6. Compatibility of depth-dose data for square and rectangular fields for Clinac-4 with lead flatness filter

Abstract

The central axis depth-dose measurements for a 4 MV X-ray beam from a Clinac-4 with lead flatness filter were made with a 0.6 cm3 ionization chamber and Baldwin-Farmer secondary standard dosemeter. The measurements were made in a water phantom at depths ranging from 1 cm to 15 cm for seven square and thirteen rectangular field sizes from 4*4 cm to 18*25 cm at 80 cm SSD. These measured percentage depth doses were compared with independent measurements on two other units. The present measured values are consistently lower for square and rectangular fields by 2.5% when compared with Wisconsin Dectape data. A comparison with the depth-dose tables by Peterson and Golden show that our values are lower by 1.6% for square fields. Furthermore, such differences in depth-dose values are nearly 2.0% when the present measured values for rectangular fields are compared with calculated values for equivalent square fields from the above tables. Such an intercomparison has been helpful in ratifying the adoption of available depth dose data for clinical use and to account for slight differences in routine radiation treatment planning. The observed discrepancies between the depth-dose data obtained from transparencies made available to the Clinac-4 user and its parent measured data is possibly due to the method of transfer of measured data onto the transparencies.

Abstract

A Complete Treatment Film (CTF) technique provides an accurate description of dose delivery to the area of interest, reduces the time involved in patient set-ups and eliminates the possible errors between two set-ups (when port film is taken). The CTF technique with its special cassette and different types of radiographic films has been evaluated to optimize the radiographic quality of a complete treatment film. Four different types of commercially available radiographic films, two subtraction, a radiation imaging and a therapy localization, were used in this clinical study. The four CTFS obtained for each treatment set-up on a number of patients were evaluated for radiographic quality, detail and definition. The results show that the best CTF is obtained with radiation imaging film.
