Abstract

178th Course of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi on From the Big Bang to the Nucleosynthesis -- JUL 19-24, 2010 -- Varenna, ITALY, WOS: 000350800900023, The transition between order and chaos is studied in the warm rotating nucleus W-174 by gamma-spectroscopy, focusing on the conservation of selection rules of the K quantum number with the excitation energy. The W-174 nucleus was populated at high spins by the fusion-evaporation reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 backed target. The experiment was performed in Legnaro National Laboratory using the AGATA Demonstrator HPGe-array (AD) coupled with an array of 27 BaF2 scintillator detectors. High-energy gamma-rays measured in the AD and in the scintillators array will be also analyzed to study the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) in the compound nucleus W-178. The discrimination between n and gamma in the AD detectors will be employed, following a procedure recently developed by Monte Carlo simulations and using digital Pulse Shape Analysis timing techniques., Ist Nazl Fisica Nucleare, INFN CNAF

Abstract

The isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) γ decay was measured in the compound nuclei 80Zr and 81Rb at an excitation energy of E∗=54 MeV. The fusion reaction 40Ca+40Ca at Ebeam=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 80Zr, while the reaction 37Cl+44Ca at Ebeam=95 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 81Rb at the same excitation energy. The IVGDR parameters extracted from the analysis were compared with the ones found at higher excitation energy (E∗=83 MeV). The comparison allows one to observe two different nuclear mechanisms: (i) the IVGDR intrinsic width remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 81Rb; (ii) the isospin-violating spreading width (i.e., Coulomb spreading width) remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 80Zr. Abstract

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $\alpha$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Neutron-rich isotopes around lead, beyond N = 126, have been studied exploiting the fragmentation of an uranium primary beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. For the first time beta-decay half-lives of Bi-219 and Tl-211,Tl-212,Tl-213 isotopes have been derived. The half-lives have been extracted using a numerical simulation developed for experiments in high-background conditions. Comparison with state of the art models used in r-process calculations is given, showing a systematic underestimation of the experimental values, at variance from close-lying nuclei. Abstract

The γ decay from the high-lying states of ^140Ce excited via inelastic scattering of ^17O at a bombarding energy of 340 MeV was measured using the high-resolution AGATA-demonstrator array in coincidence with scattered ions detected in two segmented Δ E-E silicon detectors. Angular distributions of scattered ions and emitted γ rays were measured, as well as their differential cross sections. The excitation of 1^− states below the neutron separation energy is similar to the one obtained in reactions with the α isoscalar probe. The comparison between the experimental differential cross sections and the corresponding predictions using the distorted-wave Born approximation allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of identified 1^− pygmy states. For this analysis the form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities and optical potentials was used.

Abstract

International audience; The isospin mixing was deduced in the compound nucleus Zr-80 at an excitation energy of E* = 54 MeV from the gamma decay of the giant dipole resonance. The reaction Ca-40 + Ca-40 at E-beam = 136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus in the isospin I = 0 channel, while the reaction Cl-37 + Ca-44 at E-beam = 95 MeV was used as the reference reaction. The. rays were detected with the AGATA demonstrator array coupled with LaBr3:Ce detectors. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing was obtained and the zero-temperature value deduced. The isospin-symmetry-breaking correction delta(C) used for the Fermi superallowed transitions was extracted and found to be consistent with beta-decay data.

Abstract

Monte Carlo (MC) codes are increasingly spreading in the hadrontherapy community due to their detailed description of radiation transport and interaction with matter. The suitability of a MC code for application to hadrontherapy demands accurate and reliable physical models for the description of the transport and the interaction of all components of the expected radiation field (ions, hadrons, electrons, positrons and photons). This contribution will address the specific case of the general-purpose particle and interaction code FLUKA. In this work, an application of FLUKA will be presented, i.e. establishing CT (computed tomography)-based calculations of physical and RBE (relative biological effectiveness)-weighted dose distributions in scanned carbon ion beam therapy.

Abstract

International audience; 2(+) and 1(-) states in Zr-90 were populated via the (O-17, O-17 'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV. The gamma decay was measured with high resolution using the AGATA (advanced gamma tracking array demonstrator array). Differential cross sections were obtained at few different angles for the scattered particle. The results of the elastic scattering and inelastic excitation of 2(+), 3(,)(-) and 1(-) states are compared with distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, using both the standard collective form factor and a form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities. This allowed to extract the isoscalar component of the 1(-) state at 6.424 MeV. The comparison of the present (17O, 17O 'gamma) data with existing (gamma,gamma') and (p, p') data in the corresponding region of the gamma continuum (6-11 MeV), characterized by a large E1 component, shows completely different behaviors of the cross section as a function of the nuclear excitation energy. The comparison of the data with DWBA calculations suggests a decrease of the isoscalar strength in the cross section with increasing excitation energy.

Abstract

International audience; High-energy giant dipole resonance (GDR) γ rays were measured following the decay of the hot, rotatingcompound nucleus of 88Mo, produced at excitation energies of 124 and 261 MeV. The reaction 48Ti+ 40Ca at 300and 600 MeV bombarding energies has been used. The data were analyzed using the statistical modelMonte Carlocode GEMINI++. It allowed extracting the giant dipole resonance parameters by fitting the high-energy γ -rayspectra. The extracted GDR widths were compared with the available data at lower excitation energy and withtheoretical predictions based on (i) The Lublin-Strasbourg drop macroscopic model, supplemented with thermalshape fluctuations analysis, and (ii) The phonon damping model. The theoretical predictions were convolutedwiththe population matrices of evaporated nuclei from the statistical model GEMINI++. Also a comparison with theresults of a phenomenological expression based on the existing systematics, mainly for lower temperature data,is presented and discussed. A possible onset of a saturation of the GDR width was observed around T = 3 MeV.

Abstract

International audience; The gamma decay from the high-lying states of Sn-124 was measured using the inelastic scattering of O-17 at 340 MeV. The emitted gamma rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented Delta E-E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the gamma rays and the scattered O-17 ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (gamma,gamma') and (alpha,alpha'gamma) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1-excited states was extracted. The obtained values are based on the comparison of the data with DWBA calculations including a form factor deduced using a microscopic transition density. (C) 2014 The Authors. Cross sections and angular distributions of the emitted γ rays and of the scattered particles were measured. The results are compared with (γ, γ′) and (p, p′) data. The data analysis with the distorted wave Born approximation approach gives a good description of the elastic scattering and of the inelastic excitation of the 2+ and 3- states. For the dipole transitions a form factor obtained by folding a microscopically calculated transition density was used for the first time. Abstract

The properties of pygmy dipole states in Pb208 were investigated using the Pb208(O17, O17'γ) reaction at 340 MeV and measuring the γ decay with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array. Cross sections and angular distributions of the emitted γ rays and of the scattered particles were measured. The results are compared with (γ, γ′) and (p, p′) data. The data analysis with the distorted wave Born approximation approach gives a good description of the elastic scattering and of the inelastic excitation of the 2+ and 3− states. For the dipole transitions a form factor obtained by folding a microscopically calculated transition density was used for the first time. This has allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of the 1− excited states from 4 to 8 MeV.

Abstract

The structure of the neutron-rich bismuth isotope 217Bi has been studied for the first time. The fragmentation of a primary 238U beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI was exploited to perform γ-decay spectroscopy, since μs isomeric states were expected in this nucleus. Gamma rays following the decay of a t1/2=3 μs isomer were observed, allowing one to establish the low-lying structure of 217Bi. The level energies and the reduced electric quadrupole transition probability B(E2) from the isomeric state are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

Neutron-rich nuclei in the lead region, beyond N=126, have been studied at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam. Two isomeric states have been identified in Hg: the 8 isomer expected from the seniority scheme in the νg shell and a second one at low spin and low excitation energy. The decay strength of the 8 isomer confirms the need of effective three-body forces in the case of neutron-rich lead isotopes. The other unexpected low-lying isomer has been tentatively assigned as a 3 state, although this is in contrast with theoretical expectations. © 2013 Elsevier B.V..

Abstract

The 48Ti on 40Ca reactions have been studied at 300 and 600 MeV using the Tandem-ALPI accelerator complex at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The reactions have been analyzed focusing on the fusion-evaporation (FE) and fusion-fission (FF) exit channels, which dominates in symmetric entrance channel collision at moderate bombarding energies. In particular, the energy spectra, angular distributions, and multiplicities of the emitted light charged particles in the two reaction channels FE and FF will be discussed. An estimation of the absolute cross sections for both channels will be also given. The experimental results will be then compared to Monte Carlo simulations based on the statistical model. The comparison between the results obtained from the same system populated at two excitation energies is important to evidence the possible growing of non-equilibrium effects. At the lower energy complete fusion is expected to exhaust almost the whole central collision cross section, with a consequent negligible non-equilibrium emission. This reaction may therefore be used to keep under control the statistical code parameters. Results on the comparison between the two reactions energies will be discussed. Indeed, very few data exist in literature which are coming from coincidence measurements between evaporation residues and light charged particles for compound nuclei with mass A < 150. That is why statistical model parameters are not completely tested in this mass region. The present work, which deals with the de-excitation of 88Mo, is therefore very interesting because experimental results will help in refining the statistical description of the decay of hot and rotating nuclei with moderate size.

Abstract

The K hindrance to the gamma decay is studied in the warm rotating W-174 nucleus, focusing on the weakening of the selection rules of the K quantum number with increasing excitation energy. W-174 was populated by the fusion reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 target, and its gamma decay was detected by the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to a BaF2 multiplicity filter at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. A fluctuation analysis of gamma coincidence matrices gives a similar number of low-K and high-K discrete excited bands. The results are compared to simulations of the gamma-decay flow based on a microscopic cranked shell model at finite temperature in which the K mixing is governed by the interplay of Coriolis force with the residual interaction. Agreement between simulations and experiment is obtained only by hindering the E1 decay between low-K and high-K bands by an amount compatible with that determined by spectroscopic studies of K isomers in the same mass region, with a similar trend with excitation energy. Abstract

The population of Zr following the β decay of Y produced in the projectile fission of U at the GSI facility in Darmstadt, Germany has been studied. Y is known to decay into Zr via two states, one of high spin and the other low spin. These states preferentially populate different levels in the Zr daughter. In this paper the intensities of transitions in Zr observed are compared with those from the decay of the low-spin level studied at the TRISTAN facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory and of the high-spin level studied at the JOSEF separator at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

International audience; The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic structure of low-lying states in Ca-42 with a focus on a possible superdeformation in this nucleus was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. Abstract

The γ decays of neutron-rich Ca isotopes around 48Ca were measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using the heavy-ion transfer reactions 48Ca on 64Ni and 48Ca on 208Pb at ≈6 MeV/A. The work shows the feasibility to perform full in-beam γ spectroscopy with heavy-ion transfer reactions (in terms of angular distributions, polarizations, and lifetimes analysis), providing a method that can be further exploited in the future with heavy targets and radioactive beams. For the one-neutron transfer channels, 49Ca and 47Ca, shell-model and particle-vibration coupling calculations are used to understand the nature of the states. In particular, in both nuclei evidence is found for particle-vibration coupled states based on the 3− phonon of 48Ca. In the two-neutron transfer channels, 46Ca and 50Ca, the experimental data are in global agreement with predictions based on full fp shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The study of the collective properties of a nuclear system is a powerful tool to understand the structure which lies inside the nucleus. A successful technique which has been used in this field is the measurement of the gamma-decay of the highly collective Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR). In fact, GDR can be used as a probe for the internal structure of hot nuclei and, in addition, constitutes a clock for the thermalization process. Using the fusion evaporation reaction, it has been recently possible to study (i) the yield of the high-energy gamma-ray emission of the Dynamical Dipole which takes place during the fusion process and (ii) the degree of isospin mixing at high temperature in the decay of (80)Zr. In the first case it is important to stress the fact that the predictions of the theoretical models might differ depending on the type of nuclear equation of state (EOS) and on the N-N in-medium cross-section used in the calculations while, in the second physics case, the data are relative to the heaviest N = Z nucleus which has been possible to populate in the I = 0 channel using fusion evaporation reaction. Both experiments were performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the HECTOR-GARFIELD array. The high-energy gamma-rays were measured in coincidence with light charged particles and fusion evaporation residues.

Abstract

Elastic, inelastic and one-nucleon transfer channels in the 48Ca+64Ni reaction have been mea- sured at ~ 6 MeV/A with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, at Legnaro National Laboratory, consisting in the coupling of a large solid angle magnetic spectrometer with a germanium array. By trajec- tory reconstruction the reaction products have been fully identi ed in mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy, while coincident spectra of binary partners have been constructed after Doppler correction. Absolute di erential cross sections have been extracted for the inelastic excitation and one-nucleon transfer, also for speci c excited states. The data are in good agreement with semi-classical calculations and Distorted Wave Born approximation predictions. The work outlines an experimental method which can become valuable to extract structural information from heavy-ion reaction studies.

Abstract

International audience; The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in 42Ca with a focus on a presumably superdeformed band was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy using the \gamma -ray spectrometer AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the DANTE charged particle detector array. First results are presented, including the refinement of the 42Ca level scheme.
