ScienCity es una actividad que viene siendo continuada desde 2018 con el objetivo de dar a conocer los conocimientos y tecnologías emergentes siendo investigados en las universidades, informar de experiencias, servicios e iniciativas puestas ya en marcha por instituciones y empresas, llegar hasta decisores políticos que podrían crear sinergias, incentivar la creación de ideas y posibilidades de desarrollo conjuntas, implicar y provocar la participación ciudadana, así como gestar una red internacional multidisciplinar de investigadores que garantice la continuación de futuras ediciones. Scientific practices stemming from colonialism, whereby middle- and low-income countries supply data for high-income countries and the contributions of local expertise are devalued, are still prevalent today in the field of palaeontology. In response to these unjust practices, countries such as Mexico and Brazil adopted protective laws and regulations during the twentieth century to preserve their palaeontological heritage. However, scientific colonialism is still reflected in many publications describing fossil specimens recovered from these countries. Here, we present examples of ���palaeontological colonialism��� from publications on Jurassic-Cretaceous fossils from NE Mexico and NE Brazil spanning the last three decades. Common issues that we identified in these publications are the absence of both fieldwork and export permit declarations and the lack of local experts among authorships. In Mexico, access to many fossil specimens is restricted on account of these specimens being housed in private collections, whereas a high number of studies on Brazilian fossils are based on specimens illegally reposited in foreign collections, particularly in Germany and Japan. Finally, we outline and discuss the wider academic and social impacts of these research practices, and propose exhaustive recommendations to scientists, journals, museums, research institutions and government and funding agencies in order to overcome these practices.

Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) is the rate-limiting enzyme of heme oxidative degradation, generating carbon monoxide (CO), free iron, and biliverdin. HO-1, a stress inducible enzyme, is considered as an anti-oxidative and cytoprotective agent. As many studies suggest, HO-1 is highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract where it is involved in the response to inflammatory processes, which may lead to several diseases such as pancreatitis, diabetes, fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. In this review, we highlight the pivotal role of HO-1 and its downstream effectors in the development of disorders and their beneficial effects on the maintenance of the gastrointestinal tract health. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide due to its symptoms, early metastasis, and chemoresistance. Thus, the mechanisms contributing to pancreatic cancer progression require further exploration. Circadian rhythms are the daily oscillations of multiple biological processes regulated by an endogenous clock. Several evidences suggest that the circadian clock may play an important role in the cell cycle, cell proliferation and apoptosis. In addition, timing of chemotherapy or radiation treatment can influence the efficacy and toxicity treatment. Here, we revisit the studies on circadian clock as an emerging target for therapy in pancreatic cancer. We highlight those potential circadian genes regulators that are commonly affected in pancreatic cancer according to most recent reports. Yes

An adult water chevrotain was euthanized due to severe non-responsive pododermatitis. Incidentally, multiple to coalescing cholesterol granulomas were identified within the right diencephalon, characterized by the presence of foamy macrophages and cholesterol clefts consistent with encephalic xanthomas. No clinical signs or predisposing conditions associated with this finding were identified. This is the first known report of encephalic xanthomas in this species. RESUMEN. Un ciervo ratón grande adulto es eutanasiado debido a una pododermatitis que no responde al tratamiento. Incidentalmente, se identifican numerosos granulomas de colesterol en el diencéfalo derecho, los que se caracterizan por la presencia de macrófagos espumosos y cristales de colesterol, consistentes con xantomas cerebrales. No se identificaron signos clínicos o condiciones predisponentes asociados con este hallazgo. Este es el primer reporte de xantomas cerebrales en esta especie.

La Paz es un municipio del suroriente del departamento de Santander, ubicado en la región andina de Colombia, que posee una extensa red de sistemas subterráneos que no ha sido explorada satisfactoriamente a nivel bioespeleológico. Los autores confirmaron 21 ambientes hipogeos para esta zona del departamento, los cuales fueron valorados utilizando información secundaria y visitas de campo. Sin embargo, en este estudio se logró establecer que, a nivel local, se ignora la riqueza kárstica y biológica del municipio, lo cual se evidenció por la ausencia de este conocimiento en los habitantes que, en su mayoría, reconocen la existencia de solo dos cuevas (El Molino y El Indio). La información referente a fauna y flora asociada a estos ecosistemas es insuficiente y escasa; de igual forma, las entidades territoriales encargadas de la administración ambiental no reportaron estrategias de sensibilización ambiental con la comunidad, ni planes de acción o estrategias orientadas a conservación y uso de estos ambientes hipogeos. La Paz is a municipality located in the Southeast of the department of Santander, in the Andean region of Colombia, which has an extensive network of subterranean systems that has not been satisfactorily explored at the bio-speleological level. The authors confirmed 21 hypogean environments for this area of the department, which were assessed using secondary data and field visits. However, in this study it was established that karstic and biological richness in the municipality is ignored, which was evidenced by the absence of this knowledge in the local people, who mostly recognized the existence of only two caves (El Molino and El Indio). Information regarding fauna and flora associated with these ecosystems is insufficient and limited. Similarly, local authorities responsible for environmental management strategies reported no environmental awareness in the community, or action plans oriented to conservation and use of these hypogean environments.

Körpernahe Sensornetzwerke können schon heute zur Steigerung der Lebensqualität beitragen, indem der Patient sein gewohntes Umfeld nicht zwingend verlassen muss. Der natürliche und nächste Schritt zur Verbesserung dieser wertvollen Diagnosesysteme beruht auf die Einbeziehung körpernaher Aktuatoren, welche auch eine gleichzeitige Therapierung erlauben. Durch einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, der klinische und technologische Erkenntnisse vereint, entsteht ein Sen-sor- und Aktuatornetzwerk, das am Beispiel eines sich in Entwicklung befindlichen innovativen Systems zur Behandlung von Parkinson vorgestellt wird.

Se estudiaron las características morfológicas del proceso de ensanchamiento de poros en películas de alúmina (Al2O3) nanoporosa. El montaje experimental involucra un set-up de bajo costo que utiliza aluminio comercial. El procedimiento comprende una serie de pretratamientos, un proceso de doble anodizado, y finaliza con la inmersión de la nanoestructura porosa inicialmente fabricada, en una solución acuosa de ácido sulfúrico durante diferentes intervalos de tiempo, que conduce a un ensanchamiento de poros. Se estudió la morfología de las muestras obtenidas por microscopia electrónica de barrido, y sus principales propiedades (tamaño, distribución de tamaño de poros, circularidad y porosidad) se evaluaron en función del tiempo de ensanchamiento. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren una dependencia de la morfología con el tiempo de exposición de las nanoestructuras fabricadas. Estos resultados abren la posibilidad de fabricar nanoporos con propiedades ajustables y de bajo costo. The experimental setup involves a set-up that uses low cost commercial aluminum. The process comprises a series of pre-treatments, a double anodizing process, and ends with the immersion of the porous nanostructure (originally manufactured) in an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, for different time intervals (pore widening). The morphology of the obtained samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy, and its main properties (size, pore size distribution, roundness and porosity) were evaluated as a function of the widening time. The results suggest a dependency of the exposure time with the morphology of the nanostructures fabricated. Se estudió como afecta el tamaño de nanopartículas de ferrita de cobalto en el desorden cristalino por efecto de superficie. Las nanopartículas se obtuvieron por el método de coprecipitación de sales. Para controlar el tamaño realizaron diferentes tratamientos térmicos posteriores a la síntesis. La estructura cristalina y la morfología se evaluaron por medio de Difracción de rayos-X y Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión de Alta Resolución. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran en forma cuantitativa, cómo la variación en la relación superficie/volumen es responsable de las deformaciones presentes en las nanoestructuras In this work we studied the effect of the size of cobalt ferrites magnetic nanoparticles in the crystalline clutter by surface effects. The salts coprecipitation method is used to obtain the nanoparticles and the size control is achieved making thermal treatments on the obtained powders of the synthesis. Complete, exceptionally-preserved skulls of the Permian lungfish Persephonichthys chthonica gen. et sp. nov. are described. Persephonichthys chthonica is unique among post-Devonian lungfishes in preserving portions of the neurocranium, permitting description of the braincase of a stem-ceratodontiform for the first time. The completeness of P. chthonica permits robust phylogenetic analysis of the relationships of the extant lungfish lineage within the Devonian lungfish diversification for the first time. New analyses of the relationships of this new species within two published matrices using both maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference robustly place P. chthonica and modern lungfishes within dipterid-grade dipnoans rather than within a clade containing Late Devonian 'phaneropleurids' and common Late Paleozoic lungfishes such as Sagenodus. Monophyly of post-Devonian lungfishes is not supported and the Carboniferous-Permian taxon Sagenodus is found to be incidental to the origins of modern lungfishes, suggesting widespread convergence in Late Paleozoic lungfishes. Morphology of the skull, hyoid arch, and pectoral girdle suggests a deviation in feeding mechanics from that of Devonian lungfishes towards the more dynamic gape cycle and more effective buccal pumping seen in modern lungfishes. Similar anatomy observed previously in 'Rhinodipterus' kimberyensis likely represents an intermediate state between the strict durophagy observed in most Devonian lungfishes and the more dynamic buccal pump seen in Persephonichthys and modern lungfishes, rather than adaptation to air-breathing exclusively.

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of intravitreal ranibizumab in the treatment of macular edema due to branch retinal vein occlusions (BRVO) with and without serous macular neuroretinal detachment (SMD).

In this work we calculate the most general left-handed neutrino thermal self-energy at one-loop order in perturbation theory using the Mellin summation technique. We perform this calculation in the real-time formalism of quantum field theory at finite temperature and density assuming that there exists an excess of leptons over antileptons in the medium. Thus, we obtain a novel general expression for the left-handed neutrino effective thermal mass which depends on lepton masses, boson masses, leptonic chemical potential and temperature. Con la construcción del Hospital San Vicente de Paúl en Medellín se originó en sus alrededores una vocación de territorio que perdura. Numerosas instituciones relacionadas con la prestación de servicios de salud se han establecido en las cercanías de la Avenida Juan del Corral, destacándose el Hospital en sí mismo, la Clínica León XIII, las facultades de Medicina, Salud Pública, Odontología y Enfermería de la Universidad de Antioquia, la Clínica del CES y la IPS de la Universidad de Antioquia; son establecimientos impulsores de las actividades complementarias a la salud que dan una oportunidad a la ordenación y denominación del sector como Bulevar de la Salud. A las autoridades territoriales les corresponde favorecer el desarrollo de esta zona, para fortalecer la ciudad como una plataforma de servicios de salud, según lo establecido en el Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial (POT) para Medellín. Este trabajo propone bases o lineamientos para el desarrollo y ejecución del proyecto de recuperación del corredor urbano de la salud Juan del Corral, con el objetivo de contribuir a hacer realidad dicho propósito. With the constructions of the Hospital San Vicente de Paul building at Medellín, started a new zone vocation in their surroundings. Several health institutions have being settled close to 51D avenue, “Avenida Juan del Corral”. The main ones are the Hospital itself, the Clínica León XIII, the faculties of medicine, public health, odontology, and nursery of Universidad de Antioquia and Clínica CES and Universidad de Antioquia IPS. A spontaneous increase of ground uses related with health was generated, and is still growing. From the point of view of urban planning, this is an opportunity to re-order and to improve the nearby districts. Generation of positive conditions for the surroundings development is one of the city authority’s responsibilities, especially when the recognition of Medellín by their high-quality health services is a city objective. Accordingly with this issue, the aim of this academic document is to offer to planning authorities guidelines to generate urban-favorable conditions for the Avenida Juan del Corral, with the purpose of being transformed and known as the “Medellín Health Boulevard”.

We report a 38-year-old man with a complaint of blurred vision in his right eye for the previous 5 days. He had bilateral optic disc drusen. Fluorescein angiography revealed multiple hyperfluorescent foci within temporal optic discs and temporal inferior arcade in late phase. Optical coherence tomography showed bilateral peripapillary serous detachment as well as right macular detachment. This is the first reported case of a concurrent peripapillary and macular detachment in a patient with central serous papillopathy by optic disc drusen. Central serous papillopathy is an atypical form of central serous chorioretinopathy that should be considered as a potential cause of acute loss of vision in patients with optic nerve head drusen.

The synthesis of Mg-protoporphyrin-IX from exogenous protoporphyrin-IX, in a crude plastid pellet extracted from greening cucumber cotyledons was found to require l-glutamate as a cofactor. It has now been shown that glutamate acts in the presence of contaminating mitochondria to provide an ATP regenerating system. With purified plastids, Mg chelatase is not stimulated by glutamate; instead, it requires a high concentration of ATP and is greatly stimulated by added phosphoenolpyruvate and pyruvate kinase. GTP, UTP, CTP, and ITP will not substitute for ATP. ADP in the absence of an ATP generating system is completely ineffective, whereas it is slightly inhibitory in the presence of 10 mm ATP. AMP is strongly inhibitory in the reaction; 50% inhibition is obtained at approximately 3.5 mm AMP in the presence of 10 mm ATP.
