The aim of the present work was to study the effect of the crude extract of Curcuma zedoaria on peripheral blood cells and tumor progression in C57Bl/6J mice injected with B16F10 murine melanoma cells. The intraperitoneal therapy showed a significant increase in total white and red blood cell counts, a decrease in peritoneal cell number and tumor volume reduction, whereas the oral administration revealed a noteworthy augmentation only in total leukocyte count. These results contribute to evaluate the importance of alternative treatments that employ phytotherapic compounds against tumor progression and its possible immunomodulation.

In Antartide sono presenti estreme condizioni ambientali e, fra i viventi, alcuni batteri, recentemente descritti da studiosi italiani, aventi la caratteristica di produrre molecole antibiotico-simili utili a curare soggetti affetti da fibrosi cistica. Studi condotti da esperti argentini e di altri paesi hanno portato alla scoperta di comunità batteriche con grosso potenziale biotecnologico sfruttabile nell’industria alimentare, tessile, dei biocarburanti ed anche utili come degradatori di idrocarburi da usare in protocolli di ripristino di suoli contaminati; anche lieviti e virus antartici sono di interesse biotecnologico. In conclusione l’Antartide è una miniera ecosostenibile di risorse a potenziale biotecnologico. Esistono competenze appropriate in Italia, in Argentina ed in altri paesi dell’America latina per poter studiare e applicare queste biorisorse. Tramite un coordinamento ed opportuni finanziamenti, dunque, si potrà fornire un ritorno, non solo scientifico ma anche economico, a quei paesi che intenderanno supportare queste ricerche.

Background: Diffusion tensor imaging allows the study of integrity of white matter (WM) tracts. Literature suggests that WM integrity could be altered in bipolar disorder. Heterogeneity of brain imaging methods, the studied samples, and drug treatments make localization, nature, and severity of the WM abnormalities unclear. Methods: We applied tract-based spatial statistics of diffusion tensor imaging measures to compare fractional anisotropy (FA), mean, and radial diffusivity of the WM skeleton in a group of 40 consecutively admitted inpatients affected by a major depressive episode without psychotic features with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder type I and 21 unrelated healthy volunteers from the general population. Results: Compared with control subjects, patients showed lower FA in the genu of the corpus callosum and in anterior and right superior-posterior corona radiata and higher values of radial diffusivity in WM tracts of splenium, genu and body of corpus callosum, right mid-dorsal part of the cingulum bundle, left anterior and bilateral superior and posterior corona radiata, bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus, and right posterior thalamic radiation. Patients had no brain areas with higher FA or lower diffusivity values than control subjects. Conclusions: Reduced FA with increased mean and radial diffusivity suggests significant demyelination and/or dysmyelination without axonal loss. Comparing our findings with other observations in homogeneous samples of euthymic and manic patients, it can be hypothesized that changes in measures of WM integrity might parallel illness phases of bipolar illness.
