A reliable determination of the basic physical properties and variability patterns of hot emission-line stars is important for understanding the Be phenomenon and ultimately, the evolutionary stage of Be stars. This study is devoted to one of the most remarkable Be stars, V1294 Aql = HD 184279. We collected and analysed spectroscopic and photometric observations covering a time interval of about 25000 d (68 yr). We present evidence that the object is a single-line 192.9 d spectroscopic binary and estimate that the secondary probably is a hot compact object with a mass of about 1.1-1.2 solar masses. We found and documented very complicated orbital and long-term spectral, light, and colour variations, which must arise from a combination of several distinct variability patterns. Attempts at modelling them are planned for a follow-up study. We place the time behaviour of V1294 Aql into context with variations known for some other systematically studied Be stars and discuss the current ideas about the nature of the Be phenomenon., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Contains fulltext : 248681.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Boromycin is a boron-containing macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces antibioticus with potent activity against certain viruses, Gram-positive bacteria and protozoan parasites. Most antimalarial antibiotics affect plasmodial organelles of prokaryotic origin and have a relatively slow onset of action. They are used for malaria prophylaxis and for the treatment of malaria when combined to a fast-acting drug. Despite the success of artemisinin combination therapies, the current gold standard treatment, new alternatives are constantly needed due to the ability of malaria parasites to become resistant to almost all drugs that are in heavy clinical use. In vitro antiplasmodial activity screens of tetracyclines (omadacycline, sarecycline, methacycline, demeclocycline, lymecycline, meclocycline), macrolides (oleandomycin, boromycin, josamycin, troleandomycin), and control drugs (chloroquine, clindamycin, doxycycline, minocycline, eravacycline) revealed boromycin as highly potent against Plasmodium falciparum and the zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi. In contrast to tetracyclines, boromycin rapidly killed asexual stages of both Plasmodium species already at low concentrations (~ 1 nM) including multidrug resistant P. falciparum strains (Dd2, K1, 7G8). In addition, boromycin was active against P. falciparum stage V gametocytes at a low nanomolar range (IC(50): 8.5 ± 3.6 nM). Assessment of the mode of action excluded the apicoplast as the main target. Although there was an ionophoric activity on potassium channels, the effect was too low to explain the drug´s antiplasmodial activity. Boromycin is a promising antimalarial candidate with activity against multiple life cycle stages of the parasite.

We characterize an all-sky catalog of ${\sim} 8,400$ $$ Scuti variables in ASAS-SN, which includes ${\sim} 3,300$ new discoveries. Using distances from \textit{Gaia} DR2, we derive period-luminosity relationships (PLRs) for both the fundamental mode and overtone pulsators in the $W_{JK}$, $V$, Gaia DR2 $G$, $J$, $H$, $K_s$ and $W_1$ bands. We find that the overtone pulsators have a dominant overtone mode, with many sources pulsating in the second overtone or higher order modes. The fundamental mode pulsators have metallicity dependent periods, with $\log_{10} (\rm P){\sim}-1.1$ for $\rm [Fe/H]0$ which leads to a period-dependant scale height. Stars with $\rm P>0.100\,d$ are predominantly located close to the Galactic disk ($\rm |Z|9\, kpc$ to $\log_{10} (\rm P){\sim}-0.85$ for sources with $\rm R, Accepted by MNRAS

Using targeted NMR spectroscopy of 227 fasting serum metabolic traits, we searched for novel metabolic signatures of renal function in 926 type 2 diabetics (T2D) and 4838 non-diabetic individuals from four independent cohorts. We furthermore investigated longitudinal changes of metabolic measures and renal function and associations with other T2D microvascular complications. 142 traits correlated with glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) after adjusting for confounders and multiple testing: 59 in diabetics, 109 in non-diabetics with 26 overlapping. The amino acids glycine and phenylalanine and the energy metabolites citrate and glycerol were negatively associated with eGFR in all the cohorts, while alanine, valine and pyruvate depicted opposite association in diabetics (positive) and nondiabetics (negative). Moreover, in all cohorts, the triglyceride content of different lipoprotein subclasses showed a negative association with eGFR, while cholesterol, cholesterol esters (CE), and phospholipids in HDL were associated with better renal function. In contrast, phospholipids and CEs in LDL showed positive associations with eGFR only in T2D, while phospholipid content in HDL was positively associated with eGFR both cross-sectionally and longitudinally only in non-diabetics. In conclusion, we provide a wide list of kidney function-associated metabolic traits and identified novel metabolic differences between diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease.

We analyzed V-band photometry of the Be star CMa, obtained during the last four decades, during which the star went through four complete cycles of disc formation and dissipation. The data were simulated by hydrodynamic models based on a time-dependent implementation of the viscous decretion disc (VDD) paradigm, in which a disc around a fast-spinning Be star is formed by material ejected by the star and driven to progressively larger orbits by means of viscous torques. Our simulations offer a good description of the photometric variability during phases of disc formation and dissipation, which suggests that the VDD model adequately describes the structural evolution of the disc. Furthermore, our analysis allowed us to determine the viscosity parameter , as well as the net mass and angular momentum (AM) loss rates. We find that is variable, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0, not only from cycle to cycle but also within a given cycle. Additionally, build-up phases usually have larger values of than the dissipation phases. Furthermore, during dissipation the outward AM flux is not necessarily zero, meaning that CMa does not experience a true quiescence but, instead, switches between a high to a low AM loss rate during which the disc quickly assumes an overall lower density but never zero. We confront the average AM loss rate with predictions from stellar evolution models for fast-rotating stars, and find that our measurements are smaller by more than one order of magnitude., 16 pages, 16 figures

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA-1) is a progressive and fatal disease that leads to ethical problems for Paediatric professionals. Our objective was to determine the ethical options of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) paediatricians as regards a child with SMA-1 and respiratory failure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire sent to PICUs in Spain (which can be accessed through the Spanish Society of Paediatric Critical Care web page). RESULTS: Of the 124 responses analysed, 70% were from women, 51% younger than 40 years, 54% from a PICU with more than 10 beds, 69% with prior experience in such cases, and 53% with religious beliefs. In the last patient cared for, most paediatricians opted for non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) and limitation of therapeutic effort (LET) in case of NIV failure. Confronted with a future hypothetical case, half of paediatricians would opt for the same plan (NIV+LET), and 74% would support the family's decision, even in case of disagreement. Age, prior experience and sex were not related to the preferred options. Paediatricians with religious beliefs were less in favour of initial LET. Less than two-thirds (63%) scored the quality of life of a child with SMA-1 and invasive mechanical ventilation as very poor. CONCLUSIONS: Faced with child with SMA-1 and respiratory failure, most paediatricians are in favour of initiating NIV and LET when such support is insufficient, but they would accept the family's decision, even in case of disagreement.

We have used the radiative transfer code HDUST to analyze and interpret the long-term photometric behavior of the Be star omega CMa, considering four complete cycles of disk formation and dissipation. This is the first time in which a full lightcurve of a Be star was investigated and modeled including both disk build-up and dissipation phases. Based on the quite good fit of the observed data we were able to derive the history of stellar mass decretion rates (including long- and short-term changes) during the disk formation and dissipation phases in all four cycles., 4 pages, 4 figures

W Serpentids and Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) are candidates for close interacting binaries in a non-conservative evolutionary stage; while W Serpentids are defined by high-excitation ultraviolet emission lines present during most orbital phases, and by usually showing variable orbital periods, DPVs are characterized by a long photometric cycle lasting roughly 33 times the (practically constant) orbital period. We report the discovery of 7 new Galactic DPVs, increasing the number of known DPVs in our Galaxy by 50%. We find that DPVs are tangential-impact systems, i.e. their primaries have radii barely larger than the critical Lubow-Shu radius. These systems are expected to show transient discs, but we find that they host stable discs with radii smaller than the tidal radius. Among tangential-impact systems including DPVs and semi-detached Algols, only DPVs have primaries with masses between 7 and 10 $M_{\odot}$. We find that DPVs are in a Case-B mass transfer stage with donor masses between 1 and 2 M$_{\odot}$ and with primaries resembling Be stars. W Serpentids are impact and non-impact systems, their discs extend until the last non-intersecting orbit and show a larger range of stellar mass and mass ratio than DPVs. Infrared photometry reveals significant color excesses in many DPVs and W Serpentids, usually larger for the latter ones, suggesting variable amounts of circumstellar matter., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 12 tables. We present prelimiary results from a coordinated spectroscopic campaign in 2011, centered on the \delta Sco periastron passage in July. Data have mostly been obtained with the FEROS/2.2 m at La Silla and ESPaDOnS/CFHT at Mauna Kea echelle instruments. Main results include the absence of tidally induced disturbance to the main \beta Cephei pulsation mode and the absence of tidally triggered mass-ejection at time of periastron proper. The observed (as far as yet analyzed) variations are compatible with the picture of a disk that is disturbed on its outer radius, with the disturbance propagating inwards after the periastron., Comment: Presented in "Circumstellar Dynamics at High Resolution", Foz do Igua\c{c}u, Brazil, February 27 - March 02, to appear in 2012, ASP Conf. The ATLAS Tile hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) provides highly-segmented energy measurements of incoming particles. The information from TileCal's last segmentation layer can assist in muon tagging and it is being considered for a near future upgrade of the level-one trigger, mainly for rejecting triggers due to cavern background at the barrel region. A muon receiver for the TileCal muon signals is being designed in order to interface with the ATLAS level-one trigger. This paper addresses the preliminary studies concerning the muon discrimination capability for the muon receiver. Monte Carlo simulations for single muons from the interaction point were used to study the effectiveness of hadronic calorimeter information on muon detection.

- Abstract
Temporal physiological variations in relation to environmental factors, in particular to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, have been studied in bryophytes from circumpolar latitudes, but not in mid-latitudes with longer growing seasons. In addition, seasonal and interannual changes in individual UV-absorbing compounds (UVAC) have not been previously studied in bryophytes. To fill these gaps, samples of the aquatic liverwort Jungermannia exsertifolia subsp. cordifolia were collected on a monthly basis during 3 years from a mountain stream in northern Spain. Sclerophylly index, chlorophyll fluorescence, DNA damage, the bulk UV absorbance of methanolic extracts and the concentration of five UVAC (hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) were measured. Interannual changes were little marked, probably because the 3 years studied were environmentally similar. In summer-autumn, with respect to seasonal variations, newly grown tender young shoots with high Fv/Fm accumulated higher amounts of several hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives than in winter-spring. DNA damage was not detected in any of the samples analyzed. p-Coumaroylmalic acid was the compound best associated with radiation changes, and the best model explaining UV-B took into consideration the concentration of this compound and the ozone level. The specific effects of UV radiation could not be separated from the effects caused by other environmental factors, such as global radiation or temperature, because all these variables were correlated. However, indirect evidence strongly suggests that seasonal changes in bulk UV absorbance and p-coumaroylmalic acid are mainly driven by UV radiation. This compound may be a promising physiological variable to be used for UV bioindication. Copyright © 2009 Physiologia Plantarum.

Combining visual observations of SR variables with measurements of them using a photoelectric photometer is discussed then demonstrated using data obtained for the bright, southern SR variable theta Aps. Combining such observations is useful in that it can provide a more comprehensive set of data by extending the temporal coverage of the light curve. The LHCb detector is currently being installed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and is foreseen to start operating in 2007. It is designed to perform high-precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of B hadrons. The Silicon Tracker is part of the LHCb tracking system. It consists of the Trigger Tracker in front of the experiment's dipole magnet and the Inner Tracker downstream of the magnet. Both detectors employ silicon micro-strip technology to cope with the charged particle fluxes of up to 5 105 cm-2s-1 that are expected in the innermost regions of the detectors. In this note the design and production status of the Trigger Tracker and the Inner Tracker are presented together with an overview of the LHCb tracking strategy.

The LHCb detector is a collider experiment at the new LHC at CERN/Switzerland. It is dedicated to measure precisely CP violation parameters in the B-system. The LHCb Silicon Tracker is covering the regions of the tracking detector with the highest particle fluences. The silicon sensors are wide pitch strip detectors connected to multi-channel analogue readout amplifiers. The analogue data is then digitized and transmitted optically to the counting room for further processing. The following paper describes R&D of the silicon sensors performed including testbeam data. We present readout chip performance followed by an overview of the used data transmission system, which has been designed for radiation tolerance and low cost.

The depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer as a result of anthropogenic activities increases the ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiance at ground level. This may lead to harmful biological consequences affecting photosynthetic organisms. Mountain streams are especially exposed to a UV-B increase, and bryophytes play a key ecological role in them. In this paper, the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on photosynthetic organisms in general and on bryophytes in particular are described. Hereafter, some results obtained by our group on the effects of UV-B on bryophytes from mountain streams are presented. Laboratory and field experiments show that these effects depend on the species, the environmental factors (such as temperature), and the origin of the samples (sun or shade conditions, low or high altitude). Among the variables measured, the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and the level of UV-absorbing compounds seem to be the most responsive to enhanced UV-B, but no variable responded in the same manner in every species. The potential use of aquatic bryophytes as bio-indicators of changes in ambient UV-B radiation would require an adequate selection of both variables and species. Promising variables are Fv/Fm, the concentration of UV-absorbing compounds (especially if they are analyzed individually) and DNA damage, whereas the liverwort Jungermannia exsertifolia subsp. cordifolia has been revealed to be a good bio-indicator species. Globally, the responses of aquatic bryophytes to UV-B radiation and their protecting systems are still poorly characterized, and thus further study is required under both controlled and field conditions.

The LHCb Silicon Tracker uses detector ladders with readout strips with an effective length of up to 36,cm. Kapton interconnect cables of up to 54,cm in length are employed in between silicon sensors and front-end readout hybrids. Fast front-end readout electronics with a shaping time of around 25,ns are employed to avoid pile-up of events from consecutive LHC bunch crossings. An extensive measurement program as well as simulations have been carried out to study the expected noise performance of these detectors. LHCb is one of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It is dedicated to B-physics and CP-violation measurements. To fully exploit its physics potential, a good tracking performance with high efficiency in the high particle density environment close to the beam pipe is required. For this purpose, the LHCb Silicon Tracker uses strip detectors with large read-out pitch and long strips. We give a summary of the R\&D program of the Silicon Tracker and of performance studies for the long term operation in the LHC radiation environment.

Detectors and Experimental Techniques - Abstract
A fiber-optic readout system has been designed for the LHCb Silicon Tracker to transmit the detector data to the counting room at a distance of 120 m from the detectors. In total, data from over 272000 detector channels have to be transmitted at an average trigger frequency of 1.1 MHz. In the design of the system, special attention was given to its radiation tolerance, as the transmitting section is located close to the beamline and therefore is exposed to moderate particle fluences and ionizing dose during the expected operational life of 10 years. We give a general overview of the readout link scheme and present performance data on its reliability and radiation tolerance obtained from first preseries elements of the system. Poster presented on the 10th European Symposium on Semiconductor Detectors, June 12th â" June 16th 2005, Wildbad Kreuth, Germany.

Detectors and Experimental Techniques - Abstract
The Silicon Tracker of the LHCb experiment consists of four silicon detector stations positioned along the beam line of the experiment. The detector modules of each station are constructed from wide pitch silicon microstrip sensors. Located at the module's end, a polyimide hybrid is housing the front-end electronics. The assembly of the more than 600 hybrids has been outsourced to industry. We will report on the design and production status of the hybrids for the LHCb Silicon Tracker and describe the quality assurance tests. Particular emphasis is laid on the vendor qualifying and its impact on our hybrid design that we experienced during the prototyping phase.

Physics::Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The LHCb Silicon Tracker is a large-surface silicon micro-strip detector that will cover an important part of the LHCb tracking system. Its data will be used in the trigger to select high-p_T daughter particles from B-meson decays, and in the offline analysis to reconstruct trajectories of charged particles in the very forward region of the detector. Readout strips of up to 38 cm in length with strip pitches of approximately 200 micrometer will be employed. For the readout, a custom developed front-end chip and a Gbit digital optical link will be used. The design of detector, silicon sensors and readout link is presented.

The pipeline homogeneity in general and the behaviour of the edge channels of the Beetle 1.2 readout chip [1] were studied with data taken during the Silicon Tracker test beam period in May 2003. A contribution of roughly 10\% from pipeline inhomogeneities to the strip noise was observed. All channels including the first and the last one were found to be fully functional.

Physics::Instrumentation and Detectors ,Detectors and Experimental Techniques - Abstract
Multi-geometry silicon prototype sensors designed for the LHCb Inner Tracker have been studied in a test beam performed in the X7 beam line at CERN in May 2002. Measurements were made using the Beetle 1.1 analogue front-end chip and a sampling at 40 MHz. In this note results on resolution, signal-to-noise, noise rates and efficiencies are presented as function of the bias voltage and for different shaping times. Based on these results a decision will be made on which geometry will be implemented in the final sensors for the LHCb Inner Tracker.
