Abstract

26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1262-1265, Ribbon Growth on Substrate (RGS) technology is a cost-effective approach in terms of silicon usage per watt peak. The wafers are cast directly out of the melt onto reusable substrates. This process omits material losses which occur e.g. by wire-sawing in standard blockcast wafering techniques. Also the wafers can be cast at a high production speed in the order of one wafer per second. However, the material suffers from various crystal defects and has grain sizes between 0.1 mm and 1 mm. To develop and adjust new cell designs, we investigate the effect of a selective emitter structure on RGS cells. To realize a selective emitter the etch-back approach is used. It is found that the expected gain of jsc is accompanied by losses in the fill factor. These effects compensate each other in such a way, that no significant increase in solar cell efficiency is observable up. These first experiments with selective emitters on RGS wafers results in efficiencies up to 12.4%.

25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition / 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, 6-10 September 2010, Valencia, Spain; 2223-2226, Ribbon Growth on Substrate (RGS) silicon wafers are cast directly from the melt onto reusable substrates. With a high production speed in the order of one wafer per second and the avoidance of material loss due to wire-sawing like in the block-casting technology, RGS is a cost-effective material. The wafers are multicrystalline with typical grain sizes between 0.1 mm to 1 mm. Up to now, the adapted solar cell process contained an open rear side metallization realized by an Al-grid [1]. This had to be implemented because of increased process induced shunting in cell areas with Al back side metallization. For rear side passivation and avoidance of possible shunting, two new cell back side designs are tested and compared to the RGS baseline process. In this work, silicon carbide as a dielectric passivation layer and its properties regarding a co-firing temperature step and the application of such a layer in the RGS solar cell process is investigated. It is found that a cell process for RGS containing a dielectric layer on the cell rear side in connection with Laser Fired Contacts (LFCs) enhances the cell performance by reducing the area of possibly contacted shunting paths further and thus increasing the parallel resistance of the solar cells. The gain in efficiency is hereby less attributed to the improved rear side passivation quality for this material with a limited diffusion length.

Abstract

“For forty years,” Sun Yat-sen said in March 1925 in the Tsungli's Will, “I have devoted myself to the cause of the people's revolution with but one end in view, the elevation of China to a position of freedom and equality among the nation.” “But,” he lamented, “the work of the Revolution is not yet done.” For forty years since, Chiang Kai-shek has been at the very center of the Chinese political limelight. During half of this period, from 1928 to 1949, he was to a remarkable degree China itself. But like Sun, he has also failed to consummate the Kuomintang movement and the work of the revolution.

In July 1928, upon the termination of the Northern Expedition, Chiang Kai-shek presented a sacrificial message to the departed leader, Sun Yat-sen, whose body reposed in the Pi-yün Temple outside the city of Peking. Sun had committed his life, Chiang declared, to the attainment of eight tasks in the rebuilding of a new China: (1) the explication of the Kuomintang's principles and the expunging of ‘unorthodox views’, (2) the constructing of a unified party through the curbing of individual freedom and the acceptance of party discipline, (3) the transfer of the national capital to Nanking to symbolize a new beginning for the nation, (4) a purposeful change in the ‘heart’ of the citizenry, (5) the psychological, economic, political and social reconstruction of the nation, (6) the disbanding of troops, (7) the termination of civil strife and a total commitment to national defence, and (8) the speedy introduction of local autonomy. These personal commitments—and public admonitions, as they were also meant to be—covered a wide range of national concerns, dealing as they did with ideology and organization, power and legitimacy, political socialization and national integration. It is noteworthy, however, that Chiang at the moment of personal triumph turned his attention above all to the ideological function of the ruling élite in the transitional Chinese society.
