantly higher than that of the pGL4.10-II vector (p < 0.05). Additionally, the transcription-factor binding prediction results showed that the SV in the runt-related transcription factor 1 (Runx1) transcription-factor binding site may affect the transcriptional activity of the GHR gene, regulating yak growth and development. This study showed that the novel SV of the GHR gene could be used as a candidate molecular marker for the selection of the early growth trait in ASD yak.

The function or performance of a network is strongly dependent on its robustness, quantifying the ability of the network to continue functioning under perturbations. While a wide variety of robustness metrics have been proposed, they have their respective limitations. In this paper, we propose to use the forest index as a measure of network robustness, which overcomes the deficiencies of existing metrics. Using such a measure as an optimization criterion, we propose and study the problem of breaking down a network by attacking some key edges. We show that the objective function of the problem is monotonic but not submodular, which impose more challenging on the problem. We thus resort to greedy algorithms extended for non-submodular functions by iteratively deleting the most promising edges. We first propose a simple greedy algorithm with a proved bound for the approximation ratio and cubic-time complexity. To confront the computation challenge for large networks, we further propose an improved nearly-linear time greedy algorithm, which significantly speeds up the process for edge selection but sacrifices little accuracy. Extensive experimental results for a large set of real-world networks verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms, demonstrating that our algorithms outperform several baseline schemes., 13 pages

Bio-polymers/bio-plastics have been proposed for the application of apparel products, yet their degradability, fate, durability and related environmental parameters are still elusive and need further exploration. Herein, we report the degradation behavior of poly(lactide acid)/poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PLA/PHB) fabrics, made from PLA/PHB multi-filament yarns, in subtropics marine seawater. The degradation experiments were performed under various parallel conditions including static seawater, aerobic seawater in dark box, aerobic seawater under sunlight, static seawater under ultra-violet light and aerobic seawater under ultra-violet light. Continuous mass loss of PLA/PHB fabrics as the immersion time in the seawater increased was confirmed. The hydrolysis rate of PLA/PHB fabrics accelerated in the presence of UV light and dissolved oxygen in the seawater. Moreover, the tensile strength of the PLA/PHB yarns dropped rapidly by 38.54-68.70% in spite of the mass loss percentage being from 9.57% to 14.48% after 2 weeks' immersion. All the PLA/PHB fabrics after two weeks' immersion exhibited similar ATR-IR spectra. Therefore, the degradability of PLA/PHB fabrics, in the marine surface water under the synergistic destructive effect of seawater, UV and dissolved oxygen, provides a pathway for more sustainable textile fibers and apparel products.

Detection of lead(II) (Pb2+) ions in water is important for the protection of human health and environment. The growing demand for onsite detection still faces challenges for sensitive and easy-to-use methods. In this work, a novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on GR-5 DNAzyme and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. Thiolated DNAzyme was immobilized on the gold surface of the sensor chip followed by anchoring the substrate-functionalized AuNPs through the DNAzyme-substrate hybridization. The coupling between the localized surface plasmon (LSP) of AuNPs and the surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) on the gold sensor surface was used to improve the sensitivity. The substrate cleavage in the presence of Pb2+ ions was catalyzed by DNAzyme, leading to the removal of AuNPs and the diminished LSP-SPP coupling. The optimal detection limit was 80 pM for the sensor fabricated with 1 μM DNAzyme, corresponding to two or three orders of magnitude lower than the toxicity levels of Pb2+ in drinking water defined by WHO and USEPA. By tuning the surface coverage of DNAzyme, the sensitivity and dynamic range could be controlled. This sensor also featured high selectivity to Pb2+ ions and simple detection procedure. Successful detection of Pb2+ ions in groundwater indicates that this method has the prospect in the onsite detection of Pb2+ ions in water. Given the variety of AuNPs and metal-specific DNAzymes, this detection strategy would lead to the development of more sensitive and versatile heavy metal sensors.

Traditional powder metallurgy was employed to prepare alumina–zirconia (Al2O3–ZrO2) and alumina–zirconia–aluminium (Al2O3–ZrO2–Al) ceramics. It was found that as the sintering temperature increases, the flexural strength of both ceramics increases first and then decreases. The maximum flexural strength of Al2O3–ZrO2 appears to be 430.7 MPa when sintered at 1650°C, and Al2O3–ZrO2–Al appears to be 448.8 MPa when sintered at 1600°C. As the sintering temperature increases, the grain size of each phase grows up, the porosity increases, the content of intragranular phase and monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2) increases. The addition of Al powder improves the dispersion of ZrO2, reduces the porosity of zirconia toughened alumina ceramics, and improves the bending strength. Al powder increases the content of the intragranular ZrO2, restrains the t–m phase transformation, results in the decreases of the relative amount of m-ZrO2 in ZrO2 (Xm ). Adding Al powder during ball milling is a simple method to increase the content of intragranular ZrO2 in Al2O3–ZrO2 ceramics.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic endocrine disease result from absolute or relative insulin secretion deficiency, insulin resistance, or both, and has become a major and growing public healthy menace worldwide. Currently, clinical antidiabetic drugs still have some limitations in efficacy and safety such as gastrointestinal side effects, hypoglycemia, or weight gain. Rosmarinus officinalis is an aromatic evergreen shrub used as a food additive and medicine, which has been extensively used to treat hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetic wounds. A great deal of pharmacological research showed that rosemary extract and its phenolic constituents, especially carnosic acid, rosmarinic acid, and carnosol, could significantly improve diabetes mellitus by regulating glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, anti-inflammation, and anti-oxidation, exhibiting extremely high research value. Therefore, this review summarizes the pharmacological effects and underlying mechanisms of rosemary extract and its primary phenolic constituents on diabetes and relative complications both in vitro and in vivo studies from 2000 to 2020, to provide some scientific evidence and research ideas for its clinical application.

Fibrotic disease can disrupt the normally transparent ocular tissues resulting in irreversible loss of vision. A common feature in fibrotic eye disease is the transdifferentiation of cells into myofibroblasts that can occur through a process known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Transforming growth factor β has a central role in fibrogenesis by modulating the fibroblast function, inducing myofibroblast transdifferentiation and promoting extracellular matrix accumulation. It has been implicated in numerous fibrotic eye diseases. This article aims to introduce the new progression on TGFβ and fibrotic ocular diseases and its clinical significance for providing the reference in clinical practices.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has neurotrophic activity for the survival of dopaminergic neurons, which is under active investigation for Parkinson's disease (PD) therapy. FLZ is a potential new drug for PD treatment. However, it is unclear whether neurotrophic activity contributes to the neuroprotective effects of FLZ. Here we found that FLZ markedly improved the function of dopaminergic neurons in primary mesencephalic neuron/glia cultures. Further investigation demonstrated that astroglia were required for FLZ to function as a neurotrophic regulator, as FLZ failed to show neurotrophic effects in the absence of astroglia. We clarified that GDNF was responsible for the neurotrophic effects of FLZ since FLZ selectively stimulated GDNF production, which was confirmed by the finding that the neurotrophic effect of FLZ was attenuated by GDNF-neutralizing antibody. Mechanistic study demonstrated that GDNF induction by FLZ was CREB-dependent and that PI3K/Akt was the main pathway regulating CREB activity, which was confirmed by in vivo studies. We also validated that the induction of GDNF by FLZ contributed to PD treatment in vivo. In conclusion, the present data provided evidence that FLZ had robust neurotrophic effects on dopaminergic neurons through sustained induction of GDNF in astroglia by activating the PI3K/Akt/CREB pathway.

Accumulated evidence shows that sperm-associated antigen 6 (SPAG6) gene has multiple biological functions. It maintains the normal function of a variety of cells including ciliary/flagellar biogenesis and polarization, neurogenesis, and neuronal migration. Moreover, SPAG6 is found to be critically involved in auditory transduction and the fibroblast life cycle. Furthermore, SPAG6 plays an essential role in immuno-regulation. Notably, SPAG6 has been demonstrated to participate in the occurrence and progression of a variety of human cancers. New evidence shows that SPAG6 gene regulates tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis. Therefore, in this review, we describe the physiological function and mechanism of SPAG6 in human normal cells and cancer cells. We also highlight that SPAG6 gene may be an effective biomarker for the diagnosis of human cancer. Combinatorial problems are a fundamental research subject of theoretical computer science, and for a general graph many combinatorial problems are NP-hard and even #P-complete. Thus, it is interesting to seek or design special graphs for which these difficult combinatorial problems can be exactly solved. In this paper, we study some combinatorial problems for the Farey graphs, which are translated from Farey sequences and have received considerable attention from the scientific community. We determine exactly the domination number, the independence number, and the matching number. Moreover, we derive exact or recursive solutions to the number of minimum dominating sets, the number of dominating sets, the number of maximum independent sets, the number of independent sets, the number of maximum matchings, as well as the number of matchings. Finally, we obtain explicit expressions for the number of acyclic orientations and the number of root-connected acyclic orientations. Since the considered combinatorial problems have found wide applications in diverse fields, such as network science and graph data miming, this work is helpful for deepening our understanding of the applications for these combinatorial problems.

The role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection statuses in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has not been completely understood. To evaluate the prevalence of T2DM in patients with different HCV infection statuses. We conducted a systematic study on T2DM risk in five types of individuals with different HCV infection statuses: non-HCV controls, HCV-cleared patients, chronic HCV patients without cirrhosis, patients with HCV cirrhosis and patients with decompensated HCV cirrhosis. Studies published from 2010 to 2019 were selected. Both pairwise and network meta-analyses were employed to compare the T2DM risk among patients with different HCV infection statuses. The pairwise meta-analysis showed that non-HCV (OR = 0.60, 95% CI [0.47–0.78]) had a lower risk of T2DM compared with CHC, while cirrhosis had a significant higher risk (OR = 1.90, 95% CI [1.60–2.26]). Network meta-analysis further demonstrated patients with HCV infection were at a significantly higher risk of T2DM than those without HCV infection or with HCV clearance, while decompensated cirrhosis had a significant higher T2DM risk than non-HCV (OR = 3.84, 95% CI [2.01–7.34]), patients with HCV clearance (OR = 3.17, 95% CI [1.49–6.73]), and CHC patients (OR = 2.21, 95% CI [1.24–3.94]). HCV infection is a significant risk factor for developing T2DM. CHC, cirrhosis, and decompensated cirrhosis contribute to an increasingly greater risk of T2DM, but HCV clearance spontaneously or through clinical treatment may immediately reduce the risk of the onset and development of T2DM.
