It has long been known that quantum particles moving in a periodic lattice and subject to a constant force field undergo an oscillatory motion that is referred to as Bloch Oscillations (BOs). However, it is also known that, under quite general conditions, a biased mesoscopic system connected to leads should settle in a steady-state regime characterized by a constant electric current (described by the Landauer formula). Since both effects are driven by a constant field, these two quantum transport phenomena appear to be at odds with each other. Here, we solve this apparent contradiction by theoretically demonstrating that BOs can actually be observed in biased two-terminal mesoscopic devices as a transient phenomenon, which relaxes for long times to a steady-state current that agrees with the Landauer formula. Furthermore, we also combine analytical and numerical time-evolution results for a one-dimensional tight-binding model of a biased two-terminal mesoscopic system, in order to characterize the decay times of the transient BOs and establish the conditions under which they can occur., Comment: 13 pages + 12 Figures. The RAIA Observatory serves the main maritime activities of the Galicia-Northern Portugal Euroregion and contributes to collaborative observational networks. Under the framework of coastal risk management, environmental indicators are fundamental tools for the evaluation and mitigation of environmental risks, showing the current state and helping to predict future changes on ecosystem health regarding environmental risks. In last years, the different partners of the RAIA Observatory have identified 38 environmental indicators, in which 12 key risks affecting the ecosystem services of the Euroregion Galicia-Northern Portugal are being evaluated. Data was analyzed and compiled by the various partners of the RAIA Observatory and the development and optimization of the environmental indicators has been done according to the specifications provided by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) and the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). The resulting environmental indicators are included and shared on a publicly-accessible Web service, georeferenced and accompanied by graphics (https://marrisk.inesctec.pt/public/#!/indicators). 8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion; 1589-1595, This paper presents a methodology for distributed energy resources (DER) valuation on distribution planning, considering the formation of non-isolated microgrids in medium voltage feeders. An algorithm is developed to allocate the microgrid-forming DER and the respective islanding switch to maximize the reliability of a feeder. The proposed DER valuation and allocation approach makes it possible to assess the feasibility of utility-led DER power and energy contracts as non-wires planning alternatives, focusing on reliability improvement, and accounting for other key aspects, such as investment deferral and system services. A set of real medium voltage feeders with low reliability is used to test the approach, considering photovoltaic plants with battery storage as microgrid-forming DER.

The disastrous 2017 fire season in Portugal lead to widespread recognition of the need for a paradigm shift in forest and fire management. We focused our study on Alvares, a parish in central Portugal which had 60% of its area burned in 2017, with a large record of historical. We evaluated how different fuel treatment strategies can reduce wildfire hazard in Alvares, through i) a fuel break network with different priorities and ii) random fuel treatments resulting from stand-level management intensification. To assess this, we developed a stochastic fire simulation system (FUNC-SIM) that integrates uncertainties in fuel distribution over the landscape. If the landscape remains unchanged, Alvares will have large burn probabilities in the north, northeast, and center-east areas of the parish that are very often associated with high fire line intensities. The different fuel treatment scenarios decreased burned area between 12.1-31.2%, resulting from 1%-4.6% increases in annual treatment area, and reduced 10%-40% the likelihood of wildfires larger than 5000 ha. On average, simulated burned area decreased 0.22% per each ha treated, and effectiveness decreased with increasing area treated. Overall, both fuel treatment strategies effectively reduced wildfire hazard and should be part of a larger, holistic and integrated plan to reduce the vulnerability of the Alvares parish to wildfires.

38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1452-1458, A cost allocation methodology for prosumers in a DC microgrid is proposed in this paper, based on the distribution of internal microgrid losses, energy cost and microgrid operator required income. Furthermore, an optimal economic dispatch problem is formulated to reduce overall microgrid energy acquisition costs and is solved using a meta-heuristic algorithm. The proposed approach is generic and considers different types of internal DC microgrid agents: consumers, independent producers and prosumers with behind-the-meter storage and/or generation; the microgrid connection to the main AC distribution grid is also considered in the model. The theoretical framework proposed in this paper aims to incentivize optimal energy management of flexible resources in a multi-agent DC microgrid, while is simple enough to be used as a reference in practical internal tariff designs for DC microgrids. The simulation results for a 48 V, six-node microgrid, indicate the effectiveness of both cost allocation and economic dispatch methodologies.

A demência é uma síndrome neurológica de agravamento progressivo, sem cura, cuja prevalência tem vindo a aumentar devido ao envelhecimento da população. Existe um grande desconhecimento entre profissionais de saúde e cuidadores relativamente à melhor abordagem da alimentação nos doentes com demência avançada. Dado não existirem recomendações nacionais acerca deste tema, foi elaborado um documento de consenso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Medicina Interna e da Associação Portuguesa de Nutrição Entérica e Parentérica que explicita as orientações existentes relativas à abordagem dos problemas alimentares nos doentes com demência avançada. A demência avançada é uma condição terminal em que deve ser privilegiado o conforto do doente, frequentemente acamado, incapaz de comunicar verbalmente e com dificuldade na alimentação. Nesta população, a literatura atual não recomenda o uso de alimentação por sonda (nasogástrica, nasojejunal, gastrostomia percutânea ou jejunostomia percutânea), que está associada a maior risco de infeção, maior utilização de meios de contenção e de- senvolvimento de úlceras de decúbito. Como alternativa, recomenda-se a alimentação por via oral de acordo com a tolerância e vontade do doente (alimentação de conforto). Do ponto de vista ético e legal, é legítimo não proceder à artificialização da alimentação na fase terminal da demência caso este procedimento seja contrário aos valores da pessoa e não se objetivem benefícios. In a unified framework, we examine four sources of uncertainty in exchange rate forecasting models: (i) random variations in the data, (ii) estimation uncertainty, (iii) uncertainty about the degree of time-variation in coefficients, and (iv) uncertainty regarding the choice of the predictor. We find that models which embed a high-degree of coefficient variability yield forecast improvements at horizons beyond 1-month. At the 1-month horizon, and apart from the standard variance implied by unpredictable fluctuations in the data, the second and third sources of uncertainty listed above are key obstructions to predictive ability. The uncertainty regarding the choice of the predictors is negligible.

Research shows that the predictive ability of economic fundamentals for exchange rates varies over time; it may be detected in some periods and disappear in others. This paper uses bootstrap-based methods to select time-specific conditioning information for the prediction of exchange rates. By employing measures of the predictive ability over time, along with statistical and economic evaluation criteria, we find that our approach based on pre-selecting and validating fundamentals across bootstrap replications leads to significant forecast improvements and economic gains relative to the random walk. The approach, known as bumping, selects parsimonious models that have out-of-sample predictive power at the one-month horizon; it is found to outperform various alternative methods, including Bayesian, bagging, and standard forecast combinations.

Importance The effects of recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration on clinical outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain uncertain. Objective To determine if lung recruitment associated with PEEP titration according to the best respiratory-system compliance decreases 28-day mortality of patients with moderate to severe ARDS compared with a conventional low-PEEP strategy. Design, Setting, and Participants Multicenter, randomized trial conducted at 120 intensive care units (ICUs) from 9 countries from November 17, 2011, through April 25, 2017, enrolling adults with moderate to severe ARDS. Interventions An experimental strategy with a lung recruitment maneuver and PEEP titration according to the best respiratory–system compliance (n = 501; experimental group) or a control strategy of low PEEP (n = 509). All patients received volume-assist control mode until weaning. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was all-cause mortality until 28 days. Secondary outcomes were length of ICU and hospital stay; ventilator-free days through day 28; pneumothorax requiring drainage within 7 days; barotrauma within 7 days; and ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month mortality. Results A total of 1010 patients (37.5% female; mean [SD] age, 50.9 [17.4] years) were enrolled and followed up. At 28 days, 277 of 501 patients (55.3%) in the experimental group and 251 of 509 patients (49.3%) in the control group had died (hazard ratio [HR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.42; P = .041). Compared with the control group, the experimental group strategy increased 6-month mortality (65.3% vs 59.9%; HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.38; P = .04), decreased the number of mean ventilator-free days (5.3 vs 6.4; difference, −1.1; 95% CI, −2.1 to −0.1; P = .03), increased the risk of pneumothorax requiring drainage (3.2% vs 1.2%; difference, 2.0%; 95% CI, 0.0% to 4.0%; P = .03), and the risk of barotrauma (5.6% vs 1.6%; difference, 4.0%; 95% CI, 1.5% to 6.5%; P = .001). There were no significant differences in the length of ICU stay, length of hospital stay, ICU mortality, and in-hospital mortality. Conclusions and Relevance In patients with moderate to severe ARDS, a strategy with lung recruitment and titrated PEEP compared with low PEEP increased 28-day all-cause mortality. These findings do not support the routine use of lung recruitment maneuver and PEEP titration in these patients. Trial Registration clinicaltrials.gov Identifier:NCT01374022

Objective: Whether intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) associated with non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC-ICH) has a better outcome compared to ICH associated with vitamin K antagonists (VKA-ICH) is uncertain. Methods: We performed a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis of cohort studies comparing clinical and radiological outcomes between NOAC-ICH and VKA-ICH patients. The primary outcome measure was 30-day all-cause mortality. All outcomes were assessed in multivariate regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, ICH location, and intraventricular hemorrhage extension. Results: We included 7 eligible studies comprising 219 NOAC-ICH and 831 VKA-ICH patients (mean age = 77 years, 52.5% females). The 30-day mortality was similar between NOAC-ICH and VKA-ICH (24.3% vs 26.5%; hazard ratio = 0.94, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.67–1.31). However, in multivariate analyses adjusting for potential confounders, NOAC-ICH was associated with lower admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (linear regression coefficient = −2.83, 95% CI = −5.28 to −0.38), lower likelihood of severe stroke (NIHSS > 10 points) on admission (odds ratio [OR] = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.30–0.84), and smaller baseline hematoma volume (linear regression coefficient = −0.24, 95% CI = −0.47 to −0.16). The two groups did not differ in the likelihood of baseline hematoma volume < 30cm3 (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 0.81–1.62), hematoma expansion (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.63–1.48), in-hospital mortality (OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.49–1.11), functional status at discharge (common OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.57–1.07), or functional status at 3 months (common OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.75–1.43). Interpretation: Although functional outcome at discharge, 1 month, or 3 months was comparable after NOAC-ICH and VKA-ICH, patients with NOAC-ICH had smaller baseline hematoma volumes and less severe acute stroke syndromes. 35th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1636-1640, This paper presents the modelling and load flow simulation of a low-voltage distribution DC microgrid which is developed in the test area of the Group of Studies and Development of Energy Alternatives (GEDAEUFPA). This microgrid is intended to serve as a basis for conducting tests of operation modes, power conditioning devices, control strategies, among other possibilities, as well as applications related to low voltage direct current distribution systems, and to validate mathematical models of related processes. The simulated microgrid structure is composed of three photovoltaic generators of 500 Wp each, a battery bank of 4.8 kWh, three charge controllers forming a 24 V DC bus, and load banks distributed along a grid with a total length of 200 m. The modelling of microgrid components are presented in detail, and the load flow study used is derived from the traditional Newton- Raphson power flow algorithm used in AC systems.

35th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1946-1952, This paper discusses the implications that several aspects, such as cost, types of services to be provided, and policies, may have on the sizing of PV systems with batteries, and presents a framework for decision making on the adoption of such systems, evaluating the profitability and the risks involved. The methodology is based on a sensitivity analysis carried out by simulating several scenarios of electricity prices, system costs, and the possible existence of incentives. The results show that nowadays the viability of PV systems with batteries is still very dependent on a price drop of the battery systems. This makes the adoption of such systems a risky investment, since long payback periods are needed. Moreover, ancillary services such as power factor compensation are only viable to increase the profitability of other services such as energy trade with the grid. If power factor compensation is the sole purpose of the system, the battery would be unnecessary since the storage capacity would be very small, and solutions like capacitor banks would be better suited.

Biodiesel has been considered the most promising fuel to replace part of the fossil diesel consumed worldwide, since it is a renewable and biodegradable fuel. There is the need of reduced kinetic mechanisms for the effective numerical simulation of these fuels. In this way, the aim of this work is the development of a reduced mechanism of moderate stiffness for Methyl Formate (MF). MF is not indicated as a biodiesel surrogate due to its higher reactivity, but its study enables to isolate the role of each ester in combustion processes. So, based on a detailed mechanism consisting of 950 reactions and 176 species, Directed Relation Graph with Depth First Search and Sensitivity Analysis are employed to obtain a small mechanism with 43 reactions and 23 species for MF. This mechanism has reasonable accuracy compared to the full mechanism and decreases the computational cost for obtaining the solution of the reactive flow.Keywords: Biodiesel, Methyl Formate, Mechanism Reduction, Sensitivity Analysis

Combustion plays a significant role for transforming energy, and its better understanding contributes to the reduction of pollutants emission, fuel efficiency and stability. Biodiesel is an alternative to the diesel derived from oil. Since biodiesel composition is too complex to be modeled directly, studies are frequently concentrated in biodiesel surrogates, such as Methyl Butanoate (MB). Efficient numerical simulations of reactive flows, such as combustion, depends on the existence of detailed kinetics mechanisms for fuels. However, detailed mechanisms can have tens or hundreds species and hundreds or thousands reactions, which induces significant stiffness to the system of equations. Consequently, there is the need to develop reduced mechanisms with fewer variables and moderate stiffness, maintaining a good level of accuracy of the model. The aim of the present work is to develop reduced mechanisms for MB, applying the Directed Relation Graph (DRG), which is a method that shows the coupling of species through a coefficient based on the reaction rate. Graph search algorithms and some sort of sensitivity analysis are also applied to the skeletal mechanism developed by DRG to further eliminate species and reactions. The advantage of using these methods is the elimination of redundant species and reactions, decreasing the computational cost needed to solve the chemical equations, of about two orders of magnitude for MB, making the numerical simulation of combustion of high chain fuels feasible.Keywords: Combustion, Mechanism Reduction, DRG, Sensitivity Analysis

33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2335-2339, Despite the extensive discussion on the design of isolated systems using intermittent renewable sources, the integration of autonomous Rewable Energy Systems (RES) for joint operation in a smart micro-grid or connected to a utility main grid is a relatively new subject. The integration allows increased flexibility and modularity, which are important characteristics to improve the overall robustness of the system and tackle unpredicted adversities. This paper presents the implementation of the facility dedicated to the research on micro-grids at the Laboratório de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos (LSF) of the Universidade de São Paulo, in Brazil. The facility allows the simulation of several topologies and even energy tariff conditions, providing useful insights in the operation and control of an area with several interconnected micro-grids and connected to the main distribution grid. Moreover, the infrastructure is expected to contribute to capacity building and the development of national standards for connection and operation.

33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2246-2253, This paper describes the modeling of the electrical equipment and control mechanisms used in the power conditioning system of a grid-connected photovoltaic system (GCPVS), such as the photovoltaic generator, the DC/DC converter, the voltage inverter with PWM control, its output filter, as well as the converter controls and their functionalities, and the interconnection of the system with the distribution grid and load. In addition to the modeling of the grid-tie inverter, the main equipment of the power conditioning system, this paper describes the synchronization form of the photovoltaic (PV) generation with the electricity distribution grid, considering the power injection control method, the maximum power point tracking technique for maximizing the energy supplied by the photovoltaic generator, and the complete topology of the proposed PV system. The main objective is to provide a computational model capable of simulating the behavior of the GCPVS elements, varying the climatic conditions and the power demand on the AC side, presenting consistent results for different operating conditions, such as variations of climatic parameters (solar irradiance, wind speed, and ambient temperature) and load. In these cases, it is possible to evaluate the behavior of the system, supplying both the active and non-active power of the load, according to the need.

33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1999-2006, This work presents the Laboratory of Hybrid Systems and Mini-grids, installed at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) by the Group of Studies and Development of Energy Alternatives (GEDAE). The laboratory aims to promote the research in hybrid systems and mini-grids through practices of installation and commissioning of the associated technologies and, especially, through experiments and operational tests, with results that will serve as basis for evaluating the performance of such systems. The main components are described and information about mounting, installation and commissioning of the components is also given here briefly. The results of operational tests show the effectiveness of system operation.

Aims: This study analyzes the immediate effects of using TheraSuit® (TS) on the gait of a child with left spastic hemiplegia level II (GMFCS). Methods: Spatiotemporal gait parameters and kinematic variables in the sagittal plane were compared between baseline and TS conditions. Results: Positive effects were noted on temporal parameters in the TS condition, such as a reduced gait cadence. The analysis of angular displacements in joint angles showed that at initial contact there was a reduction in the: (i) Plantarflexion on the paretic side; (ii) Dorsiflexion on the non-paretic side; and (iii) Knee flexion angles in both limbs. Furthermore, an increase in hip and knee extension angles during stance, and a decrease in knee and hip flexion on the non-paretic limb during swing were also detected. Conclusions: Further investigations with larger samples are necessary to confirm these effects of wearing TS on gait kinematics, aiming toward providing a more functional and safer gait pattern in children with spastic hemiplegia.

Research shows that the predictive ability of economic fundamentals for exchange rates is time-varying; it may be detected in some periods and disappear in others. This photo essay, whose images and captions were created by farmers living in Cantanhez National Park, Guinea-Bissau, illustrates and analyzes the diverse ways in which these West African photographers and collaborative researchers chose to represent change. Some of the visual and narrative devices employed by the photographers include staging the past; representing before/after situations; and thoughtful composition in the visual depiction of changed and changing physical environments. Beyond our initial research focus on perceptions of climatic changes, these farmers turned photographers shared compelling portrayals of change in its social, economic, ecological and cultural complexity, in some cases offering counter-narratives to the dominant environmentalist narrative about this protected area. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Part D shows the recursive relative Root Mean Squared Forecast Error (RMSFE) for the Bayesian model averaging excluding and including time-varying coefficients. In part E we use predictive likelihoods to measure relative forecasting performance of the Bayesian model selection (BMS) excluding time-varying coefficients relative to BMS including time-varying coefficients. Part F reports results for additional robustness checks. We present the details regarding the estimation of the dynamic linear model that we consider in part G. Part H describes the data sources and the last part elaborates on the procedure to construct bootstrapped critical values for the DMW test.

Many exchange rate papers articulate the view that instabilities constitute a major impediment to exchange rate predictability. In this thesis we implement Bayesian and other techniques to account for such instabilities, and examine some of the main obstacles to exchange rate models' predictive ability. We first consider in Chapter 2 a time-varying parameter model in which fluctuations in exchange rates are related to short-term nominal interest rates ensuing from monetary policy rules, such as Taylor rules. Unlike the existing exchange rate studies, the parameters of our Taylor rules are allowed to change over time, in light of the widespread evidence of shifts in fundamentals - for example in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis. Focusing on quarterly data frequency from the crisis, we detect forecast improvements upon a random walk (RW) benchmark for at least half, and for as many as seven out of 10, of the currencies considered. Results are stronger when we allow the time-varying parameters of the Taylor rules to differ between countries. In Chapter 3 we look closely at the role of time-variation in parameters and other sources of uncertainty in hindering exchange rate models' predictive power. We apply a Bayesian setup that incorporates the notion that the relevant set of exchange rate determinants and their corresponding coefficients, change over time. Using statistical and economic measures of performance, we first find that predictive models which allow for sudden, rather than smooth, changes in the coefficients yield significant forecast improvements and economic gains at horizons beyond 1-month. At shorter horizons, however, our methods fail to forecast better than the RW. And we identify uncertainty in coefficients' estimation and uncertainty about the precise degree of coefficients variability to incorporate in the models, as the main factors obstructing predictive ability. Chapter 4 focus on the problem of the time-varying predictive ability of economic fundamentals for exchange rates. It uses bootstrap-based methods to uncover the time-specific conditioning information for predicting fluctuations in exchange rates. Employing several metrics for statistical and economic evaluation of forecasting performance, we find that our approach based on pre-selecting and validating fundamentals across bootstrap replications generates more accurate forecasts than the RW. The approach, known as bumping, robustly reveals parsimonious models with out-of-sample predictive power at 1-month horizon; and outperforms alternative methods, including Bayesian, bagging, and standard forecast combinations. Chapter 5 exploits the predictive content of daily commodity prices for monthly commodity-currency exchange rates. It builds on the idea that the effect of daily commodity price fluctuations on commodity currencies is short-lived, and therefore harder to pin down at low frequencies. Using MIxed DAta Sampling (MIDAS) models, and Bayesian estimation methods to account for time-variation in predictive ability, the chapter demonstrates the usefulness of suitably exploiting such short-lived effects in improving exchange rate forecasts. It further shows that the usual low-frequency predictors, such as money supplies and interest rates differentials, typically receive little support from the data at monthly frequency, whereas MIDAS models featuring daily commodity prices are highly likely. The chapter also introduces the random walk Metropolis-Hastings technique as a new tool to estimate MIDAS regressions.

A infância e a adolescência são períodos de um rápido crescimento físico e desenvolvimento cognitivo e de aquisição de competências sociais e comportamentais. Durante estes períodos, é necessária uma ingestão alimentar apropriada para cada grupo etário de forma a assegurar um crescimento adequado e um bom estado de saúde. As necessidades nutricionais de crianças e adolescentes são diferentes das dos adultos e mudam à medida que o processo de desenvolvimento ocorre. A aquisição de hábitos alimentares saudáveis, nesta fase, poderá assegurar que estes perdurem ao longo do ciclo de vida. Neste manual entende-se por dieta vegetariana um padrão alimentar que utiliza predominantemente produtos de origem vegetal, podendo ou não incluir laticínios ou ovos. Este padrão de consumo alimentar tem sido largamente estudado nos últimos anos, nomeadamente na prevenção de algumas doenças crónicas frequentes na nossa sociedade. À semelhança de outros padrões alimentares, o padrão vegetariano, quando bem planeado pode fornecer todas as necessidades nutricionais de crianças e adolescentes. O aporte energético deverá ser adequado a cada idade e o crescimento monitorizado. Deve ser dada particular atenção à ingestão proteica, de ácidos gordos essenciais, ferro, zinco, cálcio, iodo e vitaminas B12 e D. A ingestão de alimentos fortificados e/ou a suplementação, em alguns casos, poderá ser necessária. De modo a estruturar uma alimentação adequada para crianças e adolescentes que seguem um padrão alimentar vegetariano é importante ter em consideração os seguintes aspetos: A alimentação deverá ser completa, equilibrada e variada. Alimentos como cereais, hortícolas, fruta, leguminosas, frutos gordos, sementes e os seus derivados deverão estar contemplados no dia alimentar do padrão vegetariano. The acquisition of healthy food habits at this stage may ensure that these habits remain throughout the cycle of life. In this manual, vegetarian diet is perceived as a food pattern which uses predominantly plant-based products, where dairy products or eggs may or may not be included. This pattern of food intake has been studied extensively in recent years, namely within the scope of prevention of some frequent chronic diseases which occur in our society. Alike other food patterns, when properly planned the vegetarian pattern can fulfil all nutritional needs of children and adolescents. Energy intake should be adequate to age and growth should be monitored. Special attention should be paid to protein intake, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium, iodine and vitamins B12 and D. Intake of fortified food products and/ or supplementation may, in some cases, be necessary. So as to structure a proper diet for children and adolescents who follow a vegetarian food pattern, it is important to consider the following aspects: The diet should be complete, well-balanced and varied. Food products such as cereals, vegetables, fruit, legumes, oleaginous fruits, seeds and their derivatives should be included on the vegetarian days food pattern. Adequate energy intake should be ensured. The addition of energetically dense food products such as pulses (beans, lentils, chickpeas, broad beans, etc.) and their derivatives, oleaginous fruits (whole nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, etc.) and shortening of oleaginous fruits (peanut butter, hazelnut spread, etc.) may be advantageous. So that protein needs are achieved, and normal nitrogen retention occurs, it is essential that energy intake is adequate and there is variety in the ingested food, namely with food products rich in protein, such as pulses, pseudocereals (quinoa, amaranth), whole grain cereals, dairy products (or plant-origin alternatives) and eggs. 32nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 3027-3032, Despite the considerable increase of grid-connected photovoltaic systems’ (GCPVS) applications in Brazil, since the publication, in 2012, of Normative Resolution number 482, that regulates the grid-connection of micro and mini distributed generation systems, economic issues are still the main obstacle to the faster dissemination of GCPVS installations in the country. In this context the present paper analyses the discounted payback period of GCPVS installed in the whole country, considering the variation of the electricity tariffs applied by the Brazilian utilities and the installation’s investment costs. The study is applied to residential and commercial small-scale PV systems, connected to low voltage grids, and is accomplished with the aid of a software developed by the authors. The analysis considers the reality of the 27 Brazilian states, including Distrito Federal, the country´s capital, selecting the main utility of each state. The results indicate a strong dependence of the system’s economic feasibility on the electricity tariffs applied and on the investment costs, varying from an unfeasible situation to a payback period of less than 5 years, which is very positive considering the present scenario. The results also make possible a construction of a GCPVS economic feasibility Brazilian map and a three-dimensional graph, indicating the states and the conditions that present the best economic scenarios for the installation of GCPVS.

International audience; As a consequence of selective pressure exerted by the immune response during hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a high rate of nucleotide mutations in the viral genome is observed which leads to the emergence of viral escape mutants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the evolution of the amino acid (aa) sequence of the HCV nonstructural protein 3 (NS3) in viral isolates after liver transplantation. Six patients with HCV-induced liver disease undergoing liver transplantation (LT) were followed up for sequence analysis. Hepatitis C recurrence was observed in all patients after LT. The rate of synonymous (dS) nucleotide substitutions was much higher than that of nonsynonymous (dN) ones in the NS3 encoding region. The high values of the dS/dN ratios suggest no sustained adaptive evolution selection pressure and, therefore, absence of specific NS3 viral populations. Clinical genotype assignments were supported by phylogenetic analysis. Serial samples from each patient showed lower mean nucleotide genetic distance when compared with samples of the same HCV genotype and subtype. The NS3 samples studied had an N-terminal aa sequence with several differences as compared with reference ones, mainly in genotype 1b-infected patients. After LT, as compared with the sequences before, a few reverted aa substitutions and several established aa substitutions were observed at the N-terminal of NS3. Sites described to be involved in important functions of NS3, notably those of the catalytic triad and zinc binding, remained unaltered in terms of aa sequence. Rare or frequent aa substitutions occurred indiscriminately in different positions. Several cytotoxic T lymphocyte epitopes described for HCV were present in our 1b samples. Nevertheless, the deduced secondary structure of the NS3 protease showed a few alterations in samples from genotype 3a patients, but none were seen in 1b cases. Our data, obtained from patients under important selective pressure during LT, show that the NS3 protease remains well conserved, mainly in HCV 3a patients. It reinforces its potential use as an antigenic candidate for further studies aiming at the development of a protective immune response.

Recent evidence highlights that commodity price changes exhibit a short-lived, yet robust contemporaneous effect on commodity currencies, which is mainly detectable in daily-frequency data. We use MIDAS models in a Bayesian setting to include mixed-frequency dynamics while accounting for time-variation in predictive ability. Using the random walk Metropolis-Hastings technique as a new tool to estimate our class of MIDAS regressions, we find that for most of the commodity currencies in our sample exploiting this short-lived relationship yields to statistically more precise out-of-sample exchange rate point and density forecasts relative to the no-change benchmark. Further, the usual low-frequency predictors, such as money supplies and interest rates differentials, typically receive little support from the data at monthly forecasting horizons. In contrast, models featuring daily commodity prices are highly likely.

Interactions between thalassemia and hemochromatosis may further increase iron overload. The ethnic background of the Brazilian population is heterogeneous and studies analyzing the simultaneous presence of HFE and thalassemia-related mutations have not been carried out. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the H63D, S65C and C282Y mutations in the HFE gene among 102 individuals with alpha-thalassemia and 168 beta-thalassemia heterozygotes and to compare them with 173 control individuals without hemoglobinopathies. The allelic frequencies found in these three groups were 0.98, 2.38, and 0.29% for the C282Y mutation, 13.72, 13.70, and 9.54% for the H63D mutation, and 0, 0.60, and 0.87% for the S65C mutation, respectively. The chi-square test for multiple independent individuals indicated a significant difference among groups for the C282Y mutation, which was shown to be significant between the beta-thalassemia heterozygote and the control group by the Fisher exact test (P value = 0.009). The higher frequency of inheritance of the C282Y mutation in the HFE gene among beta-thalassemic patients may contribute to worsen the clinical picture of these individuals. In view of the characteristics of the Brazilian population, the present results emphasize the need to screen for HFE mutations in beta-thalassemia carriers. We analyse the role of time-variation in coefficients and other sources of uncertainty in exchange rate forecasting regressions. Our techniques incorporate the notion that the relevant set of predictors and their corresponding weights, change over time. We find that predictive models which allow for sudden, rather than smooth, changes in coefficients significantly beat the random walk benchmark in out-of-sample forecasting exercise. Using an innovative variance decomposition scheme, we identify uncertainty in coefficients estimation and uncertainty about the precise degree of coefficients' variability, as the main factors hindering models' forecasting performance. The uncertainty regarding the choice of the predictor is small.

An expanding literature articulates the view that Taylor rules are helpful in predicting exchange rates. In a changing world however, Taylor rule parameters may be subject to structural instabilities, for example during the Global Financial Crisis. This paper forecasts exchange rates using such Taylor rules with Time Varying Parameters (TVP) estimated by Bayesian methods. In core out-of-sample results, we improve upon a random walk benchmark for at least half, and for as many as eight out of ten, of the currencies considered. This contrasts with a constant parameter Taylor rule model that yields a more limited improvement upon the benchmark. In further results, Purchasing Power Parity and Uncovered Interest Rate Parity TVP models beat a random walk benchmark, implying our methods have some generality in exchange rate prediction., Comment: 84 pages including additional appendix

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dramatic recovery (DR) after thrombolysis is dependent of vessel recanalization and is predictive of favorable clinical outcome. Successful recanalization is not equivalent to DR. Our objective was to assess its frequency and evaluate clinical and biochemical predictors and their prognosis. METHODS: We analyzed prospectively registered data from January 2007 to September 2012. All patients with anterior circulation stroke and NIHSS≥10 were included. Improvement of ≥10 or a score ≤3 24h after thrombolysis was defined as DR. RESULTS: In the 230 patients included, DR frequency was 23% (53 patients). DR group had lower admission NIHSS (14 vs 17, p=0.024), less total anterior circulation infarcts (p=0.009), more partial anterior circulation infarcts (p=0.003) and lower blood glucose on admission (118 vs 128mg/dL, p=0.013). All patients with DR had an Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) ≥7, vs 89.3% without DR (p=0.013). Strychnine acts as an inhibitor of post-synaptic neuronal inhibition and intoxication leads to distinct clinical manifestations which may culminate in death. Since its commercialization is prohibited in most countries, cases of strychnine intoxication are now rare. We present a case of an elderly patient who voluntarily ingested a white powder thought to be strychnine. He developed myoclonus, startle response, and episodes of generalized muscle contractions accompanied by respiratory arrest in one occasion. Diazepam, valproic acid and supportive treatments were able to control manifestations, however the patient died after 2 days. Our aim is to alert clinicians that, despite its rarity, strychnine intoxication may still be seen in emergency departments, and clinical outcome can be influenced by rapid recognition and timely institution of adequate treatment.

In the present study, a practical activity is proposed to adopt an experimental approach to demonstrate the relationship between the equilibrium potential for K and transmembrane electrical potential without glass micropipettes. A conventional setup for recording contractile activity of isolated smooth muscle preparations was used based on the events elegantly described by Somlyo and Somlyo in the 1960s. They showed that, in response to a given stimulus, smooth muscle cells may contract, recruiting electromechanical or pharmacomechanical coupling by mechanisms that involve, or not, changes in transmembrane potential, respectively. By means of contractions and relaxations of a ring-like preparation from the rat mesenteric artery, it is possible to observe the functional consequences of handling K concentration in the extracellular compartment and the effects caused by opening K channels in that preparation, which are significant when the cell membrane establishes an electrical potential difference between intra- and extracellular compartments (driven mainly by K permeability under resting conditions). The effects observed by students fit well with values predicted by Nernst and Goldman-Hodgin-Katz equations, and we demonstrated that the activity is able to improve students’ comprehension regarding basic principles of bioelectricity.

Introdução: Os doentes críticos são um grupo de do- entes francamente hipermetabólicos que necessitam de um suporte nutricional adequado às suas necessidades. Objectivos: Verificar o melhor método para determinar as neces- sidades energéticas de doentes críticos. Material e métodos: Estudo transversal analítico no qual foram recolhidos dados demográficos, determinado o consumo energético quer por calorimetria indirecta, quer pela fórmula de Harris-Benedict e além disso calculado o fator de stress de pacientes internados entre 2004 e 2009. Resultados: Incluíram- se neste estudo 139 doentes (33% feminino, 67% masculino). Foram efetuadas 298 medidas pela calorimetria indireta, com tempo útil médio de 9 horas, que foram compa- radas às necessidades energéticas calculadas a partir da equação de Harris-Benedict. Encontraram-se diferenças significativas entre os resultados obtidos. O consumo energético mensurado foi 27,9 Kcal/kg (mediana), e quando comparado à equação de Harris-Benedict, evidenciou-se um valor subestimado em 25% (7 Kcal/kg). A mediana do fator de stress encontrado para a correção da fórmula de Harris- Benedict foi de 1,31. Discussão e conclusão: Embora exista uma variabilidade do consumo energético nesses doentes, a fórmula de Harris-Benedict, quando associada a um fator stress entre 1,25 – 1,35, poderá ser um método eficaz na avaliação das necessidades nutricionais. Por outro lado, pode-se optar também por uma abordagem mais simplificada, utilizando valores energéticos entre 25 a 30 Kcal por quilograma de peso. Obviamente, a calorimetria indireta continua a ser o “gold standard’’ da avaliação do consumo energético, já que nos permite adequar as necessidades energéticas em função do consumo energético in- dividual de acordo com o gasto real de cada doente.

Antibodies against N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are identified in the form of immune-mediated encephalitis in which typical manifestations include neuropsychiatric symptoms, seizures, abnormal movements, dysautonomia and hypoventilation. The authors report two cases of anti-NMDAR encephalitis with different presentations and patterns of progression. The first patient presented with status epilepticus and later developed psychosis, pyramidal signs and diffuse encephalopathy. The second patient presented with acute psychosis followed a week later by seizures, dystonia, rigidity, oromandibular dyskinesias and dysautonomia. Possible mechanisms responsible for the clinical manifestations of this disease are discussed in light of recently described additional clinical and laboratory findings.

Este artigo analisa a estrutura, o conteúdo e o tipo de informação divulgada em um Website especializado na cadeia produtiva do leite. Para este estudo, escolheu-se o portal Milkpoint, criado e explorado comercialmente pela AgriPoint Consultoria Ltda., desde 2001, com o propósito de contribuir para a formação do moderno produtor de leite, fundamentalmente, por meio da oferta da informação necessária à sua evolução. O estudo é de natureza exploratória e qualitativa. Entre os resultados, o estudo postula que o conteúdo existente no portal é predominantemente escrito, necessitando de um melhor tratamento da informação, tanto no aspecto gráfico como estético, bem como pela necessidade do uso eficiente da linguagem multimídia e hipertextual, que é própria da Web.

It was suggested that intravenous thrombolysis (IT) leads to larger extent recanalization in cardioembolic stroke. In this work we assess if this has beneficial clinical traduction. METHOD: We evaluated 177 patients undergoing IT, which were categorized into cardioembolic (CE) and non-cardioembolic (NCE). National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and modified Rankin scale were compared. RESULTS: The mean age was 67.4 ± 12.01 and 53.8% were male. The mean NIHSS was: 14 (admission), 9 (24 h) and 6 (discharge), similar in subgroups. The difference between NIHSS at admission and 24 hours was 4.17 ± 4.92 (CE: 4.08 ± 4.71; NCE: 4.27 ± 5.17, p=0.900) and at admission and discharge there was an average difference of 6.74 ± 5.58 (CE: 6.97 ± 5.68; NCE: 6.49 ± 5.49, p=0.622). The mRS at discharge and 3 months was not significantly different by subtype, although individuals whose event was NCE are more independent at 3 months. CONCLUSION: Ours findings argue against a specific paper of IT in CE. It can result from heterogeneity of NCE group.
