Deliverable D6.6 “Evaluation of Life Cycle Thinking analysis (LCT)” presents a summary of the work done in task T6.4 of the InnoWEE project. The work done was focused on several aspects, relevant for life cycle thinking. It also relies on the work and results presented in other deliverables, such as D1.5, addressing the LCA of the products.

Deliverable D1.1a “Selection / identification of the typologies of building waste to be mixed to geopolymer materials” is a confidential document delivered as part of WP 1, Task 1.1: Identify, collect and categorize the typologies of building waste to be mixed to geopolymer materials and pilot production.

The study presents a preliminary assessment of Fibre Reinforced Geopolymers (FRGP) as strengthening material for masonry architectural heritages. FRGP was made of geopolymeric matrixes reinforced with mineral fibre nets. Modern and innovative materials should take into account fundamental preservation criteria when applied for restoration purposes. Consequently, interdisciplinary studies are a key factor for the evaluation of durability and compatibility requirements from a chemical, physical and mechanical standpoints of new materials for strengthening intervention. Geopolymeric matrixes have the potential to comply with those requirements, thanks to their tailored chemical and mechanical characteristics, and also to provide fire and/or heat-resistant performances much better than common organic polymeric matrixes. The applicability of geopolymers as a matrix of composite materials for structural strengthening of brick masonry was investigated with an interdisciplinary approach. Physico-chemical measurements using XRD, MAS-NMR and ESEM/EDS were performed to check the compatibility of geopolymers with both fibres and brick structures. Compression, splitting, pull-off were performed to check the main mechanical characteristic and adhesion to a clay brick substrate of the matrixes. The experimental tests are described and the main results for selecting a performing FRGP are presented and discussed in detail.

Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) materials are composed of a dry fiber grid embedded in an inorganic matrix, which may contain short fibers. These materials are particularly well-suited for the reinforcement of masonry structures due to their high compatibility with the substrate, vapor permeability and durability against environmental agents. The most important information needed for the characterization of these composite systems, for use as strengthening materials of masonry structures, are the tensile behaviour and the shear bond properties. A Round-Robin Test was organized by the RILEM Technical Committee 250-CSM and the Italian association Assocompositi in order to experimentally characterize different FRCM systems composed of PBO, carbon, glass, basalt, aramid and steel textiles embedded in cementitious or lime-based mortars. The systems were tested at different universities and research centers in Europe in order to investigate the influence of samples preparation, test set-up and instrumentation. In this paper, the experimental tests performed on Carbon-FRCM systems are described and discussed. Important aspects are analyzed herein: differences in the testing procedure and instrumentation, influence of textile geometry and mechanical properties of the constituent materials, importance of specimen preparation and curing conditions. Moreover, a comparison between tensile and shear tests is reported in order to determine a reliable procedure towards the complete characterization of an FRCM material.

The paper presents a Round Robin Test (RRT) devoted to the characterization of the shear bond performance of fibre-reinforced strengthening systems bonded with epoxy resin to brick masonry. The research was carried out by six laboratories involved in the RILEM TC 250-CSM (Composites for the Sustainable strengthening of Masonry) as a continuation and an extension of a previous RRT1 performed within the RILEM TC 223-MSC (Masonry Strengthening with Composites). In this second investigation (RRT2), the same FRP (basalt, carbon and glass textiles) and SRP (comprising steel textiles) composites were tested, but shear bond tests were carried out on both brick units and masonry prisms. The role of the bed joints of mortar was investigated in terms of shear bond strength, load–displacement response curve, axial strains profile along the bonded area and effective transfer length, for each of the four considered strengthening systems. Single lap and double lap testing setups were used and the comparison of experimental outcomes provided a validation of both results and test methods. Finally, test outcomes led to the determination of the mean and the characteristic values of the experimental-based calibration coefficient provided by design codes for the evaluation of the composite-to-substrate bond strength.
