International audience; Low-lying negative parity states in 131Xe were studied following an α-induced reaction at VECC, Kolkata. The unfavoured signature partner of νh11/2 band has been identified with firm spin-parity assignment. The S(I) value is found to be large and comparable in magnitude with that reported in 127Xe. The detailed results along with the theoretical calculations under the framework of particlerotor model will be presented.

The abundance of heavy elements above iron through the rapid neutron capture process or r-process is intimately related to the competition between neutron capture and $\beta$ decay rates, which ultimately depends on the binding energy of atomic nuclei. The well-known Bethe-Weizsacker semi-empirical mass formula describes the binding energy of ground states in nuclei with temperatures of T~0 MeV, where the nuclear symmetry energy saturates between 23-26 MeV. Here we find a larger saturation energy of ~30 MeV for nuclei at T~0.7-1.3 MeV, which corresponds to the typical temperatures where seed elements are created during the cooling down of the ejecta following neutron-star mergers and collapsars. This large symmetry energy yields a reduction of the binding energy per nucleon for neutron-rich nuclei; hence, the close in of the neutron dripline, where nuclei become unbound. This finding constrains exotic paths in the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements -- as supported by microscopic calculations of radiative neutron-capture rates -- and further supports the universal origin of heavy elements, as inferred from the abundances in extremely metal-poor stars and meteorites.

International audience; The excited states in the transitional nucleus Xe131 have been populated by using α-induced fusion-evaporation reaction and the de-exciting γ rays were detected with the Compton suppressed clover detector setup of the Indian National Gamma Array coupled to digital data acquisition system. The existing level structure of Xe131 has been significantly extended with the observation and placement of 72 new γ-ray transitions. The use of light-ion (α) beam helped to identify several new band structures in Xe131 with different quasiparticle (qp) configurations. The multipolarities of the observed γ rays have been determined on the basis of the directional correlation from oriented states ratio and polarization asymmetry measurements. The yrast negative-parity band has been confirmed up to 35/2− spin and the highly nonyrast signature partner of this band has been identified for the first time. The positive-parity band, based on the 3/2+ ground state, has been extended up to 23/2+ with the observation of a signature inversion, which signifies a pair of particle alignment around the spin of 15/2 ℏ. A dipole band, consisting of M1 transitions has been identified and assigned a 5-qp configuration. A new band structure built on a 3-qp 23/2+ state has been observed with a large signature splitting. A comparison in the isotopic and isotonic chains reveals the transitional nature of the N=77 nuclei. Total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to understand the structure of Xe131 associated with different configurations.

International audience; The decay scheme of 160Yb nucleus populated in the 148Sm(16O, 4n)160Yb reaction at 90 MeV has been studied. The gamma-coincidence data have been collected by using Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) composed of twenty Compton-suppressed Clover-germanium detectors. Compared to the prior publications, the level scheme has been significantly modified owing to the observation of triple γ-coincidences and the measurements of γ intensities, R θ (asymmetry ratio), directional correlation of oriented states and integrated polarisation directional correlation of oriented states ratios. Theoretical results relevant for the exotic shape-coexistence related to the present context are presented and discussed. They illustrate the consequences of the fact that 160Yb is expected to be a doubly-magic (Z = 70 and N = 90) tetrahedral-symmetry nucleus as predicted by other authors. The historical criteria of identification of such a symmetry in nuclei are critically revisited in the context of the actual measurement and interpretation of its results and the precise new criteria are formulated employing recent results of the Fukuoka-Strasbourg collaboration. The experimental results are interpreted and discussed in detail. Limiting values of branching ratios for transitions observed by other authors but unseen in the present work are estimated. The population criteria of the β and γ vibration bands are revisited and discussed. Although no indication of the presence of the stable tetrahedral configuration has been obtained, arguments are given towards the possible presence of the Y 32 (‘tetrahedral component’) vibrations around the ground-state equilibrium. With the improvement of the spectroscopic information provided by the new data the way is opened for designed experiment(s) based on the unambiguous identification criteria of tetrahedral symmetry presented in this article.

International audience; Nuclei around A~130 are interesting to explore the effect of the complex interplay of the single-particle and the collective degrees of freedom on the variety of nuclear shapes and to test the predictive powers of nuclear models at both low and high spins. Having both proton and neutron excitations in the same major shell, the higher spin states in this mass region originate from the coupling of unique parity h11/2 orbital with the other available orbitals. Xe isotopes are known for their shape transitions from prolate to an oblate or triaxial one with increase in neutron number. For example, oblate band is reported in 129Xe [1] whereas in 125Xe, experimental results indicate weak triaxial and a prolate shape [2]. Compared to these lower mass Xe isotopes, spectroscopic data on 131Xe are rather scarce. The previous available data on 131Xe are from -decay studies [3], (, n) [4] and (, 3n) [5] reactions. Being situated close to beta stability line, 131Xe is difficult to populate with any heavy ion induced reaction because of lack of suitable target-projectile combination. With the availability of high efficiency gamma detector array, it is now possible to obtain precise spectroscopic data of yrast and non-yrast structures using Alpha induced reaction.

The study was aimed to find out the present status and causes of fish and shellfish diversity reduction in the Rupsa River of Bangladesh. Studies were conducted for a period of 6 months from July to December 2016. Focus group discussions (FGD), questionnaire interviews (QI) and key informant interviews (KII) were done to collect appropriate data from the local fishers and resource persons. A total of 62 species of fish and shellfish from 23 families were found in the river and 9 species disappeared in last 10 years. The species availability status was remarked in three categories and obtained as 14 species were commonly available, 28 species were moderately available and 20 species were rarely available. The highest percentage of fishes was catfishes (24.19%). There was a gradual reduction in the species diversity from previous 71 species to present 62 species with 12.68% declined by last 10 years. Average fish catch per fishermen per day reduced from 8.35 kg to 2.95 kg in last 10 years. Combined effects of some manmade and environmental factors are responsible for the loss of biodiversity. Majority of the respondents (90%) agreed that two manmade factors namely overfishing and navigation are mainly responsible for the loss of fish and shellfish diversity in the river followed by use of illegal fishing gears (86%), pollution (72.5%) and urbanization (64%). During the survey, 93.25% respondents reported water depth reduction as the main environmental factor followed by siltation and sedimentation (91%), temperature (61.75%) and turbidity (56%). The present work recommends preventing water pollution, maintaining fishing gears, increasing fishers’ awareness, implementing fisheries laws and establishing fish sanctuary to conserve finfish and shellfish diversity in the river. Moreover, counter and random surveys are also recommended to crosscheck the fishes’ status and decline causes for ensuring their proper management and conservation.

Background: HIV/AIDS-related stigma can be described as a „process of devaluation‟ of people either living with or associated with HIV/AIDS. The impact of HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination as a catalyst in the spread of the epidemic has yet to be understood. Objective: To study HIV related stigma experienced by PLWHA and to study the different forms of discrimination faced by PLWHA. Methods: Every 3rd person attending the Integrated OPD was randomly selected. Total of 186 patients were included in the study over a period of 1 year. Data regarding stigma and discrimination experienced by the subjects was collected with a pretested questionnaire. Analysis was done with Microsoft Excel and Epi Info. Chi square test was applied wherever appropriate. Results: 95.12% females and 89.02% males faced discrimination in the form of segregation of food, clothing, sleeping and toilet arrangements.28.49% reported discrimination in health care setting of which 71.7% reported discrimination was more in hospital admitted patients than OPD, majority of these were discriminated by nurses-77.36% and reported difference in treatment ,60.38% reported segregation and 37.74% reported refusal of treatment on grounds of HIV.PLWHA have various HIV/AIDS related stigmas associated with negative self image, personalized stigma, concerns with public attitudes towards PLWHA and concerns regarding disclosure. Conclusion: PLWHA should have a greater involvement in their own care and treatment. Training programmes for all categories of health care providers for bringing about change in their behavior with reference to dealing with patients with HIV/ AIDS are needed. Media, community and NGO‟s can play important role.

OBJECTIVE: Pilocytic astrocytomas are extremely rare in octagenarians especially those occurring in the third ventricle. They are similar histopathologically to pilomyxoid astrocytomas but the latter are more aggressive. We report the case of an 86-year old patient presenting with confusion and lethargy secondary to a third ventricular lesion causing obstructive hydrocephalus. The lesion was approached endoscopically and sub-totally resected. Histologically the lesion was classified as a pilocytic astrocytoma with pilomyxoid features. The patient made a full recovery and did not require a shunt. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case report with pictures and video of the operative approach as well as discussion of the imaging sequences and histology, and review of the literature. RESULTS: Sub-total resection of the tumour was achieved using a monoportal image-guided endoscopic approach. Normal cerebrospinal fluid circulation was restored and a shunt was not required. Histologically, the mass was confirmed to be a pilocytic astrocytoma with pilomyxoid features. The patient made a full recovery with resolution of her symptoms. No such case has been reported in the literature to date. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of a third-ventricular pilocytic astrocytomas with pilomyxoid features in an octogenarian. The endoscopic approach in the case at hand, allowed safe direct visualisation and sub-total resection of the lesion, providing histological diagnosis to guide management and obviating the need for a shunt. The minimally invasive nature of the approach translated into full recovery, despite the age of the patient.

The excited states in the odd-$A$ $^{197}$Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the $^{197}$Au($\alpha$, 4$n$)$^{197}$Tl reaction at the beam energy of 48 MeV. The $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS and single crystal HPGe detectors. Precise spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been done through the polarization and the DCO measurements. A new band structure has been identified and the evidence for a possible intruder $\pi i_{13/2}$ state has been found for the first time. Possible configurations of the observed bands have been discussed. International audience; We report on tests of LaBr3:Ce-NaI:Tl phoswich detectors with $\gamma$-rays at various $\gamma$-ray energies, up to 22.56 MeV, using radioactive sources and nuclear reactions induced by proton beams delivered by accelerators at IFJ PAN Kraków and PLF Mumbai. Two-dimensional analysis of complex waveforms recorded with digital electronics is compared to analog discrimination methods. Both approaches allow to resolve the LaBr3:Ce and NaI:Tl signal components, and to construct clean associated $\gamma$-ray spectra. A digital algorithm to be implemented for the PARIS scintillator array is investigated.

The 1p transfer channel in the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction has been studied at E$_{lab}$ = 73, 81 and 85 MeV. The finite range distorted wave Born approximation calculations have been performed using phenomenological optical model potential to analyze the angular distributions for 3 transitions populating the 0.0, 1.78 and 4.62 MeV states of $^{28}$Si and 2 transitions populating the 2.12 and 4.44 MeV states of $^{11}$B via the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction. The spectroscopic strengths as well as spectroscopic factors have been extracted for all the five states. Cutaneous tuberculosis forms a small proportion of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The incidence of cutaneous tuberculosis has fallen from 2% to 0.15% in India whereas it is rare in developed countries. The present study is an attempt at finding out the Mycobacterium species associated with cutaneous tuberculosis. A total of 51 cases of clinically suspected cutaneous tuberculosis were studied over a period of 18 months from July 1997 to December 1998. Of these, 32 (62.75%) were Scrofuloderma cases, 12 (23.52%) cases of Lupus vulgaris and 7 (13.73%) were Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis (TBVC) cases. Twenty nine mycobacterial isolates from 51 specimens gave an isolation rate of 56.86%. These were subjected to a battery of biochemical tests for identification to species level. Twenty six out of 29 isolates were identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, two were identified as Mycobacterium Scrofulaceum and one Mycobacterium avium complex was isolated. Sixteen Mycobacterial isolates were recovered from Scrofuloderma cases, 9 were isolated from Lupus vulgaris and 4 from TBVC cases. The three atypical mycobacterial isolates were recovered from Scrofuloderma cases. Though Mycobacterium tuberculosis was the most common isolate, Mycobacterium scrofulaceum and Mycobacterium avium complex were also isolated in the present study.

Various clinical specimens were processed to find the prevalence rate of enterococci and to identify the species of clinical isolates of enterococci. Screening of various clinical specimens revealed that enterococci were prevalent in 22.19% of the total specimens, with Foley′s catheters and burn wounds to be the major site of isolation. High rate of colonization was noted as opposed to infection. Conventional test scheme proposed by Facklam and Collins were successfully used to speciate enterococcal strains. Seven species of enterococci were identified in the study from a set of 202 cultures, with E.faecalis (49.50%) and E. faecium (35.64%) predominating. E. avium (9.40%), E.hirae (2.47%), E.raffinosus (1.98%) and one isolate each of E.gallinarum and E. casseliflavus were the other members of Enterococcus species identified. Urinary tract infection (UTI) by enterococci due to catherisation was found in 8.92% of the patients and is probably the result of high rate of colonization of Foley′s catheters and use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Pathogenicity of 19 isolates of T.vaginalis obtained from vaginal specimens were studied in the murine model by intraperitoneal route. Sixteen isolates were recovered from the females with various clinical conditions and 3 isolates were from normal healthy females. Pathogenicity level of these isolates were studied by inoculating 5 mice per isolates through intraperitoneal route and the animals were sacrificed on tenth day post-inoculation. In general, all the isolates recovered produced infection in mice. On comparison with the reference strain obtained from Hoechst India Ltd., seven isolates recovered from symptomatic cases and one strain from healthy females produced severe infection in mice. Though variation in pathogenicity level was observed among the isolates, a definite correlation between clinical picture in natural host and pathogenicity in mice was not observed.

CD4 and CD8 counts are widely used prognostic markers to assess the degree of immune impairment in HIV seropositive individuals and to monitor anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Pregnancy is considered as a physiologically immunocompromised state, hence alterations in T lymphocyte subsets may occur during pregnancy. There is a need to establish base-line values of these counts, especially in healthy pregnant women. One hundred healthy HIV seronegative pregnant women (mean age 22.5 +/- 2.99 yr) in their third trimester of pregnancy and 30 non-pregnant women (mean age 22.7 +/- 3.01 yr) were tested for their CD4 and CDS counts. In pregnant women, the CD4 and CD8 cell counts/microl were 764 +/- 249 and 547 +/- 196 and the CD4 and CD8 per cent were 56.49 +/- 8.3 and 38.03 +/- 7.2 respectively. In the non-pregnant women CD4 and CD8 counts/microl were 965 +/- 267 and 639 +/- 211 whereas the CD4 and CD8 per cent were 55.27 +/- 5.99 and 36.17 +/- 6.44 respectively. Absolute counts were significantly lower (P0.05) in the pregnant group as compared to the controls. A wide variation was seen in the CD4 and CD8 counts in both the groups. However, the variations in the mean CD4 and CD8 per cent were much smaller. Thus CD4 and CD8 per cent may be considered as a useful indicator of immune function rather than absolute counts, in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Previous trials of interferon beta in multiple sclerosis (MS) have shown efficacy, but the degree of clinical benefit remains uncertain, and the optimum dose is not known. We undertook a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in relapsing/remitting MS to investigate the effects of subcutaneous interferon beta-1a. METHODS: 560 patients with Kurtzke expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scores of 0-5.0, from 22 centres in nine countries, were randomly assigned subcutaneous recombinant interferon beta-1a 22 microg (n=189), or 44 microg (n=184), or placebo (n=187) three times a week for 2 years. Neurological examinations were done every 3 months. All patients had MRI twice yearly and 205 had monthly scans in the first 9 months of treatment. Analysis was by intention to treat. FINDINGS: Clinical data on 533 (95%) patients were available at 2 years. The relapse rate was significantly lower at 1 and 2 years with both doses of interferon beta-1a than with placebo (mean number per patient 1.82 for 22 microg group, 1.73 for 44 microg group vs 2.56 for placebo group: risk reductions 27% [95% CI 14-39] and 33 [21-44]). Trichomonas vaginalis is a frequently encountered genital pathogen in both males and females. In females, vaginitis due to this parasite is one of the most common manifestation. The indirect fluorescent technique (IFA) test was carried out to detect antitrichomonal antibodies in 370 female patients using whole cell antigen. Seventy one (19.18%) gave positive reaction for either of the class IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies. The level of the IgG class antibodies was found to be higher i.e. 58 (81.69%) than IgM 11 (15.27%) antibodies, which may be suggestive of past infection or a prolonged manifestation by the organisms.

In this paper, a class of problems involving space constrained loading on thin beams with large deflections is considered. The loading is such that, the locus of the force application point moves along an arbitrarily predefined path, fixed in space. Both linear elastic as well as elastic-perfectly plastic materials are considered. A simplification is realized using the moment-curvature relationship directly. The governing equation obtained is highly non-linear owing to inclusion of both material and geometric non-linearity. A general algorithm is described to solve the governing equation using an incremental formulation coupled with Runge Kutta 4th order initial value explicit solver. Additionally, the presented method is capable of handling unloading and reverse loading conditions. An example problem where the load application point locus is an inclined straight line is solved to demonstrate the performance of the method. It is found that, the force response due to the inclined locus is stiffer than the vertical locus. This response is akin to dry friction condition on a vertical locus case.
