2. Life cycle assessment (LCA) for flow batteries: A review of methodological decisions

Abstract: A transition from fossil to renewable energy requires the development of sustainable electric energy storage systems capable to accommodate an increasing amount of energy, at larger power and for a longer time. Flow batteries are seen as one promising technology to face this challenge. As different innovations in this field of technology are still under development, reproducible, comparable and verifiable life cycle assessment studies are crucial to providing clear evidence on the sustainability of different flow battery systems. Based on a review of 20 relevant life cycle assessment studies for different flow battery systems, published between 1999 and 2021, this contribution explored relevant methodological choices regarding the sequence of phases defined in the ISO 14,040 series: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation. Inspired by good practice examples, common gaps and weaknesses were identified and recommendations for comparative life cycle assessment studies were derived. This includes suggestions for an expanded functional unit definition, a provision of more detailed and transparent reporting of LCI data while using input/output tables. Outcomes of this study are also of relevance for the amendment of the Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC, where first drafts are under revision in the European Council, including the introduction of a battery passport, which should encourage battery producers to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid problematic materials.

Abstract: International audience; Large areas of the Vosges Mountains (North-East France) are actually submitted to clear cuts due to the invasion of spruce (Picea abies) stands by a bark beetle (Ips typograpus). The clear cuts are organized to save as much timber as possible but leave large soil areas without cover, prone to accelerated erosion in steep slopes. The question of reforestation is still open but lowland vegetation has started to appear (brambles, brooms, heathers, etc.). In some stands, natural regeneration is taking place. An impact of these clear cuts on the surface water quality of the headstreams flowing close to them is possible and should be investigated. To monitor the greening due to the mostly annual development of this new vegetation, satellite images are being used. Sentinel-2 images (ULU and UGP tiles, 10 m spatial resolution, available since 2017) have been retrieved. For earlier data, Landsat images (available on https://glovis.usgs.gov/) can be used but their spatial resolution is lower (30 m). Images with clouds over the areas of interest or snow have been discarded. The areas of interest (i.e. zones of clear cuts) have been defined after land surveys. The images have been used to calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using QGIS (https://www.qgis.org). To take into account the variation of global illumination during the year, reference zones have been defined in nearby lakes (Gérardmer, Longemer, Kruth).The vegetation kinetics of plots which have been cut over the last two years will be compared. In the case of the Pleinot watershed (Girmont-Val d’Ajol- Vosges Mountains, France), the changes in water quality (minerals and dissolved organic matter) of the headstream crossing one of the clear cuts will be discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Some 30 years ago, surveys of the surface water quality in the Vosges Moutains revealed a strong headstream water acidification, with high concentrations in dissolved aluminium, and the observed consequences on the aquatic biodiversity (Probst et al., 1990). In the early 2000s some of these headstreams (Grand Clos, Ventron, Rouge Rupt, Cellet) were included in a set of 16 headstreams which constitute the Vosges Acidification Observatory of the Zone Atelier du Bassin de la Moselle. Their surface water has been sampled monthly and analyzed in terms of major anions and cations, as well as dissolved aluminium and, since 2012, in terms of dissolved organic matter.In spring 2021, a new survey of the headstreams investigated in the 1990s was organized. Nineteen streams could be sampled. All the streams running on granite bedrock had a higher pH than in 1990. Most of them showed lower aluminium concentrations. The improvement for headstreams running on sandstone seems more limited and new data need to be collected. The presentation will include data collected in summer 2021 as well as long term data for the headstreams included in the Vosges Acidification Observatory to check seasonal and yearly effects.

Abstract: International audience; Agriculture is considered today as having major impacts on water quality in river basins. Transitionfrom this situation to a better integration of agricultural practices in their environment is sought bymany stakeholders and policy makers, from water, land development and also agriculture sectors.This appears costly when incorporating their various constraints. With the on-going research projectExpEau, the LTSER-FR network aims at (1) raising awareness on the opportunities to handleagricultural sources of water pollution collectively, and (2) comparing them in various watersheds.To that end, we are developing a hybrid serious game featuring activities and relations betweenfarmers, municipalities and river basin organization on a virtual river basin, generated from actualdatasets for topography, soil properties, and climate. For comparison sake, the game features aframed number of entities and possibilities of action, and the process of transforming actual datasetsis standardized. We consider representative small basins (ca. 100 km2) that we discretize into threesub-basins, each of them representing a municipality as the first level for collaboration. Each subbasin counts about 30 hexagons elementary tiles with a single land use for each.In practice, the game is made of a physical board and playing action cards, as well as a twin on-lineversion. Farmer players access to the information on their environment and choose cultural practicesthanks to a smartphone. Municipality and river basin organisation roles use their time and budget tofacilitate collaboration and support more virtuous practices as well as infrastructures to decreasepollution. A local server computes the impacts of these actions in terms of production, collective well-being and contamination, and updates the players’ data.During the game session, players can see the virtual watershed, the land use and the infrastructureson the physical board. According to their role, they receive situated information on production, onterritorial well-being and water quality and quantity.Involving students or local stakeholders, each session is followed by a debriefing that could produce(1) a local understanding on the interactions between agriculture and water quality, and (2) socio-ecosystem data to feed a cross LTSER analysis of these interactions.

6. Optical methods for water pollution characterization

Abstract: International audience; The management of water resources in a context of climate change, which increases the pressure on clean water availability, requires the development of monitoring tools to assess rapidly the quality of water and to characterize its eventual pollution. For several years now, optical methods have been proposed to monitor, without any reagent, different types of water: freshwater (rivers, lakes, etc.), estuarine water, seawater, groundwater, (polluted or not) as well as reclaimed water (which can be used for irrigation, cleaning, etc.), etc. Spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectroscopy can be combined usefully to characterize rapidly the global dissolved organic matter in water resources. Synchronous fluorescence, where the gap between excitation and emission wavelengths, is maintained constant during excitation wavelength scanning, is of particular interest.The objectives of the presentation are:-After a summary of the basic principles of synchronous fluorescence, the selection of the optimal gap between excitation and emission wavelengths will be discussed as well as ways to extract information out of the synchronous fluorescence spectra. -The combined use of synchronous fluorescence and spectrophotometry will be demonstrated using a large sample database covering large rivers (Seine, Danube, Moselle), headstreams (in mountains and plains), rivers suffering from large anthropogenic, agricultural and/or industrial pollution, reclaimed wastewaters, etc. Fig. 1. presents a subset of the database with synchronous fluorescence spectra collected along the Seine River. Abstract: International audience; The aim of the project is to be able, ultimately, to model the behavior of the Basse de Courbeligne headstream in response to climate change and anthropogenic pressure (reduction of air pollution, forest management). The Basse de Courbeligne is a headstream flowing on sandstone (mainly Buntsandstein) in the Vosges Mountains (North-East France). Since 2002, the water quality (pH, conductivity, major anions and cations) in its upper section has been monitored monthly within the framework of the Vosges Acidification Observatory (https://deims.org/22915474-7c50-47c1-8239-6c59fa924a1b). Its pH is acidic (5.5, standard deviation (S.D.) = 0.7), its conductivity is low (16.4 µS/cm, S.D. = 5.7µS/cm) and its average concentration in dissolved aluminum is around 240 µg/L (S.D. 125 µg/L) (period 2012-2021). At the headstream source, the aluminum concentration can reach 540 µg/L.In 2016 three plots have been set up on the right steep bank and instrumented to monitor the surface runoff water quality. The pH of each plot runoff is slightly higher than the headstream pH, the conductivity being similar. The main difference with the headstream lies in the dissolved aluminum concentration, which is much lower: 60 to 80 µg/L (S.D. = 50 µg/L) between 2017 and now. In the future, these plots will be submitted to different forest management protocols. Recently the downstream section of the Basse de Courbeligne has been investigated, as an expansion of the monitoring of the headstream to its full watershed is desirable: it has been noticed that the water pH at the watershed outlet (i.e. confluence with the Gentil Sapin stream) might be much more neutral (around 7). A detailed survey of the stream has been done concerning its water quality as well as the watershed geology and soil characteristics. The combined effect of a fault and of lateral springs are playing key roles in the stream flow and its water quality.After summarizing the long-term water quality data collected on the watershed, a first attempt to model its behavior using HYPE will be proposed.

Abstract: International audience; The AZHUREV constructed wetland (CW) is a large-scale pilot (6 ha) CW built at the outlet of the Grand Reims wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (250,000 equiv. inh.). This CW is composed of three basins (2 ha/basin), supplied in parallel by treated wastewater, each with different types and amount of initial planted vegetation (Phragmite australis, Scirpus lacustris and Glyceria maxima). P. australis is the only planted species still present in the basins; the others were eliminated (coypu diet). Despite this, the three basins are vegetated due to the natural development of opportunistic species (Ceratophyllum sp. and Lemna minor). The main objective of this CW is to further improve the quality of part of the treated water (250 m 3 /h) from WWTP Grand Reims and to treat urban runoff. The second objective is to create a reservoir for biodiversity. Since August 2019, sampling campaigns are conducted with the aim of collecting water, at the inlet and outlet of the CW, and sediments/plants, in the basins, to study the fate of organic micropollutants (OµMs) (80 pharmaceuticals, PFOS and AMPA). Up to now, only analyzes of OµMs in water have been performed. The extractions and analyzes of OµMs in plants and sediments are planned at the beginning of 2021. Among the 80 pharmaceuticals, only 13 (ketoprofen, diclofenac, atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, sotalol, tramadol, oxazepam, carbamazepin, gabapentin, irbesartan, sulfamethoxazole, metformin) are detected at the inlet and outlet. The OMs are removed to a different degree according to the seasons and by different processes in this CW : (i) ketoprofen, diclofenac, atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol are easily removed (>60%) throughout the year potentially due to photodegradation or sediment adsorption; (ii) tramadol, sotalol, oxazepam, carbamazepin, gabapentin, irbesartan, sulfamethoxazole and metformin are removed (20-35%) mainly during the summer due hypothetically to biodegradation or plant uptake; and (iii) AMPA and PFOS are barely removed (

Abstract: International audience; Agriculture practices are increasingly disconnected from their lo cal non-agricultural socio- environmental context. As a consequence, agriculture is considered to day as having major impacts on water quality in river basins and coastal areas. Tensions emerge between agricultural sector and some civic organizations. Transition from this situation to a better integration of agricultural practices in their environment is sought by many stakeholders and policy makers, from water, land development and also agriculture sectors. Efforts for increasing water quality while maintaininga sustainable agriculture may be expensive. With the on-going research project Exp'Eau (LTSER-FR Réseau des Zones Ateliers), our purpose is (1) to raise awareness on the opportunities to handle agricultural sources of water pollution collectively, and (2) to compare them in various watersheds.Our main hypothesis is that collective pathways thought at the territorial level may bring as many b enets as a farm level fo cus, and are less divisive.To that end, we are developing a serious game featuring activities and relations between farmers, municipalities and river basin organization on a virtual river basin to be generated from actual datasets for topography, soil properties, and climate. For comparison sake, the game is generic as it features a framed number of entities and possibilities of action, and the process of transforming actual datasets is standardized. Within any LTSER site, we consider a representative small basin (ca. 100 km2) that we discretize into three sub-basins, each of them representing a municipality as the first level for collaboration. Each subbasin counts about 30 hexagons elementary tiles with a single land use for each, under control of players.To facilitate the gaming phase, we develop a hybrid game comprising a physical board and playing action cards, as well as a twin on-line game.During the game, the players access to the information on their environment and carry out cultural practices thanks to a smartphone. A local server computes the impacts of these actions in terms of production, collective well-being and contamination, and up dates the players' data.Players can discuss, negotiate and experiment solutions collectively. During the game session, they can see the virtual watershed, the land use and the infrastructures on the physical board. According to their role, they receive information on their production, on territorial well-being and water quality and quantity at the outlets of subbasin, or water quality and quantity at the outlet of the whole basin.Each game session is followed by a debriefing on the spot that could produce(1) a lo cal understanding on the interactions between agriculture and water quality and their potential evolutions, and(2) socio-ecosystem data to feed a cross LTSER analysis of these interactions. This poster presents the specification process, the game structure and elements, the connection between players in the hybrid setting and the results of initial tests realized for the Moderbach watershed (Région Grand-Est, France). Other watersheds will be considered in a next future.

Abstract: International audience; The Morte-Femme peatland (Vosges Mountains, Northeastern France) is a protected area receiving treated wastewater from several textile industries. In spite of the treatment, these effluents still contain non-biodegradable micropollutants related to the textile process. Composed of highly substituted aromatic structures, optical brighteners (OBs) are water-soluble substances with a high affinity for cellulose fibers. OBs are used by the textile industry to mask the yellowing of cotton fabrics, as the blue light (400 – 440 nm range) they emit after UV excitation makes the fabrics appear whiter to the human eye. OBs can be quantified by HPLC-based techniques but this requires an expensive equipment. Furthermore, the exact nature of the OBs is generally unknown. Fluorescence-based methods are preferred for routine monitoring (Cao et al., 2009). For this purpose, yhe presence of OBs in the different watercourses running across the peatland has been assessed by differential synchronous fluorescence (i.e. before and after irradiation by UV (365 nm), with synchronous fluorescence spectra collected with a gap of 50 nm between excitation and emission) (Assaad et al., 2015). In order to discriminate OBs from the humic substances naturally present in the water samples, different irradiation durations have been tested. If a 15min irradiation is sufficient to detect OBs in solution in pure water, the presence of other elements (salts, dissolved organic matter, etc.) seems to hinder the irradiation effect. Therefore the effect of the irradiation duration has been tested on synthetic solutions of several OBs in presence of salts, organic matter and other potential textile additives. The final procedure has then been applied in the framework of the monitoring of the quality of the peatland surface water over two years. The results are discussed with respect to the streams natural discharge rate, which is highly dependent upon the season, and the textile industry activity.

Abstract: National audience; La Directive Cadre sur l’Eau impose l’atteinte ou le maintien du bon état écologique des masses d’eau. Il s’avère donc indispensable de disposer d’indicateurs précoces de la qualité des masses d’eau en conditions naturelles. Si de nombreux indicateurs existent, ils ne sont pas toujours en mesure de révéler les effets subtils d’une faible pression épisodique sur des temps d’exposition longs. Il est donc nécessaire de développer de nouveaux indicateurs, complémentaires de ceux actuels mais plus à même de traduire l’impact des contaminants chimiques, notamment les pesticides. Pour ce faire, les biofilms phototrophes présentent un large éventail de descripteurs structurels et fonctionnels pertinents pour le diagnostic environnemental.La contamination observée depuis plusieurs années dans la rivière Cleurie (Région Grand-Est, Vosges) constitue un cadre de travail idéal pour éprouver la sensibilité de ces indicateurs. En raison d’activités industrielles (textiles), ce petit cours d’eau vosgien de tête de bassin versant forestier présente un cocktail complexe de molécules, chroniques et épisodiques (du quotidien au saisonnier) mais en dessous des normes de qualité environnementales. Ce cocktail se caractérise par de fortes concentrations en glyphosate et son principal produit de dégradation, l’acide aminométhylphosphonique (AMPA) ainsi qu'une forte charge de matière organique dissoute (MO) dominée par des colorants et azurants optiques. Dans ce contexte notre objectif est d’estimer les potentiels effets écotoxiques et fonctionnels in situ de cette contamination complexe et d’identifier si ces effets sont liés au rejet de glyphosate et d’AMPA dans la Cleurie. Les résultats générés contribueront à une approche sociologique qui sera développée en parallèle pour suivre la circulation des savoirs scientifiques produits entre les différents acteurs (scientifiques, pouvoirs publics, citoyens…) impliqués dans une controverse locale mais qui s’inscrit dans celle plus générale et ancienne sur la toxicité des pesticides.Différentes stations ont été identifiées le long du linéaire de la Cleurie et un suivi annuel de la structure (biodiversité, déformations) et du fonctionnement (approche PICT-Pollution Induced Community Tolerance) des biofilms phototrophes a été initié. Parallèlement à cette approche de terrain, des bioessais ont été réalisés pour évaluer la toxicité du glyphosate sur les diatomées en conditions standardisées. Pour ce faire, les deux espèces Nitzschia palea et Gomphonema gracile ont été exposées pendant 7j à une large gamme de concentration de glyphosate (0,4-84 mg/L). Dans un second temps, les deux espèces ont été exposées sur une durée plus longue (28j) afin d’évaluer le potentiel tératogène du glyphosate sur la morphologie des frustules. Ces premiers résultats semblent indiquer que la déformation des diatomées benthiques et l'acquisition de tolérance au glyphosate par les biofilms constitueraient des marqueurs plus sensibles que les indices structurels classiques (IBD...) quant à la présence de glyphosate et d’AMPA le long du linéaire du cours d’eau.

Abstract: International audience; The AZHUREV surface-flow constructed wetland is a large-scale demonstration wetland built at the outlet of the Grand Reims (France) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Three 20,000 m 2 basins (rectangular shape with different depth distribution within each basin) have been created: the initial vegetation (mainly P. australis, S. lacustris and G. maxima) density was also different in each basin. Their aim is to polish a part of the treated wastewater (250 m 3 /h) from the Grand Reims WWTP, as well as to treat part of the Grand Reims stormwater. The basic monitoring of the wetlan is routinely done via sampling at the inlet and the outlet of each basin. However this does not provide information on the spatial distribution of the pollution in the basins, or of temperature and dissolved oxygen. Photographs are routinely taken from the shore but, due to the size of the basins, they do not provide detailed information on the development of the vegetation. To monitor the basins without disturbance, two drones are used:-An aquatic drone (Spyboat by CT2MC) which is remotely driven from the shore. It is fitted with a dissolved oxygen probe and a temperature sensor to collect data 10 cm below the surface. It can also collect liquid samples by means of a peristaltic pump. The superstation in oxygen observed with the aquatic drone in spring is correlated with the increase of the photosynthetically active solar radiation and the development of algae in the basins. Later in the year, anaerobic zones are detected under the duckweed-covered surface. The aquatic drone is more difficult to operate when the duckweed layer is becoming thick or when the surface is frozen.-An aerial drone (type DJI-S900), to better locate dense vegetation beds (especially those of G. maxima) and verify their development. Isolated plants cannot be located easily by the aerial drone. Satellite imaging (Landsat 8 OLI images obtained from https://glovis.usgs.gov) is also tested. The satellites images are collected every two weeks but cannot be used in presence of clouds. In spite of their 30m resolution, they allow to monitor the variation with respect to time of the vegetation, especially the development of duckweed on the wetland surface. The poster will present the latest 2019 results obtained with these tools and discuss further their advantages and disadvantages.

Three 20,000 m 2 basins (rectangular shape with different depth distribution within each basin) have been created: the initial vegetation (mainly P. australis, S. lacustris and G. maxima) density was also different in each basin. Their aim is to polish a part of the treated wastewater (250 m 3 /h) from the Grand Reims WWTP, as well as to treat part of the Grand Reims stormwater. The wetland has been operated since July 2017. Flowmeters have been installed at the inlet and the outlet of each basin, as well as conductimeters and temperature sensors. Sampling campaigns have been organized on a monthly basis: the samples have been collected at the inlet and exit of each basin as well as in the basins with an aquatic drone. They have been analysed in terms of nitrogen species (total dissolved nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia) and dissolved inorganic and organic carbon. The dissolved organic matter has been further characterized by optical methods (synchronous fluorescence and UV-visible spectroscopy). Plants have been collected and their carbon and nitrogen content has been determined. There is no infiltration from the basins to the aquifer, as evidenced by the hydraulic balance. The results obtained after more than one year of operation show a global nitrogen removal rate of 50% (equivalent for nitrates and ammonia). An increase of the dissolved organic carbon has been observed between the inlet and the outlet in summer and fall: this is due to anaerobic decomposition of aquatic plants underneath a thick layer of L. minor, which has gradually covered the basins. In November 2018, a large maintenance of the site has been set up with plant cutting and removal, in order to promote vegetation development in spring. The presentation will describe the complete carbon and nitrogen balance over the two years of operation of the wetland and compare the basin efficiency in function of the vegetation. BIO: N. 26. Application of the TeaComposition initiative in an agricultural environment

Abstract: International audience; The long-term TeaComposition initiative is a worldwide project organized under the umbrella of ILTER to study the decomposition of specific litters (green and red teas) in a large number of sites. The project has raised the interest of the agricultural sector with several questions such as what is the effect of farming practices (tillage, use of natural or chemical fertilizers, etc.) or of the type of crops on litter decomposition. However, for a number of crops (such as cereals, oilseeds, sugar beets), harvesting is done every year and it is not possible to leave the teabags for several years in the soil. The TeaComposition protocole should therefore be adapted for this type of sites. Since 2017, a large-scale experiment has been set up in the Northeast of France. Some 450 (in 2017) to 650 (in 2018) teabags of each type have been buried in different types of soil used for different crops in about 160 parcels. The incubation duration has been limited to three months, in most cases with an implementation between March and May, depending upon the crops. Practical questions such as how to bury efficiently the teabags (i.e. to insure the best contact between teabags and soil), how to weigh them simply in absence of high-precision weighing scale, how to retrieve them easily in the parcel or how to protect them from predators, had to be answered. As litter decomposition is function of soil temperature and humidity, indices has to be defined based on easily obtainable weather data (air temperature, rainfall) at the closest possible weather stations. Finally the change in the nature of the bags (PET instead of nylon) and the possible dependence of the litter decomposition upon the tea harvest year have encourage the accompanying researchers to run specific tests in lab-scale mesocosms and in the field. The presentation will discuss the results obtained with the adapted protocole by the farmers and agricultural institutions and discuss further its advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract: National audience; La forêt de la Reine est un massif forestier de plus de 5000 ha, au Nord Est de la France. Cette forêt, qui est avant tout une grande zone humide qui alimente de nombreux cours d'eau temporaires, se situe au niveau de la plaine de la Woëvre, est ancienne, tirant son nom de la reine Brunehaut. En 1150, l’abbaye de Rangeval a été construite, accueillant des moines jusqu’à la Révolution française. Cs moines ont entretenu la forêt de la Reine jusqu’à la Révolution. De nombreux aménagements tels que des fossés ont été réalisés afin d’anticiper les potentiels risques d’inondation de la forêt et des cultures sous-jacentes, et d’améliorer la vie des villageois des alentours (aménagements de ruisseaux rectilignes pour l’alimentation en eau, création d’étangs, etc.). La conduite sylvicole de la forêt a été modifiée à plusieurs reprises depuis la fin du 17ème siècle. Il y a quelques années, le gestionnaire de la forêt (ONF) a entrepris de restaurer l’hydromorphologie de certains de ces petits cours, souvent temporaires, altérés chimiquement par les pratiques agricoles : retour au lit d’origine, mise en place de petits seuils poreux ou de déflecteurs en bois.Ces petits cours d’eau sont typiques des cours d’eau de tête de bassin versant lesquels représentent, selon les estimations, jusqu’à 80% du linéaire hydrographique total du bassin versant, contribuant ainsi de façon majeure à l’approvisionnement en eau des écosystèmes aval. Ils constituent un réceptacle final de la matière produite dans le bassin versant (matière allochtone), cette matière représentant la source principale de nutriments et d’énergie pour le fonctionnement de ces écosystèmes. Le projet « BV Plaine » vise à accroître nos connaissances sur ce type de cours d’eau pour lesquels il est difficile d’accéder à des milieux de référence. En s’appuyant sur une équipe interdisciplinaire, le projet « BV Plaine » assurera un suivi annuel, multiparamétrique, de quelques cours d’eau de tête de bassin versant, de référence et/ou restaurés, en plaine lorraine. Ce projet permettra de proposer ultérieurement un site observatoire original sur ces cours d’eau d’intérêt écologique et méconnus, de fédérer des chercheurs de la ZAM autour d’un même objet d’étude en y intégrant des sciences humaines, et d’acquérir des connaissances fondamentales sur le fonctionnement des cours d’eau de tête de bassin versant en plaine.Des études préalables sont en cours pour caractériser la topographie et le fonctionnement (débit, physico-chimie, biologie) de trois de ces petits cours d’eau, sous-affluents de la Moselle. Des appareils photographiques automatiques ont été installés pour suivre les évolutions des hauteurs d’eau en fonction des conditions météorologiques ainsi que le développement global de la végétation. Des campagnes de prélèvements ont été effectuées pour de premières caractérisations physico-chimiques (pH, conductivité, éléments majeurs, matière organique dissoute) et biologiques (prélèvements et identifications de macroinvertébrés aquatiques). Des contrastes chimiques sont d’ores et déjà visibles deux d’entre eux, pourtant distants de quelques centaines de mètres. Les communautés d’invertébrés sont également diversifiées, et incluent des espèces souvent peu étudiées et possédant des traits biologiques et écologiques caractéristiques des milieux temporaires.

Abstract: International audience; In France, many rivers face complex cocktails of contaminants at concentrations sometimes close to environmental quality standards (EQS). This type of complex pollution is typically encountered in the case of pesticides, and is usually poorly reflected by the bioindicators currently implemented within the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). In fact these indicators are not always able to reveal the subtle effects of this type of pollution, i.e. direct episodic and chronic or indirect (via trophic transfer, etc.) effects. It is therefore essential to develop indicators able to detect early signs of changes in water quality under natural conditions, but also to assess the possible associated indirect effects (e.g. propagation of effects in the food chain, and from upstream to downstream) and their consequences on the functioning of ecosystems. For this purpose, phototrophic biofilms present a wide range of structural and functional descriptors that could be of interest.The contamination that has been observed for several years in the Cleurie River (Eastern France, Vosges) appears to be an ideal case study site for testing such descriptors. Due to industrial activities (textiles), this small headwater forested stream exhibit a complex cocktail of molecules, chronic and episodic (from daily to seasonal basis) but below EQS. This cocktail is characterized by high concentrations of glyphosate and AMPA as well as a high load of dissolved organic matter (OM) dominated by optical brighteners/dyes. The current media coverage of glyphosate associated to frequent changes in the color of the water feed a local environmental controversy, which is part of the more general and old one on the toxicity of pesticides. In this context, an in situ monitoring, solicited by stakeholders, has been recently initiated in order to identify global indicators allowing studying this contamination. Our objectives are to fingerprint the chemical signature of the toxic pressure (e.g. using integrative passive sampling and spectrometry) and to characterize its effects on biofilms, a pivotal ecological player in these ecosystems. This presentation will focus on the first results: traditional biofilm-based descriptors (primary production, biodiversity) will be compared to others currently under development, either structural (the occurrence of deformities displayed by diatoms) or functional (acquisition of tolerance to glyphosate via a PICT-Pollution Induced Community Tolerance approach). These results will be further used within the framework of a broader interdisciplinary approach aiming at studying the circulation of scientific knowledge between the different actors (researchers, end-users, stakeholders…) involved in this controversy.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, the feasibility of producing electrolytic iron from red muds in a strongly alkaline medium at 110 °C was studied. The red mud samples from a French industry were characterized by various techniques (ICP-AES, SEM, XRD) to determine their chemical and mineralogical compositions. The main phase in the red mud investigated was hematite (α-Fe2O3). Iron electrodeposition tests from red mud suspended in a 12.5 mol/L NaOH electrolyte were conducted at constant current in a stirred electrochemical cell. The solid:liquid ratio and amounts of impurities contained in red mud were varied to optimize the faradaic yield and the production rate of electrolytic iron. Whereas hematite can be reduced to iron with a current efficiency over 80% for a current density (cd) up to 1000 A/m 2 , the current efficiency with red muds was highest for a cd below 50 A/m 2 and then decreased regularly to 20% at 1000 A/m 2. In all cases, the deposit produced contained more than 97% metal iron. The moderate performance of the process investigated with red mud was attributed to a troublesome adsorption of red mud particles on the cathode, making the reduction far less efficient than that with hematite.

Abstract: International audience; Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a significant component of freshwaters affecting biogeochemical cycling of metals and water resource. Various inputs (natural and anthropic) in aquatic ecosystems contribute to the chemical complexity and to the variability in composition and reactivity of dissolved organic matter, including fulvic acids (FA). The aim of this study was to describe at a molecular scale the DOM along the Seine Rivers in order to gain insights into its various origins, and chemical characteristics (compositions, structures and reactivity), by means of complementary approaches using optical method measurements (UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy) and ESI-FTMS analysis of FA (electro-spray ionisation Fourier Transform mass spectrometry). Results Surface water samples were collected at different sampling point stations of year 2017 between the source and the estuary. The filtrated samples were directly examined by the aforementioned optical methods. FAs were extracted and purified using OASIS HLB resin. Molecular formula of organic molecules constitutive of FA were extracted from ESI(-)-FTMS data. Aromaticity index calculations led to define three classes of FA molecules, namely condensed aromatics, not condensed aromatics and aliphatic-like compounds. Results were discussed in terms of CHONx (x=S, P, Cl) molecules. Molecular compositions were reported in Van Krevelen (VK) diagrams (H/C atomic ratio vs O/C atomic ratio). Identified molecules (~2470), from a sampling point downstream of Paris, are mainly characterized by O/C ratios lower than 0.7. While nitrogen-containing molecules (80%) are found to be present in the trois classes of compounds, phosphorous (8%) and sulfurous (6%) containing molecules fall only in the aliphatic region of VK diagrams. Abstract: International audience; Beyond their selective role, some antibiotics continue to exert an effect below their minimum inhibitory concentration level, where they can act as signaling molecules to modulate various bacterial activities: biofilm formation, exopolymers production, virulence, quorum sensing, cell mobility, and even the dissemination of specific antibiotic resistance genes. This clearly asks the question of the possible effects antibiotics can have once diluted after the disposal of reclaimed wastewater into the aquatic environment or during its reuse. Lately we developed a biosensor approach to identify antibiotics interfering with gene regulation. This approach lies on the use of bacteria genetically modified to express a bioluminescence once the promoter of a relevant function is induced by a modulating antibiotic. Rather than testing arbitrary chosen concentrations, the biosensor is exposed to diffusion gradients of antibiotics in agar plate (as for antibiograms) while luminescence profiles are recorded by CCD camera. With such approach we could detect several antibiotics able to trigger the activation of promoters controlling the mobility functions of "integrative and conjugative elements" (ICEs) such as Tn916 and SXT. An automated image analysis algorithm combined with a modelling of the diffusion process in the agar has been developed to convert the luminescence profile into a concentration profile information, enabling to estimate the level of induction and the range of sub-MIC concentration at which an antibiotic remain effective. The biosensor strains are first spread onto the agar of a square Petri dish before receiving one to sixteen antibiotics loaded disks deposited in an equispaced manner. The agar plate is incubated at 30°C allowing the antibiotics to diffuse and luminescence and transmitted light images are regularly acquired over time. An automated image processing system has been developed to detect the induction and inhibition zones around each antibiotic loaded disk. For the present experiment two antibiotics were used: ciprofloxacin (CIP) (broad spectrum) and nalidixic acid (NAL) (limited spectrum). Both inhibit the DNA gyrase while CIP inhibits also topoisomerase IV. Commercially available discs (BioRad) were used (30 µg for NAL and 5 µg for CIP). Additional discs were prepared by loading cellulose discs with antibiotic solutions. The MIC values were determined in separate experiments in liquid phase for each antibiotic. The diffusion of antibiotics in agar is modelled through a finite element computational model based on Fick's second law of diffusion. The simulations are performed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics software (Fluent by ANSYS). The mesh contains ≈ 80,000 cells. It is assumed that the antibiotics deposited in the thin top agar layer exhibit higher diffusivities in this layer than in the bulk solid agar. Abstract: International audience; Hydrogen production via steam and autothermal reforming of soybean waste frying oils (WFOs) is thermodynamically investigated via the Gibbs free energy minimization method. The thermodynamic optimum conditions are determined to maximize hydrogen production while minimizing the methane and carbon monoxide contents and coke formation. Equilibrium calculations are performed at atmospheric pressure over a wide range of temperatures (400-1200 degrees C), steam-to-WFO ratios (S/C: 1-15) and oxygen-to-WFO ratios (O/C: 0.0-2.0). The baseline case used for the study considers soybean WFO after 8 h of use (WFO8). The influence of frying time on the performance of reforming reactors is also discussed. The results show that the optimum conditions for steam reforming can be achieved at reforming temperatures between 650 degrees C and 850 degrees C and at a steam to carbon molar (S/C) ratio of approximately 5. The recommended operation conditions for the SR of WFO8 are proposed to be T = 650 degrees C and S/C ratio = 5. Under these conditions, a hydrogen yield of 169.83 mol/kg WFO8 can be obtained with a CO concentration in the SG of 3.91% and trace CH4 (0.03%), without the risk of coke formation. Hydrogen production from autothermal systems can be optimized at temperatures of 600-800 degrees C, S/C ratios of 3-5, and O/C ratios of 0.0-0.5. Under these conditions, thermoneutrality is obtained with O/C ratios of 0391-0.455. The recommended thermoneutral conditions are S/C = 5, T = 600 degrees C and O/C = 0.453. Under these conditions, 146.45 mol H-2/kg WFO8 can be produced with only 2.89% CO and 0.06% CH4 in the synthesis gas. The effect of frying time of soybean WFO on hydrogen productivity is shown to be negligible.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the use of the raw acoustical turbidity and velocity data as a flow online monitoring tool. Its aim is to demonstrate that, with adequate instrumental settings, interesting results can directly be seen on the raw data. As illustration, some experimental results on a combined acoustic turbidity and velocity analysis on a river are shown. It demonstrates the great potential of the acoustic measurements in sediment transport studies by the combined information on velocity and turbidity. Another application is the study of a wastewater collector inlet for which the comparison with standard measurement methods is possible. The acoustic turbidity raw data can easily be used for qualitative suspended solids concentration studies. It is also shown that more accurate results on the water height can be obtained through the acoustic turbidity.

Abstract: International audience; Optical sensors, namely a submersible UV-visible spectrophotometer, a fluorescence probe for dissolved organic matter and a fluorimeter with a circulation cuvette dedicated to tryptophan-like fluorescence measurement have been deployed for the real-time monitoring of a periurban stream. Biofouling was a main issue for the UV-visible spectrophotometer and the tryptophan-like fluorimeter. However nitrates variation could be monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy based on the maximum of the second derivative of the spectrum in the UV-range.; Des capteurs optiques, à savoir un spectrophotomètre UV-visible submersible, une sonde de fluorescence pour la matière organique dissoute et un fluorimètre avec une cuvette de circulation dédiée à la mesure de la fluorescence de matière organique dissoute de type tryptophane, ont été déployés pour la surveillance en temps réel d’un ruisseau péri urbain. L’encrassage était le principal problème pour le spectrophotomètre UV-visible et le fluorimètre de type tryptophane. Mais la variation de nitrates peut être suivie par spectroscopie UV-vis du maximum de la dérivée seconde du spectre dans la gamme UV.

Abstract: International audience; In order to characterize the pollution discharged into the Moselle River and some of its tributaries, spectroscopic techniques, namely UV-vis spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, have been combined. UV-visible spectra were analysed using the maximum of the second derivative at 225 nm (related to nitrates), the SUVA(254) and E2/E3 indices (related to the nature of organic matter). Synchronous fluorescence spectra (Delta lambda = 50 nm) presented different shapes depending upon the type of pollution. The pollution results from anthropogenic activities: untreated domestic sewage due to misconnections in a periurban river, effluent from urban WWTPs, agricultural runoff (nitrates) in several streams, discharge from a paper mill (humic-like substances due to wood processing) and from steel mills (PAHs).
