Abstract

The rise of calcareous nannoplankton in Mesozoic oceans has deeply impacted ocean chemistry and contributed to shaping modern oceans. Nevertheless, the calcareous nannoplankton colonization of past marine environments remains poorly understood. Based on an extensive compilation of published and unpublished data, we show that their accumulation rates in sediments increased from the Early Jurassic (∼200 Ma) to the Early Cretaceous (∼120 Ma), although these algae diversified up to the end of the Mesozoic (66 Ma). After the middle Eocene (∼45 Ma), a decoupling occurred between accumulation rates, diversity and coccolith size. The time series analyzed points toward a three-phase evolutionary dynamic. An invasion phase of the open-ocean realms was followed by a specialization phase occurring along with taxonomic diversification, ended by an establishment phase where a few small-sized species dominated. The current hegemony of calcareous nannoplankton in the world ocean results from a long-term and complex evolutionary history shaped by ecological interactions and abiotic forcing.

Abstract

[1] The identification of landforms associated to liquid water on Mars is a major goal for the understanding of the geologic and climatic evolution of this planet. In the region of Reull Vallis, near Hellas basin, lobate debris aprons are recent landforms due to the creep of water ice mixed with rocks. Among these landforms, one unusually long debris apron has a tongue-shape and gross morphology that indicates a different mechanism of deposition. This study demonstrates, using topographic data from Viking DEM and MOLA (Mars Observer Laser Altimeter) that the geometric parameters of this feature support the presence of liquid water during its flow. This landform is therefore comparable in size to the most developed wet debris avalanches on Earth. Its late Amazonian age questions the presence of near-surface liquid water in the recent geological past of Mars.

Abstract

The chronology of compressional deformation on Mars is determined using chrono-stratigraphic relations and crater counting in order to provide new evidences for the origin of this deformation. Chronological relations between compressional tectonic features with different directions establish that a single deformation phase occurred in each studied region. On other hand, the intersections between tectonic features and craters permit to compare the relative age of the deformation in different regions. The results demonstrate that there may be a long lapse of time between the accumulation of Hesperian volcanic plains and the compressional deformation in each region. The possible age deduced for the compressional deformation on both Hesperian ridged plains and Noachian primitive terrains is Late Hesperian. A single and global phase may explain the compressional deformation because it is restricted to a single epoch. A global contraction of the planet may explain many properties of compressional tectonism on Mars according to the thermal evolution of the planets. Such process does not exclude secondary sources of stress like Tharsis bulge that would control the geometry of structures at regional scales.

12. Localization of Martian ridges by impact craters: Mechanical and chronological implications

Abstract

The eastern flank of the Tharsis dome (Mars) is affected by compressional ridges. Two conceptual models exist for these structures: (1) the ridges are the expression of a superficial shortening and are rooted on a rheological boundary located in the megaregolith or (2) the ridges result from a global shortening on a lithospheric scale and are rooted on the deep thermal brittle-ductile transition inside the lithosphere. It is shown that the position of the ridges is strongly influenced by the existence of impact craters. The distribution of crater-ridge distances has been measured in the Coprates area. This distribution shows that the intersection of ridges and impact craters with a diameter larger than 4 km is four times as frequent as a homogeneous and random distribution of craters relative to what ridges would produce. Very detailed geometric studies of relationships between intersecting ridges and craters show that these craters are older than the ridges. This localization implies that (1) ridges are superficial structures rooted at shallow depths in the megaregolith, and (2) the ridging phase occurred some time after the deposit of the ridged plain unit material, probably during the upper Hesperian. Detailed geometrical studies of ridge edges and graben/ridge width relationships suggest that ridges are bounded by two reverse faults with different offsets, and that the rheological boundary on which ridges and graben are rooted is around 1.5 km deep. Three ways are possible for an impact crater to localize strain in a regional uniaxial compressional stress field: (1) the strength of impacted material is lower than the strength of the surrounding nonaffected rocks, (2) the lithostatic pressure underneath the crater is lower than the lithostatic pressure at the same depth in the surroundings due to the existence of the crater cavity, and (3) the stress is concentrated on the crater borders if craters can be assimilated to holes in a shortened elastic plate. In all three cases, the initiation of the ridges occurs in the area where a low-strength and/or stress concentration envelope around the crater is nearest to the low-strength decollement level.
