1. Strategic selection tool for thermoplastic materials in a renewable circular economy: Identifying future circular polymers

Abstract: To progress towards a renewable circular economy for thermoplastic materials it is imperative to decouple from fossil feedstocks, to maximise looping strategies and to manufacture occasionally littered articles from readily biodegradable materials. This transition is complex due to the combination of stringent technical specifications that are required for ordinary plastic products and the demands that all end-of-life scenarios foist on these products. The presented strategic material selection tool for fast moving consumer goods in a renewable circular economy prioritises their suitability for the expected end-of-life fates and the contrived technical performance. This framework is tested for 17 common consumer articles and 21 biobased plastics. The strategic selection tool shows that consumer articles that are made from foamed and fibrous plastics, such as matrasses and textiles, can potentially be produced from biobased alternatives, such as biobased poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). On the other hand, the tool also reveals that there are currently no adequate alternatives in barrier (food) packages and in elastomeric products such as tyres, soles of footwear and gloves. Biobased PET is a good polymer for beverage bottles provided that the leakage to the natural environment is minimised with an effective collection, reuse and recycling system. Although there are no viable single-biobased-polymeric alternatives for flexible packages to pack for instance dried foods, solutions could be developed in the form of multi-layered films of various biobased and biodegradable materials. But it would also imply that a dedicated new recycling technology needs to be developed for such multilayer films. The presented tool demonstrates that the technology is ready to start the transition towards a renewable circular economy for consumer articles such as matrasses, cushions, beverage bottles. Simultaneously, new biobased polymeric solutions need to be developed for multiple other applications such as tyres, footwear, gloves and flexible barrier packaging.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have not identified replicable genetic risk loci for stress or urgency urinary incontinence. METHODS: We carried out a discovery stage case control GWAS in three independent discovery cohorts of European women (n=8,979) for stress incontinence, urgency incontinence, and any incontinence phenotypes. We conducted replication in six additional studies of European ancestry (n=4,069). We collected bladder biopsies from women with incontinence to further investigate bladder expression of implicated genes and pathways (n=50) and used symptom questionnaires for phenotyping. We conducted meta-analyses using inverse variance fixed effects models in METAL, and whole transcriptome analyses using Affymetrix arrays, with replication with TaqMan PCR. Abstract: The health effects of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FAs) have been controversial. A de novo pooled analysis was conducted with 17 prospective cohort studies examining the associations between blood n-3 FAs levels and risk for all-cause mortality. Over a median of 15 years of follow-up, 15,720 deaths occurred among 42,466 individuals. After adjustment for relevant risk factors, risk for death from all causes was significantly lower (by 15-18%) in the highest vs the lowest quintile for circulating long chain (20-22 carbon) n-3 FAs, but not for the 18-carbon n-3 FA. Abstract: Autosomal genetic analyses of blood lipids have yielded key insights for coronary heart disease (CHD). However, X chromosome genetic variation is understudied for blood lipids in large sample sizes. We now analyze genetic and blood lipid data in a high-coverage whole X chromosome sequencing study of 65,322 multi-ancestry participants and perform replication among 456,893 European participants. Common alleles on chromosome Xq23 are strongly associated with reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (min P = 8.5 × 10−72), with similar effects for males and females. Chromosome Xq23 lipid-lowering alleles are associated with reduced odds for CHD among 42,545 cases and 591,247 controls (P = 1.7 × 10−4), and reduced odds for diabetes mellitus type 2 among 54,095 cases and 573,885 controls (P = 1.4 × 10−5). Although we observe an association with increased BMI, waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI is reduced, bioimpedance analyses indicate increased gluteofemoral fat, and abdominal MRI analyses indicate reduced visceral adiposity. Co-localization analyses strongly correlate increased CHRDL1 gene expression, particularly in adipose tissue, with reduced concentrations of blood lipids.

De belangrijkste conclusie is dat met name de verhouding supermarkt en overige winkels daarbij een belangrijke rol speelt. De inzichten zijn relevant voor beleggers, ontwikkelaars en lokale overheden.

Abstract: In de periode 2012 - 2016 is het aantal winkelfaillissementen fors toegenomen. V&D, Macintosh en Perry Sport zijn hiervan sprekende voorbeelden. Dit artikel gaat in op de vraag wat het effect van een faillissement is op de markthuur van een specifieke winkelunit. Op basis van een multidimensionale paneldataset wordt door de Difference in Differences regressiemethode geconcludeerd dat er gemiddeld genomen geen robuust effect is gevonden dat faillissementen de markthuur van een specifieke winkelunit beïnvloeden. Significant is dat de markthuur in panden waar een faillissement heeft plaatsgevonden, hoger is dan in panden zonder faillissement. De onderzoeksresultaten zijn in het bijzonder relevant voor taxateurs en winkelbeleggers.

Abstract: Carotid artery intima media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are measures of subclinical atherosclerosis associated with ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD). Here, we undertake meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 71,128 individuals for cIMT, and 48,434 individuals for carotid plaque traits. We identify eight novel susceptibility loci for cIMT, one independent association at the previously-identified PINX1 locus, and one novel locus for carotid plaque. Colocalization analysis with nearby vascular expression quantitative loci (cis-eQTLs) derived from arterial wall and metabolic tissues obtained from patients with CHD identifies candidate genes at two potentially additional loci, ADAMTS9 and LOXL4. LD score regression reveals significant genetic correlations between cIMT and plaque traits, and both cIMT and plaque with CHD, any stroke subtype and ischemic stroke. Our study provides insights into genes and tissue-specific regulatory mechanisms linking atherosclerosis both to its functional genomic origins and its clinical consequences in humans.

Abstract: BackgroundPrevalence rates of challenging behaviour are high in children and adults with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). Moreover, many of these behaviours are observed daily. Direct support staff report that most challenging behaviour identified has little impact on the person with PIMD and attribute challenging behaviour in children and adults with PIMD mainly to a biomedical model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether an intervention (psycho-education) had any effect on direct support staff's assessment of challenging behaviour in terms of its severity and their biomedical causal explanations (attributions) for this behaviour. MethodA stepped wedge study design was used to evaluate the effects of a psycho-education intervention on the perceived severity and the attributions offered for challenging behaviour of people with PIMD by 198 direct support staff. We used questionnaires assessing the perceived severity of challenging behaviour and staff views of its causes. Data on the dependent variables were collected at four 1-month intervals. ResultsThe intervention was found to have an effect on the perceived severity of challenging behaviour identified in people with PIMD in the sense that staff generally scored challenging behaviour as more severe in its consequences after the intervention. However, this effect was very small. No significant effects were found in terms of reduction in the biomedical scale scores. ConclusionNo evidence for the effectiveness of a psycho-educational approach on the assessment of challenging behaviour in terms of severity and the biomedical attributions for behaviour was found. More research is required to explore further the effects of more elaborate training using methods to enable direct support staff to reflect on the behaviour of people with PIMD and on their own behaviour.

12. Risk factors associated with challenging behaviour in people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Several factors that correlate with the onset or continuation of challenging behaviour are mentioned in research. These are factors related to persons with ID, but also to direct support professionals and the context. Although many of these factors seem to affect the onset or continuation of challenging behaviour in people with ID in general, results are often inconclusive and have little focus on people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). The present study aimed to assess the extent to which known factors related to challenging behaviour are also applicable to a group of 198 people with PIMD. METHOD: To determine which factors were associated with challenging behaviour, univariate analyses on associations between known risk factors and challenging behaviour were conducted. The associated factors were then subject to a regression analysis to determine the extent to which they explain the prevalence of challenging behaviour and can thus be seen as factors associated with challenging behaviour. RESULTS: The results show that, in particular, factors concerning the personal characteristics of people with PIMD, such as sleeping problems and auditory problems, were related to the variance in mean frequency of challenging behaviour. Only one factor related to the direct support professionals was found: when these professionals had been offered training on the subject of challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities in general, they identified significantly more withdrawn behaviour. We found no contextual factors related to challenging behaviour. CONCLUSION: These findings are generally consistent with findings reported in other studies, especially concerning the personal characteristics of people with PIMD. Further research should focus on the effects of providing safe auditory environments and appropriate sleep schedules for people with PIMD on the occurrence of challenging behaviour.

16. A novel hybrid process of reverse electrodialysis and reverse osmosis for low energy seawater desalination and brine management

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel concept for a hybrid desalination system that combines reverse electrodialysis (RED) and reverse osmosis (RO) processes. In this hybrid process the RED unit harvests the energy in the form of electricity from the salinity gradient between a highly concentrated solution (e.g., seawater or concentrated brine) and a low salinity solution (e.g., biologically treated secondary effluent or impaired water). The RED-treated high salinity solution has a lower salt concentration and serves as the feed solution for the RO unit to reduce the pump work. The concentrated RO brine provides the RED unit a better high salinity source for the energy recovery compared to seawater. In addition, the concentration of the discharged brine can be controlled by the RED unit for improving the water recovery and minimizing the impact on the environment. Different configurations of the hybrid RED-RO processes are presented for a comparative study on the basis of mathematical modeling. Specifically, various operating conditions for the RED unit are investigated for better adaptation to the hybrid system. The variations of the total specific energy consumption and the discharge brine concentration for various hybrid modes are simulated to verify the conceptual designs. The modeling results indicate that the RED-RO hybrid processes could substantially reduce the specific energy consumption and provide a better control of the discharge brine concentration in comparison to conventional seawater desalination RO processes.

Abstract: The AMI Meeting Corpus is a multi-modal data set consisting of 100 hours of meeting recordings. It is being created in the context of a project that is developing meeting browsing technology and will eventually be released publicly. Some of the meetings it contains are naturally occurring, and some are elicited, particularly using a scenario in which the participants play different roles in a design team, taking a design project from kick-o' to completion over the course of a day. The corpus is being recorded using a wide range of devices including close-talking and far-field microphones, individual and room-view video cameras, projection, a whiteboard, and individual pens, all of which produce output signals that are synchronized with each other. It is also being hand-annotated for many different phenomena, including orthographic transcription, discourse properties such as named entities and dialogue acts, summaries, emotions, and some head and hand gestures. We describe the data set, including the rationale behind using elicited material, and explain how the material is being recorded, transcribed and annotated.

Abstract: Left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. The known determinants of left ventricular hypertrophy only partially explain its variability. The purpose of this study was to estimate heritability of left ventricular mass. The study sample included adults in the original Framingham Heart Study and the Framingham Offspring Study who were not receiving antihypertensive medications and who were free of coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, renal insufficiency, valvular heart disease, and severe left ventricular hypertrophy. Abstract: Emergency management (EM), the decision making involved in directing the relief operation after a disaster or otherwise catastrophic accident is an issue of great public and private concern because of the high stakes involved. It is important to consider what can be done to optimize training and support of EM teams, both in terms of the structure of training and support, and the use of simulation technology. In terms of technology, there have been developments that would be worthwhile applying to the domain of EM, such as automated instructor and observer aids, and intelligent automated cognitive performance diagnosis. CrisisKit is introduced as an example of a simulated environment in which training and support are combined. We are currently exploring how the CrisisKit concept could be augmented with intelligent, synthetic, agents acting as team members and intelligent controllers, and which, on the basis of performance measurement, are able to flexibly adapt the scenarios to the current level of knowledge and skill of the team.

Abstract: Metadata only record This paper discusses a study attempting to quantify potential soil C sequestration rates for different crops in response to decreasing tillage intensity or enhancing rotation complexity, and to estimate the duration of time over which sequestration may occur. The authors found that switching from conventional tillage to no-till can sequester increasing amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. Sequestration rates were found to peak in 5 to 10 years. The results of this study can be used in spatial modeling analyses to predict global sequestration potentials.

Abstract: In a fetus of 42 weeks' gestation electronic monitoring demonstrated a heart rate of 120 beats/min that lacked the normal variability. Auscultation with a fetoscope revealed the true rate to be 240 beats/min. When used in the external Doppler mode the fetal monitor had a 250-ms refractory period after the recognition of a fetal cardiac event. This precluded recognition of the next beat and produced the artefactual halving of the heart rate. With the increasing reliance upon electronic fetal monitoring, those practising obstetrics should be aware of the possibility of artefacts and ensure that they can recognize truly representative information about the fetus.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To determine the additional value of mediastinoscopy/tomy in the pre-surgical staging of non-small-cell lung carcinoma. DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: Patients who underwent mediastinoscopy/tomy for staging of non-small-cell lung carcinoma from 1994 to 2000 at Groningen University Hospital, the Netherlands, were evaluated. Starting with data on history, physical examination, data imaging tests and bronchoscopy, the additional value of the mediastinoscopy was then evaluated using a logistic regression model. Not only was the additional value of a limited, routinely performed mediastinoscopy (whereby only lymph nodes at the site of the primary tumour are biopsied) examined, but also that of the comprehensive standard mediastinoscopy (conforming to the minimal requirements regarding number and localization of biopsied lymph nodes, i.e. lymph-node stations 2L, 2R, 4R, 4L, 7). The outcome against which all the test results were measured was the result of final pathological tumour staging. RESULTS: A total of 176 evaluable patients were included. History, physical examination and bronchoscopy played a small but significant role in predicting the percentage of patients in which resection was possible, 58% (95% CI: 50-67). Age was an important predictor. The subsequent addition of the limited and routinely performed mediastinoscopy to the model increased the correct prediction to 69% (95% CI: 61-77), while adding the standard mediastinoscopy to the model showed a significantly higher correct prediction of 81% (95% CI: 75-88). CONCLUSION: The standard mediastinoscopy involving a minimum of five different lymph node stations was of greater diagnostic value than limited mediastinoscopy.

Abstract: The seasonal-cycle amplitude (SCA) of the atmosphere–ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange rate is a useful metric of the responsiveness of the terrestrial biosphere to environmental variations. It is unclear, however, what underlying mechanisms are responsible for the observed increasing trend of SCA in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Using output data from the Multi-scale Terrestrial Model Intercomparison Project (MsTMIP), we investigated how well the SCA of atmosphere–ecosystem CO2 exchange was simulated with 15 contemporary terrestrial ecosystem models during the period 1901–2010. Also, we made attempt to evaluate the contributions of potential mechanisms such as atmospheric CO2, climate, land-use, and nitrogen deposition, through factorial experiments using different combinations of forcing data. Under contemporary conditions, the simulated global-scale SCA of the cumulative net ecosystem carbon flux of most models was comparable in magnitude with the SCA of atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Results from factorial simulation experiments showed that elevated atmospheric CO2 exerted a strong influence on the seasonality amplification. When the model considered not only climate change but also land-use and atmospheric CO2 changes, the majority of the models showed amplification trends of the SCAs of photosynthesis, respiration, and net ecosystem production (+0.19 % to +0.50 % yr−1). In the case of land-use change, it was difficult to separate the contribution of agricultural management to SCA because of inadequacies in both the data and models. The simulated amplification of SCA was approximately consistent with the observational evidence of the SCA in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Large inter-model differences remained, however, in the simulated global tendencies and spatial patterns of CO2 exchanges. Further studies are required to identify a consistent explanation for the simulated and observed amplification trends, including their underlying mechanisms. Abstract: New Equations for Estimating GFR without Race Equations for estimating GFR with serum creatinine overestimate measured GFR in Blacks. The authors report new equations, without race as an inflation factor, using cystatin C and creatinine that reduced errors in estimation between Black participants and non-Black participants.Background Current equations for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) that use serum creatinine or cystatin C incorporate age, sex, and race to estimate measured GFR. However, race in eGFR equations is a social and not a biologic construct. Methods We developed new eGFR equations without race using data from two development data sets: 10 studies (8254 participants, 31.5% Black) for serum creatinine and 13 studies (5352 participants, 39.7% Black) for both serum creatinine and cystatin C. In a validation data set of 12 studies (4050 participants, 14.3% Black), we compared the accuracy of new eGFR equations to measured GFR. We projected the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and GFR stages in a sample of U.S. adults, using current and new equations. Results In the validation data set, the current creatinine equation that uses age, sex, and race overestimated measured GFR in Blacks (median, 3.7 ml per minute per 1.73 m(2) of body-surface area; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8 to 5.4) and to a lesser degree in non-Blacks (median, 0.5 ml per minute per 1.73 m(2); 95% CI, 0.0 to 0.9). When the adjustment for Black race was omitted from the current eGFR equation, measured GFR in Blacks was underestimated (median, 7.1 ml per minute per 1.73 m(2); 95% CI, 5.9 to 8.8). A new equation using age and sex and omitting race underestimated measured GFR in Blacks (median, 3.6 ml per minute per 1.73 m(2); 95% CI, 1.8 to 5.5) and overestimated measured GFR in non-Blacks (median, 3.9 ml per minute per 1.73 m(2); 95% CI, 3.4 to 4.4). For all equations, 85% or more of the eGFRs for Blacks and non-Blacks were within 30% of measured GFR. New creatinine-cystatin C equations without race were more accurate than new creatinine equations, with smaller differences between race groups. As compared with the current creatinine equation, the new creatinine equations, but not the new creatinine-cystatin C equations, increased population estimates of CKD prevalence among Blacks and yielded similar or lower prevalence among non-Blacks. Conclusions New eGFR equations that incorporate creatinine and cystatin C but omit race are more accurate and led to smaller differences between Black participants and non-Black participants than new equations without race with either creatinine or cystatin C alone. Abstract: The QT interval, an electrocardiographic measure reflecting myocardial repolarization, is a heritable trait. QT prolongation is a risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) and could indicate the presence of the potentially lethal mendelian long-QT syndrome (LQTS). Using a genome-wide association and replication study in up to 100,000 individuals, we identified 35 common variant loci associated with QT interval that collectively explain similar to 8-10% of QT-interval variation and highlight the importance of calcium regulation in myocardial repolarization. Rare variant analysis of 6 new QT interval-associated loci in 298 unrelated probands with LQTS identified coding variants not found in controls but of uncertain causality and therefore requiring validation. Several newly identified loci encode proteins that physically interact with other recognized repolarization proteins. Our integration of common variant association, expression and orthogonal protein-protein interaction screens provides new insights into cardiac electrophysiology and identifies new candidate genes for ventricular arrhythmias, LQTS and SCD.

We now report genome-wide association studies of pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). In discovery (N = 74,064) and follow-up studies (N = 48,607), we identified at genome-wide significance (P = 2.7 x 10(-8) to P = 2.3 x 10(-13)) four new PP loci (at 4q12 near CHIC2, 7q22.3 near PIK3CG, 8q24.12 in NOV and 11q24.3 near ADAMTS8), two new MAP loci (3p21.31 in MAP4 and 10q25.3 near ADRB1) and one locus associated with both of these traits (2q24.3 near FIGN) that has also recently been associated with SBP in east Asians. For three of the new PP loci, the estimated effect for SBP was opposite of that for DBP, in contrast to the majority of common SBP- and DBP-associated variants, which show concordant effects on both traits. These findings suggest new genetic pathways underlying blood pressure variation, some of which may differentially influence SBP and DBP.

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to determine current views regarding lateral release among experienced knee surgeons with a specific interest in the patellofemoral joint. Type of Study: Scientific survey. Methods: A questionnaire was developed and mailed to all members of an international group with a specific interest in disorders of the patellofemoral joint. Frequencies and percentages of responses were calculated for each question to determine surgeon consensus. We measured agreement among responses using the kappa statistic. This provided an indication of consistency for each question as well as correlation among the responses to different questions. Results: The survey response rate was 60%. Isolated lateral release was estimated to account for only 1 to 5 surgical cases per respondent per year, or 2% of cases performed annually. In the setting of arthroscopy or exploration, 74% of respondents believed that lateral release calls for specific informed consent. Strong consensus was found that objective evidence is needed to justify lateral release, but agreement was poor as to what clinical evidence provides the most appropriate indication for the procedure. Conclusions: Even among experienced knee surgeons with a special interest in diseases of the patellofemoral articulation, isolated lateral release is rarely performed. Strong consensus was found that isolated lateral release should not be undertaken without prior planning in the form of objective clinical indications and preoperative informed consent. Abstract: A high-resolution reference panel based on whole-genome sequencing data enables accurate imputation of HLA alleles across diverse populations and fine-mapping of HLA association signals for HIV-1 host response., Fine-mapping to plausible causal variation may be more effective in multi-ancestry cohorts, particularly in the MHC, which has population-specific structure. To enable such studies, we constructed a large (n = 21,546) HLA reference panel spanning five global populations based on whole-genome sequences. Despite population-specific long-range haplotypes, we demonstrated accurate imputation at G-group resolution (94.2%, 93.7%, 97.8% and 93.7% in admixed African (AA), East Asian (EAS), European (EUR) and Latino (LAT) populations). Applying HLA imputation to genome-wide association study data for HIV-1 viral load in three populations (EUR, AA and LAT), we obviated effects of previously reported associations from population-specific HIV studies and discovered a novel association at position 156 in HLA-B. We pinpointed the MHC association to three amino acid positions (97, 67 and 156) marking three consecutive pockets (C, B and D) within the HLA-B peptide-binding groove, explaining 12.9% of trait variance.
