- Abstract

In many real life situations one has $m$ types of random events happening in chronological order within a time interval and one wishes to predict various milestones about these events or their subsets. An example is birdwatching. Suppose we can observe up to $m$ different types of birds during a season. At any moment a bird of type $i$ is observed with some probability. There are many natural questions a birdwatcher may have: how many observations should one expect to perform before recording all types of birds? Is there a time interval where the researcher is most likely to observe all species? Or, what is the likelihood that several species of birds will be observed at overlapping time intervals? Our paper answers these questions using a new model based on random interval graphs. This model is a natural follow up to the famous coupon collector's problem., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being researched and developed for a wide range of societal applications in the USA, Europe, and even some Asian countries. This study aimed to determine the trend of artificial intelligence and 3D printing technology in construction. Results showed that a 3D digital model is necessary for all 3D printing processes, and the BIM artificial intelligence software enables automated 3D printing for construction projects. Using 3D printing technology boosts productivity and efficiency while lowering labor expenses and increasing accuracy. In addition, Artificial Intelligence (AI) application in 3D Construction Printing has ethical impacts on unemployment, humanity, security, and intellectual property. In addition, impacts on machines include AI bias, global regulations, and accelerated hacking.

During coal mining activities, many compounds are released into the environment that can negatively impact human health. Particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and oxides are part of the complex mixture that can affect nearby populations. Therefore, we designed this study to evaluate the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in individuals chronically exposed to coal residues from peripheral blood lymphocytes and buccal cells. We recruited 150 individuals who lived more than 20 years in La Loma-Colombia and 120 control individuals from the city of Barranquilla without a history of exposure to coal mining. In the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-Cyt) assay, significant differences in the frequency of micronucleus (MN), nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear bud (NBUD), and apoptotic cells (APOP) were observed between the two groups. In the buccal micronucleus cytome (BM-Cyt) assay, a significant formation of NBUD, karyorrhexis (KRX), karyolysis (KRL), condensed chromatin (CC), and binucleated (BN) cells was observed in the exposed group. Considering the characteristics of the study group, a significant correlation for CBMN-Cyt was found between NBUD and vitamin consumption, between MN or APOP and meat consumption, and between MN and age. Moreover, a significant correlation for BM-Cyt was found between KRL and vitamin consumption or age, and BN versus alcohol consumption. Using Raman spectroscopy, a significant increase in the concentration of DNA/RNA bases, creatinine, polysaccharides, and fatty acids was detected in the urine of individuals exposed to coal mining compared to the control group. These results contribute to the discussion on the effects of coal mining on nearby populations and the development of diseases due to chronic exposure to these residues.

Background: We aim to assess whether time of day modified the treatment effect in the RACECAT trial (Direct Transfer to an Endovascular Center Compared to Transfer to the Closest Stroke Center in Acute Stroke Patients With Suspected Large Vessel Occlusion Trial), a cluster-randomized trial that did not demonstrate the benefit of direct transportation to a thrombectomy-capable center versus nearest local stroke center for patients with a suspected large vessel stroke triaged in nonurban Catalonia between March 2017 and June 2020. Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis of RACECAT to evaluate if the association between initial transport routing and functional outcome differed according to trial enrollment time: daytime (8:00 am –8:59 pm ) and nighttime (9:00 pm –7:59 am ). Primary outcome was disability at 90 days, as assessed by the shift analysis on the modified Rankin Scale score, in patients with ischemic stroke. Subgroup analyses according to stroke subtype were evaluated. Results: We included 949 patients with an ischemic stroke, of whom 258 patients(27%) were enrolled during nighttime. Among patients enrolled during nighttime, direct transport to a thrombectomy-capable center was associated with lower degrees of disability at 90 days (adjusted common odds ratio [acOR], 1.620 [95% CI, 1.020–2.551]); no significant difference between trial groups was present during daytime (acOR, 0.890 [95% CI, 0.680–1.163]; P interaction =0.014). Influence of nighttime on the treatment effect was only evident in patients with large vessel occlusion(daytime, acOR 0.766 [95% CI, 0.548–1.072]; nighttime, acOR, 1.785 [95% CI, 1.024–3.112] ; P interaction P interaction >0.1 for all comparisons). We observed longer delays in alteplase administration, interhospital transfers, and mechanical thrombectomy initiation during nighttime in patients allocated to local stroke centers. Conclusions: Among patients evaluated during nighttime for a suspected acute severe stroke in non-urban areas of Catalonia, direct transport to a thrombectomy-capable center was associated with lower degrees of disability at 90 days. This association was only evident in patients with confirmed large vessel occlusion on vascular imaging. Time delays in alteplase administration and interhospital transfers might mediate the observed differences in clinical outcome. Detection of antigens and antibodies (Abs) is of great importance in determining the infection and immunity status of the population, as they are key parameters guiding the handling of pandemics. Current point-of-care (POC) devices are a convenient option for rapid screening; however, their sensitivity requires further improvement. We present an interdigitated gold nanowire-based impedance nanobiosensor to detect COVID-19-associated antigens (receptor-binding domain of S1 protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus) and respective Abs appearing during and after infection. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique was used to assess the changes in measured impedance resulting from the binding of respective analytes to the surface of the chip. After 20 min of incubation, the sensor devices demonstrate a high sensitivity of about 57 pS·sn per concentration decade and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.99 pg/mL for anti-SARS-CoV-2 Abs and a sensitivity of around 21 pS·sn per concentration decade and an LOD of 0.14 pg/mL for the virus antigen detection. Finally, the analysis of clinical plasma samples demonstrates the applicability of the developed platform to assist clinicians and authorities in determining the infection or immunity status of the patients.

General Economics, Econometrics and Finance - Abstract
We develop a model in which two players sequentially and publicly examine a project. In our model the player who moves first can fabricate evidence to influence the second mover, which creates a moral hazard problem. We find that early strategic uncertainty can mitigate this problem. In particular, for intermediate prior beliefs about the project’s quality, the Pareto-dominant equilibrium is in mixed strategies and consists of an early stage in which evidence may be fabricated and a later stage in which evidence is always authentic. Our findings shed light on the dynamics of R&D, quality assurance, and drug approval. (JEL D82, D83, L15)

Surgery - Abstract

Technology management is more important than ever due to the quick development of technology across all fields of specialization. The study is grounded on the challenges faced by lecturers and students of the engineering department and highlighted the mechanisms used in finding the solutions. The study made use of a qualitative research design to gather in-depth insights about the problem and generate new ideas for research. The respondents of the study include the department head and lecturers of the department. The study used maxQDA software in the analysis of responses to develop a model based on the existing practices of an engineering division. This model includes mechanisms to address the technological challenges like regular meetings and collaborative meetings with teachers and students. These practices address the technological challenges on management, teaching, and learning. The school must embody key characteristics to face all challenges and must start with collaboration among the teachers and students before extruding to collaboration with external stakeholders like alumni and local government units. This study further showed the effect of poor internet connectivity, thus school administrators should look into the need providing internet connection in the campus for teachers needs in providing effective instructions. The results further showed the challenge in adapting new technologies like software and online platform intended for learning of students. The head of the division must be supportive of the teaching needs of the staff which results in good relations and collaboration of subordinates and students. Lastly, lecturers must be compassionate to teaching to address the learning needs of students and consider methods like video clips, tutorial sessions, and consultation.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) is a neurotoxic side effect of chemotherapy that has yet to have an effective treatment. Objective: Using cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy together with excitatory cortical neurons derived from human induced pluripotent cells (iPSCs) to model of CICI, our recent study demonstrated that dysregulation of brain NAD+ metabolism contributes to cisplatin-induced impairments in neurogenesis and cognitive function, which was prevented by administration of the NAD+ precursor, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). However, it remains unclear how cisplatin causes neurogenic dysfunction and the mechanism by which NMN prevents cisplatin-induced cognitive impairment. Given that mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to play a prominent role in age-related neurodegenerative disease and chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity, we sought to explore if NMN prevents chemotherapy-related neurotoxicity by attenuating cisplatin-induced mitochondrial damage. Results: We demonstrate that cisplatin induces neuronal DNA damage, increases generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreases ATP production, all of which are indicative of oxidative DNA damage and mitochondrial functional defects. Ultrastructural analysis revealed that cisplatin caused loss of cristae membrane integrity and matrix swelling in human cortical neurons. Notably, pretreatment with NMN prevents cisplatin-induced defects in mitochondria of human cortical neurons. Conclusion: Our results suggest that increased mitochondrial oxidative stress and functional defects play key roles in cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity. Thus, NMN may be an effective therapeutic strategy to prevent cisplatin-induced deleterious effects on mitochondria, making this organelle a key factor in amelioration of cisplatin-induced cognitive impairments.

Background: We aim to compare the outcome of patients from urban areas, where the referral center is able to perform thrombectomy, with patients from nonurban areas enrolled in the RACECAT trial (Direct Transfer to an Endovascular Center Compared to Transfer to the Closest Stroke Center in Acute Stroke Patients With Suspected Large Vessel Occlusion). Methods: Patients with suspected large vessel occlusion stroke, as evaluated by a Rapid Arterial Occlusion Evaluation score of ≥5, from urban catchment areas of thrombectomy-capable centers during RACECAT trial enrollment period were included in the Stroke Code Registry of Catalonia. Primary outcome was disability at 90 days, as assessed by the shift analysis on the modified Rankin Scale score, in patients with an ischemic stroke. Secondary outcomes included mortality at 90 days, rate of thrombolysis and thrombectomy, time from onset to thrombolysis, and thrombectomy initiation. Propensity score matching was used to assemble a cohort of patients with similar characteristics. Results: The analysis included 1369 patients from nonurban areas and 2502 patients from urban areas. We matched 920 patients with an ischemic stroke from urban areas and nonurban areas based on their propensity scores. Patients with ischemic stroke from nonurban areas had higher degrees of disability at 90 days (median [interquartle range] modified Rankin Scale score, 3 [2–5] versus 3 [1–5], common odds ratio, 1.25 [95% CI, 1.06–1.48]); the observed average effect was only significant in patients with large vessel stroke (common odds ratio, 1.36 [95% CI, 1.08–1.65]). Mortality rate was similar between groups(odds ratio, 1.02 [95% CI, 0.81–1.28]). Patients from nonurban areas had higher odds of receiving thrombolysis (odds ratio, 1.36 [95% CI, 1.16–1.67]), lower odds of receiving thrombectomy(odds ratio, 0.61 [95% CI, 0.51–0.75]), and longer time from stroke onset to thrombolysis (mean difference 38 minutes [95% CI, 25–52]) and thrombectomy(mean difference 66 minutes [95% CI, 37–95]). Conclusions: In Catalonia, Spain, patients with large vessel occlusion stroke triaged in nonurban areas had worse neurological outcomes than patients from urban areas, where the referral center was able to perform thrombectomy. Interventions aimed at improving organizational practices and the development of thrombectomy capabilities in centers located in remote areas should be pursued. We examined the associations of middle childhood and adolescence nighttime sleep duration with adolescence internalizing and externalizing behavior problems per the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) questionnaires, in a cohort of 889 Colombian schoolchildren. We estimated adjusted differences with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in mean behavior problem t-scores in standardized units between recommended sleep duration categories and as a continuous exposure using multiple linear regression and restricted cubic spline models, respectively. Compared with sleep duration within recommendations, middle childhood sleep above recommendations was related to 4.6 (95% CI: 1.6, 7.6; p = .004) and 5.4 (95% CI: 1.2, 9.7; p = .01) adjusted units higher YSR and CBCL externalizing problem scores, respectively. In continuous exposure analyses, this association seemed restricted to children aged ≥11 years. Longer sleep, both in categories and as a continuous exposure, was also associated with increased CBCL internalizing problems. Results did not differ by sex or weekend/weekday sleep. Sleeping under recommendations in middle childhood was not significantly related to behavior problems; nevertheless, shorter sleep in adolescence, in both categorical and continuous scales, was significantly related to behavior problems. In conclusion, behavior problems in adolescence are associated with longer sleep in middle childhood and shorter sleep in adolescence.

The mechanism governing the transition of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) toward differentiated cells is only partially understood. To explore this transition, the activity and expression of the ubiquitous phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3Kα and PI3Kβ) were modulated in primed hESCs. The study reports a pathway that dismantles the restraint imposed by the EZH2 polycomb repressor on an essential stemness gene, NODAL, and on transcription factors required to trigger primitive streak formation. The primitive streak is the site where gastrulation begins to give rise to the three embryonic cell layers from which all human tissues derive. The pathway involves a PI3Kβ non-catalytic action that controls nuclear/active RAC1 levels, activation of JNK (Jun N-terminal kinase) and nuclear β-catenin accumulation. β-Catenin deposition at promoters triggers release of the EZH2 repressor, permitting stemness maintenance (through control of NODAL) and correct differentiation by allowing primitive streak master gene expression. PI3Kβ epigenetic control of EZH2/β-catenin might be modulated to direct stem cell differentiation., This work was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (SAF2016-79195-R and PID2019-106937RB-I00), by the Madrid Regional Government (S2017/BMD-3804), and by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (16035CARR). High Energy Physics - Theory ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology ,Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
In this study, we propose a reparameterization of a specific viable $f(R)$ gravity model to represent it as a perturbation of the $\Lambda$CDM model. The $f(R)$ gravity model under consideration includes two parameters, $b$ and $n$, which control how close the proposed model can be to $\Lambda$CDM, allowing for arbitrary proximity. Furthermore, it is shown that the Hu-Sawicki (HS) model is a limiting case of this reparameterized model. Following the existing literature, we also derive an analytical approximation for the expansion rate $H(z)$, which shows an excellent agreement between this analytical approximation and the numerical solution over a wide range of redshifts for realistic values of the deviation parameter $b$. By appropriately selecting values for the model parameters, we plot the cosmological parameters $w_{\rm{DE}}$, $w_{\rm{eff}}$, $\Omega_{\rm{DE}}$, and $H(z)$, as well as the statefinder quantities $q$, $j$, $s$, and $Om(z)$. We find that their present values (at $z=0$) are consistent with the observations from Planck 2018 and the values predicted by the $\Lambda$CDM model. It is important to note that the examined cosmological and statefinder parameters do not exhibit significant oscillations of effective dark energy, which could lead to singular and unphysical solutions at high redshifts. This anomalous behavior has been avoided here by utilizing the approximate analytical solution for $H(z)$. Additionally, we conduct a detailed analysis of the evolution of matter density perturbations within the introduced $f(R)$ gravity model. The results demonstrate that this viable $f(R)$ gravity model is practically indistinguishable from the $\Lambda$CDM model at the background level., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures, 1 table

- Abstract

- Abstract
Type III radio bursts are produced by beams of electrons that are accelerated at reconnection sites of solar flares. Although these coronal emissions are frequently detected by ground-based observatories, dedicated instruments in space are necessary to measure radio sources that are generated further in the interplanetary medium, due to the ionospheric cutoff at around 15 MHz. In this study, we present a statistical analysis of 20 type III radio bursts that were observed simultaneously by multiple spacecraft and associated with solar flares of magnitude M1 or larger. We used radio data that were recorded by Wind, STEREO-A, Parker Solar Probe, and Solar Orbiter. The multipoint observations allowed us to compare the locations of solar flares with the locations of radio sources. Our analysis revealed that radio bursts are statisticallyshifted eastward by 18 degrees, which could be explained by a poleward component of the local density gradient along open magnetic field lines., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

- Abstract
Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1. The search uses two observables, O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ 1 and O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ 3, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ 1 is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ 3 consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.

20 Pág., Coronaviruses (CoVs) of genera α, β, γ, and δ encode proteins that have a PDZ-binding motif (PBM) consisting of the last four residues of the envelope (E) protein (PBM core). PBMs may bind over 400 cellular proteins containing PDZ domains (an acronym formed by the combination of the first letter of the names of the three first proteins where this domain was identified), making them relevant for the control of cell function. Three highly pathogenic human CoVs have been identified to date: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and SARS-CoV-2. The PBMs of the three CoVs were virulence factors. SARS-CoV mutants in which the E protein PBM core was replaced by the E protein PBM core from virulent or attenuated CoVs were constructed. These mutants showed a gradient of virulence, depending on whether the alternative PBM core introduced was derived from a virulent or an attenuated CoV. Gene expression patterns in the lungs of mice infected with SARS-CoVs encoding each of the different PBMs were analyzed by RNA sequencing of infected lung tissues. E protein PBM of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 dysregulated gene expression related to ion transport and cell homeostasis. Decreased expression of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mRNA, essential for alveolar edema resolution, was shown. Reduced CFTR mRNA levels were associated with edema accumulation in the alveoli of mice infected with SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. Compounds that increased CFTR expression and activity, significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2 growth in cultured cells and protected against mouse infection, suggesting that E protein virulence is mediated by a decreased CFTR expression. IMPORTANCE Three highly pathogenic human CoVs have been identified: SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2. The E protein PBMs of these three CoVs were virulence factors. Gene expression patterns associated with the different PBM motifs in the lungs of infected mice were analyzed by deep sequencing. E protein PBM motif of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 dysregulated the expression of genes related to ion transport and cell homeostasis. A decrease in the mRNA expression of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which is essential for edema resolution, was observed. The reduction of CFTR mRNA levels was associated with edema accumulation in the lungs of mice infected with SARS-CoV-2. Compounds that increased the expression and activity of CFTR drastically reduced the production of SARS-CoV-2 and protected against its infection in a mice model. These results allowed the identification of cellular targets for the selection of antivirals., This work was supported by grants from the Government of Spain (BIO2016-75549-R; PID2019-107001RB-I00 AEI/FEDER, UE; SEV 2017-0712 and PIE_INTRAMURAL_LINEA 1- 202020E079), CSIC (PIE_INTRAMURAL-202020E043), the European Zoonotic Anticipation and Preparedness Initiative (ZAPI) (IMI_JU_115760), the European Commission (H2020-SC1- 2019, ISOLDA Project No. 848166-2), and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) (2P01AI060699).
