Abstract

To reduce the Legionella-linked risk in the several sites of Sud-Francilien Hospital, following a hospital-acquired legionellosis case, a multidisciplinary working group performed an action plan monitored through Legionella pneumophila counts in hot water supply. From 2003 to the first half year 2009, positive points for Legionella pneumophila in the main sites of the hospital decreased from 85.71 to 28.00%, representing a significant reduction of 67.33%. Similar results were observed for three of the four establishments, whereas the last did not describe a pronounced reduction of Legionella pneumophila counts and showed constantly serogroup 1 strains. During this period, investigations of additional cases of legionellosis demonstrated a nosocomial transmission in one case in this last site. Multidisciplinary mobilization in management of Legionella-linked risk contributed to these results.

Abstract

Abstract

Evidence is reported for the simultaneous production of four charmed particles in interactions induced by 350 GeV/ c π − mesons in stacks of nuclear emulsions. The events were found during a search for beauty particles among a sample of about 200 interactions with candidates for charmed particles. The events selected required the presence of at least one muon with a high component of momentum transverse to the beam direction.

Abstract

The azimuthal correlation distribution of 102 charmed-particle pairs observed in the hybrid emulsion experiment WA75 is compared with theoretical predictions. The various pairs - (D − D 0 ), (D − D + ), (D 0 D 0 ) and (D + D 0 )-all s how, within statistical error, the same azimuthal correlation distribution, demonstrating its independence from the specific nature of the production channel. Among the decays of 150 charged charmed particles and 138 neutral ones seen, higher multiplicities are favoured for hadronic as opposed to semileptonic decays. The data are consistent with the muonic decays of charged D mesons proceeding through the channels (μ ± , v, K 0 ) and [μ ± , v, K ∗0 (892)] , the fraction through K 0 being 0.76±0.06.

Abstract

A large area detector to be used for a Magnetic Monopole search is in preparation. Complementary techniques, in particular the track-etch detector CR-39, will be used. The apparatus will cover a total area of at least 10 3 m 2 inside the Gran Sasso Laboratory. The role of CR-39 in the experiment and the structure of the track-etch detector are presented in this paper. Tests in progress are reported.

Abstract

A signal from B B associated production in π − Uranium interactions at 320 GeV, has been observed looking at events with three muons and two like-sign muons in the final state. The experimental energy and p T distributions of muons as well as the total cross section are in good agreement with QCD predictions.

Abstract

In addition to one previously reported event, a second event, in which a positron is observed together with a strange particle and a negative muon, has been seen in the bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the CERN neutrino beam. The level of the background for this type of event is found to be very low. The data strongly indicate the existence of a new type of interaction leading to a charged lepton pair correlated with a strange particle in the final state. The interpretation of these two events in terms of production of a charmed hadron is presented.

Abstract

A beam dump experiment has been performed at CERN in Gargamelle using the neutrino facility to look for penetrating particles produced either directly in the beam interaction or by prompt decay of new particles. A total of 32 interactions with a visible energy greater than 10 GeV has been found, classified, aftercorrections, into 18 charged current ν μ or ν μ , 5.1 neutral current and 8.9 ν e or ν e charged current events. An excess of ν e events remains after all subtractions from any established sources. Results are presented in terms of the product of the cross section and the leptonic decay branching ratio of the possible source.

Abstract

About 200 and 60 candidates for electron neutrino and antineutrino interactions, respectively, have been analyzed in the heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the CERN PS neutrino beam. Evidence for scaling has been found for these interactions, with slopes of the cross sections in good agreement with those obtained for muon neutrino and antineutrino events in the same chamber. No evidence appears for oscillations of neutrinos or antineutrinos, which would induce in the present experiment an excess of electron or positron events. The corresponding limits are given as functions of the mixing parameter, for the finite mass Majorana neutrinos. The possibility of a multiplicative law for the lepton number has also been investigated. A search for isolated electron-positron pairs revealed no excess in the forward direction, in contradiction to the expectation for muonic neutrino and antineutrino decays. The corresponding limits on the c.m. half lifetimes are given.

Abstract

In the Gargamelle neutrino experiment, three unambiguous candidates for the reaction ν μ + e − → ν μ e − have been observed corresponding to a cross section for a recoil electron energy within the range 0.3 e − GeV of 0.06 × 10 −41 E ν ( GeV ) cm 2 / electron . The calculated background is 0.44 ± 0.13 events and the probability that all three candidates could be due to this background is 1%.

Abstract

Evidence for charmed baryon “elastic” production is found in a sample of 55 000 charged-current neutrino interactions in the bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The product of the average cross section times the branching ratio into modes including a Λ 0 or a K 0 p system is found to be α · B =(14.3 ± 7.4) × 10 −40 cm 2 for ν+n reactions and α · B −40 cm 2 (90% CL) for ν+p reactions.

Abstract

The associated production of a pair of beauty particles B- and B0 by a 350 GeV π- interaction has been observed in an emulsion target inserted in an array of silicon microstrip detectors. Both beauty particles decay into charm particles, both of which are also observed to decay in the emulsion. Two negative muons were identified and their momenta measured in a large muon spectrometer. One muon has a pT of 1.9 GeV/c and is associated with a beauty particle decay. The other, with a pT of 0.45 GeV/c is associated with a charm particle decay. The flight times of the two beauty particles are respectively (0.8 ± 0.1) × 10-13 s and (5+2 -1) × 10-13 s. Abstract

The relativistic increase of ionization is studied in various gaseous mixtures by the method of drop-counting in a cloud chamber. If we callϱ the relative ionization ofβ/√1−β2 equal to 300, we find that in pure Xenon or mixtures of Xenon and Hydrogen,ϱ is of the order of 1.7. On the other hand the value ofϱ drops to 1.3 if Helium is mixed with Xenon.

Abstract

No examples of this decay have been found in a sample of film containing 387 η 0 → π 0 π + π - decays with π 0 detected. The film was taken with the Ecole Polytechnique heavy liquid bubble chamber exposed to 950 MeV/ c π - at Saclay. With 90% confidence the branching ratio η 0 → π 0 e + e - is less than 0.23% of all η 0 decays.

The production of Λ and Σ0 hyperons by antineutrinos has been observed. These events have been used to estimate the production cross-section on protons. The result is compared with the predictions of the Cabibbo theory for the process ν p → μ + Λ .

Abstract

The following decays of η0 mesons produced in 350 000 photographs of a heavy liquid bubble chamber have been observed: η0 → π+π−π0, η0 → 3π0 → 6γ, η0 → γγ. All the γ-rays coming from these decays have been observed and measured; this provides a direct separation of the two neutral modes and independent measurements of the two following branching ratios: R1 = Γ (η0 → 3π0)/Γ(η0 → π+π−π0 and R2 = Γ(gh0 → γγ)/Γ(η0 → π+π−π0). This analysis has been done with 526 η0 → π+π−π0(π0 → γγ), 199 η0 → 3π0 → 6γ and 401 η0 → γγ events. The result R 1 = 1.50 −0.29 +0.15 is in agreement with the theoretical predictions assuming that η0 → 3π decays are pure ΔI = 1 transitions. The result R2 = 1.72 ± 0.25, combined with with R1 and compared with the present world average of the ratio Γ(η0 → neutrals)/gG(η0 → π+π−π0) is compatible with the absence of the mode η0 → π0γγ or with only a small decay rate for this last mode. Then η0 → 3π0 Dalitz plot has been studied, the three π0 being reconstructed from the measurements of the 6γ-rays, using kinematical fits. No significant variation of the η0 → 3π0 amplitude has been found. The coefficient of the term quadratic in pion energies in this amplitude is found to be α = −0.32 ± 0.37.

Abstract

A search for heavily ionizing particles was carried out at the electron-positron storage ring PETRA with the help of Kapton detectors placed inside the vacuum pipe. The total integrated luminosity was 90 pb −1 at CM energies above 34 GeV. The search was sensitive to particles with magnetic charge from 1 · 137 2 e to 5 · 137 2 e and with masses up to up to 10–16 GeV/ c 2 . No such particle was found, leading to an upper limit of the production cross section of monopole-antimonopole pairs of 4 × 10 −38 cm 2 (95% CL).

Abstract

The concept of magnetic monopole arose very long ago from experimental observation of the forces exerted by magnets on each other. In addition, the existence of magnetic sources and currents would symmetrize the Maxwell equations. However, the strongest argument in favor of the magnetic monopole is provided by quantum mechanics, from which P.A.M. Dirac1 was able to predict the strength gD of the magnetic pole gD = hc/2e. All magnetic charges g would be multiples of gD: g = NgD. If the electron is elementary, the least magnetic charge is gD.If fractional charged quarks are elementary, the least magnetic charge is 3 gD.

Abstract

An upper limit of 3 × 10−42 Eν cm2 per electron, at 90% confidence level, has been obtained for the cross section of the process νμ + e− → νμ + e−, interpreted in the usual V-A framework, for an electron recoil energy larger than 0.3 GeV. This estimate is based on the observation of one candidate event in exposures of Gargamelle to the CERN PS neutrino beam.

Abstract

From 199 η O → 3 π O → 6 γ , 526 η O → π + π − π O and 401 η O → γγ events with all γ-rays reconstructed in a heavy liquid bubble chamber, we obtain direct and independent measurements of the branching ratios: R 1 = Γ ( η O → 3 π O )/ Γ ( η O → π + π - π O ) = 1.50 -0.29 +0.15 and R 2 = Γ ( η O → γγ )/ Γ ( η O → π + π - π O ) = 1.72 ± 0.25. We also study the Dalitz-plots for the modes η O → 3π O and η O → π + π - π O , and find no significant variation of the amplitude of the decay η O → 3 π O .

Abstract

The advantage of a hydrogen bubble chamber - i.e. production on free proton -, can be combined with that of the heavy liquid bubble chamber - i.e. detection and measurement of neutral particles, by inserting a liquid hydrogen target in a heavy liquid bubble chamber. Three different targets have been adapted and used successfully for experiments with 8 GeV/c ?- (240,000 photographs), 16 GeV/c ?- (150,000 photographs) and 2 GeV/c ? + (230,000 photographs). The last experiment is in progress.

Abstract

The reaction nu /sub mu /e to nu /sub mu /e has been investigated in the bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS. Nine electron candidates of which 0.5 are expected to be background, were found in a total statistics available of 64000 charged current neutrino events. Results are given in terms of vector and axial vector coupling constants. The present results agree with the standard SU(2)(X)U(1) model for current values of sin/sup 2/ Theta /sub w/. A critical comparison is made with the previous result based on statistics which were smaller by a factor 2.6 and which led to a rather higher cross section. (10 refs).

B B production in π − -uranium interactions has been observed at 320 GeV beam energy looking at events with three muons in the final state. The cross section is found to be σ B B = 4.5±1.4±1.4 nb per nucleon (for a linear A -dependence) or σ B B = 17.6±5.5±5.5 nb per nucleon (assuming A 0.75 dependence). An estimate of x F distribution is given.

Abstract

Data is given for single and multiple strange particle production in neutrino reactions in both charged and neutral current channels. A total of 15000 neutrino and antineutrino events has been examined for possible evidence of semi-leptonic decay of a charmed particle. One candidate has been observed. Upper limits on charmed particle production cross-sections are given as a function of the neutrino energy and the invariant mass of the final state hadrons.

Abstract

A detailed description is given of the WA78 apparatus, which combines a dump calorimeter and a muon spectrometer and is used to measure the cross-section for B B production by a high-intensity 320 GeV π − beam. The performance of the various parts of the equipment is discussed. In particular, we consider all the problems related to the calorimetric measurement in high-rate conditions.

An attempt at the direct observation of the cascade decay of beauty particles, produced by π- of 350 GeV/c leading to 3 muons or 4 muons in the final state, has been made in an emulsion/counter hybrid experiment at CERN. Abstract

The cross section ratio of the elastic neutral current reaction νp→νp to the quasi-elastic charged current reaction νn→μ−p has been measured in the kinematical region 0.3⩽q2⩽1.0 (GeV/c)2. The measured value is RM=0.17±0.08. Model dependent corrections are applied, especially for νn→νn contamination, and the result is compared to various models.

Abstract

A search for direct evidence of the production and subsequent decay of gluinos has been performed in nuclear emulsions. The emulsion stacks were exposed, as part of a large hybrid apparatus, to a beam of 350GeV/ c π t- mesons, and events were selected on the basis of a “missing-energy” trigger. The missing-energy signature is expected to be a characteristic feature of events in which gluinos are produced and subsequently decay into hadrons and almost non-interacting photinos. The negative result of this search sets an upper limit to the production cross section of light gluinos.

Abstract

A study is presented of single πo production in neutrino and antineutrino interactions in Gargamelle filled with freon CF3Br. Limits on the neutral to charged current cross-section ratios R v =σ(v N →v N ′π o )/2 σ(v N → μ - N ′π o ) and R ν = σ( ν N → ν N ′π o )/2 σ( ν N → ω + N ′π o ) are found to be 0.10 ν and 0.26 ν at 68% confidence level.

Abstract

A search for the reaction nu /sub mu /+e/sup -/ to nu /sub mu /+e/sup -/ was made in the bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the wide- and neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS. Ten isolated e/sup -/ were found above 2 GeV energy. All of them were emitted at an angle smaller than 1.5 degrees with respect to the beam. The background is 0.2+or-0.2 events. Results on cross section are given in terms of vector and axial vector coupling constants. A comparison is made with the standard SU(2)(X)U (1) model: no agreement is found with the currently accepted value of the mixing angle. Possible sources other than the above reaction are discussed. Abstract

New results are presented of an analysis of pictures taken during an exposure of Gargamelle to the CERN ν beam in 1975. In addition to three ν μ +N→ μ − +e + +V 0 + hadrons events previously reported, an excess is found of events of the type ν μ +N→ μ − +e + + hadrons without V 0 . An analysis of strange particle production in charged current events suggests a possible violation of the ΔS = ΔQ rule. Interpreted in terms of charm production, the data permit an estimate of branching ratios and production rate of charmed particles. A limit is also placed on charmed particle production by neutral currents.

Abstract

This letter reports a study of 117 opposite-sign and 41 like-sign dimuons, in a wide-band neutrino exposure of Gargamelle at CERN SPS. No signal is found in the μ − μ − channel. The μ − μ + channel is found to be dominated by D-meson production and decay. There is evidence in these events for missing energy which may be interpreted as an unseen neutrino. The V 0 multiplicities, K 0 /event=0.53 −0.20 +0.25 and Λ /event=0.03 −0.04 +0.06 show only evidence for charmed meson production. Information on the D-meson fragmentation function is presented. In a specific model, a rate σ (μ − μ + ) σ(μ − ) =(0.72±0.14×10 −2 is found, independent of the energy. An investigation of these events for visible D-decays sets a limit on the life-time τ D −12 s at 90% C.L.

We give here a detailed description of experiment WA75, which was performed at CERN to search for beauty particles. Events containing at least one muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction were selected; then the primary interactions and decay vertices, located in stacks of nuclear research emulsions, were examined and analysed. The various parts of the apparatus are described and the off-line analysis and search in emulsion are discussed. Abstract

Events induced by neutral particles and producing only hadrons, but no muon or electron, have been observed in the heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to neutrino (v) and antineutrino ( v ) beams at CERN. A study of the various sources which could give rise to such events reveals that less than 20% could be attributed to neutrons or KL°. The events behave as expected if they arise from neutral current processes induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos.
