The linearization of a microwave photonic link based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is theoretically described and experimentally demonstrated. Up to four different radio frequency tones are considered in the study, which allow us to provide a complete mathematical description of all third-order distortion terms that arise at the photodetector. Simulations show that a complete linearization is obtained by properly tuning the DC bias voltages and processing the optical carrier and. As a result, a suppression of 17 dBm is experimentally obtained for the third-order distortion terms, as well as a SDFR improvement of 3 dB. The proposed linearization method enables the simultaneous modulation of four different signals without the need of additional radio frequency components, which is desirable to its implementation in integrated optics and makes it suitable for several applications in microwave photonics.

New data-independent acquisition (DIA) modes coupled to chromatographic separations are opening new perspectives in the processing of massive mass spectrometric (MS) data using chemometric methods. In this work, the application of the regions of interest multivariate curve resolution (ROIMCR) method is shown for the simultaneous analysis of MS1 and MS2 DIA raw data obtained by liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight MS analysis. The ROIMCR method proposed in this work relies on the intrinsic bilinear structure of the MS1 and MS2 experimental data which allows us for the fast direct resolution of the elution and spectral profiles of all sample constituents giving measurable MS signals, without needing any further data pretreatment such as peak matching, alignment, or modeling. Compound annotation and identification can be achieved directly by the comparison of the ROIMCR-resolved MS1 and MS2 spectra with those from standards or from mass spectral libraries. ROIMCR elution profiles of the resolved components can be used to build calibration curves for the prediction of their concentrations in complex unknown samples. The application of the proposed procedure is shown for the analysis of mixtures of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in standard mixtures, spiked hen eggs, and gull egg samples, where these compounds tend to accumulate., Research grant from the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Competitiveness (MINECO) for project PID2019-105732GB-C21 is acknowledged by the authors as financial support. Education - Abstract

General Chemistry - Abstract
The analysis of phenolic acids (PAs) is of great importance, because they are frequently present in natural products and their derivatives, and these compounds also have multiple beneficial effects to human health. This work is focusing on the separation of seven PAs (caffeic acid, coumaric acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, protocatechuic acid, sinapic acid, and syringic acid), in a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) isocratic method using a hydrophilic deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a mobile phase additive. The analysis was carried out with a diode array detector. The used DES was composed by choline chloride and glycerol, and it was characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The combination of choline chloride:glycerol (1:4) added at 0.25% to mobile phase composed of 0.15% formic acid aqueous solution and methanol (80:20), showed the best separation for target analytes. The new proposed method was validated, and results indicated that the proposed method is linear, selective for almost all analytes, provided high sensitivity with limit of detection ranges from 0.009 to 0.023 mg mL−1, and has satisfactory precision and accuracy, with values of relative standard deviation of 0.24–2.65% and recoveries of 97.97–109%, respectively. Additionally, this method was successfully applied to simultaneous determination of phenolic acids in three kinds of samples of powder to prepare lemon flavour drink enriched with black tea extract.

Context:Oceans are encountering great loss of biodiversity. Global overfishing and overconsumption of aquatic foods prompted the European Union to create the Common Fishery Policy (CFP) with the intention of supporting sustainability of the environment, economy, and society, and to protect the long-term supply of aquatic foods. The Mediterranean Sea is a vulnerable European region due to fishing at unsustainable levels. Factors exacerbating the situation in this region include socio-economic conditions, weakregulatory power of the EU, poor communication and low levels of consensus among stakeholders.Policy Options:Three policy options are highlighted: 1) Fish-restricted areas (FRA) in eight Mediterranean regions to maintain or reverse fish collapse, as a means to recover fish stocks in regions with higher exploitation rates: 2) Supporting and improving small-scale fisheries (SSF) to reduce the impact on marine wildlife and increase selectivity, including standard gear and size restrictions,as well asstrict seasonal closures; 3) Integration of Participatory Action Research (PAR) to improve stakeholder compliance with the landing obligation.Recommendations:Policy options were assessed by four evaluation criteria (economic feasibility, effectiveness, political feasibility, and equity). Integrating the PAR into the CFP was deemed to be the best option of those examined. A positive impact on the economy, political feasibility, and equity for stakeholders would be expected outcomes of implementation of this alternative. Regular evaluation and continuous improvement would increase the likelihood of policy success.

Cell Biology ,Molecular Biology - Abstract
Gasdermin (GSDM)-mediated pyroptosis is functionally involved in multiple diseases, but Gasdermin-B (GSDMB) exhibit cell death-dependent and independent activities in several pathologies including cancer. When the GSDMB pore-forming N-terminal domain is released by Granzyme-A cleavage, it provokes cancer cell death, but uncleaved GSDMB promotes multiple pro-tumoral effects (invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance). To uncover the mechanisms of GSDMB pyroptosis, here we determined the GSDMB regions essential for cell death and described for the first time a differential role of the four translated GSDMB isoforms (GSDMB1-4, that differ in the alternative usage of exons 6-7) in this process. Accordingly, we here prove that exon 6 translation is essential for GSDMB mediated pyroptosis, and therefore, GSDMB isoforms lacking this exon (GSDMB1-2) cannot provoke cancer cell death. Consistently, in breast carcinomas the expression of GSDMB2, and not exon 6-containing variants (GSDMB3-4), associates with unfavourable clinical-pathological parameters. Mechanistically, we show that GSDMB N-terminal constructs containing exon-6 provoke cell membrane lysis and a concomitant mitochondrial damage. Moreover, we have identified specific residues within exon 6 and other regions of the N-terminal domain that are important for GSDMB-triggered cell death as well as for mitochondrial impairment. Additionally, we demonstrated that GSDMB cleavage by specific proteases (Granzyme-A, Neutrophil Elastase and caspases) have different effects on pyroptosis regulation. Thus, immunocyte-derived Granzyme-A can cleave all GSDMB isoforms, but in only those containing exon 6, this processing results in pyroptosis induction. By contrast, the cleavage of GSDMB isoforms by Neutrophil Elastase or caspases produces short N-terminal fragments with no cytotoxic activity, thus suggesting that these proteases act as inhibitory mechanisms of pyroptosis. Summarizing, our results have important implications for understanding the complex roles of GSDMB isoforms in cancer or other pathologies and for the future design of GSDMB-targeted therapies.

Infection is one of the most important local complications in the patient with femoral neck fracture treated with arthroplasty. The aim of the present study is to describe and analyze possible risk factors that could be involved in periprosthetic infection in the patient with femoral neck fracture.A retrospective case-control study was performed including patients with femoral neck fractures treated with arthroplasty in the period between January 2015 and December 2017. Cases were defined as patients with femoral neck fracture who after undergoing arthroplasty (hemiarthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty) had a periprosthetic infection, whose diagnosis was carried out according to the major and minor criteria described in the International Consensus on Musculoskeletal Infections (Philadelphia 2018). In order to mitigate the influence of variables that could be considered confounding variables, a multivariate analysis was carried out.A statistically significant association was found between periprosthetic infection and certain variables present at the time of admission, including the presence of moderate or severe anaemia (OR 10.91; 95% CI 1.07 - 111.50; p = 0.007), thrombocytopenia (OR 27.72; 95% CI 3. 48 - 221.01; p = 0.002), history of thromboembolism event (OR 8.80; 1.31 - 59.38; p = 0.026), anxious-depressive disorder in treatment with 2 or 3 drugs (OR 21.36; 95% CI 3.65 - 125.12; p = 0.001) and liver disease (OR 32.04; 95% CI 2.59 - 396.29; p = 0.007).Periprosthetic infection in the patient with femoral neck fracture treated with arthroplasty could be related to the presence of certain variables at the time of hospital admission, including moderate or severe anaemia, thrombocytopenia, history of thromboembolic event, anxious-depressive disorder in treatment with 2 or 3 drugs or liver disease.

Bioorthogonal metallocatalysis has opened up a xenobiotic route to perform nonenzymatic catalytic transformations in living settings. Despite their promising features, most metals are deactivated inside cells by a myriad of reactive biomolecules, including biogenic thiols, thereby limiting the catalytic functioning of these abiotic reagents. Here we report the development of cytocompatible alloyed AuPd nanoparticles with the capacity to elicit bioorthogonal depropargylations with high efficiency in biological media. We also show that the intracellular catalytic performance of these nanoalloys is significantly enhanced by protecting them following two different encapsulation methods. Encapsulation in mesoporous silica nanorods resulted in augmented catalyst reactivity, whereas the use of a biodegradable PLGA matrix increased nanoalloy delivery across the cell membrane. The functional potential of encapsulated AuPd was demonstrated by releasing the potent chemotherapy drug paclitaxel inside cancer cells. Nanoalloy encapsulation provides a novel methodology to develop nanoreactors capable of mediating new-to-life reactions in cells., UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) EP/N021134/1, ERC (Advanced Grant CADENCE) ERC-2016-ADG-742684, European Commission European Commission Joint Research Centre H2020-MSCA-IF-2014-658833 H2020-MSCA-IF-2018-841990 H2020-MSCA-IF-2016-749299 H2020-MSCA-IF-2019-895664, Spanish Government RTI2018-099019-A-I00

- Abstract

To estimate the association of free triiodothyronine (FT3) and total triiodothyronine (TT3) in early pregnancy and subsequent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk and define appropriate TT3 thresholds for GDM screening. This investigation is a hospital-based cohort study of pregnant women submitted to a universal thyroid function test before 24 weeks of gestation. GDM was diagnosed according to a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. The association of maternal high FT3 and TT3 levels in early pregnancy with the risk of GDM was estimated using logistic regression. The potential nonlinear association was probed by the restricted cubic spline curve method.A total of 27 184 pregnant women and 3073 GDM cases were included in the analysis. FT3 and TT3 were associated with an increased subsequent risk of GDM in a nonlinear fashion. The adjusted odds ratios were 1.59 (95% confidence interval, 1.50-1.68) and 2.80 (95% confidence interval, 2.46-3.18) for FT3 and TT3 continuous levels, respectively. Associations were strong in euthyroid women, showed heterogeneity in women with mild thyroid dysfunction, and lacked in patients with overt hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The TT3 thresholds of 1.5 and 2.0 ng/mL between 7 and 12 weeks of gestation and 1.6 and 2.1 ng/mL for 13 to 23 weeks of gestation effectively distinguished the subsequent risk of GDM.The increased FT3 and TT3 levels in early pregnancy were associated with a subsequent higher risk of GDM. These findings provide measures for early detection and potential prevention of GDM.

General Medicine - Abstract

BACKGROUND: Polymerization conditions affect the physical-mechanical properties of acrylic resins used for craniofacial prostheses. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of microwave polymerization on the thermomechanical properties and surface morphology of ocular prostheses fabricated with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). METHODS: PMMA discs were polymerized with microwave energy and with conventional heat polymerization (CHP) method. Ocular prostheses were fabricated to determine whether there were changes according to the polymerization method. The surface morphology and roughness were observed under SEM and AFM. The Vickers Hardness number (VHN) and flexural strength were measured. Thermal properties were evaluated with TGA/DSC, and chemical composition with FTIR. RESULTS: The PMMA acrylic resin polymerized with microwave energy showed a smooth surface with some relief areas. In the internal surface of the ocular prosthesis with microwave energy the PMMA is more compact. The mean roughness values were higher and statistically significant with CHP (P

- Abstract
Some genetic variants (polymorphisms) of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme are considered a susceptibility factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and levels of well-recognized atherogenic indices in a female population from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. A total of 340 women participated in the study, and MTHFR C677T genotypification was assessed using a RT-PCR assay. Also, Framingham risk score (FRS), Castelli risk index (CRI), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were estimated. The allelic frequency detected was 0.43 for the MTHFR 677T-allele in the enrolled women. Besides, the mean value of AIP was significantly higher (p p = 0.01). No significant associations were detected between MTHFR C677T genotypes and FRS and CRI indices values. The results found in this research agree with data that support an increased CVDs risk in MTHFR 677T-allele carriers in the human population, as AIP is considered a reliable CVDs risk biomarker.

Objectives: Since 11 March 2020, when the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic, trials have found that the pediatric population is the least affected, and most positive cases are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms such as fever and cough. Aims: The main objective of this study was to describe the percentage of positive tests among children who presented to the emergency department for symptoms compatible with SARS-CoV-2. Additional objectives were to identify clinical screening criteria to identify candidates to perform a polymerase chain reaction or antigen screening test. Patients/Methods: The study had a mixed cross-sectional and case-control design. Data were obtained from the electronic medical records of the emergency service of Hospital Sant Camil, Sant Pere de Ribes (Spain), from May 2020 to September 2021. Patients included had symptoms compatible with COVID-19 and a positive polymerase chain reaction or antigen SARS-CoV-2 screening test. Results: The study included 1508 patients with a mean age of 4.5 years (SD 4.2): 670 of whom were female (44.4%). The percentage of children with a positive polymerase chain reaction or antigen test was 3.51%. For the secondary objectives, some rules were created to create groups in which all patients tested negative: (1) Patients with abdominal pain, who did not present with diarrhea or fatigue, (2) Patients with asthma or allergies, (3) patients older than 3.5 years, with asthenia but without abdominal pain, and (4) patients younger than 3.5 years with abdominal pain and rash. Conclusions: The frequency of children who tested positive for COVID-19 was low among those with a clinical suspicion tested in the emergency room. Some combinations of symptoms and personal history were without exception associated with a negative polymerase chain reaction result for SARS-CoV-2 and could therefore help rule out the disease.

The results of extensive yearly screening (2014–2020) of ortho-phthalate ester levels in textiles sent to a quality control laboratory by textile companies from southern European and northern African countries are presented. Six different regulated phthalates: benzyl butyl phthalate, di-butyl phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-iso-decyl phthalate, di-iso-nonyl phthalate and di-n-octyl phthalate, were measured in 4729 samples of textile materials from 10 different groups. Analyses were carried out according to the standard gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy procedure, as described by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The results revealed a high level of compliance with the European Union legislation (97.25%). In the group of noncompliant samples (total phthalate content >0.1% w/w), positive results were due to the presence of two or more phthalates in almost 60% of the cases. The phthalate esters most commonly detected were di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, followed by di-iso-nonyl phthalate and di-butyl phthalate. In the group of compliant samples (total phthalate

Ascites is the fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity, and it is the consequence of a wide variety of entities, being liver cirrhosis the most common one. In this kind of patients, the development of ascites results from splanchnic vasodilation; decreased effective circulating volume; the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system; and a systemic inflammatory process. Its management is diverse and depends on the severity of the hemodynamic disturbance and other clinical manifestations. In recent years, therapeutic strategies have been developed, but they tend to result unconventional, so new evidence demonstrates the advantages of non-selective beta-blockers for the survival rate of patients with end-stage cirrhosis and ascites.

- Abstract

Purpose Because food waste is a serious problem today, society is currently aiming for more responsible consumption to minimize it, as defined in the 12th goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This study aims to examine whether an informative initiative can help to raise university students’ awareness of food waste consequences. Design/methodology/approach The initiative consisted of explaining the problem of food waste to students of two marketing subject modules within economics and business administration degrees and asking them to participate in an activity in which they analyzed their own behavior. To assess its impact, two questionnaires about the students’ food waste behaviors were administered, before and after the initiative, adopting an experimental design. Findings The results show that the information and awareness activities were successful, because, after the initiative, the students were more aware about the food waste problem and its consequences and were more critical of their behavior regarding the management of leftovers at home. Research limitations/implications Despite some circumstances under which the study was conducted (the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown), the practical and social implications are relevant. Practical implications This study offers some interesting practical implications for educational institutions that want to inform and train students in more responsible consumption behavior. It shows that an initiative in which students are involved, like collecting data about food waste, in their homes with a diary, and informative sessions can be useful to increase students’ awareness of food waste to behave in a more sustainable way. Social implications These findings may be of interest to academics for designing initiatives that try to train and educate young people in making more responsible personal and professional decisions. Originality/value This study analyzes the impact of an awareness-raising initiative about food waste in higher education, which is a relatively neglected topic in the literature.

- Abstract

Obstetrics and Gynecology - Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the endogenous hormonal factors related to dominant handgrip strength (HGS) in postmenopausal women.A cross-sectional study was performed on 402 postmenopausal women aged 47 to 83 years. The following variables were recorded: age, age at menopause, smoking status, adiposity, HGS, and physical activity. Hormonal parameters (follicle-stimulating hormone, estradiol, testosterone, cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, ∆4 androstenedione, insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1], vitamin D, and parathormone levels) were measured and results reported as odds ratios (ORs), β coefficients and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). A directed acyclic graph was used to identify potential confounding variables and was adjusted in the regression model to assess associations between endogenous hormones and HGS.The mean dominant HGS was 22.8 ± 3.7 kg, and 25.6% of women had dynapenia. There were significant differences in plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.98-1.00), cortisol (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.02-1.12), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.98-1.00) between women with normal HGS and those who presented with dynapenia. After adjusting for confounding variables, no significant association was found between endogenous hormones and HGS.Our results showed that studied ovarian steroids, adrenal hormones, IGF-1, parathormone, and vitamin D were not associated with HGS.
