Co3O4 nanoparticles were supported on different TiO2 polymorphs, namely, rutile, anatase, and a 15 : 85 mixture of rutile and anatase (also known as P25), via incipient wetness impregnation. The Co3O4/TiO2 catalysts were evaluated in the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PrOx) in a H2-rich gas environment and characterised in situ using PXRD and magnetometry. Our results show that supporting Co3O4 on P25 resulted in better catalytic performance, that is, a higher maximum CO conversion to CO2 of 72.7% at 200 °C was achieved than on rutile (60.7%) and anatase (51.5%). However, the degree of reduction (DoR) of Co3O4 to Co0 was highest on P25 (91.9% at 450 °C), with no CoTiO3 detected in the spent catalyst. The DoR of Co3O4 was lowest on anatase (76.4%), with the presence of TixOy-encapsulated CoOx nanoparticles and bulk CoTiO3 (13.8%) also confirmed in the spent catalyst. Relatively low amounts of CoTiO3 (8.9%) were detected in the spent rutile-supported catalyst, while a higher DoR (85.9%) was reached under reaction conditions. The Co0 nanoparticles formed on P25 and rutile existed in the fcc and hcp crystal phases, while only fcc Co0 was detected on anatase. Furthermore, undesired CH4 formation took place over the Co0 present in the P25- and rutile-supported catalysts, while CH4 was not formed over the Co0 on anatase possibly due to encapsulation by TixOy species. For the first time, this study revealed the influence of different TiO2 polymorphs (used as catalyst supports) on the chemical and crystal phase transformations of Co3O4, which in turn affect its activity and selectivity during CO-PrOx.

This study addresses the relationship between human factors (HF) related quality deficits in manufacturing and work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) risk factors in production staff. A recent systematic review identified 60 HF-related quality risk factors (QRFs) in manufacturing related to product, process and workstation design stages. We investigate the extent to which these identified QRFs are also WMSD risk factors. Each QRF was examined for its relationship with WMSD using a 0 (no relationship) to 10 (strong relationship) scale rubric. The authors rated each QRF separately and then discussed and adjusted their ratings in a review session. Results showed that average median ratings were the highest for QRFs related to product design (8/10), intermediate for QRFs related to workstation design (7/10) and the lowest for QRFs related to process design (5/10). This emphasises the significant role of HF in system design in reducing both quality deficits and risk of developing WMSDs for manufacturing personnel.

The timing of life events (phenology) can be influenced by climate. Studies from around the world tell us that climate cues and species' responses can vary greatly. If variation in climate effects on phenology is strong within a single ecosystem, climate change could lead to ecological disruption, but detailed data from diverse taxa within a single ecosystem are rare. We collated first sighting and median activity within a high-elevation environment for plants, insects, birds, mammals and an amphibian across 45 years (1975–2020). We related 10 812 phenological events to climate data to determine the relative importance of climate effects on species’ phenologies. We demonstrate significant variation in climate-phenology linkage across taxa in a single ecosystem. Both current and prior climate predicted changes in phenology. Taxa responded to some cues similarly, such as snowmelt date and spring temperatures; other cues affected phenology differently. For example, prior summer precipitation had no effect on most plants, delayed first activity of some insects, but advanced activity of the amphibian, some mammals, and birds. Comparing phenological responses of taxa at a single location, we find that important cues often differ among taxa, suggesting that changes to climate may disrupt synchrony of timing among taxa.

Purpose To characterize intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction, effect duration, and side effect profile of repeat selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) used as primary stand-alone treatment for open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The secondary aim was to investigate covariates associated with treatment response to SLT. Design Retrospective chart review. Participants A total of 52 patients with treatment-naive OAG who received 3 installments of 3600 SLT as stand-alone glaucoma therapy. When both eyes met the inclusion criteria, only right eye data were used for analysis. Methods The study was conducted in a single specialist practice. First, second, and third SLT (SLT1, SLT2, SLT3, respectively) treatments were compared for IOP reduction and effect duration. Eyes were classified as “treatment responders” if they had ≥20% IOP reduction 4 to 8 weeks post-SLT compared with baseline. Effect duration was the interval between SLT and the time point at which the surgeon decided inadequate IOP control necessitated repeat SLT. Individuals were excluded if they underwent intraocular surgery during the study period or received treatment with adjunctive ocular hypotensive medications. Main Outcome Measures Reduction in IOP post-SLT and effect duration between treatments. Results Mean age at SLT1 was 58 years; 50% were male, and 92% were phakic. The SLT1 and SLT3 both resulted in mean 27% IOP reduction at 4 to 8 weeks, whereas SLT2 led to 26% IOP reduction. Response rate (≥20% IOP reduction at 4–8 weeks) was 79% for SLT1, 73% for SLT2, and 81% for SLT3, but the difference was not statistically significant. Response to repeat SLT was not significantly associated with previous SLT outcome. Effect duration was 22.2 months, 33.8 months, and 28.9 months after SLT1, SLT2, and SLT3, respectively. Effect duration was significantly longer after SLT2 (P = 0.0006) and SLT3 (P = 0.0444) compared with SLT1. There was no significant association between SLT response and gender, lens status, or OAG subtype. Conclusions For primary stand-alone treatment in OAG, initial and repeat SLTs produced comparable percentage IOP reduction, but repeat SLTs had longer effect duration. Intraocular pressure response to SLT was not predictive of the IOP response to subsequent, repeat SLT treatment.

Roles and Relationships for Making Ergonomics Change: Results of a 2-Day focus

We have extended the research methods used in epidemiological studies of low back pain into assessment software that is suitable for use by industrial personnel. The system we are developing extends the capability of current biomechanical modelling approaches in two ways. We now have the ability to calculate shift-long cumulative loading (load integrals) on the spine as well the peak hand forces and peak spine load forces. We can also use epidemiological evidence to provide insight into low back injury risk in the presence of multiple, proven injury risk factors. This decision support aspect of the tool helps users apply current scientific evidence to make better decisions about job design and ergonomic program performance in industrial settings. Establishing a new ergonomics process in a company poses a special challenge to the ergonomics practitioner. The aim of this paper is to identify barriers and assists to the initiation of an ergonomics process and to raise awareness of these issues for both practitioners and researchers trying to initiate ergonomics intervention activities. We report on results from focus group sessions held with industrial personnel focussing on the initiation of ergonomics processes. Two cases of ergonomics process initiation are then presented and interpreted in light of these findings. Critical aspects for start up may include the point of entry into the organisation as well as both the base of support for ergonomics and the chain of authority in the organisation. Awareness of these factors will allow a growth strategy to be applied so that credibility, support, and activity expand from small but visible first ergonomics initiatives. DNA replication is a vulnerable time for genome stability maintenance. Intrinsic stressors, as well as oncogenic stress, can challenge replication by fostering conflicts with transcription and stabilizing DNA:RNA hybrids. RAD18 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase for PCNA that is involved in coordinating DNA damage tolerance pathways to preserve genome stability during replication. In this study, we show that RAD18 deficient cells have higher levels of transcription-replication conflicts and accumulate DNA:RNA hybrids that induce DNA double strand breaks and replication stress. We find that these effects are driven in part by failure to recruit the Fanconi Anemia protein FANCD2 at difficult to replicate and R-loop prone genomic sites. While RAD18 is important for FANCD2 localization after splicing inhibition or aphidicolin treatment, it is comparatively less important during interstrand crosslink repair. Thus, we highlight a RAD18 dependent pathway promoting FANCD2-mediated suppression of R-loops and transcription-replication conflicts.AUTHOR SUMMARYGenome instability, a state in which cells acquire mutations more quickly, drives cancer initiation and progression. DNA is normally protected from such mutations by a host of specialized factors that recognize and repair potentially damaging circumstances. Here we describe under-appreciated links between a protein called RAD18, which recognizes potentially damaging stress, and a phenomenon called a transcription-replication conflict. If not repaired such conflicts can lead to DNA breaks. We find that RAD18 plays an important role in recruiting another repair protein called FANCD2 to sites of transcription-replication conflicts. By doing so, RAD18 protects the human genome from damage when it is faced with stresses such as those seen in cancer cells. This work provides new insight to how the FANCD2 protein is brought to potentially damaging sites in our genomes.

The discovery of new materials for efficient transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into desired fuel can revolutionize large-scale renewable energy storage and mitigate environmental damage due to carbon emissions. In this work, we discovered an operando generated stable Ni–In kinetic phase that selectively converts CO2 to methanol (CTM) at low pressure compared to the state-of-the-art materials. The catalytic nature of a well-known methanation catalyst, nickel, has been tuned with the introduction of inactive indium, which enhances the CTM process. The remarkable change in the mechanistic pathways toward methanol production has been mapped by operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis, corroborated by first-principles calculations. The ordered arrangement and pronounced electronegativity difference between metals are attributed to the complete shift in mechanism. The approach and findings of this work provide a unique advance toward the next-generation catalyst discovery for going beyond the state-of-the-art in CO2 reduction technologies.

The RIETE Investigators., [Background] The optimal therapy of patients with acute subsegmental pulmonary embolism (PE) is controversial., [Methods] We used the RIETE (Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) database to compare the rate of symptomatic PE recurrences during anticoagulation in patients with subsegmental, segmental, or more central PEs. [Results] Among 15 963 patients with a first episode of symptomatic PE, 834 (5.2%) had subsegmental PE, 3797 (24%) segmental, and 11 332 (71%) more central PE. Most patients in all subgroups received initial therapy with low‐molecular‐weight heparin, and then most switched to vitamin K antagonists. Median duration of therapy was 179, 185, and 204 days, respectively. During anticoagulation, 183 patients developed PE recurrences, 131 developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT), 543 bled, and 1718 died (fatal PE, 135). The rate of PE recurrences was twofold higher in patients with subsegmental PE than in those with segmental (hazard ratio [HR], 2.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16‐3.85) or more central PE (HR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.12‐3.13). On multivariable analysis, patients with subsegmental PE had a higher risk for PE recurrences than those with central PE (adjusted HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.02‐3.03). After stratifying patients with subsegmental PE according to ultrasound imaging in the lower limbs, the rate of PE recurrences was similar in patients with DVT, in patients without DVT, and in those with no ultrasound imaging. [Conclusions] Our study reveals that the risk for PE recurrences in patients with segmental PE is not lower than in those with more central PE, thus suggesting that the risk of PE recurrences is not influenced by the anatomic location of PE.

The replacement of HgCl2/C with Au/C as a catalyst for acetylene hydrochlorination represents a significant reduction in the environmental impact of this industrial process. Under reaction conditions atomically dispersed cationic Au species are the catalytic active site, representing a large-scale application of heterogeneous single-site catalysts. While the metal nuclearity and oxidation state under operating conditions has been investigated in catalysts prepared from aqua regia and thiosulphate, limited studies have focused on the ligand environment surrounding the metal centre. We now report K-edge soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the Cl and S ligand species used to stabilise these isolated cationic Au centres in the harsh reaction conditions. We demonstrate the presence of three distinct Cl species in the materials; inorganic Cl−, Au–Cl, and C–Cl and how these species evolve during reaction. Direct evidence of Au–S interactions is confirmed in catalysts prepared using thiosulfate precursors which show high stability towards reduction to inactive metal nanoparticles. This stability was clear during gas switching experiments, where exposure to C2H2 alone did not dramatically alter the Au electronic structure and consequently did not deactivate the thiosulfate catalyst., In situ chlorine and sulphur XAS shows a dynamic ligand environment around cationic Au single-sites during acetylene hydrochlorination.

Localised prostate cancer is commonly treated with external beam radiotherapy and moderate hypofractionation is non-inferior to longer schedules. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) allows shorter treatment courses without impacting acute toxicity. We report 2-year toxicity findings from PACE-B, a randomised trial of conventionally fractionated or moderately hypofractionated radiotherapy versus SBRT.PACE is an open-label, multicohort, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial conducted at 35 hospitals in the UK, Ireland, and Canada. In PACE-B, men aged 18 years and older with a WHO performance status 0-2 and low-risk or intermediate-risk histologically-confirmed prostate adenocarcinoma (Gleason 4 + 3 excluded) were randomly allocated (1:1) by computerised central randomisation with permuted blocks (size four and six), stratified by centre and risk group to control radiotherapy (CRT; 78 Gy in 39 fractions over 7·8 weeks or, following protocol amendment on March 24, 2016, 62 Gy in 20 fractions over 4 weeks) or SBRT (36·25 Gy in five fractions over 1-2 weeks). Androgen deprivation was not permitted. Co-primary outcomes for this toxicity analysis were Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) grade 2 or worse gastrointestinal and genitourinary toxicity at 24 months after radiotherapy. Analysis was by treatment received and included all patients with at least one fraction of study treatment assessed for late toxicity. Recruitment is complete. Follow-up for oncological outcomes continues. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01584258.We enrolled and randomly assigned 874 men between Aug 7, 2012, and Jan 4, 2018 (441 to CRT and 433 to SBRT). In this analysis, 430 patients were analysed in the CRT group and 414 in the SBRT group; a total of 844 (97%) of 874 randomly assigned patients. At 24 months, RTOG grade 2 or worse genitourinary toxicity was seen in eight (2%) of 381 participants assigned to CRT and 13 (3%) of 384 participants assigned to SBRT (absolute difference 1·3% [95% CI -1·3 to 4·0]; p=0·39); RTOG grade 2 or worse gastrointestinal toxicity was seen in 11 (3%) of 382 participants in the CRT group versus six (2%) of 384 participants in the SBRT group (absolute difference -1·3% [95% CI -3·9 to 1·1]; p=0·32). No serious adverse events (defined as RTOG grade 4 or worse) or treatment-related deaths were reported within the analysis timeframe.In the PACE-B trial, 2-year RTOG toxicity rates were similar for five fraction SBRT and conventional schedules of radiotherapy. Prostate SBRT was found to be safe and associated with low rates of side-effects. Biochemical outcomes are awaited.Accuray.

Optical mapping of animal models is a widely used technique in pre-clinical cardiac research. It has several advantages over other methods, including higher spatial resolution, contactless recording and direct visualisation of action potentials and calcium transients. Optical mapping enables simultaneous study of action potential and calcium transient morphology, conduction dynamics, regional heterogeneity, restitution and arrhythmogenesis. In this dataset, we have optically mapped Langendorff perfused isolated whole hearts (mouse and guinea pig) and superfused isolated atria (mouse). Raw datasets (consisting of over 400 files) can be combined with open-source software for processing and analysis. We have generated a comprehensive post-processed dataset characterising the baseline cardiac electrophysiology in these widely used pre-clinical models. This dataset also provides reference information detailing the effect of heart rate, clinically used anti-arrhythmic drugs, ischaemia-reperfusion and sympathetic nervous stimulation on cardiac electrophysiology. The effects of these interventions can be studied in a global or regional manner, enabling new insights into the prevention and initiation of arrhythmia.

We present a comparative density functional theory investigation of the furfural (Ff) molecule on the low index Ni, Pd and Pt surfaces to understand its geometrical and electronic properties to gain mechanistic insights into the experimentally measured catalytic reactivities of these metal catalysts. We show that the number of metal d- states, which hybridize with the nearest C and O p -orbitals of the Ff molecule, can be used to explain the stability of the Ff molecule on these surfaces. We find that the hybridization between atoms with higher electronegativity and the metal d- states plays a crucial role in determining the stability of these systems. Furthermore, we also find electron transfer from metal to the Ff molecule on the Ni and Pd surfaces, with a reverse process occurring on the Pt surface.

Brokers are supposed to be independent to represent the insured, rather than the insurer; yet, the law in many states still requires insurers to appoint a broker as an agent actually to transact insurance with the insurer. This dual agency creates well-known conflicts and burdens. We contend that the requirement that insurers appoint agents in each state with the department of insurance (DOI) has outlived its usefulness and should be abolished for independent insurance brokers, at least those of a minimum size. Insurers with exclusive agents should retain the appointment requirement. Protection of the insured against rogue brokers is not accomplished by this appointment requirement. Protection against rogue brokers is already achieved by malpractice claims and malpractice insurance, which can be strengthened by requirements for higher malpractice insurance limits. Removing the appointment for brokers will further the goals of simplified regulatory burdens, business efficiency, and customer protection by removing one conflict of interest of the dual agency situation.

Maternal characteristics, social dynamics, and environmental factors can all influence reproduction and survival and shape trade-offs that might arise between these components of fitness. Short-lived mammals like the golden-mantled ground squirrel (GMGS; Callospermophilus lateralis) tend to maximize effort toward current reproduction at the expense of survival but may be complicated by other aspects of the species' life history and environment. Here, we use 25years of data (1995-2020) collected from a population of GMGS at the Rocky Mountain Biological Research Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado, to test the effect of several maternal characteristics (e.g., age, experience, and timing of litter emergence), social context (e.g., litter sex ratio and kin density), and environmental context (e.g., date of bare ground and length of vegetative growing season) on survival of reproductive female GMGS using Cox proportional hazard models. Our results indicated that social dynamics (i.e., density) and environmental conditions (i.e., standardized first day of permanent snow cover and length of growing season) explained significant variation in annual maternal survival, while maternal characteristics did not. A higher density of related breeding females and the total number of females (both related and unrelated to the focal mother) were associated with an increase in the mortality hazard. A later standardized date of the first day of permanent snow cover and a shorter growing season both reduced the maternal mortality hazard. Together, our results suggest that factors extrinsic to the squirrels affect maternal survival and thus may also influence local population growth and dynamics in GMGS and other short-lived, territorial mammal species.

The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in older people is increasing due to population aging and availability of effective disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). Treating older people with MS is complicated by age-related and MS-related comorbidities, immunologic effects of prior DMTs, and immunosenescence. Teriflunomide is a once-daily oral immunomodulator that has demonstrated efficacy and acceptable safety in clinical trials of adults with relapsing forms of MS (RMS). However, there are limited clinical trial and real-world data regarding teriflunomide use in people with MS aged55 years. We analyzed real-world data to assess the effectiveness and safety of teriflunomide in older people with RMS who had switched to this agent from other DMTs.People with RMS (relapsing remitting and active secondary progressive MS) aged ≥55 years who had switched from other DMTs to teriflunomide (7 mg or 14 mg) for ≥1 year were identified retrospectively by chart review at four sites in the United States. Data were extracted from medical records from 1 year pre-index to 2 years post-index (index defined as the teriflunomide start date). Assessments of effectiveness included annualized relapse rate (ARR), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes. Assessments of safety included lymphocyte counts, infections, and malignancies. We examined the effectiveness outcomes and lymphocyte counts within sub-groups defined by age (55-64, ≥65 years), sex, MS type, and prior route of DMT administration (oral, injectable, infusible).In total, 182 patients with RMS aged ≥55 years who switched from other DMTs to teriflunomide were identified (mean [SD] age: 62.5 [5.4] years). Mean ARR decreased from the start of teriflunomide treatment (mean [SD]: 0.43 [0.61]) to year 1 post-index (0.13 [0.65]) and year 2 post-index (0.05 [0.28]). Mean EDSS score remained unchanged from index (mean [SD]: 4.5 [1.8]) to 1 year post-treatment (4.5 [1.8]) and increased slightly at 2 years post-treatment (4.7 [1.7]). MRI scans from index and years 1 and 2 post-index compared with scans from the previous year indicated that most patients had stable or improved MRI outcomes at index (87.7%) and remained stable or improved at years 1 (96.0%) and 2 (93.6%). Lymphopenia decreased at years 1 (21.4%) and 2 post-index (14.8%, compared to index (23.5%). By 1 year post-index, fewer patients had grade 3 or 4 lymphopenia, and at 2 years post-index, there were no patients with grade 3 or 4 lymphopenia. Infection incidence was low (n = 40, 22.0%) and none were related to teriflunomide. The decreases in lymphopenia were driven by decreases among people who switched from a prior oral DMT; there were no notable differences in lymphopenia across the other sub-groups examined. ARR, EDSS score, and MRI outcomes across all sub-groups were similar to the results of the overall population.Our multicenter, longitudinal, retrospective study demonstrated that patients with RMS aged 55 or older switching to teriflunomide from other DMTs had significantly improved ARR, stable disability, and stable or improved MRI over up to 2 years' follow up. Safety results were acceptable with fewer patients exhibiting lymphopenia at years 1 and 2 post-index.

We have studied the effect of different supports (CeO2, ZrO2, SiC, SiO2 and Al2O3) on the catalytic performance and phase stability of Co3O4 nanoparticles during the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PrOx) under different H2-rich gas environments and temperatures. Our results show that Co3O4/ZrO2 has superior CO oxidation activity, but transforms to Co0 and consequently forms CH4 at relatively low temperatures. The least reduced and least methanation active catalyst (Co3O4/Al2O3) also exhibits the lowest CO oxidation activity. Co-feeding H2O and CO2 suppresses CO oxidation over Co3O4/ZrO2 and Co3O4/SiC, but also suppresses Co0 and CH4 formation. In conclusion, weak nanoparticle-support interactions (as in Co3O4/ZrO2) favour high CO oxidation activity possibly via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. However, stronger interactions (as in Co3O4/Al2O3) help minimise Co0 and CH4 formation. Therefore, this work reveals the bi-functional role required of supports used in CO-PrOx, i.e., to enhance catalytic performance and improve the phase stability of Co3O4.

Weaving the future of the field of comparative psychology is dependent on the career advancement of early-career scientists. Despite concerted efforts to increase diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, scholars from marginalized groups are disproportionately underrepresented in the field-especially at advanced career stages. New approaches to sponsorship, mentoring, and community building are necessary to retain talent from marginalized communities and to create a culture and a system where all individuals can thrive. We describe the unique and supportive role of senior women scientists united through a professional society in initiating peer coaching circles to facilitate the success of a diverse cohort of early-career women scientists. We offer our experiences with the Weaving the Future of Animal Behavior program as a case study that illustrates the cascading impacts of professional societies investing in the success and career development of marginalized scholars. We focus on our peer coaching circle experience and share the products and outcomes after 2 years of meeting. Peer coaching transformed us from a group of loosely organized, anxious individuals into a collective of empowered agents of change with an enhanced sense of belonging. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mass spectrometry (MS) provide complementary information on the catalyst structure, surface reaction mechanisms and activity relationships. The powerful combination of the techniques has been the driving force to design and engineer suitable spectroscopic operando reactors that can mitigate limitations inherent to conventional reaction cells and facilitate experiments under kinetic regimes. Microreactors have recently emerged as effective spectroscopic operando cells due to their plug-flow type operation with no dead volume and negligible mass and heat transfer resistances. Here we present a novel microfabricated reactor that can be used for both operando XAS and DRIFTS studies. The reactor has a glass-silicon-glass sandwich-like structure with a reaction channel (3000 μm × 600 μm; width × depth) packed with a catalyst bed (ca. 25 mg) and placed sideways to the X-ray beam, while the infrared beam illuminates the catalyst bed from the top. The outlet of the reactor is connected to MS for continuous monitoring of the reactor effluent. The feasibility of the microreactor is demonstrated by conducting two reactions: i) combustion of methane over 2 wt% Pd/Al2O3 studied by operando XAS at the Pd K-edge and ii) CO oxidation over 1 wt% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst studied by operando DRIFTS. The former shows that palladium is in an oxidised state at all studied temperatures, 250, 300, 350, 400 °C and the latter shows the presence of linearly adsorbed CO on the platinum surface. Furthermore, temperature-resolved reduction of palladium catalyst with methane and CO oxidation over platinum catalyst are also studied. Based on these results, the catalyst structure and surface reaction dynamics are discussed, which demonstrate not only the applicability and versatility of the microreactor for combined operando XAS and DRIFTS studies, but also illustrate the unique advantages of the microreactor for high space velocity and transient response experiments.

We have made high surface area catalysts for the selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. This is done in two ways-(i) by doping haematite with Al ions, to increase the surface area of the material, but which itself is unselective and (ii) by surface coating with Mo which induces high selectivity. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of methanol shows little difference in surface chemistry of the doped haematite from the undoped material, with the main products being CO2 and CO, but shifted to somewhat higher desorption temperature. However, when Mo is dosed onto the haematite surface, the chemistry changes completely to show mainly the selective product, formaldehyde, with no CO2 production, and this is little changed up to 10% Al loading. But at 15 wt% Al, the chemistry changes to indicate the presence of a strongly acidic function at the surface, with additional dimethyl ether and CO/CO2 production characteristic of the presence of alumina. Structurally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows little change over the range 0-20% Al doping, except for some small lattice contraction, while the surface area increases from around 20 to 100 m2 g-1. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) it is clear that, at 5% loading, the Al is incorporated into the Fe2O3 corundum lattice, which has the same structure as α-alumina. By 10% loading then it appears that the alumina starts to nano-crystallise within the haematite lattice into the γ form. At higher loadings, there is evidence of phase separation into separate Al-doped haematite and γ-alumina. If we add 1 monolayer equivalent of Mo to the surface there is already high selectivity to formaldehyde, but little change in structure, because that monolayer is isolated at the surface. However, when three monolayers equivalent of Mo is added, we then see aluminium molybdate type signatures in the XANES spectra at 5% Al loading and above. These appear to be in a sub-surface layer with Fe molybdate, which we interpret as due to Al substitution into ferric molybdate layers immediately beneath the topmost surface layer of molybdena. It seems like the separate γ-alumina phase is not covered by molybdena and is responsible for the appearance of the acid function products in the TPD.

Mechanochemistry offers a solventless, ‘waste free’ route to preparing metal oxide catalysts, however, there is limited information on the chemical steps involved. In this work, the perovskite LaMnO3 has been successfully synthesized via mechanochemistry from metal oxide powders, La2O3 and Mn2O3, at room temperature, using a planetary ball mill. Separate ex situ ‘time slices’ were taken during the milling procedure to provide insights into the underlying chemistry. The crystalline material was assessed using XRD, which identified 100% perovskite phase after 3 h of milling. Conversely, characterization by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at both the Mn K-edge and La L3-edge provides a very different picture. The XAS data shows that there are significant structural alterations as early as 30 min of milling, with the La precursor dispersed over Mn2O3. Increasing milling time then allows for mechanical activation of both precursors and the formation of powdered LaMnO3, with no calcination step required. The XAS highlights that there is a significant amount of amorphous, oxygen deficient, content even when XRD has identified 100% perovskite phase. The samples were tested for the decomposition of the environmental pollutant N2O; at a milling time of 3 h, the LaMnO3 catalyst displays a much early onset production of N2 compared to a traditional sol–gel synthesized LaMnO3, resulting from increased oxygen deficiency at the surface, confirmed by XPS and STEM-EELS. This is an encouraging sign that mechanochemical routes can be harnessed to provide a sustainable route to preparing mixed metal oxide catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance.

Interspecific hybridization is recognized as an important process in the evolutionary dynamics of both speciation and the reversal of speciation. However, our understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of hybridization that erode versus promote species boundaries is incomplete. The endangered, endemic koloa maoli (or Hawaiian duck, Anas wyvilliana) is thought to be threatened with genetic extinction through ongoing hybridization with an introduced congener, the feral mallard (A. platyrhynchos). We investigated spatial and temporal variation in hybrid prevalence in populations throughout the main Hawaiian Islands, using genomic data to characterize population structure of koloa, quantify the extent of hybridization, and compare hybrid proportions over time. To accomplish this, we genotyped 3,308 double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA (ddRAD) loci in 425 putative koloa, mallards, and hybrids from populations across the main Hawaiian Islands. We found that despite a population decline in the last century, koloa genetic diversity is high. There were few hybrids on the island of Kaua'i, home to the largest population of koloa. By contrast, we report that sampled populations outside of Kaua'i can now be characterized as hybrid swarms, in that all individuals sampled were of mixed koloa × mallard ancestry. Further, there is some evidence that these swarms are stable over time. These findings demonstrate spatial variation in the extent and consequences of interspecific hybridization, and highlight how islands or island-like systems with small population sizes may be especially prone to genetic extinction when met with a congener that is not reproductively isolated.

R loops are three-stranded nucleic acid structures consisting of an RNA molecule that has invaded duplex DNA. R-loop structures have normal functions in regulating gene expression, class-switch recombination, telomere stability, and mitochondrial DNA replication. However, unscheduled R-loop accumulation is a driver of DNA replication stress and genome instability. Meanwhile, R loops and associated transcription-replication conflicts have been observed in cells that have lost tumor-suppressor genes or have activated oncogenes. While ectopic R loops can both disrupt epigenetic states, and promote genome instability, in most cases the hinted-at direct links between R loops and cancer development are lacking. Here, we review the possible influences of altered R-loop stability and metabolism on cancer development and discuss how R-loop accumulation might be exploited to benefit cancer patients.

In hibernating squirrels, the amount of energy stored as fat may influence several important demographic traits, but is difficult to quantify in living animals. Thus, several non-destructive indices of body condition are used, including simple indices that use body mass and scaled indices that correct body mass for structural size. However, the accuracy of these indices for hibernating squirrels is poorly known. We used measurements of total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC) from adult female Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels (Callospermophilus lateralis) to characterize body composition (lean mass versusfat mass) and condition (fat stores) at multiple stages in the circannual cycle. Body mass explained a high proportion of the variation in fat mass during the emergence and pre-hibernation stages, but less during the reproduction stage. Contrary to expectation, correcting for structural size did not markedly improve the condition index. Our results suggest that body mass is a good estimate of body condition during the periods of emergence and pre-hibernation fattening, and therefore may be useful to predict important components of fitness such as reproductive success and overwinter survival.

Background/AimsTo determine if selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is superior to topical medication as a first-line treatment for glaucoma on quality of life (QoL) and clinical outcomes.MethodsIn this international, longitudinal, multisite randomised controlled trial, treatment naïve mild-to-moderate primary open angle or exfoliation glaucoma patients were randomised 1:1 to SLT or topical medication. Glaucoma-specific QoL (primary outcome) was measured using the Glaucoma Outcomes Assessment Tool (GOAT; 342 items, 12 domains). Secondary outcomes included rate of successful intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction (>25% reduction from baseline) and presence of ocular surface disease including conjunctival hyperaemia and eyelid erythema. Our intention-to-treat analysis was performed at months 12 and 24.ResultsOf 167 enrolled patients, 83 and 84 were randomised to SLT and topical medication, respectively; and 145 (n=75 SLT, n=70 medication) completed 24-month follow-up. While both treatment arms achieved significant within-group gains in GOAT outcomes at both endpoints, SLT patients reported a greater between-group improvement in ‘social well-being’ compared with medication patients (mean±SE=0.28±0.13; p=0.034) at 24 months. At month 24, the rate of successful IOP reduction was 18.6% (95% CI 3.0% to 34.3%, p=0.022) higher (absolute difference) in the medication compared with SLT group. More individuals in the medication group had conjunctival hyperaemia and eyelid erythema compared with SLT at 24 months.ConclusionOverall, we did not find evidence that SLT was superior to medication in improving glaucoma-specific QoL. While we found superior IOP reduction in the medication arm, eyelid erythema and conjunctival hyperaemia were more prevalent in these patients compared with the SLT group.Trial registrationACTRN12611000720910.

We report measurements of the parity-conserving beam-normal single-spin elastic scattering asymmetries $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and $^{27}$Al, obtained with an electron beam polarized transverse to its momentum direction. These measurements add an additional kinematic point to a series of previous measurements of $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and provide a first measurement on $^{27}$Al. The experiment utilized the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab with a beam energy of 1.158 GeV. The average lab scattering angle for both targets was 7.7 degrees, and the average $Q^2$ for both targets was 0.02437 GeV$^2$ (Q=0.1561 GeV). The asymmetries are $B_n$ = -10.68 $\pm$ 0.90 stat) $\pm$ 0.57 (syst) ppm for $^{12}$C and $B_n$ = -12.16 $\pm$ 0.58 (stat) $\pm$ 0.62 (syst) ppm for $^{27}$Al. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions, and are compared to existing data. When scaled by Z/A, the Q-dependence of all the far-forward angle (theta < 10 degrees) data from $^{1}$H to $^{27}$Al can be described by the same slope out to $Q \approx 0.35$ GeV. Larger-angle data from other experiments in the same Q range are consistent with a slope about twice as steep.

Modern genetic parentage methods reveal that alternative reproductive strategies are common in both males and females. Under ideal conditions, genetic methods accurately connect the parents to offspring produced by extra-pair matings or conspecific brood parasitism. However, some breeding systems and sampling scenarios present significant complications for accurate parentage assignment. We used simulated genetic pedigrees to assess the reliability of parentage assignment for a series of challenging sampling regimes that reflect realistic conditions for many brood-parasitic birds: absence of genetic samples from sires, absence of samples from brood parasites and female kin-structured populations. Using 18 microsatellite markers and empirical allele frequencies from two populations of a conspecific brood parasite, the wood duck (Aix sponsa), we simulated brood parasitism and determined maternity using two widely used programs, cervus and colony. Errors in assignment were generally modest for most sampling scenarios but differed by program: cervus suffered from false assignment of parasitic offspring, whereas colony sometimes failed to assign offspring to their known mothers. Notably, colony was able to accurately infer unsampled parents. Reducing the number of markers (nine loci rather than 18) caused the assignment error to slightly worsen with colony but balloon with cervus. One potential error with important biological implications was rare in all cases-few nesting females were incorrectly excluded as the mother of their own offspring, an error that could falsely indicate brood parasitism. We consider the implications of our findings for both a retrospective assessment of previous studies and suggestions for best practices for future studies.

ARID1A is a core DNA-binding subunit of the BAF chromatin remodeling complex, and is lost in up to 7% of all cancers. The frequency of ARID1A loss increases in certain cancer types, such as clear cell ovarian carcinoma where ARID1A protein is lost in about 50% of cases. While the impact of ARID1A loss on the function of the BAF chromatin remodeling complexes is likely to drive oncogenic gene expression programs in specific contexts, ARID1A also binds genome stability regulators such as ATR and TOP2. Here we show that ARID1A loss leads to DNA replication stress associated with R-loops and transcription-replication conflicts in human cells. These effects correlate with altered transcription and replication dynamics in ARID1A knockout cells and to reduced TOP2A binding at R-loop sites. Together this work extends mechanisms of replication stress in ARID1A deficient cells with implications for targeting ARID1A deficient cancers., Author summary DNA is an incredibly busy molecule. It is bound by an ever-changing array of proteins, which control how our cells read the instructions encoded within DNA, through a process called transcription. DNA also must be replicated, condensed, and segregated every time a cell divides. These processes of DNA replicating and transcribing must not interfere with one another or the cell risks damage to DNA and potentially changes to the DNA code called mutations. In cancer many DNA transactions are perturbed, and this has been associated with damaging collisions between replication and transcription. Here we find that a gene called ARID1A, which is frequently lost in cancer cells, prevents such collisions between replication and transcription machinery. Loss of ARID1A has many effects on the cell, but in this context it seems to change the location and activity of an important regulator of DNA twisting and untangling called Topoisomerase 2A. Understanding how loss of ARID1A creates stresses on dividing cancer cells provides new opportunities to develop or apply therapies that could exploit this stress.

The utilization of operando spectroscopy has allowed us to watch the dynamic nature of supported metal nanoparticles. However, the realization that subtle changes to environmental conditions affect the form of the catalyst necessitates that we assess the structure of the catalyst across the reactant/product gradient that exists across a fixed bed reactor. In this study, we have performed spatial profiling of a Pd/Al2O3 catalyst during NH3 oxidation, simultaneously collecting mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy data at discrete axial positions along the length of the catalyst bed. The spatial analysis has provided unique insights into the structure–activity relationships that govern selective NH3 oxidation—(i) our data is consistent with the presence of PdNx after the spectroscopic signatures for bulk PdNx disappear and that there is a direct correlation to the presence of this structure and the selectivity toward N2; (ii) at high temperatures, ≥400 °C, we propose that there are two simultaneous reaction pathways—the oxidation of NH3 to NOx by PdO and the subsequent catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 to produce N2. The results in this study confirm the structural and catalytic diversity that exists during catalysis and the need for such an understanding if improvements to important emission control technologies, such as the selective catalytic oxidation of NH3, are to be made.

We demonstrate a modified sol-immobilization procedure using (MeOH)x/(H2O)1-x solvent mixtures to prepare Pd/TiO2 catalysts that are able to reduce the formation of acid catalyzed products, e. g. ethers, for the hydrogenation of furfural. Transmission electron microscopy found a significant increase in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) deposition at the metal-support interface and temperature programmed reduction found a reduced uptake of hydrogen, compared to an established Pd/TiO2 preparation. We propose that the additional PVA hinders hydrogen spillover onto the TiO2 support and limits the formation of Brønsted acid sites, required to produce ethers. Elsewhere, the new preparation route was able to successfully anchor colloidal Pd to the TiO2 surface, without the need for acidification. This work demonstrates the potential for minimizing process steps as well as optimizing catalyst selectivity – both important objectives for sustainable chemistry.

An increasing number of empirical studies aim to quantify individual variation in demographic parameters because these patterns are key for evolutionary and ecological processes. Advanced approaches to estimate individual heterogeneity are now using a multivariate normal distribution with correlated individual random effects to account for the latent correlations among different demographic parameters occurring within individuals. Despite the frequent use of multivariate mixed models, we lack an assessment of their reliability when applied to Bernoulli variables. Using simulations, we estimated the reliability of multivariate mixed effect models for estimating correlated fixed individual heterogeneity in demographic parameters modelled with a Bernoulli distribution. We evaluated both bias and precision of the estimates across a range of scenarios that investigate the effects of life-history strategy, levels of individual heterogeneity and presence of temporal variation and state dependence. We also compared estimates across different sampling designs to assess the importance of study duration, number of individuals monitored and detection probability. In many simulated scenarios, the estimates for the correlated random effects were biased and imprecise, which highlight the challenge in estimating correlated random effects for Bernoulli variables. The amount of fixed among-individual heterogeneity was frequently overestimated, and the absolute value of the correlation between random effects was almost always underestimated. Simulations also showed contrasting performances of mixed models depending on the scenario considered. Generally, estimation bias decreases and precision increases with slower pace of life, large fixed individual heterogeneity and large sample size. We provide guidelines for the empirical investigation of individual heterogeneity using correlated random effects according to the life-history strategy of the species, as well as, the volume and structure of the data available to the researcher. Caution is warranted when interpreting results regarding correlated individual random effects in demographic parameters modelled with a Bernoulli distribution. Because bias varies with sampling design and life history, comparisons of individual heterogeneity among species is challenging. The issue addressed here is not specific to demography, making this warning relevant for all research areas, including behavioural and evolutionary studies.

There is much about the action of bismuth within heterogeneous catalysis that still require a deeper understanding. We observed that, when Bi was added to AuPd bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) supported on activated carbon, Bi affected the activity and significantly alters the selectivity in two model liquid phase reactions, namely the oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol and the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. A combination of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy provided a detailed characterization of trimetallic AuPdBi systems. We propose that the introduction of bismuth on AuPd NPs results in a partial blockage of most active sites, limiting the occurrence of consecutive reactions.

BACKGROUND: Improved imaging techniques have increased the incidence of subsegmental pulmonary embolism (ssPE). Indirect evidence is suggesting that ssPE may represent a more benign presentation of venous thromboembolism not necessarily requiring anticoagulant treatment. However, correctly diagnosing ssPE is challenging with reported low interobserver agreement, partly due to the lack of widely accepted diagnostic criteria. OBJECTIVES: We sought to derive uniform diagnostic criteria for ssPE, guided by expert consensus. METHODS: Based on an extensive literature review and expert opinion of a Delphi steering committee, two surveys including statements regarding diagnostic criteria and management options for ssPE were established. These surveys were conducted electronically among two panels, respectively: expert thoracic radiologists and clinical venous thromboembolism specialists. The Delphi method was used to achieve consensus after multiple survey rounds. Consensus was defined as a level of agreement >70%. RESULTS: Twenty-nine of 40 invited radiologists (73%) and 40 of 51 clinicians (78%) participated. Following two survey rounds by the expert radiologists, consensus was achieved on 15 of 16 statements, including on the established diagnostic criteria for ssPE (96% agreement): a contrast defect in a subsegmental artery, that is, the first arterial branch division of any segmental artery independent of artery diameter, visible in at least two subsequent axial slices, using a computed tomography scanner with a desired maximum collimator width of ≤1 mm. These criteria were approved by 83% of the clinical venous thromboembolism (VTE) specialists. The clinical expert panel favored anticoagulant treatment in case of prior VTE, antiphospholipid syndrome, pregnancy, cancer, and proximal deep vein thrombosis. The use of mechanochemistry to prepare catalytic materials is of significant interest; it offers an environmentally beneficial, solvent-free, route and produces highly complex structures of mixed amorphous and crystalline phases. This study reports on the effect of milling atmosphere, either air or argon, on mechanochemically prepared LaMnO3 and the catalytic performance towards N2O decomposition (deN2O). In this work, high energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), X-ray emission, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to probe the electronic structural properties of the mechanochemically prepared materials. Moreover, in situ studies using near ambient pressure (NAP)-XPS, to follow the materials during catalysis, and high pressure energy dispersive EXAFS studies, to mimic the preparation conditions, have also been performed. The studies show that there are clear differences between the air and argon milled samples, with the most pronounced changes observed using NAP-XPS. The XPS results find increased levels of active adsorbed oxygen species, linked to the presence of surface oxide vacancies, for the sample prepared in argon. Furthermore, the argon milled LaMnO3 shows improved catalytic activity towards deN2O at lower temperatures compared to the air milled and sol–gel synthesised LaMnO3. Assessing this improved catalytic behaviour during deN2O of argon milled LaMnO3 by in situ NAP-XPS suggests increased interaction of N2O at room temperature within the O 1s region. This study further demonstrates the complexity of mechanochemically prepared materials and through careful choice of characterisation methods how their properties can be understood.

R-loops are formed when replicative forks collide with the transcriptional machinery and can cause genomic instability. However, it is unclear how R-loops are regulated at transcription-replication conflict (TRC) sites and how replisome proteins are regulated to prevent R-loop formation or mediate R-loop tolerance. Here, we report that ATAD5, a PCNA unloader, plays dual functions to reduce R-loops both under normal and replication stress conditions. ATAD5 interacts with RNA helicases such as DDX1, DDX5, DDX21 and DHX9 and increases the abundance of these helicases at replication forks to facilitate R-loop resolution. Depletion of ATAD5 or ATAD5-interacting RNA helicases consistently increases R-loops during the S phase and reduces the replication rate, both of which are enhanced by replication stress. In addition to R-loop resolution, ATAD5 prevents the generation of new R-loops behind the replication forks by unloading PCNA which, otherwise, accumulates and persists on DNA, causing a collision with the transcription machinery. Depletion of ATAD5 reduces transcription rates due to PCNA accumulation. Consistent with the role of ATAD5 and RNA helicases in maintaining genomic integrity by regulating R-loops, the corresponding genes were mutated or downregulated in several human tumors.

Creating a new chemical ecosystem based on platform chemicals derived from waste biomass has significant challenges: catalysts need to be able to convert these highly functionalized molecules to specific target chemicals and they need to be economical - not relying on large quantities of precious metals - and maintain activity over many cycles. Herein, we demonstrate how Pd/NiO is able to direct the selectivity of furfural hydrogenation and maintain performance at low Pd loading by a unique dual-site mechanism. Sol-immobilization was used to prepare 1 wt % Pd nanoparticles supported on NiO and TiO2, with the Pd/NiO catalyst showing enhanced activity with a significantly different selectivity profile; Pd/NiO favors tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (72%), whereas Pd/TiO2 produces furfuryl alcohol as the major product (68%). Density functional theory studies evidenced significant differences on the adsorption of furfural on both NiO and Pd surfaces. On the basis of this observation we hypothesized that the role of Pd was to dissociate hydrogen, with the NiO surface adsorbing furfural. This dual-site hydrogenation mechanism was supported by comparing the performance of 0.1 wt % Pd/NiO and 0.1 wt % Pd/TiO2. In this study, the 0.1 and 1 wt % Pd/NiO catalysts had comparable activities, whereas there was a 10-fold reduction in performance for 0.1 wt % Pd/TiO2. When TiO2 is used as the support, the Pd nanoparticles are responsible for both hydrogen dissociation and furfural adsorption and the activity is strongly correlated with the effective metal surface area. This work has significant implications for the upgrading of bioderived feedstocks, suggesting alternative ways for promoting selective transformations and reducing the reliance on precious metals.

To characterize intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction, effect duration, and side effect profile of repeat selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) used as primary stand-alone treatment for open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The secondary aim was to investigate covariates associated with treatment response to SLT.Retrospective chart review.A total of 52 patients with treatment-naïve OAG who received 3 installments of 360The study was conducted in a single specialist practice. First, second, and third SLT (SLT1, SLT2, SLT3, respectively) treatments were compared for IOP reduction and effect duration. Eyes were classified as "treatment responders" if they had ≥20% IOP reduction 4 to 8 weeks post-SLT compared with baseline. Effect duration was the interval between SLT and the time point at which the surgeon decided inadequate IOP control necessitated repeat SLT. Individuals were excluded if they underwent intraocular surgery during the study period or received treatment with adjunctive ocular hypotensive medications.Reduction in IOP post-SLT and effect duration between treatments.Mean age at SLT1 was 58 years; 50% were male, and 92% were phakic. The SLT1 and SLT3 both resulted in mean 27% IOP reduction at 4 to 8 weeks, whereas SLT2 led to 26% IOP reduction. Response rate (≥20% IOP reduction at 4-8 weeks) was 79% for SLT1, 73% for SLT2, and 81% for SLT3, but the difference was not statistically significant. Response to repeat SLT was not significantly associated with previous SLT outcome. Effect duration was 22.2 months, 33.8 months, and 28.9 months after SLT1, SLT2, and SLT3, respectively. Effect duration was significantly longer after SLT2 (P = 0.0006) and SLT3 (P = 0.0444) compared with SLT1. There was no significant association between SLT response and gender, lens status, or OAG subtype.For primary stand-alone treatment in OAG, initial and repeat SLTs produced comparable percentage IOP reduction, but repeat SLTs had longer effect duration. Intraocular pressure response to SLT was not predictive of the IOP response to subsequent, repeat SLT treatment.

The jack-up concrete floating floor has been a staple in the field of architectural acoustical design for decades. Compatible with both spring and elastomeric isolators, the jack-up concrete floating floor system is often specified when the highest level of airborne and structure-borne vibration isolation separation is desired, and assurance of a decoupled floor is needed. Recent laboratory testing for jack-up floating floors under various configurations has yielded interesting and perhaps unexpected results. This paper will review the results from laboratory testing and dissect which factors appear to influence the airborne and/or the structure-borne isolation performance. A preview of future testing will be discussed, including new testing methodologies to validate existing conclusions and identify the influence of additional factors that may influence the airborne and/or structure-borne isolation performance.
